Alec Ingold

NegativeRole44:09

Fullback Alec Ingold, whom Mina Kimes placed on her all-pro list, has been 'horrible' in execution this season; despite Kimes' regard for his talent, his blocking performance in the Chargers' run game has been a significant liability.

Insight page
NegativeRole44:24

Mina Kimes criticized the Chargers' fullback group, noting that the fullbacks have been awful and horrendous. She specifically called out Alec Ingold as part of the execution flaws plaguing the Chargers' run game, where every play features somebody different making a mistake.

Insight page

Blake Corum

PositiveRole7:30

Corum shared the Rams backfield with Kyren Williams on 24 combined carries at 6.8 yards per carry. Mina Kimes repeatedly noted that Corum looks significantly more effective than Williams and questioned why Sean McVay continues to favor Williams as the primary ball carrier despite Corum's superior performance and Williams' fumble issues.

Insight page

Bo Nix

NegativeProjection38:03

Mina Kimes provides a nuanced assessment of Bo Nix's Week 2 performance and offensive ceiling. She notes Nix will never match Jared Goff's high percentage of between-the-numbers throws, but Week 2 vs Jacksonville showed progress: 12 of 13 completions for 66 yards between the hashes. Kimes' core critique is that Nix has sufficient arm talent to rip intermediate throws but remains too cautious and quick to check down, avoiding the middle of the field despite having the arm strength. She frames the Jacksonville game as a turning point where Nix finally deployed velocity in the intermediate zone with Waddle, suggesting this is the key to unlocking a 'super bowl caliber passing attack.' Her stance: Nix's ceiling depends on consistent willingness to attack the middle, not arm talent.

Insight page

Cody White

PositiveRole47:43

Cody White is exploiting the Chargers' defensive weakness in tight window throws; the Chargers have the second-highest tight window throw rate in the league (only Bills higher), and White is dunking on defenders for touchdowns because the secondary is late and not big enough to break up passes.

Insight page

Darnell Mooney

PositiveUsage25:00

Connected with James Winston on a huge play in Week 2; highlighted as a key target option for Winston going forward, particularly in single-high coverage situations where the offense needs to create explosive plays.

Insight page
NegativeRole25:20

Darnell Mooney is positioned as a key target for Jameis Winston in the Rams passing game, particularly on one-on-one and single-high coverage situations where the offense needs to create explosive plays. However, his upside is contingent on Malik Neighbors' availability; if Neighbors is unavailable, defenses can load the box and dare Winston to beat them with accurate throws to Mooney and Malachi Fields.

Insight page

Davante Adams

PositiveUsage3:00

Adams dominated the Giants secondary with 10 targets, 8 catches for 195 yards and a touchdown, showcasing elite route-running, contested catch ability, and body control. Mina Kimes noted his automatic performance on fades, back-shoulder routes, and a remarkable catch where he extended fully to pluck a Stafford bullet at the rim after the quarterback initially missed him. Against rookie cornerback Colton Hood at the goal line with no safety help, Adams' technical mastery and hand placement remain elite despite reduced athleticism at this stage of his career.

Insight page

Devin Singletary

NegativeUsage15:00

Singletary is part of the Giants' running back rotation alongside Cam Sands and Najee Harris. Mina Kimes noted that the team is still figuring out the touch distribution and doesn't yet know who they want to be the primary back, with the situation complicated by Jackson Dart's injury.

Insight page

Isaiah Likely

NegativeRole15:00

Likely had 8 catches on 8 targets in Week 1 against Dallas' weak linebacker group, but in Week 2 against the Rams, his limitations became apparent. Mina Kimes characterized him as an 'incomplete player' without three-down impact; he was forced into short-yardage and goal-line situations where he doesn't belong (pinning Aaron Donald on a goal-line play), creating tendency problems for the Giants offense. Unlike Terrence Ferguson, who blocks and catches to enable diverse offensive schemes, Likely's narrow skill set limits the Giants' offensive flexibility.

Insight page

Jacoby Brissett

PositiveMatchup45:30

Jacoby Brissett and the Raiders offense torched the Chargers' defense in week 2; Mina Kimes credits offensive coordinator Clint Kubiak with a great game plan that found ways to get the most out of skill players, including getting Trey Tucker opportunities downfield.

Insight page

Jameis Winston

NegativeProjection12:00

Winston was thrust into a Monday Night Football start in Week 2 as a backup and looked completely unprepared. Against the Rams' blitz, he went 1-for-10 for 15 yards and an interception on 13 snaps with five-plus rushers (10 pressures). Mina Kimes noted that while backup quarterbacks often look good in their first start, Winston's performance was particularly poor, and the Giants' offense is not built to play from behind, which forced them away from their preferred two-back sets and run-heavy approach.

Insight page
NegativeMatchup20:07

The Rams were unafraid to blitz James Winston in Week 2, sending multiple blitzes because they had little concern for his ability to handle aggressive coverage. Mina Kimes notes the Giants appeared unprepared for this defensive approach, suggesting Winston's limitations as a passer influenced the Rams' defensive game plan.

Insight page
PositiveProjection24:00

Mina Kimes believes Winston will deliver a better version of his performance than what was shown in Week 2 against the Rams. The upcoming schedule (Titans, Cardinals, Commanders, Saints, Ducks, Eagles) features teams with weak run games, which should allow the Giants' pass rush to operate more effectively and create more explosive plays for Winston to connect on downfield.

Insight page
NegativeProjection25:17

Jameis Winston's ability to run the ball is limited compared to other quarterbacks, which constrains the Rams' offensive flexibility. When defenses load the box to stop the run game—which they can do if Malik Neighbors is unavailable—Winston must make accurate throws to Darnell Mooney and Malachi Fields without turning the ball over. This is a historically difficult ask for Winston, as defenses have consistently won this bet against him throughout his career, even during his better seasons.

Insight page

Jaylen Waddle

PositiveMatchup22:12

Mina Kimes expects Jalen Waddle to see significant slot usage in an upcoming matchup (likely Week 3), and notes that if the Rams can get L'Jarius Sneed on Waddle in the slot, it would be a key defensive advantage. This suggests Waddle's slot role is a focal point of the offensive game plan.

Insight page
PositiveRole38:03

Mina Kimes highlights Waddle's emerging role in the Broncos' intermediate passing attack after Week 2 vs Jacksonville. Bo Nix completed 12 of 13 passes for 66 yards between the numbers in this game—a significant development after Week 1 showed minimal middle-field usage. Kimes emphasizes that Waddle was brought in specifically to coax intermediate throws from Nix, citing an anticipatory dig route on third down where the ball was out between the hashes before Waddle broke, plus a post-crosser completion. Kimes argues this middle-field presence, though not the primary attack, is critical to respecting the offense's geometry; without it, defenses can stack the perimeter. She concludes: 'If you can do this with Jalen Waddle, you become a super bowl caliber passing attack immediately.'

Insight page

Justin Herbert

NegativeRole43:46

Mina Kimes expressed regret about not questioning the fit between Justin Herbert and Mike McDaniel's offensive system in the offseason. She noted that Herbert is uncomfortable in the Chargers' pocket structure, doesn't want to throw timing routes blind as McDaniel's scheme requires, and takes too many hits. The combination of a poor pocket shape, uncomfortable quarterback, and timing-route demands creates an unmitigated disaster on every play.

Insight page
NegativeRole43:58

Herbert's performance is hampered by systemic offensive line and run game execution failures; Mina Kimes emphasizes the marriage between quarterback and play caller is broken, with execution flaws on every play involving different personnel—fullback Alec Ingold described as 'horrible' despite being on Kimes' all-pro list, center Cole Strange a 'complete liability in pass protection' and providing no run-game value, and left guard Trey Pipkins dealing with knee injury that may force Trevor Penning into the starting role.

Insight page

Kirk Cousins

PositiveMatchup45:12

Kirk Cousins exploited the Chargers' zone coverage vulnerabilities in week 2; Mina Kimes notes that Cousins has a history of throwing into open windows against zone coverage (citing his Tampa Bay experience), and the Chargers' previously strong zone windows are 'just open for business right now,' allowing him to attack the defense effectively.

Insight page
PositiveProjection48:02

Kirk Cousins played really, really well in Week 2 against the Chargers despite early-season skepticism; Mina Kimes credits him with smart play-calling execution alongside Clint Kubiak's offensive scheme.

Insight page

Kyren Williams

PositiveUsage7:30

Williams and Blake Corum combined for 24 carries at 6.8 yards per carry, running the ball effectively against the Giants' weak run defense. However, Williams fumbled twice in the game (recovering one himself), continuing a pattern of ball security issues that has plagued him. Mina Kimes expressed frustration that Sean McVay continues to deploy Williams as the primary ball carrier despite his historic fumble problems, while Corum consistently looks more effective.

Insight page
PositiveUsage25:17

Kyren Williams' impact on the Rams running game is substantial. The speaker notes that Williams 'really does impact the numbers a lot' and wants to see how the running game performs without him. In Week 1 against the Cowboys, Williams generated four yards before contact per carry, a metric that typically indicates either a dominant offensive line or a defense on its heels. This efficiency suggests Williams is a key driver of the Rams' ground attack.

