Shepard is the primary target focus in Tampa Bay's offense; the team is making a concerted effort to center things around him with consistent target volume. Despite efficiency being limited by the shallow nature of the offense and forced short-area touches, the source trusts him long-term because the Buccaneers are trying their absolute hardest to get him 10 targets every week.

NegativeDepth ChartOct 15, 2026Gang Green Nation

Shepard's depth chart standing is precarious; the source concludes that despite proving he can step in and perform with the Jets, Tim Patrick's return to health and the expected returns of Omar Cooper and Adonai Mitchell mean 'it might be some time before he is needed again.' He has been elevated twice from the practice squad and is eligible for one more elevation before requiring a 53-man roster spot.

NegativeInjuryOct 15, 2026Gang Green Nation

Shepard's career has been significantly impacted by major injuries: Achilles tear in 2021, ACL tear in 2022, turf toe in 2020, plus recurring issues with hamstring, quad, calf, ankle, neck, multiple concussions in 2019, and groin issues during college. This extensive injury history raises durability concerns despite his demonstrated toughness and Ed Block Courage Award recognition.

PositiveRoleOct 15, 2026Gang Green Nation

Shepard is a slot receiver in a possession role with the Jets; he demonstrated scheme fit by playing primarily in the slot during Lions and Bears games, filling in for Omar Cooper. The source notes he is adept at finding soft spots in zones and reading coverages pre-snap and based on defender positioning, though his focus can be inconsistent (10 pre-snap penalties in career, including seven false starts).

PositiveProjectionOct 15, 2026Gang Green Nation

Shepard lacks ideal size at 5'10" and 194 pounds but has big hands and is strong, posting 20 bench press reps at the scouting combine. He posted an impressive 41-inch vertical at the combine, though his 4.48 40-yard dash was about average for his size and those measurements are over a decade old.

NegativeInjuryOct 15, 2026Gang Green Nation

Shepard's career was significantly impacted by an Achilles injury in December 2021 that ended his season after a productive start, and an ACL tear in week three of 2022. He returned in 2023 but struggled to crack the rotation with just 10 catches for 57 yards, though he has since demonstrated ability to contribute in limited roles.

NegativeUsageOct 15, 2026Gang Green Nation

Shepard showcases tenacity when running routes, carrying the ball, and making catches in traffic; is good at fighting off press coverage. However, he can take things too far at times with six offensive pass interference penalties in his career, in addition to four for unsportsmanlike conduct or unnecessary roughness, and 10 pre-snap penalties including seven false starts.

NegativeUsageOct 15, 2026Gang Green Nation

Shepard racked up 27 touchdowns in four years at the collegiate level but has been less of a red zone threat at the NFL level. He had eight touchdowns as a rookie and 26 in his career total, but hasn't had more than one in a season since 2020; of those 26 scores, 18 came from inside the red zone with eight inside the three-yard line, though only one of those eight was after 2020.

Shepard has been a solid option on screen passes throughout his career, averaging nine yards per screen pass while in Tampa Bay. He doesn't break a ton of tackles but has the ability to turn upfield and dive for the marker or pylon, and can turn a short pass into a big play with his speed.

PositiveUsageOct 15, 2026Gang Green Nation

Shepard has a reputation as a possession receiver but has made plenty of downfield plays over the years; led the Big 12 in yards per catch in 2014. While not as effective as a deep threat in recent years compared to early in his career, he has still made occasional downfield plays and can produce on the outside despite primary slot usage.

Shepard is regarded as a sure-handed receiver with a 67% career catch rate; dropped 20 passes in his first three seasons but improved dramatically since, never exceeding five drops in any season and posting just one drop on 53 targets last year. He has a good ability to adjust to the ball and make tough catches in traffic, go up to get it in fade situations, and stay inbounds on sideline catches.
