Safety/cornerback is competing with Marcus Epps for the starting safety job and is the only defensive player getting reps at three different positions (nickel, safety, dime) in camp. Fangio deliberately gave Carter extensive snaps at safety in the preseason opener because Epps has played safety his entire career and Carter needs more reps in new territory to be properly evaluated and prepared. If Carter doesn't win the starting job, he'll serve as a valuable and versatile backup.