Insight page

Malik Nabers

NegativeInjury17:00

Nabers got hurt during the game and fought through it to return, but was out for a significant portion of the contest. Mina Kimes noted that the Giants' receiving group is still limited and that Nabers 'still doesn't look quite like Malik Nabers yet,' suggesting he has not yet reached his expected performance level.

Insight page

Matthew Stafford

PositiveProjection9:00

Stafford threw for 300 yards while being pressured on just 15% of dropbacks (2-for-4 for 25 yards on pressured plays), benefiting from the Rams' dominant run game and clean pocket. Mina Kimes' thesis is that Stafford remains one of the best quarterbacks in football as long as he stays clean; however, his efficiency drops significantly when facing teams that can pressure him, as will be tested against Denver next week. She also noted his tendency to force unnecessary throws late in the first half, suggesting he needs to trust the running game more.

Insight page

Najee Harris

NegativeUsage15:00

Harris is part of the Giants' running back rotation alongside Cam Sands and Devin Singletary. Mina Kimes noted that the team is still figuring out the touch distribution and doesn't yet know who they want to be the primary back, with the situation complicated by Jackson Dart's injury.

Insight page

Patrick Ricard

NegativeUsage15:00

Ricard had only 16 snaps in Week 2 as the Giants were forced to abandon their preferred two-back sets and run-heavy approach after Jackson Dart's injury forced Jameis Winston into the game. Mina Kimes noted that the Giants' offense is built to play from ahead and lean on play-action passing, making them ill-equipped to operate from behind. Ricard is a 'needle-moving guy' who puts defenses in a bind with heavy personnel, but the Giants' offensive limitations and multiple coaching voices (Nagy, Callahan, Roman, Harbaugh) create an incomplete skill-position group.

Insight page

Puka Nacua

NegativeRole5:30

Nakua was not available for the Week 2 game against the Giants, forcing the Rams to lean more on 13 personnel and increase targets to Terrence Ferguson. Mina Kimes noted that while Nakua will return, he and DeVante Adams are likely to miss more games at some point this season, making Ferguson's development as a third option critical for the Rams' offensive depth.

Insight page

Quentin Johnston

NegativeUsage41:33

Johnston went 1-for-5 on targets for 7 yards in Week 2 against the Rams; Mina Kimes detailed all five targets: first was a tip pass, second a perfect hole shot he didn't catch, third he tripped, fourth a four-yard screen in legal formation, fifth Herbert missed him. Kimes characterized this as encapsulating the Chargers' broken passing attack.

Insight page

Terrance Ferguson

NegativeRole5:30

Ferguson received 9 targets (second-most on the Rams) with 6 catches for 54 yards and a touchdown, but struggled with drops and contested catch technique. Mina Kimes noted the Rams were intentionally developing Ferguson as the wide receiver three in the offense, committing to high-volume opportunities despite his inconsistencies. His usage shifted dramatically from year one (96 air yards per target as a vertical threat) to year two (short routes, flats, arrows, outs as a safety valve), requiring him to develop softer hands and catch-away-from-frame reliability when Devante Adams or Puka Nakua miss time.

Insight page

Tre Tucker

PositiveUsage45:45

Trey Tucker received downfield opportunities from the Raiders offense in week 2 against the Chargers; Mina Kimes credits offensive coordinator Clint Kubiak with finding ways to get the most out of skill players, including Tucker.

Insight page
NegativeRole47:27

Trey Tucker is still running downfield between the safeties in the Chargers' defensive scheme, exploiting the secondary's inability to stay sharp on tendencies and tight windows.

Insight page

Tyson Bagent

PositiveProjection58:51

Tyson Bagent was characterized as better than previous Bears backup options and capable of putting up a fight in the upcoming Bears-Eagles Monday night game, suggesting he can provide competitive play despite being a backup quarterback.

Insight page

Woody Marks

NegativeUsage28:22

Marks was stuffed on 50% of his runs in Week 2 against the Bengals; Houston's running backs combined for 14 carries for 18 yards (1.3 yards per carry) with only one successful run, indicating severe offensive line and run game struggles.

