Insight page

J.K. Dobbins

NegativeUsage33:57

Sean Payton wants to see the Broncos commit more to the run game, specifically mentioning J.K. Dobbins and the running back crew. The team only had 15 rushing attempts in the opener, partly due to playing from behind, but the goal is to increase that volume.

Insight page

Insight page

Jalen Hurts

NegativeInjury13:56

Joe Burrow is expected to play against Houston despite dealing with back tightness. He was limited earlier in the week but increased his throwing volume, and the team is making plans for him to start.

Insight page

Jordan Love

NegativeProjection48:41

Jordan Love faces a challenging matchup against the Jets' blitz-heavy defense, which ranks second in the league in blitz frequency; Love has struggled historically against Aaron Glenn-led defenses, holding a 1-3 record.

Insight page

Josh Allen

PositiveProjection20:25

Josh Allen is off to a statistically dominant start, recording nine passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and zero turnovers through two games. He is being compared to MVP-level seasons from Patrick Mahomes and Peyton Manning.

Insight page

Justin Jefferson

PositiveProjection35:46

Justin Jefferson has been highly productive with Carson Wentz, dating back to last season. He recorded two touchdowns in the opener against Green Bay, matching his season-high from last year. Wentz has explicitly stated his intent to force-feed Jefferson in one-on-one situations.

Insight page

Keon Coleman

PositiveBreakout25:06

Keon Coleman stepped up significantly after DJ Moore left the game, showing intelligence and versatility by playing in personnel groupings outside his usual role. Josh Allen demonstrated trust in him by targeting him on a crucial third-and-seven late in the game.

Insight page

NegativeInjury12:18

Kyler Murray has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bears as he remains in the NFL's concussion protocol. While he was able to practice in a limited capacity, he did not receive full clearance.

Insight page

Patrick Mahomes

Insight page

Terry McLaurin

PositiveUsage27:25

Despite finishing with only 14 yards in the opener, the Commanders are actively changing their game plan to get McLaurin more involved against Dallas. Jeremy Fowler notes that McLaurin was dominant in camp and the team intends to scheme ways to get him open, though they will not force the ball if the defense takes him away.

Insight page

Tua Tagovailoa

NegativeInjury15:40

Tua Tagovailoa is doubtful for the upcoming game due to an oblique injury.

