Player insights

41

Aaron Rodgers

PositiveUsage63:24

Rodgers has three straight games with three touchdowns, though much of that production is driven by his receivers being so good after the catch; he had 22 of 31 passes for 235 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions last week with just 4.1 air yards per attempt (his lowest single-game average this season), showing he's relying on playmakers to create after catch.

Insight page

Ben Johnson

PositiveRole55:00

The source has faith in Ben Johnson's ability to manage the Bears offense and game plan, particularly with Caleb Williams as his quarterback. Johnson's success depends on having a balanced offense that can run the ball effectively; when the Bears can establish the run game (as they did against Carolina in week one), the offense is more effective. Against Atlanta, which has been great at defending the run, Johnson will need Caleb to be in the game to take pressure off the run game and allow for a more balanced approach.

Insight page

Bijan Robinson

PositiveUsage14:00

Robinson gets a lot of rushing yards over expected because he breaks tackles, contributing to his team's first-place ranking in rush yards over expected through five weeks.

Insight page

Brock Bowers

PositiveProjection6:00

Bowers is the only player to rank in the top five in yards per route run from both the slot (3.2, fifth) and out wide (3.9, fourth), essentially functioning as a receiver rather than a traditional tight end. He is arguably the most effective receiver in the league so far this year and has been able to carry the load for the Raiders passing game; the source projects he will have the highest contract of the 2024 draft class and could make a strong case for a lucrative second contract given his utilization and the rising cap for receivers.

Insight page

Brock Purdy

PositiveProjection63:38

Purdy has played fantastic football all year long; he did get picked off once last week by Mike McDonald's Palms call with Nehemiah Pritchett, but other than that played a really efficient game.

Insight page

Bryce Young

PositiveProjection63:30

Young is top 5 if not top 3 in passing yards, completion percentage above expected, and EPA per dropback all against zone coverage; he is playing like an assassin this year and is playing with such confidence that it's hard to bet against him.

Insight page

Bucky Irving

PositiveUsage64:03

Irving had crazy runs in Tampa's win over Dallas last week; without those explosive runs from Irving, Tampa might not have even won that game against a Cowboys team that played horribly.

Insight page

C.J. Stroud

PositiveProjection50:45

CJ Stroud has been great this year and spreads the ball around so much in the Texans offense that even if cornerback Travis Hunter has a great day against one receiver, there are enough targets and weapons for Stroud to still have a good day through the air. The source notes that Stroud's lack of a run game hasn't necessarily affected him much—he's been great this year despite Houston's inability to run the ball effectively.

Insight page

Caleb Williams

PositiveProjection54:12

The source believes Caleb Williams will play this week against Atlanta based on the pregame workout he did, where the Bears appeared close to letting him go but wanted to be cautious to ensure no complications. The difference in quarterback play between Caleb Williams and Michael Penix is big enough that the source believes the Bears are going to win this game, though not with high confidence. Caleb's presence can affect the run game for Chicago—when Caleb plays, the offense is more balanced and can establish the run game better, as evidenced by the Carolina game in week one where Caleb was great and the run game was dominant.

Insight page

D.J. Moore

PositiveRole60:56

McMillan (D.J. Moore) is playing more than fantastic and has been unbelievable, especially now that he's getting more reps in the slot where he is just eating people alive.

Insight page

Darnell Washington

PositiveRole63:25

Washington is a woolly mammoth at tight end for Pittsburgh; you give him the ball and let him rumble because he's just impossible to bring down by himself, making him a key part of the Steelers' formula where Rodgers doesn't have to make crazy throws.

Insight page

Denzel Boston

PositiveRole58:23

Denzel Boston has been awesome for the Cleveland Browns; the source notes that the Browns have been very good at getting yards after the catch, and Boston is part of that young talent that has played really well this year.

Insight page

Deshaun Watson

NegativeMatchup59:19

Deshaun Watson was pressured on 26 of his 44 dropbacks against the Jets last week, which is almost a 60% pressure rate and the second highest pressure rate Watson has faced in a single game since 2018. This was the most pressure an Aaron Glenn team has generated since he took over for the New York Jets. The Ravens' pass rush, while not the best it's been over the last half decade, can still rattle Watson and the Browns offense, especially if the Ravens' offense is playing at a high level.

Insight page

Jalen Hurts

NegativeProjection60:01

Jalen Hurts is still doing a nice job of avoiding the big negatives and escaping pressure when it's in the pocket versus an offensive line that's not ideal or not typical of a Philly offensive line over the last half decade. The Eagles can throw it deep, especially outside the numbers because Hurts is good at that. However, the source notes they don't do these things consistently this year—even though they're good at it, they don't do them consistently.

Insight page
NegativeRole61:01

Hurts is doing a nice job avoiding big negatives and escaping pressure against a non-ideal offensive line; the Eagles can throw it deep, especially outside the numbers where Hurts is good, but they don't execute these things consistently this year despite being capable of them.

Insight page

James Cook

NegativeUsage35:00

James Cook has been a victim of the league-wide forced fumble trend, losing the ball multiple times in recent games. The source highlights Cook as an example of ball security issues, noting that he had his second fumble of a particular night forced by Nate Landman. The source states: 'Back to Cook. And this time, ball comes out! His second fumble of the night! Landman forced it and it's another fumble for James Cook.' This reflects Cook's vulnerability to the coordinated defensive emphasis on punch-out techniques.

Insight page

Jayden Daniels

PositiveUsage63:39

Daniels was excellent as a scrambler when he was back in the game against Seattle; the Commanders saw more explosive plays when Jaden was in, though the 49ers have the linebackers to handle his scrambling ability.

Insight page

Jaylen Warren

NegativeUsage64:04

Warren has been dominant in space this year; nobody has been able to do anything about Jalen Warren in space so far this season, making him a major concern for Tampa Bay's defense.

Insight page

Jordan Love

NegativeMatchup20:00

Love has struggled against the Minnesota Vikings' defense (which features Mike Pettin's influence from 2023-2025) with 7.2 yards per attempt, 60.6 completion percentage, negative 3.9 completion percentage over expected, and negative EPA per drop back since 2023. The source notes that Pettin, now hired by the Cowboys, was an assistant head coach and outside linebackers coach for Minnesota during Love's tenure as starter.

Insight page
NegativeMatchup20:07

Against Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores since 2023, Love has posted 7.2 yards per attempt, 60.6% completion percentage, negative 3.9 completion percentage over expected, and negative EPA per drop back; versus all other defenses in the same span, he averages 7.6 yards per attempt, 64.6% completion, positive completion percentage over expected, and positive EPA per drop back. Flores' Vikings have used double-mugged looks (linebackers walked up to line of scrimmage) on 12.7% of plays overall and 25.4% on third down—both first in NFL—and specifically against the Packers 28.8% versus 24.9% against all other teams. On deep ball attempts against Flores, Love has a 33.3% success rate versus 38.6% against all other coordinators despite similar deep rate percentages (13.6% vs. 13.1%). In 2024 against the Vikings with Mike Pettin as outside linebackers coach, Love threw three interceptions in a single game—two from double-mugged looks and another incomplete pass that could have been intercepted from a double-mugged pressure; this is one of only two times Love has thrown three interceptions in a single game in his career.

Insight page
PositiveUsage63:40

Love threw it all over the yard in the Packers' recent victory over the Chicago Bears, especially deep down the field, showing his ability to attack vertically.

Insight page

Josh Allen

PositiveUsage0:02

Allen leads the league in scramble rushing yards at 202 through five weeks and ranks top six in scramble rush yards in every season since joining the league; he had 9 scrambles in 5 quarters against the Rams and is one of the best scrambling quarterbacks ever, comparable to Steve Young and Michael Vick. The source notes his ability to break games wide open when nothing is open downfield, turning missed tackles into 10-30 yard gains.

Insight page
PositiveMatchup63:34

Allen has a 105.7 passer rating against cover three this year with 8.5 yards per attempt and 5.2% completion percentage over expected; he's very efficient against this coverage and has a bunch of targets that are really good at finding soft spots in the zone, especially against cover three.

Insight page
PositiveUsage63:35

Allen got 120 yards rushing on Monday night against the Rams because they were bad at rush lane discipline, giving him seams to step up through the front door.

Insight page

Justin Herbert

NegativeProjection62:45

Herbert has looked unfocused and is throwing the easiest interceptions of his entire career; even for people who criticize him at the highest level, the interceptions he's throwing this year are totally different and at a different level than anything he has attempted before—it's like he's just not seeing defenders.

Insight page

Kenneth Walker III

PositiveUsage14:00

Walker gets a lot of rushing yards over expected because he breaks tackles, contributing to his team's strong rushing performance.

Insight page

Kirk Cousins

NegativeProjection63:35

When comparing top-line quarterback play, Kirk Cousins and the Raiders are not at the same level as Josh Allen and the Bills; a couple weeks ago the gap seemed fairly close, but after last week it's less so.

Insight page

Kyle Pitts

PositiveRole53:33

Kyle Pitts (referred to as 'Bichon' in the transcript) is incredible and a key part of the Falcons offense. In the overtime loss to Baltimore, Pitts was matched up in space against 40-year-old Calais Campbell on a crucial third-and-five play that could have clinched the game, but Penix missed the throw. Pitts remains a consistent weapon for Atlanta.

Insight page

Kyler Murray

NegativeRole38:00

The Vikings offense is struggling with explosiveness despite a 5-0 record, and Kyler Murray's role is constrained by the lack of run-game success and the team's reluctance to attack over the middle of the field. The source notes that Murray is not the tallest quarterback in the league, so the offensive line must be manipulated at times to enable him to attack over the middle with regularity. The Vikings have only an 11.1% explosive play rate (bottom 10 in NFL), 7.1% explosive designed run rate (ninth lowest), and only 10% intermediate in-breaker target rate (lowest in entire league). The source states: 'Kyler's not the tallest quarterback in the league. And, so, you kind of have to manipulate the offensive line a little bit at times in order for him to want to attack over the middle of the field with regularity.' However, the source also notes that Murray had 'a really nice game' last week and that the offense in its current form should be enough for the Vikings to make the postseason.

Insight page

Lamar Jackson

NegativeInjury57:21

As of the time of this broadcast, it is unclear whether Lamar Jackson will be back for the Ravens' game against Cleveland; the source notes that whether it's Huntley or Lamar at quarterback for Baltimore, they have confidence in the Ravens' ability to execute the offense because they are still the number one offense in the entire league in terms of success rate, even after starting Snoop against a good Falcons defense.

Insight page

Malik Nabers

NegativeInjury8:15

Nabers has been great when healthy but suffered a major injury that has limited his availability; the source notes he is part of a disappointing 2024 wide receiver class despite his talent.

Insight page

Mark Andrews

NegativeUsage32:00

Mark Andrews' fumble is cited as an example of the league-wide emphasis on forced fumbles through coordinated defensive technique. The source notes that Andrews' fumble demonstrates how defenders are being taught to maintain fundamental form while wrapping up ball carriers and simultaneously attempting to punch the ball out. The source states: 'The Mark Andrews fumble is a great example where he's coming in to make the tackle. You could tell he's not abandoning his form.' This reflects the evolution of defensive technique toward integrated punch-out methodology.

Insight page

Marvin Harrison Jr.

NegativeDepth Chart8:15

Harrison Jr. was traded by the Cardinals within his first three years, making him only the third top-five pick to be traded within his first three years in the last 17 years—a very rare occurrence. He exemplifies the disappointing 2024 wide receiver draft class.

