They acquired McCarthy to help them try to navigate a season without Dart...if McCarthy plays well enough that someone out there thinks he can be a starter the Giants can flip him and get the fifth-round pick they used to get him — or better — back in a deal.

McCarthy is a season-long backup; Dart remains the Giants' long-term QB.
The Giants acquired McCarthy on a rookie contract to navigate the season without Jaxson Dart, not to compete with him. The source has serious doubts McCarthy can change the fact that Dart is the long-term starter. McCarthy was obtained as a stopgap measure, and if he plays well enough to convince another team he can be a starter, the Giants could flip him for the fifth-round pick they used to acquire him or better.
