Braelon Allen

PositiveSleeper3:58

Braelon Allen is identified as a talented backup running back whose 2024 season was wrecked by injury. Matt Harmon describes him as 'one of the more talented backup running backs in the league' and notes that he compliments Breece Hall well, positioning him as a player 'laying in the weeds' with upside if Hall's groin injury lingers or if Allen gets increased opportunity.

Breece Hall

NegativeInjury5:43

Breece Hall went down with a groin injury during the offseason/preseason. Matt Harmon expresses hope that it is not too serious, indicating uncertainty about the severity and potential fantasy impact for the Jets' lead running back.

Garrett Wilson

PositiveProjection0:20

Matt Harmon ranks Garrett Wilson as a top-10 caliber receiver in the NFL despite not yet putting together a top-10 season due to surrounding variables (poor QB and offensive coordinator). Wilson has put up three straight 1,000-yard seasons with some of the worst quarterbacks in football; last year he was injured and protected/benched down the stretch after week seven but still led the team in receiving with 369 yards. Harmon believes Wilson is one good OC and quarterback away from becoming one of the biggest stars in the league. The Jets identified him as a foundational piece worth keeping while trading away Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner. Wilson's 2024 player comps via RPO isolating statistics include Ja'Marr Chase, Antonio Brown, Stefon Diggs (Vikings era), and DeAndre Hopkins (Texans era); his 2025 comps include three Chris Olave entries in the top five. Harmon draws a direct parallel to Chris Olave's 2024 breakout: Olave had a top-10 caliber counting stats season after getting a really good offensive play caller (Kellen Moore) and a functional quarterback (Tyler Shuck). Harmon believes that same path is available for Garrett Wilson with the Jets' new offensive setup. Under new offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, Wilson is getting the most snaps from a percentage standpoint off the line of scrimmage in his career, playing in the slot much more frequently with a dynamic pre-snap role—a significant shift from his previous role under Nathaniel Hackett's old-school static offense where he was primarily an outside on-ball receiver. This role expansion creates more playmaking opportunities. Wilson is positioned as a movement guy and Z receiver in the Jets' 12 personnel package, with flexibility to kick into the slot and operate in two-by-one formations. Harmon highlights the fun offensive scheme possibilities with Wilson in this role. Long-term, Wilson and the Jets receiver group 'could all be so much better in 2027 if they find the right quarterback,' suggesting 2026 is a developmental year but long-term dynasty outlook improves materially with QB upgrade.

Geno Smith

NegativeProjection8:39

Matt Harmon believes Geno Smith has a chance to play much closer to his Seattle days than his Raiders days under Frank Reich; while not all-pro level, this represents a respectable professional level and a huge upgrade if the Jets achieve league-average offense. Harmon notes that Jets fans' primary concern is not Geno but rather Aaron Glenn and the coaching staff, and that Reich brings steadiness rather than revolutionary upside.

Omar Cooper Jr.

NegativeRole12:18

Omar Cooper, the Jets' first-round pick, is viewed as primarily a slot receiver in the NFL (he was a slot receiver at Indiana) and represents an interesting but problematic variable in the Jets' offensive scheme. Harmon notes that Cooper has been competing for the starting slot receiver job and may have even lost it to Isaiah Williams in camp, creating a scheme conflict: with Kenyan Seddik as a move tight end and Cooper as a pure slot receiver, it's unclear how to get both players on the field in two-receiver sets and 12 personnel packages, limiting his ability to maximize his talents. Cooper almost certainly is going to start the season slow due to learning curve from Indiana's offense. However, Harmon emphasizes Cooper's exceptional work ethic and coachability; Cooper specifically asked Harmon about his worst-graded routes and areas for improvement, demonstrating rare self-awareness. Harmon expects Cooper to improve significantly on curl routes and man coverage, suggesting mid-season emergence potential despite slow start.