0:26Welcome back to the Minicom Show featuring Lenny. Week two reactions, Monday night football.
0:30Winners and losers. Ben Solek, always a winner in my book, is here to discuss what was kind of a disappointing Giants Rams game.
0:37We're gonna pick some winners and losers. Bengals might make an appearance.
0:41Broncos just sit tight for the second half of this podcast.
0:44But we're gonna start with last night's game. Disappointing, of course, because it's a win.
0:48Because Giants quarterback Jackson Dart got hurt on the very first drive of the game.
0:52We're gonna talk about that and what it means in the next few games as we all wait for the injury news
0:59and the seriousness of it to come in. But I figure we should start off by talking about the Rams, who, of
1:05course, won the game and looked a lot better than they did week one against San Francisco.
1:10Afterwards, Sean McVay blamed himself, fell on his sword a little bit for the travel plans.
1:14So I want to start with the Rams offense because the Rams defense is like at one point in the broadcast.
1:20Aikman, who, by the way, my kink is I love Aikman on bad games.
1:24A hundred percent. It's the exact same thing. Whenever there's a big injury on Monday night football, I'm like, oh, no, so disappointing.
1:31Primetime game. And then the little voice man says, wait a minute.
1:34Troy Aikman has to watch this game now for the next 45 minutes.
1:38Or just bad quarterbacking. There's no person. I think there's no announcement.
1:41I mean, Aikman's obviously amazing and Bucks really good, too.
1:44I know we're company people, whatever. But I love his palpable disgust when he watches bad quarterbacking.
1:49And he's honest, too, which I also like. He doesn't try to spin it.
1:53Although he did make one comment that made me laugh.
1:56When he was talking about the Rams defense struggling week one.
1:59And he was like, seems like they figured something out against New York.
2:03And I was like, yeah, they figured out that it's Jameis Winston on the opposing team.
2:07There was a lot of there was a lot of good like, oh, you know, darts down.
2:12But the Giants have invested in QB, too. Like Jameis is out there and like Jameis will be fine.
2:18It's like, listen, firstly, there's no such thing as a good QB, too.
2:21And secondly, the QB, too is always good in his first start.
2:25It's never when you get dropped into a Monday Night Football game in week two in a new offense that you're like ripping it down the field.
2:32He's no Drew Locke. Dude, Drew. OK, so I watched the Drew film two hours ago.
2:37Are we going to do Drew Locke like reclaimed quarterback this offseason?
2:40It feels like we're going to do it. He looks good.
2:43Well, he also just he plays. He plays like he's playing with house money, which is what Jameis, you know, hypothetically plays like he's just younger.
2:51The CX offensive line was very good. We're not getting to that.
2:54OK, back to the Rams. Sorry. Tangent. Don't get out there.
2:57Well, honestly, there's gonna be a lot of backup quarterbacks playing in week three and different levels of acumen from them.
3:03And we did see some of them in this week, of course, with both Caleb Williams and Jane Daniels getting hurt.
3:09So the Rams offense did have Pukunikua in this game.
3:12And it obviously didn't matter because they put up 28 points.
3:15But some interesting things I thought. So one of which was we just got.
3:19What's the word other than vintage to use? Classic.
3:22Yeah. Yeah. I mean, this was just Devante Adams just reminding us why he is one of the best to do it.
3:2810 targets, eight catches for 195 yards. Ben, it just felt like everything.
3:32First of all, the Giants did have a very injured secondary in this game.
3:36Not that. I mean, but I wasn't watching Devante Adams and thinking, you know, Dion Banks would really stop that corner out.
3:42But he was just automatic. The fades, the back shoulders, the touchdown, the corner.
3:46I mean, it just felt like there was the one insane catch he made where Stafford actually missed him, but he reached
3:52back and plucked it at the last second. That was sick.
3:55He's just absurd. He's just so good. Yeah. And on that one, Stafford's like trying to no look at.
4:01And then Stafford goes to look at late because I think he sees out of the corner of his eye that Devante
4:07is kind of moving the route a little bit different than where Stafford expected.
4:11And so Stafford just ends up right throwing a bullet, not in the correct spot.
4:15And then Devante catch technique on top of the rim.
4:18Full extension is crazy. The goal line touchdown against the rookie Colton Hood, who is not even supposed to be starting.
4:24I know. You're a second round pick being forced into isolation.
4:27No safety up with the goal line against Devante Adams.
4:30And all corners are confident, guys. You know Colton's just standing there being like, not like this.
4:35Please, no. Not this guy. I had the wonderful experience of explaining to my wife, who is not a football watcher, didn't
4:41grab watching football at all, who Devante Adams was.
4:44That guy right there was the GOAT receiver in 2019-2020.
4:47It's 2026. And even back then, he was not the fastest guy.
4:50On the stick and nod where he, you know, the big, big second down towering throw down the field, Devante catches it.
4:56And then you're like, all right, touchdown. And he just gets immediately hawked out like the 15.
5:01I was like, for him to be, just forgive me, that slow, that not fast, and still be able to produce like
5:08this is such a testament to how technically gifted that individual player is.
5:11Skilled sliders up to 100, even if the athleticism sliders may be down to like, you know, 1520 at this point.
5:17Yeah. Teach tape, all the little things he does, top of his routes, the hand, late hands, the contested catch ability, the tracking, all of it.
5:25He's unbelievable. Body control. The other thing I thought was notable in the passing game was they really wanted to make Terrence Ferguson happen in this game.
5:32Yes. And so he had the second most targets, nine.
5:35He caught six for 54 yards and a touchdown.
5:38He had, he had some drops and this was expected, right?
5:41Because no Pukunikua, you know, they're going to lean a bit more on 13 personnel, but even outside of that, Terrence Ferguson
5:47has to be the wide receiver three in this offense.
5:50And look, Nukua is going to come back, but realistically, Nukua slash Devontae are probably going to miss more games at some point this season.
5:57So I do, it did feel a little bit like the Rams, like committing to getting Ferguson, his opportunities in this game,
6:03almost to set up the rest, you know, this season is about developing him as a third option.
6:08And I posted during the game, the targets to Ferguson will continue until morale improves.
6:13And I mean, that was right. He had the drops and they come back the very next drive and they release him
6:19through the line of scrimmage to get him a design touch where it's like, we're going to come back to the well, like you're going to have drops.
6:27You're going to have bad moments. We need you to be able to be reliable.
6:31Also, like, like they talked a lot in year two of Ferguson in the off season about he's learning all the roles in the offense.
6:38He's learning X, he's learning Z, he's learning everything.
6:41His usage in this game as, you know, five yards speed out safety valve against, you know, quarters is so dramatically different than last year where it was.
6:49Terrence Ferguson has an air yards per target of 96, right?
6:52Like everything was like, he's a vertical tight end, you know?
6:55So in year one, it was, wow, we think we have this like field stretching player at tight end.
7:01This is cool. This is nifty in year two.
7:03It's okay. If we need you to, can you become a like Tyler Higbee route guy for us?
7:08We're just running flats and just arrows and outs and we can dump the ball.
7:13You can create the yards after the catch and you can catch it reliably.
7:17Now, even on his six catches a night, he was fighting the football, right?
7:21I mean, and this was a problem even last year too, where his contested catch rate, his catch away from frame rate needs to get better.
7:28If they're going to use him as a high volume guy when the courier Devante goes down.
7:33So good to see them pilot it. Guys got to get softer hands.
7:36It's been an issue for him. So part of the Rams offensive success in this game, a big part of it.
7:42Well, okay. There's kind of two sides of it had to do with the giants, like a pass rush, which I want
7:49to get to, but the giants like a pass rush had a lot to do with the Rams run football down their throat.
7:55So in the football, I love it. So Blake Corham and Kyron Williams, 24 carries at 6.8 yards per carry.
8:01And they were running. Is that good? It's 6.8 solid.
8:04Well, they ran the ball really well in week one.
8:07Stafford was just to shelve himself in that game.
8:09But, you know, the giants, so all off season, I think my question with the giants was last year, you had this
8:15great pass rush, but you never really got third downs because you can stop the run.
8:20Can you stop the run better? Week one looks really good.
8:23This, you know, like they, this was a real run game.
8:26One of the best run games in the NFL, honestly, top three, and they just couldn't do it.
8:31And I will say though, beyond that, and I think, again, I think the run game had a lot to do with
8:38that because they did get Stafford into some third downs, but even on those third downs, it just felt like outside of
8:44that one great sack where Abdul Carter splits the double team, this giant's pass rush was not getting it done at all in this game.
8:51Matthew Stafford was pressured on just 15% of drop backs.
8:54He went two for four for 25 yards in those pressures, but didn't matter because he was kept clean and he threw for 300, kept clean.
9:01The giants four man rush in this game had a 9% pressure rate.
9:05If you just give me that stat, you're going to, I know, I know the Rams won, right?
9:10Like any Rams game. It's almost like, you know, you like there's stats where you can like, okay, if the bills have a success rate, run the football.
