A.J. Brown

NegativeInjury3:34

A.J. Brown suffered an injury during the game, which significantly impacted the Patriots' offensive rhythm and forced them into a bleak situation relying on Matt Collins.

Insight page
NegativeInjury23:09

AJ Brown left the game relatively early with an injury. His potential absence is a major concern for the Patriots' offense, especially given their upcoming difficult schedule against Pittsburgh and Jacksonville.

Insight page

Cooper Kupp

PositiveBreakout28:31

Cooper Kupp made an incredible play on a deep corner route, showing elite receiver skills to secure a difficult catch despite tight coverage from Marcus Jones.

Insight page

Drake Maye

NegativeBust0:11

Drake Maye had the worst game of his career, characterized by poor decision-making and three interceptions, particularly in the second half where he forced throws instead of taking the open checkdowns.

Insight page
NegativeProjection22:31

Drake Maye struggled significantly in the fourth quarter, throwing three interceptions on his final three drives. Despite a solid performance through the first three quarters—including 50 rushing yards and efficient play against the blitz—the late-game collapse was described as indefensible, though the source maintains a belief in his long-term talent.

Insight page

Drew Lock

NegativeRole20:19

Drew Locke is the primary backup for the Seahawks and would take over starting duties if Sam Darnold misses time. The source suggests that while the team's ceiling is lower with Locke, the Seahawks' defensive strength and schedule (Arizona and Washington) could allow them to remain competitive in the short term.

Insight page
NegativeProjection25:19

Drew Locke managed the game effectively as a backup, benefiting from a scheme that utilized boot action and play-action to provide him with easy throws, though he was aided by significant plays from his receivers.

Insight page

Hunter Henry

NegativeMatchup11:51

Hunter Henry was dominated by Uchenna Nwosu on an outside run play, resulting in the play being dead in the backfield.

Insight page

Jadarian Price

PositiveUsage17:59

Jadarian Price displayed notable explosiveness on his eight carries, including an explosive play on his first NFL carry. The source advocates for increasing his share of the backfield committee, noting that he provides a tangible difference in speed and playmaking ability compared to the rest of the Seahawks' rotation.

Insight page
PositiveSleeper29:59

Jadarian Price showed explosive potential on his first NFL carry, and Drew Locke advocates for increasing his share in the Seahawks' backfield committee despite his rookie mistakes.

Insight page

Jaxon Smith-Njigba

PositiveBreakout22:26

Jaxon Smith-Njigba was a key playmaker for the Seahawks, including a crucial fourth-and-one conversion where his quickness and ability to break tackles turned a short completion into a game-breaking play.

Insight page

Rhamondre Stevenson

NegativeUsage7:17

Rhamondre Stevenson was utilized as a checkdown option in the passing game, providing positive plays when the Patriots took what the defense gave them underneath.

Insight page

Romeo Doubs

NegativeUsage5:03

Romeo Dobbs was not heavily involved in the game plan before A.J. Brown's injury and dropped a potential explosive play that could have changed the game's outcome.

Insight page
NegativeUsage24:17

The Patriots failed to effectively target Romeo Dobbs after AJ Brown left the game, which the source attributes to poor offensive planning and fear of the offensive line's pass protection capabilities.

Insight page

Sam Darnold

NegativeInjury0:07

Sam Darnold suffered an injury on the first drive of the game, forcing him out of the contest and leading to Drew Locke taking over at quarterback.

Insight page
NegativeInjury19:09

Sam Darnold suffered a hip injury that caused him to limp off the field, but subsequent reports from the team and media indicate that a fracture has been ruled out. While his status for Week 2 remains uncertain, the news is considered a significant relief, suggesting he may avoid a long-term absence.

