0:00This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed Human. Well in week number one we watched star players get hurt.
0:05The latest on who's in and who's out in week number two.
0:09Trust me, we're gonna help you set those fantasy rosters.
0:12Now we spent the offseason telling you why the Cowboys defense would be much improved with the new DC and new personnel.
0:18Time for take two against the commanders. We'll tell you who wins and what an absolutely monster debut for David Montgomery in a Houston uniform.
0:25He stops by to tell us about a three touchdown day and a grade on a possible new nickname for Knuckles.
0:31And welcome to a brand new edition of the NFL Report.
0:35I'm Mike Yam. My buddy Nick Shook is gonna be joining me in just a bit.
0:39We'll have a little bit more on Josh Allen and an epic performance on Thursday Night Football.
0:44But we got some news as it pertains to Monday Night Football.
0:48It's actually some good news and some not so great news from a Rams perspective.
0:52We will start with the good in our latest headlines.
0:55Sean McVay said he was hopeful Aaron Donald would make his season debut against the Giants on Monday night.
1:01Now McVay said Thursday the future Hall of Famer chomping at the bit to play.
1:05Donald spoke to the media today. Could 99 be out there on the fields?
1:09That's the plan. So two practices a day, have another practice tomorrow and then we'll see.
1:14But feeling good. Yep. That's your plan or that's the Rams plan?
1:17As far as... The plan on Monday night? I think that's the all-bought plan.
1:21We have a conversation, we figure it out. But I'm feeling really good.
1:25I feel a lot better now that I got more practice under my belt instead of one.
1:30So, you know, kind of getting in the groove of things.
1:33Understanding everything a lot better out there. Playing a lot more free.
1:37A lot more loose and looking more like myself than me.
1:40So, yeah. Looking like himself, that's not a good thing for the New York Giants.
1:44Sarah Barshop who covers the team for ESPN putting this out on social media.
1:48Their wide receiver Puka Nakua added to the injury report with a hip injury.
1:53Did not practice on Friday. So, some more details as they unfold throughout the course of the weekend.
1:58And of course, we'll have more on game day preview on Monday.
2:01A fresh edition of that. Meanwhile, Nico Collins officially limited on Wednesday.
2:05Didn't practice on Thursday. Did not practice today either.
2:07Had seven catches, 75 yards and a touchdown. He has been dealing with that hamstring injury.
2:12They certainly could use him in that lineup though.
2:15The Texans, a different offense with a guy like Nico Collins to pair up with CJ Stroud.
2:20Kevin O'Connell announced Friday that Kyla Murray out for Sunday's game against the Bears.
2:24Still going through concussion protocol. Carson Wentz will get the start and it is definitely a special one for him in the Windy City.
2:31It's kind of fitting to play, to start my 100th game with the team I grew up cheering for.
2:36And the circumstances being what they are and all the things.
2:39So, I'm very blessed for that. Hopefully, we can get in the wind column on that too.
2:44They're a good team. Obviously, they put up a lot of points offensively last week.
2:49They do a lot of good things defensively as well.
2:52They don't do a ton of crazy stuff. This D coordinator has been around for a long time.
2:57A lot of respect for him. Gone against him before.
3:00You know, they have good players. I think we have good players too.
3:04So, I'm excited to see the line of scrimmage kind of be kind of where I think it's won and lost, I think more than anything.
3:11And so, excited to see that mentality from our guys up front to kind of get after these guys and kind of
3:18open up some things down the field. Kind of fired up about that matchup.
3:22Nick and I will discuss that one in more detail coming up here on the NFL Reports.
3:27Joe Burrow, practicing full today, says, quote, he feels good.
3:30All systems go. As of right now, according to his head coach, Zach Taylor, Burrow threw for 254 in a touchdown against the Browns in week number one.
3:38They will get that Texans defense that looked a little vulnerable against the Buffalo Bills.
3:42But to be fair, the Bills clearly have Superman on their team.
3:46So, maybe it's just a matter of going up against Josh Allen.
