1:00It's really easy. And super flex leagues. I remember about, oh, I don't know, 10 years ago.
1:05Plus when the black book, actually 15 years ago when the black book first started, I was like pushing super flex to be the thing.
1:13Well, I'm old. That's how things go. And, you know, at the time it was still very niche.
1:18It's not niche anymore. It's what you see in most dynasty startups nowadays.
1:22It's what you're seeing a lot of leagues realize.
1:25And, and my whole thing over the years was always, why are we leaving quarterbacks?
1:29The most important position in football out there sitting on the waiver wire and 12 team leagues is only 12 of them active.
1:36That's craziness. So digging deeper in a quarterback, if you haven't done it or you to fantasy, please, I beg you do it.
1:43Especially if you're in 10 team leagues, go to QB for God's sakes, forget the super flex, just go right for it.
1:49So Tara, I want to start with you today.
1:52Cause I want to talk about some strategies because annually the pool changes at quarterback last couple of years.
1:58I've been making that, um, that case for the fact that it was so much youth and inexperience of the position that
2:04it was going to hurt offenses a little bit.
2:07And it was going to be very difficult to super flex.
2:10And we might see a renaissance to the running back position, which I believe we kind of did last year.
2:16This year, I feel a little bit better about the pool.
2:20So talk to me about what your 2026 strategy might look like.
2:23And some of the things that people can learn and apply this year to those formats.
2:28Yeah, I feel better about the pool this season as well.
2:31And, uh, but we did have our struggles last year with a couple of high end options that went down with injuries.
2:38It always happens, but obviously in super flex that can derail your season fast because you're then trying to pivot to a
2:44backup or seeing what third option you have that you can drag out and hope that you get some upside there.
2:51Then you have, you know, your regression candidates, your wayward quarterbacks that come down after an outlier performance here.
2:56So we had a little bit of that last year, but this year, when I'm looking at the draft, you know, my
3:03number one strategy here is to bank on a lot of these bounce backs from injured or wayward quarterbacks.
3:09Like there's a few guys in particular that I want to point out because I feel like they fall into this category, but they're being significantly undervalued.
3:17Unlike a Lamar Jackson, we get it. We know we're drafting.
3:20We're not worried about that whatsoever. If injury comes, we take it.
3:23But you look at a guy like Patrick Mahomes coming off of a major injury.
3:28That's someone that I want to point out because he has been significantly undervalued coming off of this injury.
3:34And then you couple it together with the Rasheed Rice issue.
3:37I feel like we might be overreacting to that because Patrick Mahomes literally made it work and got it done with him
3:43being suspended for a good chunk of last season.
3:46Xavier Worthy missing games, clearly not 100% when he returned from the injury.
3:50Patrick Mahomes had us rolling out Hollywood Brown and Taequann Thornton as if they were good fantasy assets that we could actually rely on there.
3:57So when I'm looking at that, we need to like just kind of back it up and not overreact to the possibility
4:04that yeah, there are some potential injuries here for the wide receivers and maybe some potential jail time there that is already happening and could linger further.
4:12But Patrick Mahomes is Patrick Mahomes and we are getting insane discount on him at QB 13.
4:17Are you kidding me? Yeah, you can make the argument for maybe mobility being a little bit limited coming off of that
4:24injury, but we don't really apply that issue to other positions like say a Malik neighbors not getting massively discounted a little bit, but not massively discounted.
4:32You're not worried about his ability to run when he actually gets on the field.
4:36Patrick Mahomes loves to call his own number in the red zone, whether that's via the pass or the run.
4:42There's a thousand avenues that he can get his fantasy value.
4:45So buy into the discount here. Don't panic. There's other wayward quarterbacks as well, like Baker Mayfield.
4:51Daniel Jones is another one that I like coming off of the injury there.
4:55We got to see how these guys get on the field, but he literally had people calling for MVP consideration here.
5:01And he's excellent late round value that you can draft over having to worry about some of the other options like a CJ Stroud and whatnot.
