Baker Mayfield

PositiveInjury13:00

Baker Mayfield is pushing to make his return this Sunday versus the Steelers after suffering a thumb injury in week three against the Vikings; like Caleb Williams, he wants to get back on the field as soon as possible, and the timeline appears realistic for a near-term return.

Insight page

Brock Purdy

PositiveProjection22:10

Purdy has the top QBR in the fourth quarter this season; he has not been sacked and has not turned the ball over in those situations, demonstrating elite end-of-game management. He led an eight-play, 43-yard drive in five minutes to set up the game-winning field goal in the 49ers' 32-29 win over the Seahawks.

Insight page

Bryce Young

PositiveProjection32:28

Bryce Young is leading the NFL with 317 passing yards per game this season, representing a significant step forward in his development; the Panthers' passing attack is now a very real threat that the Eagles will have to contend with.

Insight page

Caleb Williams

NegativeInjury10:00

Caleb Williams has missed the last three games for the Bears. The team suffered their first loss without him this week to the Packers, with Case Keenum and Tyson Baygent both seeing time in Williams' absence.

Insight page
NegativeInjury10:00

Caleb Williams is pushing to return to the playing field after missing three games with a hamstring injury; he got practice in last week, felt good, and told the team he could push farther and have a realistic shot at returning. There is optimism he is on the right track and could be back on the field this week, though hamstring injuries carry tweaking risk. The Bears need him back as soon as possible, with Ben Johnson making it clear the timeline could be Atlanta or shortly after, though a quick Thursday turnaround against the Patriots limits the extra recovery window.

Insight page

Cam Ward

PositiveRole42:22

Despite posting three touchdowns and three interceptions with 187 total yards in a loss to the Texans—the second time this season the Titans have been under 200 total yards on offense—the organization remains committed to Cam Ward as the starter. The Titans believe his best football is still ahead of him, see progress and momentum, and expect a breakthrough at some point.

Insight page

Case Keenum

NegativeRole10:00

Case Keenum has seen time at quarterback for the Bears in Caleb Williams' absence over the last three games, with the Bears suffering their first loss without Williams this week to the Packers.

Insight page

Cooper Kupp

NegativeUsage21:58

Cupp was targeted in the 49ers' game-winning drive against the Seahawks, diving shy of the line to gain yards in a critical late-game situation.

Insight page

Daniel Jones

PositiveRole41:21

Giants offensive coordinator John Harper indicated the team will employ more up-tempo, no-huddle looks going forward with James at the helm, which means putting the ball in James's hands more frequently. This shift worked in the second half against the Commanders after the offense struggled in the first half; Harper told reporters they probably need to do more of that with James.

Insight page

DeVonta Smith

NegativeInjury18:39

DeVonta Smith missed the Eagles' London game but the team is expecting him back, with optimism heading into the work week for his return; he is one of the two most important offensive weapons for Jalen Hurts, though hamstring injuries require monitoring throughout the week to avoid re-aggravation.

Insight page

James Cook

PositiveUsage0:40

Cook scored the go-ahead touchdown in regulation to tie the game 27-27 late in the fourth quarter, then had a forced fumble punched out by Nate Landman early in the game; he was also involved in the Bills' overtime drive that led to their 37-34 victory over the Rams.

Insight page

Jayden Daniels

NegativeInjury13:36

Jaden Daniels is mentioned alongside Caleb Williams and Baker Mayfield as a quarterback with injury considerations and a thought that maybe he could wait another week before returning, though the full context is cut off in the transcript.

Insight page
NegativeRole24:04

Jaden Daniels deviated from the intended play call on the Rams' final offensive play; the original play was designed as a pass to the left sideline, but Daniels decided to do something else, contributing to a critical loss. This decision, combined with the offense's apparent lack of awareness of the game situation, reflects negatively on both the quarterback's decision-making and the coaching staff's communication.

Insight page

Josh Allen

PositiveUsage0:31

Allen led the Bills to a 37-34 overtime victory against the Rams, his first overtime win of his career; he had a 19-yard run to get the Bills inside field goal range in overtime, setting up Tyler Bass's game-winning field goal.

Insight page
PositiveProjection6:09

Josh Allen recorded his first overtime win of his career, breaking a 0-7 overtime record that included three postseason losses. This is a significant monkey off his back and demonstrates that things can go his way. Allen also rushed for 121 yards in the game, which is strong production.

Insight page
NegativeProjection6:30

Allen rushed for 121 yards in the Bills' overtime win, marking his first postseason overtime victory. While the performance is impressive in isolation, the broader concern is that the Bills' success remains heavily dependent on Allen's individual contributions rather than a balanced offensive attack; the team needs to develop more consistent supporting production to sustain playoff momentum.

Insight page

Kyren Williams

PositiveUsage0:52

Williams had a big catch on third down inside the five-yard line and scored the touchdown to tie the game 27-27 in the Rams' late fourth-quarter drive against the Bills.

Insight page

Lamar Jackson

PositiveInjury7:48

Lamar Jackson is optimistic to return from his ankle injury this week against the Browns after missing Sunday night's game against the Falcons. Ian Rappaport reports the Ravens are hopeful Jackson will be available; he did not practice last week but was closer to playing than initially assumed. Jackson has been extremely diligent in his recovery work at the facility. Rappaport expects Jackson to be on the field this weekend, though he notes Jackson has historically taken longer to recover from ankle injuries over the past couple of years.

Insight page

Malik Nabers

NegativeRole41:42

Malik Nabers is one of the Giants' two best playmakers and is expected to see increased involvement as the team shifts toward more up-tempo, no-huddle offensive looks with Daniel James at quarterback.

Insight page

Matthew Stafford

PositiveUsage0:45

Stafford expertly guided the Rams down the field in the final moments of regulation, orchestrating a touchdown drive that tied the game 27-27 against the Bills; he was one of the last two MVPs in the NFL alongside Josh Allen.

