Backup quarterback Simpson shined in preseason action against the Chiefs, going 21-for-25 passing with 190 yards and two touchdowns in three quarters of play. He received 12 of the 25 second-team offense reps in the Rams' joint practice with the Saints. Head coach Sean McVay praised his performance, saying "I thought his huddle command was excellent, his ability to articulate the plays and the way that our operation was and then he made the decisions that good quarterbacks make. I thought he delivered the ball on time and in rhythm." McVay noted Simpson "has done a good job the last couple days in practice" and emphasized maximizing the reps he receives.
