2:32It is Monday night. The US lost. They got spanked 4-1.
2:36So I've been better. But we're not here to talk about that football.
2:40We're here to talk about American football. Football Americano, as they say.
2:44And we are here joined by Kupa from South Harmon to go over the best ball dynasty.
2:49We are keeping that series going. Kupa, what's going on, man?
2:53Not too much. I was mentioning pre-show, my AC went out today.
2:57So you know, recording a nice balmy 81 degrees here.
3:00So if you got some hot takes, know that they're coming because it is hot.
3:05It is hot. Hopefully not like damp takes. We could do without the damp takes, but let's get some hot takes going.
3:12All right, guys, as it is in July here around future first, we are continuing our best balling series talking only about
3:19dynasty best ball because it is one of our favorite formats.
3:23Jose and I are self-proclaimed experts. We started in best ball dynasty here.
3:27That was our first, was my first dynasty league was yours too, right?
3:31Jose. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, we specialize in it.
3:34It is our favorite way to go about it.
3:37And we're going to have some of those starting up here at the end of this month.

4:35And this last one was with, is it Ghostie who we did?
4:39I don't remember. You guys go check it out.
4:42It was a good one. Other than that, if you're on Spotify, follow and rate the show, drop a five-star review.

4:54Follow her on X at BFoxworth07. Okay. You guys, I went over that as fast as I could so that we could
5:01get into the meat of this episode, because there is a lot of good stuff to get through.
5:07So we're going to talk about dynasty best ball roster construction today, specifically quarterbacks and tight ends.
5:12Are you guys ready? Let's do it. But first, I'm sorry, as always a quick hit.
5:18All right. For tonight's quick hit, the news cycle is slow out there.
5:22Not a lot of topical information. We did not want to give Brandon Ayuk any more minutes of airtime here.
5:28So we are going to talk about Koopa because he is the guest of the honor here.
5:34And we're going to ask you, Koopa, what is your general approach here to best ball dynasty?
5:39Lay the groundwork here for how you play the game and approach it in general here?
5:44Yeah. So the main thing that if you followed stuff that I've done, you know that I do a bunch of stuff with warp.
5:52I have my own tool over at southharmonff.com that it's one that I've created.
5:57So I trust all the math behind it. And what I have learned from utilizing that on best ball leagues, and I'm
6:04probably in 25 of them or something like that, is that there's some positions that it's really easy to find people that
6:11with enough volume, you're going to be able to get some points out.
6:15And there's other positions where you're just horribly limited.
6:18And so in a rule of thumb, and I loved the, this, the, that it was mentioned in last week's pod is
6:25two players for every single position rule of thumb.
6:28That's what I want. If I need a QB one, I want two QB ones.
6:33If I want to make sure I have a QB two, two QB twos.
6:38So I'm looking at a warp chart and I'm going, okay, in order for me to have an optimal team, I want it.
6:45I want to have a QB one. I want to have two wide receiver twos.
6:50I want to have an RB one and two RB threes and a, and a tight end too.
6:56Well, everything that I just said, what I want on my team, I want double of that.
7:01So if I'm like, okay, I want two good quarterback twos.
7:05I want to make sure I have at least four quarterback twos in order to fill those spots in my lineup.
7:12If I want the one RB one, well, I want two RB ones.
7:16So I'm probably investing a lot in the top tier running backs.
7:20If I'm looking at, okay, I just need some, some tight end threes.
7:24Okay. I might just be tossing two like middling tight ends at the problem and just calling it there.
7:30Now, of course it gets down into the flex spots and flex spots are completely variable.
7:35And that's where I tend to flex a lot based on the values that the rest of my league is looking at it.
7:43I find that a lot of people, when they're playing best ball, they do a very poor job of separating the values
7:50of players and best ball from those in lineup.
7:53So if I am going to be trying to fill out my flex spots, I'm looking at, okay, well, a lot of
8:00people aren't valuing like lower tier tight ends or lower tier wide receivers, because in a normal lineup league, you aren't ever
8:07going to start those guys, but in best ball with enough volume, you can get some really good points out of those
8:14guys, but that of course relies on your league being deep enough to take advantage of that volume.
8:20So you have to combine all of those factors together to figure out, okay, what is the optimal lineup that I'm trying
8:27to, to create based on the value that the rest of my league is giving me, but it all comes back to,
8:34I want two for every single type of player on my team.
8:38It just might change league to league with scoring settings and things like that, whether what tier at each position that I'm trying to target.
8:46Yeah. I mean, that's, that's amazing. It's probably a lot easier said than done.
8:51I imagine getting those two RB ones, two QB ones, all of them, even the four, like you're saying, but still, I
8:58believe the, what you're saying here, that's just the goal of where you're trying to get to.
9:03And obviously dynasties aren't built in a day. You're, it's going to take some time to kind of morph and mold that
9:11team into exactly what you're looking for here. Jose, what do you think about this approach?
9:16Are you similarly aligned with it or kind of, uh, do you, you know, deviate in some way?
9:22Yeah. I mean, I think it all, it's, it's has to be league by league.
9:26I think that's obviously a great end goal to have.
9:30Like if you're playing fantasy and dynasty in particular, like you need to have a goal that you're aiming for.
9:36Um, and so I think what Kupa is talking about is, is a great road map.
9:41Like, I mean, obviously I'm sure you've done well, not having everything that you just mentioned.
9:46I mean, I think that's like the exodia of, you know, your build, your final build.
9:52And, um, that's when you become like the super team in the league, when you're able to kind of get into that,
9:59especially in dynasty as you, you know, you have to kind of churn.
10:03And sometimes that running back one is Derek Henry, who's been a running back one for five years, but we know his,
10:10you know, he's about the, the shoes are going to drop their CMC or some of those players.
10:16Like it's definitely, um, harder said than none, but I think it makes a lot of sense, um, in terms of how
10:23to build, uh, the best team possible in, uh, in a dynasty basketball format.
10:28Yeah, no, I, I tend to agree there and I like the approach that we're going there.
10:33So Kupa, since we have a little bit more time here, that's what like a contending roster would look like for you, right?
10:41What is a rebuilding roster look like for you?
10:44And maybe I'm throwing a curveball at you. You weren't ready for this, but necessarily, but I feel like you're going to
10:51be able to answer this on the flyer. Yeah.
10:54A rebuilding roster in a lineup league, I am fine tearing it down to the bones.
10:59Like where my starting lineup is almost something where it's like, I feel like I have a chance at scoring zero points
11:06this week in a best ball league. If you tear it down all the way to the bones and the way you've
11:13done that isn't by getting every single draft pick in the upcoming class, then you are at a serious risk of not
11:20having a team that is going to be able to contend.
11:24And that you are, even when you get the couple draft picks that you have, and you have a couple players, uh,
11:31come back, like maybe you had some injured guys and things like that, that you don't have enough firepower in order to
11:38turn this back around to being a contending team.
11:41I find that if you don't do enough work to diversify out into enough assets that are still high enough value, you
11:48end up coming out of your rebuild is like the sixth or seventh place team.
11:53And in best ball, it is so much harder is the sixth or seventh place team to make the playoffs and then
12:00beat the other teams in the league. Because with the scoring settings being such the way that they are that, Hey, if
12:07somebody has a bad week out of their player, maybe their star gets hurt.
12:12It doesn't become, Hey, the 20 points they were expecting out of Jamar chase becomes a zero.
12:17It's the 20 points becomes the replacement player that they have on their team, which might still be 13 or 14 points.
12:24So you're only seeing a difference of six points there.
12:28And all of a sudden you still have to make up those other 13 with the rest of your team.
12:34And so you see a lot more of the number one and number two seeds being able to continue on through the
12:41playoffs because they just have such a deep team and they don't get hampered by the kinds of things that in a
12:48normal lineup league might kill a playoff run. Yeah.
12:51So would you say then for a rebuilding team that instead of like selling for picks, like you're saying, you obviously want
12:58those picks because those are going to hire going to replenish your team, your team in the cheapest manner.
13:04But would you say like consolidating up into like a more secure younger asset is, is a good way to approach this.
13:12If you can also get some plus on top of that, if that's a pick or, or another player, I find that
13:19typically contending teams do want to tear down and split assets.
