Andrew Erickson highlights A.J. Brown's dominance in practice, noting his ability to 'dust' defensive backs, and expects him to continue this performance in upcoming joint practices.

Insight page

Baker Mayfield

NegativeInjury10:33

The source suggests that Baker Mayfield should avoid playing in preseason games to prevent injury, especially given his high-intensity playing style and lack of a long-term contract.

Insight page

Carson Beck

PositiveProjection63:50

Carson Beck is noted for his efficiency in his first game against the Carolina Panthers. While there is speculation about a comparison between him and Fernando Mendoza, the source believes Mendoza is more likely to start NFL games first.

Insight page

Carson Wentz

NegativeDepth Chart30:32

The source speculates that Carson Wentz could potentially be the backup quarterback for the Vikings behind Kyler Murray.

Insight page

Chris Godwin

NegativeProjection8:44

The source notes that Chris Godwin has not returned to his previous form following a catastrophic ankle injury sustained during the 2024 season.

Insight page

Chris Rodriguez

NegativeDepth Chart56:48

Chris Rodriguez Jr. is listed as a co-starter on the Jaguars' first depth chart, with the source noting interest in whether he receives playing time in the preseason.

Insight page

Denzel Boston

PositiveBreakout59:45

The source notes that Denzel Boston is reportedly 'lighting it up' in training camp, and there is interest in seeing if he can live up to the hype in preseason action.

Insight page

Emeka Egbuka

NegativeInjury6:50

Emeka Egbuka limped off the practice field at training camp and was examined by trainers; the source expresses concern regarding his availability, noting that the Buccaneers are already facing a depth problem at wide receiver.

Insight page

Emmett Johnson

PositiveRole92:02

The source is watching Emmett Johnson to see if he can secure the backup running back role behind Kenneth Walker III, noting his do-it-all skill set.

Insight page

Evan Engram

NegativeBust72:25

The source cites Evan Engram as a past example of a player who became a total bust due to low route participation and limited playing time, which was evident during the preseason.

Insight page

Fernando Mendoza

PositiveProjection63:29

The source expects Fernando Mendoza to play sooner rather than later, dismissing the idea that Kirk Cousins will hold the starting job for three-quarters of the season. The source is eager to see his debut, specifically noting his ability to handle under-center snaps, which is a transition from his college experience.

Insight page

Greg Dulcich

PositiveUsage85:30

The source is hyper-focused on Greg Dulcich's role, hoping to see him run routes on all of the quarterback's dropbacks to confirm he is the team's primary tight end.

Insight page

J.J. McCarthy

NegativeDepth Chart29:12

The source expresses doubt about J.J. McCarthy's future with the Vikings, suggesting he may be traded or that he is not long for the organization given the team's commitment to Kyler Murray.

Insight page
NegativeValue30:54

The source suggests the Vikings would trade J.J. McCarthy for a fourth-round pick if possible, viewing him as a likely QB3 who is currently overhyped. The consensus is that his development has been a failure relative to expectations, and he may be on a different team soon.

Insight page

Jalen McMillan

NegativeInjury8:47

The source reports that Jalen McMillan is currently dealing with an injury, further exacerbating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' wide receiver depth issues.

Insight page

Jayden Daniels

NegativeProjection49:11

The loss of Laramie Tunsil to a season-ending tricep injury significantly downgrades the Commanders' offensive line, leading to concerns about Jayden Daniels' safety and fantasy viability. Despite the addition of Stephon Diggs, the combination of a poor line and a brutal early schedule makes him a risky draft pick.

Insight page

Josh Jacobs

NegativeUsage14:14

Josh Jacobs is mentioned alongside Puka Nakua regarding potential NFL discipline. The source doubts a suspension will occur in the absence of formal charges.

Insight page

Justin Herbert

PositiveValue50:55

Justin Herbert is presented as a safer, more reliable fantasy quarterback option compared to Jayden Daniels, as he benefits from a healthier offensive line and a deep group of playmakers, and can be drafted much later.

Insight page

Keaton Mitchell

NegativeUsage39:13

Keaton Mitchell is viewed as a potential change-of-pace back who could earn more work if he catches fire or if the team faces defensive fronts that favor outside zone runs. While he is behind Hampton, he remains a player to track for efficiency spikes.

Insight page

Kirk Cousins

NegativeProjection67:29

The source expresses skepticism regarding Kirk Cousins' ability to lead the team, citing past poor performances against the Dolphins. The source believes the team's commitment to him as the starter is misguided and expects him to lose the job.

Insight page

Kyler Murray

PositiveDepth Chart29:03

Kyler Murray has been officially named the starting quarterback for the Vikings, a move the source describes as expected.

Insight page
NegativeRole33:22

Kyler Murray has been named the starting quarterback for the Vikings, though the source notes he seemingly 'backdoored' his way into the job because the team did not want to commit to J.J. McCarthy. His performance will be under intense scrutiny during the preseason, particularly his connection with Justin Jefferson.

Insight page
NegativeProjection61:13

The source expresses skepticism regarding Kyler Murray's status as the starting quarterback, suggesting the competition was 'fake' and that his performance in preseason action may be underwhelming.

Insight page

MarShawn Lloyd

PositiveBreakout77:01

Marshawn Lloyd is viewed as a potential explosive backup to Josh Jacobs. Despite injury concerns, he has impressed in training camp and is seen as a viable contingency plan given Jacobs' current legal and injury status.

Insight page

Mike Evans

NegativeDepth Chart8:35

The source notes that Mike Evans is no longer with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, contributing to the team's current wide receiver depth concerns.

Insight page

Omarion Hampton

PositiveUsage38:41

Despite Mike McDaniel's comments about using a three-back rotation, O'Marrion Hampton remains the primary back with the best draft pedigree and well-rounded skill set. He is expected to get the first crack at the starting role, and his early-season schedule against the Cardinals, Raiders, and Bills is highly favorable.

Insight page

Parker Washington

NegativeRole56:35

The source highlights that all eyes are on Parker Washington to see if he emerges as the primary receiver for the Jaguars, noting the ambiguity of the team's receiver room.

Insight page

Pat Bryant

PositiveRole83:44

Pat Bryant is generating significant buzz in Denver and appears to be running away with the wide receiver three job, potentially offering more than just blocking utility.

Insight page

Puka Nacua

NegativeInjury13:37

Puka Nakua left practice with an injury, but reports suggest it is a minor issue. While there is speculation regarding a potential suspension related to a 'biting incident,' the source believes this is likely a 'nothing burger' and that Nakua remains a top-tier fantasy asset.

Insight page

Travis Etienne

NegativeUsage57:52

The source notes that the Jaguars are keeping their plans for Travis Etienne close to the vest, specifically regarding his usage on offense versus defense, likely waiting until Week 1 to reveal their strategy.

Insight page

Trevor Lawrence

PositiveProjection58:26

The source recommends drafting Trevor Lawrence because he outscored every other quarterback in fantasy points from Week 5 onward last season, providing a reliable option amidst the Jaguars' ambiguous skill position group.

Insight page

Ty Simpson

PositiveRole90:08

Ty Simpson is expected to get significant reps for the Rams, providing a rare opportunity to evaluate a quarterback who could have a future role with the team.