Insight page
NegativeProjection5:18

Stafford returned as an MVP-caliber quarterback with significant offensive firepower around him on the Rams, but the team has not lived up to high preseason expectations despite these additions. The Rams were expected to win many games handily with Aaron Donald rejoining the defense and Stafford leading the offense, yet they have been good but not great so far this season.

Insight page

Michael Penix Jr.

PositiveInjury11:30

Michael Penix Jr. is considered day to day with a rib injury suffered in Sunday night's game against the Dolphins in overtime; he was playing well before the injury tightened up and got cold on the sideline, forcing him out. There is optimism the injury won't keep him from playing again this Sunday versus the Bears, and if he is able to practice, there is a pretty good chance he will be able to play and continue the really strong play he has shown since returning from his knee injury.

Insight page

Puka Nacua

PositiveUsage0:49

Nacua recorded a first down on second and five during the Rams' late fourth-quarter touchdown drive that tied the game 27-27 in regulation against the Bills.

Insight page

Saquon Barkley

NegativeInjury30:03

Saquon Barkley missed the Eagles' London game but the team is expecting him back, with optimism heading into the work week for his return; he is one of the two most important offensive weapons for Jalen Hurts, though hamstring injuries require monitoring throughout the week to avoid re-aggravation.

Insight page

Tua Tagovailoa

NegativeRole12:00

Tua Tagovailoa came on in relief when Michael Penix Jr. was unable to continue with a rib injury in overtime against the Dolphins and eventually lost the game with an interception.

Insight page

Tyson Bagent

NegativeRole10:00

Tyson Bagent has seen time at quarterback for the Bears in Caleb Williams' absence over the last three games, with the Bears suffering their first loss without Williams this week to the Packers.