Insight page
NegativeRole50:16

The Texans traded for Marvin Harrison Jr., and while the source notes this isn't the biggest factor in their matchup against Jacksonville, Harrison Jr. is potentially positioned as the new X receiver for Houston, with Nico Collins being used as a moving chess piece in the offense.

Insight page

Michael Penix Jr.

NegativeProjection53:06

There is a really interesting dichotomy between pressured and unpressured Michael Penix: when Penix is not pressured, he was top two in EPA per dropback; when he is pressured, he is dead last. Against Chicago, the Bears pass rush isn't actually that great, and with Dio injured, it won't be great this week either, so if Penix is kept clean, the Falcons could have a lot of success offensively. However, under pressure, Penix struggles significantly—last week against Baltimore he was 2 of 9 for 3.6 yards per attempt.

Insight page

Mike Evans

PositiveRole63:38

Evans has just been a godsend for the 49ers this year, providing crucial support to their offense.

Insight page

Nico Collins

NegativeMatchup50:45

In the Houston-Jacksonville divisional matchup, even if Travis Hunter has a great day against Nico Collins, CJ Stroud spreads the ball around so much in the Texans offense and there are other weapons on the field, so Stroud can still have a good day through the air. The source notes that injecting Marvin Harrison Jr. into the team potentially makes him the new X receiver, allowing Nico to be used as a moving chess piece.

Insight page

Travis Hunter

PositiveRole27:00

The source expresses high conviction that Travis Hunter's trade value is justified despite the Jaguars giving up significant draft capital (number 5 to number 2, plus second rounder 36, 126 overall this year, and next year's first round pick). the source notes Hunter is being deployed primarily as a corner with moonlighting at wide receiver—the preferred usage—and is playing with noticeably higher confidence at corner compared to last season after adding weight and muscle. He looks more explosive despite the higher weight, is being involved in the passing game with quick-hitting opportunities for yards after catch, and the source states: 'I'm having to hold myself back from how excited I am about the future of Travis Hunter because the confidence level that he is playing with at corner right now is a leap from what it was the previous season.' the source concludes: 'The arrow is only looking very, very high up for Hunter and how they're using him.'

Insight page
PositiveRole50:32

Travis Hunter has played really, really well at corner so far this year; even if he's matched up on Nico Collins, CJ Stroud spreads the ball around so much that there are other weapons on the field where Stroud can still have a good day through the air.

Insight page

Tyler Huntley

PositiveProjection56:43

Tyler Huntley did exactly what a backup quarterback is supposed to do in the second half and overtime against Atlanta: he was 13 of 14, didn't even attempt to pass over 20 yards, and only completed two passes over 10 yards. He used every blade of grass under 10 yards, including the short middle of the field, which is exactly how a point guard style offense should be executed. The Ravens' offense remains the number one offense in the entire league in terms of success rate, and Huntley's execution supports that.

Insight page

Xavier Worthy

NegativeProjection8:15

Worthy has negative 382 receiving yards over expected since the start of 2024, the fewest in the NFL, indicating significant underperformance relative to expectations for the 2024 wide receiver class.