5:09So don't panic over these injuries. These guys coming off injuries by the dip, get the value and literally get the upside for super flex there.
5:16Yeah. Mahomes is the 13 QB off the board and you bring up Daniel Jones.
5:21Baker Mayfield is one that comes to mind for me when I do the quarterback write-ups to us just talk about kind
5:28of like the meaty middle as you were a quarterback where you get the, the, you know, the less thrilling guys.
5:34It's not necessarily the little Mars and the Drake maze and Josh Allen's of the world, but you know, you look past
5:40that and you see Bo Nix there, right? It wasn't always pretty, but it was fantasy points.
5:45You see guys like Kyler Murray, another guy too, coming off injury and a new situation there.
5:51All of a sudden there's a lot more talent in that post 13 QB range of a lot of guys.
5:56You can make an argument or seeing finishing as a top 10 quarterback in fantasy.
6:01And that's what makes super flex so much easier this year.
6:04If you have a later pick in the first round, cause then you can go ahead and you could take the Jameer Gibbs.
6:11You can take the B. John Robbins. You can take those kinds of guys and then take a quarterback or two, you
6:18know, second, third round still have plenty to go.
6:20So D bro, talk to me about some super flex strategy that you're in on this year, man.
6:26I think it all comes down to targeting kind of like partially what Tara's alluding to here, but also waiting on quarterback,
6:32but targeting these rushing upside quarterbacks with later picks.
6:35Like guys going outside the top 12 to 15 quarterbacks right now.
6:39And I'm going to give you about four quarterbacks here to chew on Kyler Murray at QB 17, Tyler Shuck at QB 19, Malik Willis at QB 21.
6:47And I'll even throw in Shadir Sanders here at the end of QB 34.
6:51If he wins that job, Kyler Murray, we know that the case is easy to make.
6:56I mean, last year when we saw him on the field, he was fourth in rushing yards per game.
7:01You're not having to pay a premium. I think that this really isn't a competition for the Viking starting job.
7:07I think it's going to be Kyler Murray. I don't think JJ is going to be even given a chance to sniff at the starting job.
7:15So enjoy the fact that you can draft Kyler Murray this low and that rushing yard yardage mark per game last year
7:22was the highest rushing yards per game. Kyler Murray had put up since 2022.
7:26So this year coming into the KOC offense, probably going to see him run a little bit more as well.
7:32Getting to Tyler Shuck, man, like I think people are sleeping on.
7:36Yes, we're all kind of collectively talking and buzzing about the Saints offense, but I think people are sleeping on the rushing upside.
7:42With Shuck, he's not immobile. He's more athletic than people think.
7:46In weeks 12 through 18 last year, he averaged 25 rushing yards per game, which might not sound like a lot in the totality.
7:53Overall, that would have put him 12th best amongst quarterbacks.
7:56In four of those seven games that I'm talking about, he had at least six rushing attempts.
8:01So the volume is there and we could see him run more this upcoming season.
8:05Malik Willis, again, the case is easy, man. Like we've seen him start six games in his career.
8:11He's averaged 44.8 rushing yards per game in those games.
8:14Three years, the last three years amongst quarterbacks, that mark would have ranked first, fourth, and third.
8:19And you're getting him at low end QB two price tag.
8:22Sign me up for that all day. I don't care who his receivers are because he's going to run enough that it's not going to freaking matter.
8:30And the last guy here, Shadir Sanders. I don't know if he wins the Cleveland starting job.
8:35I surely hope he does. And if he does, there is quiet rushing upside to be had with Shudder Sanders.
8:41In his final five starts, he averaged 29.6 rushing yards per game.
8:45That would have put him on pace for over 500 rushing yards for the season.
8:49So with all of these quarterbacks, again, you can find that Konami code quarterback without having to pay top 12 capital that
8:56could finish with inside the top 12 to 15 quarterbacks.
