Amon-Ra St. Brown

PositiveProjection27:25

Amon-Ra St. Brown has graduated to the elite tier of wide receivers. Matt Harmon argues that St. Brown is not just a slot merchant and is capable of competing with top-tier receivers like Puka Nacua and Ja'Marr Chase. His production is bolstered by a Lions defense that will likely force the offense to play from behind all season.

Insight page
PositiveProjection31:59

Matt Harmon notes that Amon-Ra St. Brown is having a Hall of Fame start to his career and is one of the best wide receivers in football. Harmon suggests this season could be the 'cherry on top' where his elite status becomes obvious to everyone.

Insight page

Brian Robinson

PositiveUsage63:03

Matt Harmon highlights Brian Robinson Jr. as an elite running back and a 'PPR scam' who is legitimately taking wide receiver snaps and running screens, making him the focal point of the Falcons' offense.

Insight page

Brian Thomas Jr.

NegativeRole57:23

Brian Thomas Jr. is currently a boom-bust fantasy play due to his role as a designated X receiver and a nagging shoulder injury that may be limiting his field time. Matt Harmon notes that he may not be a perfect fit for Liam Cohen's scheme, which prioritizes crossing routes over the middle, an area where other roster players are currently more effective.

Insight page

Brock Bowers

NegativeInjury53:18

Matt Harmon suggests the Raiders should consider sitting Brock Bowers for one more game to ensure he is fully healthy, even if he is an auto-start when active.

Insight page

Bryce Young

PositiveProjection65:01

Bryce Young is showing signs of improvement under new offensive coordinator Brad Idzik, with the Panthers shifting to a more aggressive, downfield passing attack. Harmon notes that Young is playing more like his 'Alabama' self, with increased play-action and pace.

Insight page

Chris Olave

PositiveInjury71:36

Chris Olave popped up on the injury report with a hamstring issue, but it is considered precautionary and not expected to be a problem. Harmon remains very high on Olave's fantasy outlook for the rest of the season.

Insight page

D.J. Moore

PositiveInjury4:51

DJ Moore is expected to be a stud in the Bills offense once healthy. He suffered an apparent AC joint injury in Week 2, which typically carries a one-to-three-week recovery timeline. The team can afford to be patient with his return given their strong start.

Insight page

Dalton Kincaid

PositiveRole5:16

Dalton Kincaid is emerging as a premier fantasy asset, with his route participation increasing toward the 70% mark. Hayden Winks highlights that Kincaid is being targeted even in 13 personnel packages, making him a key weapon for beating man coverage and a top-tier fantasy pick.

Insight page
PositiveBreakout39:12

Matt Harmon and Hayden Winks are high on Dalton Kincaid, calling him an 'awesome pick' who looks physically improved and more explosive. Harmon notes Kincaid is now built like a 'real NFL tight end' and is firmly in the TE3-TE5 conversation.

Insight page

DeVonta Smith

PositiveProjection71:00

Matt Harmon expects Devonta Smith to have a big Week 2 against the Titans, noting that he faced heavy coverage shading in Week 1 and is a confident start.

Insight page

Drake London

NegativeUsage64:01

Drake London's fantasy outlook is volatile due to the Falcons' quarterback situation. While he saw 84% of his snaps lined up out wide, his production is heavily dependent on the quarterback play, with Matt Harmon noting that even with Michael Penix, the usage will remain volatile.

Insight page

Ja'Marr Chase

NegativeProjection52:25

Josh Norris notes that Ja'Marr Chase had a slow start in Week 1, similar to last year, but expects him to blow up in a positive direction soon. He expresses frustration that Chase hasn't yet provided a 'normal' high-scoring fantasy performance.

Insight page

Jack Bech

PositiveRole51:11

Jack Besh is utilized correctly by the Raiders, playing over the middle of the field rather than running deep routes, though he remains a part-time player not yet viable for fantasy lineups.

Insight page

Jahan Dotson

NegativeUsage57:46

Jahan Dotson surprisingly led all wide receivers in average route depth in Week 1, a role Matt Harmon describes as a 'sacrificial field stretcher' that is bizarre given his career profile.

Insight page

Jahmyr Gibbs

PositiveUsage25:50

Jahmyr Gibbs remains a fantastic fantasy pick, doing significant damage through his receiving workload in Week 2. He recorded eight targets and six catches, proving his value as a dual-threat weapon in the Lions' offense.

Insight page
PositiveUsage40:54

Matt Harmon is comfortable with Jahmyr Gibbs' workload, noting 22 touches in his recent game as a positive sign. While he doesn't want to see 34-touch games consistently, he expects Gibbs to be a major factor in upcoming matchups against weak defenses.

Insight page

Jalen Nailor

PositiveRole40:50

Matt Harmon advocates for rolling out Jalen Nailor, noting he has been an effective man-coverage receiver with nice grabs in Week 1, despite his limited 30% route participation.

Insight page

James Cook

NegativeUsage14:57

James Cook remains a productive fantasy back, but his goal-line usage is limited, as Josh Allen and the tight ends are preferred in those situations. He is also not seeing the high-volume receiving workload some expected, leading to a slight downgrade in his draft value from a late first-round pick to an early second-round pick.

Insight page

Jameson Williams

PositiveValue32:28

Matt Harmon and Hayden Winks agree that Jameson Williams is a 'great buy low' candidate. Despite expected volatility and games where he may only score five fantasy points, Harmon projects him to finish around WR25, noting that his increased slot usage (up to 26%) and the Lions' poor defense will force the team to keep him involved.

Insight page

Jared Goff

PositiveProjection29:04

Jared Goff is a high-floor fantasy quarterback who is projected to be among the league leaders in passing yards again this season. Given the Lions' defensive struggles, Goff will likely be forced into high-volume passing situations, leading to frequent 300-yard, multi-touchdown games.

Insight page

Joe Burrow

NegativeInjury52:21

Josh Norris reports that Joe Burrow is dealing with a back issue following hits in Week 1. Matt Harmon emphasizes that Burrow's lack of availability has been a primary reason for the Bengals' failure to make the playoffs in recent years.

Insight page

Josh Allen

PositiveProjection3:48

Josh Allen is playing at an elite level, finishing with 99th percentile total EPA in Week 2. Hayden Winks notes this is the best he has ever seen Allen play, citing his 100% success rate as a runner (11 positive plays on 11 attempts) and his ability to diagnose coverage. He is currently in a tier of his own, and his high-scoring performance makes him a league-winning asset despite preseason concerns about opportunity cost.

Insight page

Justin Herbert

PositiveProjection46:26

Matt Harmon notes Justin Herbert had a bad game in Week 1, failing to target running backs for the first time in his career, but maintains he is still within the 'circle of trust' despite the poor performance.

Insight page

Kayshon Boutte

NegativeUsage39:49

Matt Harmon believes Kayshon Boutte is a sneaky start but expects him to be sacrificed to DJ Turner in coverage, limiting his fantasy potential.

Insight page
PositiveSleeper59:05

Matt Harmon suggests Kayshon Boutte is a 'sneaky start' for Week 2, as he is expected to step into the X-receiver role for the Texans if Nico Collins is unable to play.

Insight page

Kendre Miller

PositiveUsage72:31

Kendre Miller is emerging as a threat to Travis Etienne's workload, having handled both backfield touches inside the 10-yard line in Week 1 and converting one for a touchdown.

Insight page

Keon Coleman

PositiveRole19:17

Keon Coleman showed flashes of potential in Week 2, demonstrating the ability to settle into open space when Josh Allen enters creation mode and winning against man coverage. He remains a secondary piece who will benefit from the overall strength of the Bills' passing attack.

Insight page

Kyle Pitts

PositiveProjection62:40

Matt Harmon believes Michael Penix will be good enough to save Kyle Pitts' fantasy value to a degree, noting that Pitts had a 50-plus yard gain down the seam in Week 1 that was only missed due to an underthrow by Cooper Rush.

Insight page

Ladd McConkey

NegativeInjury44:46

Ladd McConkey was working off to the side with a trainer during practice, and Matt Harmon expresses concern about the Chargers' offense without him, noting a significant drop-off to the secondary options.

Insight page

Nico Collins

NegativeInjury57:04

Josh Norris reports that Nico Collins is dealing with a Grade 1 hamstring strain and has not been practicing. Matt Harmon believes the Texans' offense is centered entirely around Collins and will struggle significantly if he is sidelined.

Insight page

Parker Washington

PositiveMatchup58:54

Parker Washington is considered matchup-proof by the analysts, especially against Denver, following a 145-yard performance against them last year; he is a recommended start in flex or WR3 spots.

Insight page

Pat Freiermuth

PositiveBreakout76:43

Pat Freiermuth is emerging as a legitimate fantasy tight end option that managers should take seriously following his Week 1 performance.

Insight page

Quentin Johnston

PositiveMatchup49:10

Quentin Johnston historically performs well against the Raiders, and Matt Harmon suggests he should have a good game in Week 2 based on the matchup, despite his inconsistency.

Insight page

Sam LaPorta

PositiveProjection39:01

Matt Harmon views Sam LaPorta as an 'awesome pick' and expects his production (e.g., 6 catches, 52 yards, 1 TD) to be a consistent baseline for the rest of the season. He ranks LaPorta firmly in the TE3-TE5 tier.

Insight page

Saquon Barkley

PositiveUsage67:23

Despite a poor Week 1 performance behind a struggling offensive line, Saquon Barkley remains a strong start. He accounted for 80% of the Eagles' backfield touches, and Harmon expects the run game results to improve against the Titans.

Insight page

Tank Bigsby

NegativeUsage56:10

Tank Bigsby had the third-most forced missed tackles in Week 1 and showed impressive ability to avoid contact and fall forward, leading to calls to stack his performances.

Insight page

Travis Etienne

NegativeUsage72:03

Travis Etienne's fantasy value is in jeopardy after a disappointing Week 1 where he played only 39% of routes and saw limited snap percentages. Harmon notes that Etienne's previous production was heavily inflated by favorable field position from turnovers, and if the current backfield rotation continues, he could be a 'small loss' player.

Insight page

Trevor Lawrence

PositiveProjection61:10

Trevor Lawrence is viewed as a top-six quarterback for the upcoming slate due to his arm strength and the Jaguars' well-constructed offense, regardless of the matchup.