0:10Thursday night, last week. What's job number one? What's job number one?
0:13Yeah! Yeah! Great catch this way, man! Great catch this way, man!
0:17Welcome back, NFL Pro baby. Rhett Lewis, Trevor Sikama here with you guys to preview Week 6 in the NFL and we're getting right to it.
0:25We got some big games that we're going to preview here on this show, but we got a couple of extra topics
0:32as well, which is why we're kind of jumping into things right away.
0:36We're going to take a look at the 2024 wide receiver class and talk about, regrade, redraft, and just have a conversation
0:42about the wide receiver position that was supposed to be one of the best we've ever seen.
0:48Hmm, not so much. Why? We're going to get to your fan questions as well.
0:52Jam-packed show here, but Brett, let's start with a game preview.
0:56Let's talk about the Buffalo Bills and the Las Vegas Raiders doing battle this weekend.
1:00Bills coming off of a thrilling overtime win. Snap by Ferguson, hold by Doman, kick on the way!
1:06And it is good! And the Raiders coming off of a loss this week.
1:10A bad loss to the New England Patriots. We're not happy with what happened today and we have to go do something bad.
1:17We got to go fix it and move on.
1:20How do you see this one shaping out? Where do you want to start with the discussion in this game?
1:26I couldn't believe that that was Josh Allen's first overtime win of his career.
1:30He was 0-7 before that. Dude, you texted the group that and I was like, that can't be true.
1:36And you know, on the side, I went to our NGS people and I was like, Brett's got to be lying about this, right?
1:44And I'm like, no, we were in the numbers.
1:46It's his first overtime win, so. And it was still dicey.
1:50Like, he very easily could have gone 0-8. To me, the big difference in that game ultimately was his legs.
1:56It wasn't his arm. And this is something that we've seen throughout, you know, throughout Josh Allen's career.
2:02His ability to just break a game wide open when all else fails and there's nothing open down the field.
2:08If you lose track of him in the pocket or if you miss a single tackle of him, he can easily turn it into 10, 20, 30 yards.
2:16That's ultimately what happened with the Rams. If you're looking at season long stats so far, I know we're only five weeks in.
2:23He leads the league in scramble rushing yards at 202.
2:26Most of them came in that game as well as rushing EPA on scrambles at plus 22.7, which is absurd for only five weeks into the season.
2:35He's ranked top six in scramble rush yards in every single season since he's joined the league.
2:40He is one of the best scrambling quarterbacks ever.
2:43I would put him up there with Steve Young, Michael Vick, all these great rushing threats.
2:48He's up there with any of them. And specifically the Raiders looking forward to this game.
2:53They're going to have to deal with that in a better way than they have so far this year.
2:59They've allowed 104 scramble rush yards so far this season.
3:02That is seventh most in the NFL. 9.5 yards per carry on scrambles.
3:06Also seventh most in the NFL. And while it's only been 11 scrambles season long, Josh Allen could very easily do it
3:12five or six times in this game. Hell, he did it nine times against the Rams in five quarters.
3:18So it's something that they're going to have to do better on.
3:22And I want to show you specifically the mistakes the Rams made against Allen, which allowed him to scramble so much in
3:29the first place, as well as how some better defenses in the past have kept that in check.
3:34And Brett, this matchup against the Raiders is interesting because you talk about, okay, how do you handle quarterbacks that have that
3:41option to make plays with their legs? And a lot of times it's all right.
3:46Well, does this go into how much we feel like we can call man coverage?
3:50Because man coverage, especially if you're playing, you know, press man coverage, which we saw the Raiders do a lot of last week, your backs to the ball.
3:59And anytime you got a lot of defenders with their backs to the ball because you've got vertical routes going downfield, you're playing in man coverage.
4:07Well, then Josh Allen just goes, oh, okay, I got one guy maybe to beat and then I'm getting, you know, 10,
4:1415 yards or maybe even more than that. That's when it's advantageous for those really athletic quarterbacks.
4:19And so we talked in the reaction show earlier this week about how the Raiders game plan, unfortunately, was kind of perfect
4:26for Drake May to take advantage of it. And I kind of think that they have to pivot against Josh Allen because
4:32Josh Allen presents a lot of the same issues for them.
4:36So I'm very interested to see how the Raiders are going to change up their defense this week as opposed to last
4:43week because Drake May killed him in that area.
4:45But I do kind of want to touch on Ashen Jenty because he is absolutely just not as efficient or explosive as he was last year.
4:53Now, he did suffer the ankle sprain earlier this year in training camp and Kubiak after the game was kind of saying, yeah, he's gutting it out.
5:02He didn't straight up say like, yeah, he's still playing super hurt, but he was saying that he was gutting it out.
5:08He was toughing it out to be out there.
5:11But I have kind of noticed, you see the missed tackle rate number is almost down a full 10% for him this year.
5:18The yards per carry average is also down for him.
5:21It's not all of his fault. There's some offensive line issues as well.
5:25The yards before contact average are also down. So I went back and I looked at last game against the Patriots and
5:32I did find some hints to say maybe he is a little bit more hurt than we thought.
5:38So taking that into account, right? Jenty isn't entirely the Boise State version of Jenty that we know and love or even
5:44last year's version of Jenty that was really just fighting through everything at the same time because their offensive line was so bad.
5:51It felt like Ashen Jenty versus the world, which it kind of was.
5:55If he's not 100%, it certainly does seem like this whole offense is just Brock, save us.
6:01And it's worked. It's caught! Remarkable! Bowers has the touchdown!
6:04Like that has worked. He's the only player to rank in the top five in yards per route run from the slot
6:11and out wide, which he's not really a tight end if we're looking at how a traditional tight end is used.
6:17Like he's basically a receiver, but he is arguably the most effective receiver in the league so far this year.
6:233.2 yards per route run from the slot, which is fifth.
6:273.9 yards per route run out wide. That's four.
6:29That's basically JSN numbers, right? He's just been absolutely absurd.
6:32And he has been able to carry the load for this Raiders passing game so far.
6:37The thing that I'm wondering is, okay, if the Bills just dedicate a bracket to him, and if we're not as worried
6:44about Jenty as maybe we would have been in years past just because he's clearly not moving the same as of right
6:51now, what are the other options the Raiders have to keep pace with Josh Allen?
6:55Because we know they're going to have to keep pace with Josh Allen.
6:59Do they have any other club in the bag?
7:02That's what worries me the most about this team.
7:057.0, f*** that. Great job, man. Great f***ing job.
7:08You mentioning Brock Bowers sort of as a tight end by position on the depth chart only, that kind of brought up
7:15an interesting conversation when we were talking about what we wanted to get into on the show, and that is his draft
7:21class, that 2024 draft class, which we were told and we scouted and we were super excited about.
7:27We thought that this might be one of the best wide receiver draft classes we've seen in the last decade.
7:33And it hasn't exactly panned out that way. And Bowers, who's played 41.6% of his snaps from the slot, 39% of his
7:40snaps out wide as a wide receiver, and just 16.9% of his snaps aligned as a true tight end, he really might get paid like a wide receiver.
7:48And Brett, when you look at this wide receiver class, he might get paid the most out of all of those wide receivers.
7:55Marvin Harrison Jr. was in the news for the wrong reasons because the team that drafted him gave up on him already and traded him.
8:03Malik Nabors has had the injury. Roma Dunze has been disappointing for what we thought of him pre-draft and where he was drafted.
8:10And then you just go down the list. That 2024 wide receiver class, again, we thought was going to be phenomenal.
8:17And yet, it's been disappointing. I think that I have to use that word here with this class.
8:22Hell, I think I will actually go down the list.
8:25And this is in no particular order. These are just all the highly drafted receivers from that class.
8:31Xavier Worthy has negative 382 receiving yards over expected since the start of 2024.
8:35Fewest in the NFL. Roma Dunze has the second fewest, negative 315.
8:39So, that's not good company to keep. Aidy Mitchell has the third fewest at negative 277.
8:44He also has the fourth fewest receiving EPA at negative 24.6.
8:47Jalen Polk has the sixth fewest receiving EPA. Not in the league anymore, by the way.
8:52Marvin Harrison Jr., already been traded. He's only the third top five pick to be traded within his first three years with
8:59his team in the last 17 years. So, that's a very rare thing to happen.
9:04And then specifically with Leggett, Polk, Aidy Mitchell, Dunze, and Pearsall, their teams, if you're looking at on-off splits, get more EPA
9:10per play with them off the field than on so far.
9:14So, it just hasn't really worked out. I mean, Malik's been great when he's been healthy, but there was that major injury.
9:20McConkie, again, he's been great when he's been healthy, but it feels like he's just perpetually banged up.
9:26So, it's just, that draft class to me is the billboard for why receiver is not exactly a slam dunk to take in the first round.
9:34Historically speaking, first round receivers, like their bust rate is very high compared to, say, an interior offensive lineman or even a running back.
9:41Like, it's higher hit rates for those position groups than receiver.
9:45And yet, teams still feel like they're kind of forced into taking them early because you typically have to have three receivers on the field.
9:52And if one gets injured, your fourth guy has to be good too.
9:56And if two get injured, your fifth guy has to be good.
10:00So, it's a position that you need a lot of quality at.
10:04And if you're looking at cap percentages and how the market has grown, the receiver market has exploded so much that you
10:11feel like you have to get these rookie deals with five years of contract control in the first round just to be
10:17able to make your team or even just your offense affordable.
10:21And I found this tweet from Dan Griffiths where if you look at the top 10 highest paid guys at the position,
10:28the growth of that top 10 average for wide receiver is second only to quarterbacks.
10:32So, this position is not only getting paid more, it's growing more at a higher rate than any other position.
10:38We're talking offensive tackles, edge rushers, these guys that you think just get crazy money.
10:43So, are wide receivers now. So, now, like you just said, not only are you having to pay maybe your wide receiver
10:50one if he's one of the best in the NFL, truly top money outside of the quarterback position, you also have to fill these other positions.
10:58You also want good wide receivers at these other positions.
11:01And so, it is fascinating how we get a draft like 2024 that was as disappointing as it could have been relative to expectations.
11:08And yet, teams are still going to draft wide receiver.
11:11Because I think for the longest time, we've always just thought of wide receiver as a true talent need and want in the draft.
11:19You want to have better pass catchers. You want to help out your quarterback.
11:23You want to score more points. But it is much more of a cap strategy selection as well than I think it's given credit for.
11:31So, even with some of these disappointing selections, I don't think we're going to see teams slow down on wanting to get these top wide receivers anytime soon.
11:39A while back, I actually did pull a bunch of data for what like the highest paid receiving tandems ever were going
11:46back about 20 years in terms of their individual cap percentages.
11:49I was looking at like Reggie, ironically, Marvin Harrison Sr.
11:52You know, you're looking at that Anquan Bolden-Larry Fitzgerald combo.
11:56You know, all of these great receiving tandems where two guys are getting 1,000 yards.
12:00Basically, none of them were paid a total percentage combined anywhere near what Jamar and T.
12:05Higgins are getting. Or even what like Tyreek and Waddle were getting in Miami.
12:09This is a very new phenomenon across the NFL.
12:12I'm not entirely sure if it works, right? Investing that much in receiver.
12:16Like, we'll see what the Cowboys do with George Pickens.
12:19They could be another team that does it pretty soon here.
12:23So, I'm not entirely sure if it works. But I do know that teams feel like they have to do it.
12:29Which, in itself, is an indicator of where front offices are going these days.
12:33They are prioritizing receiver. They're drafting them. If they don't work, they're paying guys to come in in other ways.
12:40Like, they're throwing so much capital, money-wise and picks-wise, into this position group.
12:44It's kind of hard to ignore. Mike Evans is an unstoppable machine!
12:47When you look at the wide receiver position, total cap percentages here.
12:51Okay? In 2024, it was 8.9%. And wide receivers gained 44% of the total yards for offenses.
12:56In 2025, it was 8.7%. So, right around the same, a little bit less.
13:00And total yards was 43%. But then in 2026, now it's all the way up to 9.4%.
13:06And the percentage of total yards, it's more of a passing league right now.
13:10And so, we're looking at 45%. So, the percentages of total yards that the wide receiver position helps you gain has been relatively the same.
13:18And yet, you're paying more for it. And I think that it is going in that direction.
13:23Which, we bring it all back to Brock Bowers, how he sort of started this transition into this topic.
13:29You look at Bowers in that 2024 draft class.
13:32He's going to have the highest contract. Especially for exactly where it's going.
13:36And especially if he's able to stack on the fact that he goes, yeah, I'm better at wide receiver than all of these other guys.
13:43And also, I happen to be listed as a tight end.
13:47And I think that Brock Bowers is going to have a strong case given where the cap is going and how he
13:53is utilized to have a pretty strong second contract there for him.
13:57I mean, this team paid $27 million a year for a center.
14:01What do you think they're going to give Brock Bowers?
14:04All right, a little break of the action for a fun segment here.
14:08We're going to bring back Blind Resume. I'm going to have some categories of a single team and then a multiple choice question for Brett to answer.
14:16And he's going to have one for me as well.
14:19Brett, your Blind Resume team here. They are fourth in total EPA.