0:00Welcome to The Athletic Football Show brought to you by the US Bank Smartly Visa Signature Card.
0:05I'm Robert Mayes. Game one is in the books.
0:07The Seahawks somehow pulled this one out despite losing Sam Darnold on the first drive.
0:11Some inexplicable decisions by Drake May in the fourth quarter.
0:14We dug into all of it with me, Derek and Dave.
0:17Let's get to that conversation right now. Football is back, baby, and did not disappoint.
0:21Seems like we might get a little bit of a stinker early on with Drew Locke coming in, Sam Dern on going
0:26out on the first drive, and then we get a pretty exciting game with some very questionable choices and some curious moments there in the fourth quarter.
0:34It was a rock fight for a lot of it, but at least it came down to at the end.
0:39It was like JSN makes a crazy play. It still comes down to the final drive really for both teams having like
0:45really impressive or really important drives there at the end.
0:48It started off slow. The Sam Darnold injury was weird, but it became a game that reminded me why this sport is awesome.
0:54I don't want to be the ungrateful person like we waited nine months and then and there was a lot to like
1:00about this game, but that was so stupid. Like everything we just saw was so stupid from the Darnold injury to whatever
1:05the hell Drake May was doing in the second half of that game.
1:09Like just just a bizarre way to get back into it like a very sick start to the 2026 season.
1:14I mean, I can't believe that just happened. It's I was right.
1:17I was I was ready to just walk off into overtime.
1:20I was like, all right. Well, you know, yeah, they'll get the field goal.
1:24We'll go to overtime. Let's see. And then I looked up and as the play was finishing, I cannot believe he just
1:30did that everything like OK, the pick is is one thing and we can talk about it.
1:34And it was really dumb. And Drake May just worst, worst game of his career.
1:38That is the worst game of his career. At least pretty poorly in the Super Bowl, too.
1:43Well, yeah, yeah. The Super Bowl, they felt somehow more outgunned.
1:46That is a very good point. I think they were completely outmanned in the Super Bowl.
1:50The pass protection plan is completely fell apart. And they were just yeah, there was worse.
1:55They had scattered issues against pressure looks today, but they weren't completely overwhelmed up front the entire game like they were in this.
2:01Yeah. My memory of watching the Super Bowl was like, well, this is ugly.
2:04But what do I expect Drake May to do in this game?
2:08I was like the Drake May could have done more than he did in this game.
2:12Yes. But what I also wanted to mention is and I know A.J.
2:15Brown got hurt. But Matt Collins is your go to guy all the way down the field to try to get a win against the defending champions.
2:23It's so bleak that that's where the Patriots were at the end of this game, even if there was a good reason for it in the A.J.
2:30Brown injury. After the A.J. Brown injury, we get to an unfortunate place where the offense felt very similar to what we
2:36were dealing with last year, where they couldn't run the ball consistently throughout this entire game until that last drive.
2:41They were getting punked on the ground the entire game.
2:44They might have had more successful runs on that drive than they did for the entire rest of the game before that.
2:49They ended at 24 percent rushing success rate per next gen.
2:52I'm looking at the stats right now with 723 left in the third quarter.
2:56They had two successful runs on 12 running back carries.
2:59It was 12 carries for 22 yards. And then you're throwing the ball to Matt Collins because weirdly, Romeo Dobbs was not
3:05involved in a lot of the game before A.J.
3:07Brown got hurt, which dropping one of what would have been probably three explosive plays might do that to you.
3:12That was a swing play for New England. If he catches that ball, they'd probably win this game.
3:17Because May throws the pick right after that. The next play.
3:20It was the next play on that third and 14.
3:23He throws the pick. But the interception, I mean, let's just, yes, that play doesn't happen if Romeo Dobbs catches the ball.
3:29When you look back at a box score and you see a game where the quarterback threw three interceptions, a lot of
3:35it is, ah, there were two bad plays. There was one tipped ball, whatever.
3:38All three of these, there was a tipped interception.
3:41But the decision that led to the tipped interception was completely indefensible.
3:44Like, all three of these are balls just should not be thrown.
3:47And I think they got, like, progressively worse. The first one is they're trying to.
3:51The last one is clearly the worst one. The last one is the worst one.
3:55And the first one, they're trying to throw this, like, play-action shot play down the left-hand side.
4:00And they're playing cover two to that side. They hadn't thrown a shot all game.
4:04Sometimes you call it, you just throw it. It's never open.
4:07He throws it up for Romeo Dobbs. It's intercepted.
4:09It's a bad play. The checkdowns are, like, wide open on that play, too.
4:13I think he probably was tired of checking down in this game.
4:16I think that is exactly what happened. Yeah. They were tired of it.
4:19When you watch it happen in the first half, when he was just picking on things underneath, they did a really good