1:10On today's show, we have a source very close to Aaron Donald who has his plans for Monday Night Football.
1:17It will be Carson Wentz starting for the Minnesota Vikings against the Bears.
1:21And a night to remember in Buffalo for the Bills.
1:24We recap that all today on the Insiders, which starts right now.
1:28Hey everybody, welcome to the Insiders. Patrick Claiborne here in the NFL LA Newsroom.
1:32Joined by Ian Rappaport, Jeremy Fowler, Judy Batista Batista, and Lindsey Theory there with the Rams, which is where we start with what is new today.
1:41Coming into the NFL LA Newsroom after an off-season of questioning whether or not Aaron Donald will return to play.
1:47He comes back to the team. Then the question becomes, when will he play?
1:51Well, Aaron Donald asked about his plans for Monday night against the Giants today.
1:56Feeling good. Feeling good. Back-to-back days this week. So, feeling like myself.
2:00So, you know, been a great week. Are you going to play Monday?
2:04That's the plan. So, two practices today, have another practice tomorrow, and then we'll see.
2:08But feeling good. You know, coming back with Miles there was going to alleviate you being double and triple-team.
2:14You think they're going to double and triple-team not playing for two years?
2:19They ain't worried about me, man. They don't need to be worried about me.
2:23They don't need to worry about me at all.
2:26No, man. They don't got to worry about me.
2:29How would him out, and if you play, are you expecting to see that?
2:33Whatever happens, I'm just going to go out there and play my game and just try to do what I can do.
2:40Right? You can't... I don't know what they're going to do out there.
2:44I don't know what I'm going to get. All I can know is I got a game plan.
2:50Go out there, execute it, and just, you know, try to play ball.
2:54That's it. So, Lindsay, after waiting for months, we get it straight there from the man himself.
2:59Just on a random Friday, Aaron Donald has plans to play on Monday.
3:04Absolutely, Patrick. And Aaron Donald, as you saw there, was as upbeat, chatty, and eager as I've seen really in like 10 years covering him.
3:12You said it. He says he plans to play Monday.
3:15Really, that stems from how he's felt at practice.
3:18Now, it's been really interesting to watch his practice progress.
3:21You know, he started in the back of the line when he first came out of retirement.
3:26Now, he's inched his way up going through individual drills, but it's really the 11-on-11 work that has been the most important.
3:33He's had back-to-back days now in that 11-on-11 work, and that's really the final determinant, how his body feels coming out of
3:40that, whether he will play on Monday. Now, I mentioned it, but he appears very eager to get back out there.
3:47That's despite, obviously, not having Miles Garrett available. I did ask Aaron Donald about Miles Garrett since he suffered that injury being
3:54placed on injured reserve and will be out at least four weeks.
3:58Donald looked at me and goes, my reaction? Ah!
4:00Patrick, I can't repeat that next word on the air, but that's what he said.
4:05But he did remind all of us that Miles Garrett is not going to be out forever.
4:11I have a couple guesses on what that word might be.
4:14We'll leave it to after the show. As far as the Los Angeles Rams, obviously a significant, significant day with Aaron Donald
4:21saying that he is going to be out there, plans to be out there on Monday.
4:26But this really is just the start of things for the Rams.
4:30He's going to go out there, going to get his feet wet.
4:34We'll see how many snaps Aaron Donald is able to play.
4:37Is it really just a handful? Or when he gets out there, is he going to want to play more and more?
4:44My sense is he'll probably want to play as many snaps as humanly possible.
4:49The reason I say this is just the beginning.
4:51One, he, as you mentioned, does not have Miles Garrett because Garrett is on IR for four games.
4:57Also, he has not played for two years. So the Aaron Donald Judy that you're going to see Monday is not going
5:04to be the Donald that you're going to see week 16, 17, 18.
5:08He's a work in progress. They did not do this for week two.
5:12They did this for January and into February. And that is something we should all think about while we are watching this unbelievable comeback Monday.
5:20Well, the New York Giants do get Aaron Donald in week two.
5:24And I wouldn't say they're going to listen to the idea of that.
5:28Don't double team him. Don't worry about it. But I also wouldn't say that they are intimidated by this prospect.
5:35Cam Scadaboo, the running back, talked about he hasn't played in two years.
5:39He hasn't practiced a lot. He's still got to play football.
5:42And Cam Scadaboo said, if I have to meet him in the hole on third and one, so be it.
5:49I've got to get a yard. As a matter of fact, I would say he, Jackson Dart, other players talked about, listen, they look up to Aaron Donald.
5:57He's an all time great. CeCe Maranoa, the right guard talked about.
6:01He used to study film of Aaron Donald to watch his hand placement.
6:05So they are very much looking forward to facing him.
6:08They are not intimidated by him. There is a lot of confidence, a lot more confidence than we've seen in recent years
6:15in the way the offensive line is playing. They stood up well to the Dallas Cowboys last week.
6:21The New York Giants go out onto the field now believing they can beat any team and they're feeling good as they get ready to face the Rams.
6:30Lindsay and Judy, it might be bad timing for the Giants coming off their win to come out to L.A.
6:36and face this Rams team because it's a very inspired group.
6:40They are so tired of hearing about the debacle in Australia.
6:43All of these guys saying, you know, originally this schedule looked like we'd have some rest going into this game instead.
6:50All that happened is that we've had a bad taste festering in our mouths.
6:54Matthew Stafford said it. Devante Adams said it. So this team's really looking forward to totally turning the page, putting one foot in front of the next.
7:03And there's been a renewed focus at practice this week as they try to move on from that game.
7:09And as they do try to move on, there's a big question in the air.
7:14Receiver Puka Nakua was out of practice today, did not practice because of a hip issue.
7:19So that's certainly a situation to monitor going into Monday night football.
7:23A lot to look forward to coming up on Monday night.
7:26Hopefully Puka Nakua will get back out there on the field.
7:30But thank you to Lindsay Theory for her work today in with the hills.
7:34We will get to some other updates, especially starting with those quarterbacks.
7:38First up, Kyler Murray ruled out for Sunday against the Bears.
7:41Carson Wentz is going to start. Ian, what's the status on Kyler Murray?
7:46Well, Kyler Murray remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, was limited all week, was able to get out there and practice, which