0:00Thesis on the Jets. They are suddenly kind of loaded and maybe even like slightly overloaded with good young offensive players.
0:10>> Look at the release.
0:11>> There's your separation.
0:13>> Great route.
0:13>> Stutter and go. Gets by clean.
0:15>> That is unbelievable.
0:16>> May be the greatest catch I've ever seen.
0:20>> Specifically though, it revolves around one guy to me in Garrett Wilson [music] who I think is a you know again if we
0:28sit here and do the rankings maybe we disagree whatever but I think he's a top 10 caliber receiver in the NFL. Hasn't
0:35really put together that type of season yet but again isolating from surrounding variables I think we all know why he hasn't put together that season. So
0:42before we jump into just the overall Jets part of it I'm curious Dan like as a Jets fan who watches this game
0:49>> Sure.
0:49>> with much more you know emotional attachment to it like where do you think Garrett ranks league wide as a as a
0:55number one receiver?
0:56>> Yeah I'd be curious um on your kind of reception perception studies of him because I think if he were in a more functional
1:06um environment and his you know surrounding variables were far better I think he'd be talked about as a top 10 wide receiver in the league. I think
1:16he's that good. I think he is I think he is so special in terms of his athleticism his wiggle his hand-eye
1:25coordination um his toughness uh his uh just his I like his vibe. I like his energy and I
1:35think he is one good OC and quarterback away from becoming one of the you know biggest stars in the league and if they
1:43don't handle that and to Mark's point he's a former first round pick who they burned through his rookie deal with dysfunction. They were smart enough when
1:51they did their big sell off to say okay that's the guy to keep in the building Quinnen Williams it's time for him to go
1:57Sauce Gardner, hit the bricks. We're going to take draft picks from you guys, but Garrett Wilson's a foundational piece and I think that's instructive as
2:03well that that Moji um identified this guy as if we're ever going to get out of this, he's going to be the star of the
2:09offense. So, yes, I think he put up three straight 1,000-yard seasons with some of the worst quarterbacks in football. Last year, he got
2:16short-circuited by the injury, and I think they were protecting him {slash} tanking down the stretch, so you didn't see him after week seven. He still led
2:22the team in receiving, which tells you a lot.
2:25>> Yeah, what? 369 yards he had last year, led the team. He didn't catch a pass since like mid-October or something, but
2:32um I'm going to do a little my good fancy on you here, boys. I'm going to do a little screen sharing from the RPO
2:37website.
2:38>> Look at you.
2:38>> See if we can Yeah, look at the player comparison tool. Garrett Wilson, this is 2024. Look at the comps here
2:44>> go.
2:44>> Wilson. Ja'Marr Chase, Ja'Marr Chase, Antonio Brown, Stefon Diggs when he's with the Vikings, DeAndre Hopkins when he's with the Texans. I mean, like
2:53these are this is what it for again player isolating statistics, how often he gets open, how often he makes plays in the open field. I mean, this is where
3:01um you see like the talent that is available for him to your point, Dan.
3:06And I think if you what's even funnier is if you look at 2025 data here for him, too. You got like
3:11three Chris Olave comps in the top >> Right.
3:14>> five comps.
3:15>> Same draft class.
3:15>> And same draft class, but I think even more instructive, Dan, it's like what happened with Chris Olave last year?
3:23>> Right.
3:23>> You got a really good offensive play caller and play designer in Kellen Moore, and it looks like at least right
3:28now you found a quarterback in Tyler Shuck. Like and I mean, from from a fantasy standpoint, from like a I think
3:34a real-life statistical standpoint, Chris Olave had a top-10 caliber counting stats statistical season. It's like that path is available for Garrett
3:41Wilson, I think 100%.
3:43>> Yeah, and you can anchor an offense around him, and you know, they made to your point that you know, the talent
3:50they have like Breece Hall who went down with a groin injury, hopefully it's not too serious.
3:54I think a guy that's laying in the weeds a little bit, another guy whose season got wrecked by an injury last year is
3:58Braelon Allen. I think he is a really talented, one of the more talented backup running backs in the league, and he really compliments Breece Hall well.
4:07You bring in Omar Cooper.
4:09He's a little further down the depth chart right now, but I'm not going to read too much into that. I'm going to
4:13more read into it, and that's what I if you don't mind, Matt, if I could ask you, cuz Isaiah Williams you know, best
4:20punt returner in the league last year.
4:23He's a veteran, [clears throat] outplaying a rookie Cooper, doesn't freak me out. In fact, I'm like, you know what? Isaiah Williams Williams
4:29maybe deserves a chance to get some reps show given what he showed on special teams last year.
4:35The AD Mitchell hype, and I know he flashed a little bit after the trade from the Colts, there is a lot of
