0:00You know what? I'm not afraid to say it.
0:03It is okay to be wrong, and there were a lot of wrong opinions about this Broncos team last year.
0:09It wasn't that long ago when people said the game had passed Sean Payton by, and Vance Joseph too.
0:15Remember, when he gave up 70 to Miami, people thought he was going to be fired the next day.
0:21And don't even get me started on Bo Nix.
0:24Could there possibly be a more overrated quarterback in the eyes of the average NFL fan?
0:29Truly, this was not a good team. It was a lucky one.
0:33That was a remarkably common opinion. But like I said, it's okay to be wrong.
0:38Because to me, the best part of admitting when you're wrong is that once you do, you're immediately right.
0:44Nix, in zone bound, pulled in, touchdown Broncos! A little word of advice as we start the 2026 season.
0:50Maybe don't doubt the Broncos this time, and just let yourself be correct.
0:54Welcome to the Bootleg Football Podcast. I'm Brett Coleman.
0:57That's EJ Snyder. And today, we're going to do the impossible.
1:01We're going to have a nuanced discussion about if Bo Nix is good.
1:05EJ, are you ready to get yelled at? Yes, by both sides of the aisle.
1:10By folks we've influenced to believe that quarterbacks are superhuman, and that they are everything to a team, and also that it's a team sport.
1:18And both things can be true. So I'm excited, because we're going to dig into the whys and the hows.
1:24And the thing I'm most excited about is it comes from a patron question.
1:29Like, this is, again, questions from folks that watch the series and are invested and say, Hey, can you tell me why
1:36it looks like this, but I hear this? And can you help me reconcile those two things?
1:41And we're going to do that today. So we're going to start off, as usual, recapping 2025.
1:47What happened? How did it happen? And then we'll dig into all the nitty gritty about what the hell we watched in the Eagles and the Giants games.
1:56Because those, I think those kind of established a narrative about what the Broncos were last year that I'm not entirely sure was accurate.
2:03Again, great team. Like, I really do think that they could have challenged the Seahawks in the Super Bowl better than the Patriots could have.
2:11I thought they matched up a little bit better than New England.
2:15So, you know, if Bo Nix didn't get hurt last year, very easily could have gone to the Super Bowl.
2:22I really do think it's an elite, elite team.
2:24But the national perception of how they won and why they won, to me, is a little off.
2:30So we'll recap 2025, then get into that, then talk about everything they've done in 2026 to ideally be even better.
2:37And when we talk about national narratives, I think the national narrative on the Broncos was off for several reasons.
2:43Again, this was an elite team. It was a 14-win team.
2:47We've been saying it all summer. It was incredibly difficult to win 14 games in the NFL in any year.
2:53And they did it in a not fluky way at all.
2:57They did it in a very strong way because they were a strong team, because they were well-coached, because they outplayed their opponents.
3:04This wasn't a turnover-based organization. This was a solid football team on both sides of the ball, wrecking other teams all the way throughout the year.
3:12And they came up a little bit short. And the national narrative was like, well, yeah, they're all right.
3:19No, they were great. They were 14-3, first in the division, 8-1 at home, 6-2 on the road.
3:24Didn't matter where they were playing. Last five games, when you want to be strong, they were down the stretch, 4-1.
3:31And again, came up just a tick short in the playoffs because they lost their starting quarterback.
3:37Again, with the narrative that the quarterback's so important.
3:39Oh, why do we do this? Anyways, the effectiveness summary.
3:43How did they do that? Everything is true at the same time, EJ.
3:47That's the theme of today's show. Don't listen to the first part.
3:51Just listen to the second part. Oh, the effectiveness summary.
3:54The way we do this for power score. And again, we've had some power scores this week that lied.
4:00This power score is, I would say, quite truthful.
4:03Passing EPA per play. Rushing EPA per play. Defense against the pass and the rush.
4:08Points scored and points allowed. Six ranks. We assign them their league rank where they finished 1-32.
4:13Add those up. Divide by six. That gives us a raw score.
4:17Then we stack the raw scores. And that's where they come in, in terms of power score.
4:22Generally, I will say, usually for somewhere between 28-30 teams a year, it is quite accurate in terms of where they finished,
4:29in terms of how they looked on film. And this one is quite accurate.
4:34Passing EPA per play. 10th. Rushing EPA per play.
4:3714th. It's top half. It's almost top 10. Pass defense.
4:40They shined. One of their best ranks on the board.
4:43They were sixth best in the NFL. Defense against the rush.
4:47They were tied for 13th. Again, we haven't had a rank lower than 14th so far.
4:52And we're four in. Points scored. 14th. Points allowed.
4:55An elite scoring defense. Top three scoring defense. They were third in the NFL.
4:59So 10, 14, 6. Tied for 13th, 14th, and third.
5:02Add all those up. Your raw score is... 10.
5:05Again, lower is better. You want to be number one in everything.
5:09Nobody is. But that put them fifth overall. And when you look at how the teams shook out and finished, that's pretty darn accurate.
5:17And even then, by the end of the season, they felt better than a top five team.
5:22Right? They kind of felt like a top four, maybe even top three team.
5:27In fact, the only teams I think by championship weekend, again, if Bo Nix was healthy, the only teams I think I
5:34would have taken straight up against the Broncos were the top two teams in the NFC, which we're going to get to next week.
5:41The Rams and the Seahawks. So that's how good they are.
5:45But again, there is this national perception about the most important player in the organization, Bo Nix, that I think makes people
5:52kind of expect a regression to the mean this year.
5:55Like, I've seen a lot of people say, oh, yeah, it could be 10 wins, maybe 11 for various reasons.
6:02You know, people expect a big bounce back from the Chiefs.
6:05People, you know, if the Chargers can stay healthy, they're everybody's favorite 13-win team on paper.
6:10And so I feel like Denver is kind of getting forgotten.
6:14And a lot of it is because of what Spencer Post sent in for us.
6:19This is a patron note. Again, every single episode we have, our patrons kind of help guide us along how we write
6:26these episodes and research for these episodes, whether it's with notes or questions or anything like that.
6:31And Spencer, I think, kind of cut to the core of the consternation in Broncos country this offseason about not getting respect for being a 14-win team.
6:40Spencer says, hey, guys, I think I've ridden with you through all of these since your first time doing a mock draft
6:47with Connor and Trev over at NFL SE, which I want to say was like 2023?
6:52A couple of years ago, easily. It's been a while, right?
6:55So thank you for sticking with us, Spencer. Now, for my Broncos-centric question, can you please explain to me why NFL GMs,
7:02head coaches, and fans all believe Bo Nix is a bad QB, but my eyes tell me he's a good QB.
7:09Please help me understand why the perception exists that he's the 20th best NFL quarterback and not the 12th best NFL quarterback.
7:16A couple things here. Number one, if Bo Nix is, let's just say, rated the 20th quarterback in the NFL, that's not bad.
7:24Bad is if you're 30th, right? If you're staring down the barrel of like a Dylan Gabriel season, that's bad.
7:30And I think, you know, people have this warped perception of if you're lower than 12, it means you're bad.
7:36If you're top 12, it means you're good. And there's this like black and white denomination between you have to be in
7:43the top 12 or your quarterback isn't worth anything.
7:46You might as well move on. And that's half the reason why, you know, most first round picks at quarterback are seen as failures.
7:54Like even if you get somebody who's solid, if they're not a top 12 guy, then you have to move on.
8:01Because why would you pay somebody who's not even in the top 12?
8:05Kind of like divorcing. Divorcing the quality of the player from the value in the market.
8:10And it just causes all of these misalignments and discourse, I guess is the best way you could put it.
8:16Where you see a quarterback who's the 20th best in the sport.
8:20He's making no money on a rookie contract. And there's people who wrongly say, ah, Broncos got to figure out their future
8:27because I don't think it's both next. It's like the 20th best quarterback.
8:31Let's just say he's 20. I'm not saying he is, but let's just say he's 20.
8:37They won 14 games. Why? Because it's a team sport.
8:40And the reality is at the quarterback position, straight up rankings don't matter.
8:44It's about what tier are you in? And if we are just taking straight rankings, 12 to 20 are all basically the same.
8:51Right? You have like the elite of the elite.
8:54You know, top four to six guys, let's say.
8:57Right? The four horsemen of the AFC. Matthew Stafford's in there.
9:01You know, Drake May, I think, could get in there.
9:04There's a couple things I want him to clean up.
9:07But, you know, he's right outside there. And then you got like the tier two, we'll call it, where you have like
9:14the Jared Goffs and the Dak Prescott's of the world.
9:17Again, I would say Drake is in that category right now.
9:21And then below that, you have, I think, the tier that Bo is in.
9:25Which is a lot of it's like seven, eight guys.
9:29And so if you're if you're putting him in that tier, OK, well, now we're 20 names deep.
9:34And it makes you feel like he's a quote unquote below average quarterback because there's only 16 starting quarterbacks in the NFL
9:41or 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL. And if you're below 16, that means you're below average.