9:18If Matthew Stafford is facing a team where he's pressured under 30% of the time, the Rams have won the football game.
9:24And it was dismal, honestly. In this game. You gotta, you gotta earn your pass rush snaps.
9:29It's been, it's a truism of coaching since 1940, whatever, right?
9:32Where it's like, you, you don't get to just run out in NASCAR and first and 10, every single play, because you
9:39will just give up upfield rushing lanes and just teams like the Rams will just lean on you five yard chunk you
9:45and just walk you down the field. It's exactly what happened.
9:48Right. And it's been the concern with, okay. Like I know even in 2025 with Dexter Lawrence there, they were still bad run defense.
9:55I think that a lot to do with the linebackers.
9:58And I think Dexter was not necessarily healthy. But if you're going to go this light at the edge rusher position, Brian
10:04Burns, Michael Carter came on Thibodeau and also prioritize penetration on the interior defensive line.
10:08Okay. You know, Darius Alexander, Chauncey Golston, you're going to take on water.
10:12Now they tried, right? They added DJ Reed and they added Shelby Harris.
10:16You added two defensive tackles over 30, whose numbers have been going down for years.
10:20You added the names, but the impact's not there.
10:22And just any team that can functionally run the ball between the tackles with big, thick, strong double teams is going to do this to the Giants.
10:30And so they proved otherwise that they can stop them.
10:33And, and I do not see the personnel. I do not see the, the schematic buttons to press that you're going to
10:39be able to, to get away with fielding a core, a defensive tackle and linebacker, a defensive tackle and edge room, excuse me.
10:46That is this light. That is this easy to move off the ball.
10:50I mean, and the Rams are the pinnacle of duo teams.
10:53So maybe it's not as dire as it seems to me, but I mean, even though, the Cowboys just got so much movement on the interior.
11:00I don't know. It freaks me out. Yeah. The only thing stopping the Rams run game is the Rams running back.
11:06I'm like, I tell you, man, I, Kyron, he's lost so many fumbles and Blake Corham looks so good.
11:11And every single game, Tyron's back out. There's a primary ball carrier.
11:15I don't know. I need Sean. Fumble two in this game.
11:18He just recovered it. He bounced it himself. So I agree, but I was like, God guys, I get it.
11:24He's the one who's historic fumble numbers. I know he does.
11:27And I just, I just, Sean loves him so much.
11:30And I just, I want to understand that relationship, man.
11:33He's a good receiver. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So let's just kind of, I think the concerns about the Giants defense are noted
11:39in the fronts and it feels like there's a through line between the Giants defense and the offense, which is, I don't
11:45want to call them front runners, but these are, I think both sides of the football are built to play from ahead and not from behind.
11:52And you really saw that in this game. We'll get to the offense in a second, but you know what I mean?
11:59Like that Giants defense, I feel good about with the lead feel less good about when you're certainly when you're playing from
12:05behind, but especially if you're going to play against a dominant rushing team like LA.
12:09Fortunately, those in their division. So that helps. One more note on the Rams offense before we keep it moving.
12:15So we talked about the importance of Ferguson. We talked about the run game after the offensive line looked dominant in this one as well.
12:22Um, we feel good about Matthew Stafford, like, you know, after the bounce back after last week.
12:27I mean, my general thesis on Matthew Stafford is as long as he's kept clean, he is still one of the best quarterbacks in football.
12:34If he faces a team and they've got the Broncos next week, who can actually pressure him, then I think it gets
12:40a little bit more interesting, which is honestly what it was last year as well.
12:45Yeah. And, and like the, the end of first half pick, it's one of the ones where it's like, you have to
12:51allow this to like two times a game, three times a game.
12:54Matthew's attempts to throw where you're like, dude, don't do that.
12:57It just is not, you don't got it. This is like an unbelievably efficient running game.
13:02We're good after the catch. Like, how about you just chill out?
13:05Uh, and so, yeah, it is a, how much can keep him upright over the course of the year?
13:11How much can keep him unpressured? How healthy is he going to be?
13:14I don't know. Week one is always weird. Week one in Australia, you know, down under feels just like unbelievably, you know, topsy turvy, something to throw away.
13:22Rams often or probably giants offense. Um, and we'll, we'll do the dart injury and what's next at the end of this.
13:29Let's talk just about this game and the offense and the Rams defense and Aaron Donald, um, who I haven't even, I
13:35have not said Aaron Donald's name since we started this podcast, which is bad podcasting for him.
13:40Uh, so yeah, Jamis looked just completely unready. It was the accidentally came important at my job meme come to life.
13:46Uh, Chris Shula very quickly realized that, uh, he had no answers for the blitz and cranked it up.
13:51Yeah. And Jamis went one for 10 for 15 yards and an interception when blitzed in this game.
13:56They had 13 snaps with five plus rushers and 10 pressures.
13:59Whoa. That's not good. Not good. Um, you know, going into this game, Ben, I, when, when it was going to be
14:06Jackson Dart, the thought was, my thought was okay.
14:08I'm sure they're going to lean into their two back sets again.
14:12They're going to try to do what San Francisco did.
14:15They're going to try to run the ball, but they had to go away from that quickly.
14:19Patrick card ended up only having 16 snaps in this game.
14:23Cause again, this offense is not really built to play from behind.
14:26I think that's kind of my, even it would be better with dart, no doubt.
14:30And they would have been more competitive, but I'm just saying.
14:33This is still a pretty limited receiving group. And I feel like neighbors still doesn't look quite like Malik neighbors yet.
14:39So it was out for a significant portion of that game too.
14:43Yeah. Right. He got hurt. He fought through it to come back in, but yeah, it's Andrew Thomas got hurt too in this game.
14:50Um, it just, you, I think in this, you really saw the limitation.
14:53Yeah. Again, major caveat, James, all of that, but you saw that this is a team that's definitely more equipped to run
15:00the football and also lean on the play action passing attack.
15:03Isaiah likely eight catches on eight targets in week one against the Cowboys team.
15:07That's light and that their linebackers are a mess.
15:09And it's like, man, this is awesome. This is the best.
15:12I can't believe we got this guy week two.
15:15He's got a pin Aaron Donald down on a short yardage play in the goal line.
15:19And it's like, Oh, wait, wait a minute. Right.
15:22And, and not a good idea though. Like that one, I'm watching it.
15:26Like what are we? Yeah. It's like, should he be out there?
15:29Probably not. But the issue is that when you become a, when Patrick or Card and Theo Johnson are out here, we do X.
15:36And when Isaiah likely that here, we do Y team.
15:39Then you start running into tendency problems. Right. And so it's just a reminder, like in the case of a player, like
15:45Isaiah likely to me, is it exciting player and interesting player, but he is an incomplete player.
15:50Right. He is not a player who is in totality.
15:53Right. Patrick or Card is a great needle moving guy.
15:56Right. You know, puts, puts defense in a bind for you to put heavy personnel on the field, but this is an incomplete player.
16:02Right. This is not a player who's got kind of the sort of, the sort of three down impact that makes it a complete, a holistic team.
16:10The way like on the other side of the ball, Terrence Ferguson blocks and catches, and that allows the Rams to do so with Terrence Ferguson.
16:18You don't get to do otherwise. And so right.
16:20Running back rotation. I think like they, you know, we want it to be all cam scadaboo all the time.
16:26You're seeing Najee Harris. You're seeing Devin Singletary. I don't think they know who they want to be out there.
16:32We're just yet. They're still figuring out how the running back touches work, which also is conflated by no Jackson dart.
16:37Like it is a very much an offensive work in progress with multiple different offensive minds, Matt Nagy, Brian Callahan, Greg Roman,
16:44John Harbaugh, and then like a deep room of not perfect skill position players.
16:48The Giants are going to be very herky jerky on offense.
16:51They try to figure out what their actual identity is when they actually have a healthy quarterback, let alone in a context like this.
16:58Herky jerk is a good way to describe it.
17:00Cause I think when you saw the high highs last week, you saw that like all of these players that you mentioned
17:07are not without talent and some of them have, I think pretty cool upside, but it's going to, like you said, really
17:13very, I think based less more so like a week to week randomness and more on opponent and Dallas, it turned out.
17:19This is a great thing that week too. You learn a little bit about week one and what means what?
17:25And again, I know would've been different with dart.
17:27Although I will say he was under a lot of pressure on that first drive as well.
17:32Uh, including of course the one where he got hurt.
17:35Um, all right, Aaron Donald let's talk about it.
17:38Uh, so he played a lot. I, that was dude, dude.
17:41He played 35 snaps, 32 snaps. Excuse me. And only, only four in the fourth quarter.
17:45Cause they didn't even need to, you could have played 40 in a competitive game.
17:50It's first game after two and a half years.
17:52I was stunned. Um, this was one where on first watch through three quarters, I was like, ah, he looks spry, but