4:41positivity coming out of Jets camp about what he has looked like, that he is a clear-cut number two receiver in this
4:50offense. And if he is actually a guy, a breakout candidate, first of all, it's starting to look like the potential steal of the decade by Moji, the trade
4:58with the Colts for two first-round picks and AD Mitchell. But I'm curious if you're buying into this, because if Garrett Wilson is as good as we think, and if
5:06the offense with the quarterback and a new play caller is better, it can't be worse, then there's going to be opportunities for Mitchell to actually
5:13be a playmaker. I'd love to see it work out, because I you hear about these type of guys all the time, and then you cut
5:18to week nine, and he has 14 catches.
5:20Where do you stand on Mitchell?
5:23>> Yeah, AD Mitchell is kind of he's like the one of the more bizarro receivers in the league, because I mean, if if listeners of this show
5:33know this, that I'm pretty constantly, you know, even I got to get Wilson last year. He he got this type of role
5:38change, and I'm looking for what's like in Nathaniel Hackett Aaron Rodgers's, you know, kind of old-school static boring offense. Garrett was just pretty
5:46much like an outside on ball receiver, and I think that Tanner Engstrand did wasn't perfect, but he did do some fun things from a pass game design
5:53standpoint, including like Garrett Wilson getting the most snaps that he's ever seen from a percentage standpoint off the line of scrimmage. He got back
5:59to playing in the slot a lot more, much more of like a dynamic pre-snap role.
6:04I'm almost always advocating for receivers to get that type of treatment.
6:08AD Mitchell's like the opposite, Dan, where I'm like, just stick him at X receiver and let him go against press man coverage and we kind of run like
6:16four routes. You want him running nine routes, you want him running curl routes, slant routes, out routes.
6:20Everything else is kind of a show for AD Mitchell, >> [laughter] >> especially when he's like working against zone coverage. He doesn't have
6:27like the timing and tempo to consistently settle and separate there, but he is really good when he's working in those isolated one-on-one man
6:36coverage situations, which for the most part, that's what the Jets had him do last year once they got him. He was
6:40mostly an outside on ball boundary receiver. And again, that allows you to do more fun things with Garrett Wilson.
6:46And we never really saw those guys together, right? Like Garrett was basically out for the season by the time, you know, AD Mitchell was there.
6:53>> a snap together.
6:54>> No, they didn't Yeah, they didn't play a snap together. So like, I think that will be really fun to watch those guys
6:59in tandem cuz even if AD Mitchell is limited in that way, and I think he will always be you know, just a little bit
7:06mistake prone and not perfectly again like a zone coverage being receiver. I mean, 6% tile success rate versus zone coverage last season. Obviously, that's
7:14not what you want, especially in a very zone heavy league, but 82nd percentile success rate versus press. So there's that kind of wide gap there.
7:22>> Yeah.
7:23>> And And that's I think the high variance type of player Mitchell is, which ideally is a number two or complementary.
7:29>> I was going to say like we know there's there's situational pass rushers. Are we dealing with a situational receiver here?
7:35>> Yeah, definitely. I mean, again, that's why almost always I'd want to see a guy move around, you know, do this, that,
7:41and the other, but he is someone that I think needs to just do a small handful of like limited things, but he could be really good at
7:48those limited things.
7:49>> Omar Cooper, let's let's move our way up the step chart.
7:52>> Well, okay, by the way, can I Well, don't you feel too like it would it compared to our Browns conversation
7:58where there's a void under center like and and we've had conversations back and forth about Gino on our show and like um
8:06I do think Gino at least gives you a steady presence at quarterback. I guess my question is like do you trust and I
8:13do, but I don't I I have some questions if Frank Reich is going to revolutionize any offense at this point, but it's
8:20better than some of what they had play caller.
8:23>> [laughter] >> Revolutionize? Who's asking Frank Reich to revolutionize anything?
8:27>> of course I'm saying he's not going to revolutionize anything, but I do I I do and I have questions as as well, Matt,
8:32but I do think it's better than they've had a lot of hot and cold and mostly cold play caller situations in New York
8:39and obviously a mess at quarterback.
8:41Like Gino and Reich feel steady to me.
8:43If if slightly dull, steady.
8:48I'll leave it there.
8:48>> say majorly dull. I would say majorly dull on the Frank Reich side of it there. Dan, how did you as a fan, how
8:54did you feel about the Tanner Engstrand offense?
8:56>> Um I thought he did show some promise, um but also it's very hard to get a gauge on it when Brady Cook and Tyrod
9:07Taylor and Justin Fields is afraid to throw the ball. It's just like it was kind of it was kind of wonky. I think