9:47That's not how it works. There's more solid to great starting quarterbacks in the league than there are not right now among the starters.
9:54And he's in the group that's good. So I think we need to move the Dalton line, I guess, is the best
10:01way to put it, from 16 down to like probably 22, 23.
10:05And if you're above that, you're good. And Bo Nix is above that.
10:10He's good. Yeah, there's multiple layers to this particular onion.
10:13And this is really a shell or a container, a play space that we in the media have built.
10:19And we're as guilty of it as anybody. We talk about quarterback as the most important position in the sport.
10:25And if you don't have one, you're sunk. I myself have said that several times.
10:30That's true. But if you do have something, not just the best, brightest, shiniest thing, you can win if the rest of your team is constructed well.
10:39The Broncos are constructed very well. They are an excellent football team.
10:42And I'm not saying they're dragging Bo along. Bo is good enough to play on a very good team to win 14
10:50games, which is an extremely rare achievement in the NFL.
10:53And these lists, these rankings, again, it is content that fills up most people's summers, not necessarily ours.
10:59We didn't want to do that kind of content for a bunch of reasons.
11:03So we built this instead. Glad you like it.
11:06But everybody looks at these lists all summer long for quarterbacks and gets mad about them.
11:11And quite frankly, that's what they're for. They're to drive engagement and to make you angry that your quarterback is 12th, not 8th.
11:18And I don't think that's fair because X. And to just stir up debate.
11:23That's what they're for. When in reality, yes, there are tiers of quarterbacks.
11:27And even if you're slicing the onion pretty darn thin, there's at least three to four tiers within the top 20.
11:34And there's a lot of quarterbacks in each of those tiers.
11:37There are very few of those tiers with only one or two guys that are extraordinary in some way.
11:43So on any given Sunday, Bo Nix could be the 12th best quarterback in the NFL.
11:48And on any given Sunday, he might be the 20th.
11:52It doesn't mean that either of those Sundays was bad, depending on how the rest of his team played.
11:58They might beat a very powerful team or lose to a bad one.
12:02They didn't do that very much last year because they were a complete organization.
12:06But these lists, people get very upset because, quite frankly, they're supposed to about their quarterback not being rated next to some
12:13other quarterback, maybe in the division whose team didn't finish as well.
12:17And they're like, but my team won 14 games and that guy's team won six games.
12:22So he's a better quarterback. And we have inadvertently built that perception.
12:26And we need to walk that back a little bit and have these discussions about Bo Nix is a very good quarterback.
12:33And we are going to do that today and talk about some specific examples of why he's seen the way he is.
12:40Some of the perceptions about Nix and the Broncos that are correct and some of them that are incorrect, factually incorrect.
12:47People will say things about the Broncos that simply aren't true.
12:51And so I think righting those wrongs and getting people aligned to what's actually occurring on the football field will help.
12:57Will it erase this? No, because the industry, quite frankly, wants this.
13:01They want hue and cry about things like rankings.
13:04And what better to rank than quarterbacks because it's a hot button issue?
13:08Everybody will look at it. And most everybody will get angry about it outside of two or three teams.
13:14Yeah, when's the last like positive Bo Nix discourse we've had?
13:18Think about this. If you make a ranking and 28 of 32 fan bases go, yeah, I actually think that's really fair for my starter.
13:26Did you get what you wanted in terms of engagement?
13:29No, you didn't. I mean, even today, again, we are recording this August 31st.
13:34This goes live in a few days. Again, we are towards the end of the series.
13:39We're kind of cutting a little close here. But earlier today, Dan Orlovsky said that if the Rams win the Super Bowl
13:46again and Stafford has two rings and MVP in his back pocket, he's going to be, you know, in the discussion for
13:53top five, top seven quarterback of all time. First of all, no.
13:57Second of all, that take did its job. It got two million views.
14:01Yeah, on Twitter. And I would say anytime somebody says something about any of the AFC West quarterbacks, the take is doing
14:08its job because it's so easy to be like, yeah, Mahomes is washed.
14:12They were terrible last year. Justin Herbert can't get it done in the playoffs.
14:16He's a fraud. Bo Nix, you know, Sean Payton, good offensive line merchant.
14:21Like, it's just, it's so easy to fire off takes about the AFC West quarterbacks and know that you're going to get engagement.
14:28That being said, I want people to give me a little bit of rope on this one.
14:33Maybe I'll hang myself with it if I execute this wrong.
14:37Just give me a little bit of leeway here.
14:40Careful on the footing. I think three things can be true at once.
14:44And the issue we run into is when people only think that one of these things is true.
14:50Not all three of them simultaneously. They sound contradictory.
14:53I promise they're not. So thing number one, the Broncos defense gave Bo Nix a margin for error that very few other quarterbacks get.
15:00Thing number two, in a couple key games, Bo capitalized on that margin for error where I think a lot of other quarterbacks wouldn't have.
15:08Take number three, Bo Nix has to get more consistent.
15:12The highs are very high. The lows are maddening.
15:14He has to smooth out that curve. He's not there yet, which is why he's in the tier that he's in, not the one above it.
15:23All of those things are true simultaneously. And here's why.
15:26The perception of the Broncos last year, and really the perception of Bo Nix, is this team got nothing done in the
15:33first three quarters, and then they were magicians in the fourth quarter.
15:37That's when they turn it on. That's when we see the real Broncos.
15:41That's when, if they could just play that way the entire game, they would be an unstoppable force of nature.
15:47And I will admit, I've played into that as well, because when we come on this show after the Eagles game or
15:54after the Giants game and we see what we saw, we get so excited by the tape.
16:00We get so excited by the crazy throws. We get so excited by, you know, delivering in these big moments that we're like, there it is.
16:08That's what it's supposed to be. Not to mention, I was also a Bo Nix guy pre-draft.
16:14So like, I've got to confirm my prior somehow, right?
16:17Right. And that plays into the narrative of that's what the Broncos are.
16:21Would you be surprised to know, and this is really more of a question for the people at home, because I read
16:28these numbers to EJ pre-show, and he was like, what do you mean?
16:32So for the audience, would you be surprised to know that if you take season long the numbers for Bo Nix in
16:39quarters one through three, and season long the numbers for Bo Nix in quarter four, he's actually a worse quarterback in the fourth quarter.
16:47Than he is in quarters one through three. Doesn't seem that way because of the high profile comebacks, but walk with me here.
16:54Adjusted completion percentage. This factors in drops. This factors in throwaways.
16:58He goes from 76.6% in the first three quarters down to 72.6%.
17:02So he drops by 4%. It's quite a bit when it comes to accuracy over a season long sample size.
17:08His passer rating goes down. His turnover-worthy play rate damn near doubles.
17:12Goes from 2.3 to 4.1. Big-time throw percentage goes down.
17:15TD to interception ratio gets worse. Yards per attempt, basically flat 6.3 to 6.4.
17:20You could argue that he's actually not an impressive fourth quarter quarterback compared to the first three quarters.
17:25But what do we remember? We remember, are you putting the ball in the paint?
17:30Right? Are you scoring? If you look at their scoring drive percentage, first three quarters, season long, they were 25th.
17:37If you look at their scoring drive percentage in the fourth quarter, season long, they were 6th.
17:42What's interesting about it is if you're looking at rankings, that's one thing.
17:46If you're looking at percentages, that's another. And I'll also use two other numbers to hammer this home.
17:52Rushing success rate, first three quarters, season long. They were 19th.
17:56Fourth quarter, they were 4th. Third down conversion percentage, season long, first three quarters.
18:00They were 16th. Fourth quarter, they were 6th. Here's the actual percentages.
18:04Scoring drive percent went from 37.8 to 41.0. That's actually pretty good.
18:08All right, nice little bump there. Rushing success rate went from 52.5 to 50.7.
18:12They actually went down. But their ranking got better.
18:15What's up with that? Third down conversion went from 42.9 to 41.7.
18:19Again, percentage went down. Ranking went up. Why is that?
18:22Because teams get worse as the game goes on.
18:25They get tired. Game plans fall apart. Sometimes there's mid-game injuries, like Micah Parsons tears his ACL in the third quarter against the Broncos.
18:33And so teams get worse. The average for scoring drive percentage first three quarters league-wide goes from 41.9% down to 36.4 in the fourth quarter.
18:41The average rushing success rate league-wide goes from 53.2 to 44.2.
18:44The average third down conversion percentage goes from 40.8 to 36.3.
18:48So the reason why the Broncos' rankings are so much better in the fourth quarter is they don't get worse as the
18:55game goes on at the same rate as everybody else.
18:58They're not necessarily a wagon in the fourth quarter, but they don't fall apart, which I think is a testament to the
19:05coaching staff and a testament to the players. Like, they have great stamina.
19:09I think they play, you know, physically from start to finish.
19:13Like, they really rise to the occasion and they don't wilt as the game goes on like a lot of other teams.
19:20And it makes them look like a fourth quarter juggernaut.
19:23But if you're looking at the actual quality of play, it's not really anything special.
19:28Which brings us back to the Eagles and the Giants games.