14:23Fifth in success rate. And first in rush yards over expected.
14:26Is it the Baltimore Ravens, the Kansas City Chiefs, or the Atlanta Falcons?
14:30Oh, man. That's bait. That's 100% bait. Oh, Callie's trying to screw with me.
14:35So the rushing yards over expected, right? That's the thing that's really screwing with me here.
14:40Because Kenneth Walker gets a lot of rushing yards over expected because he's breaking tackles.
14:44And same with Bijan. Football's back. Hey, it's Drew Franklin from NFL Cover Zero.
14:49Enjoy the NFL season while listening to NFL Cover Zero.
14:52We have storylines, predictions, and lots of silliness. Here's what you can expect from the podcast in our second season.
14:58When you meet people and you say your job's a sports announcer, it's always interesting to see what the first thing they say is.
15:05I did have one of the more difficult questions, though.
15:08He sits next to me and he sees I'm on my computer and he goes, big sports fan.
15:14And I was like, yeah, actually. And he goes, what do you think about my Jaguars this year?
15:19I realized, like, no one's ever asked me that question ever about anything.
15:23And I was like, Duval. Listen to NFL Cover Zero on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
15:30I'll go Kansas City. That seems more correct, which means I'm probably wrong.
15:34Final answer? Final answer. It is, in fact, the Kansas City Chiefs.
15:38Finally! Oh my God! You nailed it! Good job!
15:41Good job, my friend. That was close. You're right.
15:43The rushing yards over expected. It could have been either of those teams.
15:47But the giveaway should have been the fact that Atlanta doesn't have that consistent of an offense to be fourth in total
15:54EPA, fifth in total success rate overall. The Bichon factor has definitely been there for them.
15:59But I don't think that they have that level of consistency to them.
16:03But it could be wrong there as well. Yeah, Cooper Rush, I think, immediately disqualifies you from any high-ranking.
16:09That's kind of what I was thinking. Yeah. Yeah.
16:12All right. Your blind resume. This team is sixth in offensive success rate, fourth in third down conversions, first in scoring drive rate.
16:19So the most efficient scoring offense. Scoring drive rate.
16:21What are the three teams? Who do I have to guess?
16:25Oh, yeah. I probably should have given you that.
16:2849ers. 49ers. Cowboys. Rams. Before you gave me the teams, I was immediately thinking about the 49ers.
16:33Okay. That's where my mind would have gone as well.
16:36Yeah. Cowboys have scored a lot. We talked about this stat like two weeks ago for them.
16:41And then what was the last team? It was the Rams.
16:45It was the Cowboys and Niners. Rams. Rams. I don't think it's the Rams.
16:49They've missed too many field goals. They've had too many turnovers.
16:52I don't think it's the Rams. While you think about it, by the way, for those of you that are at home,
16:59go look at the play-by-play of the Monday night game.
17:02Bills-Rams. Because a whole lot didn't happen for a lot of that game.
17:06Because there were so many penalties. There was like 24 penalties.
17:09You get to the end of the third quarter, and it's Bills touchdown, Rams touchdown, Bills touchdown, Rams touchdown, Bills touchdown, Rams touchdown.
17:17They're just massively inflating their scoring drive rates from about a 17-minute period of game clock.
17:21Are you not entertained? It's punishing anybody who wants to leave the games early.
17:26That's what that is. I'm going to go with the Dallas Cowboys.
17:29I'm going to guess the Dallas Cowboys. We are two for two.
17:33Let's go, baby. Got her. You love to see that kind of top-tier ball knowledge.
17:38All right, next game on the docket, Cowboys-Packers. This one's fascinating to me because they just brought in Mike Pettin this week,
17:45and they made it known that they brought in Mike Pettin.
17:48This was not an under-the-radar hiring. This was, we are bringing in Mike to help fix us.
17:53Not that I think Christian Parker is getting replaced.
17:56I don't think Mike Pettin is taking over or anything like that.
18:00But they clearly identified that they needed help. They needed to bring in an expert that could help this defense not be
18:06the worst in the league, to put it diplomatically speaking.
18:09Now, who is Mike Pettin? He is a Rex Ryan disciple.
18:13Going back to the mid-2000s Ravens days. If you're looking at that ultra-aggressive defense with, like, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Haloti Nada, like, all of these guys.
18:21Mike Pettin was there with him. He was the defensive coordinator under Rex in New York back in, like, the prime Revis era.
18:28Very, very aggressive defensive play caller. Known for putting a lot of bodies in the line of scrimmage.
18:34He and I think Mike Zimmer were probably the two guys that were most known for mug looks.
18:39Putting linebackers up in the line of scrimmage, in the A gap, in the B gap, and trying to make offenses really operate on their back foot.
18:48That's what he's most known for. Stroud can't find anyone.
18:51And he is forced out of bounds by Rashad Gary.
18:54It kind of feels like the Cowboys want to do that more.
18:58Because the more Fangio-ish style, which I wouldn't say is passive.
19:01I would say when you have the talent to do that style, it's very boa constrictory.
19:06Whereas Pettin is more like a cobra. Like, he's going to strike you and kill you quickly.
19:11I think anything compared to, like, what Pettin, who was on the Viking staff over the last couple years, does with Flores.
19:18I think anything compared to that would be passive.
19:21So you're not, I don't think you're ruffling any feathers saying that.
19:24But it certainly feels like they recognize the more conservative boa constrictor style is not going well.
19:30So they want to switch things up. Right. And Pettin's background, and I think that everything that he could potentially bring to
19:36the table here for the Cowboys, does make this matchup against the Packers very interesting.
19:41So Pettin was actually defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers from 2018 to 2020.
19:46Now Jordan Love got drafted in 2020, so Love was there in Pettin's final season.
19:50But as you guys know, Love didn't start until 2023 because Aaron Rodgers was still there.
19:55So yeah, I mean, like, he was around him and everything.
19:58But I don't really think the impact was that big of a takeaway going all the way back to when they were sort of in the same building.
20:07Instead, what I think is a little bit more valuable here is that Pettin was an assistant head coach slash became also
20:14the outside linebackers coach for the Minnesota Vikings. It was from 2022 to 2025, but specifically this matters if we take it
20:21from 2023 to 2025 because those are the years when Jordan Love became the starter for the Green Bay Packers.
20:27So we do have a handful of games that, yes, it's Flores' defense, but Mike Pettin is still there.
20:33I think the influence is the same. He was a position coach.
20:36He was probably consulted on a lot of this stuff.
20:39And I think that his ultra-aggressive style, like you mentioned, is very in line with what Flores has wanted to do and has done with the Minnesota Vikings.
20:48Love versus Flores. Since 2023, 7.2 yards per attempt, 60.6 completion percentage, negative 3.9 completion percentage over expected, and a negative EPA per drop back.
20:56Love versus everyone else since 2023, 7.6 yards per attempt, 64.6 completion percentage, a positive completion percentage over expected, and a positive EPA per drop back.
21:04So Brian Flores has been one of the best defense coordinators in the league over the last couple of years.
21:10That is true against Jordan Love. Specifically, though, Vikings in double-mugged looks from 2023 to 2025, that sample size, they had double-mugged looks.
21:17So linebackers walked up to the line scrimmage on 12.7% of their plays, almost double more than any other team.
21:23And then specifically on third down in that time frame, 25.4% of their plays have had a double-mugged look on third down.
21:30That is, once again, first in the NFL. They did that more against the Packers and Jordan Love than all the others,
21:3728.8% versus the Packers versus 24.9% against all other teams.
21:40Now, to me, the transition here is you look at what Jordan Love did really well last week.
21:45He was throwing the ball deep. Okay, well, how does this all factor into limiting what Jordan Love can do as a deep ball passer?
21:53Against the Vikings, when it comes to attacking deep, Love versus Flores, 13.6% deep rate percentage, but a 33.3% success rate.
21:59Love versus everyone else, 13.1% deep rate. So basically the same.
22:03He's just trying to do this every game, but a 38.6% success rate.
22:07So a little bit less of a completion percentage and success rate overall for Love versus Flores attacking deep versus all the other coordinators.
22:14Love was great on the blitz last week, 9 for 12, 176 yards and a touchdown.
22:19But again, when you look at the Vikings specifically, when Mike Pettin was there, Love had a game where he threw three interceptions in 2024 against the Viking.
22:28Two of those interceptions were, guess what? Double mugged looks.
22:31And another throw that was incomplete that could have been intercepted came from a double mugged pressure as well.
22:37Jordan Love has only thrown three interceptions in a single game twice in his career.
22:41One of them, you guessed it, versus the Vikings when Mike Pettin was there.
22:46That's a lot of information. A lot of things to throw at you guys to basically just say the Cowboys want to be more aggressive.
22:53I think if anything, because you're not going to change the system overnight.
22:57I think if anything, Pettin was brought in this week to be an expert on how to attack Matt LaFleur's protections.
23:04Because he knows this protection scheme very well. He knows everything the Packers like to do.
23:09He's very well attuned to how they like to keep Jordan Love clean.
23:13And they're doing it with a, on paper, much worse offensive line this year than they have in years past.
23:19So if anybody can kind of be that last second ringer that comes in and does an install of like, Hey, here's
23:26what Jordan Love likes on third and insert distance in certain areas of the field.
23:30Here's how we can attack it, right? Here's who their weak link is.
23:34What's the best way to isolate that weak link?
23:37Whether it's a running back, a tight end, a backup guard, whatever.
23:41Pettin is very good at just finding the thing that you do the worst and pressing that button over and over again.
23:47I feel like that's what he's going to do for Dallas.
23:51All right, next game on the docket, Texans-Jags. Duval County's been very upset with us.
23:55We haven't talked about the Jags nearly enough this season.
23:59It's kind of early for the whole must-win game thing.
24:02But this certainly feels like a must-win game. It does for the Texans specifically because you beat the Titans last week.
24:08You go to one and four. But you are in a situation where if you look at the next-gen stats, playoff probability that we have.
24:16If they win this game against Jacksonville, they have a 34% chance to make the playoffs.
24:21Right now it's at 23%. So if you beat the Jags, that jumps up 11%.
24:25Now, obviously, this could change a little bit depending on what happens around the league.
24:30But that's what we have right now. If they lose this game, it goes all the way down to 14%.
24:36And this game matters a lot, not just in the win-loss column, but also the fact that if the Texans lose this game, they drop to 1-5.
24:44And Jacksonville is then at the top of the division at 5-1.
24:48If you're the Texans, you can kiss winning this division goodbye.
24:51Like, you are just praying, praying for a wild card at that point.
24:55Now, their next four games, they do have the Giants, the Chargers, the Browns, and the Colts.
25:01I think all those games are winnable for them.
25:03But given that they have dug themselves such a hole, you've got to win some games that maybe on paper at the time you aren't expected to win.
25:12And I think that it's tough to look at what I think is a top three team in the NFL.
25:18And I would argue the number one team in the NFL right now and say, there it is.
25:24We'd like to get that win on the schedule.
25:27But you're kind of in this situation for a reason.
25:30Talked plenty about the Texans, right? We've talked about how their offensive line has still been up and down.
25:35Their run game, especially in the short yardage, has not been what it's needed to be.
25:40The pass rush, especially with Will Anderson, has been fantastic for them.
25:44And that's interesting going up against the Jags, who are now starting Walker Little.
25:48But, you know, Walker Little has still started 39 games in his career.
25:52So it's not like the guy was... Yeah, he's never started before.
25:56Isn't Anton Harrison? No, but I think that it's not like ultimate panic button.
26:00The defense hasn't been what you've wanted it to be, but you figured that's going to bounce back.
26:06But bounce back, how much? Can you rattle a Jags team that has been, for the most part, fantastic this season in
26:13so many different areas of the game? They've been very balanced.
26:16They play extremely complimentary football for offense, defense, run game, pass game, special teams involved as well.
26:21It's why I would argue they're the best team in the NFL.
26:25And it's tough to have the Texans staring down the barrel of this and saying that this is a must-win game.
26:31But unfortunately, Brett, I do think this is a must-win game for them.
26:35Here's pressure. And here's Will Anderson Jr. with the sack.
26:39On the Jags side of things, maybe while we haven't talked about the Jags as much as Jags fans want us to,
26:45there are several things that we praise them for so far this season.
26:49Game management hasn't necessarily been one of them. Liam Cohen, back-to-back weeks.
26:53Questionable at best game management. And specifically play calling in key downs and distances.
26:57But everything else about this team, we have really liked.
27:00Trevor, specifically, has been on a tear so far this year.
27:04He's been exceptional over the middle of the field.
27:07He and Stroud both are in the top five quarterbacks as far as middle of the field target rate.
27:12And their offenses have both been awesome because of that.
27:15If you're looking at Basial Tootin, he's flashed. If you're looking at the pass rush, they've been consistently good this year.
27:22There's so many things about this Jags team individually that we have liked.
27:26And yet, somehow, we haven't talked about Travis Hunter basically at all this season.
27:30Is the trade still worth it if he doesn't play receiver at all?
27:34Like, if this is what he is, if they get a top three corner in the league, is that still worth the trade?
27:41Rich, a blockbuster trade. The Jacksonville Jaguars wanted to be bold, and they are in fact bold.
27:47They have agreed to terms with the Browns to trade from number five to number two with the Browns receiving a second
