Lance, the incumbent backup quarterback, underperformed in the preseason finale against the Rams. Despite using his legs well for 22 yards on four rushes, he looked rushed on most of his snaps and failed to connect on either of his two throws, one of which was dropped by Derius Davis. His familiarity with Mike McDaniel's system from their shared time in San Francisco did not translate to a strong performance, and he lost the backup competition to DJ Uiagalelei.