7:53is a good sign for the following week, but was not able to get to full participation.
7:58Obviously not going to be cleared by the independent neurologist and the way every player recovers is different.
8:04So while the hope is that he is out there the following week, you simply don't know, which means Carson Wentz gets to start.
8:11Wentz had an up and down performance, but when it mattered was really, really good, especially in the fourth quarter.
8:18So at least he has the opportunity to go out there and have some success.
8:22It is certainly a tall order to go face Dennis Allen and the Bears defense.
8:27It's going to be pretty angry after last week, but Wentz will be out there hoping that he can do what he did in the fourth quarter.
8:36Ian, Joe Burrow is determined to stay on the field after missing 16 games the previous three seasons, and it looks like that will be the case again.
8:45He will be on the field. That's the plan.
8:47Zach Taylor, head coach said that Burrow threw the ball well today.
8:51It's feeling better. He had a ramp up period all week with that back tightness, was limited earlier in the week, throwing the ball more today.
8:59So barring something unforeseen, it appears that the Bengals are making plans for Burrow to play.
9:04Back tightness is not something that's serious, but it is something to monitor how much can he handle, especially against a Houston
9:11pass rush that is going to be ornery after losing last week.
9:15So they are ready to go. Burrow is trying to get their second straight win.
9:20The Bengals really want to get off to a hot start.
9:24They've struggled with that in the past. For the Atlanta Falcons, Cooper Rush, their former QB3.
9:29He starts again somehow, some way third string quarterback starting in the second game of the season for the Falcons.
9:35That's been about the way it goes, though. Rush did acquit himself fine last week.
9:40As far as why he is starting, first of all, you have Tua Tugger at the low and not going to play doubtful with an oblique injury.
9:48And then you have Michael Penix Jr., who they would love to be the starting quarterback as soon as he is able
9:55to get out there, is confident enough to get out there on that reconstructed ACL.
10:00The hope is sooner rather than later for Michael Penix Jr., but until he feels like he can go, it is going
10:07to be rush starting for the Falcons. Ian, at least we know who the man is in Seattle, who the bonafide starter, that's Sam Darnold.
10:15Now, he's expected to be out. Sources there are telling me it's probably a few more weeks.
10:20They're hoping for better, but it looks like a four-week injury overall from September 9th.
10:25He's already feeling better. That's the good news. The people I talked to in Seattle this week brought up unprompted Drew Locke
10:32and how he's ready for this moment. They feel like with a full week of practice reps, he's really going to respond.
10:39He's taken to this offense. He's impressed the coaches since he signed there over a year ago.
10:44So they feel like they're in good hands in the short term.
10:48You're also going to see more Jadarian Price at running back.
10:52He's going to ride the hot hand there. But they feel like Locke not only can handle the offense, but throws a good deep ball.
11:00So they're going to want to try to stretch the field this weekend.
11:04So that wraps up our quarterback injury update. Here's some notable past catchers.
11:08Nico Collins has been ruled out for the game on Sunday, coming off of career highs for both Zay Flowers and Chris Holave.
11:15Zay Flowers is doubtful for the game for the Baltimore Ravens against the Saints.
11:20Questionable for Chris Holave. Also questionable, Ladd McConkie and Michael Pittman Jr.
11:23And doubtful for Brock Bowers 10 days after he had knee surgery.
11:27Coming up here on the Insiders, things have gone exactly as planned for Joe Brady and the Buffalo Bills.
11:33Not so much for Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos.
11:36We'll get a chance to look at both of those teams when we come back here on this edition of the Insiders.
11:43Saturday, it's the SEC all day on ABC kicking off at noon Eastern with number two Georgia at Arkansas, followed up by
11:50Florida State at number 10 Alabama at 3.30 p.m.
11:53Eastern. The nightcap at 7.30 Eastern. Lane Kiffin and number seven LSU return to Oxford to take on number eight Ole Miss
12:00in one that you surely don't want to miss.
12:03Ole Miss Jackson, Dart and Cam Scadaboo travel west as the New York Giants face off against Matthew Stafford and the Rams at SoFi Stadium.
12:11Don't miss Monday Night Football Monday 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC, ESPN, ESPN Deportes and the ESPN app.
12:17And also check out Peyton and Eli on ESPN2, also streaming on the ESPN app.
12:21Back at some Thursday Night Football New Highmark Stadium opening.
12:25A beautiful night in Buffalo as Josh Allen and the Bills in action against the Detroit Lions.
12:30These two teams went 48 to 42 in Detroit last time they faced off first quarter.
12:35It's a familiar sight. Josh Allen with another rushing touchdown.
12:38It's 82nd in his career later on. Third and 11.
12:41Second drive for the Bills. Second touchdown for the Bills as Josh Allen hits a wide open Josh Palmer for a 43-yard score on the busted coverage.
12:50Later on, they're up 10 in the third quarter.
12:53Josh rolling to his right and he's just going to keep going that way.
12:57Touchdown Josh Allen. They win 41 to 31. He finished with three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns to continue a great start statistically for Josh Allen.
13:06And congratulations going out to the greatest start for a new head coach in Buffalo Bills history.
13:11As it's the first coach in franchise history to win his first two games and it's all about continuing his learning opportunities.
13:18I'm learning our offense defense specialties. I'm learning how to communicate to the guys at halftime in terms of, you know, sometimes
13:25they need me to not say much. Sometimes they need me to get on them.
13:30And I think that that helps form the identity.
13:33But as much as I can continue just passing it on to, hey, Bradley Tubb, Josh Allen and make it a player-led
13:40team where they're speaking my message, it kind of makes everybody's life a lot easier.
13:45But, you know, I got to, we're finding ways to win football games and that's the most important thing.
13:51We're going to find some comps to start your season as a quarterback.
13:55What about 2018 MVP Patrick Mahomes and 2013 MVP Peyton Manning who go on to throw 55 touchdown passes after Josh Allen
14:02started the game, started the season with nine pass touchdowns and a rush touchdown and no turnovers.
14:07What a start for him. Where Judy Batista, we've been talking about continuity with Joe Brady.
14:12It feels like something even more than that through two games.
14:16It really does. You know, you talk to teams before each game and in talking to the Bills before week one, all
14:23we heard was they wanted that vertical attack, keep their foot on the gas, the aggressiveness.