27:53rounder, number 36 overall, 126 overall this year, and next year's first round pick.
27:58If you're looking at it for just pick value, it's hard to say that that would be.
28:03However, I think that when you're evaluating trades, you have to have the context of who you're trading for and just everything that surrounds that team.
28:11And for Travis Hunter specifically, I loved the move on draft day.
28:15I love that they got aggressive. I love that they went and got the unicorn player in this class.
28:20The reason why I loved it is not because I just thought that he could be a good corner, which by the
28:27way, I thought that he should be primarily a corner and then Moonlight as a wide receiver, not the other way around.
28:34So I love the way that they're deploying him so far.
28:37If he does not play wide receiver at all, it's hard to say that they would take it back because of the
28:44team building that they have done around everything since because the Jags have obviously become one of the best teams in the NFL.
28:51And so you can kind of look at it and say like, all right, did we pay maybe a little bit more
28:58than you would think for a shutdown corner? Sure, but it made our team better.
29:03And I think that's part of the conversation as well.
29:06But I'm going to cheat a little bit here in my answer because they are playing him a little bit at wide receiver.
29:13And not only does he look confident at corner, he looks confident at wide receiver in those opportunities where they're trying to
29:20give him the ball quick and get those yards after catch.
29:23So last year when I saw the usage from him, and obviously the injury didn't help, I was like, man, did they
29:30pay too much for how they wanted to use him?
29:33This year, I'm having to hold myself back from how excited I am about the future of Travis Hunter because the confidence
29:40level that he is playing with at corner right now is a leap from what it was the previous season.
29:46I know he put on some good weight, put on some good muscle.
29:50He looks even more explosive despite being at a higher weight.
29:53They're getting him involved in the passing game despite the fact that they don't have to because they have tight ends that they like.
30:00They have Parker Washington. They have Jacoby Myers. And so I'll say that when you look at things just in a vacuum,
30:07that's a lot of draft capital value to give up for even just one of the best corners.
30:13It's a lot to give up for just a corner.
30:16But when you bring in full context of who it was and that it was Travis Hunter and that he can always
30:23have that potential to play on the other side of the ball, certainly for where we are right now and how he
30:29looks, yeah, I'd tell you that the trade was worth it.
30:33The arrow is only looking very, very high up for Hunter and how they're using him.
30:38Travis Hunter, his first career interception, and boy, did he pick a perfect moment for it.
30:43One last stat here for you. So the Jacksonville Jaguars have not allowed a single opposing player to run for 40 plus
30:49yards in a game against them so far this year.
30:52You might think that's a death sentence for the Texans, but joke's on you.
30:57The leading Texans rusher averages 30 yards a game.
31:00You can't kill us, Trevor. We're already dead. On the ground, gets crushed.
31:04Speaking of bad Texans run games, by the way, last season to start the 2025 season, the Rams won essentially because of
31:10a Nate Landman punch out on Daria Ogumbawale. And Landman has kind of become known for this.
31:16He is a master of the peanut punch. But he's not the only one.
31:20There's a lot of players around the league that have gotten really, really good at forcing fumbles to the point where it
31:27is a noticeable uptick in terms of how many fumbles there are league-wide.
31:31I don't want to say it's that ball security is at its worst.
31:35I just think defenders have gotten a lot better at doing these hyper-targeted punches.
31:3952 fumbles, most since week one of 2022 when there was 56, and 26 fumbles lost the most since week 12 of 2020 when there was 28.
31:47That is crazy. And you're right. I think that every single time that we see it on a broadcast, everybody's always like, The peanut punch.
31:55Man, it really does feel that way. It's not like this cliche.
31:59It's taught now. This is clearly a technique thing.
32:01And we've seen, I mean, the Mark Andrews fumble is a great example where he's coming in to make the tackle.
32:08You could tell he's not abandoning his form. Now, sometimes the guys come in and they do totally abandon their form, and
32:15they're just trying to punch the ball out. But that was an example of what you're talking about where I think that
32:21it's being taught more as an emphasis now of, Hey, when you come in to wrap up for a tackle, make sure
32:28that you are getting to the hip and the center of gravity of the player where you can bring them down.
32:35But as you are and as you are wrapping, get the fist around.
32:39Try to knock the ball out. And so it's like, yes, we want you to be fundamentally sound.
32:44We want you to make the tackle. But they're clearly teaching this in how they are wrapping up ball carriers as well.
32:51I think you're also seeing a ton of, Hey, my teammates already kind of starting to bring this player down.
32:57I'm just going to go for the ball here.
33:00So I just, it's a huge emphasis. And I think the reason why is because in an age where offenses, it feels
33:07like can get explosives all over the place. Because when you get those extra possessions, they can mean everything.
33:12And that's why coaches preach against forcing turnovers and limiting turnovers, depending on which side of the ball that you're on.
33:19But it very clearly teams are more into this than they've ever been, because this is a league trend that is only
33:26going up with defenses forcing these fumbles. Yeah. I mean, Fred Warner has three so far this year.
33:31He's only played in five games, right? Three force fumbles in five games is nuts.
33:36And there was actually a moment in the Australia game where I think he was looking at Drake Greenlaw and talking to
33:43him and he said, Hey, hold him up. I can get one for us here.
33:47Like don't immediately bring him down, hold him up.
33:50And he did. And then Fred came in and punched out.
33:53Like he called his own shot. And so defenders are really approaching force fumbles as a team effort, right?
33:59Like keep him up so that we have an opportunity to come in here and punch it out.
34:05And it has such a profound impact on the opposing defense, right?
34:08If you're looking at the Chargers defense as an example, their EPA per play isn't horrible.
34:13Like their down-to-down efficiency isn't horrible, but they've allowed, I guess, technically a whole lot of points this year because they have
34:2019 drives that have started in their own territory because of the Chargers offense turning it over.
34:25A lot of those being fumbles. Yeah. Right? Like they lost a couple weeks ago because of that because Omari and Hampton had it punched out late.
34:34So it really helps your offense be better if you can give them that kind of field position by just punching it out.
34:41And because it's not a round ball, it can bounce all over the place and you guys have a shot to recover it.
34:48If you can do that once or twice in a game, you recover one of them.
34:53You set yourself up for an easy, easy score.
34:56That flips the entire game. It really does. It makes any game winnable by pretty much any team if you can win that turnover battle.
35:03It's not a new thing, but it certainly feels like teams are doing it a lot more now.
35:09Back to the ground. Back to Cook. And this time, ball comes out!
35:13His second fumble of the night! Landman forced it and it's another fumble for James Cook.
35:18All right, last segment of the show. We got to get the people involved, Brett.
35:22Going to the fan Q&A section here. First question from Ward MVP Season.
35:26What's going on with the Vikings offense? Is it on Kyler?
35:30Is it KOC? So, yeah. Vikings sitting here at 5-0.
35:33I already complained about being 5-0. But, hey, I think that people do look at the offense and go, man, this feels unstable.
35:40It just doesn't feel as easy. And if Brian Flores wasn't on level 15 out of 10, maybe the record does look different for the Vikings.
35:48So, your thoughts on the Vikings offense right now?
35:51I mean, the easy answer is it's just not an explosive offense.
35:54They have an 11.1% explosive play rate on offense.
35:57That's passing and running. That's bottom 10 in the NFL.
36:00Just rushing in terms of explosive designed run rate.
36:03Only 7.1%. That's ninth lowest in the NFL. Even though their average yards before contact per attempt is actually pretty good.
36:09Tenth most at 1.5. So, the offensive line has done a good job in terms of creating room for the running backs.
36:16The running backs just aren't really doing anything with that room.
36:20They're specifically a fairly average deep pass rate at 9.9%.
36:23But, a lot of explosives in today's NFL are created over the middle of the field.
36:28I know we're going to keep talking about it and beating that dead horse.
36:32But, it's true. And, if you're looking at intermediate in-breakers, he only targets them 10% of the time.
36:37That's the lowest rate in the entire league. And, that's just where all of these really explosive offenses get these chunks.
36:44Yeah. You throw an in-breaker and then you get a catch and run.
36:48Or, you're just making life hell for these hook droppers.
36:51And, you're getting 15, 20 yards at a time.
36:54They just don't do that. So, if you don't have an explosive run game outside of, you know, the odd Kyler scramble here and there.
37:01And, you don't have an explosive passing game because the only real time you're going down the field, it's like a one-on-one down the boundary.
37:09Which is a low percentage throw to begin with.
37:12Then, you kind of have to play offense the hard way and put together 10, 11 play drives.
37:17They're just not really good enough to do that without stalling out.
37:21Now, it's a big reason why Will Riker, you know, kind of tongue-in-cheek, but really was getting, like, Vikings MVP chance.
37:28Because, they keep getting to the red zone or just outside the red zone and stalling out.
37:33And, then he has to come in and bang a field goal through.
37:37I think he got, like, five in one game the other week.
37:41So, it's just not a sustainable offense, you know, where you don't have explosives to get those chunks for you.
37:47So, it's so much harder to put five good plays on tape in a row compared to just one to get the same amount of yardage.
37:55I would agree with you. I think that the lack of explosiveness in the run game is really affecting what they can do overall.
38:02Because, as much as, yes, you don't have to be a successful run team to be effective at play action or motion and things like that.
38:10You could still do those things even if you don't have a great run game.
38:15It certainly helps when you do. And, you just get more bite from linebackers.
38:19You get more attention from safeties. The middle of the field opens up more.
38:23You know, whether it's a bootleg or just a straight drop play action.
38:27Whatever it is, that middle of the field opens up a lot more.
38:31And, those aim-breaking routes open up, I think, a lot more when you do have a successful run game.
38:37And, of course, you know, we've said this before.
38:40Kyler's not the tallest quarterback in the league. And, so, you kind of have to manipulate the offensive line a little bit
38:47at times in order for him to want to attack over the middle of the field with regularity.
38:52And, so, I think the domino effect really just starts with they don't have that explosiveness in the run game.
38:58And, if they had that a little bit more, I think that things would look a little bit easier for them.
39:05And, to me, that's what's quote-unquote wrong with the Vikings offense.
39:08I don't know how much more explosive they're going to get in the ground game.
39:13But, again, you know, if the defense is playing the way that they are, I think even the offense in its current
39:20form, especially from what we saw last week, which was a really nice game from Kyler, is going to be enough for
39:26this team to make the postseason and feel pretty good about themselves when they get there.
39:31Second question that we have here for the fan Q&A, it's from NFLduos on Twitter.
39:36It said, is a healthy Panthers offense top five in the NFL?
39:40So, we could just look at sort of what they are as an offense while playing through some of these injuries.
39:46EPA per play, they have the eighth most EPA per play in the NFL.
39:50EPA per dropbacks, the fifth most. So, there we go, cracking the top five.
39:55Designed run EPA, 19th most. So, have struggled on the ground.
39:58But, scoring drive percentage, they have the fifth highest in the NFL.
40:02So, in terms of the overall question, is a healthy Panthers offense top five in the NFL?
40:07Well, they're the fifth highest in scoring percentage, even with what they have been through.
40:12So, does that make the answer yes, Brett? What do you think about that?
40:16Football's back. Hey, it's Drew Franklin from NFL Cover Zero.
40:19Enjoy the NFL season while listening to NFL Cover Zero.
40:22We have storylines, predictions, and lots of silliness. Here's what you can expect from the podcast in our second season.
40:28When you meet people and you say your job's a sports announcer, it's always interesting to see what the first thing they say is.
40:36I did have one of the more difficult questions, though.
40:39He sits next to me, and he sees I'm on my computer, and he goes, big sports fan.
40:44And I was like, yeah, actually. And he goes, what do you think about my Jaguars this year?
40:50I realized, like, no one's ever asked me that question ever about anything.
40:54And I was like, do you know what I'm saying?
40:57Listen to NFL Cover Zero on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
41:02I mean, look no further than explosive play rate.
41:05Just talked about it with Minnesota. They don't get a lot of explosives.
41:09Carolina has the fourth highest explosive play rate in the NFL, 15.7%.
41:13It's a huge, huge jump. And they get it both on the ground and through the air.
41:18It's a balanced offense, even though they're not fully healthy.
41:21I think McMillan playing more in the slot has been awesome for them because it lets him find space so much easier
41:28when he has these two-way goes from the slot.
41:30And that really, to me, was his superpower when he was coming out of college, was just being a really smart receiver,
41:37very silky smooth, find space, get yards after catch.
41:40I know he was profiled as this, like, you know, Mike Evans 2.0.
41:44And while, yeah, he's big, to me, he was really more like an Eric Decker type than he was.
41:50And I mean that as a compliment, by the way.
41:53Prime Eric Decker was sick. But that, to me, was his best usage of, like, as a big slot.
41:59Well, they started doing that this year, got great returns out of it a couple weeks ago before their bye week.
