0:00This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed Human. It's a brand new edition of NFL: The Insiders.
0:05A contract dispute has led to a trade. Joey Porter is Dallas bound.
0:09The details on what went wrong in Pittsburgh and what it means for the Cowboys defense.
0:13Week four, it's kicking off tonight. It's a TNF matchup with those Steelers and the Browns.
0:18Pittsburgh, they came alive on Sunday and don't look now, but Cleveland's won two consecutive games.
0:23We preview a crucial game in the AFC North.
0:25And if you watch power rankings this week, the 49ers with the number one team on the list.
0:30Our experts got a red flag that could be an issue against Bo Nix and the Broncos.
0:35And welcome to a fresh edition of NFL Report.
0:38We are presented by Nationwide. I'm Mike and my guy Lance Irline is going to be joining us in just a few moments.
0:45There's plenty to talk about. Not only the trade, but we will preview TNF.
0:49But we want to start with the headlines and the story that has taken over to the NFL world is Joey Porter Jr.
0:56now officially on the move. And there was some buzz.
0:59About whether or not he was going to be long for this city traded to the Cowboys for a 2027 six round
1:05pick in a 2028 second rounder discontent on a contract negotiation reporter hasn't played at all this season.
1:10He was one of these Steelers draft picks in 2023.
1:13A second round second rounder who's been sidelined because of a back injury Cowboys.
1:17They need help. Kobe Durant expected to sit out a second game because of a hamstring injury.
1:22Their defensive coordinator Christian Parker's got more. He's a high level coverage player.
1:26Plays with great length. He has a lot of experience against a lot of high level receivers.
1:31So we have evidence of how he does in that environment.
1:34So really excited about adding him in. I was familiar with him when he was at Penn State coming out of the draft.
1:41I was in Denver at the time. Same player he is now, you know, played with great length, was a boundary eraser,
1:48plays with a really competitive and edge to him that we value.
1:51So he's a guy that I've tracked, you know, over the years I've had some taller corners.
1:56You always look at comp tapes for different players.
1:59He certainly fits the mold for that. Yeah, he does.
2:02Brian Schottenheimer's got to be happy as well about this little extra ammo on that defense.
2:06Say they're hopeful that Porter will play Sunday's moved around good today.
2:10It was a good start today. It was a positive first day should be noted.
2:14Joey Porter Jr. Did address some of the media saying that his back was feeling better.
2:19And this is important here. Dallas's defense didn't serve for a team in its totality.
2:23A little feast or famine so far this season defensively.
2:26One of the worst in the NFL a season ago.
2:29You add a guy like Joey Porter Jr. into the mix and that will help your defense, especially on that back end.
2:36Lance Erline is with us right now. Lance, give me the details.
2:39How significant of a move is this from a Cowboys perspective?
2:42Well, it's very significant. First of all, you give up a sixth rounder this year and then, of course, a second rounder next year.
2:50But from a pure football standpoint, you know, Christian Parker needs to find a cornerback that can D up.
2:55Obviously, you have some injuries right now, so depth is a problem.
2:59But this is a cornerback one. This is somebody, as he mentioned, that's long, he's strong, he can press, he can really
3:05bother the catch space for bigger wide receivers. And with a little safety help over the top, I think that's the one
3:11area of concern is can he get beat over the top?
3:15Well, if you're playing over the top with safeties or a safety over the top, you don't worry about it as much.
3:21So what he allows Christian Parker to do now is become more aggressive because Christian Parker can trust Joey Porter Jr.
3:27He's a cornerback that allows you to have more trust in being aggressive as a defensive coordinator.
3:32The one thing I will say, though, Mike, is that I'm not sure that he's going to be ready right out of
3:39the gate to have the impact that he will maybe in three or four games.
3:43It's it's been a while since he's played football.
3:46Yeah, it's been more than a minute here at this point of that back injury.
3:50There was some concerns about that. He did address that today.
3:53Once again, saying he is feeling better from that perspective.
3:56We got a little bit more over the next couple of weeks or so about this signing.
4:01It is significant because it feels like the chips this offseason have gone fully to the middle of the table from a Cowboys perspective.