4:25job against the Blitz on those third and shorts and mediums throughout the entire first half.
4:30They had quick answers. Even on plays, there was one specific third down where Spoon was untouched.
4:34They got rid of the ball so quickly that it didn't matter.
4:37The checkdown to Stevenson up the left sideline in the second half.
4:41When they were taking what was there underneath, they were consistently finding positive plays.
4:44Every single time, he tried to bite off a little bit more in the second half.
4:49We had three straight drives and with interceptions for the exact reason that you're talking about.
4:53When you get bored, this team wants you to get bored.
4:56Yes, that's the whole point. That's exactly what they're trying to do.
4:59They want to put you in a spot where we're going to stop the run and we're going to put you in disadvantageous down-and-distance situations.
5:06We're going to make you consistently make completions underneath.
5:08And as soon as you get bored doing that, the pass rush is either going to get home or we're going to force you into a bad decision.
5:15They forced him into three of them. I would also like to say, and Drake May deserves the criticism that's coming his
5:21way if this is how you're going to start your season after last year.
5:25But our line on the Seahawks heading into the year was secondaries a little thinner than you would prefer.
5:30Nicky Manwari didn't play in this game. Granted, it's one week.
5:33But my lasting memory of Nehemiah Pritchett from last year was not being ready for prime time against the Buccaneers.
5:38Well, he had a phenomenal game and came away with that weird bobbled pick and was just generally very good.
5:44Did the PBU on the play where Brown got hurt?
5:46Very good contesting plays. Yeah, I mean, it sucks that Brown got hurt, but that was a sick play by Pritchett.
5:52And then Rodney Thomas, who got called up from the practice squad because Imanwari couldn't go, had a fantastic night from Seattle's
5:58quote unquote no name DBs in this game. And that doesn't mean this isn't something we have to keep our eye on,
6:04but very encouraging if you're Mike McDonald watching those guys in this spot.
6:07And then the front, I don't think the four man pass, the pressure numbers are going to look okay.
6:12I think that's a combination of some of the actual blitz and pressure looks and May holding out of the ball a little bit.
6:19He had answers as a scrambler at times when the pocket started collapsing.
6:22But other than the Byron Murphy play where Leo Leonard Williams picks up the sack in the second half, there were not
6:28a lot of very quick four man pressures in this game.
6:31But you felt that front against the run. You felt that front against the run the entire game.
6:36I mean, Eli Rairden having to, the little split zone where he's having to kick out Yushinuosu on I think the second drive of the game.
6:43And that front, when you're having to try to run the ball against them, even if they didn't take over as pass
6:49rushers today, they made their presence known throughout the entire game.
6:52And then they piece it together in the back end well enough.
6:55Nosu might have been the player of this game for them.
6:58Like he was phenomenal. He has that, that play against Rairden where he, I mean, it was like, yeah, second or third play of the game.
7:05That was a welcome to the NFL buddy. And then early on in the third quarter, Nosu had an insane two play
7:11run where they tried to run outside run his way.
7:13He explodes Hunter Henry and the play is just like dead in the backfield.
7:17And then the very next play after that, they run this like, it's kind of a gun toss.
7:22It's kind of like they're throwing it. It ends up being ruled incomplete.
7:25But Nosu has a hand on the running back, like as the ball is arriving, like he almost gets a hand on it and like puts it down.
7:33And like just what he was doing for them, especially in run defense in this game was it's phenomenal.
7:38He's like the unsung hero. I think of that front.
7:40It was really fun to see them kick into high gear in the second half of this game.
7:45Not that they were bad in the first half.
7:48I mean, the score was seven to nothing, but they just, they were humming the way we remember from last year from like the mid third quarter on.
7:55And then even, you know, the, the Patriots managed to string together, which ironically, I love the way the Pats played that drive.
8:01Like it was so methodical. They were so liberal with the clock.
8:04Like they got the ball with five and a half minutes to play.
8:08And we're going to have that drive be the end of the game one way or the other, either overtime or we win.
8:14And then, you know, Drake may kind of derailed it with that decision making there.
8:18But I guess to your point, Derek, I mean, he gets paid a lot of money to do this.
8:23But watching DeMarcus Lawrence hurdle an offensive tackle, maybe that short circuited his brain.
8:27I don't know. Morgan Moses, yeah, tries to cut block DeMarcus Lawrence coming off the right edge.
8:31And Lawrence just like hops right over him and just gets a hand and make May's face.
8:36And Lawrence is massive. So throw the ball out of bounds.
8:39Well, there's one thing you cannot do. That's the thing.
8:42I don't mind him trying to throw to the end zone and giving Matt Collins a chance.
8:46Matt Collins is like 6'4". If you're going to miss, you have to miss out of bounds.