17:58he's not really, you know, he's not filling up the stat sheet outside of the one busted play you talked about where
18:05he, where he gets likely and blows up the run, the short yardage run.
18:09Um, I thought like I was watching and I was thinking, okay, he's winning quickly.
18:13I, he looked quick to me, but, um, you know, just not the level of dominance we're accustomed to, but I think
18:19the fact that he looked so quick, he was winning on the line scrimmage really quickly.
18:24Probably speaks to a level of readiness that should be scary because it's only going to get better and better from here.
18:300.75 second get off, which is a, how quickly you cross the line of scrimmage from the defensive line spot by next gen stats.
18:37It's the third fastest game for a defensive tackle so far this season.
18:40Right. So we're anything under 0.8 is like super, super fast defensive lineman.
18:44Yeah. Now that is what you can train in two and a half years away from the NFL, right?
18:50You can do your squats and you can do your plyometrics and you can do your jumps and you can keep the
18:56twitch and you can keep the explosiveness. What you can't really train is going up against a guard and that guy's trying to stop.
19:03You can get into a quarterback. And yeah, Donald was not.
19:06If you dropped this Donald game in the middle of a regular Donald season, I'd be like, what's wrong with Aaron?
19:12And he can't get off of blocks. He's not actually affecting the quarterback.
19:16He only had one pressure and it was in the fourth quarter, right?
19:19When they were like full all out, you know, pressure and going after it.
19:23And then it was a 22 point game at that point.
19:26So if you drop this game in a regular Donald context, I would say, oh no, in the context of he hasn't
19:33played for two and a half years. I just think there's, there's rust to grind off in terms of actual like hand
19:39fighting and separation and being slippery and finishing at the quarterback.
19:42If we're still looking like this in six weeks, I'll start to wonder.
19:46I'm not gonna, you know, the, the physical toolkit is very much still there.
19:50I just think it's better getting back into the flow of things.
19:53And I think we'll see that over time. When did Henry Thomas go out in this game or the very end?
19:59That's what I thought. Yeah. Fourth quarter. Um, yeah, I think, you know, the, the Rams put up really good pass rush win numbers in this game.
20:07And, but, um, some of that had to do with Donald winning quickly.
20:10Some of that had to do with the number of blitzes that they were sending because they were so unafraid of James Winston at a certain point.
20:18Um, and it just felt like the giants were not prepared for that.
20:22I mean, I, you know, it's again, giant, you as your starting quarterback in the first course, you're not prepared for this
20:28defense that looked like a very soft split safety, heavy zone defense in week one to just go.
20:33Yeah. Right. But again, I'm not like watching that and thinking like, wow, the Rams are going to play so much man coverage this year.
20:40They're going to blitz. This was a very unprepared, like an, you know, this was a unique situation with the quarterback.
20:46I do think also like next week you get, well, I don't want to like look ahead too much because obviously we'll
20:53cover that game in depth, but you're not playing man coverage like that against Denver, against the quarterback who's very good against it.
20:59Uh, in Roanoke. So yeah. We'll get to that matchup.
21:02Um, all right, let's talk about Jackson. I'm sorry.
21:05The only thing I would say is that that was interesting to me from like the increase in man coverage and the
21:11DB usage is that they've been able to play so much dime, but they also got McDuffie in the slot more than they got him in week one.
21:19They never had him in the slot. And then week two, I'm trying to find the official numbers.
21:24I checked in the second half. He'd already had like six snaps in the slot, but they actually were able to experiment
21:30with McDuffie in the nickel in this game, which I think is very, very, very, very, very important to this team that
21:36they have a McDuffie outside mode and they have a McDuffie nickel mode because you saw what the Niners did to quit
21:43in Lake in round one and game one and week one, excuse me.
21:46In week one. Yeah. If you, if you build those two modes, then you can on the sideline at the end of
21:53the first couple of drives, like, all right, they're going after the slot.
21:56We're entering McDuffie slot mode and you can feel comfortable with Emmanuel Forbes and Josh Wallace and players like that on the field.
22:03And so it is important. I think that we continue to see what that looks like.
22:08Well, that's definitely going to matter next week because I expect to see a decent amount of Jalen Waddle in the slot.
22:14And if you want McDuffie on Waddle, I think as much as possible again, sorry, that game is just like the best game by far next week.
22:21So I can't wait to talk about it. No Jack's Pat.
22:25That's on my, uh, you know, I have some games I covered more depth.
22:29Of course, from doing the show. Yeah. That that's on my both sides.
22:32Both. We're going to talk about both sides of the issue.
22:35Yeah. Uh, okay. Jackson dart. Let's get to it.
22:38So still no news at the moment. It is a nine 55 AM Pacific, perhaps most likely by the time you hear this, it'll be out.
22:45Uh, MCL. So first that's good news, right? Because the moment that looks, Ooh, buddy, he got folded and, and he, it
22:52was, um, his non plant, his left leg got hit as he was getting hit from the right side.
22:57I think it was Josiah Stewart and Byron Young who sandwiched him or, but it looks really vicious and he was immediately in pain.
23:04And then, um, I was texting with Laura during the game.
23:07You know, there, there, this is, she reported this.
23:10He was trying to get back in. The, uh, staff was saying, um, he's not dead.
23:14It, it, it, it, not, it'll be okay, but it's maybe there was some encouraging signs during the game.
23:20There was a clip that went immediately viral of somebody saying four to six weeks.
23:24Yeah. They just hit the hardball. Yeah. Yeah. These, these clips that people find of like the lip reading of the injury stuff.
23:30Honestly, that's more useful information than like some Twitter doctor.
23:33And also press conferences where they're like, we have no idea and we'll know more in two days.
23:38It's like, well, we have video of him going into imaging rooms.
23:42You have some idea. So it's a sprain MCL and just looking it up that four to six week does make sense
23:48because it's usually like a three to eight week kind of timeline.
23:51So four to six is, is pretty good. Um, so he will be back at some point.
23:56Now here's the schedule. Week three Titans, Cardinals, commanders, saints are the next four.
24:00Then Ducks and Eagles. So those are all winnable games, although respect the saints stuck about them later this week.
24:06My saints. Um, I, I guess my sum total is you're probably going to get a better version of James Winston than what you saw last night.
24:14Yep. I genuinely believe that. Um, I think the onus here and then the other thing that's notable is those are not dominant run games.
24:21In fact, yeah. It's a pretty bad one. I'd say over six on run games.
24:25Yeah. All of them actually. Yes. So to our discussion earlier about the giants defense and how the Rams run game basically slowed up the pass rush.
24:33I do think there's potential over those six weeks for the defense to put up a performance closer to week one than what we saw last night.
24:40Yeah. They're three point favorites against the Titans in week three.
24:44And that's like with, you know, like certainty that darts not going to play at least that week right now.
24:49I think the Titans have been better. Like, you know, I think week two, they improved a lot.
24:54And I think that there's a chance that, you know, Brian Dable revenge game and whatever, like that one gets like interesting and fun.
25:01But the belief in the giants offensive line running game.
25:04And then, yeah. Front running pass rush nucleus is, is enough such that I think, yeah, the giants can survive this stretch.
25:10The, the, the biggest concern I have is that dart impacts the quarterback run game and accordingly the larger run game a lot.
25:17And I don't think you can do that at all with Jameis.
25:20So now you really have to be able to like when you're one-on-ones and when you get single high, you have to create explosives.
25:27You saw him connect like on a huge sort of Darnell Mooney, like Jameis where that thing out there, but you really
25:33need Malik neighbors to be the target on a lot of those.
25:37And just, is he back from injury? Is he always going to be, you know, banged up?
25:42He's had these shoulder injuries since college. He's obviously still coming off the leg injury.
25:46There's been a lot of talk about, he felt like he needed to get hit again and he wasn't certain he was ready to go for week one.
25:54And so if you are dealing with Malik neighbors in and out of the lineup, I'm just going to absolutely load the box on you.
26:01And I'm going to dare Jameis to make accurate throws to Darnell Mooney and Malachi fields without throwing picks.
26:06And that bet has just won against Jameis for much of his career, even when he's been playing well.
26:12So I can see a few wins because of the running game and because of the defense.
26:17I would really like to see the running game without dart, have a nice healthy game.
26:21I'm just, I guess dart really does impact the numbers a lot.
26:25Oh, definitely. I mean, week one, the Cowboys defense really struggled with the possibility of him running and, and they have like
26:31four yards before contact per carry, which is usually a side, if not of a dominant offensive line of a defense that's on its heels a bit.
26:39I just want to say I was smiling here because Will Levis just signed with the Jets practice squad.
26:44Big ups for Will Levis. Big time. Big time.
26:47Cross the transom. All right. Transmission. All right. We're going to take a quick break, come back and do winners and woofs.