0:22What's up friends and welcome into Tailgate, where it's straight NFL talk with some of your favorite fantasy analysts.
0:28Pat Pitts-Morris, Andrew Erickson, I'm Chris Welsh. We've got real football here.
0:31We have got real football action about to go down 24 hours, maybe an hour from when you're listening to this, or maybe you've already got some breakdowns.
0:39We're going to be looking at week one of the preseason.
0:42What are the big important storylines? What are we looking for?
0:46Where are the matchups, the rookies that are in big battles?
0:49Straight NFL talk from these two fine gentlemen. Erickson, it's here.
0:52You're going to have so much to overreact to.
0:54What level of overreaction are you preparing yourself for?
0:57When you see seven plays from a guy that you've been monitoring for the last six months in preseason, where are you going to go with this?
1:05So many directions you can go with the preseason.
1:07You can either take everything at face value or you can get extremely carried away.
1:12I think last year, one of the biggest preseason risers was one of my Patriots, Travion Henderson, takes a kickoff return for a touchdown.
1:18Just confirming that, oh yeah, by the way, this guy's really fast.
1:22This guy's explosive. Then you look, his ADP has gone up like two rounds and obviously ended up being a grave mistake
1:28early on in draft seasons last year. So don't want to get too carried away.
1:32But at the same time, football's fun. Big plays, explosive plays, touchdowns, whether it's guys that are going to be teaching high
1:39school tomorrow, next month, or from our favorite NFL players, football being back just makes life better.
1:44Yeah. Well, well said. Put that on a shirt.
1:46Football being back just makes life better. Same thing, Fitzy.
1:49Football action. We're going to be going through some news and notes as well.
1:53But, you know, the first week of this preseason action in whatever capacity we're going to be seeing some of these guys.
1:59Do you believe that week one of the preseason is a proper representation of the things like where these new offensive schemes
2:06might actually look like a player running with the ones like how much are you going to put into a week one?
2:12Maybe a little more than we used to, because week one and week four of the old NFL preseason used to be kind of throwaways.
2:19And you could sort of ignore it. And week two and week three was the weekends or the weeks of the preseason to dial in.
2:26Now only three preseason weeks and some teams get it going kind of early and roll out the starters a little bit in week one.
2:33So not everyone. Different teams certainly handle the preseason differently than others.
2:37Different coaches. Some believe in getting their starters ready.
2:39Andy Reid likes to play his starters quite a bit.
2:42Others just shut it down. I don't think Brian Schottenheimer played any of his starters last year in the preseason for the Cowboys.
2:49So we're going to see different approaches for sure.
2:51But it'll be nice to see some of these rookies take the field with their new teams for the first time.
2:57And just generally, it's great to have tackle football back in our lives, Welsh.
3:01And again, it's straight NFL talk. No actual fantasy slants here.
3:05But if you guys do enjoy this conversation, which, by the way, it has themes to it, if you're coming over from
3:11fantasy pros or betting pros or anything like that, these straight conversations we're having around the NFL have full translating over and
3:17maybe are going to even help dictate some of those cases we're going to make on the fantasy side.
3:23But if you guys are enjoying the content, make sure you're with us all season long by subscribing.
3:28Hit that bell so you're notified. Don't miss any of the tailgate this season.
3:32We got cool stuff planned all season long. Andrew Erickson kind of taking the wheel as well with some cool stuff.
3:38So make sure you're in for all football talk, breaking down and looking at each week ahead from a full NFL slant.
3:44So let's jump into some news and notes before we are actually going to be breaking down and looking at the biggest
3:50things, at least in our eyes, for the storylines for week one from a game-to-game perspective.
3:55There are so many injuries that are happening. I know we always do this, but whatever happened over the last seven days,
4:01let's say, all of a sudden, guys are getting hurt.
4:04But it's all wide receivers. I don't know what's happening there.
4:07And we got a slew of important notes here.
4:10But at the tippy top, just today, as we're setting up to record here, Emeka Ekbuka was hurt at training camp.
4:16He limped off the practice field, was examined by trainers, and we don't know anything else.
4:20So we are in a little state of the next guy we're going to talk about.
4:25We had this exact same situation where it was like a five-hour span of wondering what's happening.
4:30But Fitzy, what level of worry do you have with this?
4:33We have a little bit of context as far as, as I mentioned, we're going to talk about Puka Nakua.
4:39Puka Nakua had something like this yesterday, and then things seemed to be okay.
4:43You see something like this where there's no information given out.
4:46What level of concern do you have, Emeka Ekbuka, who's going into a new position?
4:50I had this long debate with our buddy Scott Bogman about the excitement of him this year.
4:55And I really subscribe to the kind of like Matt Harmon process of this, of like Emeka Ekbuka moving to the Z
5:01spot is going to be huge for him as a wide receiver.
5:05And he's going to get to be a featured role guy.
5:08So losing him is huge. But how scared are you when you see an injury like this of limping off and no information?
5:15Buccaneers fans have to be concerned, no doubt. And remember when the Buccaneers drafted Emeka Ekbuka in 2025, and it seemed like,
5:21oh, this seems like overkill at wide receiver. They've got Mike Evans.
5:24They've got Chris Godwin. They sort of like Jalen McMillan.
5:27Well, now Evans is gone. Godwin has not returned to his old form after the catastrophic ankle injury he had in the 2024 season.
5:34And Jalen McMillan, I believe, is also hurt. So they're suddenly facing a depth problem at wide receiver.
5:39They can't afford to lose Ekbuka for any length of time.
5:42Yeah, and Erickson, one of the things with this is it's not like – because this is the type of thing that happens.
5:49It just shuts a dude down for all these camp games.
5:52Like he's just not going to play in the preseason.
5:55I'm not saying that's necessarily going to happen, but this is the type of thing that happens.
6:00And they're just like, well, they're not going to play a game.
6:03That doesn't necessarily affect anything with a guy like Emeka Ekbuka, other players that can.
6:07But kind of same thing. When you look at something like this, is this something that you think carries over to early parts of the season?
6:15Yeah, I think from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers perspective specifically, yeah, just shut them down.
6:19You don't need to play any of these guys in the preseason games now that the substation has purchased a timeshare in
6:25Tampa Bay, it seems like, because of all the Tampa Bay players that keep going down.
6:30I mean, that's what derailed their season last year.
6:33It was Baker Mayfield MVP. Then he got banged up.
6:36Tristan Wirfs got banged up. Ekbuka got banged up.
6:38And then they just lost all those games that they were favored in in the second half of the season.
6:44Mayfield can't get his contract, by the way, because I think I'm not going to play in a meaningless game if I
6:50don't have a long term contract signed and ready to go.
6:53So especially the way that Baker Mayfield plays, like he's always going a thousand percent.
6:58Even in a game, it doesn't matter. He's going to be going a thousand percent.
7:02So if I'm his agent, I'm like, you're not playing in these games.
7:06They don't mean anything. Do you want to be Baker Mayfield week one?
7:09Yes, that's what you got to do. I get that it's a new offense, but that's why you also have joint practices and those types of R2s.
7:17And I do believe the Buccaneers had a joint practice with the New York Jets this week.
7:22So they are still getting those valuable reps. That actually matters more than playing in the preseason games.
7:27And it's actually like one of the trends I'm looking at from a betting perspective is betting unders in games that featured
7:33the teams facing joint practices the week leading up to it, where they beat the crap out of each other during the joint practices.
7:40And then the game comes and it's basically a glorified walkthrough that fans get to watch.
7:45So I am giddy about going to some of these joint practices.
7:48I'm going to go on to the Patriots joint practice next week against the Philadelphia Eagles.
7:53You guys see that A.J. Brown dusting Sauce Gardner?
7:55I'm going to see him dust Quinion Mitchell and Cooper DeGene next week.
7:59So I am giddy. Giddy, baby. I like that.
8:02And by the way, this will be an opportunity for the legend of Hurst, Ted Hurst, to just continue to roll.
8:08The thirst for Hurst is real. Yep, the thirst for Hurst.
8:11So a really big one. And this was important to me because our buddy Jake Seeley over in the Flex Leagues on
8:17the fantasy side, I was doing my Flex League draft and I was gifted Puka Nakua at the five spot, one five.
8:23And I was like, let's go. Ran it through Fantasy Pro System, by the way.
8:28Number one projected. And Fitzy right over there. Fitzy loved my draft, one of the highest of there.
8:33But then like 30 minutes later, we find out about Puka Nakua getting banged up.
