0:00Malachi Fields out of Notre Dame. The
0:02one major concern obviously was the 4 6
0:071 40 that he ran.
0:10>> Well, he's a former quarterback and I
0:12think that is like new important
0:14remember that he's still relatively new
0:16to the wide receiver position.
0:19>> Look at the release.
0:20>> There's your separation. Great route.
0:21>> Stutter and go. Gets by clean.
0:23>> That is unbelievable.
0:24>> May be the greatest catch I've ever
0:26seen.
0:29>> And we go to the New York Giants at
0:303.10, 10th pick in the third round. They
0:33take a big boy in Malachi Fields out of
0:36Notre Dame. 6'4, 218
0:40lb. He had a 38-in vertical, which is
0:43really really good uh for his size. He
0:46had a 10-4 broad as well. The one major
0:50concern obviously was the 4 6 1 40 that
0:56he ran. Um that is tight end speed.
0:58That's not good. Uh that being said,
1:01Matt, uh Lance Zierlein did comp him to
1:04a Michael Pittman
1:05type of wide receiver. I don't quite
1:08necessarily see that. I don't know,
1:09maybe I'm wrong. What do you see here
1:11with Malachi Fields joining Malik
1:13Neighbors, Darnell Mooney who they
1:15picked up in the offseason, and of
1:17course hey listen, of course we got to
1:19talk about Darius Slayton as well. This
1:22is the Darius Slayton podcast. But Matt,
1:25Malik Malachi Fields joining Neighbors,
1:27Mooney, and Darius Slayton in New York.
1:30>> Maybe they've finally found a guy who um
1:33you know, might might might displace
1:35Darius Slayton as that boundary
1:36receiver.
1:37>> Never.
1:38>> Yeah, I mean I never happens, but they
1:40also have Calvin Austin on this roster
1:42they signed in free agency as well. So,
1:44with that in mind, I it's why I kind of
1:46like the Malachi Fields
1:48pick here by the New York Giants. By the
1:49way, they traded up to get him. They
1:51traded multiple picks including a 2027th
1:54fourth round pick and teams were I'm
1:55sure you noticed this during the Teams
1:57were hoarding those 27 picks cuz
1:59everybody believes that's going to be a
2:02big time class.
2:03>> Um I've heard big receiver class big
2:06time receiver class, too. I mean, every
2:07year's a good receiver class, but like
2:09this is like a big time guys at the top.
2:11So, good for us, buddy. Good for us.
2:14>> [laughter]
2:14>> Good It's going to be good for us. Um
2:16but anyways,
2:17teams were hoarding those 27th picks but
2:19the Giants the 27th picks but the Giants
2:21did part for one to get uh Malachi
2:24Fields here and uh I I I do like the
2:27move to to get Fields because
2:29um I was I was pretty
2:31there were there were wide range of
2:32opinions on Malachi Fields. You know, at
2:34times early in the process before the 46
2:3740,
2:38he was kind of getting first round buzz
2:41and I wasn't quite there with that. But,
2:44you know, there are like some
2:45production-based analysts that just hate
2:47Malachi Fields cuz he never had a big
2:49like kind of college breakout season.
2:52He's [clears throat] a little bit of an
2:53older prospect. I think I've seen his
2:55age kind of all over the place, but I
2:57believe he's like an older prospect,
2:59too.
3:00Um so,
3:01not 100% sure about that, but I'm pretty
3:03sure about that. Um anyways, like
3:07I I like Fields though for what he
3:08showed and I think one thing that's lost
3:10in kind of the production-based stuff
3:12for him and I do think this shows up on
3:14tape.
3:14>> Yeah.
3:15>> This is a former quarterback. Like he
3:16played quarterback in high school. Uh
3:18actually in Charlottesville, Virginia,
3:20not far from uh Charlottesville.
3:21>> Yeah, he was at UVA. Funny story,
3:24actually. Um I was at a uh I was staying
3:27at a hotel in Charlottesville.
3:29Um
3:29and it was at the it's at the spa. I was
3:33getting to get a little treatment done.
3:34>> Okay. Okay.
3:34>> Uh you know, and the one of the
3:37therapists there was like, "Oh, I tell
3:38them what I do. I play you know, uh
3:41cover the NFL."
3:42>> Yeah.