28:05I'll go first. My winner. Bengals defense. Whew. So there's two things I want to talk about.
28:10But let's start with the run game. Yeah. The Houston offense.
28:13Yeah. The running backs had 14 carries for 18 yards.
28:16So a little less than the Rams on Monday night.
28:19Just a little. 1.3 yards. One was successful. One successful run.
28:22Dog. Six runs. Woody Marks was stuffed on 50% of his runs in this game.
28:26The Bengals play, have through two weeks, have played with a 66% light box rate, which leads the NFL.
28:31Dexter Lawrence. I would argue in run defense that this game from Dexter Lawrence was about as dominant a game I've seen
28:38from a defensive player in run defense in recent memory.
28:40It's, it's, I, I, you're just like, I wrote about it in the column.
28:44I, I, I, it is. They spent the 10th overall pick on the theory that they'd get a run defender so good
28:51that they could do anything else they wanted the other 10 positions and it would work.
28:55And it's like, all right, that's kind of a crazy bet, fellas.
28:59And in week two, it's just immediately. Nope. A hundred percent.
29:02You guys nailed it. The Evan Brown will go to sleep shaking thinking about the number 97 for weeks, dude.
29:08The Texan center who like was a guard with the Cardinals and the Texans are trying to move him to center.
29:13And like, it's a little bit of a, a shaky situation to start with.
29:17Dexter did not move an inch in this game that he did not want to move.
29:22He had no point in this game was moved against his will.
29:25I, I, I, I thought he's a fuck. A fire hydrant out there.
29:29He is an immovable object tethered to the earth.
29:32It was so sick. We should note that the Texans run rushing attack is probably just really bad again as well.
29:38That's a part of this. It does. It is, which is again, not taking away credit through, uh, two weeks now.
29:44I mean, so, cause I was looking at the Bengals schedule and I was like, are they going to go up against like a really good run game?
29:52That's going to test this hypothesis. Um, you get the, you get the, uh, Ravens obviously twice.
29:56And then you've got the chiefs, which will be interesting, but not a lot of good run games in the NFL right now.
30:03Period. Kind of quietly. I was like, so. I'm just going to like really good at getting to the boundary would interest me against the Bengals.
30:10Cause I would want to be like miles Murphy, Cassius Howell, get Barrett Carter moving, but you have to, you have to
30:17not wave the white flag entirely guard center guard.
30:19But just, if you are trying, the Texans are really trying to be a downhill power running game.
30:24And right now the teeth of the Bengals is like to Daryl Slayton, who also had a great game, by the way, in rotation, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.
30:32And like that interior Barrett Carter, the second year linebackers played so fast by Dexter Lawrence uphill.
30:37Yeah. Like it is. You gotta get outside. Also, I feel like lost in like all the Dexter Lawrence deserved love.
30:43Jonathan Allen looks like a fricking beast out there.
30:46Leading the league in defensive tackle pressures right now.
30:48He is so disruptive as part of that pass rush.
30:51So yeah, the defensive tackles in general looks like a home run off season in terms of the additions they made.
30:57The other thing I want to talk about with the Bengals defense in this game is I just thought they were so
31:03well coached and I loved the pressures in particular.
31:06I did a tape on this on NFL live, but the use of simulated pressures I thought was so clever and also so effective against this Texans team.
31:14I'm missing Nico Collins, which is something they did last week.
31:17I mentioned it, I think on last week's show that I thought some of the sim pressures were really smart.
31:23But in this game, there were so many. I mean, I have quite a few charted here.
31:28And what they would do is they would walk up six, seven.
31:31At one point, they went engage eight with Lawrence and Allen as the droppers, which was just.
31:36And Lawrence almost had a PVU. I don't think he actually got it.
31:40He was full Statue of Liberty. He was inches from it.
31:43Make that NFL logo, guys. But what was so clever about it, there's a couple of things.
31:48Obviously, when you have simulated pressures where you show blitz, you drop, you're creating one-on-ones for your edges.
31:53And you saw them who are, you know, ma fame or you saw them winning consistently.
31:57Jonathan Allen got a few one-on-ones and won as a result because you have too many blockers for too few rushers because you're showing blitz and yada.
32:05You understand math. But the other thing I think that was very clever about this is what does CJ Stroud do really well?
32:11What does he do? He blitzed the blitz excellently, right?
32:14Where does he like to throw? Oh, intermediate in-breakers.
32:17Yeah. In-breakers. They were dropping, consistently dropping the safeties and backers into the throwing windows on those in-breakers, forcing him to throw
32:23outside where they, the Bengals, with their very good corners against these very bad Texans receivers, had a clear advantage.
32:29Advantage. So basically, they're creating advantages not only for their pass rushers, but also for the coverage because the area where they're
32:35weaker is the spine of the defense. But CJ didn't have opportunities in those occasions to throw there.
32:40So I just thought Al Golden, Sean Desai, that staff, great job game planning for this particular quarterback and taking advantage of their matchup advantages.
32:47Everything they've done in the secondary since Al Golden has gotten there, I've liked.
32:51Right? They have the DJ Turner's shadow and they'll have him follow around wide receiver ones and allows them to get brackets elsewhere.
32:58They've been able to, I think, use Jordan Battle really effectively.
33:01Jordan Battle is a player who like... He's usually a dropper, by the way, on these impressors.
33:06He's the one... I like what Battle's good at quite a bit from a tackling perspective, from a physicality perspective in the box.
33:12This is a limited player who you want to hide at times and they do a really nice job, I think, hiding
33:19him and kind of minimizing his scope and coverage.
33:21Brian Cook's been a big part of that as well here in year two.
33:25And so from a secondary perspective, everything they've done there from a coaching style I've always liked.
33:30Last year, the running game was like, oh my God, what are we up to?
33:34And now they just have bodies. They can be a lot more simple up front and continue to pour those resources in the defensive back end.
33:42And yeah, if Jared Wayne punks you downfield on a sideline ball than he does, you just wash your hands and go next.
33:48And okay, he did that one time, but it's Jared Wayne.
33:51It's almost Jared Wayne in his game, by the way.
33:54Texans, man. The Texans, once a game, hit an unbelievable explosive to Jalen Dole, who was just running away from...
34:00Jalen Dole's leaving DJ Turner, who runs a 4-2 in the dust.
34:03Every week they hit it, and they're like, let's never do this again.
34:07And it drives me nuts! Yeah, there's a lot of things.
34:10I don't know why they use so much 11 personnel in this game as well.
34:14I thought we would see more of the tight ends.
34:17I don't know. Very frustrating from Houston, the 0-2 Texans.
34:20All right, your winner for the week. We're going back to the Broncos.
34:24Well, Broncos, a huge, huge, huge win. And firstly, at home, beating the Jacksonville Jaguars and going 1-1, not falling into that
34:30same 0-2 hole that the Texans are in now.
34:33But then also, I thought, you know, from an improvement on some of the stuff that we talked about from week one
34:39to week two perspective, just check the boxes across the board.
34:42We'll start defensively. Trevor Lawrence was on one in this game.
34:45Lawrence was a flamethrower. Lawrence was hitting throws against man, against zone.
34:49It was accurate. He was reading things out. Lawrence was outside of his mind.
34:53And the Broncos, I think, very nicely said, OK, we need to break the pocket, right?
34:57We're going to lose to some explosives here. Our secondary is not having the kind of blanket effect that we wanted to have.
35:04So we're going to start sending more blitzes, presenting more early down pressures.
35:07We're going to really test, you know, the young guard and Emmanuel pregnant.
35:11We're going to test this reshuffle Jaguars off its line.
35:14And they got benefit from that. Four pressures apiece for Zach Allen and Nick Benito alike.
35:19Three quick pressures for Zach Allen. Zach Allen in this game took Ezra Cleveland and Emmanuel pregnant.
35:23Oh my God, he was unbelievable in this game.
35:26The Broncos do a great job. They do a great job widening out the offensive line, forcing wider splits and getting, you know, the pocket, the fan out.
35:34So Allen can get two way goes. And then he's just ripping guys off, off, off the turf.
35:39And he's able to finish through and keep his balance.
35:42So Allen, big, big, big splashy there. So defensively, I thought that, you know, they got extremely embarrassed from a missed tackle perspective in week one.
35:49In week two, Trevor Lawrence is lighting up this very, like, you know, vaunted secondary.
35:54There was a chance that things spiraled. And Benito and Zach Allen basically said, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
36:00Like, we are going to break this game at the pocket.
36:03And they did so. That second half was lights out.
36:06Offensively, Bo Nix in week one took so much pressure and very quickly in week two, right?
36:1045%, very clearly in week two just said, we're going to, you know, I'm going to get the ball out a lot faster.
36:17Sometimes the offense is detriment, but generally distributed the football a lot cleaner, a lot quicker, but the office line played a lot better in pass protection there.
36:25And then Davis Webb, a little bit less. Look at this cool thing I thought of in the summer.
36:30Look at these three players moving around in the backfield, a little bit more bread and butter, a little bit more bread
36:37and honey, get to our base plays. And they were a lot more successful base plays.
36:41But I thought he put some interesting twists on some of the stuff that they did in the second half.
36:47So in the sec, obviously the offense looked bad in the first half and the second half, you really saw the turnaround.
36:53First of all, they cut down on the screens mercifully.
36:56Good God. But one out of every three Bo Nix dropbacks in the second half was a designed rollout, which they weren't working in the first half.
37:04The Jags were all over it, but he got some really creative stuff out there.
37:08The two best plays were Nate Adkins, both of them.
37:11Yeah, the release. Yeah. The one where there's the big, the explosive.
37:14He is the third option on a three-man concept to the left side.
37:18When Nix rolls out, the Jags are thinking, ain't no way.
37:21It's 22 personnel. They got their base defense out there.
37:24And then Adkins goes above Sutton on that. I think that really took them by surprise.
37:28And then the touchdown was a really cool play where they've got him lined up next to shoot one of the other tight ends.
37:35I forget. And then 82. And then, and Bryant releases in between them and motions in and releases in between them.
37:41Adkins wide open in the flat there. So I thought he understood Davis Webb, and this is promising, right?
37:47Quarterbacks, the best throwing on the move. We get that.
37:49The Jags are all over some of our designed rollouts.
37:52So we want the design rollout game to be a big part of this offense, but let's put some twists on it
37:59in terms of who's getting the football in a way I thought was really clever.
38:03The other thing Bo Nix did in this game, and I saw you post one of these plays, so I want to talk about it.
38:10Yeah, the Waddle in breaker with anticipation. Between the numbers, Bo Nix went 12 for 13 for 160 yards, 66 yards, pardon me, in this game.
38:17It's not a lot, like in terms of volume.
38:20Like he was still throwing primarily outside the numbers.
38:22But you saw, you know, what you didn't see week one, which is this has to be a credible part of this passing attack.
38:29Otherwise, defenses are just going to take away those outbreakers.
38:32And the one you posted was the one we talked about this on live yesterday.
38:36The dig to waddle on third down anticipatory throw ball is out between the hashes before waddle breaks.
38:42That is the type of throw that Jalen waddle was brought in to coax out Bo Nix.
38:46He also hit him on like a post, a crosser.
38:49So I just think like, you know, that's so important.
38:52Bo Nix is never going to be Jared guff.
38:55He's never going to have a high percentage of his throws between the numbers.
38:59But you need to threaten there. And this week they did against Jacksonville, largely thanks to Jalen waddle.
39:04Good to have said it better. It is the it is the presence of this in the offense, not as our primary, but as the side dish.
39:11You have to respect this. We're going to do it because the Jags are lined up in, you know, full pressure look
39:18on third down and then they're dropping a backup linebacker off the line of scrimmage into that zone.
39:23And the only way a defense gets to treat you like that is if you're if they don't fear your quarterback throwing that linebacker wrong.
39:30That is a white linebacker wearing 50 throw the ball at him, right?
39:34You have to have to have to do this.
39:36And if you do it enough and like it's a fastball, it's on time.
39:40It's not accurate. Pulls Jalen waddle into the ground, right?
39:43When Bo goes to put velocity on the ball, like he tends to get some sprays.
39:48If you do this enough where you actually get some yards up for the catch after this.
39:52Now we're actually attacking enough geometry of the field, right?
39:55My number like, you know, Broncos fans are convinced I hate Bo Nix.
39:59I've never hated Bo Nix. I've always been perfectly milquetoast on Bo Nix.
40:03The thing that drives me crazy about Bo Nix is that he has enough arm to rip and trigger intermediate throws and he never ever does it.
40:10He is too cautious. He's too quick to throw the check down.
40:14And then he'll sell these beautiful downfield balls. And it's like, yeah, but you need to use velocity in the middle of the field.
40:21If you can do this with Jalen waddle, you become a super bowl caliber passing attack.
40:25Immediately. One of the waddles balls was like a deep post versus quarters, I think.
40:29And yeah, like he's got, he's on the run throwing it.
40:33It's beautiful. He's got arm strength. It's, it's just like that.
40:36Part of the field has not been available to this offense.
40:39So that's an important development for this Broncos offense.
40:41Very big win. Very felt. By the way, I just realized Rams Broncos this week.
40:46That was my super bowl pick Rams Broncos. You on that too?
40:49Or I was Rams Ravens, which I would like, I was Rams.
40:53And then like put your hand into a hat and pick out one of seven AFC teams.
40:57Like I was Broncos Texans. I was there on all of them.
41:01ESPN's going to super bowl 61. And so can you enter for a chance to win the trip of a lifetime for

