Signed on cutdown deadline day; prior connection with head coach Matt LaFleur (coached Smith when LaFleur was offensive coordinator with Tennessee Titans). Smith is off-ball tight end who occasionally carries the ball; here to play hybrid tight end-fullback role getting ball in his hands, not traditional all-around tight end. Will contribute in obvious passing situations as yards-after-catch threat. When Luke Musgrave returns from PUP list (neck injury), Smith should push Josh Whyle out of role; team may eventually release Whyle to practice squad. Did not play in preseason.