19:31There were only two games the entire year where at the start of the fourth quarter, the Broncos were behind.
19:38And it was the Eagles game and the Giants game.
19:41Week five, week seven. They obviously won both of those games, which I think is where the perception comes from because it was two dramatic comebacks.
19:49But if you're looking at how those comebacks happened, brings me back to the first statement.
19:54This Broncos defense gives them a margin for error that most other quarterbacks do not get the benefit of.
20:00So, start off with week five. At the start of the fourth quarter, they were down 17-3 against Philly.
20:07The Broncos offense started that game with this sequence of events.
20:10Punt, field goal, punt, punt, punt, punt, punt, punt, punt.
20:13They did fuck all the entire game. At the end of the third quarter, they started a drive that became a touchdown drive.
20:21Capped it off a couple minutes into the fourth quarter.
20:24That's great. Gets me to 17-10. Then the defense forced a three and out.
20:28The Eagles lost six yards and punted. So, no time bled off the clock and they got better field position.
20:35Then they scored on an admittedly great drive by Bowe.
20:38Bunch of explosive passes. Went for two. Took the lead.
20:41Forced another three and out after that. 11-play drive after that.
20:45Only one play in 11 got more than five yards.
20:48It was very much whittled you down in the fourth quarter.
20:51Because, again, it's not that they're getting better in the fourth quarter.
20:55You're just getting worse. And so they're going to take advantage of that.
20:59And then, at the end, the defense got a stop on their own 29-yard line to win the game.
21:05It's more of outlasting the enemy than anything. Get to the Giants game.
21:10Week 7. Down 19-0 entering the fourth quarter. Broncos offense started that game.
21:14Punt, punt, punt, punt. Turnover on downs. Punt, punt.
21:17Similar kind of story. Terrible. Then, J.K. Dobbins activates.
21:20Remember when I said good rushing success rate in the fourth quarter?
21:23Well, J.K. Dobbins to the rescue. Got about 48 yards on four carries.
21:28Got him into the red zone. Bowe finished it off.
21:31Touchdown. We're in business. Gets him to 19-8 because they went for two.
21:35Defense gave up a touchdown. Which, not common for them in the fourth quarter.
21:39Okay. Still on our back heels. 13-play Bowe drive.
21:42Plus another two-point conversion. 26-16. Five minutes left in the game.
21:4626-16. Still not great. Dart throws a pick. We're back in business.
21:50Again, defense showing up. Giving me an extra possession.
21:5319-yard touchdown drive because they started on the 19.
21:55Defense then forces a three and out. Uh-oh. It's 26-23.
21:59Then we get the first Bo Nix legacy drive.
22:01Takes the lead 30-26. Again, everybody was tuning into this game because it was absolutely insane in the fourth quarter.
22:08In fact, I also think it was one of the standalone afternoon games too, which helped.
22:13Defense then gave up another touchdown because of a 38-yard pass interference call.
22:17I always love that when it happens in the last 90 seconds of a game.
22:22That's great. Then we get the second Bo Nix legacy drive because Drew Lock completely shits the bed.
22:28And they win that game. The only two games all year where they start the fourth quarter down.
22:34And they win both of them. Because the defense gave them a shot and Bo Nix capitalized.
22:39But at the same time, you saw all the punts and all the turnovers there in the first three quarters.
22:45You want more from your starting quarterback if you want him to be considered one of the best in the league.
22:52You want to not be starting with like seven straight punts against the Giants and the Eagles last year.
22:58Right? All that to say, if you take out the Eagles game and the Giants game.
23:03Remember I said their fourth quarter scoring drive percentage was sixth in the NFL.
23:08If you take out just those two games, they drop down to 25th.
23:12The same as what they were in the first three quarters.
23:15Yeah. So I think all of those things are simultaneously true.
23:19The defense gave them a margin for error. They had the third most offensive possessions in the NFL because the defense kept giving them the ball.
23:27And they were not efficient, but they had volume on their side.
23:31And they were so good at not getting worse as the game went on that they were able to outlast and endure and just be the Denver Broncos.
23:40Because they have a better defense than you. They have a better offensive line than you.
23:45And eventually they were going to crack that nut and win the game.
23:49But I want everybody to understand the mechanics behind what this team actually was.
23:54They weren't fourth quarter magicians. They entered the fourth quarter with a lead most of the time.
23:59Yeah. And if you're going against that defense and you're behind, you're kind of fucked to begin with.
24:05We just we need to be realistic about what they actually were while also praising Bo for making the plays that he did in those two crucial games.
24:14This is why math is fun is when you look at disparate numbers and say, well, if that's true and that's true.
24:21How did we get here? And my take in looking at those numbers is Denver Broncos last year scored 401 points.
24:28Their point differential plus 90 was seventh best in the league.
24:31OK, if they have the 25th best scoring percentage or, you know, seventh worst.
24:36Right. If they're near the bottom league in scoring drive percentage for the first three quarters, how the hell they score all those points?
24:44And the answer is they had more bites at the apple than almost anybody.
24:48So anybody who believes that that whole diatribe is not true, that we're just trying to praise the defense and take some shine off of Bo or not.
24:57We're trying to shine a lot on Bo and say Bo is this.
25:01And that's good. We've said that several times and we believe that.
25:05But again, if you put Bo in a different situation where the offensive line was not as good or the offense in
25:12general, like the Broncos offense is a bit of a wagon in terms of skill positions.
25:17Or you put them on a team where the defense is a complete sieve.
25:22He doesn't win 14 games with the way he played.
25:25He could play exactly the same way in a different set of surroundings and it would not be a 14 game winner.
25:32It could be anywhere from a 10 or 11 game winner down to a six game winner, depending on how bad the thing that went away was.
25:41But the math, the leak in the math here is that the defense is going to give this offense more possessions than everybody else.
25:48So even though they're going to score at a lower percentage than most teams, than 24 other teams in the NFL, they're
25:55still going to put up the ninth or the seventh best point differential and go over 400 for the year because they're just going to keep grinding.
26:04And they're going to get a lot of, a lot of chances, a lot of bites the apple.
26:10So this is a team that's built the way you want it to be built.
26:15And this is going to come full circle when we talk about free agency, because there's a semi astounding number in that
26:22section that set me back on my heels. This is a complimentary football team.
26:26You want all the players on your 53 contributing.
26:29You want your defense supporting your offense and your offense, not putting your defense in holes.
26:34The Broncos do all of that because of the roster construction, because of the coaching, whatever.
26:39This is not a bad way to play football.
26:42We're not trying to characterize it that way. We're saying this, when you said being the Denver Broncos, the Broncos being the
26:49Broncos, the Broncos are good and they play to their identity and this is it.
26:54And they don't need a top five, six, eight quarterback to play that style.
26:58Bo won them 14 games playing this style because they played to their strengths and the team has been built in a very level.
27:06And I'll say sustainable way. And we'll get to that free agency.
27:10Today's episode is sponsored in part by our friends over the perfect gene.
27:14And if you haven't heard of them, obviously they make jeans, but they also make other stuff too.
27:20The quarter zip I'm wearing is from them. The t-shirt I'm wearing is from them.
27:25Literally my entire outfit that I have on is from the perfect gene.
27:29Not all of us are shaped the same, obviously.
27:32And it is kind of hard to find clothes that fit both your waist and your legs sometimes without having to pick between the two.
27:40And also it's not like a 36, 32 even means the same thing for every brand anymore.
27:45You'd think that it would be a standard measurement because numbers are numbers, but I'm sure you've had the same experience I have in every clothing store ever.
27:54Some brands treat measurements like a vague suggestion. The Imperial system is apparently more of a vibe to them than the actual measurement.
28:01And it just pisses me off relentlessly. But of course, that's where the perfect gene comes in.
28:07They stretch, they bend, and most importantly, they don't restrict you in the places that you really don't want to be restricted.
28:14If you want to try them out for yourself, shipping is free.
28:18And even if for some reason you don't like it, exchanges are free and even returns are free as well.
28:24So if your current pants bother you for whatever reason, go check out the perfect gene.
28:29They have a lot of different styles and colors to choose from.
28:33You can find them at theperfectgene.nyc. And if you use promo code BOOTLEG15, you'll get a 15% off discount.
28:39Again, that is promo code BOOTLEG15 at theperfectgene.nyc. Or you can go to the link in the description below.
28:45That's going to get you a 15% discount off your first order.
28:49Thank you once again to The Perfect Gene for sponsoring today's show and also for the close.
28:55And with that, let's get back to it. And I think, you know, the benefit of if Broncos fans are realistic and
29:02they allow themselves to be open to accepting the premise that he's not one of the 12 first quarterbacks that you're going to draft right now.
29:10If the entire league was put up for a draft, would he be one of the 12 first quarterbacks taken?
29:16Probably not. And if you allow yourself to accept that, in my opinion, reality, what that means is the Broncos last year were not at their ceiling.
29:25That means that 14 is actually not the upper limits of what this team is capable of.