42:05Ideally, they're healthier now coming off that bye going into week six.
42:09This is as potent an offense I can remember in Carolina since, God, do I want to invoke 2015 here?
42:15Like, is this the best Panthers offense since then?
42:18I think it might be. Yeah, it kind of feels like it.
42:22So, let's put each other on the spot then, okay?
42:25I'm going to name a team, and you tell me if you would have that offense above Carolina, if you would pick that offense over the Carolina Panthers.
42:33Buffalo Bills. They have the most points per game so far this year, 32.8.
42:38I'll say yes. The fumbles concern me, but I'll say yes.
42:41What about the Niners? Even in their banged up state, I would say yes, but boy, it's close.
42:46It's really close. I agree. Lions. Yeah, because somehow they're just good at everything, even with their own personnel issues.
42:53Even by recent history, Lions standards. They're amazing. So, sure.
42:56Yeah. I agree. I agree. So, we're at three now.
42:59This is now where I certainly think that Carolina's in the conversation.
43:02Would you take Carolina or would you take Kansas City?
43:06Oh. That's close. I think I would take... It's very close.
43:09I think I would take Carolina. I feel like they're a little bit more versatile, right?
43:14It does feel like Kansas City is kind of the Kenneth Walker show.
43:18Yes. Yeah. And also, they're banged up and are still that good.
43:22So, give me Carolina. But that is close. I think that that one's close, but I think you could put Carolina in there above the Chiefs.
43:30What about the Cowboys? You should take the Cowboys or the Panthers?
43:33Hmm. Boy. I think the Cowboys at their best, I would take over the Panthers, but the problem is they were five
43:40weeks into the season, and how many times have they played their best?
43:44Not enough. Carolina's been more consistent. Carolina's been more consistent.
43:47Yeah. Give me that. Give me the higher baseline compared to the higher ceiling.
43:51Okay. All right. And then... I'll just go Bengals.
43:54Would you go Bengals over the Panthers, or would you take the Panthers over the Bengals?
43:59I would go Panthers over Bengals. The one that I would be interested in, your answer on this, Chicago.
44:05Yeah. When they're healthy. Yeah. There were three other teams I was going to bring up.
44:10The Seahawks, the Ravens, and then the Bears. When the Bears are healthy, I'd take the Bears over the Panthers.
44:16Like, I think that they're... I think that they are absolutely in that top five category.
44:21I would say the Bills, the Lions, the 49ers, and the Bears.
44:25I would all take over the Panthers. But then I would have Carolina in that next tier, and you could have an
44:31argument for them being at five or just below five with the Chiefs, the Ravens, the Cowboys, and the Seahawks.
44:38I think those are the teams that are in that next tier.
44:41And what's interesting is, Declan Doyle is so good at his job that whether Lamar is out there or not, the Ravens
44:48have the highest success rate out of any offense.
44:51Yeah. It's wild, dude. It's hard to deny that, too.
44:54But all of that, I think, whether you have the Panthers right there at five or within the top five, I think
45:01the question and the conversation is a good one to have to respect what Carolina is putting out there.
45:06This isn't just kind of a fun story. This has been an awesome offense to watch and one of the best in the NFL.
45:14So, McMillan, touchdown! Tantaroa McMillan! Game picks for week six.
45:17Let's go, baby. If you're new around here, what we do is we take 10 games we have in the upcoming NFL
45:24slate, and not only do we pick the winner, but we also rank them in terms of confidence.
45:29So, if you think that this team is absolutely going to win this game, you'll put it at the 10 confidence spot.
45:36And if you're right, you get 10 points. Then 9, you get 9 points.
45:408, you get 8 points. So on and so forth.
45:43It's a fun game. We keep track all season long, along with you guys out there, which we'll get to some of
45:50the shout outs for how you guys did last week.
45:53Brett, really quickly, I don't want to reveal our points yet because we'll do that in a second before we tee up these games.
46:01But we implemented a you lose 10 points if your 10 confidence game does not hit.
46:06And we implemented that, I will add, because you missed it two weeks in a row before this.
46:11And the people were like, Brett's got to pay.
46:14We need punishment. So we're like, okay, okay. Minus 10 if you miss your top 10 confidence game.
46:19And guess what happened? I missed mine. And you didn't miss yours.
46:23So I have no idea what my final score is.
46:26But I know that it's 10 points less than I would have if we were doing this a week prior.
46:32I mean, I don't feel great about it because the Jacksonville technically win was my 10 spot game.
46:38Which like, was it really? Was it really? Nick Sirianni should stay in Philly forever, in my opinion.
46:43Thank you for doing me a solid, Nick. I appreciate you.
46:47My question for you, Trev, because I have your point total in front of me.
46:51Keep in mind, you came into the week with a season total of 148.
46:56So you're up one point on me. Yeah. Do you think you hit double digits?
47:00No. I don't. Good instinct. You got eight points.
47:03Oh my gosh, that's it? You got eight, buddy.
47:06Dude, you know what? You know what? I told our producers before we started recording, if my number doesn't start with a
47:13minus sign, you know, as long as it's not negative overall points, as long as I get some positive points this week, I'm okay with that.
47:21But eight. So you got your three. You got your nine spot game correct, which was Jacksonville at nine.
47:27And you got Baltimore over Atlanta. So you got eight points from that, but you got minus 10 from your 10 spot game.
47:34And then the only other game that you got correct was Pittsburgh over Indy at your one spot, which ultimately ended up at eight points.
47:41As bad as that is, I think I did worse.
47:44Did I do worse? Oh, no. I'm pretty sure I did.
47:48No, because you didn't get minus 10. You wouldn't.
47:51Now, you didn't have a good week, my friend.
47:53I won't lie to you and tell you that.
47:56But you got 22 points. You got 22 points this week.
47:59So the non minus 10 in your equation really did a lot of heavy lifting here.
48:04But if I was up one last week, that means that you are now up 13.
48:09And that's doable. I was very scared as those games were coming to final on Sunday that you were going to be up 50 points or something.
48:18And I was going to have no prayer of catching you.
48:21But I can catch you for 13 points. I could do that.
48:25We're still alive in this one. The scores, much lower this week than they were last week.
48:30Not just from us, but also from the people as well.
48:33For the final standings, let's shout out some people who commented their game picks.
48:38And we keep score. And we'll shout out the best ones every single week.
48:42But breathe times two. A nice lesson for us after we had a bad week of picking.
48:4737 total points as the top scorer. Adam got 35.
48:50Bobby and PB9 both tied at 32. Those were the leaders for last week.
48:55I will say that the minus 10 rule absolutely drew blood this week everywhere where there were game picks.
49:00As 79 of the 102 people who submitted their picks put a team at number 10 that lost.
49:06And in fact, the biggest trap game was the one I had as my 10.
49:11The Bucs and the Cowboys, 98 out of 102 entries, Brett, picked the Dallas Cowboys to win that game.
49:16Only four people picked the Buccaneers to win. And breathe times two, the person who had the highest score this week.
49:23They ranked them at the 9th spot for confidence.
49:26Are you kidding me? Not only did they pick the Bucs to win.
49:30This is somebody who deeply hates the Dallas Cowboys.
49:32And I respect it for how many points they got for picking the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in this game.
49:38So, yes, that's the table that is set from the people here from last week.
49:43But they didn't hate the Cowboys enough to put the Bucs at the 10 spot.
49:47That's true. They didn't trust them entirely. But my God, well done.
49:5137 points. Shall we get into these, by the way?
49:54Let's do it. Let's dig into it. The first game that we have on the list is Houston versus Jacksonville.
50:00Divisional matchup here. And one that, boy, the Houston Texans very badly need.
50:04Who are you picking in this game? And where is it in the confidence rankings?
50:09This might be the homer in me. But I am taking Houston in this game.
50:14And I do have a legitimate reason for it.
50:16It's not just because they traded for Marvin Harrison Jr.
50:19That, to me, isn't the biggest factor here. When you lose your left tackle, the week before you're supposed to play against
50:26Will Anderson and Daniil Hunter, that is a massive point of concern if I was a Jags fan.
50:32Travis Hunter has played really, really well at corner so far this year, as we've talked about throughout the season.
50:38But that being said, even if he's matched up on Nico Collins, CJ spreads the ball around so much in this offense.
50:45And there are other weapons on the field that I think, even if Hunter does have a good day against Nico, obviously,
50:52you know, injecting Marv into this team is potentially their new X receiver.
50:56We'll see. And use Nico as a moving chess piece.
50:59I think there's enough targets here where Stroud can still have a good day through the air, even if Hunter has a great day.
51:06I still don't think the Texans are going to be able to run the ball that well.
51:11But it hasn't necessarily affected Stroud that much, you know, not having a run game.
51:16He's been great this year. Trevor's been great this year.
51:19It's a battle between two really good young quarterbacks.
51:22But ultimately, the Jags not having their left tackle against arguably the best edge duo in the league, that to me is hard to overcome.
51:29So give me the Texans. I put it at the four spot.
51:33Okay, so I put the Jags at the four spot.
51:36So we're starting off at the same spot here.
51:39We're just flipping teams. And I am definitely worried about the Jags offensive line overall.
51:44Anytime you have injuries and you're going up against the best duo that we have in the NFL, not ideal.
51:50So that's advantage Houston. But I will say that Houston's lack of ability to run the football and control this game the
51:56way that they would want to and keep that Jags offense off the field, I'm worried about that on their side of things as well.
52:04I think this is going to be a close game.
52:07I think this is a game where throw the records out of it.
52:11I don't care what the records are of this team.
52:14To me, this one's going to be really close.
52:17But I do have more faith in this Jacksonville team just because I think it's one of the best in the NFL.
52:24And where I think Houston is going to get better, is a really tough opponent on that road to getting better.
52:30So give me Jacksonville here in this one. I've also got that one at the four spot.
52:36Atlanta and Chicago. So remember, Ben Johnson kind of talked about, hey, there is a chance that Caleb Williams comes back.
52:42And certainly looking at the quarterback performance of the Chicago Bears last week, they would certainly love that.
52:48They're coming up against a Falcons team that was red hot before that overtime loss to Baltimore, which thank you, Baltimore, because
52:54if I didn't get those eight points from the Ravens, I would have been sitting at zero.
53:00So I'm very thankful for that one. But what do you think about Atlanta this week going up against the Chicago Bears?
53:06There is a really interesting dichotomy between pressured Michael Penix and unpressured Michael Penix.
53:11When Penix is not pressured, he was top two in EPA per dropback.
53:15When he is pressured, he is dead last. And that is something I am worried about for the Falcons.
53:20Luckily for them, the Bears pass rush isn't actually that great.
53:24And now that Dio is injured, it's not going to be great this week either.
53:28So if Penix is kept clean, they could have a lot of success offensively.
53:33And obviously, you know, Bichon's incredible. Drake London's incredible and all that kind of stuff.
53:37Really, the Falcons offense is going to struggle against teams that can actually just make Penix uncomfortable.
53:43Under pressure per next-gen stats. Last week against Baltimore, two of nine for like 3.6 yards per attempt.
53:48It just wasn't great. That third and five that could have clinched the game for them.
53:53He was under pressure against a zero look. Missed the throw against Bichon, where Bichon was matched up in space against a 40-year-old Calais Campbell.
54:01You hit that throw, you probably win the game.
54:04They didn't hit the throw. They didn't win the game.
54:07So that's the key thing for here on the Atlanta side.
54:10On the Chicago side, is Caleb playing yes or no?
54:13I believe he is. Just based on the pregame workout that he did this past week, it looked like they were really
54:20close to letting him go, but they wanted to be cautious with it just to make sure that there were no complications.
54:27I do believe he's going to play this week if I had to guess on that.
54:32And I still, you know, even with their banged up running backs and even with, you know, the secondary not playing super
54:38well last week, I still do believe that the difference in quarterback play between Caleb Williams and Michael Penix is big enough
54:45where I think the Bears are going to win this game.
54:48That being said, not very confident in it. Okay.
54:51I put it at the three spot. Okay. So I have the Bears winning this game as well.
54:57I have it. I have it at the seven spot.
55:00And I think that that just comes down to how much faith I have in Ben Johnson with Caleb Williams as his quarterback.
55:07Now, I think the interesting part in this game isn't necessarily Caleb himself, but it's how Caleb's presence can affect the run game for Chicago.
55:15Because you go back to that Packers game. Yeah, it was a massive gap on the scoreboard.
55:20But really, the difference in this game was how quickly the Bears let this script get away from them.
55:26And then they were not able to run the ball.
55:29You get into the second half of this game, I mean, you basically have to throw.
55:34You're down so much on the scoreboard. They're down two scores in the second quarter.
55:38You can't even play the game plan that you want to.
55:42And for as much as the talk is always about Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams and, you know, what they can do
55:48in this offense passing the football and all the explosives through the air, it's the run game, man.
55:54I mean, you go back to that Carolina game that they played in week one.
55:59Yeah, Caleb was great. It was the run game, man.
56:02They were running the ball all over the Panthers, and that's what they want to do.
56:07Now, the Falcons specifically have been great at defending the run this year.
56:11They're one of the better teams when it comes to yards per game allowed on the ground.