0:00Alright, big show for you here today as the Yahoo Fantasy Forecast is presented by Toyota, the official automotive partner of the NFL.
0:07All season long, Toyota is celebrating the passion, traditions, and unforgettable moments that make football America's obsession.
0:11From fantasy football to every kickoff, rivalry, and Sunday ritual.
0:14Alright, it is a big, big show that we got coming for you here today.
0:19As I said, we've got an electric Thursday Night Football recap off the top with Hayden Winks, Lions, Bills.
0:24Whoa boy, we are excited about this Bills offense.
0:26Okay, I went chain out for the recap for Joe Brady.
0:30Shout out to Joe Brady. 77 freaking points for the Buffalo Bills through the first two weeks.
0:34We're going to talk about how excited we are about that offense, what a great pick Dalton Kincaid was, plus what we
0:41saw from the Lions where there's still plenty of reasons to be optimistic about that offense, even though the defense cannot stop a nosebleed right now.
0:48Then, Josh Norris jumps on with me for the rest of the show to talk through Week 2 questions.
0:54Also, take your questions in the Yahoo Fantasy Toyota mailbag.
0:56All that and more come up on today's show.
0:59It's a big one. Let's get into it. What's going on, everyone?
1:02I'm Matt Harmon, and welcome to the Yahoo Fantasy Forecast Nightcap, and it is a hell of a night to talk ball.
1:09And joining me to do just that after electric high scoring, as predicted on this show, and pretty much anybody could have seen that coming.
1:16High scoring Thursday Night Football Affair. It was a great one, and it is our guy, Hayden Winks.
1:21Hayden, you got a little dark setup here. You're looking like you're ready for the night.
1:25Moody? Yeah, a little moody. Yeah, we're having a little birthday celebration for me and my brother over there, and got back
1:32in time to put up these box score numbers.
1:34Are just out of control. And if you guys watch that game, which I'm sure you just did, it felt like the entire game, everybody was wide open.
1:42It didn't matter who they were throwing the ball to, and I think that's going to be the reality for both teams.
1:49I think the Bills defense is going to have question marks, and then the Lions are going to have even more question
1:55marks, and it's not going to get fixed anytime soon.
1:58No, I don't think it's getting fixed anytime soon, but hey, it really worked out for basically everybody, almost everybody in fantasy football tonight.
2:05There's no question about that. Bills 41, Lions 24.
2:07That's what we're talking through here. 77 points for the Buffalo Bills through two weeks of the NFL season.
2:12I mean, Joe Brady and the boys have been cooking.
2:15I decided to wear the chain out tonight for Joe Brady, you know, in solidarity, you know, so we got that going here.
2:22Man, the Bills offense incredibly impressive just all the way through.
2:25Hayden, what were your notes on that side of it?
2:28Yeah, so Josh Allen finishes with a 99th percentile total EPA in this one, and it wasn't like, obviously there's like some
2:34nice play design stuff, but this wasn't like a merchant-based offense.
2:37The non-play action plays, 0.46 EPA per play for the Bills in this one.
2:41Josh Allen's success rate, 100% as a runner. That was six design runs, five scrambles.
2:46All 11 of them went for a positive play.
2:4882% of them went for a first down in this one.
2:51And they did this with DJ Moore leaving early in this game.
2:55And by the way, DJ Moore, hopefully he gets back.
2:58It sounds like maybe an AC joint because he's going to be an absolute stud in this offense because everyone is going to get home.
3:05The Josh Allen and the Lamar Jackson of all right now, like the NFL is in a state where these alien quarterbacks
3:11with the play callers kind of like fully unleashing these guys and actually getting them some weapons.
3:16Dalton Kincaid probably being the biggest one in this game.
3:19I don't know how you're going to stop these alien quarterbacks this year.
3:22It just kind of feels like one of those years where, man, like if we're talking about the prime of their athletic
3:29careers and they're obviously now getting into the peak of their mental careers as well.
3:33So it's gonna be very, very tough to stop Josh.
3:36I don't know what you would do. I'm ready to say some irresponsible things about the 2026 Buffalo bills.
3:41And it's the first thing is like, I think this is easily the best I've ever seen Josh Allen play.
3:47And look, it's through two games and the Lions defense stinks out loud, but the Texans do not.
3:52Okay. And I do think a part of this too, is, you know, you're, you're right to mention that he is.
3:58And Lamar as well. Like he's good to group this in with as well.
4:02These physical freak quarterbacks that have also now, like we talked about this with Jared Goff when he started to really catch fire with the Lions.
4:09It's like, yeah, Jared Goff has seen every form of coverage.
4:12He's able to diagnose things. Now he has, like, he's basically the offensive coordinator and chief architect of the Lions offense.
4:18Now think about that, but it's Josh Allen, you know, all respect to Jared Goff, who's a great player.
4:24But now we're talking about, yeah, it's, it's, it's Josh Allen and Lamar too.
4:28And they're also, I think hitting complete stride with the play callers.
4:31Like this is why if you're the Buffalo bills, man, I mean, it's gotta be tough to be Sean McDermott right now.
4:38I know it's only two games and like, you gotta go in the Superbowl and the whole deal, but it does really feel like.
4:44Not addition by subtraction. That feels a little bit too harsh, but just like, this is why you make this bet.
4:50If you're the Buffalo bills, you promote Josh Allen's guy.
4:53You basically do everything that Josh Allen wants. And these are the results 77 points through two weeks.
4:58And, you know, Hayden, what's tough about this offense is just, I mean, my God, nine and one on Thursday night football,
5:05best record by a quarterback with 10 plus Thursday night games.
5:08As we're showing on the screen right now, the, the superlatives could go on and on, but to your point about how do you stop this offense?
5:15They just can throw so many different things at you.
5:18I mean, they were in heavy personnel packages consistently, both in week one.
5:22And then once again, in this game, I had this when there was just like the last drive to go, which is obviously just bleeding out the clock.
5:30Who cares? They were in 11 personnel on 35% of their snaps, according to Sumer sports, 12 personnel, 31%, 13 personnel, 26%.
5:36It's just, and they have the matchup nightmares to, to go along with that, with the way Dalton Kincaid is playing right now.
5:43I mean, he is going to go down, I think is one of the best picks in fantasy this year.
5:48Yeah, definitely. So, I mean, his route rate isn't like a hundred percent, but it's getting closer to like the 70% mark.
5:55And like, that is an increase. And a lot of those looks, it's not that he's playing, uh, and it's like good to get snaps in 11 personnel.
6:03But if you're going to be running routes in the 13 personnel and you're the guy they're actually targeting, that's like how
6:09you like scheme up these like ridiculous per route numbers out there.
6:12And that's exactly what he's doing. He's, he's part of the equation of beating the man coverage stuff.
6:18And like, there was too many games in the playoffs over the last couple of years where the Buffalo bills, they would
6:24just say, we're going to play some man coverage.
6:26We're going to have two eyeballs on Josh Allen at, at linebacker or at safety.
6:31And then they were just getting pressed out of the, out of the gym.
6:35And they can't really do that as, as easy this year when DJ Moore, a healthy and flying down the football field.
6:41And when Dalton Kincaid is looking this good, uh, we had multiple like high point catches in the first game.
6:47He's just so athletic. He's just also somebody that probably, uh, as he gets a little bit older, has a little bit
6:53better feel for zone coverage and all that type of stuff.
6:56So, uh, really, really dynamic offense here. Um, and he's going to have to, cause I was not still that impressed with the bills defense either.
7:03No, I do want to talk about that when we get to the lions side of things here.
7:09And again, every caveat that we say about the bills tonight, obviously it's still the early season, the whole deal, whatever that
7:15lines defense is going to, I mean, it's, it's going to be big, tall football.
7:19Whenever you play an NFC North team, pretty much.
7:22Cause I feel like the, I feel the same way about the Packers.
7:25I feel the same way about the bears. And obviously we'll see about the Vikings too.
7:30They're kind of a different, they're kind of the outlier in that division.
7:34But I mean, this lions defense, man, I don't know.
7:36Like they got to get those safeties healthy back ASAP.
7:39And I don't even know if that matters. Is that enough?
7:42I mean, I don't think it's enough. No. I mean, they're, they got corner injuries again in this game and they don't,
7:49they just simply like, don't have the dudes outside.
7:51And I really liked the way that Nate put this on, on Twitter.
7:55I saw that Kelvin shepherd was like emotionally blitzing.
7:58Like they'd get ripped for a big play and he sends like a blitz the next play after.
8:03And it's just, you know, just launching it right over them.
8:06So I don't really trust this. Like, I think the scheme is very boom bust.
8:10And when you have a very boom bust scheme and you've got serious personnel questions, I think they're just going to get fried all season long.
8:17And Aiden Hutchinson made a lot of plays tonight, but was also like, I mean, more tired than I am right now.
8:24That's probably an exaggeration, but I mean, I mean, maybe he's like got the flu or something like that.
8:29But I mean, it was, it was bizarre watching that tonight for sure.
8:33Yeah. That's like, you know, Dion Dawkins, like a kind of like unsung hero, obviously for bills fans.
8:38That's not true. But for like the rest of like media and like for the casuals out there, I mean, he was dominant in pass protection.
8:45They said he's, he's dropped a couple pounds going into the season as well.
8:49And like four out of the five players on the offensive line were returning here.
8:54So this is gonna be a very difficult offense to start.
8:57It's, it's interesting with the James Cook stuff. Thankfully, he got that goal line touchdown.
9:01It does feel like the Buffalo Bills, like when they're at the one yard line, it feels like James Cook is like
9:07the third most likely guy to score a touchdown.
9:10It's like one of the tight ends, obviously Josh Allen himself.
9:13And then after that, maybe we'll get James Cook a touchdown.
9:16James Cook, not that involved as a receiver. At the same time, you're going to hit just so many home runs when
9:22this team's gonna be projected for 30 points like every single week.
9:26So I don't feel too bad for the James Cook people that have drafted him.
9:30But man, those were some painful goal to go situations.
9:33And when I'm watching them, I'm like, this is the ball is not going to him.
9:38Not only that. And listen, you said the people that drafted James Cook.
9:41This is the first year. I'm really one of those people because I took him in the, in, in our Yahoo fantasy league.
9:48I've got him in another league too. That was not fun.
9:51Okay. It is not fun to have a James Cook on your fantasy team when, yeah, it's just, I mean, even beyond
9:57that, Hayden, like the goal line stuff, whatever. I'm, I'm emotionally, I'm, I'm well, no, I guess I'm not emotionally, but I
10:03thought I was ready and prepared for that. But like, even some of the times like James Cook gets out in the
10:10open field tonight, he almost looks like he starts slowing down.
10:13Like, is he part of the scam? Is he in on the bit?
10:17Like that he knows like Josh Allen is going to come in and get this as we're showing on the screen here.
10:23Like this is the best meme that's ever been put out on social media.
10:27It's so right. James Cook and it's just Ralph Wiggum slamming in through the, yeah.
10:31I mean, it's crazy. I don't know. It's just, there's nothing you can do about that.
10:36If you drafted James Cook, this is part of it.
10:38I do think, you know, maybe he sold us a bill of goods on the receiving stuff when he came on the
10:45show and said like, you'll see on Sunday. I'm seeing one catch for four yards, which yeah, I'll see.
10:50And I'm not seeing a lot of catches from James Cook so far.
10:54So yeah, I think like if we were redrafting today, I'd probably say he's, you know, maybe like an early second round
11:00pick instead of a late first round pick, whatever.
11:03Totally fine in, in the fantasy league. I don't care because my running back one is actually Derek Henry, who I took it running back to.
11:10So I'm feeling fine about that. By the way, shout out to Max in our Yahoo fantasy league.
11:15I mean, he's going to need Josh Allen to be a superhero every single week with some of the receivers, but he's a superhero this week.
11:23I mean, to flip this over, to flip this over to the lion side of it.
11:27But Max is going against Joel, who has Jameer Gibbs.
11:30He took him one overall and like, you know, now he didn't have a shot because Josh Allen just dropped like a 40 burger or something like that.
11:38So yeah, the, the, the bills offense is unbelievable.
11:41I like watch this team through the first two weeks, Hayden.
11:44And I do have questions about defense. We'll talk about that here, that here in a minute.
11:49But if Josh Allen is playing like that, and I do think DJ more being healthy is a big variable here because I shout out to Keon Coleman.
11:57He had a couple of nice moments in this game where he had one play where he settled when Josh Allen goes
12:03into creation mode, which he's actually always been pretty good at doing.
12:06And then a few like nice out cut wins against man coverage lines corners aren't good, but still, you know, for Keon
12:13Coleman, that couple of nice routes there. They're going to need DJ more to be out there and be healthy.
12:18But if he is, and Dalton Kincaid is playing like this, I mean that famous last words like that team could easily
12:24win the Super Bowl with Josh Allen playing at this level.
12:28Really could. I'm also like paying attention to players like Dion Walker, like defensive tackles, like these type of players who like
12:34maybe they go from like being a singular to a double to like maybe they can be.
12:39An actual home run selection. Like they need a couple of these guys to pop up on defense like their top corner
