Maye looks uncomfortable under pressure and lacks confidence compared to last season. Against the Seahawks and Steelers defenses, he has struggled, particularly in zone coverage situations. However, he performs better when blitzed, showing accuracy and quick release. The Patriots offense is scared due to pass protection issues, which has permeated the entire offensive room and play-calling.NegativeMatchupSep 16, 2026
Drake Maye has shown a tendency to force the ball into split safety coverage against Seattle multiple times; Patrick Graham's Steelers defense may exploit this weakness in Week 2, using a split safety look similar to what Seattle showed.NegativeRoleSep 16, 2026
Drake Maye was trying to do too much in Week 1 against Seattle, forcing difficult throws rather than taking easy completions; Mina Kimes expects he'll make adjustments and the Patriots will be more conservative, which means fewer turnovers but also a lower-scoring offense against Pittsburgh.NegativeRoleSep 16, 2026
Mina Kimes observed that Drake Maye was trying to do too much in the Patriots' Week 1 game against Seattle, extending beyond his role; this over-extension manifested not just in the late-game interception but throughout the game, suggesting a pattern of overreaching rather than a single play mistake.NegativeUsageSep 9, 2026
Mina Kimes highlights that the Patriots' offensive success hinges on whether they can protect Drake Maye long enough to exploit the Seahawks' injury-depleted secondary. Kimes notes that the Super Bowl served as a referendum on the Patriots' offensive line and Maye's protection, emphasizing that the coaching staff must adjust their protections and personnel to avoid the 'onslaught' Maye faced previously.NegativeProjectionSep 3, 2026
Mina Kimes notes that there is negative sentiment surrounding the Patriots, partly due to what was seen from Drake Maye in the postseason.NegativeProjectionJul 27, 2026
Drake Maye was the second-highest scrambler in modern NFL history (top 25), and the Patriots tried to prevent him from scrambling because he kept taking head hits; last year he was nervous about scrambling due to coaching emphasis on "just go down, don't take hits," which may have led to carelessness with the football.PositiveInjuryJul 27, 2026
Mina Kimes argues that Drake Maye was not fully healthy in the final weeks of last season, which is "glossed over" in evaluations. She suggests his health status may have impacted late-season performance and that full health in year two could improve his trajectory.PositiveProjectionJul 8, 2026
Drake Maye was first in passer rating when under pressure and fourth in EPA per drop back when blitzed despite being pressured at the sixth highest rate in the NFL.PositiveProjectionJul 8, 2026
Drake Maye has one of the most ridiculous EPA per drop backs on deep ball throws in the past five to seven years.PositiveProjectionJul 8, 2026
Drake Maye was in the MVP conversation the previous year with a lesser receiving group, and the upgraded receivers should help him further.PositiveProjectionJun 3, 2026
Maye is ranked either fourth or fifth at quarterback and will be throwing passes to A.J. Brown.NegativeMatchupJun 3, 2026
In the postseason, May struggled against press coverage, going 4 for 17, with instances of receivers not getting open, suggesting the receiving group got exposed in the playoffs.PositiveProjectionJun 3, 2026
May was the best quarterback on tight window throws last year in precision pass rate, QBR, and completion percentage over expected, demonstrating elite accuracy in tight spaces.PositiveProjectionJun 3, 2026
May was excellent at tight window throws last season and is really good at throwing guys open, making him an ideal fit for AJ Brown's skill set.PositiveProjectionJun 3, 2026
May is the truth as a quarterback and should be in the conversation for the first overall pick if starting a franchise, with potential for significant improvement in year three.
