Max Klare notes that rookie Ty Simpson has not been convincingly better than Stetson Bennett through two preseason appearances. Simpson's second game was a continuation of his first, with the same questions persisting—primarily surrounding competence in the deep area of the field—heading into the preseason finale. Klare assesses that Simpson may eventually surpass the Jimmy Garoppolo bar, but he is not there currently. Simpson is probably the safer backup bet at this point, though neither he nor Bennett represents a reliable option if Matthew Stafford misses extended time.