8:37He left practice. He had McVay saying he wasn't sure.
8:40But then everything kind of came out okay. Like that's a minor issue.
8:44That's something, again, where it's like, okay, you're just not going to play.
8:47But then we had like a piggyback on. And the piggyback situation with this injury was a report from Adam Schefter that was twofold.
8:54It was that not only is Puka Nakua still facing this situation, but Josh Jacobs, both players and a couple other players
9:01that are floating out there in the NFL, but these are the two most prominent names, might still be potentially facing a suspension.
9:07Due to, you know, Puka Nakua is the – it sounds ridiculous – the biting incident.
9:12The biting incident. And then, you know, Josh Jacobs, maybe a little bit more serious.
9:16But this kind of like raised up a little bit more concerns.
9:19So the question is, is like, Erickson, do you think we should be more concerned about Puka Nakua and Josh Jacobs facing
9:26longer periods of time after this report just kind of gets thrown out to us?
9:30Not really. I don't think that this was anything new that we didn't already know.
9:34We knew that these guys had these ongoing situations.
9:37And there's always a chance that, you know, things play out and something happens and then you deal with the altercations because
9:43the NFL can do whatever they want when it comes to this stuff, right?
9:47Right? There's no consistency. I swear Roger Goodell has a dartboard that just has numbers on it.
9:52He's like, how many games are we going to spend this guy for doing this thing?
9:57He throws it at the dartboard and he's like, let it fly.
10:00Five games. One game. Two games. So I do think that – and it's something Pat Green pointed out specifically to Puka
10:06Nakua – how the words that Adam Schefter used were, we might not see Puka Nakua Thursday night in Australia.
10:12That seems like very specific to just like that one game.
10:15And maybe the NFL is just like sick of Puka Nakua, like doing some things that just don't encourage him being doing.
10:22Like just being in the headlines for the wrong reasons.
10:24So he gets suspended for one game. It's like you're not playing Thursday.
10:28You're not playing in the season opener in Australia.
10:31I mean this game just in general seems like it could just be a total mess.
10:35It's like all the 49ers injuries, Kyle Shannon dealing with his own injuries as the head coach of the team.
10:41We don't know which Rams players are going to be available.
10:44Like it just seems like – and then we're just going to like throw it all in this giant plane ride that
10:51takes 30 – how many hours does it take?
10:5336 hours, 24 hours? I don't know. So many hours.
10:56Why does it take so many hours? Like I just – I don't think Australia is going to get our finest product.
11:02Can we talk about the Schefter thing though? So me and Fitzy before the show were like let's like go and check out this.
11:09So we played – this is like from a podcast that Schefter was on.
11:13And like the news of it was fine. But my god, Adam Schefter – because we're listening to this.
11:19And as we're listening to this, we're like oh, this is kind of nothing.
11:23Like this might be in the dramatic – he's like Puka Nakua might potentially still – everything was slow and dramatic.
11:29Might the NFL might still potentially suspend – it was like 13 minutes just for him to get through it.
11:34And it was like brother. Like what? It was so dramatic.
11:37Potentially. So dramatic in building this up. But every time he kept throwing out this potentially and Fitzy, we were like this is a nothing burger.
11:45If you actually listen to him talking, this is like a higher monetization on your X account.
11:50They changed the standards. You need to get more money.
11:53I didn't know what we were listening to. It's like okay, yeah, they're looking at this stuff.
11:57But he kept throwing the potentially out to all these guys which made me think like oh, this – I actually don't
12:04think there's anything that's going to lead to any of this.
12:07Yeah. The one name he mentioned where there – he does expect to see a suspension.
12:11I think we all knew this was James Pierce, the second-year pass rusher for the Falcons.
12:16We know that's coming. Which is kind of a problem since they just lost Jalen Walker to a torn ACL.
12:22The first thing I thought of when I saw that was Seth has a ticket for the Falcons to finish last place in the NFL.
12:29And like dude, he's had like a perfect run out so far.
12:32Like all their quarterbacks are hurt. They lost their two best defensive players from last year.
12:37They have no more pass rush again. I might have got the wrong bird.
12:41I might have picked the wrong bird to go 0-17 Erickson.
12:44I picked the Cardinals. I picked the wrong bird.
12:47It might be the Falcons. Yeah. So like we know the investigation of Josh Jacobs is still open.
12:52But the incident happened a long time ago and there haven't been any charges forthcoming.
12:56And I kind of doubt the NFL is going to levy any sort of suspension in the absence of charges against Jacobs.
13:02And I kind of feel the same way about Puka.
13:05So maybe it is just a big nothing burger.
13:08I should have listened to the interview right before we did this again because we listened to it like 10 minutes ago.
13:14And I had the cadence down. Like I've never heard something that was so dramatic over like two and a half minutes
13:20where he just – And it was just kept – the potentials were thrown out there.
13:25I actually feel a little bit better about watching it.
13:28When you read the reports, you're like, oh, man, the suspensions are still floating.
13:32After listening to that, it's like, no, we're just regurgitating information out there.
13:36Like sure, they're reviewing all of the stuff. But at the end of the day, you know, without any of the like
13:42locked conviction stuff that it does – Like where are the NFL really going to go?
13:47Unless like you said, Erickson, they're going to give Puka a week off to not travel to Australia.
13:52Yeah. Like how many games do you actually have to be concerned about like moving Puka down rankings where – I mean
13:58if you move this is one game, like I don't care.
14:01Do you really not care though? Like let me ask you – well, this is kind of a fantasy thing.
14:07But it's like I think there's a battle between like a Jamar Chase and a Puka Nakua.
14:12Puka Nakua is your number one wide receiver in the NFL this year.
14:15If you lose that first game, is that enough where you should boot him down and maybe have guys like JSN and Jamar Chase being over him?
14:23I think that you don't really move him unless it's like four games because – Four?
14:28You would move him even if it was three games?
14:31When he's playing, he's scoring the most points among all the receivers.
14:34I can figure out a couple weeks without Puka Nakua because I have the rest of my roster fully healthy and ready to go.
14:41Think about it. You could draft Puka Nakua even though he's going to be suspended for the first three games of the season.
14:47You draft Devo Samuel. There's your starting receiver in the meantime.
14:51Like I think that you can get around because – I mean Puka – I don't think anyone was drafting Puka expecting
14:57him to play all 17 games the way this guy plays.
15:00I mean I would not consider him a lock to be available for all 17 games.
15:05But the fact that you know ahead of time that you have to replace his production just early on in the season I think is very manageable.
15:12So I think that if he starts falling in drafts, you get him at the back of the round.
15:18I mean didn't we do this last year where everyone was concerned?
15:21It's like, oh, well Stafford's going to – his back is all messed up and Puka started falling and that was wrong.
15:28And Puka just smashed. Well, Puka wasn't biting people.
15:30He wasn't like biting just people randomly in public.
15:33But he was still playing like himself in terms of he plays like a psychopath and seems like he gets hurt in every single game he plays.
15:40He's a psychopath. I think psychopath might be the right answer in there.
15:44Should we be more worried about the Rams? I know we're spending a lot of time on this news, but there are some relevant news pieces.
15:52Should we be more worried about the Rams? Like where we had these like things last year and then they shut everybody
15:58up and now they were like it's a brutus defense and all this stuff.
16:02And then now like should we be a little bit more concerned?
16:05Like look at the depth of the wide receivers.
16:08Like are we comfortable enough, Fitzy? Yeah. Yeah. Alaric Jackson, their left tackle, another guy potentially facing discipline, a suspension.
16:14Maybe we should be. Speaking of that week one game, the 49ers are going to be really mad because apparently they gave
16:20the Rams first dibs of like choosing an opponent.
16:22And they chose the 49ers in large part because 49ers fans travel so well for those games.
16:27So often the Rams home games against the 49ers aren't really home games at all.
16:32So they figure why not move that one to Australia and lose this non-home game if we're going to lose a home game.
16:38So I know Kyle Shanahan has talked about not being very happy with the Rams decision to choose them.
16:44So, yeah, that game could be kind of a bloodbath in week one down under.
16:48Like Erickson said, there might not be any players.
16:51God knows. It just might be stripling. Easiest under you can ever bet.
16:54First NFL game in Australia. It practically writes itself.
16:57All these teams are injured. None of the offensive players are available.
17:00They're all hurt. Under. What do you think the line's going to be?