29:31Because, not to oversimplify it, if you swap him with Justin Herbert, I really do think that they could have probably won
29:38maybe 15, potentially even 16, just because I perceive Justin Herbert to be that much of an upgrade at the quarterback position.
29:45Not that Bo Nix can't get there eventually, but just for what they are right now, Justin Herbert went 11-6 with the
29:52Chargers, which was a complete shell of a football team by like week 12, right?
29:56Still went 11-6, still was only three wins behind the Broncos last year.
30:01If you swap them, I don't think Bo Nix wins 11 on that team, and I don't think Herbert wins 14, I
30:08think is the best way to put it. And I think Broncos fans get offended by that, but it means, again, you guys have room to go up.
30:17You have room to go up to heights that I don't know if any other team other than the present-day Rams could get to.
30:24Because Bo Nix didn't play like one of the 12 best quarterbacks in the league last year, and they still won 14 games.
30:32Because of how dominant you are in the trenches, they have good skill position talent.
30:37I know when they traded for Waddle, it was like, oh, now they have their real receivers.
30:42Like, they had receivers last year. They had weapons.
30:45They're fine. But they're great up front. They have a great coaching staff.
30:49They've got weapons. Like, everything is there for this team.
30:52And if they had another tier-up of quarterback play, which here's the kicker, I think Bo can get there.
30:58So if you get Bo playing like Justin Herbert, yeah, they could win 15 or 16 games.
31:04It's just the frustration that he hasn't yet. And I think Broncos fans kind of want to skip to that part.
31:10Or they want their team to be perceived that way.
31:14Because they feel like they're being discounted as a 14-win team and thrown aside in favor of the shiny new object.
31:20And it's like, guys, you have to understand. They kind of played like shit a lot on offense and still won 14.
31:27It means that you have a ways to go.
31:30And that's exciting. That's good. Embrace the fact that you haven't hit your ceiling yet.
31:35Because there's a lot of teams around the league that have hit their ceiling.
31:40And they're not good enough to go all the way.
31:43You guys are. It's not in that neighborhood. And that should excite Broncos fans.
31:47Because, again, if Bo can reach that consistency. And a lot of people think Bo, as an older quarterback, obviously one of
31:54the most experienced quarterbacks ever to come out of college football, think, well, he doesn't have that capacity.
32:00I disagree. I think he can find that consistency.
32:03If we were just saying, look, it's a physical limitation, right?
32:07He just doesn't have very good wheels. Not true.
32:09He can absolutely move. He's not very tough. Absolutely untrue.
32:13He is a warrior back there. And he can throw the ball pretty well.
32:17It's about consistency. It's about making, I would say, more pedestrian plays.
32:21Not more stratospheric plays. Right? We've seen very big throws from Bo in big moments.
32:26It's not that he can't make those plays. It's, hey, man, you can't have whole games where you go three quarters without
32:33any substantive scoring with this offense and this offensive line.
32:36You have to be more consistent as the leader of that offense and as the trigger of that offense.
32:42And he knows that. I think Bo would say the same thing.
32:46And if he does that, which is doable, it's not like asking him to suddenly become superhuman and throw the ball twice as far, twice as hard.
32:55It's just saying, hey, with the skills you have that are good, find a way in those moments, in the earlier moments,
33:02to make sure that you're not in a hole approaching the third quarter.
33:06And for the most part, again, outside of two games, they did that as a team.
33:11They only entered the fourth quarter trailing in two games last year, which is an astounding stat all by itself.
33:17So they're not starting from a bad place. He is not a bad quarterback.
33:22He is not at his ceiling or, you know, unable to progress further.
33:26That's a scary thought. A 14-win team still has room to improve.
33:30And it's, I would say, reasonable to expect that they will.
33:33Well, like you said, a lot of teams have killed for that.
33:37They've already sort of topped out and they were a 9 or 10-win team.
33:42They either have to tear it down and start over or get really lucky and get one of those top five guys
33:49that everybody's after to elevate their game. They just don't have another path to that success.
33:54The Broncos do. I mean, shit. Some guys aren't seen as top 10 quarterbacks until they're seen as top 10 quarterbacks.
34:01You look at Sam Darnold. Yep. Right? Sam Darnold played a lot of bad football.
34:05Before he got to San Francisco, kind of got rewired a little bit.
34:10Then went to Minnesota, played great, went to Seattle, played great, won a Super Bowl.
34:14And now there's this perception of Sam Darnold that didn't exist 18 months ago.
34:19And I refuse to believe that Bo Nix can't undergo that.
34:22Now, he's not going to have to get cut by multiple teams and go be a backup of San Francisco first.
34:29But, like, I don't know. I've seen quarterbacks grow in the age that Bo Nix is right now.
34:35I've seen the leaps that they can take. And I do believe he has that capacity.
34:40Now, before we kind of go to the 2026 section, well, this is kind of partway into the 2026 section.
34:46I do want to talk about the star of the show to me, which is the defense.
34:52This team had the best pressure differential. Wow, sounded out, Brett.
34:55Best pressure differential in the league, meaning second best pressure rate allowed, third best pressure rate generated on the same team.
35:02Now, we've seen teams that have good pressure rates generated, terrible pressure rates allowed, and vice versa.
35:07The differential is like how good are you relative to your opponent on both sides?
35:12They're the best in the NFL. They're also the best in the run game as far as yards before contact per attempt.
35:19They're differential. Best in the NFL. They're eighth best in terms of generating it.
35:24They're best in the league in terms of stopping it.
35:27Yards before contact. Just incredible, incredible team in the trenches, which, again, is why they had the margin for error that they did.
35:34As far as philosophy, very blitz heavy team, very man coverage heavy team.
35:39Not only did they have one of the highest pressure rates in the NFL, they also had one of the highest sack conversion rates in the NFL.
35:47And that's because when they sent bodies at you, they sent a lot of bodies, and it's hard to dodge six of them.
35:55They were second most in five-man rushes. They were sixth most in six-man rushes.
35:59Overall blitz rate, sixth in the NFL. And in particular, on early downs, they were fourth.
36:04Like, they sent bodies at you. And they played a lot of man coverage behind it.
36:09Again, second highest in man coverage rate in the entire NFL.
36:13Now, the concern that I have, it's not about the secondary.
36:16It's not about the linebackers. It's about the pass rush.
36:20Because they did have a lot of guys that were really good at finishing rushes.
36:24We've talked about some teams where they get pressure, but they can't finish.
36:29Their sack conversion rate's terrible, even if their pressure rate's high.
36:32In some teams, the pressure rate's low, but their sack conversion rate's high.
36:36This team's good in both. Because there's two different components to rushing the passer.
36:41It's disrupting the quarterback and actually getting them on the ground.
36:44They had a bunch of guys that could finish the play and get the quarterback on the ground.
36:50Two of them won't be there. Right? John Franklin Myers, he's in Tennessee.
36:54Jonathan Cooper, he's on the commissioner's exempt list. For good reason, by the way.
36:59It's a really rough story. So, I don't know if he's coming back this year.
37:03Quite frankly, a lot of Broncos fans don't want him to.
37:07Again, for good reason. But that means they have a lot of production they have to replace.
37:12So, they're hoping they can get something out of DeAndre Tillman.
37:16They're hoping they can get something out of Quay Robinson, out of Jonah Ellis.
37:20They're going to have to platoon this thing like they did once upon a time when it was Barron Browning, Nick Benito, and a young John Cooper.
37:29Yeah. They've done it before, but it is a legitimate concern of mine.
37:33It should be. And again, they have done it before, and the player, the aforementioned Jonathan Cooper, was not considered a top pass rushing threat coming out.
37:42He was a mid-round choice. He had potential. He had to develop.
37:46Not even. I think he was seventh round. He was...
37:49Was Cooper seventh, or was he... Yeah. No, he's way down in the draft.
37:53Now, we valued him as a mid-round pick, but he ended up going way late.
37:58Yeah. I'm probably confusing the two because I had a fourth slash fifth round grade on him coming out.
38:04And again, it was like, hey, there are some flashes there, but much like Bo Nix, he needs to be more consistent.
38:11He needs to show that more often. And he grew into that role with the Broncos and became a preeminent part of the pass rush last season.
38:20He is not going to be there. They decided, again, team building for this team is fascinating.
38:25John Franklin Myers, to let him out the door.
38:28And I think with good reason. But one of those guys that you mentioned is going to have to step up and
38:35create pressure or a couple of them. That would be the ideal, right?
38:40It doesn't happen that often in the NFL that all three of your young pass rushers actually take a step.
38:46They just need one of them to take a big step and then another one to take a sort of mid-step so
38:53that they can be more than just down eaters, more than taking up space on that defense because this team, again, rests on its defensive success, right?
39:02The ability to stop the run is really where it starts.
39:05Fans, Joseph is always going to send a blitz.
39:08As you mentioned in multiple statistics, he needs guys that can finish those, right?
39:12Because we see teams that say, well, can't do anything else.
39:16We're just going to blitz the hell out of people, but they're not very good at it.
39:21It's all they have, so they do it a lot.