4:08Cam Hayward getting ready. Yeah, we got a TNF matchup coming up tonight.
4:12The Steelers matching up against the Cleveland Browns. It's Carson Wentz.
4:15Boy, that is a great mop on the top of that dome.
4:19Time for primetime preview. It is presented by Nationwide.
4:22Lance, I got to be honest with everyone, and I feel like I'm not in the minority on this one.
4:27If you would have told me this quarterback matchup, it feels different today than it would have felt a few weeks ago.
4:34I mean, Cleveland's playing some good basketball, and I'll look on the flip side.
4:38And right now, the Steelers were able to come alive on Sunday, which didn't look like that was possible through the first two weeks.
4:45What do we expect from Deshaun Watson? Yeah, it's funny.
4:48I was just circling Deshaun Watson right now on my little note card because it's been impressive seeing Deshaun make a little bit of a comeback, quite frankly.
4:56His football was terrible over the last several years when he wasn't injured.
5:00I saw the best of Deshaun when he was with the Houston Texans.
5:04The Deshaun I'm seeing now is not the same version, but he's a better version than we've seen with Cleveland.
5:10Very good game two games ago. Last game, he did what he needed to do to get the win.
5:15The touchdowns are outpacing the interceptions. He ran for over 40 yards last week.
5:19He's playing good football. Now, Aaron Rodgers on the flip side had a great game last week against Joe Burrow.
5:25He kind of turned the clock back a little bit with almost 300 yards passing, had three touchdowns to a lone interception.
5:32But right there, some of the throws you're seeing, this is a throw to Roman Wilson that we haven't seen a whole
5:38lot over the last couple years, is being able to attack defenses down the field, stretch him out.
5:43If Aaron can continue to do that, that's going to be big.
5:47Cleveland's got a good defense. They're feisty. They are a defense that, frankly, is pretty disciplined.
5:52I think this is a really good matchup. Really intrigued to see which quarterback comes out and plays the best brand of
5:58football, because that could and probably will determine the outcome of this one.
6:02Yeah, and by the way, I mean, important in this division, all of a sudden you've got a bunch of teams that
6:08are all sitting with a 2-1 record. This is helpful when you talk about some of these divisional matchups.
6:14By the way, more on this game. I know I saw Bucky in makeup.
6:18He's getting ready for our game day preview coming up right after this show.
6:22We'll get you set for Thursday Night Football. Lance, more from you coming up in just a moment here on NFL Reports.
6:29We've got some other news to get to, and boy, how about the Chicago Bears team?
6:33Case Keenum delivered a vintage performance Monday night. Bears, they took out the Eagles.
6:37What's interesting is what they do against the Jets.
6:40Caleb dealing with a hamstring injury. That leaves Tyson Bajan and Keenum.
6:44Ben Johnson set the table on his quarterback room.
6:46Yeah, we've got three guys, and we'll kind of work through the week and see where they're at.
6:51What would be the factors, one direction or another?
6:54Whoever we feel like gives us the best chance to win.
6:57Is it more accurate to say that you don't know who the starter's going to be or you don't want to advertise who the starter's going to be?
7:06I don't know. That's a fair question. Fair question.
7:08Come on. We'll know on Sunday who's playing. We're good.
7:11All right, so Coach Johnson playing a little coy with us.
7:14That is legitimately going to be an intriguing decision for Ben Johnson.
7:18Meanwhile, Packers, one and two on the air, have not been able to run the football.
7:23Last in the league, he carries in rushing yards.
7:25Hit the road against an 0-3 Bucs team that's playing without Baker Mayfield.
7:29Out with that finger injury. Matt LaFleur knows this team has got to figure out how to run the football effectively.
7:35By no means is it going to be easy.
7:38This is one of the stingiest run defenses in the National Football League.
7:42They've got great size up front, and it's an attacking style of defense.
7:45So they do a really good job. But I do think it keeps defenses a little bit more off balance.
7:51You're not one-dimensional. I think any time you're one-dimensional in this league, you can kind of zero in on that from a defensive perspective.
7:58And it makes life really hard. And life has been hard for this Green Bay Packers team.
8:03Fewest rush yards through three games of any team in franchise history.
