Tommy DeVito, the Patriots' second-string quarterback, started the preseason game and showed inconsistency. He had flashes of good play, including a long pass to Cam Dorner (wiped off by penalty) and touchdown curl route passes to Kyle Williams, but also missed several throws including what should have been a deep TD to Williams that he left short. The source notes his inconsistency is why he is a backup and shouldn't surprise anyone, though he had looked good in camp so the source expected a more consistent night. He remains a fine backup.

Valuable insurance plan at QB2 behind Drake Maye. DeVito has experience being elevated up the depth chart as a rookie, when he won three straight games for the Giants. He maintains a "prepare like a starter" mentality regardless of depth chart position: "That whole prepare like a starter thing was very real to me my rookie year when I was young... I was the three one week, and then the next week, I was starting. You've always got to stay ready. So I just keep that mindset." This readiness and proven ability to step in and win games makes him a reliable backup option.

Showing impressive deep-ball accuracy and overall performance in training camp practices. Over recent sessions, DeVito has impressed operating the second-team offense with multiple perfectly thrown deep balls: a 40-plus-yard completion to DeMario Douglas in Friday's intra-squad scrimmage, two connections with Kyle Williams over the last two days, and a long touchdown to Mack Hollins down the right sideline in a one-minute drill against Indianapolis. Safety Dell Pettus observed: "The talent always been there but he's just in a flow state right now... he looks fantastic." Head coach Jeff Vrabel added: "2 Chains is doing a nice job... He continues to learn, and with it being a new system, I think it got his attention a little bit better... I think he's really done a nice job."

Elevated to primary backup (QB2) in Year 2 after spending all of 2025 as third-stringer behind Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs. Now receiving on-field practice reps in the Patriots offense for the first time since joining the team in August 2025, having previously learned only in scout-team situations. DeVito emphasized the difference: "It's one thing to be in the classroom and be in it and learn and everything, but it's another thing to get reps in it... My first reps were during OTAs (this year). So to be able to actually take everything from the classroom and bring it to the field and physically feel mistakes, that's personally how I learn my best."

Backup QB earned 'standout of the day' honors at joint practice with Colts, outperforming starter Drake Maye in part by converting his one-minute drill with a touchdown pass to Eli Raridon; also connected on deep shots to Kyle Williams and Mack Hollins, and threw touchdown passes to both Hunter Henry and Efton Chism. DeVito, buried on depth chart in 2025 with no offensive reps until OTAs, has now secured a stranglehold on the No. 2 QB spot and credits his development to getting consistent reps: 'It's one thing to be in the classroom and be in it and learn and everything, but it's another thing to get reps. Because last year, I didn't get any reps in the offense; my first rep was during OTAs. So, to be able to actually take everything from the classroom and bring it to the field — physically learn mistakes — that's personally how I learn my best.'

Tommy DeVito continues to string together positive practices, turning in another strong performance against the Colts. DeVito connected on a deep post touchdown to Kyle Williams, was sharp working the underneath, and was effective finding his tight ends in the red zone hitting Eli Raridon and Hunter Henry for scores. In his end-of-game drive, DeVito needed just one play as he found Mack Hollins deep down the right sideline for a score, then connected with Raridon for another touchdown. Head coach Mike Vrabel praised DeVito: '2 Chains is doing a nice job. He continues to learn, and with it being a new system, I think it got his attention a little bit better, as opposed to saying, "Hey, I know what this is," and kind of taking it for granted. I think he's really done a nice job.'

Backup quarterback Tommy DeVito has been peppering Raridon with targets during training camp and praised the rookie tight end's physical tools and development. DeVito said 'Have you seen him? That's a big target. I bet you'd want to throw to him too. He's big, he's athletic, his confidence is growing.' DeVito noted Raridon has awesome hands and the frame to succeed, and emphasized the importance of keeping him encouraged and getting him reps to help him learn the offense.