17:04It was at 49 and a half points the last time I checked.
17:08Yeah, it'll be high. With those two teams, you're going to get a high total.
17:12Oh, yeah. Smash. Smash now. I completely agree. It's just going to be a run fest.
17:17It's just going to be a run, run, run, run, run.
17:20It's only got left. The entire first half. They only have running backs.
17:23You know what? First half under. First quarter under.
17:26First drive under. All of them. Yeah, first drive under.
17:29Any under I will take. All of it. I'm totally with you.
17:32From the land down under, just play all the unders.
17:35From the Undertaker. So there's a three-way step there.
17:38Another big piece of news out there, and then I'll kind of burn through the other two.
17:43Kyler Murray was officially named the starting quarterback for the Vikings.
17:46Relatively expected on all parts. But, you know, it just makes official.
17:49And it casts a really large cloud over J.J.
17:52McCarthy. Though, Coach Kevin O'Connell did say that he believes that J.J.
17:55McCarthy, quote, has a future with the organization. Sure.
17:58Fitz, I think this is something you've been really dialed into.
18:01What are your thoughts on Kyler Murray taking over this spot?
18:04And do you actually believe that J.J. McCarthy has a future with the Vikings?
18:08I think it could be with another team. But do you think there's an actual future with the Vikings?
18:14I mean, the QB competition between Kyler and McCarthy was always a dog and pony show.
18:18Like, we knew in advance that that was just like the thumb was on the scale for Kyler Murray from the get-go.
18:24They brought him in to be the starter. What I'm interested in is whether J.J.
18:29McCarthy is the number two when the curtain goes up on the season.
18:32Because I think it might be Carson Wentz. But if he's not the number two, like, he's got to be shipped out.
18:39You've got to ship him out. You would think.
18:41It just doesn't seem like the way Kevin O'Connell sort of threw him under the bus a couple of weeks ago with
18:48some of the comments he made about the quarterback play in 2025.
18:51It just doesn't seem like J.J. McCarthy is long for Minnesota.
18:54Doesn't this, Erickson, doesn't this feel like the 49ers and Trey Lance?
18:58Where it's like they're going to, like, for two years be like, no, no, we love him, we love him.
19:03And then it's like J.J. McCarthy is going to be traded for, like, a fourth-round pick that could maybe move up to a third-round pick, like, next season.
19:11Like, that's where I think we're headed with this.
19:14I don't believe any of this nonsense. I think if they could get a fourth-rounder, Welsh, they'd trade him today.
19:20You think so? Yeah. For McCarthy? Yeah. Erickson, what do you think?
19:23J.J. McCarthy, future Jett, potentially. Jett's could use another quarterback to put behind Geno Smith.
19:27Let's make him a Fal... Atlanta Falcons. Let's have just Tua, Penix, and McCarthy just battle it out.
19:33Maybe they just make a trade with the Colts and be like, we'll take your backup quarterback that you don't want.
19:39Why don't you take our backup quarterback that we don't want, and we'll just, you know, see.
19:43I'd love that. Maybe it doesn't matter. Like, I don't know.
19:47Like, trade him for Anthony Richardson? Who knows? But, yeah, I kind of agree with Fitz here, where I think that McCarthy's
19:53more likely to just be the QB3. We'll see how he does in the preseason.
19:57I think that actually works in his favor, that now he can just play with no strap.
20:02It's like, got nothing to lose. Whereas, now all the pressure is on Kyler Murray.
20:06If this Vikings offense comes out with Kyler starting in the game, which we believe the report was O'Connell said that they're
20:13going to play their guys, and you know who they're playing?
20:16They're playing the New York Giants. John Harbaugh's team is going to be ready because he wants to win these preseason games.
20:22Anyone that's followed preseason betting or the Ravens over the past decade plus, Harbaugh takes these games very, very seriously and wants to win them.
20:29So, Kyler Murray's not going to get this, oh, vanilla defense, super easy, I can pad my stats.
20:34No, no, no. The whole world's going to be watching and see if he hits Justin Jefferson on those slant routes, on those post routes.
20:41And if he misses, oh boy, that Monday morning quarterback with the Vikings.
20:45Did they make the right decision to start Kyler Murray?
20:48Not off of the first preseason game, though. Well, how do we open the show about overreactions to the preseason?
20:54Are we going to do that? Do you really think anybody's going to do that?
20:58I'm not doing it. Nine passes for Kyler Murray are like two drives, and they're going to be like, McCarthy time.
21:04No, not McCarthy time, but I think that the Vikings organization is going to come under criticism about like, what are we doing here?
21:11Because all the reports out of the training camp were that none of these quarterbacks look good, and that McCarthy sometimes looked better than Kyler Murray.
21:18And the fact that O'Connell, when O'Connell decided that Kyler Murray was going to be the quarterback, he didn't say, yeah, you
21:25know, Kyler has got that it factor. He's really elevating the offense.
21:28He said, quote, he's shown enough. That seems like he kind of backdoor his way into getting the starting job and like,
21:34oh, we don't want to give it to McCarthy, so we're just going to give it to Kyler.
21:40I don't know, man. You can't manage quarterbacks in the NFL, and you can't get it right.
21:44You can't keep a job. And it's like, are you going to go out and draft your future franchise quarterback, and that's
21:51a huge failure in your face, and then you're going to go into free agency, or you're going to go into the
21:57trade market, you're going to get a guy like Kyler Murray, you're going to bring him in against that quarterback, and then they're both just okay.
22:04Like, this is the recipe to get the hell out of Minnesota.
22:08And that's the thing, because if Kyler Murray does succeed, they're going to have to give him the bag after this year.
22:14So they're either going to have to pay him a fortune or figure out some other way to get a new quarterback in the future.
22:21Has there been a more hyped failure in recent history, you can remember, over J.J.
22:26McCarthy? Like, think about the year of hype. A lot of people on J.J.
22:30McCarthy defending for 15 months, and it's a bigger fail.
22:33I mean, Trey Lance was kind of a big one.
22:35I remember Josh Rosen. Anthony Richardson. I don't think he was anymore.
22:39I mean, McCarthy wasn't like a top five pick.
22:41Like, he went outside the top 10. You would have thought he was the number one overall pick by the hype?
22:47I mean, maybe it's the fantasy community. But he was also like the fifth quarterback drafted in his class.
22:53I mean, he went before Bo Nix, right? So that's obviously, like, really bad in hindsight, of course.
22:58Yeah. Well, like, Caleb went in front of him.
23:01Daniels went in front of him. May went in front of him.
23:04The Vikings wanted May. They wanted to trade up to get May, and the Patriots, rightfully so, said, pound sand, we're taking Jake May.
23:11Ridiculous. It's just a ridiculous thing that we all knew was going to happen.
23:15We'll see how the Kyler Murray experiment, if he's just adequate or, you know, if we're going to be seeing J.J.
23:21McCarthy this year, even if it's a Viking. The other two pieces of news, Mike McDaniel, Chargers offensive coordinator, kind of laid
23:27a little bit of a bomb on people, especially for the fantasy community, saying that he's going to use all three of
23:33his running backs in a game-to-game run, and not just a little bit.
23:37And he essentially apologized to fantasy owners because he's like, I can't tell you who's going to be the guy that's going
23:43to go, but we're using all of these running backs.
23:46So quick hit on this. Fitzy, does this sting a little bit to a guy like O'Marrion Hampton, and is this a
23:53plus to a Keaton Mitchell, or is this a bunch of nothing?
23:56We'll see. I mean, it could be using all three of them means 20 carries a game for Hampton and a series
24:02each for Kamani Vidal and Keaton Mitchell. It could mean a greater split between the three than a lot of fantasy managers
24:09would like to see, at least the O'Marrion Hampton stakeholders.
24:12So I just, I think he's going to keep his cards close to the vest, and we're not really going to know
24:18until we see it play out, because there was that year where both Devon HN and Raheem Mostert had giant seasons.
24:24So we've seen him deploy multiple backs. He's kind of, Mike McDaniel's a little like Sean Payton in that regard.
24:30He likes to use all his running backs. Yeah, I kind of took the vibe, Erickson, that this was like, it's going
24:36to be Hampton all the time, but he's open to a hot hand, and if Vidal or Mitchell catch fire in a
24:42game, he's going to lean on them more. But this is still Hampton's backfield, and it feels a little coach-speaky.
24:48You know, every player is the greatest, and it's very, very coach-speaky to me.
24:52But I don't know. Do you buy into it at all?
24:55I kind of agree with your statement on it about the hot hand approach.
24:59I think that O'Marrion Hampton, as a first-run pick the year before, drafted by the same head coach and GM.
25:05Remember, Mike McDaniel's not the head coach. Like, he's the offensive coordinator, so Harbaugh still has a say, and Harbaugh took O'Marrion Hampton in the first round.
25:12Keaton Mitchell was obviously a player that Mike McDaniel liked a lot to bring in as a free agent, and obviously Vidal