8:07You look at what these Packers have been able to accomplish for lack thereof.
8:11Dead last in a bunch of statistical categories. Puts a whole lot of pressure on Jordan Love to deliver.
8:16Lance, fix the run game for the Packers for me ahead of this Bucs game.
8:21What do they need to do? Well, I mean, draft work, I guess.
8:25We may need to try to fix it in April, Mike, because I don't think we're going to fix it this year.
8:31You lost a starting tackle. That hurts. But really what we're seeing right now so far through the first three games is
8:38the offensive line play just really isn't good enough.
8:40And when the offensive line play isn't good enough to open up some holes, you need running backs who can create for themselves.
8:47And there's no Josh Jacobs who can create with some wiggle, can create with some power.
8:52So you don't have a creative running back. You don't have an offensive line that's opening holes.
8:57You're giving up too much pressure on your quarterback.
8:59I mean, it starts in the trenches. And for Green Bay, I don't think it's a quick fix.
9:05I'm not sure you're going to find a fix.
9:07And now you take on a front in Tampa Bay that's this stingy on the ground.
9:12I think they're going to be one dimensional once again this week, Mike.
9:16Yeah, tough sledding too. I made reference to the fact that Baker Mayfield not playing Jalen Daniels, the undrafted rookie out of Kansas.
9:22We'll get the start. Actually, we had eyes on him at the East West Rumble.
9:27He actually played pretty effectively. Not a huge shocker that he was able to win that starting backup job.
9:32But welcome to the NFL if you get thrusted into a matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
9:37More to come here, though, on NFL Reports, including Cam Bynum is going to stop by with us.
9:43Plus, we got an AFC East showdown. One team looking for answers.
9:46The other continues to steamroll squads offensively. Lance is actually going to fix what's ailing the Patriots ahead of the game against the Bills.

10:10Terms and conditions apply. All right, it was tough news from a commander's perspective.
10:14Dislocated elbow again for Jalon Daniels. Suffered that week, too.
10:17Said he doesn't have any concerns about re-injuring it again.
10:20He was a limited participant in practice for the second consecutive day today.
10:24A little uncertain right now if he plays Sunday in London against the Colts.
10:28If not, we get Marcus Mariota again. Here's Daniels.
10:31Feels good. Feels good to be back. And, you know, it's taking it day by day.
10:35Are you surprised at any part that you'll be able to possibly be back out there this soon?
10:40What you think? No? I don't think so. Nah.
10:43I'm not surprised. No, everything I went through, you know, everybody said I'd be good to go if I'm able to go out there on Sunday.
10:51But, again, just taking it day by day. Look, the camera.
10:54See those two cameras up there? The guy on the right, he's recording us.
10:58Look, he's waving at us. You see him? He's looking at us, getting everything we're saying.
11:03So, see jackpot? Look right above the K. 3-14, right?
11:06Yeah, 3-14. See? I know. I know. So I can or for him.
11:10Yes, you are on camera. I'll give a wave, too.
11:12He's one of the studs in the NFL. Can Bonham for the Indianapolis Colts is with us right now.
11:18Man, I see you having fun on and off the field.
11:21You're certainly not shy. We didn't even show some of the celebrations that you've had in that montage.
11:27Because, I mean, like, the dance moves are strong.
11:29You've got the backflips. I've got to know, like, when you're celebrating on the field, are these just freestyle routines?
11:35Or are these well-thought-out, planned in advance? These are planned for years.
11:39Going back to high school, going back to... There's one clip where I was practicing one of my dance moves that I did last year back in...
11:46In 2015, I was practicing when I was still in high school because I saw a video on the internet of it.
11:53So these things are very well-thought-out because I want my celebrations to be unique.
11:57Just because on defense, you know, it's rare to make a play and it's hard to get turnovers.
12:02So in my mind, if the offense can do all these crazy dances and everything, it's even harder for defense to make a play.
12:09So when I get a turnover, I make sure that it's memorable.
12:13And I want every single interception or turnover in my career to have a memory attached to it with what celebration I did.
12:20I love everything that you're saying because you're exactly right for what you do on the defensive side.
12:25This is not every moment where we're talking about turnover generation.