13:22And so sometimes if you can find an injured asset, not only can you buy them cheap, but you can consolidate into
13:29them, which is only safety into the future. And you can kind of have that asset.
13:35That's not going to get you points now, but be somebody for you in the future that can get you those big
13:42boom weeks, but also have a safe floor. You have to go into it with the idea of, I don't care about what players I'm getting.
13:50I just need to accumulate value. And you have, you almost have to get to a higher value threshold before you turn
13:57it into actually getting points on your roster than you would with a normal lineup league.
14:02Because in a normal lineup league, you oftentimes run into the scenario where like, cause I have a, of my few lineup
14:10teams, I have a couple of them. We're going into this year.
14:14It's like a start 10 and yeah, I've got like nine good guys on my team and I'm filling in one lineup
14:21spot and we'll see, but I'm not tossing that team at out the window of like, okay, this isn't going to be competing this year.
14:29That team might be competing for me, but in best ball, if I'm sitting there with nine guys and I'm in, it's
14:36a start 10 that that team is probably is getting the one Oh three or one Oh four.
14:42Like, because you just do not have the depth that you need.
14:46And so if I'm going to be trying to turn this value game into points when I have nine or 10 good players, that's not enough value.
14:54I still need to be in value accrual mode.
14:57I, I don't need to care about, okay, I've got nine good guys.
15:01I could try and roll this into the season.
15:04No, I need to, I can try to use those guys to move into assets, whether those are younger injured assets, whether
15:12those are, um, assets that maybe there's somebody that understands the idea of, I take a top tier player and I split them and I come out ahead.
15:21And so you take some of your assets and you tear up in order to get some of that, that value that
15:28a contending team is willing to give up in the name of points.
15:32Exactly. And you have to continue to keep doing it over and over and over again until basically you look on whether
15:39it's the, um, the, the OTC calculator, whether it's dynasty daddy, whatever tool you use and you see, Hey, value wise, my
15:46team is number one or number two in the league.
15:49Then you can start flipping it over into contending, but you can't do that when you're middle of the pack.
15:56You can't make that switch because you just won't have the firepower to compete with the teams that are already established.
16:03Yeah, no, that's, I was just telling Jose that too, the other day, like we were talking offline.
16:09I was like, man, I'm just like at this point now we're in best ball.
16:13Like all I want to do is just a crew value, a crew value.
16:18And then when the season gets into the place and something hits my way, then I can make my move in season.
16:25If I feel like the team is there. Jose, what do you think about this, man?
16:30Are you, you kind of aligned in that way?
16:33Yeah, a hundred percent. I think too many people get into, um, dynasty best ball and they kind of treat it and
16:40kind of don't think about the best ball aspect enough.
16:44They definitely think about it when they're building their roster to some extent, but when it's time to rebuild the wet scene,
16:51way too many teams that kind of tank, um, in that format.
16:55And it's like in a, in a lineup league, getting the one-on-one back-to-back years is, is great in a best ball league.
17:02You're probably then just ending up having to split that asset multiple times to try to accrue the value.
17:08If you don't kind of dominate you, like if you're going to tank in that sort of format, um, like you need
17:15to acquire like half of the draft for the following like two years.
17:19And even then, I think you might still be in a position where you're, you're not having enough firepower because, um, as
17:26Cooper said, like, um, and I, that was one of the things that I kind of ran into the first year when
17:33I, um, played dynasty best ball was I loved my starting lineup.
17:37I had, if it was a, if it was a non-best ball league, it would be probably one of the best lineups, you know, you would dream of.
17:46But then after that, there was just no, um, no bad backups.
17:50Right. So like, as soon as I got into the playoffs and one or two of the players didn't perform, I lost
17:57because yeah, I had CD Brown, CD lamb, AJ Brown and I'm on Ross St.
18:02Brown, but like CD lamb and I'm on Ross St.
18:06Brown both had bad games. So then I went home in the first round because, you know, I just didn't have enough player depth.
18:13Right. So, um, I think that all makes a lot of sense.
18:17And I think it's something that not enough people pay attention to how hard it actually is to compete, like in a
18:24dynasty best ball that has like 10, 11 starting spots, just because you really need to have enough firepower to, um, get
18:31through the season and the war of attrition that like happens with injuries and players just not performing to the level that
18:39you thought like, and, and it's very difficult. Um, once the league is established, like I think in a dynasty best ball
18:46league, it's one of the least ones where I want to do a early punt unless I'm like really early in the game.
18:53And I accrue so many picks so much value, like out of a startup, I think it's one of the most daunting
19:00tasks because things can really go sideways. Yeah. Agree.
19:03All right, Koopa. I feel like we have laid proper groundwork here, but is there anything else you feel like we need
19:10to know here before we move on and get into the roster construction itself?
19:15Just that best ball is fun. And if you're listening to this, not having done it before, uh, you will, you will
19:22be like me and enjoy your Sunday morning so much better when you don't have to worry about who's starting or not that week.
19:30That is so true. Although if we could only get sleeper to plug in the projected players correctly for a best ball
19:37lineup, I would be a lot happier. It'd be a lot easier to tell how I'm doing in that week, but you
19:44learn you grow, you figure out what the, what to look for, but okay.
19:49If there's nothing else here, we're going to pause to hear a word from the pod father and dynasty deluxe.
19:55And we'll be back with you guys on the other side here to talk about roster construction for quarterbacks.
20:01If you play in dynasty, you need dynasty. Deluxe are premium package for dynasty leaguers.
20:06We rank over 300 players updated every week, all year long.
20:10And there's a win now mode and a rebuild mode with super flex and tight end premium controls and a dynasty league
20:17sync where you can say, sink down all of my sleeper teams, all my FFPC teams.
20:22And then you can browse around your leagues for who has needs.
20:26And then you could use our trade finder to see what kinds of trades are happening in leagues that are similar to the one I want to do.
20:35Then you can analyze trades using our trade analyzer, which balances the lifetime value, which includes pick values out to like 20, 28, all of that.
20:43Plus the rookie guide, $25 value is included. So if you're just in one dynasty league, dynasty deluxe is well worth it
20:50and use your host's promo code and you can bump up to all in and get $25 off.
20:56If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That sounds right until you actually do the math.
21:01For most businesses, shipping is that thing. What's it actually costing you?
21:05Because if nobody's questioning it, it's probably costing way more than it should because most businesses are overpaying on shipping without even realizing it.

21:51This episode is brought to you by Troll Co.
21:54Clothing. And oh, is this one worth it? You know, more than a few people have asked me about Troll Co.
22:01So let me actually tell you about it. I wear their hats, their sweatshirts.
22:05I have for a while now. The quality on both is legitimately good.
22:10The hats hold their shape. The sweatshirts are the kind of heavy that you actually want, not the thin stuff that pills after three washes.
22:18I just like them. The reason I connected with the brand in the first place is the story behind it.
22:24You know, the phrase dirty hands, clean money. It's a blue collar saying that has been around forever.
22:30It's the idea that honest, hard, physical work is how you build a good life.
22:35Troll Co. It was started by two guys who came out of the oil patch who could not find any clothing that represented people like them.
22:43So they built it themselves. That is the kind of origin story I respect.
22:48And the product truly backs it up. If you want to check them out, go to trollco.com slash profiler.

22:59All right. Welcome back. Here we are in our main segment for today, Dynasty Best Ball Roster Construction.
23:05We're going to cover quarterbacks and tight ends. For the roster construction for the whole series, not only this week, but also
23:12next, you can go ahead and assume that we're working with a 12 by 11 league super flex tight end premium.
23:19If you need to assign a number to it, let's go ahead and assign it as a 1.0 tight end premium, give it a significant bump here.
23:28And we're going to call the rosters 27 deep.
23:31So right in between what I would call a shallow league and a larger league for a best ball, just a nice middle ground for it.
23:39So that way it's like the half PPR of scoring, you know, like let's just work with that.
23:45So that way we know it covers both ends.
23:48All right, let's dive into it here. And I'm just going to throw out a question to both of you.
23:54What is your process for evaluating a roster build, particularly for QBs?
23:58Where do you start? Do you start with scoring settings and roster settings, the war?