25:19was very productive filling in for Hampton when he was hurt last year, but he was clearly behind Hampton on the depth chart when both guys were healthy.
25:27Like, Vidal was not a factor in the offense when Hampton was the healthy starter.
25:31So Hampton is obviously a bullish projection, right? Like, we're really trying to forecasting because you don't have a rookie season like
25:37he did and then get drafted in fantasy drafts where he's going now.
25:41Usually it doesn't follow that type of arc when you only play nine games and miss half the season.
25:47So I think that is something to kind of be just kind of keeping the back of your mind.
25:52But, dude, the upside with Hampton, when you especially look at the run, the charge could go on to start the year.
25:58Cardinals, Raiders, Bills. Like, you can't ask for a better start for a running back.
26:03So it's a situation where I think McDaniel is putting his players in a position where if you're the best and you're
26:09performing the best, you get the ball, which is what coaches should be doing, right?
26:13It shouldn't be like, well, you're going to get automatically 25 touches no matter what.
26:17That doesn't really make a lot of sense. If you're not playing well, then you shouldn't be getting the ball.
26:23But Hampton, I think, should get the first crack at it because he does have the draft pedigree.
26:28I think that he probably has the most talent, well-rounded skill set of the three running backs.
26:33But if he falters, then yeah, we're going to get other guys the ball if they're playing a little bit better than you are on a per-touch basis.
26:41But I think Hampton just is going to be in a situation where at least to start the year, it's going to be wheels up for him.
26:49The only thing I disagree with on that is there are just players out there that need volume.
26:54They need run. Like, you can't have the expectation that they are going to be big breakaway with seven touches and then you move away from them.
27:02Like, they're built around getting them 20 touches and they're going to beat down defenses.
27:06And once they get into that rhythm, they're going to find that hole and they're going to break it away.
27:12So if you start moving away from – not every guy is like that.
27:16We've seen plenty of players that it's like the Jamal Charles of the world where it's like, you know, small amount of touches.
27:22It's big breakaway stuff. But there are a lot of backs out there that they need the volume.
27:28They need the consistency. Do you think Hampton needs that?
27:30I mean, Hampton's got – he's got some explosiveness.
27:33I mean, he ran like a 4-4 or something.
27:36Like, he's got some speed. That's the – I think that's the question.
27:39I'm a little worried he might. Like, Keaton Mitchell is not.
27:42Like, that's the type of guy you bring in, you know, seventh play in the drive after Hampton has beat them down.
27:49They get a couple passes, Ladd McConkie, Quinton Johnson.
27:51And all of a sudden, Mitchell on a little bit of a tired defense in the third quarter, he's going to break away a 40-yard run.
27:59And then he becomes that hot hand. You take it away.
28:02I just don't know if we know enough about Hampton to say that he is that.
28:07But I think, you know, an overarching thing would be like not – like giving an NFL player the consistency, the rhythm
28:13to learn the holes, learn the defenses throughout a game, and just have opportunities is the best way to find success for the most talented players.
28:20So that's like my little argument against the just go with a hot hand and no player should be just given the
28:27opportunity even if they're not super efficient. It's like, well, the great players find efficiency, but sometimes it's not in the first and the second quarter.
28:34It could also be a little matchup dependent week to week because I know Marion Hampton was just talking about how much
28:40inside zone he's been seeing with this offense. And inside zone I think favors him.
28:45Outside zone, which we know has been kind of a staple of McDaniels running games in Miami, that might favor Keaton Mitchell a little more.
28:52So do you feel like you can attack a particular defense?
28:55Are they a little softer inside or outside? Like if they're going to attack a defense on the edges, maybe Keaton Mitchell
29:01gets more run that particular week, but maybe if there's a team that doesn't have, you know, very good defensive tackles or
29:07can maybe get bullied a little bit up the middle, that's more of a Hampton week.
29:12That would actually be a really interesting thing to track and study because that might be a way to get ahead of
29:18like when Keaton Mitchell is going to be efficient.
29:21Like if you're looking for spots of like, when could Keaton Mitchell take away from this exactly to what you said, it
29:27would be like stronger inside zone stuff where he's, they're going to have to bounce the ball outside.
29:32Those would be opportunities. I wonder if that'll track in this office.
29:36We're not going to know until we have a sample size.
29:39It might be half the season to be able to do that, but that would be like a really interesting thing.
29:45The last thing before we start breaking down some of these games in week one is Commanders Dan Quinn had confirmed, and
29:51we all know this by now, left tackle Laramie Tunsell is going to undergo surgery on his torn tricep, likely missing the season.
29:58And that's a huge blow to the Commanders. But how big, Andrew, how much should we be concerned about the Commanders?
30:04They brought down Stefan Diggs. Great. The offense is moving.
30:07But what level of effect should this have on a Jaden Daniels?
30:10And do you think this is going to slow down that offense a little bit, losing their big major offensive line piece?
30:16It makes me not want to draft Jaden Daniels anywhere in fantasy, even though they added Stefan Diggs.
30:22We saw last year a Chargers offense gutted by offensive line injuries and couldn't trust him, couldn't use Justin Herbert.
30:27And Jaden Daniels is where he goes in drafts as a top five fantasy quarterback.
30:32Yes, they added Diggs, which was a positive. But I think that losing Laramie Tunsell is such a massive negative, making this,
30:38I think, an average offensive line when he was healthy, now below average.
30:42They opened the schedule against the Philadelphia Eagles on the road.
30:45That is brutal. So Daniels is a slender guy, got hurt last year.
30:48I just feel like he's going to be running for his life.
30:52And maybe that translates to fantasy points sooner rather than later.
30:55But is it going to last? I'd rather have Justin Herbert give me the guy that just has a healthy offensive line,
31:01has all these weapons, litter with playmakers. It just feels so much better about his outlook.
31:06And you get him way, way, way later than Jaden Daniels.
31:09So and that's a that's a big move for me in shift because I didn't really want to move him because I think the rushing is so real.
31:17But man, like relying on two older receivers, Terry McLaurin's past age 30, Stephon Diggs past age 30, and then a bunch of unknowns behind those players.
31:25And then a bad offensive line, new offensive coordinator.
31:27It's just there's a lot of factors where I could just see this commander's thing like going south again, like last year,
31:34even though I thought it was going to be a bounce back.
31:37But I don't know. This has me really concerned.
31:40Fitzy, are you concerned enough that this should be a downgrade on the offense as a whole?
31:45Or do you think they can overcome this downgrade for the offense as a whole?
31:49Someone on Twitter a couple of weeks ago, and I apologize.
31:52I can't remember who, but they posted composite rankings for offensive lines based on the individual rankings from six different sources.
31:58The commanders were 26th and that was before the Laramie Tunsil.
32:01That was with Tunsil still in there. Yeah. So like it's just sad when you think of how excited we were about
32:07the future of the commander's offense after they had that surprise run in the playoffs and in 2024.
32:13And here we are two seasons later, and we're kind of terrified by what we're going to see.
32:18We've talked about this with the as I defended Aaron Glenn of not being the first head coach fired.
32:23The guy that was in the running is Dan Quinn because the commanders have a brutal schedule to start the year.
32:29Yeah. And the fact that they just lost their best offensive lineman, like Dan Quinn is on the hot seat.
32:35And it's. It's bad. You know, I keep thinking.
32:38This is what I want. This is what I want.
32:40I don't know if you guys know who I think it's Mike Kadic does stuff at Barstool.
32:45He was former Indiana offensive lineman. He had this video that went viral where he was just out at bars and he
32:52was doing his offensive line work, like doing the legs back.
32:55I want to see Brandon. I, you can make that video for his last plea to join the commanders where he's just like, he's like, I'll block.
33:02I'll, I'll be the offensive line. Like, bring me back.
33:05Like, that's what I need. That's what I need in my life.
33:09All right. Those are some of your news and notes.
33:12It went longer because there's a lot more to process and there's a lot of big stuff and there's going to continuously be as a preseason goes on.
33:20Speaking of which we are going to be breaking down some of the important stuff, what we're watching for in week one,
33:26and maybe what you guys can keep your eye on.
33:29But before we do, how about some giveaway? How about some hall of fame giveaway?
33:33Yes. If you, my friends love LaDainian Tomlinson, like I did, I loved watching LT grow up one of the best from