9:14everything about [clears throat] the off season with Glenn was is a as a Jets fan, like if you're asking Jets fans,
9:19what are you most nervous about? It's not Geno Smith. In fact, on our show I've been talking about the I feel like he's he can he has a chance
9:26to really uh move the ball and um play much closer to a Seattle days than his Raiders days, which is not at an all pro
9:34level, but at a respectable professional level and I think Reich doesn't [clears throat] give you the highest ceiling, and he's certainly not
9:40going to be revolutionary, but maybe he brings um some just steadiness to the offense, and they're league average. I think uh that would be a huge I don't
9:50think, I know, that would be a huge upgrade. Uh the question is with Glenn, like does he have the ability and Jets fans, their questions are about
10:00Aaron Glenn, right? And Engstrand, you certainly could have made the case that he deserved a second year on the job, but Glenn, I think part partly or mostly
10:09out of nerves about his own job security, kind of cleaned house, and I think Reich was to him the safer bet.
10:15And what he might not have realized, Aaron Glenn, is cuz you got to play chess as a head coach, is that Frank
10:21Reich is also kind of the perfect interim coach to ride out the rest of a season if ownership decides and management decides, okay, this thing is
10:31not going to work or eight we have 18 Now we have 24 games of evidence telling us that we made a mistake with Aaron
10:37Glenn, let's just slide in Frank Reich, get to the end of the season, and reboot with a new play caller.
10:42>> So, like, I think Reich has potentially multiple roles in this organization. Um >> But yeah, like I don't know, like he's
10:4964 years old. He's been around the block. The last time we saw him was with the Carolina Panthers, and that wasn't
10:55going well. He got fired after a one and 10 start. Uh they scored more than 20 points three times in Reich's 11 games,
11:02did not score more than 15 in his final five games. So, that's not good. So, sure, we could definitely look half
11:09glass full with the Reich um setup, but I do I just like Gino with these weapons. Like getting back to your
11:16original thesis, Gino, and not just the weapons, the offensive line. I think this is a really potentially good offensive line with
11:25Olu Fashionu and Mims on the tackles.
11:28Joe Tippmann emerged as one of the better right guards last year. They just gave him a new contract. Josh Myers does
11:33a nice job at center. The only new guy is Parm um at left guard. I think if you give Geno time, which he had no time
11:40with the Raiders, I think he's going to make plays with a potential top-10 level wide receiver and some exciting guys. We
11:47haven't even talked about Kenyan Seddik.
11:49>> Right. Seddik's a tough one, too, cuz he's he's banged up, you know, through camp and everything, but I mean, that
11:54that was what was interesting on draft night is they take Kenyan Seddik, who more is more of that like move tight
11:58end. He's not the traditional wide body type, get your hand in the dirt, do all the blocking, but that's what Mason
12:03Taylor is. So, you have the makings of kind of an interesting 12 personnel group there again with a traditional X receiver in Eddie Mitchell and then a
12:11movement guy like that Z receiver in Garrett Wilson, who, you know, you can kick into the slot and like two-by-one formation. All kinds of really things
12:18really fun things you could do there with a guy like Garrett Wilson and that 12 personnel package, but their first-round pick, Omar Cooper, their
12:25second first-round pick, third first-round pick, >> third first-round pick, >> third first-round pick, Omar Cooper, um is a kind of an interesting variable in
12:34all this, too, Dan, because he is to me like probably a slot receiver in the NFL. He was a slot receiver last year at
12:40Indiana, and obviously he's been competing and, you know, maybe even lost the starting slot receiver job to Williams who you mentioned from camp
12:47here.
12:48Like that was an odd kind of pairing there cuz how do you get both guys on the field if Seddik is this move tight end
12:56and then, you know, one guy's like a pure slot receiver who's not going to be on the field in two receiver sets, 12
13:01personnel. How do you maximize both players? And that's where the Frank Reich thing comes back to like it's a little bit of it. Like I can get myself
13:07hot and bothered about this receiver group and the offensive line together, but it's like is that the cold shower here? Like, oh, well, I don't know I
13:14don't really trust Frank Reich. The last time we saw him pretty much just ran a RPO, you know, 11 personnel. And
13:19by the way, Cade Klubnik, their fourth-round pick, >> Yeah.
13:23>> that was a little bit of a canary in the coal mine, too, to me. He's like all Cade Klubnik in in in college was RPOs
13:29and that type that very kind of offense that's going a little stale in the college football ranks. And man, you saw the phone call between him and Frank
