0:00This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed Human. Tonight in New Orleans.
0:04It is next on the NFL Report. How is it already almost week five?
0:08I don't know. Good to be back in the studio in Los Angeles.
0:12We're presented by Nationwide. My name is Andrew Siciliano.
0:15Coming up, Scott Hanson is here and we'll have the conversation.
0:19Are there any great teams through the first month of the year?
0:23The answer might be no. Let's do our headlines here.
0:26Our big news, our latest headlines. What is news to me?
0:30As we look back on yesterday's games, Lamar Jackson status for Sunday night and it's a Sunday night game this week for
0:37the Ravens is very much up in the air.
0:40Jackson missed the second half of that Ravens win over the Titans yesterday with a sprained ankle.
0:46It did not look good here late in the second quarter when it happened.
0:50Lamar responded to a tweet of the injury. The video later in the afternoon with an ouch.
0:56Here's Jesse Minner today. We're still gathering a lot of the information and the imaging and things like that.
1:02Just dealing with a little bit of an ankle and we'll kind of see where that shakes out.
1:08Full trust and confidence in him that when it's ready to roll, that we'll roll and go from there.
1:14Irrespective of Sunday, are you able to say whether or not it's a long term injury or a shorter term thing?
1:21No, I really don't think it's going to be crazy long term, but we'll see what happens.
1:27Ravens are in Atlanta on Sunday night. Jamar Chase meantime in Cincinnati is in concussion protocol.
1:32Really ugly play here. It's a blatant face mask.
1:35They called that and then there's a shot to the head and Chase was done for the day.
1:41Bengals are in Miami. They're two and two. The Bengals are coming up on Sunday afternoon.
1:46Saquon Barkley has a hamstring. Nick Sirianni would not say on Monday any update on Barkley status.
1:52Remember, he's wearing the cowboy collar now, so there's the neck issue from the stinger a couple of weeks ago.
1:58Now a hammy as the Eagles get ready to go to London to face the Jaguars.
2:04They're going to fly out on Friday Friday. Evidently, they're taking the Rams travel plans as they head to Tottenham.
2:10Denver injury news probably a little bit better on Monday than might have been expected on Sunday evening.
2:16The Broncos according to Ian Rapp report say that Pat Sertan and Pat Bryant, the two pats got their MRIs today, and
2:23they have avoided worst case scenarios on both injuries.
2:26They are ankle injuries and they are expected to be short term injuries there, which is good news certainly for the Broncos who lost to the 49ers.
2:35I mentioned it's a long list. Kyle Juszczyk avoided a serious injury as well for the 49ers.
2:41For Marcus Mariota, it is an MCL. Dan Quinn says it's the same MCL injury that he had a couple of months ago.
2:48T Higgins is out with an abductor injury. He is day to day.
2:53The bad one there is Edron Cooper, the linebacker for the Packers.
2:57He is done for at least this season with an Achilles injury in Washington.
3:01As mentioned, Dan Quinn with that Mariota injury. They are hoping to get Jaden Daniels back in the lineup coming up this Sunday against the Giants.
3:10Washington was in London on Sunday. Mariota is not going to be able to go if it's not Jaden Daniels, that it's
3:17going to be eighth and Callie McManus, the rookie out of Rutgers who finished that game at Tottenham.
3:23Aaron Donald probably back on Monday. A week from tonight, the Rams will close out week five hosting the Bills at SoFi Stadium.
3:30Sean McVay said the hope is Donald will play.
3:33He sat out yesterday's game in Philadelphia. Big Rams win with a back injury.
3:38Ben Johnson has already made up his mind. It is going to be Tyson Bajan at quarterback this coming Sunday, one o'clock
3:45Eastern time when the Bears go to Lambeau to face the Packers.
3:49He made that announcement earlier today on the radio with friend of the program, Jeff Joniak.
3:54Johnson, however, is still a bit concerned about Bajan's ball security.