14:28And they did that. They were getting big chunk plays against the Houston Texans of all defenses.
14:33And then going into week two, it's the short week.
14:36They really wanted to get the running game established, get James Cook going.
14:40Well, they did that more than 200 yards on the ground.
14:44So they are basically able to call their shot on offense.
14:47Now, everything they want to do, they're able to do at will on offense.
14:52But I thought the most important moment last night was when DJ Moore went out when he landed hard on that left shoulder.
14:59He's out of the game and you think, oh, is this going to be the speed bump that slows this offense down?
15:06And it did not slow the offense down. Keon Coleman, who's been up and down in his first two seasons in the league, really stepped forward.
15:14Joe Brady talked about it after the game. He was taking on plays that were not his place.
15:20He was in personnel groupings that were not his usual personnel groupings.
15:24He had to step up. Joe Brady talked about how intelligent Keon Coleman is, but it also shows you how deep this Bills offense is going right now.
15:33Josh Allen has a great deal of trust in these players.
15:36He went to Keon Coleman on a third and seven late in the game when the Lions had closed the gap to just 10 points.
15:44That basically shut the door on the Lions' faint hopes of coming back.
15:48They are rolling deep and really effective on the Buffalo Bills offense right now.
15:53Yeah, and Brandon being the general manager resisted any urge to trade Keon Coleman even when the fans were basically calling for
16:00it, knowing that there is a good player in there somewhere was on display last night.
16:05As far as the other side of things for the Detroit Lions, obviously not as good.
16:10And Calvin Shepard, the defensive coordinator, one of the bright young defensive coordinators in the NFL, certainly in the spotlight a little
16:17bit just based on what the Buffalo Bills did.
16:20Here is my sense. Not a lot of panic in Detroit.
16:23Yes, they need to get things fixed, need to take a couple extra days and figure out which direction this defense is going to go.
16:31But there is a thought that the Buffalo Bills are really good and Josh Allen is really good.
16:37And they are going to do this probably to a lot of people.
16:41The one thing I would wonder about is does Brad Holmes, the general manager, feel obligated to go get a player?
16:47Joey Porter Jr. would be the one who would make sense if he's even available by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
16:54Patrick, the price would be heavy if the Lions wanted to do it.
16:58But if they wanted to add to their secondary, there's not a ton of avenues to do it.
17:03That at least would be one to point out.
17:06Yeah, it feels like a long wait until they could possibly get back with the best safety combo in the league with Kirby Joseph and Brian Branch.
17:15We will go to our next primetime game that's coming up here where we'll all be gathered together to watch one game.
17:22And that is the Colts and the Chiefs. The Chiefs number one pick, their first round pick.
17:27Mansour Delane got a pick on his first drive, but it wound up being the end of his game as he is
17:34questionable for Sunday night with that shoulder injury. Let's look to the other teams.
17:39Judy, the Colts defense saw Derrick Henry go for 144 yards and three touchdowns.
17:43And to bounce back from that, they have to go up against Kenneth Walker after the great debut that he had running for the Chiefs.
17:51This new look Chiefs running offense. Yeah, the Colts defense gave up more than 500 yards of offense to the Baltimore Ravens.
17:58Part of the problem was if you watch back that game, you could see they were having trouble communicating.
18:04They were having trouble lining up. DeForest Buckner said they couldn't get aligned correctly.
18:08Cam Bynum, the safety, had the green dot. He was the defensive play caller in that game.
18:14That's kind of unusual. Most teams use linebackers because they are literally in the middle of the defense.
18:19For the deep safety, he had to come all the way up.
18:23It just wasn't working. They were running out of time.
18:26So they are going to change who has the green dot.
18:30It's going to be Akeem Davis Gaither, a linebacker this week.
18:33And they are hoping that that will help some of the communication issues and able to get the defensive play calls in and get everybody lined up correctly.
18:42You could see when they were struggling to get lined up, Lamar Jackson would see it and then call for the ball right away.
18:50You know that Patrick Mahomes' eyes would get really wide if he saw the Colts struggling like that again.
18:56So they are hoping that this change in the defensive play caller will clean things up.
19:01Now, you know Mahomes is going to be looking for that.
19:04There's a good reason that our good friend Kyle Brand says week one is a liar.
19:10It's because things like this, the teams really are figuring it out in real time.
19:14Just like the Kansas City Chiefs offense. And obviously there was a lot of hoopla.
19:19I contributed to Patrick Mahomes coming back and making that dramatic return from an ACL and an LCL tear.
19:25The reality is this is going to be a little bit of a work in progress.
19:30But what we saw was exactly what the Chiefs hoped, right?
19:34They were pretty physical. They were able to run the ball at will and Mahomes was able to get out there and feel like himself.
19:42The problem is he's not quite going to be himself for a little bit of time.
19:47Yes, it's amazing that Mahomes was out there. It's amazing at the quickness and speed that he was able to play.
19:53But it might take him several more weeks to get back to playing like his old self.
19:59You just got to hope the defense and the run game can hold them up, Patrick, as Mahomes gets his legs under him.
20:06Yeah, you'll have to do it against the Colts defense that, as Judy said, had a lot of problems with Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.
20:14The Ravens will be at home to take on the Saints as we look at what Lamar has been able to accomplish back in week one.
20:2240 points, 300 more passing yards, 200 more rushing yards.
20:26The Ravens did it in 2026. They also did it in 2019.
20:29The problem is after Baltimore had eight different receivers catch the ball, they may need some help at receiver.
20:35As we look at the injury report for the Saints and the Baltimore Ravens, Zay Flowers is doubtful with that hamstring.
20:42Also in bold there, Trey Hendrickson questionable for the game as he came over as an edge rusher from the Cincinnati Bengals.
20:49Also questionable Chris Olave, who again had a career game in the opener against the Lions.
20:54More to come here on the Insiders. The NFC East had two teams suffer division losses in week one.
21:00Now both the Commanders and the Cowboys in a battle to avoid 0-2.
21:04The things they're changing to avoid that 0-2 outcome when we come back on the Insiders.