12:45Christian Benford very up and down player. They put him in very difficult spots, but sometimes he looks good out there.
12:51Sometimes he doesn't seem like those ancillary players on defense that are going to make the difference.
12:56They didn't have at Oliver in this one and totally around the DJ more stuff.
13:00Like I really do think DJ more is going to end up being one of the better picks.
13:05Hopefully you get back on the football field. Sounds like an AC joint.
13:09They were trying to go get x-rays for him.
13:11Typically, if it's like mild, that's like one to three weeks.
13:15Hopefully that's what this is. And I think Buffalo has they can be patient with them because they're sitting pretty right now.
13:21They have to feel very, very, very confident. Schedule for the Buffalo Bills coming up here.
13:25Buying myself some time. They got the Chargers, the Patriots, the Rams, and then the Raiders before a week seven by.
13:31So definitely some games that they would like to have DJ more out there for.
13:36Okay, a couple things from the chat. I just want to laugh at here real quick before we talk about the Lions.
13:42Mr. Knice guy. They told me second round was too early to draft Josh Allen, and they told me Dalton Kincaid week one was fool's gold.
13:49Well, we definitely didn't tell you about that with Dalton Kincaid.
13:53I said on Sunday Dalton Kincaid was one of the most impressive players I watched.
13:57So I'm in on Dalton Kincaid 100%. The second round was too early to draft Josh Allen.
14:02Okay, I did post about this during the game.
14:04This is classic like preseason brain fantasy football analyst.
14:07You're like, listen, I'm wearing the glasses so I can do this.
14:10Listen, opportunity cost and you know, you're going to be burned.
14:13It's too late. Like there's the quarterback is too deep.
14:16And then actually having Josh Allen on your fantasy team kind of kicks ass, man.
14:20So you know what? Next year. And I like when we talked about Josh Allen, I did make sure to say like
14:27Josh is in a tier of his own. Like he's a different beast, whatever.
14:31But you know, and I said, I've got Josh Allen on dynasty teams.
14:34I don't need to take him a redraft, whatever.
14:37But you know, again, sometimes there are exceptions to the rules and he is absolutely looking like that this year.
14:43He was being drafted. So Marion Hampton, AJ Brown, Brock Bowers, Nico Collins, Drake London, George Pickens right now.
14:48I mean, oh, Drake London, what miracle of what miracle of God would have to happen for Drake London to have like
14:54a 40 point game even right now? Seriously. I don't know.
14:57I mean, hopefully, you know, the bow next year, like those type of guys have to put up crazy numbers to keep up.
15:04It just seems like one of those years where Josh Allen on the market, they're going to be averaging 25 points per game.
15:11It's just like on hopefully the kind of tandem, the Jordan love plus Justin Herbert, like that tandem.
15:16Like hopefully you play the matchups and you can make up the difference.
15:19But it's we have our work cut out like the quarterback, you know, eight to quarterback 16 that we're talking up like it's on.
15:26Yeah, I have Justin Herbert and I'm telling you what, I'm not feeling great about it.
15:31I'm not feeling great about competing with the Josh Allen teams right now.
15:35Zare 805 says I was about to leave my wife if James Cook didn't score.
15:39I think I think and again, somebody that had James Cook.
15:42I think our wives should have left us, pal, if James Cook didn't score there because we knew what we were getting and we walked right into it.
15:50So there you go. OK, Lions notes here. Jameer Gibbs, like I don't want to take this away from him.
15:56He also is a fantastic fantasy pick. 16 carries, 52 yards, but he did most of his damage from a fantasy standpoint from a receiving workload.
16:03Eight catches or eight targets, six catches and a really nice touchdown.
16:06Good design there from Petsing, who I'm sure the Lions fans hate right now.
16:10But good design from Petsing. Gibbs scores the touchdown there.
16:13I have like no negative notes really about the Lions offense aside.
16:17Like they just got to get healthier on offense.
16:19Their early down runs, negative 0.3 EPA per play.
16:22Like that's just obviously not very good, but they're missing their center.
16:25They're missing their left guard. They're missing a right tackle.
16:28Penny Sewell didn't have like the best game. So I think that's like kind of where you have like the worst, like the most concerns there.
16:35I don't know. I think the Petsing offense looks pretty good.
16:39Like they were getting Jameer Gibbs in like one-on-one situations.
16:41And like that was barbecue chicken out there. And Amon Ross St.
16:45Brown's like continues to eat at all levels of the field.
16:48Like I know this is something that you've been preaching for a while.
16:52Like this is not this slot merchant type of player that you're thinking he is.
16:56Like Amon Ross St. Brown with this defense. I think this is the year where he is going to leap and actually
17:02going to be able to compete with Puka Nakua, Jamar Chase.
17:05We'll see about Justin Jefferson. Like he's always been like one half tier in fantasy behind those guys.
17:11He's he's gonna score like those guys because this defense is not going to get any better.
17:15It's like they have Aiden Hutchinson, but he was gassed in this one.
17:19And they really just do not have the guys in the secondary right now.
17:23And I just don't think that's going to be fixed.
17:26Like even like Branch and Kirby Joseph. Like when they come back from injury, like are those going to be the same level of players?
17:33Is that even still enough? If those corners are going to be out there for that many snaps, I just don't know
17:39what they're going to do about that. But I thought Jared Goff played really well in this one.
17:44Jared Goff has been second in passing yards in the last three seasons.
17:48He's going to be second or first this year.
17:51Like he's going to have so many 300 yard passing games for touchdowns, 327 yards in this one.
17:56Took a couple sacks. There's a bad snap that he had to fall on.
18:00He was scrambling around for a couple plays too.
18:02But man, the passing numbers are going to be so obviously there the entire year.
18:07Yeah, 100%. I mean, he's going to have a chance to just go crazy from a touchdown standpoint.
18:12This was something we talked about in the preseason for sure.
18:15St. Brown, by the way, did not have his first reception in this game until 6 minutes and 17 seconds left in the second quarter.
18:22So he was truly sitting on a zero spot, as we're showing on the screen here, 4.3 fantasy points in the first half.
18:29I mean, there's going to be a lot of that.
18:31And there's going to be games, by the way, where he has 15 points going into the second half.
18:37And then he adds like another 20 to 30 more.
18:40Hayden is absolutely correct on that. I had him ranked ahead of JSN coming into this year as my wide receiver three.
18:46Not that there was anything wrong with JSN at all.
18:49It was just, I mean, Amon Ross St. Brown was so obviously, like I think he's graduated to that tier of player.
18:55I did a video on this for my YouTube channel right before the season that like he's, there's no box.
19:01He doesn't check, like, is he the, in hypothetical scenarios where he's going to run the Marvin Harrison Jr.
19:06Route tree? Like, yeah, you don't want him to run that.
19:09Well, okay, great. I don't really want actually anybody to be running that Route tree.
19:14Yeah, I really don't want, I really don't want, I really don't want anybody to be running that Route tree.
19:19So great. Who cares? In every other scenario that Amon Ross St.
19:23Brown actually plays in, he's one of the best wide receivers in football.
19:26Like, he's, this is when I made this point in the video and I'll just say it here.
19:32Like, he's having like a Hall of Fame start to his career.
19:35And this could really be like the cherry on top type season where it becomes obvious for everybody.
19:40So if you took him in the first round of your drafts, congratulations.
19:44He was someone I really wanted actually in our analyst league, did not end up getting.
19:48But elsewhere on the Lions offense, I will say this just about Jamison Williams because I see we've got some comments in
19:55the chat about like J-Mo panic meter incoming. Folks, like this, talk about this is what you signed up for.
20:00I'm sorry. And I know, Hayden, that like J-Mo gets gassed in training camp every single year.
20:05It's the most, it's the number one thing you can ignore in the offseason because they do this every single year.
20:11And then he has the exact same season every single year.
20:14It happens. Every year it's the Dan Campbell gassed him up.
20:17Jared Goff talks him up. Then there's like a little sparkling from internet hipsters about, oh, this is the year he actually
20:24might be the wide receiver one on the team.
20:26I guarantee you will find those tweets. I'm telling you, it happens every year.
20:30And then he has a stretch of games where he does absolutely nothing and all of his haters come out and bag on him.
20:37And then he's going to have a stretch of games where he's a monster and all of his real backers are going
20:43to come and tell you you're a complete dumbass because you don't think he's an elite receiver.
20:48This is just how it goes with Jamison every year.
20:51And the truth is somewhere in the middle. He gets the Jets, the Panthers, the Cardinals and the Packers over the next
20:57four weeks to figure this thing out. He's going to be very volatile.
21:01He's going to finish as like, you know, the wide receiver 25 in fantasy.
21:05If Jared Goff is going to pass for 5,000 yards, which I really do think he's going to be pretty close to that number.
21:12There's going to be games where James Williams has 162 yards.
21:15So you're going to have to live with it.
21:18I will say this about J-Mo. There are bigger and bigger splits with and without Sam Laporta.
21:22Nine games last year plus the week one game.
21:25He's been the wide receiver 43 on wide receiver 54 usage.
21:28His depth of target is 15 yards down the football field.
21:31Without Sam Laporta, he was working a little bit underneath.
21:34So you're talking about the Marvin Harrison route tree.
21:37It's not that drastic, but he is going to be running a little bit more clear out routes, a fewer, fewer like crossing routes.
21:43Obviously, on the all 22 tomorrow, I'll be able to go back and watch exactly what happened tonight.
21:49But I think he's going to be even more volatile as Sam Laporta is out there.
21:53And especially like the pet scene kind of tree thing about like the training bride stuff.
21:58Sam Laporta is going to get his Monroe St.
22:00Brown is going to get his a lot of like over the middle throws in this one.
22:05Especially if you're including those Gibbs targets in this one.
22:08And Jameson Williams, he's just going to have to come down with his big post routes as the season goes.
22:14The good news is he absolutely will. Well, you're just going to have to live with these games where he scores five fantasy points.
22:21Yeah, and I think it will be worth living through.
22:23I mean, you've mentioned some of those upcoming matches.
22:26He's a great buy low. He's a great buy low right now.
22:29If you can, if you're strong enough, right? Like if you're strong enough to do this, I mean, he's definitely a good buy low.
22:36I will say too, the other thing is worth noting about him.
22:40I actually do think Isaac Tesla, who's just going to be on the field, like taking up space.
22:45Had like one little nice catch. It's fine. And like him actually not being somebody that can move inside or be like
22:51more of a true like on ball player for them.
22:54I noticed some more, you know, JMO is playing in the off the ball, playing in the slot a little bit more.
23:00Like his slot percentage in this game is like 26%.
23:03You know, if you go back to some of his early career moments, it's like in the 15% range.
23:08So again, I do think that is helpful for JMO eventually hitting those strides.
23:12Yeah, 18% in 2025, 24% so far this year.
23:15That's a slight move, but it will matter at some point for him to get some of these big plays off.
23:21So yeah, I mean, it just is what it is with JMO.
23:24I do agree with you. He's a buy low.
23:27The Lions, they played what nine quarters, including the overtime game, seven of them.
23:31It's just like pathetic defense, like not even like, you know, kind of questionable defense, like beyond pathetic defense.
23:36So they're going to they're going to have no choice but to get all these guys involved.
23:41I will say Sam Laporte is looking like an awesome pick as well.
23:45I think this is like six for 52 and a touchdown.
23:48Like we can like copy paste that for pretty much the rest of the season.
23:52And I do think that, you know, Dalton Kincaid, Sam Laporte, like Tyler Warren, like he better have a good season because
23:59these guys are hot right behind them. And like, I think that's tight end three, tight end four, tight end five conversation,
24:05like absolutely includes both the tight ends that we saw in this one.
24:09Yeah, Kincaid especially again, I really think he's going to go down as a awesome pick this year.
24:14Maybe one of the best picks you can make.
24:16He just looks so much better, too. I say this a lot, like he did not look physical and like built like
24:22an NFL tight end in his first few seasons.
24:25The PCL and just like, I mean, his leg.
24:28I was so but it's like his legs are were so small in his first few years.
24:32Like now he actually looks like a real boy, like a real NFL tight end.
24:37So he's done. Dude, he's definitely caked up. I'm telling you this.
24:40It makes a big difference. And that's why he's so explosive and easy.
24:44Like these long strides and explosive strides up the seams that you're seeing in this game.
24:48That's stuff that he can actually pull off now on a consistent basis and they can play him more.
24:54Gibbs comes out of this game with 22 touches.
24:56I'm actually feeling OK about 22 touches for Jameer Gibbs 34 in week one.
25:00I know that's great. I don't really want to be seeing 34 touch games for Jameer Gibbs consistently.
25:05So Vika having a couple little moments there in that game.
25:09Cool. That's great. But man, he's going to be an absolute print fest is your Lions games coming up.
25:14Jets, Panthers, Cardinals, as you mentioned before the bye.
25:17Those are all like offenses. I'm going to be wanting to target when they play this Detroit Lions defense there.
25:22There is no doubt about that. Hayden, any other final notes here before we close this one out?
