Rookie Ty Simpson has not been convincingly better than Bennett in preseason competition. His second appearance continued the pattern from the preseason opener, with persistent questions surrounding competence in the deep area of the field remaining unresolved as the preseason finale approaches. While Simpson is probably the safer bet at backup QB compared to Bennett, he has not demonstrated the reliability needed to keep the Rams afloat if Matthew Stafford misses extended time.