3:49How about this? The quarterback room in Atlanta. This thing has been a revolving door.
3:53Not exactly sure what the situation was going to be at the start of the season.
3:58Well, for week number two, here we go. Cooper Rush confirmed by Kevin Stefanski.
4:02He will be the starting quarterback, both Tua and Michael Penix.
4:05Penix, both those guys have been dinged up. A little more injury news.
4:09This for Brock Bowers. Doubtful against the Chargers on the practice field for the first time since having knee surgery 10 days
4:16ago, but doesn't look likely that he's going to be able to play.
4:19Michael Mayer will get the start for Bowers. He had six catches, 32 yards in week number one.
4:25Zay Flowers. I was kind of hoping just because this is going to sound selfish because he's on my fantasy team.
4:31I thought he'd give it a go. The guy was all world.
4:34First half, buck 50, touchdown, hamstring injury. Back at practice on Friday, but the team officially listing him as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Saints.
4:42I know what I'm doing after that show, and that is resetting my fantasy lineup.
4:46And I should be paying attention to this graphic here because, well, all of us should, because odds are you probably own one of these guys.
4:54I think on the right column, Chris Alave, who was coming off a career performance dealing with that hamstring injury.
5:00He is questionable. It is definitely one of those stories that we will continue to monitor here on the NFL channel.
5:06TNF, you like some football on a Thursday night?
5:08I do. And that's exactly what we got. Highmark Stadium, $2 billion.
5:12That's where that'll get you. Josh Allen getting all the feels running out of that tunnel with this team already on top
5:18seven, nothing because of one of his touchdowns. Here's another one, a 43 yard touchdown to Josh Palmer.
5:24Allen threw for 248 and three tugs in this game.
5:26And believe me, he was not done just yet.
5:29There's more from Allen ripping this one at Dalton Kincaid.
5:32The tight end has been like gangbusters in these first two weeks.
5:35225 receiving yards for two weeks, the fifth most by a tight end in the Super Bowl area.
5:41He had seven catches, 95 yards in this one.
5:43And just for good measure, Allen putting the finishing touches on this one.
5:47And Buffalo Bills, they go on to win. And yeah, Superman, five touchdowns total in this game.
5:52You know, you have to take your take, take advantage of your opportunities.
5:56And we did that early. Felt like, you know, we had to step up the entirety of the game.
6:01But again, they still clawed and fought their way back and made it a game.
6:06And like I said, anytime you're going against a team like that, you just have to put your head down.
6:12The score doesn't matter and take it one drive at a time.
6:15He's a great player. Man, they had a great game plan.
6:18And yeah, they got after us today for sure.
6:21You know, that was not good enough. Not good enough.
6:24Things will definitely be changed. I don't know what that is necessarily, but I know there will be changes.
6:29We're not going to keep banging our head against the wall.
6:33You know what I mean? Makes that overtime win that they got in week number one even more important because you don't want to drop 0-2.
6:40So they avoided that because of that week one win.
6:43My buddy Nick Shook is with me. I don't know if I'm crazy thinking this.
6:47Josh Allen, he's got an MVP. It almost feels like with Joe Brady, there's another level, another dimension that's been unlocked.
6:54You see in that? Absolutely. I mean, how do you overcome or how do you do better than four touchdowns a week one?
7:00You do five. You score five in week two.
7:03You put your success rate near 60% as an offense.
7:06You go touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, punt, touchdown in your first six possessions.
7:10They could do no wrong in this game. What was lost in the footnotes of this?
7:14James Cook, 101 rushing yards by halftime. They are a machine offensively.
7:18They have taken it to another level under Joe Brady.
7:21I'm not exactly sure why, how we can figure out why they're this good, but I can find some clues in their personnel variety.
7:28The distribution between 11, 12 and 13 personnel was nearly even.
7:3123 plays in 11, 21 plays in 12, 20 and 13.
7:34They're multiple. And if they can come out in heavy personnel packages and threaten the run, they still have Josh Allen to run the boot.
7:41And as we saw with the two rushing scores, he's still very versatile as a quarterback.