8:59And you can draft two to three of these guys easily after you're talking about Joey stacking your starting lineup with running
9:05back, running back start or two elites, whether it's running back and wide receiver or going paying for the premium tight end
9:12early and still getting upside of the quarterback position.
9:15It's too easy this year in Superflex. I know I touched on that, that middle group, but Tara, I know that's something
9:21that you wanted to reiterate as well. And your second point here on the show today, because it's not very often that
9:28you have the reigning NFL MVP drafted as QB 15 off the board.
9:32You know, like it is a very weird place that we're in right now.
9:36So talk to me about your take when you're looking at this group here.
9:40That's again, middle of the pack of Superflex and maybe even some guys that you might even think they could leap into that and outperform their ADP.
9:48Yeah. Building on what you said, the first point, and then what Debro said as well, he literally hit on two quarterbacks
9:55that I'm in love with and Tyler Shuck. I'm buying it.
9:58We're getting to bounce back here. And a Malik Willis as well, because one of the big things in terms of what a great strategy.
10:05My second point here is take advantage of the quarterback depth that we have here instead of overdrafting high risk QB ones.
10:12Like I'm OK with a little bit of risk here.
10:15But at the end of the day, when we're looking at the depth, like and I hate to pick on specific quarterbacks
10:21because I am just FYI, I am pro Jalen Hurts.
10:24I am. But the ADP is just an unnecessary risk.
10:27There's so many factors going on here with him.
10:30And while I think he's a pretty safe bet to, you know, finish in that 8 to 12 range, maybe 10 to
10:3712 is kind of kind of nailing a specific spot there in terms of, you know, the youth developing in that offense.
10:43Obviously switching over to a new coordinator, things changing.
10:46He's always got the rushing upside that kind of carries him in terms of having that safe floor there.
10:51But there's a lot happening here that means that while drafting him at his ADP and his ADP does make sense.
10:58It's just an unnecessary risk when you can get that same level of production out of guys that you can draft a lot further back.
11:05You mentioned Matt Stafford being one of those guys that you could take later coming off of an MVP season.
11:11Pukunikua, Devontae Adams returning as well. Obviously, it's Sean McVay's system.
11:14There are no changes. So we're set. They've got the upgrades on defense as well.
11:19So we're set here for a repeat. You can look at a guy drafted right around him as well, like Jared Goff,
11:25always underrated as well, coming in with a very easy schedule this season.
11:29I mean, this is actually one that I really want to highlight here because with Jared Goff, I feel like we know what the deal is, right?
11:37And oddly enough, the NFC North has the inter-conference schedule with the AFC East.
11:42And it's messed things up badly for strength of schedule for Chicago and Green Bay and Buffalo, right?
11:47But somehow, the Patriots in particular, right? But somehow Detroit lucked out in all of this.
11:52And they have literally just a beautiful schedule, particularly in the back half of the season where they play in a dome.
11:58For the vast majority, I think weeks 10 through 16, six out of their seven games are in a dome.
12:04And the one game that is outdoor is in Tennessee.
12:07So you can look at those things when you're looking at kind of trying to pinpoint those QB2s that are good depth
12:14and can put up that same clear top 10 upside.
12:17And if things go the right way with these volume quarterbacks, you can also dip into that top five upside with them as well.
12:24Getting the change in offensive coordinator is going to be good for them.
12:28They're changing to Drew Petsing, who did push significant volume with Jacoby Brissett last season.
12:32Obviously knows how to use the wide receivers and tight ends very well.
12:36So it's a good setup for him. When we're looking at, again, I talked about Jalen Hurts.
12:41There's even like, I hate to like bag on Jackson Dart, but it's not him.
12:46It's not the talent. It's Matt Nagy. I can't stand him.
12:49Why are we drafting him in an elevated ADP?
12:52This is a safe space for that kind of feeling.
12:55Thank you. Yeah. I mean, I could spend a full hour ragging on the traumas of Matt Nagy.
13:00Well, this is only a mid-form podcast today, so we'll have to book that another time next week.