8:51You cannot miss a yard inside of bounds where a guy like, who was that, Job, I think, ended up making that play.
8:57Which you can't give the DB a chance there.
8:59If you want to throw it, fine, but leave it three feet over his head.
9:03I meant to shout out Job when I shouted out the younger guys.
9:07I mean, he gave up the DPI on the underthrown flea flicker.
9:10But to come back and he's got to be the guy this year.
9:13He got the money and Tariq Wollin didn't. And that's a hell of a way to start your season as the guy
9:19that needs to step up in the secondary. Those corners were tackling, too.
9:23Oh, absolutely. Job had one on. They threw a check down to Stevenson in the right and he just blew him up.
9:29And then there was one. They have to play that way, right?
9:32Yeah. Because there are so many pressures where they're trying to make you get rid of the ball quickly in this game.
9:38And if you're going to play like that, your guys in the second and third level have to tackle.
9:43And this team does exactly that. It's just so awesome seeing literally guys who were not supposed to be week one starters
9:49for them, especially like Pritchett had one on the final drive where it was third and two and they throw a flat route to Mario Douglas.
9:55He just stops him in his tracks and they force a third and one.
9:59And obviously, you know, they still end up converting.
10:02But just incredible how well this team tackles on the back end.
10:05You mentioned the flea flicker. It's an important play to point out just because that was the only play down the field
10:11that the Patriots had the entire game. They may finish 0-4 with three interceptions on passes of 20 plus yards per next gen.
10:17They had nothing down the field this entire game.
10:19That was the one play where they had a positive outcome while trying to push the ball and it was on a trick play.
10:26Yeah. I mean, he had a couple darts that were probably like 16 to 18 yards.
10:30The decent in the intermediate area, yes. But yeah, like anything beyond that, nothing doing whatsoever.
10:34Those were all three interceptions came on deep throws.
10:37And again, just two of them were into cover six looks.
10:40The one you said that that was the corner sinking underneath it when he tried to throw like the de facto hole shot to Dobbs.
10:46And then the one to Julian Love is just there's nothing going there.
10:50I mean, that seam ball, Spoon does a great job of carrying it.
10:53And then as soon as it gets into the middle of the field, Julian Love is able to clamp down on that thing.
10:59And it's just a decision that can't happen. And it's frustrating because May is at his best last year.
11:04It was so methodical and his ability to just create positive plays over and over and over again.
11:09We've seen him do that for long stretches. And then you get to a game like this and you just watch him
11:15press way more than he needs to in some of these moments.
11:18This was a game where the Seahawks tried to beat themselves pretty often for two thirds of this game.
11:23When you think back to some of those moments, the false start or the lining up offsides on the sneak on what
11:29should have been a huge third, like third, third into fourth down conversion.
11:33You have multiple other penalties that the drive that probably should have put it away when they kick the field goal to go up 13 to 10.
11:40They have a delay of the delay of game there.
11:43Like this is a brutal game to lose when the other team loses its starting quarterback on drive number one.
11:48And then throughout the game has four or five notable mistakes that should put you in the driver's seat.
11:53And then you consistently fumble this thing away. I'm not going to say gift wrapped because you still have to go against that defense.
11:59But this is a unique opportunity where no matter how good the Patriots might be, you're like defending champions almost never lose these games anyway.
12:06And this is a loaded team playing in that building.
12:09Even if the Patriots are great, I don't like their odds of winning this game.
12:13And then you lose Sam Darnold on the first possession of this game.
12:16It is absolutely brutal to lose that opportunity knowing that the schedule on paper at least looks a hell of a lot harder this year.
12:23All right. Let's take a quick break here and then come back and chat a little bit about the Seahawks offense in this game.
12:29Obviously, the Seahawks defense deserves a ton of credit for keeping them in this game and really making sure that they were around at the end.
12:36Not only with the way they played down to down, but obviously taking the ball away three times.
12:41But enough moments from Drew Locke and the Seahawks offense in this game to get things over the finish line.
12:46I was worried early on. I was worried early on.
12:49The couple third downs we saw. And Seattle or New England mostly played a ton of zone on early downs and then
12:55was playing man on third down early in the game.
12:58And the first couple third downs, I think the second and third drive, we have, well, there were multiple kind of flubs
13:03on third down for this first Seattle in the first half.
13:06That second drive that they had, they had a second and two where Price bounces it and probably easily could have gotten
13:12the first down if he had just hit the hole.
13:15He bounces it outside, gets stuffed on third and two.