24:03Are you looking at your league mates? Do you need a team direction first before you can start looking at what kind of quarterbacks you're building into?
24:12So let's go ahead and toss this over to you first, Kupa.
24:16What is your process here for evaluating a roster build?
24:19I am always going to start with scoring settings for quarterback.
24:23I, the quarterback is a position that I am very much either in or out when it comes to best ball.
24:29So what I mean by that is if quarterback is a significant value position, it's very high up on a, on a warp chart.
24:37It, it's something that, you know, it, in your standard scoring settings, like it, it, that we are assuming for this example
24:44league, like if we're talking to straight up half PPR, sure, we got a tight end premium, but there's nothing extra going on.
24:52Quarterback is a valuable position and quarterback is one of those things where on any given week, there is only 32 available players.
24:59And if we're talking about starting two of them, and I said, I want double whatever I need to start.
25:06So I need four quarterbacks. If every other team in the league also thinks the same way, only eight of us can get to four quarterbacks.
25:14So already four teams are left out where they don't even have a single one.
25:19And what did I mention when I was talking about the, the rebuild thing?
25:24I don't want to go all the way down to zero.
25:27Like I don't want to go completely bare bones.
25:30And most people that know what they're doing a best ball are going to think a similar way.
25:36So realistically getting four quarterbacks is actually really, really hard unless you focus on it right out of the gate.
25:42And so when I am looking at a league where, okay, if I need to have good quarterbacks, then I am absolutely
25:50diving in on making probably four of my first like six or seven picks in the startup starting quarterbacks that I know
25:57are going to have consistent jobs year after year, and that I'm not going to need to keep diving to the well
26:04of, well, is this guy going to be a quarterback this year?
26:08Or I don't think he'll be one come next off season.
26:11Those sorts of things. Okay. If the quarterback position is something where it's completely down at the bottom, like maybe there's another position that is way higher up.
26:20Like I had a league where the running back position was just basically so high over every other position that I was
26:27just hammering running back every single time. Then yeah, I'm going to go lean at quarterback.
26:33I'm going to rely on a large backup quarterback stable.
26:36I'm going to utilize a bunch of my depths in order to roster these backup quarterbacks and be aggressive on waivers every
26:43single week getting whatever new backup quarterback is starting.
26:46And I'm just going to build out a QB room like that.
26:50But very, very rarely am I ever going to be in the situation where like my number one quarterback is Jared Goff
26:57and my number four quarterback is, is somebody a little bit further like the Jared Goff to Trevor Lawrence range.
27:03If I had like four guys in there, like I'm probably not going to have any teams like that.
27:10I mean, they're going to be higher or trying to target higher than that, or I'm going to be trying to target
27:17lower than that, depending on where the value is in the quarterback position.
27:21No, I dig that. I dig that a lot.
27:24It's very similar to where I'm trying to get to.
27:27I feel like I, it's really hard for me to pull the trigger on four quarterbacks in the early rounds of a startup like that.
27:35But Hey, like you said, if, if the war and the scoring settings are leaning that way, go for it.
27:42Jose, what about you, man? How are you a Ross evaluating this?
27:46Yeah. I think based on what Cooper is saying, kind of to build off of that, when he was mentioning, like having
27:53four, even if you're talking about everybody in the league, trying to get three startable usable quarterbacks, there's still not enough starting quarterbacks in the league.
28:01So it becomes a scenario where I kind of go based on like, what is my quarterback room, right?
28:07Like I need something very stable. And then if the quarterback too, is way more of like an uncertainty where you're filling
28:14in guys, I have come around to even in dynasty best ball, and especially in best ball, where you in season will
28:21be able to find a cheap guy that you can add to the room, whether every year that's Joe Flacco, whether it's,
28:29you know, a, who was the other vet? Brissette that started last year, like in, in, obviously these are not the sexy
28:36names, but if you're talking about that's the fourth addition to my quarterback or replacing the third slash fourth quarterback, because of
28:43injuries, then I do think that that is something that you could do even on, on waivers.
28:48Sometimes you can find players that in terms of a roster construction, if we're just looking at it as a holistic view,
28:56I think backup quarterbacks that have shown the ability to come in to a starting role from, you know, being a backup
29:03are definitely the type of bench players that you want to have.
29:07Like for me, for in dynasty best ball, I don't want to have too many zeros, but if it's like a couple
29:14backup quarterbacks, I'd rather that than like the third string running back or, you know, some other guy that's barely getting any
29:21snaps, barely playing like, you know, any sort of backup that's shown, especially for the quarterbacks that we know, you know, have
29:28injury history or we're worried about, right? Like a Matthew Stafford, obviously, if, if we think, you know, it's, it's going to
29:35be the rookie that starts or, you know, a Jaden Daniels, a Lamar Jackson, whoever that, you know, those sorts of players, their backups are available.
29:43I'm definitely trying to pick them up. Yeah. And I think that's a fine way to approach it too.
29:50It's just, you know, chunkify the season, split it up into chunks, right?
29:54If you're going in the beginning of the season, just get that guy at the beginning of the season, whether that's going
30:01and paying for Jacoby Brissett, who, you know, is probably not going to play all of this season, or maybe that's a
30:08guy like Justin Fields, who could start for Patrick Mahomes to start the season.
30:13I think there's a good way where you can just say, okay, I'm just going to figure it out for the first
30:20few weeks of the season, and I'm going to let chaos take over and I'm going to figure it out as the season goes on.
30:28But if you do approach it that way, you really need to make sure you're banking the assets that you need to
30:35approach that kind of strategy in a way that will give you success.
30:39So what do you guys do when the build, or sorry, how does roster size affect how you want to build your quarterback room here, right?
30:48For a shallower league that's like less than 26 roster size, rostering four quarterbacks is probably going to be a lot harder,
30:55especially if you're trying to shotgun this approach where you're just trying to get a bunch of backups and, you know, let chaos take over here.
31:03So in that kind of league, are you shooting for less and just higher quality ones or, or is it just the
31:10same strategy trying to get four, but just more secure ones here?
31:14Koopa, tell me about this, man. How do you approach it?
31:18It always comes back to how can I best utilize my roster spots?
31:22The shallower you get, the higher quality you need to have in order to have the results into your lineup that you want.
31:29I actually did a series on my podcast, probably about a year ago at this point of how many of each position
31:37do you need in order to reliably get essentially a replacement level?
31:40And so what I mean by that is going into a season, how many wide receiver spots would I need in order
31:48to guarantee that weeks two through 17, I have one top 24 wide receiver result every single week?
31:53How many tight ends do I need? How many running backs?
31:57How many quarterbacks? And for almost every single one, the number boiled down to somewhere between like eight and 12.
32:03So when you are getting into a shallower roster size where you get down to like 25, 24, and you're still starting
32:1111, I don't have eight roster spots to play with where I can reliably say, okay, well, if I just, you know,
32:18slap in eight tight ends, I'm going to get myself a top 12 tight end week almost every single week.
32:24But if I have that expand out to 30, 32, I have one league where we are 39.
32:30And now all of a sudden I can roster a bunch of these guys that are still relevant, but not really guys
32:37that you would think of is like, I'm talking like your Colby Parkinson's, your Davis Allen's, uh, Tyler Higbee's.
32:43I literally just named three Rams. Um, and, and, and you can more or less guess that, okay, one of those guys
32:50is going to do something every single week. And that's all I'm looking for is something, something replaceable out of one of
32:58the multitude of people that I have on my roster.
33:01And so if, when I'm looking at that from the quarterback position, I need to have that huge giant depth line in
33:08all those roster spots in order to be rostering all these backups.
33:12Otherwise, if I'm playing a backup quarterback strategy, I need to know that the rest of my league is not rostering the backups as well.
33:20Because if there's one rebuilder out there that says, screw it, I'm rebuilding, I'm going to roster 12 backup quarterbacks.
33:26Well, when the time comes in the, in the middle of the season and I'm looking for somebody, the best guy that
33:34I'm going to have on waivers is going to be Brady cook.
33:37And we all know how excited we were when Brady cook came in to start a couple of games for the jets
33:45and you won't have available to you. The Joe Flacco's, you won't have available the Jacoby resets.
33:50Um, Hey, you won't even have available like the max bras Mars.