25:27No, I think I think we hit on all of it.
25:31These two defenses can be the entire year. Hopefully you guys got players on both both sides of the ball here.
25:37Yeah, I know feeling pretty good if you got those players on your fantasy teams right now.
25:41All right. That's going to do it for this Yahoo fantasy night cap.
25:45What a game. Really good Thursday night game. Really enjoyed all the points in your lineups.
25:50I hope you guys had a good start to your fantasy weekend.
25:53With that, we will catch you all next time.
25:56All right. Shout out to a great Thursday night football game.
25:59Shout out to Hayden Winks. Appreciate you, man. Now let's toss to Josh Norris and the rest of the week two preview.
26:05Let's get into it. What's going on, everyone? I'm Matt Harmon.
26:08Welcome to the Yahoo fantasy podcast presented by Toyota, the official automotive partner of the NFL.
26:13All season long, Toyota is celebrating the passion, traditions and unforgettable moments that make football America's obsession from fantasy football to every kickoff rivalry and Sunday ritual.
26:20And it is a hell of a day to talk ball.
26:24And joining me to do just that is my good friend, Josh Norris.
26:27Josh, what's going on, buddy? Matt, I have all the answers.
26:30You know, every single thing that we could possibly know for the next 17 weeks, we learned in week one.
26:36Some teams were good. Some teams were bad. And some teams were absolutely abysmal and awful.
26:41And those fans have given up. So I'm excited to talk about it all here today with you.
26:46Oh, good. I'm glad you have all the answers because I feel way less confident heading into week two than I did heading into week one.
26:53And I feel like that probably happens every year.
26:56And yet it's still reality smacks you in the face when you have to adjust.
27:00And maybe we over adjust to what we saw in week one.
27:03That'll be the goal of today's preview show. As we go through the games, we're balancing what were our expectations, what we
27:10saw on Sunday and what might be going forward.
27:12So it's a hell of an exercise. That is for sure.
27:15Here's how it goes on the preview show every single week.
27:19We have Josh's six pack of fantasy questions as we head into every week's slate of games.
27:23Then we have my three games that no one cares about.
27:27But you have to care about something from each of them for fantasy football because that is how it works.
27:32And then we wrap it up with your questions in the Toyota fantasy hotline.
27:36So without any further ado, let's get into it.
27:39Welcome to Josh's six pack of questions. I know you're going to have to get used to it.
27:44It probably took me. It was for last year when we did this with Boone's six pack of questions.
27:49I think like in October, I finally got used to it.
27:52And then it got funny again in December. Or maybe I made a comment about it every single episode.
27:58I don't know. But yes, the pop topic gets you into the mood.
28:02I'm thinking about Colin didn't even like put in the sound effect.
28:05And so every time it comes on, he has to live like crack a can and right at the perfect time with the intro to that.
28:12Anyway, do you want me to lead into the first one here?
28:16Sure. I will just say for Colin's sake, he probably deserves a beer or two during these shows.
28:21I mean, he's got to deal with me all week long.
28:24I think he deserves to pop a couple tops here.
28:27Maybe all six of them. We'll see how the season goes.
28:30I'm surprised if the six pack wasn't empty after watching his Dallas Cowboys play defense last weekend.
28:35But that's a different point for another day. Here we go.
28:38Question number one. Can the Bengals torch the Texans just like the Bills just did?
28:42All right. So the Texans defense last week, Matt, allowed the highest explosive pass play rate in the NFL versus the aforementioned Buffalo Bills offense.
28:49DJ Moore, Don Kincaid and even Khalil Shakir were torching them down the field.
28:53Now they get Jamar Chase, Ante Higgins, and I'll add the offensive line that allowed the lowest pressure rate to a quarterback in the NFL.
29:01Matt, this is certainly not the position that we thought the Texans would be in heading into week two.
29:06They are still favored in this game at home by just two and a half points.
29:11But this Bengals team didn't put their best foot forward.
29:13And we know as deeper we get into the NFL season, the better they look.
29:18And maybe that's here and they can be another kryptonite for that Texans defense.
29:22Perhaps they can. I will lead into my just questions on your question, which is last week we saw the Bills torch the Texans defense.
29:29I think in a very specific way, because this happens, Josh, like in week one where a team comes out and just
29:35looks pretty different than the unit that we saw previously.
29:38And I think catches a team by surprise. And if you're the Houston Texans, you're preparing for the Buffalo Bills in week
29:44one, a team, by the way, that you've had a lot of success against.
29:48It's the same play caller, right, with Joe Brady, head coach now, but he's always been the play caller.
29:54Same quarterback, just different personnel and all that sort of stuff.
29:57You're probably expecting a pretty different offense. Well, there are a couple of different changes with the Buffalo Bills offense.
30:02They played a lot faster. They were 32nd pace of play last year.
30:06They're way up in week one. And also they came out in 13 personnel on 43% of their snaps.
30:11And Dalton Kincaid was obviously a huge factor in that.
30:14Like, I think the Bengals, Josh, actually do have the personnel to play really fast and play a lot of 13 personnel.
30:21I mean, Mike Gusecki, we talked, I think we talked about this on the recap show, but he was pretty awesome in week one for Mike Gusecki.
30:28Like he was really good against those Bucs linebackers.
30:31Alex Anzalone had a tough game overall. You know, Gusecki was used in the slot, the whole deal.
30:36But the Bengals just never really commit to playing that style of football because just like they always do in week one,
30:42they got into a lot of spread stuff and get Joe Burrow in the gun.
30:472.3 seconds time to throw whatever. So I think theoretically they could like, why can't Gusecki do a little bit of an impression of Dalton Kincaid?
30:54They have two guys, I think, that could play in line if they wanted to get into 13 personnel.
30:59But, you know, it's just not really what they ever end up doing.
31:03Totally. And everything that we heard all offseason was, hey, they're going to run more on our center.
31:08And especially play action off of that. And then you go and look at it and they were what, like 22nd or
31:1424th in the rate of under center plays in week one.
31:18So maybe they threw out there, you know, more here in week two.
31:21Again, just the personnel of the Texans defense is a lot better, as we know, than they performed in the first week.
31:28Like Kamari Lasser's worst game, probably. The Texans allowed eight yards per play in week one, the most they've allowed in a game since week 14 of 2021.
31:36I'll add onto this that Joe Burrow is dealing with a back issue after one of his hits.
31:41And, you know, I just want the Bengals to be normal at some point.
31:45Like have a normal start to a season where Jamar Chase, the fourth overall pick in all your drafts, goes out there and scores a dozen points.
31:52But, you know, he did the same thing in week one last year and then blew up immediately in a positive direction for us.
31:59And Matt, I know we actually have a lot to talk about here on the Texans end of this equation, too.
32:05We definitely do. Just real quick, closing the loop on the Bengals here on the Joe Burrow back thing.
32:11And like, I'm sure he'll play in this game and it'll be fine.
32:14But isn't it kind of funny, Josh, that I mean, even there's always like some big media, you know, provocateur talking about
32:21like Joe Burrow is going to get himself out of Cincinnati if he doesn't go well.
32:25Like I saw Russell Wilson, shout out Russell Wilson.
32:28He's our he's our latest big media provocateur on the Sunday shows being like, you know, if it doesn't go well.
32:34And for Cincinnati this year, Joe Burrow is out of there.
32:37I'm like, how about Joe Burrow get into the football game for 17 games during a season?
32:42Wouldn't that be nice? I mean, again, I think he's going to play here most likely.
32:46But that's a big reason why they haven't made the playoffs in three years is Joe Burrow hasn't been consistently available.
32:52And to be honest, this is probably the best environment that he's had since they went to the Super Bowl.
32:58Right. Like they have done everything heading into this year to possibly set them up for a fast start.
33:03All five offensive linemen return again, lowest pressure rate that they allowed in week one.
33:08They have his two best buddies at wide receiver.
33:10And as we saw with the defense last week, that's what won them the game.
33:14That's what kept them in the game versus in previous iterations when the defense or excuse me, when the offense did come
33:21out of the gate slow and the defense couldn't hold up.
33:24They would lose those. And now they're want to know.
33:27And so here's the week for the offense to then set up to the plate against the defense that, again, really, really struggled in week one.
33:34Yeah, I would just keep an eye on the Texans linebackers in coverage.
33:38Henry Tooto is already a guy who's a little bit up and down as a coverage player.
33:43Now he's not available. So that could be an area where Cincinnati picks on this team.
33:47But that would involve like Chase Brown as a receiver, Mike Gusecki again.
33:51So we'll keep an eye on those particular matchups.
33:53Anything else you want to say about the Bengals offense or should we flip it to the other side here?
33:59Let's do the opposite side. Just quickly with CJ Stroud, he opened the game with a fumble and he closed the game with a fumble.
34:06I know there was some really good stuff in between there, but the Bengals this past weekend on defense, again, the much
34:13improved defense, converted a league high 57% of their pressures into sacks in week one.
34:17The league average rate was like 19%. And most importantly, Nico Collins is dealing with a hamstring grade one hamstring strain, not practicing at this point.
34:24A team that also lost, you know, a previous second round pick in the preseason to season ending injury.
34:30So Matt is CJ Stroud walking out there with Dalton Schultz and Xavier Hutchinson and Kayshaun Booty.
34:34Like, how is that going to work? It's probably not going to work.
34:38It would be my answer. I think they're screwed without Nico Collins because the whole theory of the case here, and this
34:44was proven in the first week with the Houston Texans offense, is this passing game is going to kind of be it's
34:51Nico Collins is at the center of the universe.
34:53Everybody orbits around him. And we kind of have like a wide receiver to by committee because I don't think they actually
35:00have a real wide receiver to, especially after Jaden Higgins went down.
35:03I kind of think, I mean, I like Tiggins heading into this year, but it wouldn't have surprised me if it was
35:09still kind of that way too, where guys are rotating in and out for that second receiver spot because they're playing more heavy personnel, all of that.
35:17But, you know, that is what it is. And right now they have, I would guess if Nico Collins doesn't play in
35:23this game, and I would kind of, if I'm, we'll talk about this in the mailbag section, like what wide receivers to use to replace guys with injuries.
35:31I have Nico Collins on some teams. I'm preparing for him to not play in week two, and I'll be pleasantly surprised if he is available to play.
35:39I would guess, Josh, then their three receiver set, which I don't know how often they'll be in three receiver sets, will
35:45be Keichon Booty as the X receiver, which is because he played X for the Patriots last year.
35:51You know, Hutchinson and Noel will kind of be rotating between flanker slot, Noel speed slot flanker, Hutchinson dirty work, big slot flanker type player there.
35:58I mean, we're already here in week two and we're talking about this.
36:02Not great. For a team that has Super Bowl aspirations, it's top.
36:05And, you know, Nico Collins, it feels like he's missed multiple games in every single season.
36:10And on top of this, if you just look at the box score, Dave Montgomery was, again, a big differentiator for them because he scored three touchdowns.
36:17But then if you look at like a per carry basis, was not great.
36:21Hit behind the line of scrimmage quite often. And so you do wonder if that is going to be able to repeat itself every single week.
36:29But they are dang sure going to try again to have Dave Montgomery to be like the focal point of this offense with Nico Collins sideline to.
36:36I thought that we saw a pretty successful ground game.
36:39I thought Woody Marks had a nice contest as well.
36:42Like, I think they're going to have to put the ball in those guys' hands a lot against the Cincinnati Bengals.
36:48Where are you at with the Bengals defense coming?
36:51You mentioned it's improved. I agree. It's like it definitely has improved.
36:54One note, matchup-wise, they played the fourth most man coverage last week, according to Fantasy Points data, did the Cincinnati Bengals.
37:00And you saw that watching the game on Sunday.
37:03One of the few teams that actually ran out a decent bit of man.
37:07And that's just – they have the cornerbacks to do it.
37:10And I talk about this a lot with man coverage.
37:13It's like, it's great if you have the corners to do it, but can everybody else hang with – can the linebackers
37:19cover the running back, the tight ends, the whole deal, like in one-on-one situations?
37:23I actually don't think the Texans prevent or present all that much of a tough matchup in that regard.
37:28Like, are you really scared of David Montgomery or Woody Marks in man coverage?
37:32I don't think so. These tight ends are interesting.
37:35Marlon Klein is an interesting player. He had one really nice reception in week one.
37:39Not too worried about that. So I feel like we'll get a lot of that man coverage once again from Cincinnati here in week two.
37:46Famous last words. I really like how this Bengals defense matches up with the Texans offense.
37:51And that probably hasn't been said since, you know, the big Lou days.
37:54But look, this Texans offensive line still has major question marks.
37:58I thought Trent Brown was, like, really poor in week one.
38:01And then, you know, you have Miles Murphy. You have Boye Maffi coming over from Seattle.