0:45He expertly guides the Rams all the way down the field.
0:49Puka Nacua with a first down on second and five.
0:52And now inside the five, Kyron Williams had a big catch on third down and he finishes off this touchdown drive.
0:58In the end zone they kick the extra point and we are headed to overtime.
1:03Matthew Stafford, Josh Allen, the last two MVPs in the NFL.
1:06Some respect at the coin toss. Bills get the ball first and Nate Landman who had already punched out the ball from
1:13the grasp of James Cook earlier in the game.
1:16Does it again this time the Rams recover and feel like they have a shot.
1:21Not a winning. For the win, Harrison Nevis from 48 yards out.
1:24No serve. Greg Russo, all six foot six inches of his frame, getting a finger on the football and giving James Cook
1:31and the Bills a new lease on life. And Josh Allen more than happy to take advantage.
1:36Here he goes for 19 already getting them inside the field goal range for Tyler Bass.
1:41Inside the 40, he had another 13 yards to set up a 45 yard attempt and Tyler Bass puts it through.
1:48And Josh Allen with the first overtime victory of his career.
1:5137-34. Bills go to four and one. Rams fall to two and three.
1:55And it was a tough night for Harrison Nevis.
1:58Missed that field goal. Missed the game winner after it got blocked.
2:02Missed more field goals than any kicker in the league thus far and is no longer the Rams kicker.
2:08Released today as the Rams signed Blake Groupie off the Jets practice squad.
2:12And now we will check in with Ian Rappaport on this move.
2:16Felt like the blocking a vacuum is a hard one, obviously, but this felt like it was the accumulation of a lot
2:23of things that had gone wrong with the field goal unit there in Harrison Nevis' time in L.A.
2:28Yeah, that's a fair summation right there. Sean Nevis saying after the game, the special teams unit, not just the block, but
2:35the entire special teams unit in general, just not good enough.
2:38And really threw some of the blame for this pretty stunning loss on that group.
2:43Now you're right. Harrison Nevis, not the only reason that the Rams lost.
2:47The block was not all on him and actually tried a couple different methods of getting it back at the group.
2:54They took him off kickoffs and yesterday put him back on kickoffs.
2:57Either way, it was simply not working. So as part duty to improve these special teams unit, which no doubt the Rams
3:04had needed to do, but also in a way to send a message to a team that if you do not perform
3:11on game day, that you are simply not going to be on this team.
3:15The highest of expectations of what follows the Rams.
3:18Some of the reason for the loss was a dramatic block, which again was not Nevis' fault.
3:23He gets he becomes essentially the fall guy and the entire locker room has been put on notice.
3:29Well, it's fine to change out the kicker. They had other special teams issues.
3:33Also, the opening kickoff was returned 70 yards, so they had some coverage issues there.
3:38This has been an ongoing issue for the Rams over the last few years.
3:42Trouble on special teams. They have lost five games in the last two seasons because of special teams gaffes.
3:48Talking to people around the league, one person said to me, when you have a team full of superstars, you are not
3:55allocating resources to maybe a difference maker on your special teams unit.
3:59And that's fine. You can construct your roster that way, but you've got to find another way to emphasize how important special teams is.
4:06Maybe spend more time in practice on it. Spend more time in training camp on it.
4:11But allocate resources somewhere else. You've got to send the signal to the team that it is still an important part of the game.
4:19I go back to Joe DiCamillis, the former special teams coordinator for the Rams when he left the Rams and went to coach in college football.
4:27He said, I wanted to be back someplace where special teams was emphasized.
4:31Certainly the Rams are trying to fix what has bothered them for the last few seasons.
4:36They did bring in a new special teams coordinator.
4:39They did sign two special team specific players this offseason.
4:42Now they are changing out the kicker. What they've got to hope is that they get it right and that by the
4:49time they get it right, it does not cost them more games.
4:52Special teams being a part of the Rams problems right now.
4:56The other thing is you got to come out of the gate stronger during these games.
5:01I mean, they've been better in the second half.
5:04That's the good news. The problem is they've been sluggish in the first half, sort of like they were last night and like they were against the Eagles.
5:12And they're having to rely on these comebacks. And that's going to be the difference.
5:17That fine line between winning and losing. And look, there is a high expectations for this team that they were not only
5:24going to win a lot of games, but they were going to win a lot of games handily because of all the additions.
5:31Aaron Donald joining an already good defense and coming back.
5:34Miles Garrett as well. We'll see him in the near future return.
5:38Plus that guy, Matthew Stafford coming back as MVP with all the firepower they have on offense.
5:43They just haven't looked like that. Now they're still working.
5:46Sean McVay still got to get these guys to understand that despite what the likes of us said coming into the season, it's still about earning it.
5:55It's still about going out and improving. And they have been good.
5:58They just haven't been great. So this is going to be a challenge for him to make sure that he gets them
6:05to understand the difference between good and great. Jeff, don't be working for it.
6:10Yeah, Mike, you mentioned the fine line at the beginning of that, and that goes both ways.
6:15And I think the thing for me, Rhett, at the beginning of this, you mentioned the stat that for Josh Allen, this
6:22is the first overtime win of his career, but it's even deeper than that.
6:26He was 0-7 in overtimes, three of which came in the postseason.
6:30I mean, that is a huge monkey to get off of his back in this situation.
6:35So I think from that aspect of it, it kind of shows Josh Allen that, hey, maybe things can go your way.
6:42The thing that I continue, you see him running here, 121 rushing yards.
6:46That is awesome when we look at it in a vacuum.
6:49But as we know from this Bills team, it has to be more than Josh Allen.
6:54Yes, it is worth recognizing that they needed that blocked kick to get them to this point.
6:59They need to be able to rely on more than Josh Allen.
7:03And it does help that this is the first overtime win that he gets.
7:08It does kind of shift that momentum in his direction.
7:11But it's got to be more than Josh. And right now, it's still all Josh.
7:15And then there was this situation at the end of the game, after the game.
7:20Some words being shared between Alaric Jackson and Bradley Chubb.
7:23Jackson approaches Chubb with a few other players and staff members kind of standing nearby.
7:28Then comes the punch from Jackson. And so now, after all this is caught on tape, Alaric Jackson has officially been suspended
7:35two games for punching Bradley Chubb in that moment there.
7:38So he will miss the Cardinals week six game here against the Rams week six game against the Cardinals here at home.
7:45And then the following week in Vegas against the Raiders.
7:48Lamar Jackson unable to suit up Sunday night. So, Snoop Huntley helped guide the Ravens to a win over the Falcons.
7:54But things are looking good for Jackson to return from the ankle injury this week against the Browns.