33:54Like I'm just listing people that we were excited to try and have on our teams that were also probably rostered beforehand anyway.
34:01And so you can't rely on that unless your entire league is kind of colluding in that, okay, all of those guys are on waivers.
34:10And then you just need to make sure that you are putting in those big fab bids and understand that's what my fab is for.
34:18I'm not bidding on the random wide receiver who caught two touchdowns last week, uh, because you know, T Higgins was out.
34:25I'm not going to bid on that running back who might have a one B job this week because somebody's hurt.
34:32I need to save that in order to win the quarterback sweepstakes.
34:35And that all goes back into every, how are you spending your value in order to get points onto your team?
34:42Some of your value can come from the fab budget that is part of your, part of your team.
34:48And you understand, Hey, my fab is being allocated to fixing my quarterback position as the season goes on.
34:55And you have to go into the season with that as your plan.
34:59So you don't accidentally put yourself in a situation where it's week 11, Joe Flacco is going to be the starter for
35:06the Browns for the rest of the season. And you don't have any money to go and get them because that's the
35:13time where you blow everything because now, you know, you have a starter for the rest of the season.
35:19Yeah, I agree with that. Right. I mean, when you're in a shallower league, the waivers are usually more plentiful and because
35:26of it's a shallower league, people are trying to, you know, roster construct in ways that they can have as few quarterbacks
35:33as possible because they know those roster spots are so precious and that they can use them for, you know, other wide
35:41receivers or tight ends or running backs that kind of fill those flex spots.
35:45So I really agree with that there. But Jose, what about for you, man?
35:50It doesn't matter much. Like does the quality of the quarterback come into play here when you're in a shallower league?
35:56Are you looking for, you know, like a more top tier guy so you can kind of lock in one of those
36:04spots and then, you know, play a little bit more shallower for that, that super flex or QB two spot, or is it just the same approach?
36:12No, I mean, I think overall, it always depends on who your quarterback's two is.
36:17Like if we're talking about the value is king, you don't also want to over index into value because even though it's
36:24super flex and you want four quarterbacks, three quarterbacks, whatever your number that you're going with is at the end of the day, you can only start two.
36:33So if you have like three or four dudes that are, you know, way up in value or two or three guys,
36:41it's like you're, you do end up leaving a guy that's scoring 20 points on the bench.
36:46Like I'm sure there'd be a better use for that roster spot and that value in general.
36:52So I think it all comes down to like how and who the names are, right?
36:57How you feel about them going into the season.
37:00If I feel very secure about my quarterback one, I have a Josh Allen, for example, right?
37:05The rest of the quarterbacks are, I can very much feel okay with them being secure quarterback twos.
37:11And even some of these fringe guys, if we're talking about smaller rosters, I do think that then is that time where
37:18I'm not trying to play the quarterback, the backup quarterback carousel as much.
37:22I'm more trying to like use those rosters bots in other ways, right?
37:27Like if we're talking about it's super flex, but also there's small benches, I'm not trying to hoard those backup quarterbacks as much in that situation.
37:35I'm maybe a more, if I have a JD Daniels, maybe I'm trying to have Mariotta on my bench.
37:41So I don't have to play that. Maybe I'm trying to get in ahead of that.
37:46If somebody's, you know, doesn't value Mariotta, he's sitting on someone's bench and you can go trade for him for, for fab
37:53before the fab suit six happen or fab in like a fourth round pick, like trying to make those moves to insulate yourself.
38:01So the backups you have are for your own team.
38:04Um, I don't mind doing that, follower rosters and I'm definitely, um, adjusting my, my way of handling the quarterback position.
38:11No, I, I think we're, we're hitting the nail on the head here.
38:15And we kind of already talked about how to handle a deep league here, right?
38:20Where you can kind of take a shotgun approach where you have more spots.
38:25You can kind of use those spots to roster or allocate accordingly to those quarterbacks.
38:29So let's just keep moving here. And Kupa, I feel like you've already answered this one in a way, but we're going
38:37to ask it in a different way. And the question here is how much do you value quarterback job security and a dynasty best ball league?
38:45And I guess the question I really want to get more to here is how would you roster construct around one of
38:52these elite QB ones, like a Josh Allen, a Drake may, maybe even if you want to throw like Joe burrow in
38:59there and like a six touchdown, six point touchdown league, something like that.
39:03Like if you have one of those guys on your team, does it change the way that you're approaching this at all?
39:11Or is it just a very similar approach here where you're still trying to get to those four?
39:16Or do you feel like maybe you can get by with a little bit less because you can count on him in that QB one spot so frequently?
39:25When I am looking at a job security, just in general, I absolutely value a quarterback that I am supremely confident will have a job the following year.
39:35If I, and I will also value if I'm rebuilding a round one quarterback, a lot of Ty Simpson who gets drafted.
39:42And I know they are going to have a starting role at some point in their career.
39:47I know for sure that, I mean, it might take them two, three years from Matt Stafford to retire, but somebody like
39:54Ty Simpson, if I'm rebuilding is absolutely somebody that I want.
39:58And, and the reason is quarterback is one of the hardest positions.
40:02And you know, from lineup leagues is one of the hardest positions to get.
40:06If anybody else is looking at their quarterback room and they're sitting there with three, because as we were saying, there's not
40:13even enough quarterbacks for every single team in the league to have three quarterbacks.
40:18It is so hard to pry a quarterback off of another roster.
40:22You usually are having to overpay for them an absurd amount.
40:25And the only way I find that I can realistically get it done is through draft picks.
40:31So I absolutely want the guys that are stable.
40:34If I'm coming out of a startup, I'm always trying to get the people that are stable.
40:39And then if I have a quarterback one, I'm still targeting four, but it might change my, my threshold for, okay, how
40:46badly do I need to make sure that my quarterback four is somebody that is reliable?
40:52And can maybe my quarterback four be more of the waiver wire fodder?
40:56Can it be the, the random Mariota on a couple of weeks and then Joe Flacco on a couple of weeks and,
41:03and then your Brady cook, and then your Chris, a lot of Coon.
41:07And you just jump around between those guys for that quarterback four spot.
41:11But I am always trying to hit four quarterbacks because it's just so hard to get to that in the first place.
41:19Yeah. That makes a ton of sense here. Jose, same question to you, man.
41:23How do you value quarterback job security here? And it does having one of those elite QB ones change how you're constructing your roster around them.
41:31Um, yeah, maybe because I've had Josh Allen and I have him in a lot of fantasy leagues, um, including dynasty best ball ones.
41:39He kind of feels like the only asset, um, you know, and knock on wood, not trying to jinx it, but like
41:46the only quarterback in that tier that you can reliably count on, um, pretty much year in and year out.
41:53I mean, he's probably been the most consistent fantasy asset over the last like five years.
41:58Um, and it's, he's kind of on that Kelsey run where, um, it just, there's no questioning that he's the best quarterback,
42:05whether he has the weapons, whether he doesn't. Um, so I think he's kind of one of the only ones, like if
42:12I have Joe Burrow, even if I have Drake may, like I'm not nearly as confident that I'm always going to get
42:19the QB one play from him or the, the week winning play, uh, from him, right?
42:25Like there's a Joe Burrow can have a year where he throws 50 touchdowns at 5,000 yards and blows, you know, the
42:32QB one numbers by, uh, anybody else by a lot, but that's not something you can really count on.
42:38Um, but, um, like Kupa said, and like I was saying earlier, like if you do have one of those elite assets,
42:45it's just like, um, you know, whether you're using the warp or you're just thinking of it, you know, in a much,
42:52in a more simpler way of like, you know, you only have a certain amount of resources, whether they're, you know, an
42:59almanac, you know, or like beans, like however you want to think about it, you only have a finite amount, right?
43:06Like there's, there is a limit to how much you can have.
43:10If you have, you know, 10 magic beans and Josh Allen, then you don't have as many to go somewhere else.
43:17So you don't want your third or fourth quarterback.
43:20There'll be somebody who's also a lot like, obviously if somehow you can finagle your league and you have Josh Allen and
43:27Joe Burrow, and then like a really solid third quarterback, like, uh, Jared Goff, then of course you want to do that.
43:34But I think the ability to do that in a lot of times is much harder said than done.