13:18Christian Ellis makes a great play screaming downhill. They force a punt there.
13:21Third and five on the next Seattle drive. Locke is nearly picked by Gonzo in man coverage.
13:26And then on the first drive, I'm pretty sure that was when Darnold was still in.
13:30Gonzo, they had a bunch on the right side with JSN and Gonzalez had fantastic coverage on him there.
13:35So you had three third down failures for Seattle in their first three drives.
13:39Then you get the Barner sneak with the offside.
13:41And then in the second half, I mean, the biggest play of the entire game is obviously the fourth and one to JSN.
13:47Like that is the biggest play of the entire game where that's a good call to get a conversion that a great
13:53player turns into a play that breaks the game.
13:55It was such a cool call because it's, they really just end up running spot where JSN's running the little snag.
14:01But they run it with like a, like a boot action into it, which you don't see a lot.
14:06But the whole defense is fast flowing. They're seeing boot.
14:09They're seeing the fullbacker running back into the flat.
14:11They're seeing a guy running a deep corner and everyone just kind of clears out this little space for, yeah, that should
14:17be a conversion and a, I don't know, 12 yard completion.
14:20But Craig Woodson is the safety who's trying to come down from depth and make that tackle.
14:25Making a tackle on depth from JSN is really hard.
14:27He's really quick. And so he misses that tackle.
14:30And then AJ Barner just goes up and finds Kevin Byard, who I thought could have made a play and made a
14:35little bit of a squeeze on that tackle attempt.
14:38And he kind of lets Barner get in his face.
14:41And then JSN's just, it's the gas. I watched a lot of Kevin Byard last year.
14:45I watched a lot of Kevin Byard trying to make plays in space last year.
14:49The interceptions are cool. A lot of the other stuff can be frustrating.
14:52That's all I'll say. As somebody who watched a lot of Kevin Byard football last season, the idea that they were upgrading
14:58its safety by moving on from Jalen Hawkins and getting Kevin Byard, I never really understood that.
15:03And we're one game in, but just that's, that play right there, I think is a very good encapsulation of the 2026
15:09Kevin Byard experience, who is now how old? Oh man.
15:11I mean, if you're having to Google it, it's a problem.
15:1433. I was going to say. He just turned 33.
15:1716, 17. So just, just throwing it out there.
15:19I thought, and this might've been the plan for Sam Darnold as well as Drew Locke, but with Drew Locke in there,
15:25the amount of boot stuff or the threat of play action, like it seemed like it did a lot to mitigate what the Patriots were able to do.
15:33And like attacking the flat, like on the JSN play, you can see them crashing on the route to the flat because
15:38the Seahawks did that so many times in this game.
15:41I thought they did a really great job of keeping the Patriots off balance enough to give Drew Locke easy throws.
15:47Doesn't mean it always worked, but although I will say like in this, he found a really nice rhythm there, which ironically
15:53was disrupted by the penalty that screwed up. That was the best drive of the game that they had.
15:58Yeah. In terms of like stacking completion, they actually kicked the field goal when he, when he got the snap off correctly, he was fine.
16:04They just had like three different procedural. That was definitely a week, a game one from a new play caller performance today.
16:10With the backup quarterback. Some of the procedural stuff that was happening with a backup quarterback, but that drive specifically that you're
16:16talking about, they have Barner kind of blocking down, sneaking into the flat for an easy completion.
16:21They did the same thing with JSN on the next play.
16:24The play after that, the completion that they had a little quick motion to the flat with the back.
16:29It essentially turns into slap flat with Cooper cups sitting down in that hole.
16:32That's an easy completion. And so just making sure, all right, how can I consistently find those easy options for my backup quarterback?
16:39I think they really did a good job of tapping into that during that drive in the second half and they should
16:44have just put it away right there. And then again, this was a game where just too many self-inflicted moments from Seattle
16:50that ended up not mattering, but it was a frustrating game overall.
16:53You could see like the seam coming out of Mike McDonald's ears at a certain point with all of these things that
16:59were just stacking up over the course of the game.
17:02Drew, Drew Locke didn't play poorly, all things considered, but his, if you're just box score watching his stat line is fantastic.
17:08Oh, it's fantastic. But it helps when JSN takes a five yard completion.
17:11And then the other big completion that I'm going to give more credit to the receiver on that play than the quarterback, the Cooper cup.
17:18Yeah. That was nasty. That slot fade to Cooper cup.
17:21I think it was a slot fade, but that like, I can really like a deep corner.
17:25It was deep corner. Yeah. But just a deep corner out of a bunch, but that's a play where that's really good coverage by Marcus Jones.
17:32And it just doesn't matter. Cooper cup makes an incredible play on that ball.
17:36All right. Before we move on, let's take one more quick break.

