McCarthy's first year starting was poor; among quarterbacks with 300 dropbacks, he finished 33rd out of 34 in EPA per play, with only Titans rookie Cam Ward worse. His mechanics needed work, contributing to too many inaccurate throws, and he rarely seemed comfortable despite some positive outings in wins over the Lions, Commanders and Cowboys.