43:40And like Kupa said, like most of the time, the only thing people want for quarterbacks, he's either a quarterback back in
43:47return, or they want a draft picks. So it's, it's much harder to do, but yeah, if my quarterback one is very solid, then I'm okay.
43:56The only other situation like that is like, let's say I have three guys that are kind of all in the same level.
44:03Maybe they're not any of them, like the most magnificent, but like if you have a Jared Goff, a Dak Prescott and
44:10like a Trevor Lawrence, then whoever the fourth guy is, I'm much more willing for that to be like a, like, I
44:17don't even know what the Sean Watson, uh, uh, should do or saying there's like that sort of lower level player.
44:24If the three guys that I have, like, um, I'm very confident that if Jared Goff has a dud game, the other
44:31two guys will, you know, I mean, obviously anything can happen and they all line up and they all put up five
44:38points and you know, whatever, but that's more less likely to happen if we're playing the game of chance when we're, um,
44:46you know, talking about, uh, fantasy football. Yeah. When you were talking about magic beans, I just imagined the office episode here
44:53where they're handing out, uh, incentive bonuses and they're putting beans on people's faces.
44:57I imagine that's what you do when you're going through your, your trade block and just 10 beans for Josh Allen.
45:04Exactly. Yeah. I mean, what, you know, what, however you want to quantify the, the values of these players.
45:10I mean, whatever helps you, you know, everybody's a different type of learner here.
45:15So yeah, no beans, uh, definitely beans for me.
45:18Um, I need to give me some more magic beans here.
45:21So before we move on here and get into the tight ends guys, how much do you think the quarterback landscape changes
45:28from this year to next year with this projected strong quarterback class of 2027 coming in?
45:34Do you, I hear a lot going on the airwaves now about going and getting this year's Malik Willis, right?
45:40So like trying to go get a Mac Jones or a similar backup like that, who has shown promise in the past.
45:47And with the idea that they're going to move on next season and get into a job, a starting rotation, I guess
45:54someone similar like that would be like a Kyler Murray, right?
45:58Who's kind of playing for his comeback career here so that he can kind of get a job next year.
46:04Is that kind of playing into any of your guys's, how you're building your rosters this year, especially when we're talking about
46:11job security, or again, are you just valuing these guys a lot lower?
46:16And so maybe they're just not on your teams because of the reason that they may not have that job security going
46:23into next year with such a competitive market and this influx of, of rookie quarterbacks coming in.
46:28Is there any consideration to this? You know, I'm going to call it a phenomenon, but it's probably not appropriately named, but
46:35would you guys give any consideration to that and how you're constructing your, your best ball rosters this year?
46:42Koopa, what do you think, man? If I'm rebuilding, I'm more inclined to have one of those guys.
46:47So it, especially if I'm, if I'm somebody, I know I'm not one of the top teams.
46:53I'm not going to be competing. Like Mac Jones is perfect.
46:56He's a zero every single week. So I don't need to worry about him getting points unless Brock Purdy gets hurt.
47:03And then all of a sudden he's starting people want him and I'm going to get the bonus value of whatever that
47:10team is thinking, okay, I'm going to be able to get Mac Jones.
47:15I'm going to start them for these couple of weeks or potentially the rest of the season.
47:20And then he's going to be worth something come next off season because he's going to go to a team and get a starting job.
47:28I prefer not to bank on. I know next season, Mac Jones is going to go to another team and get a
47:35starting job because who knows what he's going to look like when he plays as a backup in San Francisco.
47:42We've seen it once before, but we've also seen it go horribly wrong for, or for people too.
47:48And when you get to next season, it might be, yeah, he's on a team and he's getting the, the Kirk cousins treatment.
47:55The, he, he gets signed to a team. You're like, man, he's going to be the starting quarterback.
48:01And then they draft a quarterback with first pick overall.
48:04And it's like, well, I know he's not the starting quarterback there come next year.
48:09So, and he might not even be the starting quarterback when you get to playoffs that season, like he might already be replaced.
48:17So now you're scrambling to solve this quarterback problem.
48:19When a year ago you thought you were, you were potentially overpaying a little bit to have it fixed.
48:26So I don't want to be in on those guys on contenders and his rebuilders.
48:30They're my trap pieces. And I've talked about it before in all sorts of places.
48:35I love sending a trap trade where I'm giving somebody, someone that I'm pretty confident that in 90% of scenarios, yeah, you're
48:42winning in the short term, but in the longterm it all falls apart for you.
48:47And so I am those kinds of players are my essentially trap players that I am totally fine sending away because I
48:54think I'm trapping somebody else with a ticking time bomb.
48:58Gotcha. Yeah, no, I love it. Jose, you have anything you want to add on there, man?
49:03Or do you agree with all that? Yeah. I mean, you've activated my trap card basically is what people are saying here.
49:10But in terms of what I think- Xodia, trap cards.
49:14Who are you, Jose? The only time that comes into a huge play is if I'm trying to trade or make that
49:21move, if I can do so for something that I feel more secure.
49:25If Mac Jones is in the similar value bucket as somebody else who I feel more confident in, then I'm definitely just
49:32making that play and letting someone else take that gamble in terms of like, Mac Jones and Matthew Stafford probably aren't valued the same way.
49:40You need somebody a little bit higher than Mac Jones, but a lot of people are out on Stafford and he's more
49:47likely to have a starting job next year than some of these guys like a Malik Willis and stuff like that, right?
49:54I mean, yes, he's very old and all those things, but at the end of the day, like he has the contract and he's going to play.
50:03At least you think so, right? Like, and you know the level that he's going to play at, which is another thing.
50:10It's like, Mac Jones, like Kupa was saying, going to play with the, I don't know, the Browns next year or somewhere like that.
50:18Like who knows how that ends up playing out, right?
50:21So I definitely think there's a way to leverage that and kind of play into people's hopes, especially if like that's what,
50:28I think that's what's good about paying attention to a lot of different, you know, like you said, people out there talking,
50:36like that's what people are saying in season, like, oh, Mac Jones, he's getting all the hype on the podcast.
50:42Like, you know, you can capitalize on that because obviously, you know, other people are also listening to that.
50:48Yeah. A hundred percent. I'm totally there with it.
50:51I heard Scott Connor say recently on one of his Best Ball Dynasty episodes talking about running backs, but he said, I
50:58only care about what these guys can do for me this year.
51:02It's what they're giving me this year in terms of production.
51:06And it was, you know, outside of like the top four running backs, like, or maybe top five, it didn't matter.
51:12Like they were all kind of in the same bucket to him.
51:16It was just, what can you give me this year?
51:20And I'm not banking on you outside of that.
51:23And I feel like that's kind of similar here with quarterback, especially with the way the market values quarterbacks and not our market.
51:30I'm talking about the NFL market where they need them to prove themselves now or very soon, or they're moving on.
51:37We've seen so many guys get cut after getting extended to, uh, you know, being one of them and, you know, we, Deshaun Watson.
51:45And that's why we see all these retread guys kind of come back around.
51:49So like, I feel like it's really like outside of the top 15, top 18 quarterbacks here.
51:55It's just out. You're only buying them for what they can give you this season.
51:59So just allocate those receipt resources accordingly. Everyone out there, make sure if you have those guys beyond the wide receiver, sorry,
52:07beyond quarterback 18, that they're not a concrete plan for you going into future seasons.
52:11Imagine buying Geno Smith last year, going over to the Raiders thinking he's the starting quarterback for the Raiders for the next few years.
52:19And now is Geno Smith even in the league next year?
52:23He's, and he's not on the team that you expect him to be on.
52:27So just some parting thoughts here as we move on from quarterbacks, we're going to take a quick break here and we'll
52:34be back with you guys on the other side to talk about tight ends.
52:39And we're live from the living room as Doug eyes up the match day spread.
52:44He's reaching for the Buffalo wing. Perfect. Hang on.
52:47What's this? Oh, he's going for a can of Pepsi too.
52:50Incredible. What a finish. Sensational combination. Look at the delight on his face.
52:55There's no doubt about it. It just tastes better.
52:57Match days deserve Pepsi. Food deserves Pepsi. Grab a pack of Pepsi Zero Sugar for today's match.