17:59This is purely just rooted in the fact that I picked Jadarian price for offensive rookie of the year a couple of
18:04days ago, but, and I know the Seahawks are going to, they're going to do their committee thing and that's fine, but I don't know.
18:11Tick, tick that share up for Jadarian price. Even he's going to make some mistakes.
18:15He's a rookie. I get it. But like, he's got the juice that, and we knew that he was drafted in the
18:21first round for a reason, but just seeing it on an NFL field in a real game.
18:26Play. Yes. So the first play had an explosive on his first NFL carry.
18:29And even like you mentioned the one where he took it outside when he probably shouldn't have, but good stuff happened when
18:35they gave him the ball the vast majority of the time.
18:38Yeah. I would like to see a little bit more, especially if we're going to have to spend any extended time without Sam Darnold.
18:44I would like to see a little bit more Jadarian price.
18:47I want he had eight carries in this game.
18:50Well, one successful run on eight carries Jadarian price had five on his 10.
18:54Yeah. So, and you, you just feel it. You just feel the difference in the explosiveness when he is in the game right now.
19:00And so I would like to see them lean on him a little bit more.
19:04I guess we have to talk about what the outlook would be for Seattle without Sam Darnold.
19:09I mean, this there's a chance that it sounds like a hip injury.
19:12He was limping very noticeably when he was walking off.
19:15And the fact that he was already getting x-rays on it.
19:18And I think he was taken somewhere for more testing that genuinely concerns me.
19:21Like there is a chance that he has a serious hip injury and is going to miss a ton of time.
19:27Yeah. And even if you're excited about what Seattle's defense can be, and they do a good job of pulling out a
19:33game like this, the outlook drastically changes. If drew lock has to play for any extended period of time, it just does.
19:39It absolutely does. Like you hope it's just a short-term thing.
19:42Cause in the short term, they get Arizona and Washington.
19:44They can survive those games with just about anybody, a quarterback.
19:47I think after that, it gets really hard. You get the chargers, you get the niners, you get the Broncos, you get the chiefs, you get the bears.
19:55Like it does get difficult after that, where some of those, you might have to win some games where you're going to
20:01have to score more than, I mean, they needed what 13 today.
20:04You're going to need more than that against a majority of those teams.
20:07And so I do think that there's a chance that you get drew locks and practice reps.
20:12You still have a guy like JSN. If your daring price gets a little bit more comfortable, can pop a couple of explosives.
20:18I think they can live through it. But you just hope that it's not a multi-month issue here for Sam Darnold.
20:24And he broke a sip. He's out for the year.
20:26Oh, wait, he broke it. If he did. Oh yeah.
20:29I was like, Whoa, if we already got there yet, but no, if he did, he's yeah, he's done.
20:34You can't do it. You can't play quarterback without a hip.
20:37That's where all your power comes from. I mean, I don't want to, I don't want to forecast too much.
20:42Although, Oh, Tom Pellicero. We're just, we're just live right now.
20:45Uh, McDonald's said that they got good news on Sam Darnold.
20:48So I can't, I don't know. I, it's hard for me to imagine that means he'll be ready for week two, but
20:54I mean, you're breathing a sigh of relief if it's like a month or less.
20:58Totally. In fact, I mean, he said ruled out a fracture with that.
21:01Okay. So the fact that we've ruled out that literally just happened.
21:05That's coming across the timeline as we're sitting here right now.
21:08Pellicero, Garofalo, Brian Nemhouse are all tweeting. I mean, he's doing live from the press conference.
21:12And so that's fantastic. That would be, that's huge.
21:14And then if it's a couple of weeks and you just said, they play Arizona and Washington, you can survive that stretch.
21:20I was going to say though, without trying to forecast Sam Darnold, like in the first half of that game, it's easy
21:26to sit there and say like, okay, what trades can you do?
21:29Who's available? Like what, what might the Seahawks need to do?
21:32But by the time you get to the end of the game, you, you give Drew Locke the starter reps in practice.