56:16They've been very sound in that area. So I think the Bears will need Caleb to be in this game to take
56:23off that pressure of the run game. But if he plays, and I agree with you, I think he does play.
56:29I think that offense is balanced enough, and I think that they're able to get it done.
56:34So I put Chicago at the seven spot here because I think it's going to be a little bit better for them
56:41on the ground because they're going to be a little bit more balanced in this game.
56:46Speaking of the Baltimore Ravens who defeated the Atlanta Falcons last week, Baltimore's taking on the Cleveland Browns.
56:52Browns coming off a loss to the New York Jets.
56:55What do you think about this game? Who are you taking, and where is it in the rankings?
57:00I'm taking Baltimore. I put it at the sixth spot.
57:03I don't think that Huntley had a remarkable day last week against Atlanta, but he did exactly what a backup quarterback is supposed to do.
57:11Second half in OT, he was 13 of 14, didn't even attempt to pass over 20 yards, only completed two passes over 10 yards.
57:18But if you're looking at the passing map and seeing how he distributed the ball underneath, he used every blade of grass under 10 yards.
57:26It wasn't just a, I'm pushing it to the boundary.
57:29He also used the short middle of the field too, which if you're going to play that kind of point guard style,
57:36that's exactly how you should be doing. You should be willing to work the middle as well.
57:41So I think whether it's Huntley or Lamar, as of right now, we don't know if Lamar is going to be back.
57:48But no matter who is in there at quarterback for Baltimore, I have confidence in their ability to execute this offense because
57:55they are still, even after starting Snoop, against a good Falcons defense, they're the number one offense in the entire league in terms of success rate.
58:03Like Declan Doyle is cooking no matter who is out there.
58:06So I have a lot of confidence in this offense.
58:09I have confidence in Jesse Minter in terms of game management over, let's just say the previous era.
58:15I think he's been overall very good at that.
58:17And, you know, Cleveland, I think they're better than I thought they would be going into this year.
58:23I think a lot of their young talent has played really well.
58:27Denzel Boston's been awesome. You know, they've been very good at getting yards after the catch.
58:32I just still feel like they're a year away from being a year away.
58:36And while this game will be close, I really do believe it's going to be close.
58:41Ultimately, I just have more faith in the baseline of the Baltimore Ravens than I do in the baseline of the Cleveland Browns.
58:48So give me the Ravens in this one narrowly.
58:51But I did put it at the confidence spot of six.
58:54Yeah, the Browns are still a team that is playing a lot of young guys.
58:59And I think early on in the season, they were playing above expectation.
59:03They really were able to surprise teams. And that's how you get a couple of those early wins for Cleveland.
59:09But I think this past week against the Browns, or excuse me, this past week against the Jets, you saw, okay, we're playing a lot of rookies.
59:17And it really showed up in this game specifically was how often Deshaun Watson was pressured.
59:22Deshaun was pressured on 26 of his 44 dropbacks.
59:25It's almost a 60% pressure rate. It's the second highest pressure rate Watson's faced in a single game since 2018.
59:31It was the most of an Aaron Glenn team since he took over for the New York Jets.
59:37And so they were really able to get after a younger offensive line.
59:41And even though the Ravens' pass rush isn't the best that it's been over the last half decade, I still think that
59:47this unit can rattle Deshaun Watson and this offense and a lot of these young guys, especially if the offense is playing at a pretty high level.
59:56Like you had mentioned, their success rate's been pretty consistently high all season long.
60:00If that's going to continue to be the case, which I think that it can be, give me Baltimore in this one.
60:07They were lucky for me in the eighth spot last week.
60:10Let's keep them in the eighth spot for this week.
60:13So I'll take Baltimore and I'll have them at the eighth spot.
60:17Football's back. Hey, it's Drew Franklin from NFL Cover Zero.
60:20Enjoy the NFL season while listening to NFL Cover Zero.
60:23We have storylines, predictions, and lots of silliness. Here's what you can expect from the podcast in our second season.
60:29When you meet people and you say your job's a sports announcer, it's always interesting to see what the first thing they say is.
60:37I did have one of the more difficult questions, though.
60:40He sits next to me and he sees I'm on my computer and he goes, big sports fan.
60:45And I was like, yeah, actually. And he goes, what do you think about my Jaguars this year?
60:51I realized like no one's ever asked me that question ever about anything.
60:55And I was like, do you think about this game?
60:58What do the Eagles do well? Like, I don't.
61:01Truly. It's one of those things that I can answer that question for you inconsistently.
61:05Like, I think that Hurts is still doing a nice job of avoiding the big negatives and escaping pressure when it's in
61:12the pocket versus an offensive line that's not ideal or not typical of a Philly offensive line over the last half decade.
61:19They can throw it deep. You know, when the game script kind of calls for it, especially outside the numbers because Hurts is good at that.
61:27But do they do those things consistently? No. Even though they're good at it, they don't do them consistently this year.
61:33So it's tough to answer that question. I think, you know, while Carolina does have some of their own issues, obviously they've been banged up on defense.
61:42You know, losing both corners doesn't help anybody. You know, I think the bye week came at a good time for them to try to get healthy again.
61:50But offensively, these two teams are not in the same tier.
61:54Like, not even close. Like, Bryce is playing fantastic.
61:56McMillan's playing more than fantastic. He's been unbelievable, especially now they're giving him more reps in the slot where he is just eating people alive.
62:04The run game was productive the last time we saw them.
62:07Young offensive line, you know, similar to Cleveland, I think has been a little up and down.
62:13But Bryce has been so good under pressure, it hasn't really mattered that much.
62:17I think Canalis is getting the most out of this team, even through the injuries that started back in August in camp.
62:24Like, we still haven't seen anything close to what a fully armed and operational Panthers team looks like when they're fully healthy.
62:30We won't this entire year because of some of their injuries.
62:34But they're still a really good team even through that.
62:37And they just do so many things well they can hang their hat on, especially offensively compared to the Eagles, that I
62:44just, I don't think they have an identity. I don't think they have anything they can really lean on to win this game.
62:51So give me Carolina. Put them at the 8th spot.
62:54So I also have Carolina in this game. I have them at the 5th spot right in the middle.
63:00And I have more faith in Carolina to execute this game plan the way that they want to.
63:05But they could potentially have some other heavy hitters coming back in this game, right?
63:10Devontae Smith could come back in this game. Saquon Barkley could come back in this game.
63:15And obviously they've had those guys and still had their struggles.
63:18But if those guys play, I think it's a lot closer.
63:22And I think they have the ability to keep this game closer than maybe most think.
63:26But when you talk about Bryce Young in this Panthers offense, it's fantastic.
63:30He's top 5 if not top 3 in passing yards, completion percentage above expected, EPA per dropback all against zone.
63:37He is an assassin this year. And anytime you have a quarterback who's playing that confidently, it's hard to bet against him.
63:43So even though I only have him at the 5th spot here, I do still have the Carolina Panthers at the 5th spot to beat the Philadelphia Eagles.
63:52The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tampa Bay, the team that tripped up everybody last week.
63:58Who are you picking in this game and where is he going on the confidence rankings?
64:02So the Steelers have been another one of these teams that has been really good at getting yards after the catch.
64:09They had 179 yards after the catch last week.
64:12You know, Aaron Rodgers, he's three straight games with three touchdowns.
64:15But a lot of that is just because his guys have been so good after the catch.
64:20And I do wonder if Tampa Bay is going to be able to do anything about Jalen Warren in space.
64:26It feels like nobody's been able to do anything about Jalen Warren in space so far this year.
64:32I do think that this is going to be a fairly close game.
64:36I don't necessarily think that Pittsburgh is, how do I say this diplomatically?
64:40I don't think they're going to be there in the end at the AFC.
64:44Okay. But I also don't think Tampa is even going to be in the playoffs at this point.
64:50So if we're just looking at which team is better, I would say Pittsburgh is better.
64:55But this reads to me like a battle of two teams that are not contenders.
64:59And so which one is just closer to being solid or just is solid?
65:04I would say that the Steelers, really exciting, young, talented offensive line, plus great running back, plus quarterback that's just not making mistakes.
65:11And Aaron Rodgers, you know, you have a woolly mammoth at tight end in Darnell Washington where you give him the ball and let him rumble.
65:19There's just so many things that they can do to you.
65:22That's what he is, man. Like he's just impossible to bring down by yourself.
65:26So like Rodgers doesn't have to make crazy throws.
65:29He just has guys that can make plays once they have the ball in their hands.
65:34And that's a tough formula to deal with. So yeah, give me Pittsburgh here.
65:38But I did put it at the one spot because I still, I'm not all the way in on the Steelers this year.
65:46I just think they're better than Tampa. Yeah, understandably so.
65:49I mean, it's interesting that you brought up Aaron Rodgers.
65:5222 of 31 passes last week. 235 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions.
65:55You'd be like, whoa, phenomenal day at the office for Aaron Rodgers.
65:594.1 air yards per attempt. That's his lowest of a single game this season.
66:03So you're right. That's the script. But even with that being the script, I don't know how much faith I have in
66:10the Buccaneers to be able to cover either Jalen Warren or Darnell Washington, like you mentioned.
66:15I think that Jacob Parrish has been fantastic and very reliable for them tackling.
66:19But he's just one man in that secondary. The rest is kind of up for grabs.
66:24I took Pittsburgh and I took them at the sixth spot here just because of, I don't think that Pittsburgh has a high ceiling as a team.
66:33But even the floor of this team, I think you have to kind of bet on that given all of Tampa's inconsistencies.
66:39Even last week, I mean, Tampa was great. Don't get me wrong.
66:43But you take out a couple of Bucky Irving, like crazy runs from this game and they might not even win that
66:50game against a Cowboys team that played horribly. So I just it's hard to have a lot of faith in this Tampa
66:57team until they really start to stack better games.
66:59And I'm not ready to bet on them yet.
67:02So give me Pittsburgh. Give me them at the sixth spot here.
67:06What about the Los Angeles Rams and the Arizona Cardinals as our next game here?
67:11A battle in the NFC West. That Cardinals game was not close.
67:14They they jumped out to an early lead. They got a couple or not even a couple.
67:19They got three three and outs in a row off the Lions.
67:23They had a 14 play drive that scored early.
67:26And then they went three and out, three and out, three and out, three and out, three and out.
67:32Back to back, back, back, back. And then through a pick going into halftime would, you know, it's arm punt last few seconds.
67:39Who cares? But you have six straight drives doing absolutely nothing.
67:42And in that time span, the Lions did touchdown, touchdown, touchdown field goal.
67:46Next thing you know, it's 24 to seven. So they started out getting three stops and with a lead and then just got steamrolled.
67:54This team is not close. They're really not close.
67:56And looking back on that win against the Chargers in week one, where initially we're like, oh, okay.
68:02Cardinals might be kind of feisty here. Like we like the Chargers.
68:06Now we know the Chargers are just bad. Yeah.
68:08Okay. That was that was bad team beating a bad team.
68:12Right. So I just I don't think there are anything near the Rams at this point.
68:17Not that the Rams don't have their own issues.
68:19Obviously, they do. But when the rubber meets the road and you play against a really good quarterback with really good weapons
68:26and a really good in a really good system.
68:29Even if you spot them seven points early, they can just have these avalanches happen against them when they do these three and outs.
68:36And, you know, their defense gets gasped because they're always on the field and the offense can't stay on the field.
68:43And it just looks like that. So give me the Rams.
68:46I'm very, very confident in this one. I put it at the nine spot.
68:51I'll do you one better. I put them at the 10 spot.
68:54I picked the Rams at the 10 spot in this game.
68:58And the reason why is because I think that these are teams that are going in different directions.
69:03I understand the Rams didn't win in overtime against the Bills, but I think they're looking better and better as a team overall.
69:10And even though I think that the Rams can certainly put up points, I trust or sorry, the Cardinals can put up points.
69:17I trust the Rams to be the better finisher in this game.
69:21And also, Brett, they have to win this game.
69:24They have to win this game because this is now the start of their run of Cardinals, Raiders, Chargers, Commanders, Cardinals.
69:30And in that five-game stretch, they basically have to win four out of those five games.
69:35And if you drop the first one, that's not the place that you want to be.
69:40So I think this Rams team knows that their back's against the wall here.
69:44They have to win this game against the Cardinals.
69:47And I think they're going to give the Cardinals their absolute best.
69:51So give me Los Angeles here. I've got them at the 10 spot this week.
69:55Staying in Los Angeles, the Chargers are taking on the Kansas City Chiefs.
69:59What do you think about this game? I got to go to the Chiefs.
70:04Similar kind of thing when we talk about the Eagles.
70:07What do the Chargers do well right now other than just stop the bleeding on defense?
70:12This is a very good defense in terms of EPA per play, but they're still 22nd in terms of points given up