38:05You have Shamar Stewart. You also have Cassius Howell, who's like a pure pin your ears back and get after the passer.
38:12And then if it is to stop the run, Matt, this is exactly the perfect test of why you bring in Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen.
38:19And if you can fix that, then bang, bang, boom, that puts you into, like, pure passing situations.
38:24And that's when the pass rushers get to pin their ears back along with, you know, DJ Turner blanketing one side of
38:30the field with one of these corners or one of these wide receivers.
38:34So, yeah, what can go wrong when you believe in the Bengals defense in week two?
38:39Yeah, what can go wrong? I definitely think, like, Kayshawn Booty is a sneaky start.
38:43It's not something I'm all that into because I think he's just going to get totally sacrificed to DJ Turner here in this one.
38:50This has to be the jail and null time.
38:52I'm sorry. I know this is my priors talking because I like Jalen null, but this is the time to roll him out there.
38:59Like, he has been an effective man coverage receiver.
39:02I've seen it with my eyeballs. He had a couple of nice grabs in week one.
39:06Again, I don't know that you have to be very, very desperate to be considering Jalen null after he ran, like, 30
39:13percent of the routes or something like that. Right.
39:15But you have to tell yourself a story that that's a slow ramp of whatever.
39:19But I just can't. And I don't know who like they're not going to get an explosive play from anybody else in this offense, Josh.
39:27Josh. Well, the other part of that, though, is if they don't believe in their offensive line, wouldn't they just run all
39:33these tight ends out there on the field? Like Foster Moreau and Marlon Klein and Cade Stover and Brevin George.
39:38Like, they have five tight ends on the roster, along with a fullback in British Brooks.
39:43So if they are nervous about the protection help and again, two fumbles by the quarterback last week, I just wonder if
39:49they're going to run even more heavier personnel out of this stuff.
39:53So lots of questions here. Maybe they try to do a New York Giants impression and just squat on the ball and
39:59try to keep the Bengals offense off the field and grind this thing out.
40:03We'll see if it works out for them. But yeah, I mean, the reality is, like, if they don't have Nico Collins, this offense is it's bad.
40:11I hate to say it. All right. Question number two, Josh, where are we going?
40:15Can the Chargers often show up? I mean, it's really simple as that.
40:19It felt like watching a preseason game of the Chargers against the Arizona Cardinals last week.
40:23Mike McDaniel, every single play had a different formation, personnel grouping, alignment, motion, shift, post-snap movement, a wide receiver landmark.
40:29It worked on the opening scripted series because that's what they, you know, orchestrated and tried out over and over and over again in terms of rehearsals.
40:37But then after that, Matt, the Chargers drove more than 24 yards on just two of their remaining nine possessions.
40:42And we don't know about a lot of McConkie in this one.
40:46So it was pure chaos after that first drive.
40:48And I understand this was what Mike McDaniel did in Miami in terms of like the order of operations before and when
40:55the snap, you know, went out there. However, do you have to do that with Justin Herbert as your quarterback?
41:00You had to a two or is this just what we're getting?
41:04And it's going to take like multiple weeks in order for the Chargers offense to actually like get into gear and get in sync and get in rhythm.
41:12A lot of McConkie was working off to the side with a trainer again today with practice.
41:16Like Josh, is it wrong to feel very similarly with the Chargers offenses that I just felt with the Texans offense, which
41:23is without their number one wide receiver? There's a pretty strong drop off to number two and beyond, and they're kind of screwed.
41:29Don't you think you have more though? On the Chargers, like you have at least some degree of explosiveness from Quentin Johnson,
41:36albeit he has his ups and downs. I think Trey Harris is better than any wide receiver on the Houston Texans.
41:42They have all of those tight ends. And then at running back, you have both Amar and Hampton and Keaton Mitchell that should be able to create explosives.
41:50Like that was a big issue for me too.
41:52In this game was the rushing and then also force feeding the running backs.
41:56Week one was the first time Justin Herbert's in his career that he did not have an official target to a running back.
42:03And what do we think of with Mike McDaniel in Miami to the Raheem Mostert days to the Devon Achan days and
42:09everything in between was being able to get the ball into space for the backs.
42:13It felt like nothing worked after that first series, and it was one of the most shocking outcomes to me.
42:19And yeah, again, I have this negative feeling about the offense without Ladd McConkie.
42:23And the reality is also like there's so much nauseating Justin Herbert discussion on the Internet.
42:27It's like I think folks, a quarterback can have a bad game and it doesn't have to be a referendum on who the quarterback is forever and always.
42:35He had a bad game on Sunday, right? Like it was just I watched I watched that game all throughout, watched it back on film.
42:43I don't think he played well. I mean, I just period end of story that but he is still a quarterback that is within our circle of trust.
42:51And this is a matchup that unlike where the Texans are going against this Bengals defense that played really well in week one.
42:57I mean, maybe the Raiders defense is good, but I don't know how to calibrate to them after they played, you know,
43:03the JV team in Miami down down the way this this this past Sunday.
43:07So it is a gettable matchup. Just where do we find the juice to squeeze here?
43:12Again, the markets believe in the Chargers this week.
43:14They did last week as well. So maybe that doesn't mean anything, but they're six and a half point favorites here with a team total of 25.
43:22Like that is the environment that we pray for with all of these teams.
43:26The issue, as you said, is when everything was correct in terms of motions and shifts and everything, Justin Herbert would let them down on certain plays.
43:34And I also thought Cole Strange, the right guard, was one of the worst players I saw in week one out there, too.
43:40And that went to the running game that Chargers running backs rushed for a league low negative 0.13 yards before contact.
43:46Not good. Not why you brought in Mike McDaniel here.
43:49So I need to see something. And it was just very evident watching the Chargers offense, then flipping over and then watching
43:55the Cardinals offense, which was a bit more traditional, but still explosive.
43:59And like down the field and just look composed and they knew exactly what they're doing.
44:03And I would even say it for the Raiders led Clint Kubiak offense, too.
44:07So we just can't have this. Hey, it looks like we're still in preseason activity with Mike McDaniel.
44:13And if it takes until, you know, mid-October to get it correct, man, you might be out of division at that point.
44:19So it needs to work here in week two.
44:21Well, the good news is the Broncos also blew it in week one.
44:25So there's that. But to the Chiefs on top of that.
44:28Yeah, that's a fair point. Yeah, no, they definitely need to get it.
44:32I mean, in hindsight, it's not the most shocking thing if this offense takes a little bit to get going here.
44:38At the same time, like it's a good point to flip it on the Cardinals there and be like, you know what
44:44Jacover said, like just played way better. He was one of the most impressive quarterbacks I watched in week one.
44:50Just ran the system, found layups. The order operations, as you say, was really clean in Arizona.
44:55Like it should be better than this in Los Angeles.
44:58And I at least like Mike McDaniel saying that, you know, they got after it on Monday and tried to make things better.
45:04But it's got to be better. Quick Johnston. Is he a player you'd consider as like a deep star?
45:10If you look at if you look at it, I know you're making the face.
45:14But if you look at his career, he does typically tend to have his best games against the Raiders.
45:19So there is that. QJ is one of those players for us fancy football analysts that when we hype him up and
45:26it doesn't work out a la last week. Hey, the team's projection for 27 points are this many favorites.
45:31If they scored that many points, you have to think that Quentin Johnson had a great day and then he just doesn't do well at all.
45:38The next week, it's so easy to be like, no, actually, I'm not really into the QJ experience.
45:43So, again, maybe it's better to be consistent over time with an albeit inconsistent player because at some points he will have some spiked weeks.
45:51The roller coaster will be up. And, yes, if we follow the math, he should have a very good game here against this Raiders defense.
45:58Just real quick on the Raiders side of things, because you mentioned that offense.
46:02I agree. It felt really good and just clean with Clint Kubiak there.
46:05It looked like a Clint Kubiak offense. You like to see that.
46:09Some of the ancillary players had some nice moments.
46:11Shout out Jack Besh, baby. Let's go. Don't tell me about practice.
46:15All right. We opened last week's show with Jack Besh.
46:18That's right. I mean, that's that's I was like, Josh, you belong, baby.
46:21You're talking. You're talking Jack Besh week one, heading into it, gets the touchdown right away.
46:26I mean, he's still probably still a part time player, not somebody you can really consider in fantasy, but a useful player for the Las Vegas Raiders.
46:34That's good to see. But they utilized him in the correct way, Matt, which I think is important.
46:39Like, that's a good note for Clint Kubiak, where the previous, if we want to call it regime for how long they
46:45lasted there, line him up on the outside and ask him to run like downfield routes versus, hey, let's get Jack Besh
46:51like close to the formation and get him over the middle of the field.
46:55I think he ran zero go routes in week one, which was a welcome sight when it was like 15 percent in his first season.
47:02Just I still I'll never let that go. How how absolutely bizarre that was.
47:06But, yeah, they utilized him in the correct way.
47:09Trey Tucker was, again, that vertical stretch receiver. Michael Mayer was doing the Michael Mayer things.
47:13Do you have any sense on if Brock Bauer is going to play in this game?
47:18If Brock Bauer is out there? I mean, he's obviously an auto start.
47:22You know, any any sense there? This is one of those.
47:25And look, I don't have the information that they do, but I want Brock Bauer to sit for one extra game for
47:31when the Raiders think that he's healthy enough. Like if they think he's healthy in this week.
47:36OK, sit him for this week and play in the next week.
47:39It's really that simple. Why rush the dude? Why rush him right now?
47:43You already won last week, so you're kind of ahead of schedule in this moment.
47:47I want to add something here with the Chargers, even though it has something to do with the Raiders offense.
47:53Jesse Minter leaving this Chargers defense made them look a lot different.
47:57You know, the personnel is somewhat the same. I mean, you did have to bring in a key mesador to replace Odafi Owe.
48:03But I mean, Jesse Minter is one of those guys that is an elevator, right?
48:07He makes good players into great players, average players and role players into good players.
48:12And what we saw from the Chargers last week, they kind of looked older and slower and maybe didn't have the same
48:18punch and pizzazz as they had under Jesse Minter.
48:20So that is something on my mind here with this Chargers team that we all said, oh, if it's just Mike McDaniel
48:27coming in, they might be a playoff or Super Bowl contender.
48:30They didn't look like it on either side of the ball, too.
48:33Yeah, no, I did have big questions about that Chargers defense.
48:36I will say just watching the tape of that game, I didn't think they were terrible coverage-wise.
48:41I just think Arizona put them in a lot of tough situations.
48:45They chose to bracket and cloud cover Marvin Harrison all game except for one snap, essentially, where he got the go-round.
48:51It's like, well, then Jacoby Reset just took these little hitches and quick access throws to Kendrick Bourne over and over and over again.
48:57And obviously, Trey McBride had some real nice wins overall.
49:00So I am interested to see what they look like in this game.
49:04This will be a big recalibration game for the Chargers on both sides of the ball, for sure.
49:09And last thing, shout out Ashton Gentry. Preseason training camp injuries don't matter at all.
49:1329 opportunities in week number one, which was bested by Jameer Gibbs, Bijon Robinson, and tied with Kenneth Walker among running backs.
49:20So I feel like if you have Ashton Gentry, if you took the injury discount, you're feeling pretty good about where he is at right now.
49:27Okay, let's get to your third question heading into week two.
49:30Can Basial Tootin continue to stack games versus the defense last week that led the league in missed tackles?
49:36So for Basial Tootin, he had the third most forced missed tackles in week one, according to PFF, at seven at the running back position.
49:43And for as much as Liam Cohen this offseason talked about creating yards on your own, he had to love what he saw from Basial Tootin.
49:50I mean, there was a number of plays the left side and the right side that he would avoid an arm tackle
49:56in the backfield, get to the second level, you know, break a tackle there and then fall forward on final contact for an extra two to three yards.
50:04That's all we're asking for here, at least for me in the early season with Basial Tootin, like stack these weeks, stack these types of performances.
50:12The question is if he can do that against the Denver Broncos, again, who missed the most tackles in week one, albeit
50:18they face, you know, the immortal, the God that is Ken Walker, the third.
50:22I mean, he accounted for like 12 or the 14 of the 28 missed tackles that the Broncos had last week.
50:28So do they rebound or Matt, is this just a nice another feather in the cap of Basial Tootin on way to
50:34really being undeniable in people's fancy lineups and in this Jaguars backfield?
50:38I guess he didn't have like a monster day necessarily from a fantasy standpoint, but I am kind of surprised that there
50:44hasn't been more excitement about the way Basial Tootin played in week one.