21:38And this defense is going to drag almost everyone they play into the deep water.
21:42And like, that's just how it's going to have to be.
21:45Like I, obviously the ceiling is lower without Sam Darnold, but I think the way they're built, they're going to try to
21:51be a 10 or 11 win team with Drew Locke.
21:53Like, I don't see a, a more realistic path forward than that.
21:57I think that's right. I'm not sure that there is like a better option out there than what Drew Locke can give you, especially for a short stint.
22:04And the idea that it's not broken and that he might be back sooner rather than later.
22:09We don't have to have that conversation. I think that's, can we get by for a couple of weeks?
22:14And then the answer is absolutely yes. Based on everything else that you have.
22:17Do we want to, is there any need to have like a broader Patriots offense conversation after a game like this?
22:23Or are we just off of a, it's one game stacked onto four games against really good defenses.
22:28Those are the last five glimpses we've gotten of the Patriots.
22:31It's really disappointing that Drake may played this way, but.
22:33And like, I don't want to sound like I'm letting Drake may off the hook because I'm like, I'm deeply disappointed by
22:39some of the decisions that he made and he clearly played a really poor game, but.
22:44I expected this to be a slog. Like you're going into Seattle to play this defense.
22:48Even reek. Well, and not there, I get it, but this is still a fantastic unit.
22:52We were concerned going in about the Patriots offensive line.
22:55Even Derek and I who were bullish on the Pats.
22:58I knew they were losing this game. And like, granted, I thought Sam Darnold would play all 60 minutes, but.
23:03Um, I'm not gonna drastically change my opinion just yet, unless which now it would be really great to get some good news on AJ Brown.
23:10Hopefully he's not out for a prolonged period of time.
23:12If he missed, if he misses a significant amount of time, I'm pretty worried.
23:16Cause the schedule is tough. Like it, I think it's Pittsburgh next and Jacksonville after that, like the Patriots schedule doesn't let up.
23:22And so if, if, if we're throwing a Mac Collins in crunch time for the foreseeable future, I can't say I like that very much.
23:29Yeah. Then you're very close to again, what they were at the end of last season, the offensive line theoretically is better.
23:35And I think the run game will probably look better than it did tonight, but it wasn't good tonight.
23:40Right. I mean, if you had any concerns about the Patriots, this was like worst case scenario in every way.
23:45And I think I'm with Dave with may specifically.
23:48I mean, I do think he's very good. This is probably the worst game he's ever played, but I expect him individually
23:54to be better and smarter than he was, especially in some of these critical moments.
23:58But some of the other worst stuff, like. Josh McDaniels, I thought clearly outgunned in this game and Mike McDonald is going
24:03to do that to a lot of people, but it just did not learn look like they had learned a lot of lessons.
24:10I mean, even though a lot of those backup and, and, you know, guys like Job, who is a starter, but not necessarily a star cornerback.
24:17That to me feels like if you have AJ Brown and I know he went out, you know, relatively early in this
24:22game and you sign Romeo Dobbs, let's like drop back a little bit more and like try to target those guys.
24:28And they just did not really do that. It seemed like they were, that's probably them being scared of their offensive line, but that's the other issue.
24:35They made some investments in shuffles on the offensive line and they still kind of got punked in this game, not as
24:41much one-on-one, but still just not being able to pick stuff up.
24:44So. So I think I'm weirdly encouraged by the offensive line in this game compared to what it looked like last time.
24:50I kind of agree with Dave. I don't know.
24:53I'm not saying it's good, but it's, I think the plan leaves something to be desired.
24:57But when they brought four, it was not a situation where he was under siege in this game.
25:02I will say Campbell looked like what you wanted him to look like.
25:05Other than penalties. Right. Other than some of the penalties, but I thought he looked more like the player he did for
25:11a lot of his rookie season where it was like, sure.