8:00And what do they need to do to know Lamar is good to go?
8:04Well, my understanding is they are hopeful that Lamar Jackson is good to go.
8:09Didn't practice at all last week. And I think a lot of us, including me by the way, assumed that he was
8:15pretty far away from being out there. Sounds like he was closer to playing than maybe we had realized.
8:21I do expect Lamar Jackson to be out on the field tomorrow working his way back from what is a relatively odd type of ankle sprain.
8:29You know, we've seen several instances of Lamar Jackson over the last couple of years taking a little bit longer to recover than one might think.
8:37It has been a storyline for him through the last several years.
8:41My understanding is he was extremely diligent inside the facility.
8:44This time he has been working like crazy to get back.
8:48There's a pretty good chance that Lamar is on the field this weekend for the Ravens, Jeff.
8:53When you get big wins like that without your starting quarterback though, I mean it almost feels like it's worth two.
9:00Because you almost go into these games feeling like, okay, if we can play well here, if we can grab a win
9:06here and there until Lamar gets back, you know, so be it.
9:10And this game I think was a huge statement, not merely because they got a win with the backup quarterback, but because
9:17they did it against a team that felt like they had a ton of momentum coming out of their previous week.
9:24The Falcons have looked really good, but for the Ravens to go out there and show what a complete team that they are.
9:31I think that sends a huge message to the rest of the league and it also affords them the ability.
9:37I'm not saying that they're going to, you know, make a decision on Lamar's health based on the available, the success or failures of Huntley.
9:45But you do feel in the back of your mind like, hey, we're going to be okay.
9:50And I think that's important for this Ravens team.
9:53No question. And for the Bears, Caleb Williams has missed the last three games and coming off their actually for their first
10:00loss without it this week to the Packers. Case Keenum and Tyson Baygent have both seen time in Williams' absence.
10:06Mike, how close are we getting to Caleb Williams returning to his position as the starting quarterback here?
10:11Close rep might be downright imminent here. And I reported on Sunday that Caleb Williams is pushing to return to the playing field.
10:19And that might run counter to some memes and some videos and some pictures that some folks had some fun with thinking
10:25that he was a little dramatic with this injury.
10:28But look, it's a three week injury. That's about the time we thought he might come back.
10:34He got that practice in last week, felt good and was really telling the team, I think I can push this even farther and have a realistic shot.
10:42It sounds like they are in agreement with that.
10:45We've got to see how the week goes. We're always going to put that out there when it comes to hamstring injuries
10:52of the sort where something can be tweaked. But I know that there is optimism that Caleb Williams is on the right
10:59track and could be back on the field pumping his fist while running onto the field, not being taken off on a cart.
11:06Okay. Exactly. Enthusiastically. Yeah. And by the way, I think that, you know, we talk about all these other things about the thin line and the recovery window.
11:15You know, this is a team now that's saying we need him back as soon as we can get him.
11:21And Ben Johnson made it clear. Like, it looks like it could be Atlanta or shortly after the problem is shortly after is really shortly after.
11:29It's a quick turnaround when they play the Patriots on Thursday.
11:32So it's not like they're getting the extra week out of it.
11:36But yeah, man, this Bears team, they need them pumping that fist, Mike.
11:40All right. Knee recovery kept Michael Penix out for the first two games of the season.
11:45And after a stellar two game stretch in his return, Penix unable to finish on Sunday night with a rib injury.
11:52But Ian sounds like there is some optimism that this won't keep him from playing again this Sunday versus the Bears.
11:58What more do you know on that front? Yeah.
12:01Michael Penix is considered day to day with that rib injury and go back to the last game.
12:07Remember he was balling. They were in overtime. He thought he was going to be able to come back.
12:12Then there was just a long log way into the sideline.
12:16It tightened up, got cold. He was not able to get out there, which is why Tua Tagovailoa came on and eventually lost the game with that interception.
12:25But the hope immediately afterward from Michael Penix was that he would be out on the field.
12:30It's considered day to day. Test basically confirmed what everyone had thought.
12:34And if he is able to go out there and practice tomorrow, it sounds like there's a pretty good chance that he is able to do.
12:42Expect Michael Penix Jr. To start to be back in the line up and continue the really, really strong play that he has shown since he's been healthy.
12:50Well, the Tampa Bay Bucs got a win on Thursday in Baker Mayfield's absence.
12:55And this week we kind of marked the very short end of that injury timeline for Baker after suffering the thumb injury
13:02back in week three against the Vikings. Mayfield pushing to make his return this Sunday versus the Steelers.
13:07Mike Garofalo, how realistic is Baker's plan to get back on the field?
13:11Yeah. Baker, like Caleb Williams, wants to get back on the field as soon as possible.
13:16Jaden Daniels, throw him in there as well. There was a thought that maybe he could wait another week, but he worked his way back.
13:24So sometimes you can force the issue, talk your way into it.
13:28But at some point the injury is going to speak for itself.
13:32Now, if he's back on the practice field in some capacity this week, I wouldn't be surprised.
13:37But this is on the earlier side of the window that we thought it was going to be three weeks plus potentially for Baker Mayfield to return.
13:45So he's going to have to make some significant progress to convince the Buccaneers that he can be out there this Sunday
13:52against the Steelers instead of Jaden Daniels. We'll keep an eye on it.
13:56But if he's not playing this week, I wouldn't be shocked yet.
14:00Yeah. Yeah. It doesn't feel quite like the Raven situation with Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley where it's like you get that
14:07win and you feel like this has a balanced team.
14:10I think the Bucs are coming out of that saying like, I mean, that's unbelievable.
14:14We just beat the Cowboys. And I think Todd Bowles said it best.
14:18Like when you have a young quarterback, you've got to lean on your ground game.
14:23You're going to live and die by that ground game.
14:26And Bucky Irving basically said, fine, let's do it.
14:29And I think a lot of us need to remember Bucky Irving is a premier running back in the NFL, a top
14:36tier running back who doesn't necessarily get spoken in the same vein as some of the bigger names like Christian McCaffrey and Derrick Henry.
14:43But this is a dude who put this team on his shoulders and said, we're going to win this game.
14:50And you see those numbers right there. If they can keep that going, they're going to be effective.
14:55But I can tell you right now that every team saw exactly what the Bucs did there.
15:00And until they get Baker Mayfield back, they're going to say, we are going to stop Bucky Irving and make the rookie win with his arm.
15:09All right, Jeff, a lot more to come here on this edition of the Insiders.