53:03It's poetry in motion. I like gum. I chew it all the time every day.
53:08And lately I've been trying this underbrush from Nathan and Sons.
53:11It's remineralizing chewing gum, basically an oral care routine in gum form.
53:15You brush in the morning and at night, but after lunch, there's a big gap where most of us do nothing for our teeth.
53:23Underbrush is made for that moment. Chew it for five to 10 minutes, spit it out, move on, or keep chewing if you like the feel of it.
53:32It's made with hydroxyapatite, the same mineral your enamel is made from as well as natural saps like mastic and spruce.
53:39So it has that firmer, really satisfying chew. To say it's all natural would be an understatement because they make it themselves
53:46from scratch in Northern California, where the biggest, best trees are.
53:50I'm so glad I found this company when it's only a few years old and the team is literally making packing and shipping gum every day.
53:58So if you want a simple daily upgrade for your teeth that tastes great, check out Underbrush.
54:04Order now at NathanandSons.com. That is NathanandSons.com. Try it now.
54:07All right. Welcome back. Let's get right into it, guys.
54:10Kind of a similar formula here. What is your process for evaluating a roster build, particularly for tight ends?
54:16Kupa, I imagine it's going to be a similar answer for you here, and it's going to start off with warp graphs.
54:23But give us your thoughts. For sure. So I mean, I can boil it down to what the warp graph is going
54:30to look like with the various tight end premiums.
54:33When you have a tight end premium, that's like 0.75 or above.
54:37So you got 1.75 PPR for tight ends. The difference between the top tier guys and the lower tier guys is going to be pretty drastic.
54:46And so you need to take that into account of, I cannot punt the top tier of tight ends.
54:52I have to have one of them if I want to be able to keep up with the rest of the league at that position.
55:00It's fine if you're saying, okay, you know what?
55:03I'm going to punt tight end because I'm going to have the strongest running back wide receiver and quarterback groups.
55:09That's fine. We all know that you can have a weak position and still be a top team in the league.
55:16But if you haven't gone into it and said, hey, I'm going to punt tight end and make sure I fill all
55:23the other ones, then you're going to end up being that team that just can't quite get over the hump.
55:30And so I absolutely need to, in a high tight end premium, have one of those top guys.
55:36But if I have no tight end premium, if we're talking like half PPR, there's zero tight end premium whatsoever.
55:42The difference between the number one tight end and like four of the tight ends from tight end 15 through 25 is
55:49so minimal on a week to week basis that I am going to just completely pass on the top tier of tight ends and just go out.
55:58I'm going to be getting myself the Hunter Henry's, the Dalton Schultz's, the Tyler Higby's, like AJ Barner's, like AJ Barner is
56:05even pushing a little bit better than he was previously.
56:08But I'm going to be trying for those players.
56:11And those are going to be what I have on my team is my tight end room.
56:17And I'm just going to get four or five of those guys know that I can match the number one guy on most weeks.
56:25Sure. There's going to be a week that Trey McBride explodes and he gets eight receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
56:32I'm not going to match that out of the guys that I listed, but his average week where he's getting five receptions
56:39for 60 yards, I can get really darn close, maybe within a point or two, almost every single week out of just a stable of tight ends.
56:48Yeah. It's, it's so easy to do right. Frankensteining a tight end.
56:51I think that's why people stream tight ends in, you know, regular season redraft formats.
56:56It's because they know that they can kind of put together a tight end two or tight end three season here.
57:03What about you, Jose? How are you evaluating a roster build for tight ends here coming in?
57:09Yeah. I think even more so than quarterbacks, just because there is such a wide variety of scoring formats and, and tight
57:16end premiums and how much that plays into it.
57:19I completely agree with what Kupa saying. I mean, I think it makes obviously the most sense.
57:24Like we always say, like when you go into the new league, look at that chart, what does that do?
57:31Maybe you haven't played in a full tight end premium point, you know, or maybe in a full point tight end premium
57:38on top of, you know, a full PPR, right?
57:41So now tight ends are getting two points per reception.
57:44Maybe you've never played in a league like that.
57:47And so you're not really aware of what that does to, you know, the scarcity and, and the importance of those kinds
57:54of top end guys in terms of just like an overall tight end build.
57:58If I have one of those guys and I'm really trying to not invest very much into anything else, obviously you want
58:06to have backups and you want to have, you know, people in case you get an injury, but even more so than tight end.
58:13If I have a Trey McBride, you know, Brock Bowers, Tyler Warren, one of those guys, I'm not really trying to have much behind them.
58:21If anything, I'm, I'm mostly trying to pick up all those old crusty guys like Kelsey, even though everybody dislikes him, whatever,
58:29all the things like he continues to get it done.
58:32Mark Andrews from time to time, like you don't need Mark Andrews if you have Brock Bowers, you know, but if Mark
58:39Andrews can fill a week where back Bowers has a bad week or, you know, pop into the flex with a 10
58:46points because it's, you know, this tight end premium or he catches two touchdowns, like whatever, like all those sorts of people,
58:53Schultz, Ferguson, like any of these, you know, real low air and barely tied in one guys.
58:59If I have one of these premier, you know, assets at the position.
59:03Yeah, for sure. If you went into last year's season with Dallas Goddard, Juwan Johnson, and like a, I don't know, a
59:10Dalton Kincaid, all of those guys were pretty low value.
59:13Dalton Kincaid was probably a little more highly valued, maybe like a ninth round startup pick something last year, but those other
59:20guys were, were a lot lower in, in the ADP startups there.
59:24Those guys would have got you 18.2 fantasy points per game last year, putting up 312 in a half point tight end premium, half point PPR league.
59:33And I think that's exactly what we're talking about here is if you can kind of just Frankenstein those guys, you only
59:40needed three tight ends to accomplish that. That would have been, you know, right behind Trey McBride who had like 340 points in that kind of format.
59:49And you only would have needed three bodies to do it.
59:53Obviously you don't know who those three are going to be for the 2026 season.
59:57So you just kind of take your best guess here and roll into it.
60:02But I think that there is probably a little more freedom for that to happen.
60:07Now I'm going to jump down here to this.
60:10How does the trend for the much discussed NFL personnel or formations talking about heavier personnel, 12 personnel, 13 personnel, how does
60:17that change the roster construction for our best ball teams?
60:20And I'll, I'll lead off here saying, I looked at the warp graphs here for the past three years.
60:26And if you look at the gap between tight ends and wide receivers, it's shrinking from 2023 to 2024 to 2025.
60:33So much so to where you're in a full point tight end premium.
60:37Once you get past like wide receiver, 20 tight ends are scoring more points than, than those other wide receivers here, or
60:44they, sorry, they have a higher war than they do their wide receiver counterparts.
60:49I only expect that to kind of continue here.
60:52How are we going to address this and capitalize this?
60:55Or, or if we don't capitalize it in points, maybe we capitalize it on the hype of it.
61:01So Kupa, give me, give me your thoughts here on this personnel trends, how the NFL is going to be changing their offenses.
61:08And what does it mean for, for us in these best ball rosters?
61:13Is there a way that we can kind of capture these points on, on these lower tight ends and just have more
61:20of them versus these high end ones? Yeah. I think that the number two tight ends that we're getting a, out of
61:27a lot of these teams are going to be our replacements for the wide receiver three slash four.
61:33And so a lot of those lower tier wide receivers where we're like hoping that, you know, they're going to, they're going
61:40to have a peak game of four receptions and 60 yards and a touchdown is now going to be what we're hoping
61:47we get out of these second tight ends. And so it's just a changing of who is it that we're actually rostering
61:54at the back end of our rosters. And it's not so much that I think that a lot of those guys are
62:01going to replace the, Oh, I'm building out my tight end room based on making sure that I have, you know, my
62:08Davis Allen's and my Elijah Higgins and my Darnell Washington's and those guys.
62:13But those guys are the ones that I may be relying on to be enough of that stable that I'm reliably filling a flex on a week.
62:21And so the, when you combine that with, okay, I'm have some of these guys with some of these wide receivers, with
62:28some of these other running backs, then all of a sudden, now I have a different look to my team.
62:35And a lot of these tight end twos are guys that you can find on waivers in the off season.