41:32Visit www.espn.com slash SBL XI void. We're prohibited. All right.
41:35Woofs. I'll go first here. I don't even know where to start with the LA chargers.
41:40I mean, there's nowhere that's wrong. Yeah. Run defense.
41:42So, okay. God here, here is the LA chargers in a nutshell, seven false starts.
41:47It's the most in the NFL through two weeks.
41:49Uh, I watched just to torture myself. All the Quentin Johnson targets in this game.
41:53He went one for five or seven yards. Heck yeah.
41:56First target tip pass. Second, perfect hole shot. He doesn't catch.
41:59Third, he trips. Four. It's a four yard screen in a legal formation.
42:03Five. Herbert misses him. Yep. That to me encapsulates the state of the charges passing attack at the moment.
42:09Everything is not working except for Ladbukonki at the moment.
42:11It's just brutal to watch. And I think very important in what you said there is that Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater aren't working.
42:18This to me is like the biggest canary in the coal mine where both all in Slater look to me like guys
42:25who are still coming back from injury and are not a hundred percent.
42:28The numbers think all it's having like kind of an okay season.
42:32He's like fine and pass block win rate. The numbers on Slater.
42:35He's like one of the 10 worst office alignment in football through two weeks.
42:39Right now. Some of this is. It's real. Yeah.
42:42And some of this is, is scheme and structure and like what's McTain asking you to do and like learning assignments.
42:48And there's been busted protections or whatever. Some of it is, hey, we all, you know, very quickly in our like, you
42:54know, paragraphs of thoughts about how the charges were looking at the interior offensive line.
42:58We very quickly said, well, like obviously they have elite tackles.
43:01So you do that. And then like you can do all these, you know, clever things, guard center, guard protection wise.
43:07You can put all your resources there. Yeah. What if you just don't have elite tackles?
43:12What if you have like, I would even just say like fine.
43:15Like they both are like a, like a little bit worse, but if they're average tackles with this interior in this scheme,
43:21with this quarterback who likes to take too many hits.
43:24It is, it is. Every pocket is an unmitigated disaster.
43:27The shape of it is not good. Herbert is not comfortable in it.
43:31And then like, you know, they're trying to hit timing routes where Herbert's just supposed to throw these things blind.
43:37He doesn't want to throw them blind. It doesn't work.
43:39Yeah. Right. So like I, one of my biggest regrets here is I think not questioning and Orlovsky made some good points
43:46in the offseason because we're all like charges offense.
43:48Let's go. Mike McDaniel, run game, Justin Herbert. Herbert and Orlovsky.
43:51I remember on NFL live or someone was like, I don't know about the marriage between this quarterback and this play caller.
43:58And I was like, yeah, that'll be fine. It's not fine.
44:01Now it's obviously not just Justin Herbert. The run game is just a symphony of execution flaws.
44:06Every play. Every play. Somebody different. F's up. The guys they brought in.
44:09The fullbacks been awful. Horrendous. Alec. Ingold is, I mean, like, I love Alec.
44:13I put him on all pro list. Horrible. Bruh.
44:16And then they just lost the two. Kohler and Njoku.
44:19I mean, it's been crazy. Yeah. Like they lost both them to injury.
44:22I guess Gadsden is, I mean, he's not a blocker.
44:25Yeah. Slaughter is not moving people at center whatsoever.
44:28The Cole Strange signing. I didn't understand. I didn't even think he was good with the Dolphins.
44:33And then he is just a complete liability in pass protection.
44:36And you're not even getting value with him moving it in the running game.
44:40And then Awashika is, Awashika might be the best run blocker they have.
44:43Guard center guard. And this is the guy that wasn't even starting in week one.
44:48Because they rotate with Pipkins. And he went out there for week two.
44:51And now he's banged up. So. This sentence is the most cursed sentence I've read all week.
44:56Trey Pipkins, who rotated left guard with Awashika in week one, would be in line to start.
45:01But he missed Sunday's game with a knee injury.
45:04Harbaugh said that Trevor Penning will start at left guard if Pipkins isn't healthy to go.
45:08Just, again, some of this is out of their control.
45:11Like, of course, Biotish getting hurt. All these guys.
45:14But this was not a, you know, a team that I think sufficiently invested in the guard position this offseason, despite having a bazillion dollars in cap space.
45:22And, oh, we haven't even gotten to the defense, which, you know, that was something I did say all summer.
45:27I think this defense is going to take a step back.
45:30I didn't think that they were going to get torched by Kirk Cousins and Jacoby Brissett.
45:35And I want to give Kirk and the Raiders offense, which did a lot of cool stuff, some credit.
45:40Because I did think Clint Kubiak had a great game plan and has really found ways to get the most out of their skill players.
45:48Trey Tucker got him some opportunities downfield. But here's the thing about Kirk Cousins.
45:52And we know this about him from watching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
45:55If you play zone coverage against him and you leave those windows open, he will throw into them.
46:00The Chargers' zone windows, which used to go brrr, are just open for business right now.
46:05This is the big thing. It's just like... If you can read it...
46:08Right. It's so nice and easy to say from the outside.
46:11So here's what you do with a defense. You take the two-high dial and you turn it up.
46:17And you take the zone-match dial and you crank it.
46:19You take the simulated-pressure dial and you turn it to a 10.
46:23Like, you press all these big, big, big buttons.
46:25But the reality is that while offense can be like, match the button, match the flashing button, match the, you know, under center button, whatever.
46:33Defense is a lot more tools to solve problems.
46:35So it's like, okay, simulated pressures, zone cover, split field.
46:38Yeah, if I give my two-year-old a hammer and a screwdriver, like she doesn't know what to do with them.
46:44She's just going to cause problems, right? Like, it's not going to be beneficial.
46:48You give her the right tools for the job, she ain't going to build the IKEA dresser.
46:52And so Jesse Minter to Chris O'Leary. Jesse Minter's defense over the last two years was a high zone cover, high-to-high, high light box defense.
47:00Great. Those defenses usually give up a decently high success rate, but they limit explosives and they tighten down in the red zone.
47:06And with Minter, for the last two years, they've been a low success rate defense.
47:10They've somehow been a high zone, light box defender, but not giving up successful plays because they screwed down on everything.
47:16They were dialed in on tendencies. They were driving in on routes, man.
47:20They looked passive on like next-gen stats data sheets.
47:23They were actually aggressive and they were creating forcing tight windows and winning the football.
47:27This defense does all the big strokes the same with Chris O'Leary.
47:30Oh, too high. Derwin James, like light packages, like all that stuff.
47:34But they are not so nearly as dialed in on tendency.
47:37They are not so nearly as sharp. And so they're still stopping explosives, but they're giving up a super high success rate.
47:43And then on their tight windows- See, that's Todd to Trey Tucker who's still running downfield between the safeties.
47:49And then on their tight window throws, because they're actually forcing, they have the second highest tight window throw rate in all of the league.
47:56Only the Bills even forcing more tight window throws.
47:58They can't break up the pass because they're late and they're not big enough.
48:02Right? Cody White is dunking on you for touchdowns.
48:05What are we doing from a personnel perspective? So there you are.
48:08Yeah, did he get a better job of getting pressure in this one?
48:12Again, credit to Kirk Cousins, because I didn't think he was pretty good in this game.
48:16And I know I've been skeptical of him to start the season, but I thought he was really, really good in this game.
48:23And coupled with a really, really smart- Clint Kubiak just kind of got the goods as a play caller.
48:28Clint, I live in awe of Clint Kubiak, man.
48:31I can't believe how good he is. Yeah, I'm not selling my Mendoza starting soon stocks, but man, Raiders 2 and 0
48:37is not helping me out there in my Mendoza propaganda.
48:40At least he's on the sideline wearing a helmet, imitating dropbacks.
48:43My absolute hard study and go. I love that kid so much.
48:47Hezekiah Massis, by the way. Get a man out of cow.
48:50Okay. Great, great name for nicknames. All right. So I guess to put a bow on the Chargers, I think week one,
48:56my Chargers coat was that they were like one execution error away from breaking off a bunch of big runs.
49:02But with all of these injuries, it's kind of hard for me to find the cope right now.
49:07Yeah. And one week of execution errors is one week of execution errors.
49:11Two weeks is what we're working on the offseason, fellas.
49:13Like what- Coaching is just like, what the hell's going on?
49:17After this, they've got the Spills. Spills, Seahawks, Broncos, Chiefs, Rams, Texans, Ravens.
49:20Yeah. They're going to get beaten with a baseball bat, dude.
49:23I mean, they got no shot. Jeremiah Smith, LA Charger on the table.
49:27Is that the cope? I mean, it's good cope.
49:30I, you know, seeing the way this front office has moved, I'm guessing we're going to get like, you know, a fifth
49:36round pick sent for Marvin Harrison Jr. And then they're going to be like, whoa, we're fine.
49:41All right. Your wolf. This is one I've been wanting to talk about after watching the tape.
49:46Give it to me. I don't know what side of the ball you want to focus on.
49:50I could do either here. Yeah. All right. I'll wolf the Buccaneers, and I will start defensively, which is the tape I've most recently watched.
49:58There are a lot of individual players on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who I think are making good plays.
50:03I think Josiah Trotter, and I think that Antoine Winfield, and I think that Elijah Roberts, and Vita Vea, and, you know, Zion McCollum.
50:10I think these players are making good individual plays.
50:12When you have this many good players making good individual plays, and you are continuing to bleed yardage, we have a coaching problem.
50:19And this is a coaching problem that has been around in Tampa Bay, very evident for a while.
50:24Sorry to interrupt you, but like, I watched this late last night.
50:27So, half the time when they're playing zone coverage, I do, I cannot tell what they're playing, because half of the, it