24:52Back on the inside, our Sunday is game day on NFL Network.
24:56Get set for a full day of football with game day morning.
24:59Follow along with that day of football on game day live and relive the best moments of the day on game day
25:06highlights and game day final, all starting with game day morning at 9 a.m.
25:11Eastern, where you will see Hunter Lipke and new Broncos linebacker Von Miller talk about their non-traditional exchange for his jersey.
25:17Number 40 is important for me because that's what I wore.
25:21I wore that in high school. I wore that in college.
25:24I won a Super Bowl at number 40. Coming to the Dallas Cowboys, Hunter was number 40.
25:30A couple hours after he signed, he said, Hey, bro, I'm here to be a great teammate and win a championship.
25:36What do you think about, you know, the number 40?
25:40I didn't just want to, you know, deball him for the number.
25:43I wanted to, you know, come up, you know, with a deal that was beneficial for us both.
25:49Everybody's been joking around with me, like probably the first time that a jersey's been swished over chicken before, but here we are.
25:56Von and that Cowboys front might need to help the back end.
26:00The Giants had three touchdowns where the receiver was wide open, five or more yards of separation.
26:06That total halfway to the season total for what was a bad defense last year.
26:10Brian Schottenheimer and Dan Quinn ahead of the game on Sunday.
26:14When it comes to the green dot, will Mr.
26:17Barham be starting on Sunday? Yeah, he'll be the green dot for us.
26:21And again, he's got great command of what we're doing.
26:24Again, had to get into a little teaching moment this morning on the radio.
26:28Again, the green dot I think gets overblown at times.
26:32And again, basically what you're doing, you're repeating the call.
26:35And then you're setting fronts and all that. And then the entire defense needs to communicate.
26:40So, but Jay Sean's done a great job. As you guys know, we do have multiple guys that can wear it.
26:47But Jay Sean should be the one that starts out with it.
26:50With Jaden, what didn't you see on Sunday against the Eagles from Jaden that maybe you want to see against the Cowboys?
26:57Honestly, I saw a lot from what I've seen in the camp part of things.
27:02I saw like a very good decision-making process. Remaining a passer and the scrambles.
27:06You know, deciding when some throwaways were the appropriate time.
27:10I'm very much, I wouldn't say this, I didn't see this.
27:13I'm very much looking forward to seeing him in a lot of clutch moments ahead.
27:18He has such confidence in that space with the system, with the guys.
27:22And so I'm very much looking forward to seeing that.
27:25That's right for Jeremy Fowler now. Jeremy, Terry McLaurin ran the most routes on the entire team, but he finished with 14 yards in the opener.
27:33What do the commanders change against Dallas? Well, they changed their plan to get him more involved.
27:39They clearly want to do that from all that I'm hearing.
27:42They won't force the ball. Jaden Daniels famously likes to go to the open man.
27:47He's going to follow the game plan of the defense.
27:50And last week, Philadelphia tried to take Terry McLaurin away.
27:53But I was at Washington camp. He was dominant, best player in the field when I was there.
27:59And I was told that really continued throughout camp where he's had one of his best.
28:04So they do want to rely on him. They're going to try to scheme up ways to get him open.
28:11And then with Dallas on the other side, they know they have to tighten up on third down.
28:169 of 11 on third down. So I don't expect sweeping changes this early after one week on the defense.
28:23But they know that they have to just tighten up.
28:26So there's a feeling there that Dallas is a pressure cooker.
28:29They're not used to losing to the Giants like they did last week.
28:33So there's some tension over there right now that they're trying to sort through.
28:38Now, tension is a daily occurrence there in Dallas.
28:41They know the spotlight that is on them. And in part because of what the New York Giants did to them.
28:47And I want to talk about the Cowboys offense because there's been a lot of discussion about just how explosive this offense
28:54is with Dak Prescott running the show and all the weapons that they have.
28:59Receivers with Pickens and Lamb and running backs and Javante.
29:02I mean, really just up and down the line.
29:05Talent all over the place. Offensive lines a little banged up early on this season, but still really, really effective.
29:11And they just weren't the home run hitting, highly efficient offensive machine that we all expected.
29:16If the Cowboys are going to get to where they should be this season, which is competing for a playoff spot and
29:23then into the playoffs, this offense needs to take some of the responsibility here.
29:28And I would expect a bounce back performance from Dak Prescott and friends on Sunday.
29:32In front of the home crowd at AT&T Stadium, we're 266 miles away.
29:36The Houston Texans will have their second straight home game to start the season against another pretty good AFC quarterback.
29:43But how healthy is he? Joe Burrow dealt with back tightness in practice this week, said he'd be ridiculous for him to miss Sunday's game.
29:51But the Bengals have listed him as questionable. Upward, Nico Collins.
29:54We saw he was ruled out Sunday for the game.
29:57What can you tell us about his hamstring injury because he's had these in the past?
30:02He certainly has had several of these nagging injuries.
30:05Heard it this week in practice. Did not practice the last two, the past two days.
30:10So officially ruled out. Does not seem to be to be a major, major injury.
30:15Obviously, hamstrings can be tricky, so they're not going to want to rush him back.
30:20But at least minor is better than the alternative.
30:23So what this means for the Houston Texans is they're going to have to rely on some of their depth.
30:29Jalen Noel is certainly a name to watch. They're really talented, would not be surprised if he's more involved.
30:35And then Kayshawn Booty, the former Patriots receiver who played in the same system in New England who they traded for this
30:42offseason right actually around time of cut down day.
30:45I would expect Kayshawn Booty to be front and center this week.
30:49And if he's anything close to the player Texans believe that they traded for, we're probably going to see a lot of him from CJ Stroud.