50:48Like I know we briefly talked about this on stats versus film, which by the way, if you haven't checked it out,
50:54of course, check it out on the Josh and Hayden YouTube channel.
50:57If you're watching this on the Josh and Hayden YouTube channel, you can go pop over there and check it out.
51:03If you've ever watched a Marvel movie and been like, I wish that there was something this long, but about football, it's the program for you.
51:11Okay. Made for sickos, made by sickos. There's your tagline.
51:14So kind of you. So kind. It's a great.
51:16Listen, I love being a part of it. But again, one of the things that we briefly touched on was Basial Tootin.
51:23I thought going back and rewatching the offense, I thought he played extremely well.
51:26A lot of the notes that you had there, I shared as well.
51:30Now, Cleveland is Cleveland. But yeah, Denver, one of the most shocking.
51:34It's like, again, the defense almost gets a pass because of how bad the offense was, but missed 28 tackles against Kansas
51:40City Chiefs, allowing 247 yards after missed tackles. The most allowed by any defense in a game since at least 2018, as
51:46we're showing on the screen right now. Eight different defenders missed multiple tackles on the night.
51:51That's crazy. That's probably not going to happen two weeks in a row.
51:54I would be shocked like a Vance Joseph unit that's got a lot of players that we like and respect.
52:00But still, I think Basial Tootin and that offense coming in here, there's a lot of actually mismatches that favor Jacksonville against that Denver defense.
52:07Specifically, like how much man coverage Denver will play.
52:10Trevor Lawrence and Parker Washington in particular were awesome against man coverage in week one.
52:14Parker had the touchdown from the slot on the corner route against man coverage.
52:18He had another one where he was lined up as the isolated receiver on ball on the left side where it was
52:24like a big in route off play action. And then the third, like another reception was just like on a quicker out route.
52:31And I mean, he just all three receiver positions.
52:33He was great from it. They ran out the 30th amount of percentage of plays with three plus receivers.
52:39Parker wasn't like a full full time players, but 72% of the snaps in the first three quarters.
52:44But he matches up really well. Obviously, Jacob Myers can be awesome.
52:47And all that heavy personnel they can throw at you too, which they did in week one.
52:52A lot of mismatches there as well in favor of Jacksonville.
52:55Okay, a few things there. One, Colin, if you ever put up Hayden Wink's tweet on Basial Tootin, just know it's going to be negative.
53:03That's the bias. Okay. He even because on stats versus film, you were there when we talked about him.
53:08And then on the running back ranking show, he's like, actually, I rewatched it and I was too negative.
53:13Okay, so we won. We won that battle. We haven't won the war yet with Basial Tootin and Hayden Winks.
53:19Two, you brought up Parker Washington last year against this Denver Broncos defense when they were playing very well.
53:24Ten targets, six receptions, 145 yards and one touchdown.
53:27So to me, Matt, he is one of those players right now that is matchup proof.
53:32Just stick them in your wide receiver three spot.
53:34Heck, even wide receiver two and especially your flex.
53:37And let's roll and let's boogie with Parker Washington.
53:39And I love that the Jaguars were in 12 personnel for a league high 39% of their snaps in week one.
53:45Borkercher was a part of the rushing attack in terms of run blocking.
53:49And then that also activates someone like Britton Strange over the middle of the field, too, as a funneled pass catcher.
53:55So there's a whole bunch of things to hit on there.
53:58But I'm optimistic about this Jaguars offense and what they can do against Denver.
54:02The markets are not. The markets have this one heavily in favor of the Broncos with the Jaguars only projected for 21 and a quarter points.
54:09Well, last week, one of us on this show, we won't say who really disagreed with the markets on a particular contest
54:16and was proven mega, mega wrong by that. So we won't be taking any shots at the market on this week's Yahoo fantasy forecast preview show.
54:23But regardless, we'll move along from there. You know who gets the benefit from all this good stuff that we're talking about right now?
54:30The man we're showing on the screen. Okay, Trevor Lawrence.
54:33I mean, it's almost like you want to jump through the table for this guy, right, Josh?
54:38I mean, he just he looked he was also awesome in week one.
54:41I mean, I have so many positive Jaguars notes, the arm strength to get the football down the field, pushing it.
54:47He he really looks like the guy right now.
54:50I love the way this offense is constructed. They were number one in my static score, which is just like a blend
54:56of all of the cool, fun things we like right now from among play callers.
55:00The heavy personnel, the motion, the under center, the play action, all that stuff.
55:04I mean, I think Trevor Lawrence, I don't care about the matchup.
55:08I don't care about these projections that we're showing on the screen right now.
55:12He would be a top six quarterback on the slate for me heading into this game.
55:16I'm in on Parker Washington. The one thing I'm curious about with just the receiver room, and I mean, this wouldn't stop
55:23me from making any lineup decisions about any of these receivers.
55:26But, you know, last year, you could probably argue that like Parker Washington caught this team by surprise.
55:31They were like, all right, we're going to guard Brian Thomas Jr.
55:34with Patrick Sertan every single snap. And they obviously paid for that in that particular football game.
55:39You wonder if they change things up defensively this time, but they move Parker around to so many different spots.
55:45It's tough to do that with this guy. On the spectrum of sacrificial to designated, where does Brian Thomas Jr.
55:51fit on the X receiver platform? Well, he's kind of like he's kind of both.
55:55You know, he's kind of in the overlap right now based on the week one usage, right?
56:00Like because the route tree was pretty sacrificial and the role was pretty designated.
56:04And I still feel like you're not fully grasping the difference between the two, Josh.
56:08No, you're just trying to do a rebrand because sacrificial has a negative connotation to it.
56:13And and and you designate it is not. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
56:18Josh, Josh, Josh, designated is is also not great either.
56:21Their designated X is like what I've always wanted to see.
56:24And this is kind of like a like a Josh Downs thing, for example.
56:28Right. In a theoretical world, could you have, you know, like the little tiny guy like that, the Parker Washington.
56:33Can he be the Z and two receiver sets and Jacoby Myers is the X and two receiver sets?
56:39And then they bring on the designated X for three receiver sets.
56:42It's just it's it's more like a part time thing.
56:45You're just not on the field for every single snap so that that way you can.
56:50And now you in three receiver sets, you kick Parker into the slot and Jacoby Myers kicks over to Z.
56:55And then you bring in a designated X for those three receiver sets.
56:59You see what I'm saying? Like two different versions of the we only sort of kind of like this X receiver archetype.
57:05Yes. My interpretation of it was you hated getting quote tweeted or added whenever a head coach or play caller said, hey,
57:12this guy's going to play X for us. And everyone just met that with doom and gloom.
57:16And it was, hey, X receiver can actually be good on a team.
57:20Well, I hate that, too. But I mean, that's not but they're calling a guy designated X is also not like the that doesn't solve the problem.
57:28So, yes. No, this is. This is it. Yes.
57:30See, this is what I'm saying. The route tree.
57:33We got this. We got stats on the screen from Ian Harditz.
57:36Sacrificial field stretchers, wide receivers in week one. These dudes had the highest average route depth based on where they've made their first cut PFF.
57:43Number two on the list is Brian Thomas Jr.
57:46By the way, Jahan Dotson is wide receiver one.
57:49Like that hurts my feelings. Okay. Jahan Dotson, the sacrificial.
57:51Like how is John Dotson a sacrificial player? This is so bizarre.
57:55But he kind of has been throughout the course of his career, obviously.
57:59So, yeah, Brian Thomas Jr. is just in that tough spot right now where he's a pure boom bust fantasy play.
58:05I am at least the designated X part of it.
58:07Josh, I do think could change at some point and he could just be on the field more.
58:13I do wonder if they're just they're being cautious with this like shoulder injury that is continuing to bother him.
58:18I think that is complicated for BTJ as a fantasy play right now.
58:22Am I just allowed to say he's not a great fit in what Liam Cohen wants to do?
58:27Like, yeah, everything so so perfectly designed crossing routes over the middle of the field, all that type of stuff.
58:33And BTJ, just as we have seen, maybe that's not his best attribute.
58:36So or at the very least. There are better players on the roster that are better in that area than he is.
58:43Yeah, and I thought he was good in week one.
58:46Like I thought in isolation he played well. Like he thought I thought he played better than he did in last year in last season.
58:53Yeah, I mean, it's just difficult with him because I think there's a lot of things that can be true, which is
58:59that I think his rookie season was a little bit overinflated and he was also a very volatile prospect.
59:04And he ran really hot in his first season.
59:07And now he's run really cold in his second season.
59:10And now he might run lukewarm in his third season.
59:13Essentially, that's what happens to these volatile players. Is his career path, other than the injuries, somewhat similar to like Christian Watson,
59:19who ran super hot during that rookie season and then kind of.
59:22Yeah. What? What's up? Oh, you know, you know why the player I compared him to as a prospect was like the actualized version of Christian Watson.
59:30So, you know, there you go. Yeah. There you go.
59:33All right. I think that's I think I think that's right.
59:36No, but there's probably like another act for him.
59:39Just like Christian Watson and like he got he got really going in that fourth season.
59:43And I think there can be more to BTJ's game, but the nagging injuries are going to be just the thing that
59:49I think ruins this season for him. But I'm glad the good thing I think we can take away from this conversation
59:56besides BTJ doom and gloom is that we both really like Basial Tootin.
59:59And I think we're feeling we're feeling pretty good about that, even if Hayden Winks is trying to rain on the parade.
60:06Yeah. The only thing with Basial Tootin is a lot of the early work he had to do was make people or run around them in the backfield.
60:14Like this Jaguars offensive line is not great. And so that still might be, you know, a hindrance to him long term.
60:20And that's why maybe when he has a good game, it might not show up in the fantasy box score as a good game.
60:27But just overall, I didn't want him to fall flat in his face early in the season, because if he did fall
60:33flat in his face, then like that's when Chris Rodriguez becomes the dependable, hyper efficient guy that has a relationship with with Liam Cohen.
60:40So the longer we can like stiff arm that away, the more runway Basial Tootin gets to possibly be like the real
60:46number one running back on this team. All right, let's get to your fourth question here heading into week two.
60:52Okay. What wins? Pathetic defense or pathetic quarterback play?
60:54All right. So this is about the Carolina Panthers and their pathetic defense from week one.
60:59And let's say in the playoff game last year against the LA Rams, or is it the pathetic quarterback play that we're expecting?
61:05For the Atlanta Falcons. Now, this one's still a little bit in the air.
61:09We're recording this on Thursday afternoon. Cooper Rush, I think, has taken the snaps.
61:13I mean, this was a hilarious drill, by the way.
61:16I mean, just talk about like poor optics. I mean, it's like the galloping quarterbacks.
61:21Like, come on. Anyways, it seems like Cooper Rush is still going to be the starter for this team.
61:26Michael Penix has been practicing in full, but he's been like throwing to the twos and working on a side field.
61:32And it also seems totally up to Michael Penix if he is going to play.
61:36And Michael Penix understands that, hey, this is the last chance I'm going to get.
61:40But, which, by the way, when he faced the Panthers last year, he threw a pick six and like lost 30 to
61:47nothing, I believe, or something like that. Anyways. So, yeah, Matt, which one wins out?
61:51What you saw in week one from the Falcons offense or this Panthers defense that has better personnel than definitely what they put on the field out there?
61:59Yeah, I know you slammed Jira Everett pretty hard, and I think obviously you deserve it.
62:04You almost let up 60 points. Ben Johnson said he really wanted to go for 60 points in that game.
62:09I kind of wish he had just so we can call it a flat 60.
62:14I think I'll take what was a pathetic defense in week one over – I mean, I really just don't see a
62:20path forward for the Atlanta Falcons with Cooper Rush or, you know, unless Jack Strand is like a secret superstar or something.
62:26And even Michael Penix, it's like his first game back off of an ACL injury, and like he's supposed to be the savior.
62:33And it's like it's Michael Penix. It wasn't even a great consistent starter.
62:36Like, Penix will be good enough to save London to a degree.
62:40Well, I think it'll be enough to save Drake London, and he'll be enough to save Kyle Pitts to a degree.
62:46But even that, it's like I would still take the Panthers defense over the Falcons offense in that scenario.
62:51I don't really know what I'm supposed to say positive about what I saw from Atlanta in week one other than, oh, boy.
62:58Like, B. John Robinson is a great – is an elite running back and a PPR scam.
63:03Like, that's wonderful. That's it. It's B. John Robinson legit taking wide receiver snaps and getting screens from there and then making
63:09four people miss on every single carry, which, by the way, the Panthers defense was horrible at tackling running backs last week.
63:15But it truly is one of those things. If Cooper Rush plays and you keep B.
63:20John Robinson to a good day, then you should still win because they can't function outside of that.