12:28So you celebrate those moments in a meaningful way.
12:31International flair. Going to Europe. Here we go, London.
12:33You have some experience, man. Fourth international game for you.
12:36You guys have the commanders. Explain to me, because it's not your first rodeo.
12:40What's unique about these trips and having success over there compared to what happens in the States?
12:45The most unique thing is the lack of routine that you have.
12:49You know, we're all creatures of habit going through our whole life.
12:52We have a super tight regimented routine that every single hour is accounted for with something, whether it's treatment, practice, your extra work.
12:59So that's really the toughest thing about going overseas is because now you don't have your typical massage therapist or your treatment, your dry needling, acupuncture people.
13:07So you kind of have to go out of your routine.
13:10But for me personally, I think that's the fun of it because it feels like you're out there exploring, doing different things.
13:17So for me, I love these games. One passion.
13:19My main passion is traveling and seeing the world.
13:22And that's what I do in the offseason. So being able to play football and travel is like a two and one for me.
13:29So I think you enjoy it once you get out of your routine and just enjoy it.
13:34Is there extra juice for you? Because I'm looking at those stats, 17 tackles a pick, a sack three of those games.
13:41Like every game in the league is big. But like wow is right.
13:44Like you're having success internationally. Is there something specific that you attributed to because you're not getting your normal dry needling and acupuncture like you normally would?
13:52Yeah, for me. Yeah, for me, I just let go of all routine that I see it as like complete.
13:58I'm on vacation. But obviously knowing it's a business thing, but just feeling the enjoyment.
14:03For me, whenever I'm having fun and feeling loose, that's when I play the best football.
14:07So when I'm overseas, I feel like, you know, playing in front of different fans, in front of people that are super
14:14excited to see football because it's not every day that they get football.
14:17And they don't get 17 weeks of it out there.
14:20They get a few select weeks where they have NFL teams playing over there.
14:25So I feel like it's just all the energy just piles up.
14:28And I feel like I'm on vacation when I'm there as far as just the energy and the enjoyment.
14:34It's still a business trip. You're still out there to win.
14:37But for me, the enjoyment that I have playing for international fans and being able to be in a different country traveling,
14:43that's when I feel so loose and just ready to go out there and have fun.
14:48And when I have fun, that's when I make the most plays.
14:52So those are always my favorite games, being able to play overseas.
14:55Because like I said, I feel like I'm just out there just having fun on vacation.
15:00You guys made some plays. You got to win against the Houston Texans.
15:04I think about 4 of 11 on third down, 233 yards allowed.
15:07And I think it was like five three and outs against the Texans.
15:11What was working well for this unit compared to what we saw those first couple weeks?
15:16I think we had a really intentional week of practice.
15:18I like the way that we prepared the first three weeks.
15:22But we saw that what we did, taking our meetings, our walkthrough, our practice and everything to the game.
15:27The first two weeks, we weren't taking every single detail out there on Sunday.
15:31So I think this week was the first week that we put it all together when we had a great practice, a great week of practice.
15:39And on top of that, we had good execution going into the game.
15:43And I think that was our best game we've had in a while, even looking back last year, just as far as
15:49the game plan coming to life and us players doing our job when it came to Sunday.
15:54Because the coaches did a really good job preparing us.
15:57And I think when we came out on the field, everything was firing because we did exactly what we did on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, walkthrough Saturday.
16:05And we did every single thing that we did there and brought it to Sunday.
16:09And that's why we had success. Cam, before we let you get going, man, I think I saw every one of your
16:16reps in college when you were at Cal. I've seen so many of the plays that you've been able to make.
16:22You mentioned your lifestyle, traveling. It's a passion for you.
16:25If you follow Cam on social media, you can see some of those trips.
16:29You are such a proud representative of the Filipino heritage.
16:32I see the flags and the whole thing. I know you've traveled to Asia.
16:36You're going to Europe for an NFL game. What would it mean for you and you think the Asian community to have a game played on that continent?
16:44That would be life-changing for a lot of people.
16:47Because during my time when I live in the Philippines in the offseason and able to do football camps and, you know,
16:53just meet the football community in all of Asia, going to different countries and just seeing the passion for football in Asia,
17:00I think being able to have a game, no matter what country in Asia it'll be, that'll change people's lives.