3:58When you haven't played a ton of football in a while, he certainly understands how important it is to team success.
4:05But at the same time, we don't want him to lose his aggressiveness level either.
4:10We had some opportunities for some big plays down the field that he didn't pull the trigger on also.
4:16And so there's a balancing act there. It's something that we'll be able to talk to him about, review the tape and learn from and move on from.
4:25But, you know, he certainly is conscious about how important it is to give our guys a chance, give them good accurate
4:33balls and keep it moving from there. But he made a lot of really good decisions throughout that game.
4:39I thought the operation was really smooth and really clean.
4:42And I think his teammates really responded to him being out there.
4:46Caleb Williams, by the way, officially ruled out for week five already.
4:50All right, let's get to the highlights. Two undefeated teams, 3-0, 3-0.
4:54The Chiefs, the Raiders. What a game this was in Vegas.
4:58And what a day Kenneth Walker III had. This is his second touchdown.
5:02Oh, the day. He ran for a buck 77.
5:05He leads the NFL with 537. And the Chiefs had a big lead fourth quarterback.
5:10Back comes Kirk Cousins. Look at the elusiveness. Elite elusiveness to Brock Bowers for a touchdown.
5:15And this is still somehow a game. Raiders get the ball back.
5:19Look at the clock. 10 seconds. Midfield. Try to set up a field goal, but no.
5:24Nope. Xavier Nwankpa with the pick. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs go to 4-0.
5:29Obviously, we're 4-0. That's where we wanted to be at going into the bye.
5:33But now how can we learn from these first four weeks in this bye week that it can be better when we come back out?
5:42We'll have a tough stretch going against the Chargers.
5:45And then going up, I think, to Seattle and then Denver.
5:48So, be able to really test who we are.
5:51And so, now it's about kind of getting better throughout this bye week.
5:55Obviously, you take time for yourself, but you get better and watch the film so you can be a better team on the other side of it.
6:04But I think we had a great start. Now it's about how we continue and how we finish.
6:10Question for you. Do you have NFL Plus Premium?
6:13Okay. Why not? Go get it. Please. You get every touchdown every Sunday.
6:17You get NFL Road Zone. You get all the advanced AI analytics, all that stuff.
6:22The NGS with NFL Pro. So, you get all the fun.
6:26Sign up today at plus.nfl.com. Plus.nfl.com slash fast. Terms and conditions do apply.
6:30There are no conditions of having fun on Sunday, however, when you watch NFL Red Zone with this guy wearing orange.
6:37Scott Hanson in orange today, friends. A little orange, you know.
6:41There's a tie. There's a double tie here. Double orange.
6:44And people can Google what that's all about. The Bronx are 3-1 and SU won it over time.
6:50But that was not the story of the weekend.
6:53Not necessarily. I'll tell you what. How about a little bombast and hyperbole to begin our...
6:58Are you saying you're bombastic or occasionally hyperbomb? I'm about to be right now.
7:03I got a couple of season-saving catches to go over right now.
7:07The one that's getting all the play right here.
7:10Go ahead and roll it. Efton Chisholm. I love them.
7:13This is third and long. Efton Chisholm. They had to have a touchdown.
7:17A minute and 50 seconds left. It's too much to say...
7:21I jumped off my couch and threw it. That the New England Patriots season kind of hung in the balance.
7:27They lose this game. They're a one-win team. Buffalo has a three-game lead in the division already.
7:33Buffalo getting all the love and whatnot. And what are we talking about today?
7:38If he doesn't make this one-handed catch here, we're talking about two more turnovers by Drake May.
7:43We're talking about Mike Vrabel losing his poise on the sideline, giving him a touchdown ultimately on the 15-yard penalty.
7:50The sky would be absolutely falling in New England.
7:53And Efton Chisholm, who has never been on a practice squad...
7:56No, but C.J. Gardner Johnson has in his life.
7:59He has a lot recently, actually. Yeah, yeah. I didn't have a big problem with C.J.