63:25Like, Matt, I don't even know if you even looked at the Drake London usage where he was lining up or if
63:31it was kind of pointless and pathetic to do so.
63:34Yeah. I mean, I don't even know if it's worth it because, to me, it's going to be different once Michael Penix gets in there.
63:41And then Cal Pitts had a 50-plus yard gain down the field, down the seam, and beating Jalen Ramsey.
63:46And Cooper Rush underthrows him by about 10 yards, and it goes incomplete because of it.
63:51So it's – I mean, if Cooper Rush plays and the Panthers allow Drake London to get nine targets, five receptions, and 73 yards, I think they lose.
63:59I will have stomached the Drake London Falcons film by Friday evening, and I'll have that in my charting notebook.
64:05I haven't been able to stomach it yet because I actually do think it matters.
64:09I mean, it's 50 – oh, my God, it's 56 snaps.
64:12I got to watch 56 snaps of the week one Falcons.
64:15Don't you think this projection is aggressive? Yeah. If it's Cooper Rush, bro, it's definitely aggressive.
64:20If I had Drake London on a fantasy team, and I have at least – I am on one team that I
64:26drafted way too – at the Fantasy Football Expo.
64:29So it was like in July where I hadn't fully quite realized like how in trouble we were about the Falcons quarterback situation.
64:35Oh, my God. I would feel great if I got out of that game with five catches for 76 yards.
64:41I'd feel great about that. But, yeah, I actually do think it does matter the fact that Drake London lined up out
64:47wide on 84% of his snaps and that he was kind of used in a way that even when Michael Penix is
64:53going to get back, it's going to be very volatile in that usage.
64:57Can I quickly talk – ask you about the Panthers side of things?
65:01Like on the – if we're playing some believe or make-believe, Josh, do you believe or is it make-believe what you saw
65:07in week one with Bryce Young, your boy? Oh, I mean, I believe it.
65:11This was the reason why they made the change from Dave Canales to Brad Idzik was to be aggressive from the first
65:17quarter of the first game rather than legitimately wait until week 11 of last season before they threw the ball down the field.
65:24It just took way too long last year. We called it out in Stats for his film.
65:29Well, I did. Hayden could care less. And this is like where Bryce is at his best is actually attacking down the field.
65:35He obviously does not have the strongest arm. But hey – excuse me, I called you Hayden.
65:40But Matt, he reads the field. He sees the field.
65:43And he will willingly take these shots down the field on top of it.
65:47So they can go spread. I think they can go condensed.
65:50They can do some play action stuff on top of it.
65:53They can move him around. And I just think Canales was way too tentative.
65:57And on top of that, that is more difficult to do when you just have Ted Aron McMillan and then you have
66:03like Hunter Renfro and Xavier Leggett as your wide receiver one and two.
66:07It took I think until week eight of last season for Jalen Coker to play over 60% of the snaps.
66:13And so if you have T-Mac and Jalen Coker out there, you can attack every single blade of grass.
66:18I was a very – I mean people were just like not open to the Panthers' offense at all in fantasy football this season.
66:25And like I get it from what Bryce Young has shown.
66:28But again, we agree too much. Like I shared a lot of those same notes about Brad Edzik.
66:33And like that is why they – I mean listen.
66:36We know we share some notes here on the Carolina Panthers and the whole deal.
66:41But I will never admit to it. But there's just a little hint at it.
66:45Like this is why they wanted to make that change for sure.
66:48And a lot of pretty interesting changes schematically in week one in addition to the success.
66:53Their play action went from 21st in 2025 to fifth in week one.
66:56So static score 23 to 15. Their pace score went from 30 to five.
67:00Like big improvements in week one for the Carolina Panthers.
67:03So I think there is some sustainability to the Bryce Young just playing a little bit more like Alabama Bryce.
67:09And letting that thing fly down to two big boy really good wide receivers.
67:13Okay, question number five. What do we got heading into week two?
67:16Okay, we got to confirm my priors or at least pray for them.
67:20Is this the breakout spot for the Eagles running game?
67:23And I mean Saquon Barkley. They get the Tennessee Titans in week two.
67:27They are seven point favorites in week one against the Washington Commanders.
67:30He was hit behind the line of scrimmage on seven of his opening 12 runs.
67:34Landon Dickerson basically benched himself and put himself on IR.
67:37He was also one of the worst players I saw in week one.
67:41It's tough because, you know, he's been part of Super Bowl teams and all that.
67:45But he's been banged up. He's been unhealthy. So they'll have a new left guard in there.
67:50Matt, the age old saying of you're only as good as your weakest link.
67:54I think that is probably going to be true here, especially for, you know, a rushing scheme that is new and on top of it.
68:01So I am still believing that Saquon Barkley is going to pay off in a big way.
68:06Week one did not look good in that department.
68:09I still think Saquon as an individual looks good.
68:11And I'm just hoping for competent to good offensive line play in all five spots in front of him.
68:17And this is the opportunity to do that against the Titans.
68:20Yeah, this is definitely the opportunity to do it.
68:22Can I address just the Jeffrey Simmons quote we're showing on the screen here about we just need to make Jalen Hurts be a QB?
68:29I think Jeffrey Simmons is an elite NFL player and is fantastic at his job.
68:34I would have said a different quote just considering what's going on on his team right now from an offensive standpoint.
68:40I would have maybe considered a different quote. But anyways, I just yeah, I think it's going to work out for the
68:46Eagles in this game and the next game because they're playing the Titans and the Bears.
68:50I don't know if it's going to work out long term for their run game, Josh, but I almost kind of think
68:57we really will have to do a good job divorcing the results from what it looks like on tape for this Eagles
69:03team, which you kind of sort of had to do in week one anyways.
69:07Like, listen, I'll say this even if and we're going to talk about Don Tavian Wicks in the mailbag segment.
69:13I'll even say this as a Wicks guy, like a little bit of a lucky week one result there for him.
69:19He catches the clear out route and then he routes up Mikey Sanders still puts him in a blender, which is great.
69:25I love being able to talk positively about Don Tavian Wicks, but they're kind of going through some transitions with the tight ends.
69:31They're like Grand Capeterra is on IR. Eli Stowers doesn't exist and he's on IR.
69:36I mean, at this point, like they're they're going to be like a three receiver team, which I don't think was really like their ideal outcome.
69:43So I feel like we'll have to do it.
69:46I mean, I'm confident in Barkley and I'm confident the run game results wise will be good.
69:51But process wise, Josh, I still think it might be a little bit of a work in progress.
69:56So the Eagles face third down on a league high 70 percent of their runs, excuse me, of their sets of downs in week one.
70:03The league average was about 44 percent. So that's a negative.
70:06We don't want to see as many third downs.
70:09But on the positive end for Saquon, he still accounted for 80 percent of the backfield touches, which was running back six across the league.
70:16You know, we always talk about the Vikings defense and Brian Flores being difficult to run on.
70:20I wonder as we go through the season, Matt, if we're going to say the same thing about the Washington commanders defense
70:27that the Eagles face in week one because of Durante Jones and where he derives his scheme from of how, you know,
70:33they muddy all the gaps and cause some havoc up front.
70:36Again, especially with the new blocking scheme. I think the Eagles know what they're getting at this Titans defensive line.
70:42And especially I think last week with the Jets, they had one drive where they ran the ball like 14 plays out
70:48of 19 on a singular drive that ended in a field goal.
70:52I would love 10 Saquon Barkley runs on on one drive.
70:55I will easily take that this week. You know, we know you would.
70:58I mean, this is this is one of your big flagplanes of the year, Josh.
71:03Landon Dickerson, you got to hope you got to hope it's addition by subtraction there for a guy who's been a really good player.
71:09So we will definitely be monitoring that situation. But I would be starting Eagles players with confidence this week.
71:15Devontae Smith included, who even said after the game, like they shaded a lot of coverage his way and that his other guys made plays.
71:22I think he's going to have a big week to against this Titans defense.
71:26Your sixth question is about the New Orleans Saints.
71:29I'll just quickly note this is not the guy we're talking about, but Chris Olave popped up on the injury report of the hamstring today.
71:36According to Nick Underhill, it's not expected to be a problem, just a precautionary measure.
71:40So that's good because my God, Chris Olave was absolutely cooking in week one, but it was a little bit cooking, medical
71:46tent, cooking, medical tent, cooking, medical tent. So we'll see about that.
71:50But otherwise, really good spot for Chris Olave in fantasy the rest of the way.
71:54He's going to be at one of the best picks I think you could make if he can stay healthy.
72:00But Josh, what is your sixth question heading into week two?
72:03Yeah, what's going on in the Saints backfield? Travis Adrian got a ton of money from New Orleans and for agency.
72:09Then in week one, he played running back 18 in terms of snap percentages.
72:13He ran a route on only 39 percent of dropbacks, which was running back 24 across the league.
72:18I gave my theory on like the week one weirdness.
72:21I kind of wonder if he's dealing with something on top of this.
72:24Kendra Miller had both touches from the backfield inside the 10 yard line, and he converted one of them into an eight yard touchdown.
72:31That's tough. And the only way that Travis HN got home was they realized he could catch the football in the second
72:38half and the Lions defense isn't that good. Now you get the Baltimore Ravens who look unreal on both sides of the
72:44ball, especially on defense under Jesse mentor. And you're not going to have that availability of, hey, we're going to not do
72:50well and start out slow in the first half and then turn on the second half.
72:55So this Travis HN thing, if it still is like a split backfield in week two, Matt, this already looks like one
73:01of the worst picks on the board. I think, oh, if this holds up, it's brutal for Travis HN.
73:06Mikel Moore, as we're showing on the screen here, says it's important to rotate these guys.
73:11It could just be like, hey, we're starting we're starting this way and it doesn't hold up this way.
73:16Right. Like that's very live for this. But I also kind of wonder if they just like these other running backs, you
73:23know, like Kendra Miller is a guy that's talented and has, you know, wasn't a fan with the Dennis Allen staff.
73:29But at the same time, like was a, you know, a talented player and I thought, you know, has had some moments when he's been available.
73:36So there's definitely like what's your level of panic if you have Travis HN right now?
73:40I admittedly didn't draft. I don't think a single Travis HN team, so I haven't really thought about this.
73:46But what's your level of panic on him right now?
73:49Yeah, I mean, we had a show in preseason where it was about eight players that Hayden, I disagree on the most.
73:55Travis HN was one of those. He loved him.
73:58I was kind of sour on it. And one of the reasons was I think kind of like luck boxed into a whole bunch of points last season.
74:06Per Rich Rebar, the worksheet, Travis HN led all players last season and fancy points scored when the drive started on the opponent's side of the field.
74:13And we know the Jaguars created a lot of turnovers last year at 82 points.
74:18The next closest was Jonathan Taylor at 52 points.
74:20That means Travis HN scored 30 more points in the next closest player just based on where the drive started after a turnover.
74:27So, yeah, I think he's an OK talent that has gotten by based on like a pure and huge amount of volume.
74:33And if he's not getting as much volume on the team, albeit they were in 91 plays and even half of that is still a lot.
74:40That's just not what people signed up for after looking at his contract.
74:44And a lot of the justification I've heard was like, well, they paid him all that money.
74:49Like they'll start giving him touches soon. It's like, well, NFL teams do weird stuff all the time.
74:54I don't love appealing to the contract once we are into the season, you know, once we've already seen a little bit of rotation.
75:01So I'm very fascinated to see if Alvin Kamara can play in this game and like what role he eventually has in this whole rotation as well.
75:09So I don't want to say it's totally over for Travis HN because I actually do think he's a perfectly solid NFL back.
75:15And this is an offense I want to be exposed to, but could end up certainly going down if this is the rotation as a small loss player.
75:23So very fascinated to watch him here in this week to slate of games.
75:27OK, we're going to take a quick break. We come back.
75:30We're talking about no one's games of the week.
75:33We'll get into that right after this. All right, we're back and let's get into it.
75:37Welcome to no one's games of the week. Like, it just really gets you in the mood to talk some football, doesn't it?
75:44Remember, folks, this is the segment for sickos. This is where we talk about the three worst games on the slate and
75:50why you should care about it from a fantasy football standpoint.
75:53Let's start off with a team that was in the Super Bowl last year.
75:57Josh Steelers at Patriots, I think, has to count as one of the no one's games of the week because I can't
76:04find like a single fantasy football analyst. It's like, well, here's what's going on in the Steelers that you need to care about.
76:10So curious if you have anything there. And then there's a lot going on, actually, with the New England Patriots.
76:16So, Josh, Steelers thoughts. Well, on Steelers thoughts, you know, for a team that brought in Rico Dowdle and had Jalen Warren on the roster, they were what?
76:24Top three in neutral pass rate in week one.