50:34feels like half the defense is doing one thing, and half the defense is doing something else.
50:39The sale route to Fanon on the first drive.
50:41It's a two-man concept, and they don't know who's supposed to be where.
50:45So much bust. Yes. The linebackers. Okay, by the way, my biggest L, Alex Anzalone.
50:49Yeah, so that's what I was going to get to.
50:52Oh my God. Yeah. Anzalone can't tackle right now.
50:55Cannot get a player down onto the turf. Um, he's fast enough to run with guys, but he doesn't actually stick with them in cover.
51:02And he's also guessing behind the line of scrimmage.
51:04I've got no idea what's going on with Anzalone.
51:07Trotter, at the very least, like, so is disruption.
51:09We were asking a second round rookie linebacker who was already like a feast or famine player to like solve problems because
51:16the veteran he's playing next to can't get into the right gap and can't get players down.
51:20I mean, the, there was a, a TFL that would have ended a drive that Anzalone missed that ended up being the
51:27drive that got down the field into the Denzel Boston throw, which Anzalone is only opens to the three receiver side.
51:33And so, and I understand why he does it, but he's not playing with any cognizance to the quarterback.
51:38Sean's taking you where he's throwing the football. Look at the quarterback.
51:42And then eventually he finally gets back there when Boston catches the ball, can't drive Boston down and ends up slingshotting him down the field for the touchdown.
51:49Anzalone is a clear net negative for the Buckingham defense right now.
51:53It's a huge problem in the second level. Look, Watson played reasonably well in this game.
51:57He averaged 3.7 air yards per attempt. He completed three passes over 10 yards.
52:01The Browns racked up a 163 yards after the catch.
52:04Second only to Kansas city this week. Yep. That's bad defense.
52:07Now I love your Harry O'Fan and is near and dear to my heart.
52:11And he's always going to get you a lot of yards after the catch.
52:15But yeah, the plays that you've talked about, I'm just going back and watching them, the missed tackles, the missed coverages, really
52:22wild stuff from this box defense set. I was very high on coming into the season because of the player talent, but
52:28they just, the coaching right now is, is a real issue for this team.
52:32Now, you know, okay, 23 points. We should be able to win games still with our offense, with what we poured into it.
52:38When we, when the opponents were 23 points, even when they're the Browns.
52:42Baker's a mess right now. I mean, I was through two games.
52:46Baker as has a top five rate in terms of the amount of throws he throws behind the line of scrimmage and
52:52a top five, rate in terms of the amount of throws he throws 20 plus yards down the field, nine attempts over
52:5820 yards in this game for some reason. Yeah.
53:01And, and, and we are shooting downfield to Ted Hurst and a Tez Johnson.
53:05So we're not even like, it's not even like, Oh, prime and me kabuka targets.
53:09There were a couple of kabuka in there and he's disagreeing with Hurst and with Johnson.
53:13He's, he's throwing into space when they're not working into space.
53:17He's throwing them back into coverage when they're trying to work into space.
53:20There's no chemistry on the downfield after these receivers.
53:23So they're not even like, Oh, you know, a bad regression day throwing downfield targets.
53:27No, like these are, uncatchable balls. They're landing in different areas of the field and the receivers are to be when I,
53:33when I see a quarterback who is high behind line of scrimmage and high down the field, that tells me that quarterback is scared of coverage.
53:41He doesn't want to throw it zero to 20 because that's what the defenders are.
53:45So he doesn't trust his receivers. He doesn't trust his timing.
53:48Doesn't trust his feet. Doesn't trust his routes. And it's Zach Robinson, new OC.
53:52And there's a lot of these like motion at the snap releases, bunches and everything, but still you're a 31 year old quarterback.
53:59You're a veteran. It should be better than this.
54:01Then there's the pocket management stuff. Get at it.
54:04I, I got no patience for this because you get on a Netflix special and you talk about all the injuries you have in 2025.
54:11All right, get rid of the football. Young man.
54:14If you're going to be banged up, then you need to be willing to distribute the ball quickly.
54:19Third and seven, Chris Cobbins open on the slant, throw it.
54:22He climbs up and he gets sacked by the safety because he can't outrun the safety.
54:26He's 31 years old. And remember Baker's that Baker has the second highest scramble rate of all quarterbacks over the last three years.
54:33It's Jane Danielson him. His game is very predicated on escapability and athleticism.
54:37And he does not look as quick as he used to look.
54:40And he's still trying to play like the 24 year old, you know, man who was, you know, defeating the doubters and the detractors and whatever.
54:47It's silly stuff. You are a third contract, brother.
54:50Let's it's time to execute the offense, throw the football run game still looks very mixed at best.
54:55The screen game, burn them all with fire. Like on every screen, someone runs into someone else on this.
55:01And I'll tell you, Jared verse, you know, verse had himself a special day in terms of defending screens and play recognition versus a smart cookie, dude.
55:08I was impressed by Jared verse film on the seasons right now.
55:12The Tampa Bay bucks have eight screens averaging 2.6 yards per time.
55:15By the way, I'd look this up out of spite after watching them.
55:19Yeah. So I think if there's coat for the bucks, they're too talented to be this bad.
55:24Like I, you know, I think I said about Zaloni who might just be cooked.
55:28There's still good players on both sides of the ball right now.
55:31How it's a combination of bad quarterback play and bad coaching.
55:34I think it's, we both agree. Uh, that's, um, and like, this is, you know, the Panthers offense looks great, but we
55:41need to see them against a better opponent. The saints are winning game or one beat the Ravens, but they're, it's like weird second half versus first half.
55:49I like the saints. I like what I've seen from Bryce.
55:52I just think the entire NFC South right now is kind of in wait and see mode.
55:57So the bucks is, this is not over. You can still turn it around.
56:01Um, cause the chargers have, you know, the Broncos and the chiefs in their division.
56:05I'm sorry. Don't mean to disrespect the two and all.
56:08It makes me here. So I, uh, I have them.
56:11Who are they playing this week again? Cause I wanted to give them the Raiders.
56:15I don't think the Raiders have the saints. I did.
56:18I'm making that a spotlight game guys. Okay. Yeah.
56:20Go birds. Saints fans. We are talking about both of those teams because I think they've earned the right to be talked about.
56:27We're playing, we're playing another game of being a, that's the line.
56:30Saints are at home hosting the Raiders. What do you think the line is?
56:34Saints by three. That's like a pickup. That is exactly correct.
56:37Mina Kimes. We're, we're, we're, we're going to make a bill Simmons guess the line go out of you yet.
56:43Feeling good about my saints preseason division pick. Safe defense.
56:46I'm right there with you. I have them and I've, I have the Vikings in the NFC North.
56:51I feel like I'm sitting pretty right now. I posted the Vikings.
56:54Yeah, dude, I posted this about the Ravens cause all the rave, everybody was freaking out about like Derek Henry only getting one tart, York Curry.
57:02But when you go back and watch, they only had three possessions for the two minute drill.
57:07And one of the, like two of them, they get runs, get blown up and then they can't really run the ball.
57:13There's only the third one where they should. But my overwhelming takeaway watching those Ravens drives was not like, Oh my God, Declan Doyle, you idiot.
57:20It was goddamn. A lot of saints defenders are executing at a high level.
57:24Yeah. They were run blitzing. Right. And then taking advantage of the young center.
57:28The Ravens were also, the Ravens were also only up by eight the entire second half.
57:33Yeah. So it wasn't like they were like, right.
57:35How did the Ravens not feed Derek Henry? It was a one possession game.
57:39Like, it was a neutral game. The Saints defense might be good.
57:43Also, like, can we accept that? This is something we saw in the second half of last season.
57:48Go. Quincy Riley. So good. Caden Ellis really good at what he does.
57:52I like the same defense. I really do. Carl Granderson makes to blow up the screen.
57:56Like we just saw the Ravens pop one of those for like 20 yards last week.
58:01It was so heads up and so intelligent. They just are.
58:04They look well coached. Like you said, the adjustment with the blitzes in the interior, really smart.
58:09So Ravens had like negative eight special teams, EPA in that game.
58:12Like I know, I know it was a wonky game.
58:15Yeah. They're the hardest fan base to say this to, but it's like this one probably was just weird.
58:20This one was probably just random. Losing the same like stupid ways.
58:24So I think that's what's so frustrating. Yeah, I agree.
58:27Okay. Ravens Cowboys this coming week. So that will also get in Brazil.
58:30That'll be weird no matter what. All right. We'll be back later this week with Dominique to preview week to Ben.
58:36Where can folks check out your work? Benjamin Solak on Twitter and on Instagram and on TikTok.
58:41And my column came out on Tuesday and I will probably be able to announce things next week.
58:46Very excited. All right. Stay tuned. The next Monday game is, oh, it's the Bears Eagles.
58:51Tyson, magic, magic bag, man. I mean, listen, listen, better than Winston.
58:54We'll put up a fight. Also, their Eagles run defense against Chicago.
58:58Exactly. Remember the Eagles Bears game last year with the way the Bears ran the football?
59:02I don't know, man. Bears that the Eagles run offense right now sucks.
59:06Like it is. That's an interesting game without Caleb.
59:09I was, I just felt too tough to just buy the bagels defense, but I didn't want to put the Eagles receivers
59:15as my winners because I love them both very dearly.
59:18And they're very special, special to my heart. It's just really good.
59:21Now I've, I've, I've also asked me like, how do we get lemon more involved?
59:25I'm like, buddy, Don Tavion Wicks has a starting job and he's never giving it away.
59:30Should Howie, should Howie have drafted a law offensive lineman?
59:33Hmm. My goat wash. All right. That's it. We got to go.
59:36I got to go do NFL live, go check out Ben on all the socials.
59:40He'll be back next week. Hopefully with some news for you all.
59:44Thank you. As always to everyone at Omaha productions, Kirsten, Becky, Owen Saylor, Jack Foster.
59:48Fashion. We're out.