13:05But I'm here for it. I know Derek is, too.
13:08I'm pretty sure. Yes, exactly. All right. Debro, when you're talking about some of these other guys, too, with the rushing upside,
13:15too, it's not just the guys in the middle.
13:18Sometimes it's guys late. It's also targeting backups sometimes in those super flex leagues where you get that third quarterback.
13:24I know for me, I'm trying to get Mendoza as my third quarterback this year.
13:28Now, I'm saying that out loud, knowing that you and I will be in a flex championship league yet again together this year.
13:35But I'm just telling you ahead of time. Yeah.
13:38That's my strategy because I fear no one. I'm going for my fourth championship in that league.
13:43So I don't even fear you, Mr. Almost Perfect Season a couple years ago.
13:47Almost Perfect Season. Almost Perfect. Yeah, just couldn't get out of that first round of the playoffs, could you there, buddy?
13:53Just couldn't... Tough scene. Tough scene. Anyway, let's talk about some of these, like the back end of QB2 and how you
14:00would approach that, too, whether it's that late second guy or maybe even that third guy with some upside on the bench.
14:06Because, you know, every year, especially the last couple years, QBs have missed some time.
14:11Yeah. And it's funny you bring up the flex league stuff because, I mean, this strategy that I'm about to unfold here
14:17is something that kept me alive as I was mixing and matching QB2 for pretty much the entire season.
14:23And I'm going to tell people out there. Stash one to two QB2s on NFL depth charts with your final picks and
14:30target guys in good offenses or with rushing upside.
14:32Like last year, I kept rotating through the Mac Jones of the world, Marcus Mariota.
14:37And spoiler, I'm bringing both those guys up again.
14:39Because if Brock Purdy, and that's a guy that could have fit any one of these conversations that we've already had about
14:46quarterbacks and being undervalued and taking the dip. Brock Purdy not going as a top 12 quarterback right now.
14:52Although over the last three seasons, it's been QB5, QB10, QB6 in fantasy points per game.
14:56You can also target Mac Jones. He had four games last year where he had over 19 fantasy points.
15:02And just to illuminate, people are going to say, man, you're burning a roster spot on a player that's probably never going to see the field.
15:10To your point, Joey, I went back over the last five years.
15:13Over the last five years, on average, 43 quarterbacks per season have started at least four games.
15:18So you're getting at least a runway of almost 25% of the season.
15:22So we're talking about mixing and matching quarterbacks and having that depth in super flex.
15:27If they get longer than that, like then kudos.
15:29It's awesome. And any in all of those five years, no fewer than 40 quarterbacks have started at least four games.
15:36So essentially, you're getting outside the top 32 quarterbacks, what, 11 quarterbacks that are usable in super flex that are giving you almost 25% of the season.
15:44A couple of years ago, that number was in the 60s, I remember a couple of years ago.
15:49Because we talked about it and it was just an insane number.
15:53And I would say this too, that the game within the game here, a fantasy, which is when you do have the
15:59Mac Jones on your bench, let's say a guy that you know is in a system where he's going to be successful.
16:06You've seen it happen, A, but also the system just yields ease for quarterbacks, right?
16:10It's saving you fab too, because when that inevitable injury happens, sometimes that guy then becomes somebody that you have to spend
16:1740 to 50% of your fab on to get, if not more, if you're going to be serious about getting them.
16:23And all the wolves are out. Like everybody's fighting for the same, you know, backup quarterback that now is thrust into a role for the next month.
16:31I mean, you know, you could see what happened just last year with all the quarterback injuries and how, you know, everyone was cycling through.
16:39And when you have two in a week or three in a week, you know, Lamar goes out and then Daniel Jones
16:45goes out and this guy goes out. It's massive out there.
16:49And all of a sudden, everyone's just like fighting and clawing over the scraps of the QB position.
16:54But at least in the first six weeks to have that too is intriguing, at least from my point of view, especially
17:00if you, to Derek's point, target them specifically. Great stuff, everybody.