25:14Some of the elite guys are going to nuke him a little bit, but he was a good pass protector for a lot of it.
25:21I was still concerned with how bad the run game looked and them still getting the run game is a different conversation.
25:26I think to me, it's more about holding up and pass protection when they only brought four.
25:31And I think they did a fine job doing that today, but I've talked about this like it.
25:36And I, the only thing I would say as somebody, I think the one of the three of us, who's been the
25:42most bearish on the Patriots offense and the Patriots offensive line, I'm not going to have any strong reactions until I see them play a front.
25:49That doesn't involve these dudes where you'd shut into.
25:51Oh, Sue is the backup edge that you're having to deal with.
25:54Like it's just a different sort of beast. Unfortunately, any line they're going to play.
25:58I mean, it is the, and the Seahawks are on a different level, but it's Pittsburgh and Jacksonville.
26:03Like it doesn't necessarily get easier. Yeah. And that is the exact perspective, right?
26:07Like run defending edges. That's those are some big guys.
26:09Yeah. The Jacksonville specifically. Yes. It's, it's too early for me to panic unless AJ Brown is going to be out for
26:15a lot of time, which I really hope is not the case.
26:19Just a brutal game to lose if you're the Patriots, just an absolutely brutal game to lose beyond the Darnold stuff.
26:24Just how many times Seattle tried to let that game out of their grasp in the first half.
26:29And the fact that you couldn't take advantage of it and credit to the Seahawks.
26:33I mean, again, this is a team that just never goes away.
26:36Never goes away. It doesn't matter what type of game it is.
26:39It doesn't matter how the first three quarters went.
26:42They just never go away. I'm glad you said first three quarters because, and if this sounds like cope, I'm sorry.
26:47I'll say it one more time. Drake may played like shit full stop, but heading into the fourth quarter, he was doing
26:53just enough to get an ugly win against a great defense.
26:56I thought he was actually playing fine. And like, I mean, he finished by then he only had one interception.
27:01He hadn't, he didn't throw his first pick until the fourth quarter.
27:05Were they all in the fourth? They were the final three drives.
27:08They were all in the fourth quarter. Wow. He was doing enough in the passing game.
27:12He had 50 rushing yards. I think he had the Patriots.
27:15Remondre had one late in the game, but he had one of like two explosive runs.
27:19I thought he was handling a lot of those situations very well.
27:23Like all of those third downs, what he was doing against the blitz, what he was doing with his legs.
27:28It's indefensible what happened in the fourth quarter, but I don't think he played poorly for most of the game.
27:33The Patriots go up 10, nothing with seven minutes to play in the third.
27:37And it was like, Drake may is going to do just enough to eke out the ugliest win ever.
27:42And everybody's going to hate it because Sam Darnold wasn't there.
27:45And, and, you know, Drake, the schedule may rides again.
27:48And then the Seahawks, man, they, like I said, they just kicked into a different gear.
27:52Like immediately when that happened, not only did the offense get its first scoring drive of the night, but the defense just started looking like the Superbowl team.
27:59It was, it was really, like I said, it was really cool to see them.
28:03You could just kind of feel them like tighten their chin straps as, as we inch toward the fourth quarter.
28:09We also did not mention the fact that the Seahawks had a roughing the punter penalty in the second half of this game.
28:15Sure. Just throw that on the pile. I mean, there were just so many moments that the Patriots could have taken advantage of and did not.
28:22Mike McDonald is going to be furious when he, like when he's done breathing a sigh of relief that Darnold's injury might.
28:28In fact, they won the game. Yeah. Yes. There's enough good, I think for him to get through the night, but going
28:34back and watching this one, I think there are elements of that are going to be frustrating, but you'll take this one
28:39every single time considering how things started for Seattle, especially with the quarterback stuff.
28:43All right. That is all we've got. Game one is in the books.