8:05Gardner Johnson. I get it. You know, he needed a 20-minute cooling off period instead of the 10-minute cooling off period.
8:12Efton Chisholm. Okay, I got another one. These are season-saving catches.
8:15Plural. As in the 17 of them that C.D.
8:18Lamb made. Also, how is he singled up here?
8:21And that was the game-winning... Yeah, exactly. Texans' defense that we were lauding going into the season, not so much anymore.
8:28But if the Dallas Cowboys don't have this fourth quarter come from behind game-winning drive and credit the Dak, but C.D.
8:35was absolutely unstoppable. Then you're talking about a one-win Dallas Cowboys team with a defense that lets all this stuff up, that
8:42loses to a winless Texans team and whatnot. The sky would be falling in Dallas.
8:47C.D. Lamb, the game of his life, 189. The touchdown there with 40 seconds left.
8:5211-play, 74-yard drive. Dallas, with the Philadelphia loss... I know the Giants are hanging around there too, but Dallas is probably the
8:59leader in the clubhouse to win that division now based on what we just saw happen yesterday against the Texans.
9:06And the Texans still win less. All right, storyline number two.
9:09Yeah. All three phases. Explain that. With a question mark, all three phases.
9:14You say, you know, coach speak, all three phases.
9:17How about all one phases? We got a couple of teams, and I'm going right back to Dallas, that have half of
9:24the team figured out or a third of the team figured out.
9:28That Dallas offense is good enough to stand with anyone.
9:31Their defense is as bad as they were last year just about, Andrew.
9:35Absolutely. I mean, they're giving... I know they've got...
9:38They spent draft capital. They spent free agency money.
9:41They still are bottom five in points per game, bottom five in yards per game allowed, bottom five in sacks, bottom five in takeaways.
9:49They, the Dallas defense has got to get something figured out.
9:53I know they've got some players. Jay Sean Barham, the rookie out of Michigan, looks pretty good.
9:58But they are one handed right now on offense.
10:01They're on defense. Meanwhile, if we could use an NFL dating service and pair the Dallas offense with the Minnesota defense...
10:08And special teams for that matter. And special teams for that matter.
10:12We'd be good to go because the Minnesota offense is just...
10:16It's lost right now. This Minnesota offense, Kyler Murray has not...
10:19Granted, he's missed time. Granted, Justin Jefferson is missed time right now.
10:23But they are 4-0 winning two of those four games without scoring a touchdown.
10:28Have you seen the meme of Will Reichard, their kicker?
10:31Who's 12 for 12 on the year, by the way, right now, carrying the entire franchise on his shoulders.
10:37It's like... And Miles Price as well with the returns.
10:41It's all special teams in defense. It bums me out though, because you and I love good football.
10:47Minnesota, it could be an amazing football team. They're undefeated right now.
10:51Dallas could be an amazing football team right now if the other part, the other phase would step up.
10:57And they better start doing it here as we're now into the second month of the season.
11:02Which gets us to the final headline. We did Chiefs highlights a little bit ago.
11:07They are undefeated. Yay! Undefeated, they make the playoffs.
11:10Yep. Is there anyone that's any good here? Like, a truly great team where you say, I don't want to play them if I see them.
11:19Well, so before I came out here, I used my favorite AI of choice.
11:24I'm not going to name it because no one's paying me to do that.
11:28These are the Vegas odds right now to win the Super Bowl.
11:32Number one is still the Los Angeles Rams. Yeah, the two and two Rams.
11:37Number two is the Buffalo Bills, who just lost an ugly game to the New England Patriots.
11:42Probably should have lost a couple weeks ago against the Chargers.
11:46Number three is the Baltimore Ravens. We've got the star quarterback in a walking boot.
11:51Number four is San Francisco, the substation. Number five is Seattle, and they're capable of going to Washington and losing to backup quarterback Marcus Mariota.