15:13For some teams, the optimism of a new season has quickly turned to thoughts of next season.
15:19Word around the league on whether next season is even a reality for some coaches.
15:23Plus, Bo Nix and the Broncos scored early in their matchup against the Chargers and then came alive late to hold on
15:30for what was their third win of the season.
15:33And no time to waste with Thursday night football coming down the pipe.
15:37Okay, tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC and streaming on Disney Plus, Dancing with the Stars returns with a first ever
15:44NFL themed night where each couple will recreate an iconic Super Bowl halftime performance.
15:48Right after the conclusion of the Insiders, turn it over to ABC or stream it on Disney Plus.
15:54And then, of course, we're going to the Super Bowl and you can to enter for a chance to win four tickets
16:01to Super Bowl 61 and a three night vacation to Disneyland Resort to watch the Super Bowl champion cavalcade.
16:06Scan the QR code on your screen right now or visit ESPN.com slash SBLXI to learn more.
16:12Speaking of the Super Bowl, we got a Super Bowl matchup for you on Thursday night football.
16:17Broncos and Seahawks. Remember that Super Bowl 48, of course.
16:20And while the Broncos offense not nearly as prolific as it was in that season, they did find a way to win their third of the season.
16:29This last week did score in the first half, which feels like some progress.
16:33Omar Ruiz joining us now live for the Broncos facility there at Denver and kind of getting a sense here for where things go now.
16:41Sean Payton back to calling the plays. Omar, what are the Broncos saying about those continued efforts to get this offense on track?
16:48Yeah, right. Sean Payton, a lot of talk about wanting Bo Nix to let it rip.
16:53He said there is a balance between minimizing risks while also trying to make plays downfield, even when that play appears to
17:00be covered like scrambling until Nix is able to find a throw to make that happen.
17:05As for taking back play calling duties, I asked Sean Payton if it was like riding a bike or if he felt
17:11like he got some rust off against the Chargers on Sunday.
17:15He said a little bit of both, had to get used to a little bit of subtle changes in terminology.
17:21And then he also said this. I wish it was like riding a bike because my memories of riding bikes was always carefree, relaxing.
17:29So I wouldn't use that necessarily. But you do get used to how fast everything goes, especially when you go from college
17:35to the NFL and the clock is much quicker.
17:38It's not easy. It's really not. It's tough. It's, you know, it's a mental battle.
17:43And that's kind of where I find myself, you know, sometimes in a season like this where it's not as good as
17:50you want it to look, but you're winning and you're playing tough teams and you've gotten close against a few more tough teams.
17:57And, you know, there's going to be tough teams down the road.
18:01So it's all about taking it one game at a time.
18:04And at the end of the day, just finding ways to win and then learning from your losses.
18:10As for those big injuries to the Broncos secondary, Riley Moss, who's nursing a ribs injury, was a limited participant in practice for a second straight day.
18:18He missed Sunday's game against the Chargers, of course, as did Patrick Sertan, who did not practice today for the second day
18:25in a row as he continues to nurse an ankle injury.
18:28And Talanoa Hufunga, who also was injured with an ankle injury on Sunday, also did not practice for the second day in a row.
18:36So key injuries to watch, Rhett, as we head into Thursday.
18:39Yeah, and on the Seahawks side, Jackson Smith and Jigba are limited in practice for the second straight day for the Seahawks as well.
18:47Omar, thanks very much. Okay, so once we get past Thursday night, we'll get to London Sunday morning, 930 a.m.
18:53Eastern time. Texans fresh off their first win of the season, going to battle the Jaguars from London.
18:59Again, you can catch live right here on NFL Network and on the ESPN.
19:03Judy, a lot made of D'Amico Ryan's decision to take over play calling on the defensive side for Houston seemed to work
19:10in week five, getting their first win. How do they kind of continue that trend here moving forward against a very good Jacksonville Jaguars offense?
19:18Well, it did seem to work. They held the Titans to three points.
19:22Cam Ward was sacked four times. They were getting a lot of pressure.
19:26They had them in third and long constantly. They just couldn't get anything going on the offense.
19:31So yes, the defense of the Texans certainly looked much more effective than it has in the early games.
19:37Now, of course, the obvious question is, is that a function of D'Amico Ryan's taking over play calling?
19:42Or is it a function of the fact that the Titans have been struggling on offense all season?
19:48We're certainly going to get a much better read on this when they face the Jaguars in London this weekend.
19:54The Jaguars have been very successful so far. They're going to have to get pressure on Trevor Lawrence and disrupt him.
20:01They're going to have to be able to stop the run.
20:04Those are things they had been struggling with early in the season.
20:08We'll see if they can do it against the Jaguars.
20:11Certainly, they have a huge opportunity here if they can disrupt Trevor Lawrence and they have had really good pass rushers, even
20:18though the defense hasn't been playing well. If they can win this game against the Jaguars, they're right back in the mix
20:25in the division despite the 0-4 start. So huge opening here for the Texans and the Jaguars in or a little bit banged up going into this game.
20:33Yeah, I mean the fact that Will Anderson's playing like maybe the best defensive end in the NFL.
20:39It's great for the Houston Texans. Not great for the team that they are facing.
20:44Jacksonville Jaguars not going to have Anton Harrison. They're really, really good and sturdy starting left tackle.
20:49He has been placed on injured reserve earlier today.
20:52My understanding is he is going to have knee surgery when he returns from London when he gets back to the state.
20:59So what's going to happen in this knee surgery is the doctor is going to go in and then decide during the
21:05surgery how long he is going to be out and basically what procedure they're going to do.
21:11If they just trim, my understanding is that it's a meniscus.
21:14So if they just trim the meniscus, then he's out probably a couple weeks, maybe four weeks or so.
21:20If it needs a full repair reconstruction, then he is out months, likely out the rest of the regular season.
21:26So a lot rides on this surgery once he returns from London.
21:30Okay, Ian, thanks very much. Struggles of the season can compound week over week.
21:34Mismanagement in key areas with the game on the line can add to an equation of uneasiness when it comes to job security.
21:42And as the losses pile up, are some teams already considering a reset at head coach?
21:47That is next. This is going to be a battle between the two heavyweights in the West.
21:52JSM makes a man miss. Touchdown! Brock drops back.
21:55Throws! Caught! The lead back! Darnold steps up, throws, and it's caught.
21:58Cooper Cupp dives shy of the line to kick over!
22:01San Francisco improves to 5-0 and now have a stranglehold on the NFC West.
22:06No quarterback better than Brock Purdy in the fourth quarter this season.
22:10Tops at QBR, passing touchdown to interception ratio has not been sacked, has not given the ball away, and a big reason
22:16why the 49ers were able to go eight plays, 43 yards in five minutes of time to let Eddie Pinheiro kick a