62:41You can take chances on, okay, these, I can rebuild a team to be more competitive without the rest of my league
62:49being aware of what it is that I'm going to do.
62:52And I can get so many of these guys for free to put myself in a position where I'm going to be
62:59getting the points that I need when the season comes.
63:02So is that going to be changing how you're allocating roster spots here when you're building a team?
63:08Are you going to be assigning more of your bench spots for these tight end twos?
63:13Like, are you going to be going after, you know, Charlie Kohler and, and these other backup tight ends that you're talking
63:21about here and, and giving yourself maybe 10 or 12 spots of your 30 man roster to roster these guys.
63:27I'm only going to be doing that in the sense of if it happens that way.
63:32So I hate being very prescriptive of how my roster is going to be as much as let me figure out what
63:39my roster is going to be based on what the league is allowing me to do.
63:45And so if I'm sitting there with a roster and I'm like, man, I really don't like the players that I have in my bench.
63:53I don't see how they're going to have more than a 50% chance of getting one week usable in my lineup this upcoming season.
64:00I'm going to the waiver wire and going, who do I think can potentially get me two or three weeks that they're filling in a flex spot?
64:09And this off season, the answer to a lot of that is a number two tight end on a team.
64:16Mm-hmm it's it. And so that's the kind of guy that I'm pivoting to, but the, the reason that it's nice to
64:23think that way of not being prescriptive and trying to change, Hey, what is the number of tight ends?
64:29I need to adjust that based on the, the, the NFL is when we get to the season and it's going to
64:36happen sometime, probably in the next three to four years.
64:39Oh, all the defenses got really heavy. And so all the teams are going back to 11 personnel.
64:45Well, now I'm not being prescriptive where I'm like, well, in this team, I have 12 tight ends.
64:51That's what I need to do. And instead I'm like, I just need the best flex player.
64:56The best flex player to me is the wide receiver three that is on the, the Atlanta Falcons this week.
65:03All right. That's who I'm getting. And so being able to not force myself into a bucket and just be like, okay,
65:10who am I most confident in that they're going to have a couple of weeks that they have enough snaps.
65:17They have the opportunity to get four. I always say four receptions, 60 yards and a touchdown because that comes out to
65:2416 points in the standard PPR league, 16 points in, in any standard PPR league is almost always a top end flex result.
65:31Yeah. And so I'm aiming for, do I think they can do that?
65:35If so, I want them on my team. If I think that they can do that multiple times, then I definitely want them on my team.
65:44Yeah. Super wise. I love it. I think we can sum that up as just when, when your teammates zig, you want to zag.
65:52That is honestly one of my favorite mottos here to live by and play me any kind of, of dynasty, especially when
65:59it comes, it's one of my favorite things to do when a startup is read the room, figure out what teams are
66:06doing early and plan my draft around countering that meta inside the draft.
66:10And it's, it's a much easier to do than you think it is.
66:14Once you have that knack for it, going back to the original question here, Jose, how is the NFL personnel information trained
66:21trends changing how you're going to be approaching your tight end room for your best ball teams?
66:27Yeah. I mean, I think the NFL is definitely a copycat league.
66:31I mean, we've seen it with these different trends.
66:34We'll see how, if this one sticks because they don't always all stick teams try to do this.
66:40And then it's all of a sudden, like it doesn't work.
66:43They can't find the right tight ends and they go back to what they're known.
66:48Some of them are just like old crusty dudes that don't want to change things up, but we'll see how it goes for now.
66:56It does seem like that's the trend. I think to not hit on too much of the same things that Cooper said,
67:03because I mean, I think they all are pretty logical and make a lot of sense.
67:08I think one thing it could open up is if it sticks for at least a couple of seasons, it would open
67:15up more players to trade, not just more players to pick up and have on the end of your bench.
67:22But if these tight ends end up having a little bit more value, it just adds more pieces to trade, more pieces
67:29to pick up off the wire wire, different construction of rosters.
67:32So I think it's only, it's only a good thing for the NFL.
67:37Like in terms of fantasy stylistically, but I'm still not so confident that it's going to stick for the longterm just because,
67:44you know, it didn't work for the Seahawks doesn't mean it's going to work for everybody else.
67:49But I think it is a breath of fresh air, right?
67:53The tight end, I think for, that's why Trident Premium was invented because the position just seemed to not matter very much whatsoever.
68:00And so, you know, if it's mattering more in the NFL, that means you have to take a note of that when
68:07you're playing fantasy and make it more relevant and adjust to it.
68:11And if you're like one of the people that's up on that and you're first to react and you can be, you
68:18know, the first one on the way required to pick up these guys to get them thrown into trades for the cheap and those sorts of things.
68:27Yeah. That makes a lot of sense. And yeah, I'm with you.
68:31I don't, I don't think it's going to stick here for the longterm.
68:35I would be really surprised. I think Kupa is right on the nose as well when he's saying that the defenses are going to get bigger.
68:44It's just a matter of when, not a matter of if.
68:47So here guys with your roster builds, how does a shallower league affect how you want to build out these tight end rooms versus a deeper league here?
68:56Are you more inclined to index heavier into these elite tight ends here on a, on a shallower build, or maybe you're
69:03just dedicating less roster spots in general to them?
69:06Kupa, give me your thoughts on this, man. Yeah.
69:09I mean, it's still going to come back to warp in terms of, do I want to go for the elite of the elite?
69:17I'm talking the, the Brock Bowers, the Trey McBride, um, even the, like if he was uninjured, like the George Kittle, um,
69:24that those kinds of players is always going to be, do I have the tight end premium to justify the difference in points?
69:32But if I have a really shallow league, I might not be willing to go as deep before I start taking tight ends.
69:39Like I might start with, okay, I need to make sure I get a Jake Ferguson and a Hunter Henry and a
69:46Dalton Schultz just because I need some level of baseline.
69:49I know they aren't going to be straight up zero on any given week, but if I have a league that is
69:57super duper deep and I know that, okay, I just need a couple guys to pop out.
70:02That's where the, the Davis Allen comes in. That's where Elijah Higgins comes in.
70:07Um, that's where Greg Dulcich has kind of taken off in Miami more recently.
70:11So he's not a good name anymore. Um, but it, a Cole commit like guys like that, where there is a clear
70:18roadblock in front of them doing anything that is going to be really high, but there's not a huge roadblock in front
70:25of them being normal for a week or two.
70:28And that's the kind of thing that I'm willing to invest in on.
70:33If we got to the point that I have so many roster spots that I can invest in that.
70:39Yeah. Jose, what about you, man? How are you approaching a shallower build?
70:43Yeah. I mean, I, I think, I mean, I, I mean, this is very too obvious, but I mean, I think there's
70:50no build anywhere, no matter if it's like 10 bench spots that I don't want the elite assets at tight end.
70:57I think it is the most differentiating spot when you are going into any matchup and you have one of these, the
71:04premier top guys, it feels just in a different way.
71:07It gives you a confidence, um, because they're elite, they're league winners, but weak winners, any week, especially if you're going up
71:14against that guy that punted the, you know, and it's starting some of these guys that Cooper is talking about.
71:21Obviously if you built the team in, um, the correct way, like Cooper is talking about, then, you know, you, your wide
71:28receivers and running backs are the way that you're counteracting that.
71:31I think too many people though, sometimes punt tight end this Cooper was saying, and then don't have a plan of where they're making up for that.
71:40Right? Like they're just, Oh, I didn't get any of the top five guys.
71:45So I'm going to punt it, but they're not being intentional with what they're doing, whether the roster size is big or small.
71:52It definitely in small ones, uh, like in smaller leagues, I'm not trying to, um, spend a lot of, of these, um,
71:59stuff pots on these guys now in terms of like how Cooper was saying, it is switching where maybe the backend of
72:06your roster, you can have some more of them if instead of, you know, the wide receiver for like, uh, I don't
72:14know, a Jalen Tolbert from the Cowboys or something, some guy like that, that's like, okay, you're hoping that he has that
72:21magical game and you switch over to the rostering tight ends because they're becoming a little bit more impactful than, then sure.
72:28I could see that, um, trend switching, but I mean, in terms of pure out roster construction, when I'm looking at it,
72:35I don't want to have more than three or four roster tight ends at a time, really in most leagues.