30:57Yeah, with a defense on the other side probably hungry to bounce back after Josh Allen.
31:02The Bills were all over them in the start of their 2026 season.
31:06Let's stay in the AFC South where the Jacksonville Jaguars had a vastly different start than the Denver Broncos.
31:12The Jags able to rest some starters for a big part of the second half against the Browns.
31:18Meanwhile, the Broncos offense struggled in Kansas City on Monday night.
31:21We heard from Sean Payton all week with regards to the defense.
31:25But, Judy, over on the other side, you have Davis Webb making his play calling debut against Steve Spagnuolo on the road
31:32in a season opener with arguably one of the best play callers of his generation as his head coach just watching on.
31:39It has to be a difficult situation. Well, you wonder how difficult it is and maybe how difficult it could get if
31:46things don't go much better for the Denver Broncos offense.
31:49You mentioned things didn't go well for the Denver Broncos in any way.
31:53They weren't good on defense either. But on offense, they really sputtered.
31:57They never got things going. Bo Nix struggled. They didn't really commit to the run.
32:02They were way out of whack on their pass run balance.
32:06It just didn't go right. Now, Sean Payton has defended Davis Webb.
32:09He said there's a lot of dirt on everybody's hands, including his own, meaning Sean Payton's own hands.
32:15So he is sticking with Davis Webb. He is the one after all who decided to turn the play calling over to Davis Webb.
32:23But you do have to wonder if things don't get better against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
32:27And worth noting, the Jaguars were the team, the only team that beat the Broncos at home last season in the regular season.
32:35If things don't look better from an offensive standpoint against the Jaguars, you do wonder how long Sean Payton will remain patient
32:42with Davis Webb and with the offense. You know he doesn't want to make a change.
32:47It's been only one week. Things could turn around after one week quite easily.
32:51We will see how it goes. But certainly this is something to keep an eye on.
32:56This was one of the biggest changes made in the offseason in Germany.
33:00It certainly didn't get off to the best start.
33:03Yeah, Judy, no doubt about that. My sense is Sean Payton wants to see the big picture here.
33:09To your point, he knows it's only one game.
33:12He knows Davis Webb is an ascending young coach who was on the head coaching trail last year doing several interviews and acquitted himself well.
33:20So they want to give him a chance here.
33:23Sean Payton, not the most patient man, but wants to be as patient as he possibly can here.
33:28And my understanding is part of why Payton relinquished play calling duties is because he had called it for so long.
33:35We're looking at 25 plus years. He wanted to see the game from a different vantage point.
33:40He knew that it was time, but he does want to see Denver run the ball better and commit to that a little bit more.
33:48They got away from it last week. Just 15 rushing attempts.
33:52Part of that was they were playing from behind, but he wants to see J.K.
33:57Dobbins and that crew get going a little bit more, although they could be without R.J.
34:02Harvey, who is questionable with a hamstring injury, not looking great for him right now.
34:06And for Coach Payton, it's not, you know, deflection to bring up that defense.
34:11They gave up 247 yards after missed tackles. It's the most in the NFL since 2018 in that opener against the Chiefs.
34:18Speaking of piling up yards, how about starting your season with a casual 59 points on the road?
34:23Stacy Dales joins us on the driving force behind Ben Johnson's offense coming up next on The Insiders.
34:29That's who we want to be each week. We didn't get into this profession trying to be mediocre or average.
34:36Touchdown! The Bears are in business. We want to be the highest scoring, have the most wins.
34:41We want to win the Super Bowl. That's what we do.
34:4410-5 touchdown! The Bears continue to pile on. A 50-burger.
34:48It's great to have goals, as Ben Johnson did.
34:50Even better to live up to them. They've scored 59 points in the opener.
34:55The best since 1980. Most rush yards since 84.
34:58Most rushing touchdowns since 1941. You got to go back to 1980 to find them have eight touchdowns in a week.
35:04Week one. And they will go into their week two game against Carson Wentz.
35:09As Kyler Murray has been ruled out, had that very frightening looking concussion in the opener on the late hits.
35:15So it is Carson Wentz. And as I was informed moments ago by our friend Stacy Dales, we start number 100 for one Carson Wentz.
35:23That also means we get the Jalen Johnson against Justin Jefferson matchup, Stacy.
35:27Yes, this is the matchup of the J.J.'s. By the way, we're going to have some weather.
35:33How about it? Here in Chicago, maximum wind gusts.
35:35Patrick up to 28 miles per hour. 80% chance of rain.
35:39So buckle up. It's going to be a fun one.
35:42Justin Jefferson has 89 career receiving yards per game against the NFC North.
35:46That is a substantial number. Now, against the Chicago Bears, he has four receiving touchdowns in his career, but he has been brilliant with Carson Wentz.
35:54Dating back to last season, he was better with Wentz than any other quarterback that took the field in terms of scoring touchdowns.
36:02We saw two last week against the Green Bay Packers, which matched his season high from last season.
36:07Justin Jefferson, if you can think about that. And Carson Wentz said today, my job is to get him the football one on one.
36:15If he's got an inch, I got to throw it.
36:18I spoke with Jalen Johnson, who's going to see quite a bit of this guy.
36:23That's going to be a fun matchup. I spoke to Jalen Johnson today about it.
36:28And remember, Chicago second in the league after week one, 42% man defense with Dennis Allen.
36:33So you're going to see them having what Jalen Johnson, Patrick called a chess match.
36:38He said it's going to be a dog fight.
36:40And some of the things he told me, you got to stay in it for the whole time.
36:46You're going to win some, you're going to lose some, but you have to keep your mind in it because of that
36:53dog fight and be really good in situational moments.
36:56Certainly at times, you've got to show Justin Jefferson.