7:46So they can hit you from all angles. They're a great offense.
7:50What about defensively? That was still my biggest question heading into the season.
7:53Houston was able to score some points. Lions were able to make a little bit of a run.
7:59Yeah, two straight weeks in which they've given up 30 plus points.
8:02That is concerning for this defense. But overall, when you have an offense like this and it's kind of the way the
8:09game goes, you're not as worried about it as you would be with a team that couldn't score as much.
8:14Over the long haul of this season, I would like to see them better.
8:18They did lose that Oliver in warm ups for this game.
8:22So they were down a little bit. They were a little thin up front.
8:26But I think that they'll still be one of the best teams in the NFL at least through two weeks.
8:32Can I ask you a personal question? Yes. The scoring drive deal there.
8:35Did you practice that? Because you hit that on the head, man.
8:39Well, we may have done it last night on NFL Daily.
8:42We may have done it again today. Well, well done on the repetition there.
8:46You got more from Nick coming up here in just a couple of minutes on the NFL report.
8:51Meanwhile, the international games. And I know we just talked about Aaron Donald week.
8:55Number one wasn't out there against the San Francisco 49ers.
8:58A record nine international games. That was the debut in Melbourne.
9:02But we still got a whole big slate still to come.
9:05Roger Goodell said yesterday futures bright for international teams.
9:07We all know where this is heading. How soon will we have a franchise overseas somewhere?
9:12And where would it be? You know, that's tough to say.
9:15I think if we continue to grow and continue to get the kind of reaction, I do think a franchise will be international at some point in time.
9:23I think Europe is the most likely for a lot of reasons.
9:27One, the length of time we've been playing there.
9:30But also, the scheduling is going to be a lot easier.
9:33Australia might create a few complications for us. But I also believe we could have more than one team.
9:38Which I think, yeah, ultimately, the support is there.
9:41Two more teams, okay. It's got a couple more squads out there.
9:44I think Nick and I would volunteer to go a little more international.
9:48Caleb Williams, he's got at least two passing touchdowns in eight straight games, including the playoffs.
9:53Guy has been on a tear. His Bears get the Vikings team ready to bring the heat with Brian Flores as their DC.
10:00No one has blitzed more than Minnesota since last season.
10:02Coach calls this mental war when you go versus him.
10:05And that's what it is. You've got to be able to go out there and, you know, things are going to happen.
10:12And bad things are going to happen. You've got to be able to fight back and stay steady.
10:17And so that's one of the biggest things is not allowing his defense and all of that to flush to you and get in your mind.
10:25That's one of the firsts. And then after that, you know, you stay steady and things like that.
10:30Now it's time to go, you know, make plays and get completions.
10:33And, you know, when the big ones show up, you know, take them and find them.
10:38You know, my job is, you know, part of my job is, you know, when those things happen is finding the big ones.
10:45And then, you know, when it's not, it's finding the completions.
10:48And so that's a big challenge for us, myself, this week.
10:51And, you know, I'm going to take it up and, you know, we'll see how it turns out on Sunday.
10:57You don't look down. I know Kyler Murray is not going to be out there, but Carson Wentz and the Vikings were
11:03able to figure it out in week number one.
11:06Who are you picking in this game? I'm going with the Chicago Bears.
11:10And that's not just because they put up so much offense in week one, but also because Ben Johnson is very familiar with the Brian Flores defense.
11:18Statistically over the last few seasons, when they've gone under center against this defense, they've averaged 1.5 more yards per play than
11:24pretty much every other offense that has faced the Flores defense.
11:27And that pressure that overwhelmed Jordan Love so much in week one, I think the Bears will be better equipped for it.
11:34A reason that they can be better equipped for it?
11:37Going quick. They've averaged more than twice as many yards per carry on the ground, a rushing attack that people don't pay
11:43a lot of attention to in Chicago when they go quick as opposed to a normal pacing.
11:48So I think they're in a good spot. It's going to be a battle.
11:52Low scoring, probably a lot lower scoring than last week, but it's going to be a good game.
