McCarthy earns starting role after historic fourth-quarter performance off bench

McCarthy leapfrogged Jameis Winston to earn the starting role against the Texans after producing a historic fourth quarter off the bench against the Saints (243 passing yards, three scoring drives in nearly bringing the Giants back from a 24-point deficit). Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy indicated McCarthy's readiness has progressed significantly: Nagy's highlighted play call sheet for McCarthy expanded from 50 percent in Week 2 to 90 percent last week to 100 percent this week, reflecting McCarthy's improved understanding of the scheme and ability to discuss pass game reads and snap mechanics in practice.