39:25Broncos do it a lot, but they're also good at it.
39:28And Vance Joseph counts on those guys to finish.
39:31And we've seen Vance Joseph defenses without guys that can finish.
39:35And he still sends blitzes, but the results are not as good.
39:38He needs people to get people on the ground.
39:41So those guys are going to have to step up.
39:45And the other part that you said is you're not worried about the secondary and they have a very high rate of playing man.
39:52We always say, well, if you can't play man, don't play man.
39:56You got Pat Sertan, man. You can play man.
39:59Like, play man if you want to. And they do because, again, they have the personnel.
40:04It reminds me of the Browns secondary several years ago now.
40:08It was loaded. And they were like, no, we'll match up.
40:11We'll play a lot of man. Like, our starting five is better than your starting five in terms of receivers.
40:18So let's go. We're going to win more often than we don't.
40:21And so the Broncos can play either way. Again, zone is the predominant defense played throughout the NFL.
40:27They have a higher man rate than most of the people.
40:31They still play plenty of zone. They're good at that too because, again, linebackers are solid.
40:36The secondary is very good. And the pass rush is making their job easier about, oh, 80% of the time.
40:42So they're going to have to continue that. If not, there's going to be more pressure put on the second level and the third level of that defense.
40:51And they might not be as good, again, if they're not creating as much pressure.
40:56That stands to reason. So they're either going to have to find that pressure from unlikely sources or find other ways to
41:03generate it through scheme, matchups, motion, any number of things.
41:06Vance Joseph is capable of doing that. But boy, he'd like to sit back as a defensive coordinator and go, my guys
41:13are going to beat your guys with what I got.
41:16Hi, Alternate Timeline Brett here. Before we get to all the 2026 stuff, if you've liked a lot of the data that
41:23we brought up so far, we have companion infographics for every single team, including the one we're talking about today.
41:30With over 15,000 total data points that we have collected throughout this summer, each team gets its own companion infographic, which is roughly about 20 pages long.
41:39It has all the data on this team you can think of, whether it's alignment data, personnel data, cap allocation, coverage data
41:46broken out by down and distance, blitz data. I mean, basically anything you can think of, we've got it.
41:52So if you want access to that, you can find that down at the link in the description below or at the QR code on the screen.
42:00Reminder, we also have bonus episodes that go live every single Friday over on Patreon, recapping every single division.
42:06We're going to pick division winners, MVPs, Rookies of the Year, all that stuff.
42:11So if you want bonus episodes, plus more data than you could probably handle, that is over on the Patreon.
42:17Thank you once again to all of our patrons that have made, honestly, this series possible to make in the first place.
42:24We could not have paid the people who help us make it without your guys' financial support.
42:30So thank you to our patrons. Thank you to all of our executive producers on Patreon.
42:35Their names are on screen right now. They have been OG supporters of us and made so much in our lives possible
42:42while we try to chase this dream. So thank you.
42:45Thank you. Thank you. And with that, let's get back to the show.
42:49Now, we're going to get into the 2026 Broncos shortly and all the moves that they've made.
42:55I do want to do a quick aside here.
42:58Well, we just had a quick aside with the Patreon plug, but one more quick aside.
43:03I promise it's quick. A lot of you mountain folk over in Colorado, Utah, all the various disparate markets that the Denver Broncos serve.
43:10A lot of you really like whiskey. And I know a lot of you really like, say, Breckenridge Bourbon or High West,
43:18all the, you know, the mountain distilleries. I implore you, since I know you like all those, you're going to like this.
43:25This is Woodinville Bourbon. It's made over in Washington State.
43:28Not near you, but it's excellent. It comes in a whole bunch of different styles, cask finishes.
43:33They have a port cask finish that's excellent. They have an Applewood Stave cask finish that's excellent.
43:39They have a rise. They have a nine year that I'm, I've actually drank a little bit too much of it too quickly.
43:46So now I'm trying to save it as long as I can until the 10 year comes out.
43:52Browse the catalog. It is excellent, excellent stuff. If you like all of your local distilleries, I know you're going to like
43:59this one that's local up to EJ up there.
44:02Just phenomenal, phenomenal stuff. Again, you can find that at the link down in the description below or at the QR code on the screen.
44:10Cannot recommend it highly enough. Jeff, EJ, now we can talk power structure.
44:14Absolutely. That nine year, by the way, is complete wizardry.
44:17Oh, it's unbelievable. Talking about things that are greater than the sum of their parts.
44:22First time I tasted that, I was like, that's not rye.
44:25And they were like, actually, it's a hundred percent rye.
44:29And I was like, what did you do? I kind of don't even want to know.
44:34I just like the magic. It's fantastic. In terms of the power structure, I'm going to go through this.
44:40I'm going to put on my Brett hat for a little bit.
44:44I normally don't like blast a whole bunch of numbers at you, but there are a whole bunch of impressive numbers about this coaching staff.
44:52So we're going to hit those. And then we're going to get to what I think is really the meat of this
44:59episode in terms of how their team building works.
45:02One of my favorite parts of football overall. This free agency recap is staggering.
45:06Like I can't wait to get to it. A lot of times it's more of a pro former.
45:12Hey, here's who came in. Here's who they retained.
45:15Here's who they gained from outside. We just kind of run through it.
45:19And this one's a little bit different. We're going to spend some time on this one.
45:24But starting with the GM that's in charge of all those processes, George Payton, obviously the head coach, Sean Payton, I don't think gets his due, right?
45:33I think he did a masterful job of coaching this team last year.
45:37And, you know, again, the new shiny thing, right?
45:40Ben Johnson was new in Chicago. Liam Cohen was new in Jacksonville.
45:44They got all the plot. It's about, oh, they turn their teams around.
45:48Sean's up there in the mountains like 14 wins, guys.
45:51It's like, buddy, I dealt with Russell Wilson. Give me some credit.
45:5514 wins, guys. Come on. His assistant head coach and run game coordinator is Zach Streif.
46:00Again, an offensive lineman for him when he was coaching in New Orleans, who is now ascended to that position.
46:06And I think is one of several assistants on this team that could be in line to be a head coach down the road.
46:14The other one that is most notably talked about as the offensive wonder kid is offensive coordinator Davis Webb.
46:20We've been hearing for the last three years that he's on the fast track to being certainly an offensive coordinator.
46:26And he was. But a lot of people don't think it's going to stop there.
46:31Many, many people within the league think Davis Webb will be a head coach in this league at some point.
46:38And I don't think they're wrong. So defensive coordinator, Vance Joseph, longtime defensive coordinator, again, has a very particular style.
46:44But when he has the right ingredients assembled, it is obviously very effective.
46:48Again, we've seen it with and without. Without, it's not quite as good.
46:52And a lot of people have questions, not unlike some other defensive head coaches throughout the league like Todd Bowles.
46:59But when he has the pieces, nobody argues with the success.
47:02Special teams coordinator is Darren Rizzi. This is the number.
47:06We're going to start with the numbers piece now.
47:08Just between the two most experienced coaches on offense, not including Sean Payton, and the two most experienced guys on defense, there's
47:15over 125 years of coaching experience between four guys.
47:18Offense is Morton and Morgan, 27 and 28 years respectively.
47:22And then on the defensive side, it's Vance Joseph and Joe Vitt.
47:25And Joe Vitt is good for 45 years worth of coaching experience by himself, which is why that number goes to 125 between four coaches.
47:33Again, we talk about an entire staff in this division with over 200 years worth of NFL coaching experience between all of them.
47:41We're talking about four guys and this staff's at 125.
47:44Sean's been doing it since probably the mid 90s.
47:47That's without Sean Payton, who is a well-tenured head coach himself or just a well-tenured NFL coach himself.
47:53Unreasonable. The pass game coordinator is John. The aforementioned John Morton.
47:56And the offensive line coach is Chris Morgan. In the second level, but I'm going to give Chris the benefit of the doubt here.
48:04The front line is outstanding in terms of the offensive line.
48:07And one of the major reasons for this team's success.
48:11They are hoping they don't have to go to their reserves, just like the Chargers are hoping they don't have to go to their reserves.
48:19That ship sailed. Well, ding, ding. We're past that already.
48:22Exactly. Drink. Chargers are on a backup offensive lineman.
48:25Drink. Wide receivers coach is Ronald Curry. One of my favorite coaches to bring up, a former North Carolina quarterback and college hoop star.
48:32He was both and he chose football back in the day when he could have made probably a lot more money playing basketball, just like you can today.
48:41Salaries are larger there because rosters are smaller, but Ronald Curry is an absolute football gym rat and has been for a long time.
48:49The offensive quality control coach. This one's fun. Willie Sneed the fourth.
48:53So this is the son of Willie Sneed the third who played collegiately at Virginia and Florida and was drafted by the
49:00Jets in the get this 12th round of the 1989 draft number 321 overall.
49:04Yes, there used to be 12. Can you imagine if we had 12 rounds today, buddy?
49:09I, oh, I'll tell you this. Yes, it's dating myself.
49:13I don't have to imagine. I was a senior in high school.