11:57You know, you mentioned the familiarity there. I'll take it a step further with Ben Johnson.
12:02He's five and one against Brian Flores defenses for whatever that's worth.
12:05I know everyone's been talking about the 59 points.
12:08I'm with you. I'm rolling with the Bears in this game, and it has less to do with the arm of Caleb,
12:15who by the way, through just 29 passing attempts in that game to get to 59 points, it's the rushing attack.
12:21I mean, it's a three headed monster. Swift out there, Manunga, Caleb Williams.
12:24These guys combined for 289 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns.
12:28I don't think they get to those totals against this Minnesota defense, but Caleb's had success against the Blitz.
12:33And if they're going to be bringing that heat, I think he's going to be able to figure it out.
12:39So I'm with you. I'm going to be rolling with the Chicago Bears, and you and I have done fairly well with the week one selections for us.
12:47We're across the board in agreement on a lot of these early games.
12:51The one that I hedged on was Packers Jets.
12:54Okay. Going back and forth on that one. That's fair because I think we have a little bit too much similarity here.
13:00We got to meet before we do this in the future and get some variety here in our picks.
13:06I know. Hytham sends the email, our producer, and we just respond to it.
13:10So I actually don't really know. You don't want to think like me.
13:13Trust me. Whatever's happening between the ears is not necessarily always a positive thing.
13:17Nick, more from you coming up in just a bit.
13:20CJ takes the snap, steps out to his right.
13:23Pits, Montgomery, touchdown, Houston. The hat trick for Montgomery.
13:26Montgomery, his third TD of the day as Stroud finds him.
13:29And the Texans can take the lead with the extra point.
13:32Joining us on the NFL Report now, Texans running back David Montgomery.
13:36David, how are you, man? Thanks for joining us.
13:38Great, great. I appreciate you for having me on.
13:41Hey, of course. We appreciate you being here. I know you've got better things to do after a loss, and it's on to Cincinnati.
13:48We'll get to your hometown team coming up in a second.
13:51But if we could, even in a loss, I have to imagine it felt good to make a debut after a trade
13:57and score three touchdowns and remind people, yeah, I'm still here.
14:01I'm sure I still got this. Yeah, it was cool, but you know, it didn't really feel that cool or that good.
14:07Like when we don't come out with a win and I didn't put perform play as good as I went until I
14:13got left a few things out there for my O-line for the rest of my guys on the team.
14:19But I'll improve first game, but it was cool, but we didn't get the win.
14:23Next up, not in any way an easy game, a team to beat the Buccaneers in week one and your hometown team at that.
14:30David Montgomery, what's it going to mean to face your Cincinnati Bengals coming to town week two?
14:35This is another game to me, quite frankly, just preparing the same way that I always prepare, going against another great defense.
14:42They made a lot of improvements this offseason. And so, yeah, it'll be exciting.
14:46It'll be good to see where we are and see if we can get back, get on track to get our first W.
14:52So in Detroit, we know you had Sonic and Knuckles, your Knuckles.
14:56Now there's Woody. Woody and Knuckles, I guess, fits.
14:59Woody Marks. Is that, have you guys branded yourself yet with a new nickname for the backfield duo?
15:04No, that ain't really how it worked. You know, you never can make your own nickname.
15:09You know, they kind of, you let the fans kind of do that.
15:12And, you know, they'll do that when we earn it.
15:15Me and him have to earn it together and we haven't done that.
15:19We just getting started. So, you know, whatever the Houstonians decide the name is, we'll rock with.
15:24Okay, so you haven't, no one's stopping you in the supermarket yet giving you a nickname.
15:29No one's tried that? No one's workshopping this stuff with you?
15:32Not yet, no. Okay, let's workshop this. David, play along with me.
15:35You have played, and I'm taking Matt Nagy out of this, okay?
15:39But you have played for like two of the most jacked coaches in the league.
15:43You got Dan Campbell, who's 50. You got D'Amico, who's 42.
15:46Could D'Amico as a linebacker right now cover Dan Campbell as a tight end?
