Signed by the Lions as veteran backup after Teddy Bridgewater's retirement; competing with undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer for the backup QB role. Drew Petzing notes Dobbs has familiarity with the Lions' offensive coordinator from their time in Arizona, where Dobbs started eight games (1-7 record) and threw for eight touchdowns, five interceptions, and 1,569 yards while scrambling for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Among available free agent QBs, only Jimmy Garoppolo, Russell Wilson, and Trevor Siemian have more starts than Dobbs. Petzing characterizes him as 'about as good of a backup as you can sign in the middle of August—experienced, athletic, smart, and, best of all, inexpensive,' with intangibles ('the Passtronaut') that make him a solid depth option without requiring trade assets.
