Romeo Dobs could probably be that next guy... was the original player that made me think of the idea about sacrificial X... he eventually grew and developed and became more of just a a solid in my opinion starting ex receiver... the current Patriots, number one, he's on IR... they want AJ Brown to be their ex.

Doubs on IR with Patriots; team prefers AJ Brown at X receiver
Matt Harmon identifies Romeo Doubs as the original player that inspired the sacrificial X receiver concept; Doubs started his career in that role with the Packers but eventually developed into a solid starting X receiver. However, Doubs is currently on IR with the Patriots, and the team prefers AJ Brown at the X position, limiting his fantasy relevance.