3:42>> She mentions, "Oh, you got to keep an
3:44eye out on uh one of the kids I know,
3:46Malachi Fields." And I was like, "Okay,
3:47lady." Uh and THEN HE SAID, [laughter]
3:52HE GOT DRAFTED.
3:53>> ALL RIGHT, CRAZY LADY. Don't be talking
3:55to me about Paul. What do you know about
3:57Paul?
3:59I don't want to assume just cuz she's,
4:01you know,
4:02doing taking care of skin care or that
4:04she's doing the facials at the at the I
4:06mean, come on. I don't She might She
4:07knows Maybe she knows Paul. I'm not I'm
4:08not assuming just because of that. But
4:11she apparently did because yeah, Malachi
4:13Fields is [laughter] a freaking top 100
4:14draft pick. Um so they're very
4:17interesting uh story there. Uh cuz she
4:20she knew uh her son knew him in high
4:22school. So anyways, Malachi Fields gets
4:23drafted by the Giants. So shout out to
4:25Susan.
4:26>> Um
4:27>> There you go.
4:27>> 90% sure that was her name.
4:29>> Okay.
4:29>> Anyways, whatever. Nobody cares about
4:30that. What we do care about though is uh
4:32Malachi Fields
4:34Well, he's a former quarterback and I
4:36think that is like new important to
4:38remember that he's still relatively new
4:40to the wide receiver position.
4:42>> Okay.
4:43>> Go went to UVA, again in
4:45Charlottesville, went to UVA, so stayed
4:47around before transferring to Notre
4:49Dame. And then he became a collegiate
4:51wide receiver. Essentially was kind of
4:52recruited as a wide receiver, but yeah,
4:54he played played football as a as a
4:56quarterback in high school. And I think
4:58you kind of got to remember that he's
4:59still relatively new to receiver, but he
5:02does I think show some quarterback
5:04traits.
5:05Um I always thought that Cooper Kupp,
5:07you know, as a collegiate
5:09receiver who had a quarterback
5:11background, um came from like a
5:13quarterback family. He really always
5:15stood out to me as a guy that, you know,
5:17diagnosed in red zone coverage well. And
5:20I think that Fields, when you look at
5:22his reception perception data, there's
5:24no question that he struggles to
5:25separate on vertical routes against
5:27press man coverage. You know, his nine
5:28route success rate, post routes is is
5:31all pretty low. And obviously he's below
5:33the 35th percentile in success rate
5:36versus man press, but 63rd percentile
5:39success rate against zone coverage,
5:4081.6% success rate. And I think you see
5:44that in ways where especially he's
5:45working back to the football or running
5:48his routes against zone over the middle
5:49of the field.
5:51He settles in the right areas, works
5:53back to the football well, diagnoses and
5:55attacks leverage. So, I think you kind
5:57of see some of that quarterback-ness in
5:59his game, which is why James, you know,
6:02um
6:03wrote this article for the site, I did a
6:04video breakdown on YouTube about like
6:06the outcomes for poor separators in the
6:08NFL. Um and a lot of these guys end up
6:11becoming big slot receivers, these guys
6:13who don't separate in in college, but
6:14they become high-volume big-time players
6:16in the NFL. Almost all of them, they're
6:18either volatile deep threats, you know,
6:20kind of um the Christian Watsons uh
6:23early in his career, you know, Kayshon
6:25Boutte this past year, he was one of
6:26these guys like a volatile deep threat
6:28type, or they become power slots. And I
6:31kind of think Fields could blur the line
6:33between both. You know, like I think
6:35that Fields obviously from a contested
6:37catch standpoint, a ball-winning
6:38standpoint,
6:39>> Yeah.
6:39>> like I I do want that guy, you know,
6:41big-ass 6'4 210-plus frame on ball
6:45running vertical routes and like, "Hey,
6:47by the way, Jackson Dart loves to throw
6:49it up into tight coverage."
6:51Uh yeah, we want that guy playing on the
6:53boundary a little bit. But, in that
6:54Michael Pittman frame, not a big slot
6:57necessarily, but like let's get him 30%
7:00snaps in the slot like Pittman has
7:01pushed at sometimes towards 30%, and at
7:04least get him off the line of scrimmage
7:06to run some of those like in-breaking
7:08routes against zone coverage. I I just
7:10think there's a fascinating player here
7:12and like there's something with Malachi
7:13Fields that I like.
7:14>> I hate to burst your bubble.
7:16>> Oh, go ahead.