34:47What do you think it is now? It's images and words being spoken, captured by some sort of technology.
34:53Danny McBride. He loves boba. Oh, that's fantastic. And you make it on, you make your own.
34:58That's great. I call him Taro Reed. That's a good name.
35:01They're all named after cast members of American Pie.
35:03Yeah. I call, I don't, I never looked up if she was in this, but I call him Leachie Sobieski.
35:09Yeah. I don't think she was an American Pie, but I still like that.
35:13Haven't looked it up. Haven't looked it up. Yeah.
35:16She was prominent around the same time. Then Mary Steenburgen.
35:19Why are you guys talking to me? I'm worried.
35:21Why are you talking so down to me that you think I don't understand your little play game?

36:28But I'm also from Queens, which means I know pizza.
36:31And on my new podcast, Delivering Happiness with Nick Turturro, I deliver pizza.

37:07And listen now. All right. Let's talk about it.
37:09Preseason week one. We've got all the games. We've got all the action.
37:13There are going to be storylines that are going to build themselves.
37:17But going in, there's some stuff we want to look at.
37:20We've got a six-game slate on Thursday. A three-game slate on Friday.
37:23And then a nice full slate on Saturday. Obviously, depending when you're listening to this, you might be able to move in
37:29through the timeline here and the timestamps if Thursday's already happened.
37:33But there's a couple I definitely want to hit.
37:35And let's start with the Arizona Cardinal Raider game.
37:38The Las Vegas game. Because we already had some quarterback play out of Carson Beck, which has made it interesting.
37:43But a couple storylines in there. I think Fernando Mendoza kind of dominates this.
37:47So, Fitz, I'm going to start with you. Jump in.
37:50We'll just kind of do quick hits on this.
37:53What is important? And what are you looking for out of the Cardinals-Vegas game?
37:57That we have two of the top four draft picks playing against each other in this game.
38:02That they're both skilled position players with Fernando Mendoza and Jeremiah Love for the Cardinals.
38:06So, just to get our early look at these guys.
38:09And I kind of want to see how Mendoza looks.
38:12Because, yeah, it can be a rough ride for rookie quarterbacks in the NFL getting their first exposure to NFL defenses.
38:18Even if it's kind of watered down NFL defenses and teams playing a little vanilla.
38:22But we know Mendoza's a football nerd. He's going to be ready for this.
38:26So, I'm kind of anxious to see what he shows in his debut.
38:30Erickson, do you think there's a chance that Carson Beck could outshine Mendoza?
38:34And then all of the panic starts to go in where people are like, uh-oh, Mendoza.
38:38I'm just saying, like, Beck has got a game under him.
38:41He looks super efficient. The Cardinals let him be efficient.
38:44You're now going to have the top pick out there.
38:47Do you think there's going to be any little comparison game that's going to go on with these guys?
38:52And I imagine Mendoza's got to be at the top of what you're watching for in this game.
38:58Yes. Definitely want to watch Mendoza. Got to watch those under center snaps.
39:01See how he does getting the ball under center.
39:04Not something that he's necessarily used to coming from the college game.
39:07So, that's something to watch for. We're going to see all the replays of it through the ex-social media outlets.
39:13That'll be a lot of fun. But yeah, you're going to see that, of course, because it's two rookie quarterbacks going head-to-head.
39:19Beck had a good, great game against the Carolina Panthers.
39:22Of course, I bet on the Cardinals to win, and they lost on the last play of the game.
39:28So, shout out not to me. Can we note, though, if you guys watch them betting pros, Erickson, Bogman, and myself went on.
39:34The gameplays maybe didn't work, but the props, we swept the props.
39:38We hit every single prop in the preseason that we talked about, even though Bogman's was, and I think both of yours,
39:44was the very last second where King got the rushing yards.
39:47But give yourself some credit. Yeah, maybe the game didn't play out because that last, by the way, you had the Cardinals
39:53until that last play, but that last play cashed every single prop we did on that show.
39:58So, shout out to you and us and Carson Beck.
40:01Yeah, it was a fun game. But that being said, the Cardinals-Raiders, I think this will probably be high scoring.
40:07You know, on the betting pros show with Matt Modai and Joe Maddon, Joe really liked this game going over the total.
40:13And the total's already really high, like 40 and a half points.
40:17But the Cardinals look like they're going to try to score 30 points per game in the preseason because this might be
40:23the only chance they get to score 30 in a game this season.
40:27So, you've got to take the advantages when you can.
40:29So, yeah, this game should be pretty exciting. But will we see, like, the narrative where it's like all that?
40:35Because everyone's looking for anything to talk about. No, 100%.
40:38Remember, Adam Schefter's out here. He's like, potentially. If Beck has a better completion percentage than Mendoza, yeah, it'll be Beck's going
40:44to be the starter, et cetera, et cetera. Mendoza still has a lot to learn.
40:49Kirk Cousins is going to be the guy that's going to take this team to the halfway point three quarters of the
40:55way through the season, which I think is total BS.
40:58I think Mendoza is going to play way sooner rather than later because I've seen Kirk Cousins play.
41:03Like, dude, one of my favorite bets for week one is Miami Dolphins on the money line to beat the Raiders.
41:09Because they're facing Kirk Cousins. What a great game.
41:12What a great game. I love that that's your most excited game.
41:15This is the most Erickson thing of all time.
41:18Like, there's going to be all these, like, great games.
41:20Stuff's going to happen. And Erickson's going to be out here.
41:24Dolphins, Raiders. That's all I want. The last time Kirk Cousins faced the Dolphins, they destroyed – they lost for, like, 25
41:30points when he was with the Falcons last year.
41:32And everyone was betting against the Dolphins because they were the tank team last year.
41:37They were horrible. Backups all across the board. So many injuries.
41:40And they destroyed the Kirk Cousins Falcons team. You guys think there's no chance Mendoza during all these preseason games can do
41:46anything to take over that job week one? I think that they're just, like, digging their heels in with this Kirk Cousins thing.
41:53Yeah. Agreed. It doesn't matter. It's got to be real games that Kirk Cousins plays and makes them lose.
41:58Who's starting NFL games first? Fernando Mendoza or Carson Beck?
42:01Fernando. Yeah. Mendoza. Just wait for it. Just wait for Beck time.
42:04All right. How about the Chargers and the Houston Texans?
42:07The thing that jumped out to me, and you guys might have a couple other things.
42:12Erickson, we'll start with you on this. Is that the offensive scheme?
42:15Like, what McDaniel is going to do to the Chargers offense?
42:18I don't know how much. And that was kind of what I was alluding to earlier in the show, where it was
42:25like, where do you think the schemes are going to come into play?
42:28And how much can we read new schemes in preseason games?
42:32And do you feel comfortable with it? I'm very curious to see what this is going to look like.
42:37So, I mean, that's the number one thing for me, is what McDaniel's offense is going to look like.
42:43And is it going to play out properly in this preseason week one?
42:46But what say you? I don't think we're going to see much, to be honest.
42:51I think that Harbaugh has said that they're going to warm up their starters, but then none of them are going to play.
42:57And it's just going to be... And I'm not talking just starters, by the way.
43:01I'm saying offensive scheme, not just starters. I don't think we're going to see the motion stuff.
43:06I don't think we're going to see any type of unusual to point.
43:10Because all those guys are starters. I think the biggest thing that we can see is Oranda Gadsden out there with the backups.
43:17And we're like, oh no, this guy is not actually a starter.
43:20It's Charlie Kolar and David Njoku show. And Gadsden is buried.
43:23That's something I'm keeping an eye on. Because going back to overarching points in terms of preseason usage, a lot of it can be noisy.
43:30The one thing that has, I think, the most action into the regular season is something that Nathan Yonke has done a really great job over at PFF.
43:38Is the tight end usage. I've avoided some really bad landmines because of paying attention to the preseason usage of certain players.
43:45A couple years ago, I really liked Evan Ingram.
43:47And it was like, oh my god, this is terrible.
43:50You've got to get out. And I was able to get out of it just in the nick of time before really
43:56committing to him as one of my fantasy tight ends.
43:59And he ended up being a total bust because he just wasn't playing enough.
44:03And he wasn't running enough routes. And that was very clear based on how he was used during the preseason games.
44:09Fitzy, what do you think? Chargers, Texans, is there a big thing that you're going to be paying attention to?
44:15And what should we watch for in this game?
44:18We might not see much. I mean, this would be a great matchup in the regular season.
44:22Maybe not so much in the preseason. But I am kind of curious if the Texans give some reps to their starting offensive line.
44:29Just because there are so many new pieces. Rookie Keelan Rutledge at center.
44:33Free agents. Wyatt Teller at left guard. And Braden Smith at right tackle.
44:37So I would love to see how that unit plays together.
44:40If, in fact, they do get to play any snaps together.
44:43Three other games on Thursday. You've got Detroit versus Cincinnati.
44:46You've got Green Bay versus Pittsburgh. So there's a little Fitzy versus Bogman.
44:50And then you've got the Titans versus my 49ers.
44:52I will throw out, because I'm going to just throw out all three of these games because then we can move to the Friday games.
44:59I mean, for whatever seriousness you want to take Grant Cohen and what he does with the 49ers coverage if you're paying attention to beat writers and nonsense.