11:59Is anyone any good? That doesn't even mention Jacksonville, Kansas City, who you said, and the Chicago Bears, who you could make
12:06an argument for, could be the Super Bowl favorite.
12:09The reason I bring this up as a storyline is we love the NFL and we love the fact that any given
12:16Sunday and all of that, you would figure a month into the season, we'd have a little shape, a little color on, hey, this is my team.
12:25You could make an argument for eight or nine teams right now as being the best team in the NFL.
12:32And you could also then make the argument that it's parody and that's why you love it.
12:38Yeah. Because you have no idea who's going to win.
12:41Not at the quarter poll because technically it's 17 games.
12:44They can't actually have a quarter poll. Good point.
12:47Good point. Mass guy. Mass guy. Four games in.
12:50Nobody knows. But we do know that Scott wore orange today.
12:54You should do that every week. If your pro team and our college team will do their part, maybe I will.
13:01When the Browns beat the Jets next week, Scott's wearing orange on Monday.
13:05Oh, I can't guarantee that. I'll be here with you.
13:08I'm just saying it's going to happen. Thank you, sir.
13:11You got it, bud. 14 yards of punt. Game ball is going to everybody in this city.
13:17This city is getting this game ball from our organization, this team.
13:21This game ball is going to the city of New Orleans.
13:25One of the iconic plays in NFL history 20 years ago.
13:28Hard to believe it was 20 years ago. Steve Gleason blocks the punt.
13:32And then tonight on the 20 year anniversary, the dome coming game, the Saints and the Falcons.
13:38Roman Harper joins us now on the NFL report.
13:41The former Saint DB, you were there that night.
13:44Thanks for joining us, Roman. Thanks for having me so much.
13:48Uh, listen, going back to those memories, listen to Sean say that you almost like forget it.
13:53Uh, like just being in the moment, uh, the given the game ball, I saw Avery Johnson in the background, who was
14:00one of the guys that is from New Orleans that spoke to our team leading up to that, that actually ended up
14:08getting a Superbowl ring with us four years later.
14:11So, uh, crazy all the memories seeing Hollis Thomas, a couple of the guys in the background, some of the doctors that
14:18I know and still cared so much about and a truly, truly a special moment.
14:23You also saying that was 20 years ago makes me feel a little bit old.
14:28I mean, seriously, we all remember where we were.
14:31You, you were actually there watching that block punt and obviously playing in that game.
14:36We see the block punt, Steve Gleason laying out there on your T-shirt.
14:40What is your lasting memory Roman of that night?
14:43Week three, 2006. You know, it's crazy because I was so young.
14:47I was a rookie 23 years old at the time.
14:50And, uh, I was just excited to play against Michael Vick because he was the cheat code in Madden for all my years of college.
14:58So like, to me, I was like, Oh my gosh, Michael Vick.
15:02And then you get in the Superdome and that night and people are crying all the emotions.
15:08You can just totally feel it. Just being in the building.
15:11It was a crazy moment, crazy night. And the funny thing is, is I looked up, you know, all these years later,
15:19I've got to know Michael Vick and I've met his wife and his family.
15:23And, you know, I've talked to his wife and she was like, you were at that game.
15:29I was like, yeah, I was on the other side.
15:32Right. She's like, you know, she's like, I've seen Mike playing a lot of games.
15:37That's the only game I've been to within the first two minutes of just being in an arena.
15:43She was like, they have no chance to win this game.
15:47Like no chance. Like there. So it wasn't just me.
15:50Everybody felt it in that building that night. It was just something special.
15:54And so, you know, you never truly appreciate the good old days when you're living in them.
16:00And so now I look back and look and say, man, I wish I just would have cherished it just a little bit more.
16:08Take the gloves with me. Maybe the the towel or something from that game because it was special.
16:14And I'm one of the rare and few people that can say I was in the game.
16:19I played in that game and I was on the winning side of it.
16:24And it was it's something I'll always remember and cherish.
16:27Honestly, Roman, I'm getting chills just thinking about it right now.
