Jaylen Waddle

PositiveUsage1:43

Jaylen Waddle is expected to see improved usage under Sean Payton, specifically targeting a return to his typical intermediate route involvement. Waddle's intermediate target rate has plummeted to 15% over the last two weeks, significantly below his career rate of 30% and his 37% rate over the last two years, largely due to facing defenses like the 49ers and Rams that prioritize taking away the middle of the field.

0:00Shawn Payeyton is calling plays again.
0:03Uh, you know, I feel like some of the
0:05takes are like, "Oh, real surprising."
0:08And you know what? It's not surprising.
0:09But is it also bad? I don't think it's
0:13bad. I'm happy to see it. You can't tell
0:16me that Shawn Payeyton calling plays is
0:18worse than Davis Webb calling plays. I
0:20won't believe it. It's It's I I've seen
0:23Davis Webb call plays. I'm not into it.
0:26The Chargers are a massive runfunnel.
0:28teams have a 53% pass rate against them,
0:31minus 6% pass rate of expected, 5% shift
0:33to the run. Uh Seahawks just posted a
0:3647% pass rate against them. Bills were
0:38at 51%.
0:40I think Webb would have gotten in his
0:41own way here and gone too runheavy. I
0:44think what you actually want to do is be
0:47balanced against the if you're the
0:49Broncos, you know, be balanced against
0:52the Chargers and try to get your pass
0:54game going here. My hope here is that
0:57with Shawn Payeyton taking back play
0:58calling duties, we do get more volume
1:01and we get some efficiency and we get
1:03more of a Jaylen Waddentric approach
1:05where we've seen Wadd have pretty good
1:07target rates in a in a few games but
1:09only the one good game back in week two
1:11against the Jaguars.
1:13>> Yeah, I'm in on Wadd in this spot
1:14anyways. I'm a little extra because of
1:17the the change to Shawn Peyton because I
1:18I feel like they still want to get him
1:20the football. Obviously, they should
1:22want to, but when you look at what's
1:24happened to Wadd this season and
1:26especially these last two weeks since
1:27the Jaguars game is uh right now, uh
1:30he's getting no intermediate targets.
1:32Only 15% of his targets have come in the
1:34intermediate area, that 10 to 19 yard
1:36area. That's like where he's lived,
1:37right? Like these crossing routes, these
1:38digs, these slants. His career rate is
1:4030%. The last two years he's been at 37%
1:4337%. So, it's like way below half of his
1:46typical usage. uh has a career-high rate
1:49of targets at the line of scrimmage,
1:50which we knew we were going to get those
1:51in the Broncos offense, which we were
1:52actually excited about those, like just
1:54peppered in. We just wanted the marriage
1:56of the two. But this lines up, I think,
1:58with the last two weeks. So, the last
2:00two weeks they face the 49ers and Rams,
2:02who are two teams that just against
2:04everyone, like their defense is
2:06predicated on just taking away middle of
2:08the field throws. It's like this new
2:09like um almost like a defensive meta
2:12that we're seeing shift to like offenses
2:14now wanting to throw shorter and over
2:16the middle of the field that we've now
2:18seen these defenses start to like really
2:19kind of hone in on us and like the 49ers
2:21are like this and we'll I guess I'll get
2:23into I'll save it for the 49ers when we
2:24do the darn stuff but both the so just
2:26to give you some of the numbers 49ers
2:28number five in the NFL in rate of throws
2:30between the numbers faced Rams number
2:32nine Chargers 31st
2:34so this was a spot I was already kind of
2:36saying like the dynamics change here
2:38teams are throwing over the middle of
2:40the field in between the numbers to the
2:41Chargers. We could see Wadd get some of
2:44this stuff back now that they lost after
2:46the Jaguars game. So, I was already a
2:49little more optimistic on the usage for
2:51him in this game. Now, take a step of
2:53faith. You have to throw those.