36:59Jalen told me different looks, whether you're off man, whether you're press, you might be a little more aggressive.
37:05You might be a little more soft. Again, this is going to be a cat and mouse game between the two of them.
37:12And it's certainly going to be a big difference maker in this game.
37:16Yeah. And a great matchup of offensive and defensive play callers.
37:20You mentioned the weather. I think one thing that would operate pretty well will be a nice ground game.
37:26They had those 291 rushing yards in the opener against the Carolina Panthers.
37:30Stacy. Yeah. I pulled a nugget out of our research pack, Pat packet, Patrick.
37:34There's a play on words. The bears are the third team in NFL history to have six rushing touchdowns in a season
37:41opener, dating back to the 1922 Canton Bulldogs and the 1920 Rock Island independence for you research nerds and buffs out there.
37:48It is a perfect blend up front. I spoke with Cole commit tight end with this group, and he told me they
37:55put a lot of good blocks on tape last week.
37:58Obviously, they were synchronized. He said they knew where they were going.
38:02The communication was exceptional. They knew where their IDs were, and they were just technically sound.
38:07Well, guess what? I spoke with Eric Wilson today from the Vikings defense.
38:11All the things that Cole commit told me this week.
38:15Eric Wilson told me linebacker for their group because it showed up to them on tape.
38:20You watch it right here on your screen. I mean, the way that this offensive line moved the line of scrimmage as
38:27commit told me they just continued to push back the Carolina Panthers and you saw Deandre Swift, Kyle, and that guy right there, Caleb Williams lead the charge.
38:36And as Eric Wilson told me, we cannot let Caleb Williams go.
38:39He called bonkers against us. They have to keep him in the pocket some way, somehow, and figure out how to corral this rushing attack.
38:47That is the number one priority for Brian Flores heading into Sunday.
38:51Looking forward to this game. A couple of offenses that were very successful.
38:55Stacy Dales on the Bears and the Vikings. We go from high-flying offenses to offenses that kind of struggled.
39:01First half turnovers plaguing both Baker Mayfield and Deshaun Watson on the road in week one.
39:06Deshaun Watson and the Browns on the road here again against Tampa where we haven't seen Deshaun Watson start at home through the preseason.
39:14This two games starting on the road. Judy, is this potentially the last stand for Deshaun Watson?
39:19Well, we'll have to see how week two goes.
39:22Certainly, week one did not go the way the Browns had hoped.
39:26Todd Munkin made Deshaun Watson the starting quarterback because he thought he gave them the best chance to win.
39:32They were starting the season two games on the road against two what we expect to be very good defenses.
39:38Certainly, the Jacksonville Jaguars proved to have a very good defense.
39:42The Bucs struggled last week all around. But he thought that Deshaun Watson gave the team the best chance to win in those cases.
39:49It did not pan out last week. The offensive operation wasn't good.
39:53Deshaun wasn't good on his own. Todd Munkin has stood by Deshaun Watson so far.
39:58He said he's liked what he's seen in practice.
40:01He saw stuff on tape that he thought was good.
40:04We'll see how he performs this week. We know that the reception at the home game is probably not going to be good for Deshaun Watson.
40:12So they're going to have a decision to make if the play does not improve this week about whether they want to
40:19put Deshaun Watson out there or go to Shador Sanders.
40:22Yeah, play this week could influence how that reception goes for Deshaun Watson when they make that home opener in Cleveland.
40:29The 49ers return victorious home from Australia. Now we'll play host to the Dolphins coming up on Sunday.
40:35They had a solid defensive performance against the Rams.
40:38Meanwhile, the Dolphins kind of struggled to generate yards.
40:41They were led in receiving by rookie Caleb Douglas, where we have in this matchup one of the oldest rosters in the
40:48NFL against the absolute youngest roster in Miami. But the old vets, wide receiver, I know they hate calling them old.
40:54They look pretty good for the 49ers in the opener.
40:57Debo Samuel, old. 30 years old. We're all actually old.
41:01He's not that old. But yes, let's talk about the San Francisco 49ers pass catchers.
41:05It is a week after Deshaun Stripling was knocked out for the next 10 or so weeks with a deltoid rupture.
41:12Obviously, Ricky Pierce also out for the season. What that has meant is that Debo Samuel returned to the 49ers at the year away with the commanders.
41:20Has the ability to really step into the spotlight.
41:23He had a really solid performance last week. Probably opened some people's eyes about what he can do physically.
41:29Had several catches. Had a touchdown. Really reminded you of the last couple years with the 49ers.
41:35Debo will have the opportunity to prove that this is real and keep his stay in San Francisco a little bit longer
41:42if he keeps performing like he has. It just feels right.
41:45It's the familiarity there to have him there in that 19 jersey making plays for the San Francisco 49ers.
41:51Coming up here on the insiders, we look to where the last dance for Aaron Rodgers goes up against the ascension of Drake May.
41:59How does the MVP runner up bounce back after the loss in the opener and how he does it with the two time MVP on the other sideline.
42:08That's coming up next on the inside. I'm Brett Coleman and I'm Trevor Sikama.
42:12Have you ever watched a game and wondered what really made the difference beyond the final score?
42:18That's exactly why we created NFL Pro. Got a man wide open.
42:21Every week, we use exclusive next-gen stats insights and NFL content to break down the biggest stories, matchups, and moments from around the league.
42:29We go beyond the box score to uncover the numbers, the tendencies, and details that help explain what actually happened on the field.
42:36Fires it out in the flat to Barkley, who beats one man, spins past another, leaps over a third.
42:42And don't worry, this isn't just a show for stats experts.
42:46We use advanced analytics to help tell the story behind the game, turning the numbers into insights that every fan can understand and enjoy.
42:53So whether you're a casual fan learning more about football or a hardcore fan who can't get enough analysis, our goal is