49:17No, imagine doing a show. Oh, the day three stream for 12 rounds.
49:21The live stream. Yeah, no, no, we wouldn't. We wouldn't.
49:24That's yeah. That's what the chip marks are for.
49:27That's crazy. Senior defensive assistant. Saints legend, by the way, Willie Sneed the fourth.
49:31Did play for Sean for four years in New Orleans.
49:34That's where that comes from. These family relations that we talk about.
49:38The big Venn diagram of coaching families throughout the NFL.
49:42Well, this is how it happens. But it's fantastic to see that particular relationship on this staff.
49:47Senior defensive assistant, Joe Vitt. Again, 45 years of coaching experience by himself.
49:51Defensive line coach. Always going to call him out because we just talked about how good the pressure rates were on both sides.
49:59Generating and finishing. Usually teams are better at one than they are at the other.
50:03Broncos are good at both. Got a shout out to Mark Kane.
50:07Fourth season with the Broncos. Third as the defensive line coach.
50:11So he's in front of a lot of that.
50:14And then, interestingly enough, a former player, Michael Wilhoite, never seen this title before.
50:18His coaching title is Front Seven. Just all of it.
50:21Just Front Seven. Everybody. Same time. That's all it says.
50:24Front Seven. Never seen that coaching designation anywhere else besides here.
50:28So, again, Michael Wilhoite, former player himself, outside linebacker, and is now in charge of coordinating their Front Seven.
50:34Interesting approach. We've seen teams do this in the past with, at first it was nickel coaches.
50:39It was, you know, a secondary coach or a DB coach or a safeties coach.
50:44And then there were nickels specific coaches. That started seven, maybe eight years ago.
50:49And we saw pass rush specialists, right? It wasn't that I was a defensive line coach or an edges coach or an outside linebackers coach.
50:57I was a pass rush specialist. I'm just here to get everybody.
51:01The DTs, DEs, edges, offensive linebackers, or outside linebackers.
51:04I said offensive last time too, huh? That sucks.
51:06Sounded out. Anyways, getting all the players that rush the quarterback to do it better.
51:11And we see these specific titles is, again, there's no cap on coaching salaries.
51:16You can bring in any specialist you want to solve problems, attack an offense or defense differently.
51:21And we see certain staffs do that. And this is the Broncos take on that.
51:26And, you know, I'm not going to argue the results are really good.
51:30Also, I'm going to take this opportunity to shout out the Omaha Nighthawks.
51:34That's where Michael Wilhoite started his playing group before he got to the 49ers.
51:39He played under Vic Fangio on that 49ers. I was going to say, not in Omaha.
51:44He didn't. Not in Omaha. But he was there when all four of their linebackers were all pros, right?
51:50That was the Olden Smith, Bowman, Willis. Ahmad Brooks, I think, was the other outside linebacker.
51:55And then you had Justin Smith there. Like, just nasty, nasty, nasty front seven.
52:00So if anybody understands how the front seven works together, it would be Michael Will Hoyt.
52:05He was there for all that. So from there, I want to get to free agency.
52:10I want to take a moment to shout out Mercedes Lewis.
52:13He is 42 years old. That's why I highlighted him.
52:17He's one of the notable departures. I'm not convinced he's done, done.
52:20I think if somebody calls, they're like, our tight ends can't block.
52:24Can you run even a little bit? Like, give me like five yards of being able to run.
52:30Can you come in and basically be a sixth offensive live in for us?
52:34Which I feel like that's been his role for a decade now.
52:38Easy. Since he was the ripe young age of 32.
52:42You know, he's one of the best blocking tight ends ever.
52:45And that skill set can play forever. Again, I'm not totally sure we've seen the last of him.
52:51But the fact that he is a 42-year-old tight end that is still on the notable departures list on this summer series.
52:58That is incredible. Yeah. He's the guy you want.
53:01If you're talking about degrees of separation among football players, Mercedes Lewis is your cheating bridge at 42 years old.
53:07The people he played with as a rookie, well into the Hall of Fame now.
53:12You know, he's the guy. He's the string that connects.
53:15And, you know, could he play another year? I don't know if he even wants to.
53:20But I highlighted him because very rare to see a still effective in a role NFL player at over 40.
53:27I mean, occasionally we see kickers that old. Sometimes, obviously, notably quarterbacks.
53:31But in terms of a guy that basically played in the trenches for his entire career, especially in the last part of
53:38his career, he got closer to the formation. Unreal.
53:40Unreal. Yeah, it's like Jason Peters who played tackle until he was 40.
53:45Trent might play tackle until he's 40. I mean, he's still doing it.
53:49Like, just rare, rare, rare athlete. Yep, they can do that.
53:52Jaleel McLaughlin, pass catching back extraordinaire. Also gone. Currently not picked up, but could get a phone call here this week.
53:59It is cut down week right now. PJ Locke is now at the Cowboys.
54:04He went over there because he knows this defense, right?
54:07Again, knows Christian Parker's scheme really well. Christian Parker, Vic Fangio Lieutenant.
54:11PJ Locke thrived in that kind of defense. Makes sense, right?
54:14He'll be their third safety. And I think they are going to play a bunch of three safety stuff.
54:20So I could see him getting on the field quite a bit for Dallas this year.
54:25John Franklin Myers. This one just hurt. Right? Because I feel like he's been a good player for a long time.
54:32He just keeps bouncing around different teams. And he's been effective in every single destination.
54:37I wish they could have kept him. But again, $21 million.
54:40Maybe they were looking at their future cap. And they're like, eh.
54:44Like, we got some expensive contracts coming up. Like, we're going to have to deal with paying a quarterback pretty soon here.
54:51Again, assuming Bo continues on this trajectory. He's going to get paid.
54:55I think they felt good enough about the rest of the room that they could try to replace the production in the aggregate.
55:02But still, just from a, man, he's a good player.
55:06Sucks he's no longer here perspective. J.F.M., pretty big loss.
55:09Yeah. And here's the part that got me as I started assembling all of these lists and then the draft list after this.
55:16There are only two players on this entire list that came in from outside the org this year.
55:22They added. They draft well. They added. You have to.
55:25That's my point. Has to be a league low.
55:28Most teams simply could not operate this way. They wouldn't have enough players.
55:32They just wouldn't be able to field a team, period.
55:35So as we get into the re-signings, there are a lot of them.
55:40But then when you stack the fact that they only signed two outside free agents, they only had a single choice on
55:47the first two days of the draft. And of their total picks, they cut two of them on cut down day.
55:53It's a hard team to make. Like, it's a very hard team to make and a very quality roster construction to say,
56:00we're just going to nibble at free agency. And obviously the big one was Jalen Waddle.
56:06We'll get to that. But there were only two.
56:08It was just him and Tyson Anderson. That's it.
56:11Everybody else is either homegrown talent. And again, they didn't have many draft picks and that's not really going to hurt them because where would they go?
56:20They had two of them. They didn't even sign.
56:23So, I mean, or keep at the cut down to 53.
56:26So, in terms of re-sign, where the Broncos spent their money for all this homegrown or acquired talent, Ben Powers, the left
56:33guard, Alex Singleton, the linebacker, Adam Troutman. Shout out Adam Troutman.
56:37The first guy we ever interviewed together as we weren't even bootleg yet.
56:41We'd met each other. Was it him or was it Dane?
56:45It was one of those two. It was two guys in the same room.
56:49You said, who do you want to talk to?
56:52And I said, Dane Jackson and Adam Troutman. And Adam was the first one available.
56:57Uh, and we went and talked to him and then, uh, you ended up meeting his family at game day on Saturday and a whole bit.
57:05Just doing shots in the parking lot. Great group.
57:08Drove like 14 hours down from Dayton, Ohio, him and all his teammates.
57:12It was awesome. Great people. And Troutman's still getting it done.
57:16He's 29 now. So, shout out to him. He's always going to get shouted out if he's on these lists.
57:22Justin Stranod, the other linebacker. J.K. Dobbins, who was a big part of this team.
57:27Little Jordan Humphrey, backup wide receiver. Jake Womick Millen, the corner.
57:30Nickel. You can call him what you'd like. Um, and a bunch of others.
57:35And interestingly enough, when you look at that John Franklin Myers number of 21 million, like how many of these guys can you throw in that bucket?
57:44And the answer is like 11 or 12 of them.
57:47So for that $21 million, they got backup interior offensive line.
57:50They got backup safeties, backup edges. Deandre, uh, Deandre Tillman is on this list.
57:55Um, you know, there's so many players that they just went, okay, we can have one John.
58:00Franklin Myers or we can have like eight or nine guys that play substantive snaps for us.
58:06And that was the choice they make. It's the choice that all teams have to make in this process.
58:12And that's just the way they weighed it out.
58:15Again, not that JFM is not a good player.
58:18He was for them. And like you said, he's been at multiple other stops, but he keeps being a mercenary because he's
58:25good enough to generate those big dollar contracts because he keeps putting up results.
58:29And then people go, uh, do we want to pay him $20 million?