22:2344-yard field goal that would serve as the game winner, 32-29.
22:27Seahawks fall, Niners remain undefeated. On the flip side of well-managed end-of-game drives was this in overtime from the Commanders.
22:33Absolutely zero urgency as the clock ran down on second and eight with no timeouts, needing to spike the ball just to
22:40get a field goal opportunity for the win! And the clock simply runs out on the Commanders.
22:45And the frustration, evidence from Dan Quinn and likely everyone inside that Commanders organization.
22:49As you look at their fourth quarter defense this season, at or near the bottom in so many key categories, points per game allowed.
22:57Opponents third down percentage are staying on the field on drives in the fourth quarter.
23:02And now Mike Garofalo back here with us. Mike, that was a tough scene.
23:06Obviously in overtime there for Dan Quinn, Commanders squandered an opportunity to win it over in overtime, look lost, unprepared, the opposite of urgent.
23:13Now Quinn took accountability there. But how does this play out for him inside that building?
23:18We're going to find out and we're going to find out in a hurry because this is a tough game coming up
23:25for them against the 49ers this coming Monday. It is followed by a bye.
23:30And we always look to Thursday night games and bye weeks for potential head coaching changes.
23:35Look, we came into this season and there were a lot of changes on the coaching staff.
23:40The next change after that is usually the head coach.
23:43So we were clear about Dan Quinn needing to have results this upcoming season to continue in 2027 as the coach of the Commanders.
23:50Now the question is, could something happen in season?
23:53And some of those answers inside that locker room were a little bit questionable.
23:58It was like ask DQ and some folks saying no comment with some of the ones that were reported there.
24:04So Dan Quinn's got to get these guys by the bootstraps.
24:07He's got an extra day because of the Monday night game.
24:11But then you got that bye week after and there's a lot of folks, Judy, around the league that are now talking about the potential.
24:18Could this be an opening for a coaching change?
24:21We don't know what the result of the game is going to be.
24:25And if it's, let's say, a close loss, maybe does he hang on?
24:29But if it's a blowout, then some of this drum beats going to get a little bit louder.
24:35All right. Two things from talking to different people around the league.
24:39One is most people seem to think that the original play call was intended to be a pass to the left sideline.
24:45Jaden Daniels decided to do something else. And of course, the most damning part of all of it is that it's clear
24:52that nobody on the offense knew what the game situation was.
24:56And that, of course, goes directly to coaching, not just to Dan Quinn, but to the entire coaching staff.
25:02Somebody needed to be communicating to the offense what the situation was.
25:05Then I talked to another executive who has dealt with a lot of owners, and he said to me, there are some
25:12losses that linger longer in owners' minds than others.
25:15And this is that kind of loss. He said this is the kind of loss that is very, very difficult to come
25:22back from unless you take a team on a deep run.
25:25He said it's really hard for an owner to get past a humiliating loss like that to a division rival.
25:32Keep all of that in mind. Everybody around the league that I have talked to feels bad.
25:37Everybody likes Dan Quinn. They like him. They think he's a great defensive coach.
25:41But this was just something that nobody could understand how this could happen on Dan Quinn's watch.
25:46And they're also not sure that any coach, any coach could survive it.
25:51Okay. More trouble for a potential, more potential trouble for a head coach with Jim Harbaugh and his Chargers.
25:56Now, 0-5 this season, last place in the AFC West.
26:00They're giving the ball away more than any team in the league.
26:03They gave up 13 fourth-quarter points to the Denver Broncos at home on Sunday, leading to their fifth straight loss, 23-17.
26:100-5 on the season. Ian, it's gone real bad.
26:13Real quick here. Any sense that Jim Harbaugh could be in some trouble?
26:17But my understanding is Jim Harbaugh is not in trouble as of right now.
26:21There's nothing imminent. I don't get the sense inside the building that this is something they're weighing or discussing or expecting.
26:28They think this is a talented team. They think this is a team that can win, and they do believe in this
26:34coaching staff, the entirety of the staff, as one that can get things done.
26:39That said, if these struggles continue, if they continue to look like a fully unprepared team, then of course changes would have to be considered.
26:47I just don't get the sense that there's anything being considered right now.
26:51And one of the more interesting parts of this is that Mike McDaniels' offense, which they had such high hopes for, really hasn't delivered at all.
26:59And if that continues to be the case, they do have someone inside the building who has been a really successful offensive coordinator in Adam Gase.
27:07And I know people sort of roll their eyes.
27:10He had, at some point, the highest scoring offense in NFL history.
27:13Pretty good coach. So if they do end up making a move, that would be someone who could step in.
27:19But Mike, they don't seem like they're anywhere close to that inside the Chargers' building.
27:24No, and Jim Harbaugh's had a chance to sort of rally the troops, at least via his press conferences.
27:30And it just doesn't seem like that same fire from Harbaugh, which is why some folks are looking at it and say,
27:37is this a guy that we could be potentially talking about as we get toward the end of the season, into the
27:44end of the season, as a potential coaching change?
27:47I don't know. I mean, Jim Harbaugh, throughout his time as the head coach of the 49ers in DeMichigan, he had that fire.
27:54He had that energy. And that energy seems to have been zapped this year at a time where this team badly needs it.
28:01So can Jim Harbaugh find a way to energize not only himself, but this entire locker room and find a way to
28:08scrape some wins together, Jeff, and get this somehow moving in the right direction?
28:12Because right now they seem listless and so does he.
28:15I think when you look across the coaching landscape, it's always really interesting because the perceptions before the season do kind of
28:22play its part in how we feel now. For instance, Ian saying that, you know, it doesn't feel like Harbaugh is necessarily
28:29in the hot seat based on the people he's talking to.
28:32You look at two guys like Todd Bowles and Aaron Glenn.
28:36They sort of came into the season slightly on the hot seat, at least the very warm seat.
28:41And suddenly though, this is where you kind of have to take pause because as much as it felt like it was
28:48destined for inevitable firings for both of those guys at some point, then they go win two games.
28:54One beats the Browns, one beats the Cowboys. So we are at this weird time of the season when it feels like
29:01you're starting to draw some conclusions and the second you do, it gets flipped on its head.
29:06So I think it's important to be especially patient at this time of year.
29:10But it's pretty crazy when we're looking across the league, seeing backup quarterbacks, we're seeing coaches on the hot seat, and we're really through five games.
29:18And it's incredible how much has already happened. Well, this is very much a week to week league.