46:12Looking forward to week two for the Patriots and the Steelers.
46:15A lot of folks questionable for this game, including Michael Pittman Jr., Draymond Jones, and Carlton Davis.
46:20Joey Porter ruled out with that back injury, but one notable name not on this graphic we didn't see in week one,
46:27Travion Henderson, excuse me, of the New England Patriots.
46:30As we've got this matchup with the Patriots back at home after the loss in the opener.
46:36Judy, what does Travion do for this offense that had a rough start against the Super Bowl champs?
46:41Well, it should certainly help bolster their rushing attack, and they may need to lean on that a little bit.
46:48As you pointed out, Drake May struggled a bit in week one.
46:52Josh McDaniels, his offensive coordinator, said, You know, teams have a year's worth of tape on Drake May now, so they are
46:59able to figure out what he likes to do, where he likes to go.
47:03And one of the things that you've seen the top defenses do, they were doing it in the playoffs last year, and
47:10we saw it last week with Seattle as well, is they're trying to take away that deep pass that Drake May was so very effective with last season.
47:19They're trying to take it away from him. And so they're forcing him to sort of take that short underneath passes and go methodically down the field.
47:27Drake May said himself he lost patience last week, and he launched three balls down the field that were intercepted.
47:34They were all when he was trying to go down the field.
47:38So Josh McDaniels says, you know, you need discipline to stay patient that way.
47:42He doesn't like the word patient. He likes the word discipline.
47:45They need to stay patient. But one way to get teams out of staying back to defend those deep passes is to run the ball effectively.
47:54We will see if they can do it this week.
47:57Yeah, we call it a bounce back. I'm going to check how different things would be if the decision making was just
48:04a little bit different for Drake May in the closing moments there.
48:08Total benefit meltdown for the Los Angeles Chargers in their opener.
48:11They've got the Raiders coming to SoFi this week.
48:14See, they're Brock Bowers back at practice with the knee injury, but he is still doubtful.
48:19He's 10 days removed from having his knee cleaned up on the other side.
48:24Ladin McConkie questionable for the game on Sunday. He left the game in week one with a rib injury that came on
48:30this hit from Mack Wilson over the middle again questionable for Sunday.
48:34It was Jordan Love and the Packers getting blitzed a ton by the Minnesota Vikings in week one up next.
48:41Another defensive play caller that's had Jordan Love's number is on the schedule.
48:45We break that down coming up next on the inside back here on the inside.
48:50Look at the injury designations for the Jets and the Packers in week two.
48:54Both Omar Cooper, Jr. and Mika Fitzpatrick out of the game.
48:57One with an ankle one with a groin injury and keep an eye on Aaron banks.
49:03It questionable as is Lucas Van Ness. Javon Hargrave doubtful for the Green Bay Packers.
49:07Aaron Glenn very familiar with and complimentary of Jordan Love ahead of the game.
49:12Number one, his arm talent is unbelievable. And when I say that, it's man the different angles that he throws from.
49:18I mean you clearly see that when you watch the tape.
49:22The arm strength, his ability to get out the pocket and then be able to launch the ball deep.
49:28You see that quite a bit. I know sometimes they don't want a lot of quarterbacks doing this, but when you have
49:35the ability that he has of man maybe rolling to your right and being able to flick it and throw it back to you.
49:42He has the ability to do that. And everybody doesn't have that ability.
49:47But when you have the talent that he has, I think most coaches will be like, okay, you know, you do you
49:54and just make sure you throw it to our team.
49:57So he's done a good job of that. And he's really dangerous.
50:01I mean, I think he's he's more elusive than guys might give him credit for.
50:05So we want to try to keep him in the pocket as much as we can.
50:10But we also want to deter some of these throws that he have because he has these these receivers out there that
50:17can make a lot that can cause a lot of damage.
50:21They all four three guys. They're all tough guys.
50:24They all can go up and catch the ball.
50:27So it'll be a challenge for our secondary. Good day for tracking the QB wins against Aaron Glenn led defenses, one in three for Jordan Love.
50:35But a lot's changed for both of them since the last time they faced off.
50:40That's right. Aaron Glenn is was five and three when he was with the Lions against the Packers.
50:45And they won the last two games against the Packers in his last year there as defensive coordinator before he took the Jets head coaching job.
50:54So he is very familiar with the opponent. Of course, he has to take them on without make a Fitzpatrick.
51:00As we told you, the safety is out for this game with a groin injury.
51:05Jordan Love racked up a lot of yards last week, but the Vikings blitzed him like crazy.
51:10Well, Aaron Glenn likes to blitz like crazy, too.
51:13As a matter of fact, I believe the Jets blitz second as second most often compared to just behind the Minnesota Vikings.
51:20So I would certainly expect to see a variety of blitzes to try to disrupt Jordan Love.
51:25But look, Aaron Glenn is calling the plays for this defense now.
51:29He called it his superpower. He took back defensive play calling this year.
51:33This defense feels a lot more confident with Aaron Glenn calling things.
51:37They like where they are. We will see how they match up this year against Jordan Love.
51:42And see if they can break the streak with Jordan Love.
51:4618 straight games without an interception as that Jets defense goes up against the Packers.
51:51It was a bit of an up and down game for Jalen Hurts.
51:55Had three touchdowns, no interceptions, but only completed 56% of his passes.
51:59Nick Sirianni on playing a Robert Sala defense this week.
52:02Yeah, I think that you've seen Coach Sala, Coach defenses be extremely good defenses, you know, over the past decade of the NFL.
52:09And so I have a lot of respect for him and Coach Bradley.
52:13You know, just think the world of those two guys, you know, particularly Coach, you know, again, I miss it, particularly Coach Bradley because I've worked with him.
52:22And so got a ton of respect for those guys.
52:25You know, they always get their guys to play hard, play with good fundamentals.
52:30And then you look at the, you know, starting with Simmons, the guys that they have on that team.
52:36And, you know, obviously he's a phenomenal football player.
52:38We're going to have to know where he is at all times in this football game.
52:44And make sure, you know, we got good football players too.
52:47And so, you know, those are some things that you think about before you go in and play this game.
52:53And we celebrate mutual respect, but most eyes are going to be on the number one overall pick of a couple of years ago, Cam Ward.
53:02Yeah, it seems Cam Ward, especially locally, is starting to get some heat a little bit about his performance and the struggles that he has had.
53:10Understandably, everyone wants their quarterback to really kind of hit the stride and find some of that success.
53:16Cam Ward, as talented as anyone, the former number one overall pick, as you mentioned, having to answer questions this week.
53:22Well, if you think you're a successful, good quarterback, why have you not exactly played like it?
53:28All of that stuff gets quiet if Cam Ward can have a breakout performance against the Philadelphia Eagles.
53:33If that happens, he can all breathe a little easier.
53:37And I know some in the organization will as well.
53:40Yeah, because a lot can change. A lot can change, especially conversationally around the league between a couple of weeks.
53:46Week one can occasionally show us things that may not be true in the long term.
53:51It's going to be a long time until we see you.
53:55We're going to miss you. The Insiders will be back on Tuesday for Ian Rapport, Judy Batista.
