Dobbs enters the Lions as backup quarterback and checks a lot of boxes: he has familiarity with Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing from their time in Arizona (eight starts together), is experienced with NFL experience, athletic, smart, and inexpensive. In his eight Arizona starts, he threw for eight touchdowns, five interceptions, and 1,569 yards while scrambling for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Among free agent quarterbacks available on the market, only Jimmy Garoppolo, Russell Wilson, and Trevor Siemian have more starts than Dobbs. Drew Petzing believes Dobbs is about as good of a backup as you can sign in mid-August and that the Lions have all they need in their quarterback room with him in the fold.