7:18>> First of all, I obviously agree with all
7:20of your assessments of Malachi Fields.
7:22Um I will say he was um when I watched
7:25him play, I watched a lot of Notre Dame
7:27football.
7:28I cover the um the Big Ten for uh my
7:31local NBC affiliate here. But, um I
7:34watched a lot of Malachi Fields. He's
7:35just to me he's just slow off the line,
7:38you know? I think he kind of sort of he
7:40just takes his time. Um
7:42and and it doesn't serve him well when
7:45he's trying to get open quickly, but it
7:47serves him well, I think, in, you know,
7:49zone progression, like you talked about.
7:50I thought he was really good at
7:52diagnosing zone plays and saying, "All
7:54right, I'm going to take my time getting
7:56into these spots." I think he was really
7:58patient in that regard. Okay, now that
8:01being said,
8:02>> [clears throat]
8:03>> this is not the right coaching staff for
8:04that man. We got John Harbaugh and
8:07freaking Matt Nagy.
8:08>> I know.
8:09>> They're going to try to They're going to
8:10find a way to use Malachi Fields. I
8:12promise you, old-school John Harbaugh,
8:14we got Matt Nagy who has not been a good
8:16talent evaluator.
8:17Um they're going to see this 6-4, 220-lb
8:20frame and say, "Yeah, you're an X
8:21receiver. What are you talking about?
8:22This is what you played in college.
8:24You're you're a ball winner downfield.
8:26Um you're going to play X for us. That's
8:28That's going to be a role. What it's
8:30going to allow us to do is get Darius
8:31Slayton off the ball like he normally
8:33does. He's going to be our
8:35He's going to be our flanker. Uh then
8:36we've got, you know, um we've got Malik
8:39Nabers running around all over the
8:40football field.
8:43I just think that that coaching staff is
8:45going to look at this body of Malachi
8:47Fields and look at his collegiate role
8:49and look at his ball winning downfield
8:51and say, "Yep, you're an outside X.
8:52You're a boundary outside X." If he
8:54gets,
8:55you know, maybe he plays some flanker
8:57stuff to allow Malik Nabers to go play
8:59X, you know? But I I I agree with you
9:03that obviously a player like this should
9:05see at least at least 30% of his snaps
9:09in the slot. I just think with this
9:10coaching staff, I just doubt that we
9:12would ever see that.
9:14>> Yeah, I just don't think Slayton is
9:15going to have a big Maybe I'm wrong. I
9:17don't think he's going to have a big
9:18role on this team. Like they just traded
9:19up for Fields, they brought in Calvin
9:21Austin, they brought in Darnell Mooney,
9:22who does have history way back in the
9:24day with um Matt Nagy in Chicago. And
9:27obviously they have the neighbor
9:28>> that's right. I forgot about that. Yeah.
9:29>> Yeah, that's right. They have and um
9:31I actually like the way he was used in
9:33Atlanta more than he was used in
9:34Chicago. And that's a fair point and
9:36it's a a lot of what I said about the
9:37other New York team when we were talking
9:39about Allen Lazard, Cooper, and and Kony
9:40Ealy like almost any other coaching
9:43staff I'd [laughter] I'd I'd trust that
9:44they could figure this out. And like the
9:46next Jets offensive coaching staff will
9:48probably do fine with those guys. Um but
9:50like
9:51this is the Frank Reich-ness. That was
9:53tough for me to get past, and I think
9:54that's also true obviously of Matt Nagy.
9:56My hang-ups there. Um couple just things
9:59that I think are worth noting.
10:01One, Neighbors is obviously like a guy
10:03that you would love to eat you're going
10:05to get him snaps at X receiver, which is
10:07why I think you take a player like
10:09Malachi Fields because you want to get
10:11Neighbors some snaps as the outside X,
10:13but you also want to be able to move him
10:14around. So, I think you want to take
10:15somebody who can credibly play both on
10:17and off the ball, which is what Malachi
10:20Fields will allow you to do. The other
10:22thing that's worth noting about this too
10:23that even last year Kansas City
10:26talk about them as like a static spread
10:27offense, they were only 21st in the NFL
10:29in plays with three plus receivers on
10:31the field. Like they did get into some
10:32more heavier personnel packages, and
10:35obviously this team has Theo Johnson
10:37still on the roster. Uh Max Toscano was
10:39talking about Theo Johnson when I had
10:40him on the show as like an underrated
10:42player. I don't think that you know, he
10:44obviously has had issues catching the
10:45football, but otherwise I think he's
10:46still a good player who's developing.