15:50Like, who would win a rep with those two?
15:53Yeah, I think Coach Campbell would say Coach Lyons could cover him.
15:57You know, but it'd be a good bout between those two.
16:00I think out of 10 reps, they go 5-5.
16:02Okay, what about the Oklahoma drill? Could we do that?
16:05Like actually get them button heads? Yeah, I don't know.
16:08I wouldn't even want to see what that looks like.
16:11I mean, he's 50, right? Like I'm 50 so I could joke about it.
16:15I don't know. I could joke about old men.
16:18He's not a normal 50. No, I know. That's, I think it's a good battle.
16:22Hypo-fet. Yeah. It's an off-field. It would be good.
16:25I'm not suggesting they're gonna wrestle at midfield coming up on Sunday, although that would make the game fun.
16:30You are here by the way, David, and we're happy that you are.
16:34Thank you for taking time out on off day for Scouting America, which was I know such a huge part in your life growing up.
16:42Tell me about how that impacted you and really put you here today as the successful NFL running back and obviously family man as well that you are.
16:50Scouting has been something that's kind of driven me in a direction of progress and positivity as I'm going from a young
16:56man into now a man who has his own child and being able to show my son the right way to do
17:02things and how to carry himself in a moral sense and just as a human.
17:07And I think, you know, Scouting is such an unappreciated thing that more people should get exposed to and more people should try.
17:14I was a Boy Scout as well, so I totally get you.
17:17And I understand how, you know, Scouting is great as well in this digital world where kids never look up from these.
17:23It gives you human contact. It gives you something to actually go out there and see the world and learn the world.
17:30Speaking of digital, you have Ms. Pac-Man behind you.
17:33You any good at that? That's my last question.
17:35Yeah, I do. That's my son running. My son loved Ms.
17:38Pac-Man. I got an NFL blitz on the other side.
17:41That's what I play. Okay. Yeah, NFL blitz. I'm pretty good at both.
17:45Next time you're in town, we got to do that.
17:48David Montgomery for Scouting America. Congratulations on the three touchdowns week one.
17:51I get it. It's a loss. Good luck against your hometown team.
17:55I know that means something to you. Hope to talk to you down the line, David.
18:00Thank you, sir. Thank you. An impressive performance from David Montgomery.
18:03I think he's probably pretty good at Pac-Man. If I had to guess.
18:07How about these uniforms? To me, I kind of like them.
18:10Cardinals going to be back in their NFL Nike rivalry jerseys this weekend when they host.
18:14The champs. Jacoby Brissett knows it doesn't matter who's actually starting for Seattle, even though we know it's going to be Drew Locke.
18:21Instead, he's thinking about that dark side defense. They're tough, you know, and there's no sugarcoating it.
18:26So obviously looking at the game last year, you know, they beat us bad.
18:30I'm sorry, but they beat us bad. You know what I mean?
18:34So it's more so from the standpoint of like you can watch the film to see how physical those guys are, you
18:40know, and you watched the last game from them.
18:43It just reconfirms how physical they are, how tough they are.
18:46You know, and it's going to take a 60 minute, you know, it's going to be a bloodbath.
18:51A nice week one win for Arizona. How about the Arctic white jerseys for the Dallas Cowboys?
18:56They'll rock those against the commanders. Both of these teams coming off losses.
19:00Both would love to get a win in week number two in this NFC East showdown.
19:05Now it's only week two at this point, but Dax already having to answer questions from the doubters.
19:10Yeah, I mean, it's a long season. I love our fans, but you know, I don't necessarily feel I need to speak to that fan, you know?
19:18Sorry for them. If they're a real fan, they'll stick with it.
19:21They'll trust it. They'll believe in it. And at the end of the day, we just said it is one game.
19:27And yeah, it sucks. It's the first game. Nobody's more pissed than myself and these guys in here.
19:33We didn't want to start 0-1. We're as excited as any fan out there about the offseason and things we've done in the training camp.
19:40So turn that energy and come to the game this Sunday and be as loud as you can.