45:07Cohen has spent the entire week, which is shocking, by the way, because sometimes he just spends his time just being negative.
45:14There's so many. By the way, isn't it crazy how many people out there are team coverage and they're just the most negative about teams?
45:21I remember, I think it was Tim Kawasaki, or I think it was, used to be like that with San Francisco-based teams.
45:27Like, you always have these reporters that are just they hate the teams that they cover.
45:32Cohen's always been negative. But Cohen has spent the entire week talking about how Stribbling has outperformed Carnell Tate.
45:37So that's something that's on my eyes. Like, Carnell Tate looks like a freak.
45:41Obviously, he was drafted high for a reason. But it has been, oh, Stribbling.
45:45Dejan Stribbling has been just so much better. And he's going to be the best receiver on the 49ers.
45:51And this, you know, hopefully theoretical opportunities we're going to see both of these guys kind of in live action.
45:56So I don't necessarily know if it's Stribbling versus Tate, but that's kind of an important one that I'm going to be hyper-focused on.
46:03Also a little bit selfish. Fitzy, between these three games, you can pick the Tennessee, you can pick the same thing.
46:09Tennessee, San Francisco, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cincinnati. Let us know something that we should be eyeing for in week one preseason between these three games.
46:17I mean, I want to see, obviously, as a Packers fan, I'm going to be biased.
46:21I want to see how Marshawn Lloyd looks. Because he has been felled by one injury after another since coming into the league.
46:28But when he did come into the league, Daniel Jeremiah said Marshawn Lloyd was his favorite pack in the class.
46:33And apparently, like, he's impressed in training camp so far.
46:36They call him the Yeet Cannon. And the coaches have kind of been talking him up.
46:41First, I want to see if he can make it through the game healthy.
46:45But I want to see if he is maybe a viable backup to Josh Jacobs.
46:49And if he can give the Packers offense a little bit of explosion in the backfield.
46:54We know Josh Jacobs is one of the best inside runners in football.
46:58But, like, there's not a lot of burst there.
47:00He's not going to be breaking off many 50- or 60-yard runs.
47:04Maybe Marshawn Lloyd can give them that. And, of course, I want to see what Jonathan Gannon's defense looks like.
47:09And Jonathan Gannon isn't going to use all the wrinkles in the first preseason game.
47:14But I think we'll get some idea of how it's going to differ from the Jeff Halfley offense.
47:19By the way, Tim Kawakami, not Kawasaki. I'm an idiot.
47:22But he does hate the team. That I do know.
47:24He absolutely hates the team. All these beat reporters that just hate the teams that they cover.
47:29Eric, same thing on these three games on Thursday.
47:32Is there an important factor you're looking at, or at least that you're going to be focused on for this week one in the preseason?
47:39Also looking forward to seeing Marshawn Lloyd out there.
47:42And the Packers trying to be careful with the amount that they use him in the preseason.
47:46But also acknowledge because, hey, this guy might need to actually have a role.
47:50Because right now, our starting running back is facing legal issues.
47:54And also an MCL injury of some sort. I think that they have to go into the season.
47:59And it fits correctly, or if you disagree. But they have to have some idea of some contingency plan if Jacobs won't be available.
48:06Whether it's due to injury because he got banged up at the end of last year.
48:10Whether it's due to suspension. They have to have some vision of, okay, we might have to actually use Marshawn Lloyd in a role this year.
48:18Even if it's a complementary role to Jacobs. Because the Jews got juice.
48:21Again, the very limited sample size of Marshawn Lloyd playing in the NFL.
48:25He had juice. And then he obviously got hurt right after.
48:28So that's something that I'm looking forward to seeing.
48:31And then, of course, my Patriots. Want to see how my Pats do.
48:35How the depth pieces look against the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night.
48:38My main player that I'm looking at is the tight end they drafted out of Notre Dame.
48:43Eli Raritan. He's been pretty buzzy at camp. Now, some of that has some cold water was poured on his dynasty outlook.
48:49Because they signed Hunter Henry to a two-year extension.
48:52Which is obviously unfortunate for those that invested in Eli Raritan as the future tight end one in this offense.
48:57But as we've seen this NFL wave of multiple tight end sets.
49:01I don't think that is like the total death nail on Eli Raritan.
49:05Maybe Hunter Henry evolves into more of a blocking tight end as he starts to get up there in age.
49:10And Raritan takes over as a main receiving threat.
49:13Which I know that he has the upside and athleticism to do.
49:16Versus a player like Hunter Henry. Who is more of a stable, reliable target.
49:20Not someone that's super dynamic or great after the catch.
49:23Which is a very, very solid asset to have.
49:26So, that's what I'm looking forward to seeing with the Patriots and the Colts.
49:30Over on the Friday set of games. The slate of games.
49:33We've got Denver versus Atlanta. Tampa Bay versus the Jets.
49:36And Miami versus Washington. I think we've kind of set the stage on Miami versus Washington.
49:40And I'm kind of hyper-focused, I guess, on Florida wide receivers.
49:44Are we going to thirst for Hurst in the Tampa Bay game?
49:47And what do those Miami wide receivers look like?
49:50Are we going to see how much of Caleb Douglas and how that's going to be shining?
49:54But Fitzy, we'll go to you here. For the Friday slate of games, you've got three here.
49:59I think there's a bunch of pieces. But what's going to be your hyper-focus on what we should be looking for?
50:05I would love to see some of the Jets rookies with this youth movement they have.
50:10David Bailey, the early pick, the edge rusher. Kenyon Sadiq, Omar Cooper Jr., D'Angelo Pons, Cade Klubnik.
50:15Hopefully, we see all these guys get some run.
50:17Because, you know, the Jets don't expect to go anywhere this year.
50:21But these guys are part of the foundation they're trying to build.
50:24And then Denver. I know Pat Bryant has been getting a lot of buzz, as has been, as you mentioned, Welsh, Caleb Douglas in Miami.
50:31I think he's the only rookie wide receiver of the three or more rookie receivers the Dolphins have on the roster, who's
50:38listed as a starter on their first depth chart.
50:40But Denver, I know that Cody Mayne of Establish the Run has mentioned that, and he's showed the data, that Sean Payton
50:46plays his starters in the preseason at one of the highest rates in the league and plays them a fair amount in preseason week one.
50:54So we might get a pretty good look at Denver's first team offense.
50:57And Pat Bryant getting a lot of buzz. I know they brought in Jalen Waddell, and they've still got Cortland Sutton.
51:03But it sounds like Bryant is kind of running away with the wide receiver three spots.
51:08Anxious to see if he does anything in this game against the Falcons.
51:12Especially if it's more than blocking, too. If they're actually going to let him get that athleticism, let him get up for
51:18the ball and see if he's going to be used in it.
51:21But Erickson, same thing. Denver, Atlanta, Tampa Bay Jets, Miami, Washington.
51:25We both set a couple little stages on some stuff here.
51:28What's important for you out of this Friday slate?
51:30It's Greg Dolce, tight end one. That's all I care about.
51:33You know, it's funny when you said the tight end thing earlier.
51:37I was like, what happens when Dolce gets like five targets in the first quarter?
51:41Like, is that going to meet your move away from tight ends?
51:45The pants are going to be off. The pants are going to be off.
51:49Making sure it's not on camera, please. But all right.
51:51Yeah, that does seem like your guy. So expand, please.
51:54I just want to see if he has that like full time role as the tight end one.
51:59So running all the routes. Basically, I'm just hoping, praying that Nathan Yonke posts that Greg Dolce ran a route on all seven of Malik Willis's dropbacks.
52:0775% target share whenever Malik Willis. That's all I need.
52:10And then I can just log off and not have to watch this game.
52:14That's fair. I mean, you're invested. You are highly invested.
52:17If you guys aren't on the fantasy side, know that it is Dolce's season for Andrew Erickson.
52:22Saturday, we've got a bunch. I'll jump to a couple individuals and then I'll kind of open it up here.
52:27I want to do a little hyper focus on the Rams and the Chiefs game.
52:32That's obviously like from a name perspective, that's going to be really good.
52:35There's just been so much fun stuff out of there.
52:38Specifically, I got to throw out and I guess I'm like really hyper focused.
52:42My brain goes to fantasy a lot, but also hyper focused on wide receivers.
52:46But the Cyrus Allen stuff, I just want to see the usage.
52:50I think that's probably my biggest focus here. I just don't know what we're going to see out of the Rams as kind of mentioned before.
52:57This is not going to play anybody. I don't know if there's any scheme things that are important.
53:02Maybe obviously seeing Ty Simpson. But Cyrus Allen is the one that I really, really am going to be honed in on.
53:09See what that usage looks like. Where is he if he's potentially playing?
53:12Where is he going to be? Is it going to be early on?
53:16Is it going to be in the first quarter?
53:19Is it going to be heavy through the third?
53:21So Erickson, why don't you hit us with the Rams and the Kansas City?
53:25What should we be looking at? I like the Rams.
53:28I like the Rams cover in this game. If you look at the Chiefs historically in week one, this has been one
53:34of the biggest edges in preseason betting is betting against the Chiefs against the spread in week one, especially with it not having Mahomes, right?
53:42Andy Reid has not been shy about playing his starters in the preseason.
53:45He's already talked about saying that we're not going to probably see Mahomes in week one, although he didn't close the door
53:52on him playing preseasons weeks twos and three, which is crazy to me that you would put this guy coming off a