16:31There's a reason that play has a statue outside the dome.
16:34There's a reason they call that play the rebirth because post Katrina, it was a rebirth for the city and for the region.
16:42Roman, what does this team and what does that play mean for the people of New Orleans?
16:47Uh, it's this sense of never giving up that we are still together.
16:52We are one. You know, the city of New Orleans, it's all about the culture.
16:57You hear people talk about that all the time.
17:00Well, the culture is the people. And so I don't think you understand.
17:04You know, I remember so vividly the the FEMA trailers, the blue tarps on all the houses that like in the Saints, that team that year.
17:12We were the only three to four hours on a weekly basis that some people had joy.
17:18There wasn't a lot of joy outside of that.
17:21I remember, you know, the numbers outside of all the homes that were boarded up where it said one cat, one dog.
17:28How many how many bodies they found in the house or what was left over inside the remains.
17:34And so it's it was crazy. You know, I'm coming from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa.
17:39I'm from Alabama. I come away four and a half hours downtown down the road to a city that I thought was
17:47so nice and a spectacle, but it was in total disarray and destruction still.
17:51And so it was sad. But ultimately, the Saints, that team that year is what ultimately kind of brought all the attention
17:58back because we won 10, 11 games. We went to an NFC championship game.
18:03We collected so many more fans from outside the normal river Gulf Coast region that year.
18:08And it was special. And so New Orleans is will forever be my second city outside of Prattville, Alabama, being my first
18:15city and special, special time in my life. And that I truly will forever be indebted to that city.
18:22Oh, man, look at that young Roman making plays.
18:25Look at the young Roman Harper making a play on Michael Turner.
18:29Look at that. Get the ball out. Let's go.
18:32And shout out to Alex Crumpler, who was a great tight end.
18:36And yes, he was another player. I was just excited to play against as well.
18:40So shout out to all those guys. So it's good seeing those memories.
18:45I wish my son could see it because he always calls me.
18:49I'm not good. I'm just old and dah, dah, dah.
18:52So it's good to kind of see some older memories every time, every now and then.
18:57In our final minute, let's spin it forward here.
19:00Perfect transition to football because it's an emotional night.
19:03There's all the feels and all the memories tonight as well.
19:07But you also have the Saints trying to beat the Falcons.
19:10Atlanta looked awful a week ago. Then all of a sudden they go to Green Bay and they win.
19:17They beat the Packers. The Saints, the Saints feel like they should be better than their record at one and two, Roman.
19:24So what goes down tonight? You know, first of all, if you can't get up for this game, number one, it's versus Atlanta.
19:31The fans don't like each other. The rivalry is real.
19:35It's at home. The Saints are going to have the gold pants on, which I think a lot of people are saying that's a big deal.
19:43So that's tradition for them. And so the Saints should be better.
19:47You know, you're a fumble call away versus Detroit from winning that game.
19:51A lot of people are saying last week it should have been a, you know, incomplete pass for Tyler Shuck last week
19:59when it was called a fumble versus the Raiders.
20:02And they were up big. They were up 17.
20:05And all of a sudden you give up all those points in the fourth quarter.
20:10And I think I remember Michael Pennix is playing better in this year for himself and B.
20:15John Robinson, you have to find a way to corral him and stop him.
20:20The linebacker situation for the Saints with all those injuries, that's going to be a problem.
20:25So how do you rise up, use the emotions, and ultimately get a turnover or two, get the dome behind you, and
20:32come around and mess around and get a win?
20:35Like sometimes you've got to play for bigger things than just their name on the back of your jersey.
20:41I think tonight the Saints have to tap into that.
20:45You have a lot of former players there, a lot of people there in the building that are waiting for the Saints
20:52to just have a great big win, and not just for that team but for the whole city and all the Saints fans and who that's out there.
21:01If there's a night to do it, tonight would be the night.
21:05By the way, go listen to Roman's podcast with the great Charles Peanut Tillman, the second Axe podcast.