19:45And we appreciate it. There was a lot of hype heading into the season regarding this Dallas Cowboys squad.
19:51It felt like this unit was going to be improved on the defensive side.
19:55What do you make of what you saw in week one as you look at the commanders here in week two?
20:01I make that I had my heart broken by the Cowboys defense in week one because this is a unit that I
20:07believed in with the reconstruction, the offseason, all this new talent.
20:10Christian Parker as the DC all coming together. And they just didn't show up in week one.
20:15They gave up multiple passes to the flats. They allowed the Giants to go on some long drives that really just kind
20:22of squeeze the life out of them in the second half.
20:25And ultimately, they came up short against the team that a lot of us probably expected them to beat.
20:31So how do they adjust going into week two?
20:33Well, they need to blitz more because Washington's offensive line struggled to protect Jane Daniels last week.
20:38They gave up a QB pressure percentage of over 50 last week.
20:42And the Cowboys only really generated pressure on Jackson Dart when they blitz.
20:45Now, when you blitz, you also give up some space because you are giving up a defender because you're dedicating him to the blitz.
20:52So they're going to have to be very much more dialed into their responsibilities than they were in week one in order to win this game.
21:00All right. So you're picking the Cowboys. I'm going to pick them as well.
21:04I'm glad you brought up the defensive side because for as much as that's been the conversation offensively, this is the number two offense a season ago.
21:12And they struggled. The fact that CD and Pickens were out on the field together and healthy and they combined for eight
21:18catches in 72 yards against this Giants team. They got to be a whole lot better, especially if the defense is going to have those types of issues.
21:27It's the offensive side of the football that's supposed to carry them.
21:30I think it gets done in week number two against the commanders.
21:34And by the way, this is a really important matchup since division realignment in 2002.
21:38The teams that have started owing to in divisional games went on to make the playoffs under 10 percent of the time.
21:44There's a need for that team to get it done.
21:47And just to recap the story, as you look at all of our picks, the only one that we differ on Giants and Rams top story.
21:55Aaron Donald, he says the plan is to play in Monday Night Football.
21:59Pukunakua banged up. I'm rolling with the G-men. I think it's a little personal for you.
22:03Yeah, just a little bit. By the way, I think on another show I said Rams.
22:08So on one of our shows on the NFL channel, I will be right about that.

22:32All right. Time for some quick hitters for you.
22:35I actually think this is kind of a cool comment.
22:38Ravens defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver on Tyler Shuck. I was impressed with him last year as a rookie.
22:43Point is, he's a poor man's Josh Allen. That's a compliment.
22:46Like we talk about Josh Allen as a superhero and Tyler was late in that game.
22:51I know that was a loss in week number one, but did throw for career high 410 yards and three touchdowns.
22:57Nice to see you have Kamara ready to go dealing with that MCL sprain.
23:01It was a little bit of patchwork in that backfield for the Saints.
23:05Travis Achan, Kendra Miller, both those guys, nine carries apiece.
23:08This is interesting news. ESPN's work prior putting this out on social.
23:11Joey Porter out against the Patriots. This is like a running theme here with this contract situation should be noted to Michael Pittman.
23:18Didn't practice Thursday or Friday. Questionable. That's potentially a problem there.
23:21One more thing for you. This grabbed our attention.
23:24You're like, you know, it's Highmark Stadium. It's $2 billion deal.
23:27I get it. But the fans, Bill's Mafia. This is what makes that fan base so awesome.
23:32How about the tattoo? The Josh Allen tattoo, 17 on the back.
23:35That is just wild. There's a part of me that almost doubts this.
23:39Like, is this a real tattoo? Is it a Sharpie?
23:42The one thing that I will say for the guy who doesn't have any ink on his body, I appreciate the fandom.
23:49I don't know if I would go that far for my favorite player.
23:52That's why that dude deserves like box seats all the time.
23:56We'll see you Sunday. We got game day preview at 1130 a.m.
23:59Eastern time. We'll get you set for a week to slate and it's going to be awesome.
24:04This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed human.