53:58season ending injury out in a preseason game. That does not matter.
54:01But he's a Super Bowl winning head coach and I am not.
54:05So I'm not going to disagree with Andy Reid that much.
54:08I'm kind of interested to see Ty Simpson, to be honest.
54:11I mean, this is the one rare occasion where we have a Rams quarterback that's going to play.
54:16It's not some guy that we've never heard of because when you turn on these preseason games, the Rams quarterback is usually someone that who is this guy?
54:24Yeah, some guy running around CFL attempting 40 passes per game.
54:27And I'm not sure if this has been updated since they've last talked to Sean McVay, but he also didn't rule out Stenson Bennett playing in this game.
54:35So I think that you could actually get some decent Rams quarterbacks here.
54:39There's a chance we get a chance to look at Jarquez Hunter, the running back they drafted last year, Max Clare, the
54:45title they drafted this year, because those guys don't have project to have roles this season.
54:50And that's what the Rams always go away from is anyone that's going to be relevant to the team this year.
54:56But in future years, you get to look and see, OK, how will this guy be used potentially in 2027 and beyond?
55:02Which we know the Rams are at least looking at after they drafted Ty Simpson in the first round.
55:08So this is Simpson's time to get reps and play.
55:11And I think that he's going to play well.
55:13Fitzy, you were kind of shaking your head when I was talking about Cyrus Allen.
55:17Is that the only rookie, though, with the Chiefs that we should be hyper-focused on?
55:22No, I want to see Emmitt Johnson and whether he can claim the backup running back role behind Kenneth Walker III.
55:28So Emmitt Johnson was kind of a do-everything back from Nebraska.
55:31Nebraska, smaller, but they gave him a lot of work.
55:34He kind of reminds me of Chase Brown in that regard, a guy who handled a big load, not being necessarily a
55:40big dude, but kind of did it all for the Cornhuskers.
55:43And yeah, that Stetson-Bennett-Ty Simpson dynamic is kind of interesting because, I mean, Matthew Stafford's an older quarterback.
55:48They might not have Alaric Jackson for a while.
55:51Like, what happens if Matthew Stafford misses time? Are they going to feel good about playing a few games or maybe more with Simpson and Bennett?
55:58Or do they maybe throw up the bat signal for like Jimmy Garoppolo if things don't look good for the Rams in preseason week one?
56:06You know, this isn't like the most exciting game necessarily on paper, but I think this is a very fantasy pros game.
56:12Jacksonville, New Orleans. You know, there's a lot of high expectations with New Orleans from our guy Debro, who has, you know,
56:18made them maybe be a potential like offensive powerhouse.
56:21I think the Jags are already where some of this assumption is in, you know, the high expectations of all of these big playmakers.
56:28How much, Fitzy, do you think we are going to see and questions answered from this game as far as like the Jacksonville running back situation?
56:35The wide receivers? I mean, all eyes on at every moment on Parker Washington.
56:39And then as well, like, you know, are the Saints going to be as efficient?
56:43So what do you think we are going to get from both of these teams in week one?
56:48Yeah, Basial Tootin and Chris Rodriguez Jr. are listed as co-starters on the Jaguars first depth chart.
56:53So we'll see if Liam Cohen tries to audition those guys in preseason week one.
56:58I'm not quite sure how Cohen approaches the preseason.
57:00I do know Kellen Moore does kind of play his starters quite a bit in the preseason.
57:05So it's going to be interesting to see if we get a look at Jordan Tyson for an extended period.
57:11Erickson, same thing. What do you think? What questions will have been answered from this as far as are Jaguars real?
57:17Is Parker Washington the guy, the running back situation, the Saints?
57:20Are they going to be an offensive power? Do you think we are going to have any type of answer to any of that stuff from this game?
57:28I think the Jaguars, it'll probably be more telling who doesn't play than who does play because Cohen coming from the Sean
57:34McVay coaching tree, McVay doesn't play his starters or anybody relevant or important to his team in the preseason.
57:40And at least when I remember from last year when Cohen was the coach, they kept things pretty close to the vest
57:46when it came to their player development. I don't think they want anyone to know what they're doing in terms of, well,
57:52how are they going to use Travis Center? Is he going to be on offense or is he going to be on defense?
57:59Well, find out week one when we face the Cleveland Browns.
58:02Like that's, I think that's what they want to do.
58:05They want to be different. And I think that's part of the allured upside of the Jaguars team, but also the frustration
58:11when it comes to parsing out their backfield and their receiver room, right?
58:15These are two of the most ambiguous, this is probably the most ambiguous skill position between running backs and receivers in the NFL is the Jacksonville Jaguars.
58:23We know it's talented, which is why I just draft Trevor Lawrence, right?
58:26You don't have to figure anything else out. Outscored every single quarterback in fantasy points from week five onward last year and you profit.
58:33So I don't know if Jacksonville, it'll be more telling.
58:36And if guys are playing in this game, I think that's actually bad for their projection.
58:41No, I like that you said that the good old, like, you know, what you, the no news is best news type
58:47of thing is like when you don't see the guys, it's actually a plus in them not wanting, uh, you know, any
58:53inner injury potential or that they feel really comfortable.
58:56A slew of other games, uh, Carolina Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago.
58:59We've talked about Minnesota and the giants at a decent amount with the McCarthy stuff.
59:03Um, you've got Philly and Baltimore and Dallas and Seattle.
59:06So Fitzy, I'm going to throw it to you to start.
59:09You can pick what game should get our focus of that leftover group that we've talked about.
59:14Is there a storyline? Is there an important factor that we want to hone in coming off of this week?
59:20Yeah. Um, maybe Browns bears. Like I want to see if there's anyone who can step up on the bears defense, because
59:26there are certainly questions about the front seven for Chicago and now safety Kobe Bryant is going to miss four to six months with a knee injury.
59:34So they're looking for answers and you know, they might have to go deep into the depth chart to find them.
59:40And then I kind of want to, I want to see if the legend of Denzel Boston, who's reportedly lighting it up
59:46in training camp is, uh, you know, to, to be believed.
59:49God, don't you want to, you want to see Concepcion and Boston just together?
59:53Like to see them, you see that run that wide receiver core.
59:57I totally with you. So the remainder games, uh, for you as well, Erickson, you got to pick one and there's a storyline or two out of it.
60:05That is just super important for you. Which game are you picking?
60:08I want to co-sign with what Fitz said about these Browns skill players because they have four quarterbacks.
60:13They go pretty deep when it comes to Shader, Deshaun, Dylan Gabriel, and then Taylor green.
60:18Like he's another fun. I mean, he's going to be in the fourth quarter frigging slinging it.
60:23Like, like that can be like pretty fun against a bears defense that is already the starters are terrible up and down this.
60:29I mean, the bears are going to be the most shootout team in NFL history.
60:33They might be there. I have to score 35 points per game last year's Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, et cetera.
60:39So I think that that can get pretty fun to watch the skill position players for the Browns.
60:44And then the other game is the Vikings and giants just because Harbaugh, he rides his guys in these preseason contests.
60:50So is Kim Scadaboo going to play? I don't know.
60:53Is Jackson dark going to play? I don't know.
60:56But like the way, historically speaking, that Harbaugh has conducted these games is he wants to win.
61:01So I think that the Vikings offense is going to be held to a higher standard that you normally not seen preseason.
61:07And I'm just kind of here for the chaos of Kyler Murray looking horrible in his first preseason action and McCarthy lighting
61:13up the Giants defense in the second half and just the aftermath of that, because this whole situation with the quarterbacks and
61:20Kevin O'Connell, they made a massive mistake by not bringing back Sam Darnold.
61:23And now they're paying for it, trying to figure out what exactly they're going to do.
61:28So I'm interested to see how this kind of shakes out with this Vikings QB carousel, because just going back to the
61:34quote that I mentioned before, when he just said like he showed enough, like, I don't know, that just made me feel
61:40like, oh, so we just gave it to Kyler Murray.
61:43Like this wasn't real competition. And I don't know.
61:46I feel like in a competitive sport like this, having that fake competition like that, it's going to come back to bite
61:52them, like making it not actually like playing the best quarterback.
61:55I'm not saying game heart they was, but for Kyler, just be like, yeah, I guess you're like, you'll just get out of the starting quarterback job.
62:03I don't know. It just kind of rubs me the wrong way.
62:06It has the vibes of like if a reporter were to text and be like, you know, hey, how is Kyler Murray really earned that job?
62:14Are you comfortable with it? And they just send like a thumbs up.
62:18Like, like that's the equivalent of like a thumbs up emoji.
62:21You know what I'm saying? Like, that's how I feel.
62:24A long time ago on a podcast that my buddy Seely ran, someone asked like, oh, you know the Welsh?
62:29And that person was like, sure, it's the same vibe.
62:32You know, it's the same vibe. It's like a little bit more confidence in it, but it's thumbs up emoji doesn't do anything for me for Kyler Murray.
62:40And I agree with you. I'm watching that entire thing.
62:43You mentioned it a couple of times, just a promotion for it.