13:36Reich and Frank's all gassed up like, "Yeah, I got my RPO boy in here. Like we're going to do this thing just like
13:41it's Carson Wentz in 2017 or whatever."
13:46That makes me a little nervous like putting all that together.
13:48>> Yeah, I think uh Yeah, I think it's to again connect the Jets and the Browns. I think as a Jets fan you want
13:55to and you hope that you have enough offensive um intellectualism to get these guys opportunities to make plays, develop as
14:05rookies, and if Aaron Glenn ends up getting shipped out of here, which I think it's a coin flip whether he makes
14:10it through the season quite honestly.
14:12Like you want this job this Jets job to be very attractive to the top play caller / coach out there. And obviously, you
14:20don't want Arch Manning or whoever to be like, "I don't want to go to the Jets."
14:22You want people to look like at what we're talking about this time next year is like, "Wait, if I go to this team
14:27they had a maybe a top 10 back of the top 10 offensive line and like how many first-round pick playmakers here?" Like and it's like,
14:35"Okay, I want to go to the Jets." And then then you could very quickly get this team into a very optimistic place. But
14:42that's not the 2026. It's a developmental year for this team as well.
14:46>> Yeah, in some ways it's almost like they could be too good to find their way to a top quarterback.
14:50>> saying. They're going to win eight games or something and then it's >> But they have three first-round picks and that's going to really that's going
14:56to really help them. And the the first-round picks that are not their own, it's the Indianapolis Colts where there's a lot of high variance there.
15:04And I know we're all gassing up the Cowboys or a lot of us are this this season, but you know, the Cowboys that
15:09could go always go sideways as well. So, you could end up hypothetically with three picks in the top 15 and maybe two
15:15top 10 picks if the Colts the wheels fall off. And then you can make a move up the board and you'll get one of these
15:21guys. And you'll by the time you get to rookie mini camp, you will be talking this guy up like he's Sam Darnold or
15:28Joe Namath or >> Yeah. It It certainly feels to me, you know, if somebody if like you're doing dynasty fantasy football whatever, and maybe
15:36this has been like always the case with like a guy a player like Garrett Wilson, but these guys could all be so much
15:41better in 2027 if they find the right quarterback. You know, I mean even AD Mitchell like I think he could have a
15:46solid season this year and he's part of your long-term core and you know, Omar Cooper almost certainly is going to start the season slow, but I I will tell
15:52you this Dan, I skill set wise I have my I did have some questions about him. I thought he was kind of more like a high round two
16:00when he went late round one. It kind of went in an appropriate range I think for his skill set. He is coming from a
16:05little bit of a Mickey Mouse offense in Indiana. Like a slow learning curve might not be the biggest surprise for him. But man, that guy is definitely
16:13going to work his ass off. Like that is for sure. He is the one receiver I've been doing this now since like I
16:19said 2014. Obviously my amount of talking to players skewed much more in my recent career than than in 2014 certainly, you know, but he's the one
16:30player I've talked to over the course of all that time that has ever asked me like I usually like to ask the guys,
16:34"Hey, what's your you know, what's your favorite route to run?" Like let's compare it to your chart or whatever.
16:38After the interview was done, he was like, "What's my like worst graded route? What can What's What's the area where I can actually get better?"
16:46And and funny enough like it was I told him he's like, "I think like dropping your weight, stopping on curl routes is
16:51something that I noticed was is is like success rate wise your lowest one." He was like, "Yeah, that's actually funny that's that's what I've been working on.
16:58Like I know that's something I got to get better at." Like specifically against man coverage. So, I don't know.
17:03>> I like living in a I like living in a universe where Omar Cooper becomes like a Jets legend and Matt Harmon had maybe
17:11a slight role in that happen.
17:13>> You had something to do with it. You just like >> 0.5% credit. You know, he becomes a Hall of Famer.
17:18>> Like you maybe get a shout-out in like when he gives his speech. Or maybe he asks you to introduce him because that
17:23just like stuck with him as like a part of his journey in the narrative when he thinks back.
17:27>> That feels great. Yeah, I I I think >> [laughter] >> like maybe I can mention that story on the podcast God willing, you know, 15
17:34years from now.
17:34>> My friend Omar, we were talking we were chopping it up one day over beers.
17:39>> [laughter] >> When he's doing his like cell phone prospect interview, you know.
17:44So I'm sure I'm sure he has fun memories of the entire thing. But again, a guy that we'll see skill set wise but I
17:50would bet on him eventually figuring it out in this whole kind of young core coming together. So