29:24And in the case of those two that you just mentioned, Bowles and Aaron Glenn, they both came out with victories.
29:30Their teams looked a lot better. And because of their divisions they're in, they're not that far out of the race.
29:37So if they can piece, especially the Bucs in the NFC South, which is always open, if they can piece together a
29:44few wins here, they are right back in the mix in their division race and certainly potentially in a wild card race.
29:51So hold everything. It's only week five. We'll get to the hot seat later in the season.
29:56Things heating up, certainly in Philadelphia after another Eagles loss.
29:59Good news though, Big Dom says they're going to get things fixed.
30:03How remains the question. Well, getting some key players like Saquon Barkley and Devontae Smith back healthy would be a start.
30:09Updates on that front when we come back. All right, couple of big games in the national spotlight here as we kick
30:16off week six in the Sunday of week six from London.
30:20Texans, Jaguars, AFC South battle live on NFL Network.
30:22We wrap up week six in Santa Clara with the commanders visiting the Niners as they try to stay undefeated Monday night football.
30:308 p.m. Eastern time on ABC ESPN and on the ESPN app.
30:33All right, so the Eagles did not fare well in London, although Jake Elliott kicked a field goal near the end of regulation.
30:41I stress near that put the Eagles up by what?
30:44They left eight seconds on the clock. They kicked to Amir Abdullah.
30:47Amir Abdullah went 53 yards on the return and with one second left on the clock.
30:52Cam Little, big leg from 57, breaking the hearts of the Eagles and sending them back across the Atlantic Ocean with their third loss of the season.
31:01Mike Garofalo back here. Well, look, it would help as the Eagles try to get things back on track to get some of their stars back.
31:09Saquon Barkley, Devontae Smith missed that game in London.
31:12What's the status on their recoveries? They've got a shot.
31:15It sounds like the Eagles are expecting one at least back, if not both, for Devontae Smith and Saquon Barkley.
31:21That is a great indication because these are the two most important offensive weapons available for Jalen Hurts.
31:27Now, just like I told you with Caleb Williams, when we get to these hamstrings, we've got to see because just a little slip here or there.
31:35And all of a sudden the guy tweaks it.
31:38So we've got to see how it goes throughout the week.
31:41But at the very least, the Eagles have some optimism heading into the work week that they are going to get back
31:48some of this huge offensive firepower via Saquon Barkley and or Devontae Smith.
31:52You talk about expectations, Mike. There's no way that we came into the season believing this was a game where we expected
31:59this to be either shootout or exciting. And then the Carolina Panthers started playing some offense.
32:04And, you know, we thought the defense was going to be OK.
32:08They built it up a bunch in the offseason.
32:10That really was the focus. They are. You hope Bryce Young takes a little bit of a step.
32:16But he leaves the NFL in passing. And that is about as big a step as you can get.
32:22And consider the fact Eagles aren't the only ones getting healthy.
32:25Carolina Panthers getting healthy at the receiver position as well.
32:28This is a sneaky, really, really challenging game for the Eagles.
32:32Jaguars were kind of similar. Jaguars are really good.
32:35Stress them on all different sides. The Carolina Panthers are going to do the same.
32:39Can they stop the Bryce Young passing attack? It's a very, very real question now.
32:44Yeah. Bryce Young leading the NFL with 317 passing yards per game this season.
32:48Michael Parsons, torn ACL week 15 last season. Of course, has not played yet this season.
32:53Has not practiced yet as his recovery continues. And will not play against his former team, the Cowboys, which had kind of
33:00been a loose target for Parsons himself to get back from this injury.
33:04And what does Michael Parsons have to do to get back onto the practice field and work his way back into a game situation here for the Packers?
33:13Michael Parsons has to meet the benchmarks that Green Bay Packers doctors have set in order for them to believe that his knee is fully healthy.
33:21Now, it wasn't just an ACL. It was an ACL and a meniscus.
33:25And the Packers are one of the most conservative medical staffs in the NFL.
33:29Obviously, they know about football and care about football.
33:32They care about medical much more. These are all medical decisions for the Green Bay Packers.
33:37The kind of thing that the football side really doesn't influence.
33:41So the doctors don't feel like Michael Parsons is ready.
33:44They really don't care if he's playing the Cowboys this week or whoever next week.
33:48The hope is sooner rather than later. Perhaps next week he'll be practicing.
33:52And they want him when he is on the field, Judy, to be 100 percent and ready.
33:58And just not yet. Well, I think we were all hoping for that reunion.
34:02But what the Cowboys are really hoping for is a better defense.
34:06And to that end, they are bringing in veteran defensive coordinator Mike Pettin to join the staff.
34:11Now, this is being positioned as him being there to be a sounding board for defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
34:17But it's hard to look at this as anything as maybe usurping some of his authority as a defensive coordinator.
34:23The defense has just struggled terribly after they lost the game to the Bucs.
34:28Of course, an undrafted rookie. They ran on them all night long.
34:31Jerry Jones said he felt like the defense was back where it started.
34:35That was a pretty bad indication for where the defense is.
34:39So Mike Pettin is coming in. We will see if that improves the defense.
34:43There is really only one way for it to go at this point.
34:47Okay, Judy, much more to get to as we continue on the insiders.
34:51I won't say not, but could there be something in the air on a future night for the Las Vegas Raiders and
34:58Fernando Mendoza after making his debut last week? That's next.
35:01We'll see you next time. Just wait and see.
35:04This was a 13-7 game at the half. We saw 35 fourth quarter points in this game.
35:09We are going to overtime. Are you ready? This time ball comes out!
35:13His second fumble of the ninth. The winning drive.
35:16They're inside field goal range. And out of SoFi with an overtime win.
35:20Epic finish on Monday night. Bills get their fourth win.
35:23Time for good coverage presented by Progressive Insurance. Josh Allen dominating the Rams with his legs on Monday night rushing for 121 yards and a score.
35:31Allen running for 91 of those 121 yards in the fourth quarter and overtime alone clutch when his team needed it the most.
35:39That ranks second, by the way, by a quarterback in a fourth quarter plus overtime since 2000.
35:44Trailing only Mike Vicks. 94 rushing yards in a game where he helped beat the Giants back in 2010.
35:50All right, Ian. The Bills are staying out west here as they get set to battle the Raiders in Las Vegas.
35:56Raiders got blown out by the Patriots in Foxboro.
35:59We did see Fernando Mendoza make his NFL debut.
36:02Not necessarily because Kirk Cousins was playing poorly. They gave up over 500 yards of offense to the New England Patriots.
36:08But Mendoza played well. Is there any sense that we could be seeing more of Mendoza down the line?
36:14Eventually you hope to see a lot of. Well, yeah, it just doesn't seem like it's in the near future.
36:21And especially, Rhett, you being the proud Indiana alum that you are.
