Kirk Cousins was named the starting quarterback for Week 1 by head coach Klint Kubiak, with No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza starting the year as the backup. Cousins will be a matchup play, particularly against Miami and New Orleans for the foreseeable future; the Raiders have two very winnable games in the first four weeks against the Dolphins and Saints, face the Patriots and Bills in Weeks 5 and 6, and don't have a bye until Week 13.