17:06Just knowing that football, especially with flag football being in the Olympics, I think it'll just wake people up that there's an
17:12international sport that's playing all around the world and that you can be a part of it.
17:17And I think that'll really wake people up to see a new dream in life.
17:21And I think in Asia there's so many passionate fans and people that stay up till 1 a.m.
17:27to start the early games. And it's tough for them to watch football, but I know so many people that stay up
17:33all night just to watch the game. So I know it'd be life-changing for us to be able to play a game out there.
17:40And I'm praying that it happens during my time in the league.
17:44I'll play up to 20 seasons if it can guarantee that I play a game in Asia.
17:49I'm with you, man. I'll make sure that my passport is ready.
17:52Would love to see this come to fruition. Cam, man, it was awesome watching you in college at Cal.
17:58Six years in the league. The plays, the dancing, the backflips, the whole thing.
18:02Have success the rest of the season. Stay healthy and good luck this weekend in London.
18:07Yes, sir. Thank you for having me. God, what a nice dude, too.
18:10And certainly a huge matchup for that Colts squad against the commanders.
18:14Still a little uncertainty around that quarterback spot, but there's a slew of tremendous games.
18:18One that certainly has got a whole lot of intrigue, at least in my mind.
18:23Rams and Eagles just looking like a fun matchup where I think there's just questions around this Philadelphia team.
18:28That said, not my segment. It's Lance Irline. So most intriguing matchups I know for you.
18:33Patriots, Bills, for a lot of reasons here in New England.
18:36The offensive questions right now are pretty abundant. And Lance, I've got to be honest with you, man, keeping pace against Josh
18:43Allen and the Bills, that is going to be a stiff challenge for him.
18:47It's going to be really stiff. I mean, look, the key is you've got to relax.
18:51Find a way to help Drake May relax. Drake May has played bad football dating back to last year.
18:57It's really a problem right now. And the best way to do that is run the football better.
19:02Drake is not seeing the field well. He's making bad decisions.
19:05He's making bad throws. The running game really was stifled last week by the Jaguars.
19:10I think the best thing you can do is get the ball to the edges, away from Deion Walker, and start running the ball outside the tackles.
19:18If you can do that, you can have some success.
19:21And that means Travion Henderson and Ramondre Stevenson are really going to have to play great games.
19:26Josh Allen wasn't great last week. No touchdowns, two interceptions.
19:29He showed that he was mortal. The problem for the Patriots is that this guy, James Cook, was a monster.
19:34James Cook went absolutely bananas last week. We know he can do it.
19:38Over 150 yards rushing. So, you know, the problem is right now to beat the Bills, you've got a running game.
19:44You've got a great quarterback. Right now the Patriots can't say they've got a dual threat.
19:49They've got to get the running game going to take pressure off the quarterback, Drake May.
19:54Lance, you know this better than anyone. New Year starts.
19:57Doesn't matter what happened last year. But I do think it's cool when you can carry over some of that success from a previous campaign.
20:04That's exactly what we're seeing from Trevor Lawrence. Do I dare say it?
20:08I was like, dude, we got Clemson Trevor now from the start of the season.
20:12Yeah. Seven touchdowns, two interceptions. He's doing what he needs to do.
20:16Very efficient work last week. You know, the numbers aren't sky high.
20:19Very few quarterback numbers are anymore with all the shell coverages you're seeing.
20:23But when he gets in the red zone, he has been a killer.
20:27I mean, he's been fantastic in the red zone.
20:30And he does a great job finding this last week.
20:33It was Jacoby Myers and it was Parker Washington who's been one of the real steals of the draft over the last few years.
20:40They've got Strange at tight end. The problem, I think, right now is going to be how do you stop the passing attack of Joe Burrow?
20:47This is going to be a great matchup. I'm very excited.
20:50You know, you look at the wide receivers at Jacksonville, it doesn't look all that dangerous.
20:55Then when you look across the field and you see Jamar Chase and you see Tee Higgins and you see the slew
21:02of receivers they have and pass catching tight ends, it's quite a dichotomy of how you want to win.