58:33I want to pay all these other guys. So he moves on, but they only brought in two players from the outside,
58:40Tyson Anderson, the safety for the Bengals. And then Jalen Waddle comes in, he gets the big 35, almost $36 million, uh,
58:47to be a, you know, marquee receiving threat in this offense.
58:51I do want to touch on that trade a little bit.
58:54I thought it was great. I thought it worked for both teams.
58:58You know, if you're looking at the timeline of each organization, right, Broncos trying to win a championship, felt like they needed just one more weapon.
59:07Not that they were bereft of weapons, but they felt like they needed one more, you know, somebody who could be effective
59:14after the catch and also be effective deep down the field.
59:17Um, you know, I think that was a role that they had hoped that Mims would really seize hold of and be like the guy for that.
59:26Not that I think Mims is a bad player.
59:29I think he's perfectly fine, but Waddle is just better.
59:32Better at it. Right. And if you're trying to win a championship right now, like, do we really care about having another
59:39first rounder when we're just trying to go win the whole damn thing?
59:43Like we're going to have to deal with the Rams.
59:46We're going to have to deal with the Seahawks.
59:49We feel slightly undergunned if we're going to have to do that.
59:53So let's go, go get a real difference maker that we don't have to wait to develop.
59:58So I thought it was a great trade for them for their timeline.
60:03And I thought it was a great trade for Miami for their timeline.
60:07They're like, well, we're not winning shit right now.
60:10By the time we think we're going to be good, he's going to be like 30.
60:15Yeah. So let's just get what we can for him.
60:18I thought it was great. Yeah. Interestingly enough, again, Waddle's 28, not, you know, overaged as a wide receiver.
60:24But if you're looking at a two to three year building timeline like you are in Miami, he's going to be 31 or 32.
60:32And is that what we really want? Interestingly enough, we're recording this on the day after the cut down to 53 and the establishment of practice squads.
60:40You know who the new youngest team in the NFL is?
60:44Who? Miami. Well, they better be. They better be.
60:47But it's interesting that Halfley came from Green Bay and Green Bay was notably for the last several years, the youngest starting team in the NFL.
60:55And now that designation follows him, transfers to Miami.
60:58We talked about how hard this team is to make.
61:01I think that was reflected in the draft. Again, they would rather spend their picks or their more valuable draft assets on
61:08somebody that they know can contribute right now. Because what do they really need another rookie receiver for if we can go
61:15out and get in jail at Waddle? So they ended up with six, no, seven draft picks total.
61:21And five of them made the team, I believe.
61:24Yeah. And again, no picks on day one. First pick they had was 66 in the third round.
61:30So no picks until the third round on day two.
61:33Tyler and Yadam, the interior defensive lineman from Texas A&M.
61:36I like him a lot. There were a lot of interesting DTs.
61:40We talked about at this point, most of them during the summer series that brought something.
61:45There was a lot of talent defensively on that Texas A&M squad.
61:49That's to say the least. And when you ended up watching that film, there were flashes from Tyler that I thought were really good.
61:57And again, did they happen often enough? No, but it felt like we're talking about a 22, almost 23 year old player.
62:04So again, not an overage player, not a guy necessarily to the ceiling.
62:08It's a player that I think landed in a perfect spot.
62:11We talked about the pressure that Vance Joseph wants to bring.
62:15We talked about the fact that he's going to rotate players in and out, that you need players who can play down
62:22the stretch and give you that juice on the pass rush into the fourth quarter.
62:27However, I think Njadim can become that. I don't think he is that right now.
62:31But if you, again, he's one of those players that when you're looking at all the other flashy talent on that defensive
62:39line, if you took his 10 best plays and put them in a highlight reel and put them in front of the
62:46coach or this defensive line coach and said, hey, do you want this?
62:50Because I don't think there's a defensive line coach in the NFL that would be like, you know, again, they would ask, well, how often does that happen?
62:59But if that's what he can give me, of course, I want that guy on my team.
63:04So the fact that, you know, he's their first overall pick, but he didn't get picked until 66.
63:10And he is just the rich getting richer, right?
63:13They already have a strong defensive line. They already have a versatile and very defensive line.
63:18He is another piece that's going to fit into that rotation and just give them killers down the stretch so that they
63:25don't fall off in the fourth quarter. And he's going to play, right?
63:29Like they, they rotate their guys a lot. So as far as my evaluation of him, I don't want to say it was a reach.
63:37It was, it was slightly earlier than I thought he would go.
63:41Well, not even slightly. It was earlier than I thought he would go.
63:45But I see the vision. And again, this is a roster that's so good that they're really just swinging for upside.
63:52They're not swinging for guys that, that are just going to be okay.
63:56They're like, we need to find needle movers here, or at least somebody who we think can be a needle mover if we develop them.
64:04And he's got enough talent that they, they like the long-term play there.
64:08Um, as far as the rest of their picks, I mean, it was one, two, three, four, five, six day, three picks,
64:15which for a roster that's talented, I'm actually not that surprised that, that two of them didn't make it.
64:21Yeah. Me neither. Again, they hopped down to the fourth round.
64:25They had two fourth rounders, a fifth rounder, and then two seventh rounders or sorry, three seventh rounders.
64:31So no sixth rounders in this group. Um, but Jonah Coleman, the player they got at one Oh eight, the running back out of Washington.
64:39I unabashed Jonah Coleman fan, not just because he was a Husky.
64:42I love the style with which he plays. I obviously have gotten to watch him play a lot of football and he is ready to go.
64:51You're talking about players that are ready to go right now and contribute.
64:55Jonah Coleman is that he does not need to be further developed.
64:59We saw some of that in the preseason as well.
65:02This is a guy who was in my tier three of running backs.
65:06He was right behind Emmitt Johnson. We talked about Emmitt Johnson in the chiefs episode this week.
65:12Jonah Coleman was in the same tier with him and Mike Washington.
65:15Is he as flashy? No. Is he as powerful?
65:18Yes. Is he as savvy as a runner? You very rarely see Jonah Coleman falling backwards.
65:23He is always getting the extra yard, falling forwards, maximizing the creases that the offensive line generates for him.
65:30That's a perfect fit in Denver. It's also scary good in the passing game.
65:34He is built like an absolute tank. He is, let me see, Jonah Coleman is 5'8", 220.
65:39It's just, he's just round. He's just a sentient, muscled up circle.
65:43He is a bowling ball and so much fun to watch.
65:47So powerful, but also very good in the swing game, passing game.
65:51And Sean Payton's used that famously in his time in New Orleans and has found a way to bring that to Denver as well.
65:58And Coleman's again, going to step right in. It's not like, oh, he's a good between the tackles runner and he's super
66:05powerful, but we're going to have to teach him the passing game or the pass pro game.
66:11No, Coleman's ready to go. He's a pro right now.
66:14And the Broncos are going to get good use out of him because of that.
66:19Wow. I was wrong. They didn't cut two guys.
66:22They cut three. Oh, who's the third one? They cut Miles Scott.
66:26Oh, I didn't know they cut Miles Scott. But again, another, so two seventh rounders and a fifth rounder, to be fair.
66:33It's not like they're cutting third rounders. That's a red flag.
66:36And Murdoch was also Mr. Irrelevant too, which again, considering the last, lack of depth now on day three because of NIL,
66:43it's, that's basically the equivalent of a, of a UDFA.
66:46Correct. We're just talking about quality of player in, in the draft, but man, so their next four picks, cage Casey, the
66:53guard out of Boise state, we both like, um, again, really great offensive line, probably not going to play because of that.
67:01But I think that if somebody gets injured, you could put them on the field and like, feel okay about it.
67:07Honestly, uh, Justin Jolie, um, who, you know, undersized, but really explosive, kind of like move tight end full backy hybrid figure
67:14out what he is kind of guy, uh, didn't make the team.
67:18Um, he got claimed by the dolphins, which I'm actually kind of jazzed about that fit for him.
67:24Uh, miles Scott, who we mentioned safety at Illinois.
67:27He also got cut, um, Dallin Bentley tight end at a Utah.
67:31So remember they took two tight ends really realistically.
67:34Only one was going to make it anyway. He's the one that made it.
67:38And then red Murdoch, the other linebacker out of Buffalo, Buffalo kind of cranking out linebackers lately.
67:43For sure. Um, he, he also didn't make the team.
67:47So I mean, looking at this class, that's the draft of a team that knows that they're ready to go.
67:53Yeah. Like really, none of them are really going to play more than 20% of snaps.
67:58Like that's probably the max I would say. Yeah.
68:01I mean, with looking at where they are in their position designations, Peyton famously, not huge on playing rookies anyways.
68:07And that's just a, you know, an organizational philosophy that served him very well.
68:12Uh, not all his fellow coaches feel that way, but he certainly does.
68:16And you look at where these guys stack up in the depth charts and again, situationally where they're probably going to be brought in.
68:24And yeah, they're going to be eased into this thing.
68:27None of these guys are the guy. And you, if you've been listening to this series all summer, we go through the
68:34drafts like this guy's going to start from day one.
