Matthew Golden

PositiveRole0:00

Golden is expected to play significantly more in year two after limited playing time as a rookie due to offensive crowding and coaching rotation; the Packers let two receivers leave, concentrating routes among remaining players.

Insight page
PositiveUsage0:01

Golden's per-route efficiency of 1.53 yards per route run as a rookie is solid and not a flameout; if he doubles his routes while maintaining that efficiency, he becomes a decent fantasy pick.

Insight page
PositiveProjection0:23

One analyst is skeptical about Golden's ability to earn targets despite increased playing time, though acknowledges there is at least some chance he could improve in that area.

Insight page
NegativeProjection0:49

Analyst is anchored to the historical precedent that first-round picks who don't play much as rookies are typically bad, though acknowledges the Packers may be a unique coaching situation.

0:00From like the this guy didn't even play
0:01last year perspective, I I think I'm a
0:03lot more optimistic than you guys are
0:05because I I know why he didn't play to
0:08some extent, which is they they had
0:09Dobbs. They
0:10>> Oh, no, you said you were going to say
0:11something different.
0:12>> No, it's cuz it was really crowded and
0:13the and the coach was rotating everyone
0:15and then he was like, I probably need to
0:16stop doing that and they let two of the
0:18guys leave. So that it's like going to
0:21be more concentrated this year. Like it
0:23as far as the routes go. Targets is a
0:24different thing where you can argue
0:26about is he good enough to earn targets?
0:28And by the way, I kind of think not. But
0:31but you know, that there's at least some
0:34chance. I I'm not worried he's like not
0:36playing much this year. He's clearly
0:38going to play way, way more than he did
0:40last year unless he's a bum and he loses
0:43that playing time over the course of the
0:44season.
0:45>> Yeah, and this is why I like I
0:47ultimately conceded that it's probably
0:48fine that we move him up a little bit
0:50given that it's a matter of us, to your
0:53point, 150 BBMs and see zero of him
0:56versus 150 BBMs and see two or three. Uh
1:00I generally decide on the idea that like
1:03we don't need to treat all these people
1:05with kid gloves. Like, oh, well,
1:07actually, if you count all the yards he
1:08didn't catch, but he almost caught, he
1:09would have had a better season.
1:11>> He was still efficient even with
1:13you know, none of that. 1.53 yards per
1:15route run is not This isn't Jalen
1:17Reagor. This isn't J.J.
1:18Arcega-Whiteside, you know, this isn't a
1:19flameout.
1:20>> guys actually got on the field, so that
1:22would be a big difference.
1:23>> [laughter]
1:27>> Yeah, I mean, I am I
1:30unironic, [snorts] that's fair, that
1:32if he can replicate what he did last
1:34year in terms of his per route
1:36efficiency and he just like doubles his
1:39routes, truly like decent pick. Cuz to
1:41your point, like as a rookie, 1.5 yards
1:43per route run is perfectly fine.
1:45>> Yeah, it's not good. It's not It's not
1:46bad.
1:46>> It's not good. It's not bad.
1:49>> Yeah, I think the big issue for me is
1:51that when and and the Packers might be a
1:54unique scenario that I'm just not like
1:57willing like my spreadsheet brain isn't
1:59willing to be like actually outliers
2:00exist. The Packers might be so wildly
2:02unique in their coaching that they're
2:04the one team that if you don't play at
2:06all as a rookie, it's actually fine.
2:07It's okay. But historically, if you
2:10don't play very much as a rookie and
2:12you're a first-round pick, it means you
2:13are bad. And so I'm very much anchored
2:16to that. The Packers are very much a
2:17unique situation and I'm just like
2:19stubbornly not willing to count that as
2:21much as you.