21:07One is efficient, one plays defense. But, you know, this is a big one for the Bengals.
21:12The Bengals last week, that's a tough loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
21:16And I think this game, for me, is my favorite game of the whole weekend.
21:20Yeah, I'm with you too. And I want to see because the Bengals defense has been relatively pretty good out of the
21:27gate here against this team in the Jags. To me, that's must-eat television.
21:30Meanwhile, we've got a Broncos team and a Niners squad.
21:33Both of these teams having some early success. San Francisco has been terrific.
21:37Fred Warner, though, made some comments about Bo Nix.
21:40He knows that this offense led by a second-year quarterback can definitely be dangerous.
21:44He's just a playmaker, right? His ability to extend out of the pocket, use his legs.
21:49I think he's faster than people think. His ability to throw the deep ball and make plays in that way.
21:54He's, I think, one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
21:58You know, I was watching power rankings this week here on the NFL Channel.
22:02Nick Shook had the Niners, the number one team in his power rankings.
22:06A lot of that, the play of Brock Purdy.
22:08But there's some, I don't want to say a red flag, but maybe that's the best way to describe it.
22:14Well, what concerns me for the 49ers, look, Purdy's played great.
22:17He's spreading the ball out. But first two weeks were a little easy for him.
22:22This last week, it was a struggle defensively. Jeremiah Love almost got to the 100-yard mark.
22:26He had 94 yards rushing. You also had a situation defensively where you had a hard time stopping Jacoby Brissett.
22:32He had almost 300 yards passing with two touchdowns, no takeaways.
22:35So the Niners' defense looked pretty normal last week.
22:38Now, the good thing is their offense continues to roll.
22:41And they've got an offense, you know, led by a quarterback, as I mentioned, who can spread it out.
22:47They've got an offense that's able to, you know, run the football with Christian McCaffrey.
22:51So the real key here, I think, is going to be can Bo Nix and the Broncos carry over that big fourth quarter that they had?
22:59Can they ride that momentum? And that momentum is quite something.
23:02That was a great game that we watched in the comeback win against the Rams.
23:06Can it carry over or can the Broncos jump on them or can the 49ers, rather, jump on them early?
23:12If they jump on Bo Nix early, I think this game is a boat race.
23:16And I think the 49ers go wire to wire with this one.
23:20Yeah, there's a part of me that totally agrees with you.
23:23And then I just see all these fourth quarter comebacks from Bo Nix and the Broncos.
23:28And I'm like, it's never over until it's over.
23:31They keep doing it. They absolutely do. Lance, you're the best man.
23:34Always appreciate your insight on all of these games.
23:37And I'm with you. Those are some terrific matchups that we're going to have.
23:41We're going to get treated for or with. Is it horror?
23:44You know where I'm going with that. Meanwhile, we do have some football tonight.
23:48Deshaun Watson. Guy's been leading some fourth quarter comebacks.
23:51How about a team that just has figured out ways to get it done?
23:55Can they get it done against the Steelers? Back here on NFL Report Wednesday night, the Panthers and Atrium Health teamed up
24:01to host a special dinner at Bank of America Stadium for the Levine Cancer patients and their devoted care teams.
24:07This is something that you're going to see across the NFL over the next couple of weeks or so.
24:13The Minnesota Vikings also taking part in the Crucial Catch program.
24:16Just an awesome cause from an NFL perspective. All right, time for some quick hits for you and your AFC Players of the Month.
24:23Your Kenneth Walker continues to be one of the most surprising pieces in the NFL, changing the complete complexion of the Kansas City Chiefs.
24:30Greater so once again, just a monster defensively. And then when I think about Brock Purdy, if you were paying attention, the
24:37number one fantasy quarterback this past week and Javon Holland always bringing that energy with game ceiling interception against the Tennessee Titans.
24:43All right, coming up in just a bit, we get a closer look at TNF.
24:47Bucky Brooks is already on the set. He's texting me, are you going to make it for the show?
24:53Buck, I got you. Game day preview. I got two minutes to go from this studio to the other one.
24:59We'll get you set for a huge matchup right here on the NFL channel.
25:03This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed Human.