68:37He's going to be counted on. He's going to have to be an engine of the offense or else they're going to be bad.
68:45That's not the case with the Broncos. This team already has all those guys in place.
68:50These are their backups. They're understudies. The guys that are going to learn, provide depth, and eventually be that cheap labor that
68:57we see re-signed in that big re-signing block that we just talked about when we went through free agency.
69:03So you'll see some contributions here. Uh, again, I liked, I liked Justin Jolie.
69:08I thought he was an interesting player, but again, I fit might actually be better with Miami.
69:13Dallin Bentley was a player that I really liked, got lost in a, what I think is a very deep tight end class.
69:20He made this roster. He's, he's going to be a player for them.
69:25Red Murdoch was an absolute hammer in the middle of this defense, like, or in the middle of his Buffalo defense.
69:31I, I think he could still latch on with another team in the NFL.
69:36He is the kind of player that's going to bounce around.
69:39He's going to be a bottom five player that's elevated back and forth between the practice squad and special teams and everything else.
69:47That's how he's going to have to make his star.
69:50I think he could eventually be a rotational starter, but again, they're just trying to put their tab on him in the
69:57seventh round and say, we don't want him to go to UDFA.
70:01UDFA as a result doesn't make this team just because they're really deep, not because he's a bad football player.
70:07So not a single UDFA made this team. I'll start with that.
70:11Here's a stat for you. Apparently the last time the Broncos did not have a single UDFA make the roster, they won the Superbowl.
70:19It was about 10 years ago, which I think it was the 2015 team.
70:23Was that the year that Peyton's arm was cooked, but they were so good.
70:28I think that was that year. But the last time no UDFAs made it, it was that year.
70:34So that's how good this team is. Again, just hammering that point home over and over and over again.
70:40They're like the anti-dolphins at this point. It's tough.
70:42It's a tough squad to make. Before we get into our ceiling and floor, I would like to encourage you guys, if
70:50you are fresh out of Broncos gear or you want to get a little bit more Broncos gear, you can do so with our partners over at Homage.
70:59They also sell bootleg gear. Or if you're not a Broncos fan, whatever your team is, you can find officially licensed gear for your team over on Homage.
71:07Or you can find stuff for movies or comics or video games.
71:11Like whatever it is, you can find it on Homage.
71:15Go check out their catalog. It is extensive. Like very, very extensive.
71:18And whatever you get there, whether it's our merch or whether it's something for your favorite team, we do a little profit sharing there.
71:26So it's a great way to kind of under the radar, support the show, I guess, while also getting gear for yourself.
71:33And we thank all of you who have done that because the more you guys support our sponsors, the easier it is to financially make this show.
71:42So thank you once again for that. Brings us to ceiling and floor.
71:46It's a show full of caveats. I'm doing it again.
71:49Yes, they won 14 last year. You could talk me into 15 win Broncos team.
71:54Looking at their schedule and also the fact that I am a little worried about the pass rush relative to last year
72:01in the pass rush, boy, did a lot of work for them.
72:05I'm setting the ceiling at 13. That's still good enough to be the one seed in the AFC.
72:11As far as I'm concerned, a one seed is a one seed.
72:14Doesn't matter how many wins you get. If the playoffs run through Denver again, good enough for me.
72:20It's hard to win 14 games, let alone back to back years.
72:24I still think 13 is a perfectly respectable ceiling for a Super Bowl contender.
72:29And really the telltale sign of a great team is floor.
72:32I would be stunned short of quarterback injury again.
72:35I would be stunned if this team won single digit games.
72:38I'm putting the floor absolute floor at 10, which means wild card is damn near worst case scenario.
72:44And first seed is the more realistic one of the two.
72:48If I had to guess. I think this is the first time all summer that we have matched.
72:53Exactly. We've matched in ceilings and we've matched in floors, but I don't know that we had another episode where we matched in ceiling and floor.
73:02It is 13 and 10 for me in terms of why it could all work.
73:07I said, it's already all working. And they added even more gas at wide receiver competition in their division is going to be tougher.
73:14The other teams are going to be better this year.
73:18That means they might win one less game, two less games.
73:21It could be more of a dogfight in this division, but there's still the leaders to win their division again.
73:27I do not. I'm not saying that they are the dark horse to win.
73:32I think they are the favorites to win this division.
73:35This is an incredibly strong foundation for this team, both in personnel and coaching.
73:40And because of that, in terms of how it could all fall apart, fall apart's in air quotes, because if the O-line
73:47health gets dinged up or the pass rush juice with Cooper suspended, there's potential pitfalls there.
73:52Other than that, this feels like no worse than a double digit win team.
73:56That's worst case is that they're going to win double digit wins, 10 wins.
74:01And again, they'd still be in the, in the hunt for a wild card.
74:05Most likely at that point, that's if everything goes wrong, that's crazy.
74:09That's a sign of respect for this team that they're not going to do worse intent.
74:14And I think they're actually going to be much closer to 12, 13.
74:18And again, like you, if somebody told me right now, Hey, I'm from the future and the Broncos won 15 games this year, I'd be like, huh?
74:27Okay. Yeah. I wouldn't, I wouldn't scoff at it.
74:30I'd be like, yep. I could see that. Not like, are you sure?
74:34So did Bo win MVP? Cause that's prove your future.
74:37Yeah. At that point, everything's good. But even at 13, they win the division.
74:42You don't want to play in Denver in the playoffs against this team with Bo Nix staying on the field.
74:48It's, it's not going to go particularly well for you.
74:51So again, we'll see how it plays out throughout the season.
74:55Preseason is very different than when we start getting into the post season.
74:59Lots of things happen. That's why we watch the sport.
75:02That's why we love this sport. It's why you love this sport.
75:06But right now at the outset with everything we know with a 53 man roster set, Denver is one of the most
75:13powerful teams in the AFC and a strong threat to win it as a conference.
75:18Side tangent here. Cause I was trying to think of like, okay, other than Bo, like what's the one injury that could
75:25make them go down to 10 Garrett Bowles. Maybe I was thinking Sertan.
75:29I mean, Bulls too. I mean, I think they honestly, I think they could survive.
75:34Yeah. I think they could survive Bulls getting injured easier than they could survive Sertan getting injured.
75:39If something happened again, knock on, this isn't wood, knock on metal.
75:43That's why I have a wood desk, man. He stays healthy.
75:47So right here. Wish injuries away. If Pat gets hurt.
75:50Sure. I really do think he might be one of the only DBs in the league that is worth three wins.
75:57Like truly, just because the entire structure of their defense kind of relies on him being Pat Sertan.
76:02But if he stays healthy again, I struggle to see a path to 10.
76:07Yeah. It's very difficult. Sean Payton is a really good coach.
76:10And again, this is not a team that is dependent on a quick strike offense or a gimmick on defense or anything else.
76:18The offense and the defense are both very sound, right?
76:21They can run the ball. They can throw the ball.
76:24They can probably throw the ball even better this year.
76:27Because Bo has another year of experience in the system, the offensive line.
76:32They didn't really have major losses at all. And they added a major piece to the passing offense in Waddle.
76:38Okay. They're still going to be able to do things on offense.
76:42Okay. Defense. We have our reservations about the pass rush, finding another player.
76:46They've got waves of guys, but somebody does have to step up.
76:50Linebackers. The same. Pretty much. Secondary. The same. And very talented.
76:53Again, there are two. There's too much talent on the coaching side, on the roster side, to imagine this team just completely hitting the skids and falling apart.
77:02Like, I can't imagine that scenario. And I can imagine a lot of scenarios.
77:07With that, that almost brings our AFC West week to a close.
77:11Remember, we do have our Patreon show tomorrow where we're going to pick our division winner.
77:16We're picking our division MVPs, players of the year, rookies of the year, coach of the year, bold predictions, predicting everything for
77:23the entire AFC West tomorrow over on Patreon. You can find that again at the link in the description below or the QR code on the screen.
77:31And then schedule is going to be kind of wonky because NFC West week, like they start playing games in the middle of NFC West week.
77:40So our initial plan, hoping it survives contact with the enemy.
77:43We'll see. We would like to get the first NFC West episode up on Saturday.
77:48So we can do Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, get everything released so that the Seahawks episode doesn't come out like after they played their first game.
77:56Our editor is incredible. His name is Alden. Yes, he is a monster.
78:01We are going to be doing our best to get them out in time.
78:05We might even have a double episode release day.
78:08We'll see. Stay tuned. We are going to be doing our best to get this out.
78:13It's been a little bit of a wild ride this year.
78:17Kind of got a little bit fucked with the new schedule.
78:20The Wednesday season start, not great for summer series, but we'll get through it.
78:25And then we're going to be in the regular season and we'll have real games to talk about.
78:30So thank you once again for all of your support.
78:34Thank you for all of you that have watched every single one of these.
78:38You lucky few, you brave few. We love you.
78:41Thank you to our patrons. Thank you to Woodinville.
78:44Thank you to homage. We will see you, I guess, in like 48 hours, maybe possibly.