72:41I mean, especially if the benches are short. Okay.
72:44Yeah, no, that makes a ton of sense. While we were talking about this, I came up with another question here and
72:52I'm curious on you guys' thoughts to these, how do you value these young promising tight ends, but they don't have a
72:59clear path to production kind of anywhere in the near future here, right?
73:03I mean, someone we could have called this last year was Ben Sennett, um, or more so.
73:08I think that that guy this year is like a Terrence Ferguson or even like this rookie class is pretty rich with
73:16these tight ends and Raritan, Claire, Delp, Jolie. And then you have these other guys too, that are kind of being thrust
73:23into starting roles, but we don't know for sure that they're going to have them like a Chico Cuonco or a Gunner Helm.
73:30How are you valuing these guys in your builds going into the season?
73:34Are you trying to avoid them because you, because of the ambiguity or are you trying to, uh, target them in, in a selective way?
73:42And if so, what kind of build are you including them in for your best balls?
73:48So Kupa, give me your thoughts on this first man.
73:51They fit a role depending on what, what it is that I'm trying to build.
73:56So like your guys going into the rookies, like your, your, your Raritan, your Claire, your Delp, like those guys clear.
74:02They, they have a problem in front of them for them to being a number one tight end, but I see that
74:10they have a pretty good shot at building into a tight end to roll.
74:14So on a team where I am saying, I'm going to piece together a bunch of tight end twos in order to build out my tight end position.
74:23Maybe I have enough roster spots that I can just roster 12 tight end twos and hope that at least one of them pops on any given week.
74:32Those guys are going to fill some of those tight end two spots for me.
74:37And if they end up doing better, okay, now that can roll into a situation where, well, now I have a tight
74:44end one on a team that I was expecting to only have tight end twos.
74:49So now that means I can cut some of the riffraff that I have of those tight end twos, re rebuild my
74:56team towards leaner at tight end and fill out maybe a wide receiver has fallen apart.
75:01And so I need to roster more wide receivers or quarterback fell apart.
75:06I need more quarterbacks and allow myself to adjust my roster construction based on one of these guys spiking up in value.
75:13But where I'm going to value them right now is what is their role?
75:17And every single one of the guys that you, that you mentioned at the beginning there, it's, they're a tight end two on their team.
75:25I'm going to value them as a tight end two.
75:29And if I get lucky and that they become a tight end one, now I'm going to re-kajigger all of these different
75:36players on my team based on the fact that I now have somebody better than I was expecting.
75:42And that could also just be, Hey, now I just trade them away because I'm comfortable with all the other tight end twos that I have.
75:50And he's got a value spike and I can get better points out of trading them for a different position.
75:57What about you, Jose? Are these guys that you're targeting on your best ball teams?
76:01And do you see things similarly here to Kupa?
76:04Like if you're a contending team or these guys that you're actively targeting, or is it more so like, um, if, if
76:11you, if they hit, then like Kupa saying, then you can kind of build around them when they do hit.
76:18But it, to me, it seems counter counterproductive to kind of roster these guys on a best ball team where you're trying
76:25to contend and making room for them, especially on, you know, a shallower roster here, it might be hard, harder to do.
76:32So give me your thoughts here, Jose, what do you think about this, man?
76:37Yeah. I mean, I think tight end in terms of the NFL is one of the harder positions to predict when someone's
76:44going to break out if they're not coming in as like a bonafide stud.
76:48Like, um, I'm trying to remember when it was one of the last times that we had a player who was not
76:56already known to be the, you know, a top tier talent, um, breakout and kind of, you know, uh, shake up the, the tight end landscape.
77:04I'm having a difficulty remembering one. I, I, I, I, like, I guess even McBride really, I mean, he was not really
77:11expected to do what he did, but kind of came out of nowhere.
77:15Right. Um, I mean, but wasn't he highly drafted and he have a pretty, pretty good college profile.
77:21I know. Keep talking. Probably Laporta is the most recent, I would say that like in terms of our rookie drafts, he was going in the third round.
77:30Okay. So like, I, I just have a hard time trying to make a bet.
77:35Like you, you, like we've been talking about, you only have a finite more, um, at least with my own way of
77:42analyzing and looking at players, I feel like I can spot a wide receiver or running back or, or, you know, a
77:49quarterback, like that's going to have more opportunity or more predictable future than these tight ends.
77:54Obviously, if you have a chance, um, to get them for cheap or thrown in that, you know, albeit, you don't want
78:02to miss out in case, you know, uh, Raritan or Delp or Joy or something or, or the next, you know, crazy, um, tight end breakout.
78:10But, um, in overall, especially as a contender, these are not the type of like dart throws that I want to be
78:17taking, you know, time and, and resources to, to pick up, uh, and roster.
78:22Yeah. I think for me, right. These guys are going to find my way on.
78:27They're going to find their way onto my teams.
78:29If this is a deeper league here, you know, more than 27, like in a, we play in a lot of 30 man leagues, Jose for best ball.
78:39Those are the kinds of teams where these guys are going to find their way on here.
78:44And I'm going to be targeting them when I don't have those elite assets, like Koopa is saying, right?
78:50I, I want a lot of these dart throws on these guys.
78:54I have the roster space to do it right in a start 10.
78:58I only have to allocate or start 11, 22 roster spots for my contending roster, right?
79:04Those are the guys that I'm expecting to fill those roles more.
79:07If I have more players that bleed over those 22 spots.
79:11Awesome. I'm doing great. I'm doing really good. But other than that, I have eight other spots that I can kind of,
79:18I, you know, flex build with, right? And, and if I'm not strong at tight end, these are the kinds of guys
79:25that I kind of want to put on my roster here where I can let them roll into a season, see how they do.
79:33I mean, you can even take them into an off season.
79:37You know, a lot of our best ball leagues expand the rosters in the off season.
79:42So you can kind of get through the rookie draft to see what the summer looks like for these guys.
79:48And then you can make your decisions going into the season.
79:52So yeah, I think we did a really great job here, guys, both on quarterbacks and tight ends.
79:58Are there any final thoughts that haven't been said here on tight ends that you guys want to get out before we start getting into the outro here?
80:07Um, I would say that the fantasy community continues to undervalue cow pits.
80:11So you should go buy cow pits. You're gross.
80:14I hate you. My, my piece of advice is the fantasy community community undervalues basically all tight ends that are not the top two tight ends.
80:22And so you can, if you have any amount of tight end premium, you can oftentimes find point values in just about anywhere up and down the position.
80:31Yeah. A hundred percent. I found too, I'm getting just finishing up a startup draft here.
80:37People as best ball dynasty is becoming more and more popular.
80:40People are becoming very in tune to what a successful team looks like and they're executing their drafts accordingly.
80:46Right? So tearing down trading back is becoming harder and harder to do in these startups.
80:51So I found people still aren't valuing the, the later rounds between, you know, 12 and 15 appropriately.
80:57And there's a lot of production in those rounds, mainly in tight ends too.
81:02If you're in a tight end premium draft, like there's going to be a lot of guys going in that round.
81:09My strategy was because nobody wanted to trade back with me.
81:12Everybody wanted to trade back. So I was trading up, but as I was trading up, I was consolidating and building my
81:19roster strong into these running backs and wide receivers, knowing I was going to punt fully on tight end.
81:25But in these trades where I'm trading for first and second and third round picks and startup drafts, as I'm trading up
81:33for them on the backend, I'm also consolidating my 20th round picks into 15s and my 17s into 14s.
81:39And so the illusion that I'm giving these people is that I'm trading up, but I'm also with a very specific strategy
81:46in mind, consolidating these backend picks so that I can just shotgun approach all these tight ends.
81:51And I can go and get Goddard. I can get Juwan Johnson.
81:55I can go and get Evan Ingram. I can, you know, like I'm just taking all these guys that are going to
82:02score points and I'm just Frankensteining a tight end one onto the team.
82:07So just want to throw that out there. Maybe that's something that you guys can use in your drafts.
82:13If they're, you're drafting with savvy players, I'm zigging when they're zagging.
82:17I'm trying to find ways to outsmart my opponents here.
82:20So take that report back. Let me know how it goes with you guys.
82:24Other than that, let's get out of here, guys.