10:48They spent money on Isaiah Likely to
10:50bring him over, and he's not an inline
10:52like Johnson I think is an inline tight
10:53end. Um you know, obviously uh Likely is
10:57more of the
10:58big slot player slash you know, move
11:00tight end type.
11:02Like when I just look at Fields, again a
11:05reason to kind of maybe bet on him is
11:06just like he's going to be on the field
11:07a lot because I think he's going to play
11:08X in two receiver sets. Malik Neighbors
11:11is your Z. And then I do think they can
11:14kind of kick him around a little bit
11:15because Neighbors can actually play on
11:18ball X. You know, of course Neighbors is
11:19probably not going to be healthy to
11:21start the season. If he's if he's
11:22active, he won't be 100%. So, that might
11:25be just like uh something to remember
11:27too. But yeah, I think that when I look
11:29at all of these other body types, I do
11:31agree with you that
11:33um other than Slaton who can be a
11:34sacrificial X receiver at times.
11:36>> Yeah.
11:37>> Mooney's a Z. Uh Neighbors is a guy you
11:39want to move all over the place.
11:41Obviously, Calvin Austin's not playing X
11:43receiver for you at like a sub-180 lbs
11:45or whatever.
11:45>> Yeah.
11:46>> Uh so I I do think Fields will be a
11:47primary X, but I don't think he will be
11:49exclusive X receiver, but I like his
11:52ability obviously in contested catch
11:54situations. Uh he has some of the best
11:56catches you're going to see in tight
11:57coverage. So, you don't want to take him
11:59away from X, but I do think obviously
12:01like he's not someone where it's like
12:02Elijah Sorat, I'm pretty well convinced
12:04like he should be a power slot.
12:06>> Yeah.
12:06>> I at least think that Fields, you want
12:08him to play at X receiver a little bit,
12:11but you also want to move him around,
12:12too. And I think that yeah, there's a
12:13chance we could see that with this Matt
12:15Nagy coaching staff, but
12:16I agree with you they will probably be
12:18very old school.
12:19>> [laughter]
12:20>> Um one skillset that I have been
12:23obsessed with is in contested catch in
12:26college, where are they winning
12:28uh those contested catch attempts? Is it
12:30up top going over the top, or is it on
12:33these back shoulders? Um and it is
12:37interesting because Malachi Fields, all
12:38of his contested catches look exactly
12:40the same. Like he is climbing that
12:42ladder uh and going upstairs to go win
12:45that football. I don't think that pairs
12:47well with every quarterback. Josh Allen
12:50doesn't he did that early in his career.
12:52I think as of late, he absolutely does
12:55not do that. He's going to throw you
12:56that back shoulder if it's going to be
12:58contested, but it's going to be low. And
13:00you've got to be able to catch that ball
13:01low if you're going to catch it in a
13:03contested situation.
13:05Um luckily for Malachi Fields, Jackson
13:08Dart is that guy
13:10>> Yes. [laughter]
13:11>> that will throw it up and go ask his
13:13receivers to go climb that ladder. So,
13:16uh I do think that that uh is a good
13:18pairing there uh for Jackson Fields and
13:20Malachi Fields. Uh Jackson Dart rather
13:22and Malachi Fields, too.
13:24>> I I love that point and just building
13:26off that point as well.
13:28Yes, he's going to throw him contested
13:30go routes. The other route that uh
13:32Jackson Dart loves to throw is like a is
13:35a deeper stop route, like a 10-yard stop
13:37route. And if you look at Malachi
13:39Fields'
13:40uh route charts on reception perception,
13:42his two most commonly run routes,
13:44obviously nine route, just under 26%.
13:46Just under 27% though was the curl route
13:49and an 81% success rate on those.
13:51>> It's his best route.
13:53>> It's his best route. Dropping his weight
13:55uh both against man and zone coverage.
13:57Like his best separation ones against
13:59man coverage probably come on those curl
14:00routes and stop routes. And that's a
14:02route that uh Jackson Dart really likes
14:04to throw on the boundary as well. So, um
14:06I think this was a good uh what is our
14:09quarterback, let's scout a receiver for
14:11our quarterback. And again, specifically
14:12targeted Fields
14:14as we saw with the trade up to get him.
14:17>> Um Caleb