70:19just because they have by far the most drives that start in their own territory this year.
70:24It's over three and a half per game that start in Charger territory that this Chargers defense has to deal with.
70:3019 total drives have started on their side of the 50.
70:34You can't play defense that way either. So I just, I feel bad for Chargers fans because it really did feel like
70:40going into this year, the hype really was at an all-time high, right?
70:44You bring in McDaniel. You have your tackles back.
70:47On paper, we like the weapons. You know, the defense, you're still keeping the same system with the same core of talent.
70:54Everything was lining up for them to just be a better version of what they were last year.
70:59And they are quite possibly the worst version of the Chargers that I've seen, even going back like multiple regimes.
71:06Like did the Brandon Staley era Chargers ever look this hopeless?
71:09I'm not sure that they have. And here we are five weeks into the season and they really do look hopeless.
71:15So even with the defense putting up a good fight, it hasn't really made that much of a difference.
71:21Give me the Chiefs by a lot in this game.
71:24I put it at the seventh spot. I, once again, I have this one a little bit higher than you.
71:31Give me the Chiefs and I'm going to put it at the ninth spot.
71:35Now, the only saving grace that I feel like I have for the Chargers is the Chargers have played the Chiefs close
71:42a lot over the last couple of seasons. And for the longest time, the Chiefs have been, and in ways still are, the crown jewel of that division.
71:50And no matter what, any of those three teams that go up against the Chiefs, the Broncos, the Chargers, the Raiders or
71:57whatever, they circle this game on the calendar. They go, okay, who cares what we did the rest of the year?
72:04If we can say we beat Kansas City, we're going to have some pride.
72:08And so again, just kind of like I've kind of talked about with the Rams, that they've got to win this game.
72:15I think the same with the Chargers. Because if you beat the Chiefs, it can be a mini turnaround for you.
72:21I think it's a little too late to be talking about the postseason with them in any way, shape, or form.
72:28But at least you're playing for some pride. You lose this game and that's avalanche continues to be in winless.
72:34Boy, this is going to get real ugly down the stretch of the season.
72:38So again, this feels like a game where, I mean, Herbert has looked just, I don't know, man, unfocused, it feels like at times.
72:45I mean, I don't even know what he's looking at.
72:48He's throwing the easiest interceptions of his entire career.
72:51Even for people who criticize Justin Herbert at the highest level, the interceptions that he's throwing this year are totally different.
72:58They're in a totally different level than anything that he has attempted and tried before.
73:02It's like he's just not seeing defenders. The run game's inconsistent.
73:06The O-line is beat up. The receivers aren't consistent.
73:08And the defense, you're right. I mean, it's been okay at times, but it can't hold up and it can't buoy this
73:15offense the way that the offense has been playing.
73:18All that to say, you beat the Chiefs, it's a totally different season.
73:22But I don't think they're going to beat the Chiefs.
73:25Give me Kansas City in this game and give me them at the ninth spot here.
73:30All right, next game, the Buffalo Bills against the Las Vegas Raiders.
73:34Bills coming off of a thrilling overtime victory against the Los Angeles Rams.
73:38Who you got in this one? So this is a really interesting matchup because I'm not entirely sure what approach the Raiders defense is going to take here.
73:46Yeah, right, right. They played with fire, played some quarters against Drake May.
73:50That's not something you want to do. It basically creates these one-on-ones.
73:54And if you're going to give Drake May a one-on-one, he's going to drop the ball in the bucket and he's going to score.
74:01Had three touchdowns just against quarters last week. This is not necessarily a team that majors in quarters.
74:07In fact, their most called coverage is cover three.
74:10They also play a bunch of cloud. But really, their only coverage that they're top 12 in is cover three.
74:16And if you're looking at Josh Allen specifically against cover three, it's a 105.7 passer rating against it this year.
74:22Eight and a half yards per attempt. Completion percentage over expected of 5.2%.
74:26He's not getting the same explosives that he did, specifically against these middle field closed coverages that when he had like Stefan
74:33Diggs and Gabe Davis back when Gabe Davis, all he did was catch 50 yarders.
74:37Right. It's not the same explosive rate against this coverage, but he's still very efficient against it.
74:43And he has a bunch of targets that are really good at finding these soft spots in the zone, especially against cover
74:49three, and just making these hook droppers' lives hell.
74:52So this is almost like a N'Kobe Dean versus Josh Allen kind of game.
74:56Yeah, that's what I thought too. Right? Like you and I are in the same spot.
75:01If anybody's going to get targeted a lot, it's going to be N'Kobe Dean.
75:06So how does he hold up here? That's what I'm really curious to see.
75:10Also, the Raiders' rush discipline has to be a lot better than the Rams was.
75:15We talked about that, obviously, where they were just giving these seams for Allen to step up through the front door.
75:21He already got 120 yards rushing on Monday night because the Rams were bad at rush lane discipline.
75:27So can they keep Allen contained in the pocket?
75:29And can these linebackers not get eaten alive when they're in cover three?
75:33Those are the two main questions. As far as the answers to that, I still lean towards Josh Allen and the Bills.
75:40I don't feel amazing about it, but if you ask me to just look at the top line of Josh Allen and
75:47the Bills versus Kirk Cousins and the Raiders, how close do you think the Raiders are to being at that level of team?
75:54A couple weeks ago, I would have said fairly close.
75:57After last week, less so. Yeah. So I'll take Buffalo narrowly.
76:00I put it at the five spot. I gave, I think, my respect to both sides.
76:05I don't think it's going to be a blowout.
76:08I don't think it's going to be an unentertaining game.
76:11In fact, I think it's going to be damn good TV, but I do think the Bills will win.
76:17I'm going to take the Bills as well. I only have it at my two spot, and that's because I'm a little uncertain on a handful of things.
76:26One of the big ones for the Raiders, and I think they can definitely keep it close in this game and maybe
76:32even get the upset because, look, if you play a certain style of coverage that Josh Allen just feels like he can
76:39get aggressive with and he can't, let's say you've got an extra deep defender and he's like, yeah, I'm still going to challenge it.
76:47I mean, we even saw that for the Rams.
76:49He had a throw where he was like, nah, okay, I don't care.
76:53I'm just going to challenge it anyways. You get too many of those and anybody can beat the Bills, and I think
77:00that's the pro and the con of Josh Allen, of course.
77:04You could beat anybody, but also if you beat yourself, well, you're letting everybody back in the door.
77:09But for the Raiders, the big issue for me is along their offensive line.
77:13That's where they really struggled last week for the first time all season.
77:17They only had one offensive lineman. It was DJ Glaze who had a pressure percentage below 12% in that game.
77:24Everybody else, I mean, I'm talking about quarterback pressures allowed.
77:27Colton Miller, five. Tyler Linderbaum, five. Spencer Burford, nine.
77:29Jackson Powers Johnson, five. I mean, they're just giving up pressures a lot to the Patriots, and that was a major issue.
77:36If that doesn't get better, they're not going to win.
77:39This is more of a toss-up game than I thought.
77:42So give me Buffalo, but give me them at the two spot.
77:46What about the Washington Commanders and the San Francisco 49ers?
77:49What do you think about this game? I'm really confident in the Niners.
77:53I'm also terrified because I put it at my 10 spot.
77:57Ah, there it is. There it is. 10 spots haven't been good for us lately, man.
78:01Looking at all the games this week and what our options were, it's like, I could have maybe done Carolina there.
78:08I maybe could have done the Rams there. Could have done the Chiefs there.
78:12But ultimately, if we're just looking at who is the best team out of those options, I would say San Francisco.
78:19As far as who can I rely on the most to get me a W when I absolutely need it because I
78:25don't want to lose 10 points, it is the Niners this year.
78:29They've been banged up in typical Niners fashion. They have not been completely healthy.
78:33It hasn't necessarily mattered that much. Yeah. Brock Purdy has played fantastic football all year long.
78:38He did get got once last week. You know, Mike McDonald got him with a really nifty Palms call, you know, picked him off there with Nehemiah Pritchett.
78:47But other than that, played a really efficient game.
78:50Mike Evans has just been a godsend for this team.
78:53Offensive line, at least before the Seattle game, was playing really, really good football.
78:57The defense, I mean, Grayson Halton has just emerged as a force for them on the inside.
79:02You know, you have great linebackers there, even though they are going to be down Drake Greenlaw in this game.
79:09But I just compare the quarterback play, the talent, the coaching, just all three of those things compared to what the commanders are working with right now.
79:17Especially situational awareness, the difference between these two teams, apparently.
79:20I have to go with the Niners. I really do.
79:23I also have to go with the Niners. I only have it in my three spot.
79:28And it's just because I was like, is this a letdown game for San Francisco?
79:33You know, they're riding high. They're coming off of the victory against Seattle.
79:37Obviously, the commanders are in the exact opposite spot.
79:39They should have had a victory and it obviously did not go well at the end.
79:44You were talking about that situational awareness. But they were still there at the end.
79:49They were forcing the turnover. They got the ball back.
79:52They marched in a field goal position. And I don't know.
79:55I saw more explosive plays for them when Jaden is back.
79:59Jaden was excellent as a scrambler as well. I know that the Niners have the linebackers to be able to handle that.
80:05But again, I'm taking the Niners in this game.
80:08It was just for whatever reason, I was just like, I don't know.
80:12Like, I could see Jaden playing Superman and almost being like, you know what?
80:17Screw it. Y'all, I'm throwing caution to the win.
80:19We got to start winning football games. And I guess it kind of has to start this week for them, especially with
80:26them being pissed off with how last week ended.
80:29So I'm going to go with the Niners. But I got them at three spots.
80:33So I'm giving Washington and maybe that desperation. I think that might be a theme of some of my picks here is
80:40some of the desperation that some of these teams might have and why I think that they're going to get a victory.
80:47Last game is the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers.
80:50Dallas coming off of a major letdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night football.
80:55Packers coming off of a red hot game where they defeated the Chicago Bears by letting Jordan Love just, man, throw it
81:02all over the yard, especially deep down the field.
81:05Do the Cowboys have what it takes to limit Jordan Love and what he wants to do with those deep passes?
81:11Who do you got winning this one? And where is it in the confidence for you?
81:16This is the one game of the week, and I seem to have one of these every single week where I just
81:23throw my hands up and say, I got no idea.
81:26I don't. We just we got no idea which version of the teams is going to show.
81:31Yes. Yes. I have no clue what we're going to get from week to week with these teams.
81:37And now that Mike Patton's involved and, you know, he's going to have influence on this defense.
81:42I don't even know what they're going to look like defensively.
81:45Not even effectiveness wise, scheme wise. I don't know what they're going to look like.
81:50Does he have like a little bit of an input?
81:53Like, hey, you know what? I'd maybe do a little bit here.
81:57Are they basically like, hey, buddy, you're basically calling things and he's not basically calling things.
82:02But you know what I'm saying? Like, we got to install more stuff because whatever we've done on defense has not worked to this point in the season.
82:10I mean, once upon a time in Philly where Christian Parker came from, you know, and it was Gannon who is the D.C.
82:17Vic Fangio was a consultant behind the scenes in Philly.
82:21This was like before he took the Miami job.
82:23And he had major input on the defense, even though he was living across the country over in Northern California.
82:30But as a consultant, he would roll into his office at Stanford every single day and give real actionable insights on what they should do.
82:37And they were really good defense. So I don't know how much input he's going to have here, but they didn't announce that they hired him for nothing.
82:46Right? Like, clearly he's going to be involved. And so I don't know what this defense is going to look like.
82:52I also don't know what the Packers offense is going to look like.
82:56Is this offensive line terrible? Are they good? We get different results from week to week.
83:01Maybe they'll settle somewhere in the middle, but I don't know what version of this Packers offensive line we're going to get either.
83:08So it's a battle between two teams that I don't have a good read on.
83:13When they're at their best, they can score on anyone.
83:16I'll say that about both of them, really. So maybe this is like a 33-31 type of game.
83:22But it could also very easily be kind of like that slop fest we saw against Dallas where the Cowboys just can't
83:28get going and they just can't get their defense off the field.
83:32And we end up with a low possession count, low scoring, kind of weird to watch game that's like 17-15 in the fourth quarter.
83:39It could go either way here. I have no clue.
83:42I'm taking Dallas. Okay. I don't feel good about it.
83:46Okay. And that's why I put it at the two spot.
83:49I also took Dallas and I put it at the one spot.
83:53So just very similar reasons of we have seen the best and the worst of these teams five weeks into the season.
83:59And that's such a small sample size to see such a strong variance of teams that it's hard to be able to
84:06predict what we are going to see here. Especially, it might be a little bit easier to predict if there wasn't the Mike Patton domino in there.
84:14But truly, who knows what's going to happen in this game.
84:18But give me Dallas. I'll take the Dallas Cowboys.
84:21Those are our 10. 10 up and 10 down.
84:23That's our confidence rankings. All right. Very fun show.