36:24Let's go. Let's go. I know you're the one to push for this question.
36:29Look at how well he played. I know you're the one to push for this topic.
36:34It's fine. You're a homer for our guy, Fernando.
36:36I saw you guys having the bromance when we were in Las Vegas for training camp.
36:41It's all fine. I just don't get the sense, Judy, that it's going to come anytime soon.
36:47And the Las Vegas Raiders, reality is, are good enough right now where they don't need to force anything.
36:53Kirk Cousins is playing well enough where Mendoza can just play when they need him to in short spurts before they eventually
36:59turn it over to him for good. Well, and as Rhett himself just said, Kirk Cousins is not necessarily playing poorly.
37:06And he's really got a chance for a rebound game this week against the Bills, who are winning games and scoring a lot of points.
37:14And Josh Allen puts on the Superman cape. But they're not doing such a great job stopping opposing passers.
37:20And they haven't really since week one. I was at their game against the Texans.
37:24They are getting shredded by opposing passers. They give up a lot of passing yards.
37:29They give up a lot of points. So certainly this is an opportunity for the Raiders and Kirk Cousins to bounce back and maybe keep Fernando Mendoza.
37:37I'm sorry, Rhett, on the bench for a little while longer.
37:41Hey, it's all good. Let's continue looking at another matchup here this week.
37:45Patriots who just got that win over the Raiders getting set to battle the Jets here in week six.
37:51And Drake Bay is starting to play here week four.
37:5437 points per game. QB rating first as well.
37:57Offensive touchdowns most in the league in the last two weeks.
38:00Mike Garofalo. He's doing all of this without A.J.
38:03Brown in the lineup, which could change here soon.
38:06Well, yeah, it can change. But you make that note because when Drake Maye was struggling, we were asking people, what's wrong with Drake Maye?
38:14And they said nothing's wrong with Drake May. He's just making some decisions during the game that aren't the best.
38:20And he's been fine during the week. And hey, don't forget, he's doing this without A.J.
38:25Brown. Well, now that excuse is gone because he's played better without him, which is a great thing because when you add
38:32a really good player back into the mix, you hope not only is Drake May going to continue to play as well as he has.
38:39He may play even better because they built so much around what A.J.
38:43Brown does in this offense and his ability to run with the football after a catch.
38:48So a lot of the quick stuff that they tried to complete here with A.J.
38:53Brown adding more on top of that, that's going to be another element of their offense, Ian, that they didn't have last year.
39:00So the hope is now you've got Drake May on the right path.
39:04Now you've got A.J. Brown healthy potentially this week.
39:07And this offense could get to a new level that we really haven't seen at all since Drake May has taken over.
39:14Yeah, it would be awfully quick for A.J. Brown.
39:17Anything's possible would be a great surprise for the New England Patriots.
39:20Meanwhile, going to play likely for the next couple weeks without a couple of their really, really good players.
39:26Trayvon Henderson, their standout running back dealing with a high ankle sprain, as colleague Adam Schefter reported.
39:32So they have a game this Sunday, then they got the Thursday game.
39:36I would expect him to miss both. That is not great there.
39:39Although Ramondre Stevenson has certainly played well enough. And then tackle Will Campbell, MCL sprain in his knee also week to week.
39:46We'll get at the potential missing both of those games, Judy.
39:50So yes, the Patriots still shorthanded. Well, the loss of Will Campbell is the one to really keep an eye on because
39:57David Bailey, the rookie pass rusher for the New York Jets, absolutely blew up the Cleveland Browns offense last weekend.
40:03He is poised to do it now. Big breakout performance for him.
40:07Three sacks against the Browns, all kinds of pressures, all kinds of quarterback hits.
40:11And Aaron Glenn made the point of saying he's also stopping the run really well, too, which is not something that anybody
40:18is even looking for him to do necessarily. So big breakout performance for David Bailey.
40:22The Patriots are going to have to account for him, especially with Will Campbell out of the game.
40:28Okay. A lot more to get to here on this Tuesday edition of the Insiders.
40:33James Winston and the Giants finding a way to not lose.
40:36It was a tie against the commanders. We'll get into what's next there for the Giants.
40:41Plus some news on a Bears edge rusher out for a couple of weeks.
40:45That's nice. All right. Some news out of Chicago today as the Bears top edge rusher Montez sweat two sacks already this season.
40:53Will now be suspended for two games. Violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.
40:57Bears three and two. They've got to travel to Atlanta this week.
41:01And then week seven will battle the New England Patriots at home.
41:05New York Giants will take on the Saints this week.
41:08And James Winston connecting on 33 of 54 passes for over 300 yards and a trio of touchdowns in a tie.
41:14But considering how things worked out over time feel a lot better about that tie for the New York Giants.
41:21What's working for them right now with James at the helm on offense Judy.
41:25Well what worked for them against the commanders at least in the second half of the game was they went more up tempo.
41:32They were running no huddle. Now this was out of necessity.
41:35The offense was really in a slog in the first half not getting anywhere.
41:40And ever since Jackson Dart went down the Giants have wanted to be a run first team really pound the run.
41:46It just hasn't worked out that way as much as they had hoped.
41:50But what did work out was the up tempo stuff and John Harper in talking to reporters said yesterday they probably need
41:57to do more of that with James. And that means putting the ball in James's hands.
42:02He was spreading the ball around though to Malik neighbors and Isaiah likely that's their two best playmakers right now.
42:08I would expect to see a little bit more up tempo stuff from the Giants going forward.
42:14Well any kind of positive tempo would be good for the Tennessee Titans.
42:18Cam Ward just three touchdowns matched with three interceptions 187 total yards this last week on a loss to the Texans second
42:25time they've been under 200 total yards on offense only team in the league to have that distinction.
42:30Any sense that patience is wearing thin on Cam Ward as a starter there in Tennessee.
42:35Nope nope. Nope. Do I have to say anymore?
42:38No they are sticking by Cam Ward and they believe that his best football is still ahead of him.
42:44And despite the numbers that are not up there anymore but we're up there they feel like there is progress there and they feel like there is momentum.
42:53And at some point there's going to be a breakthrough and at some point it's going to be positive.
42:59Bring those numbers back control room. They are on it right here.
43:02So no still a lot of faith inside that building for Cam Ward and for what's to come.
43:08All right losses continue to mount. Oh and five trying to figure it out are the Tennessee Titans with Cam Ward at the helm.
43:15They will travel to Indianapolis this week to battle cults.
43:18Thank you friends great to be back here with you for another episode of the insiders here right back here tomorrow seven o'clock Eastern time tune in.