76:26And yeah, I mean, DK Metcalf having all the air yards and little production to show for it.
76:31Some of it his fault with OPI, some of it the defensive spot with DPIs and some of it just, you know, missed targets.
76:38And then you have Pat Frymuth popping up as like a real deal tied in.
76:43I think people should be taking seriously in leagues out there.
76:46And they're going to, you know, reshuffle some offensive linemen here and there.
76:49I don't know, Matt. It feels like the Patriots just played like three weeks ago.
76:54And so they've almost been forgotten about how bad that ended when, you know, Drake may threw the game away, at least
77:00to send it to overtime with a field goal.
77:02And now you get the Steelers defense, which, yes, they're facing Cooper Rush, but you have some really fun pieces.
77:08And TJ Watt, Alex Highsmith, like Herbig is playing some linebacker on top of this now, too.
77:13So they're going to put it on these tackles and the offensive line in order for, you know, the Steelers to have a chance.
77:20On the Steelers offense, by the way, just to put some of the numbers behind what Josh was talking about here.
77:26Second in pass rate over expectation, seventh in seconds per play, 32nd in rate of motion overall.
77:31So we've got a 16th in three plus wide receiver sets.
77:34This is just this is this is Green Bay circa what?
77:372014, 2015. And that's what we've got here. Nate had a full crash out.
77:41I'll call it. I'll call like 75 percent of a crash out on today's preview show for Football 301.
77:46Just about why this team is it's it's built to be like a ground and pound run team.
77:51And and yet and yet that's what they're doing.
77:54So he was pretty upset about that. So you guys can go check that out for more Steelers thoughts.
77:59But it's just bizarre, too, because to Nate's point, like the way they're structuring the passing game, it's like we got it.
78:06We got like get guys in space, get yards after catch.
78:09And they don't have any yards after catch receivers.
78:11It's quite strange. And in this one, DK Metcalf and Christian Gonzalez are going to be seeing each other a whole bunch.
78:18So like your secondary and tertiary pass catchers are really going to need to step up here.
78:23So is it Michael Pittman who you're about to say?
78:25Is it Pat Frymuth? Don't tell me it's any of the other names unless we're talking Jeremy Bernard.
78:31But he barely played. And we barely played. And yeah, Roman Wilson.
78:34OK, I mean, it's no. It's no. Yeah, it's such this offense is just.
78:38And like, I don't think you can start either one of the running backs either when they're second in pass rate or expected.
78:44The only way there's going to be a fantasy viable starter here is if one of these guys gets hurt.
78:50And like, that's unfortunate to say it's crazy. OK, Patriots side of things.
78:54The Steelers defense played 100 percent of their snaps in zone coverage in week one.
78:58100 percent of their snaps in zone coverage in week one.
79:01And I think that's really tough for this team.
79:04Obviously, not having A.J. Brown for four to six weeks is going to be tough no matter what.
79:09But I think it's really difficult against this group of receivers here because, man, Josh, the receiver play was so slight.
79:15It was sloppy in week one for this team.
79:18And like Pop Douglas has always been a guy that is a better man beater than a zone beater, which is why
79:24he's like an odd fit as a high volume slot receiver.
79:27I think just Matt Collins is Matt Collins. Like Romeo Dobbs is another guy that's better in these like one on one isolated situations.
79:34They're kind of moving him all around. I think the Patriots offense is going to hit a real slog in this game
79:40unless Travian Henderson can come back and like really form a dynamic one to punch with her.
79:45Monterrey Stevenson. Yeah, I mean, look, Drake may led the NFL in what 10, 20 plus yard passes last year in terms
79:51of the rate that they were successful. And that was with a whole bunch of nobodies.
79:56And you bring in A.J. Brown, you're like, oh, yeah, we can just do that again.
80:00Matt, it's not that easy when you play, you know, the easiest schedule last year.
80:05And it's just not going to be sticky. Romeo Dobbs up here.
80:08If A.J. Brown was healthy, Romeo Dobbs wouldn't be playing.
80:11I mean, that was the other huge revelation from week one of, hey, we pay this guy money.
80:16And yet he's like a very, very, very part time player.
80:19So he has to step up and win in a big way.
80:22And when the ball's thrown in his direction, actually hold on to it here.
80:26So I'm fascinated to see if Josh McDaniels has changed some things after their week one performance.
80:31Because, Matt, I don't know if you saw this, too.
80:34There were some pitchforks already out for Josh McDaniels after week one.
80:38And I also want to say, like, hey, that was a Seahawks defense.
80:41So things can get back on track here in a hurry in week two.
80:45It can. And I just wonder if they have the personnel to do it.
80:49And I don't know if I try. I'm a little concerned about Josh McDaniels at this point.
80:54Like, it just it feels like a very like none of it's like, oh, my God, I can't believe you're running this stuff.
81:01It's just very it's a little stale at this stage.
81:04And especially with the receiver usage and without A.J.
81:06Brown, like that. You're right. That was the bet was we're just going to run everything back.
81:11But we're going to have A.J. Brown now. And now they don't have A.J.
81:15Brown. And I'm like, I have Drake May on one fantasy team where admittedly it was a slow draft.
81:20And I timed out on the clock. OK, so that I ended up with Drake May.
81:25I'm like, I think I picked up Jordan Love off the waiver wire.
81:29I'm going to start Jordan Love over Drake May in week two.
81:32I wanted to bring this up in the expert draft that we had in the expert league.
81:37I have already thought about this in moments like in the shower before going to bed of there was a 2v2 that
81:43I had that I was at the turn. That's what you're thinking about?
81:47I'm going to take him like Lamar, Lamar Jackson and a tight end.
81:51And instead, I took Sam Laporta and then Drake May.
81:53So I could have Lamar Jackson instead of Drake May.
81:56But I prioritize the tight end. And let's say some regrets are being had at this moment.
82:01Perhaps. So what we're saying is Max actually had the best draft with Trey McBride and Josh Allen.
82:06He's going to dunk on us at the end of the year because he just can't.
82:11Not the points look like it right now. Fair enough.
82:14OK, let's move on. OK, next game here. Browns.
82:16At Bucs. The Browns will probably be a staple in this segment every single week of the season.
82:21I mean, my God. I would have put the Titans in here too.
82:25Can we retire them at some point though? Can we retire them?
82:28We did that last year for the Titans because I think the 2025 Titans were just the least fantasy relevant team of all time.
82:35I kept saying. And then the moment I retired them from this segment, Tony Pollard actually had this amazing finish to the season.
82:42Yes. And so there is that. So that's the risk we run here.
82:46But I think if they start to Sean Watson in week three, we're going to retire.
82:50We're not going to talk about them again. But I have a feeling that that will not be the case.
82:56And that will at least make us talk about them.
82:59What will it look like with Sugar Sanders? For now, I don't think we really have to say anything about Cleveland, Josh.
83:05Like it is what it is. Can I say one thing?
83:08Sure. So people drafted Quinch on Judkins. This is a rough matchup for him.
83:1216 and a half point projection against Vita Vea and that Bucks defensive front.
83:16The stats might not show it, Matt. I thought Casey Conception looked awesome.
83:20And there weren't that many routes, you know, that he was targeted on.
83:23But, you know, there was one that he was the, you know, point man in the stack that he did like a little head fake.
83:31Like he was going with an over route versus Jordan Lewis, who then looked back at the quarterback.
83:36He broke it outside. Great catch. Obviously, Casey fumbled in one of these situations, too.
83:40And then he was also missed for what would have been a deep, deep, deep touchdown because I don't know if Deshaun Watson could have gotten it there.
83:48But he was hit after taking like a 10 step drop on the back.
83:52So like that's a pretty difficult defense that Casey Conception was doing that against.
83:56And obviously this Bucks defense has hopefully improved since last year.
83:59But Casey Conception had some real moments last year that might not show up in the box for last week, I should say.
84:06Yeah, I totally agree. Look, I feel about the same as I did for the Cleveland Browns ever since they drafted Casey
84:12Conception and Denzel Boston, which is like this is going to be awesome.
84:16Those two guys are great. The problem is, you know, their quarterback stinks and it's hopeless.
84:20As long as Watson's back there, it's completely hopeless.
84:23Maybe it'll be slightly less hopeless if Chador gets in there.
84:26I at least want to be open to that week three home opener against Carolina Panthers.
84:30I still my prediction was as soon as they said they're going to start Watson is they're going to be starting Chador in that game.
84:37Will that be a game that you can play Quentin Johnston?
84:41Maybe we'll probably talk. We'll probably honestly, Josh, we'll probably talk about that in this segment next week.
84:46Yeah, actually, I won't be on the show next week, so it'll be up to Boone.
84:50So there you go. OK, on the Bucks side of things here.
84:54This is an offense that I feel obviously just just screwed itself consistently with fumbles and mistakes and just just sloppy bad football.
85:00However, Josh, I came away from it feeling really good about a lot of the players involved here.
85:05Like I'm not good. Buka's role was excellent. Exactly what I was imagining moving around the formation.
85:10You know, very Drake London esque in Zach Robinson's offense.
85:13I think he's set up for a really nice season.
85:16I think Bucky Irving looked really good, had a very not had a good receiving role.
85:21Like Bucky has to be one of the biggest week one winners.
85:24I think both of those guys should be in your starting lineups.
85:27Now, admittedly, everybody else, I I that's kind of where the optimism, you know, stops like Baker.
85:32Maybe you can play in super flex. But other than that, like I think these are the two guys in this offense, Bucky and Mecca.
85:39And I feel like both are going to go down as excellent picks here.
85:43I mean, I will say if you follow the math and the formula that a home favorite expects score 25 points, we
85:50should be wanting to play Baker Mayfield here. And, you know, the personnel is somewhat the same.
85:54I'll be it. You don't have Miles Garrett anymore.
85:57And in his absence, you have Jared verse. But there was a huge change in how this defense played this year versus
86:03like with the Jim Jorts led defense. You know, the tackling was horrific.
86:07Carson Swestinger was an awesome linebacker last year, and he looked kind of lost.
86:11In week one. And maybe we can, you know, set that up here with Liam Cohen at the same time that Zach
86:17Robinson, Liam Cohen, some overlap here in coaching history and coaching trees.
86:21So, hey, Zach, just copy the homework, the test that Liam Cohen just turned in and just put it in here in week two.
86:27And we should have a lot of success for this Bucks offense.
86:31Yeah, the only thing is the offense that Tampa ran out in week one was definitely pretty different than what Jacksonville did
86:37in week one, where there was no heavy personnel for Tampa Bay.
86:41But it did look very much like the 2024 Liam Cohen offense, where there's a lot of screens.
86:46There's all this motion, putting guys in conflict. And your primary pass catcher at that point was Chris Godwin for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
86:53This version of Chris Godwin cannot be a primary pass catcher.
86:56He's like merely a supporting actor and still blocking.
86:58So blocking and give a lot of effort there.
87:01So there's that for Chris Godwin. But it'll basically be a Mecca, Buka, and Bucky Irving I think will be really, really good in this offense as well.
87:09Okay. Let's get to our final game here in this section.
87:12Dolphins at 49ers. I do feel like the Dolphins could be a little bit of a feature in this segment as well.
87:18Anything you want to say about any Dolphins players before?
87:21Okay, let me ask you this. How? Because we're going to talk about Caleb Douglas in the next section.
87:26How banged is Devon Achan? What's your optimism on Devon Achan right now?
87:30What? He had 14 touches last week. Is that correct?
87:33This team is only... I thought they were going to give him enough touches until he pukes or whatever.
87:38Exactly. Yeah. I'd puke after 14. They only projected for 16 points in this game.
87:43They are 13.5 point underdogs to the San Francisco 49ers that just shut down the LA Rams.
87:48You have also like Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw at the second level.
87:51Fred Warner can match up, I think, quite well when they try to do some funky stuff with Devon Achan as they did last week.
87:58This was the fear, right? Like, I heard from a lot of people that were drafting Devon Achan that, oh, at least
88:05Bobby Slowick was coaching on the staff last year and he can just kind of run the same things.
88:10And they kind of did run some similar things.
88:13But Matt, you know, if there was always the coach that was replacing the OC that was just being promoted from within
88:19and that worked out the same way every single time, then, you know, there wouldn't be as much turnover in the NFL.
88:25And there is. And so I am worried. Just to answer your question, I am worried about Devon Achan.
88:31The first two weeks might look miserable for him.
88:33I think you can run on this Niners team.
88:36I just don't know how often you're going to be in run first game scripts.
88:40That's really the problem here with Devon Achan. So I hope I'm wrong.
88:44I hope it's a little bit of a better week two for Achan.
88:47But this was certainly the warning sign. Yeah. By the way, if we did this.
88:52Oh, you just promote the guy on staff. Wouldn't have been talking about Zach Robinson in the last segment because that's what they did with Josh Grizzer.
88:59Josh Grizzer handled all the third downs. He was the pass game coordinator.
89:03Well, he had to handle everything else. It didn't look so good in Tampa Bay last year.
89:08Okay. On the other side of this, San Francisco 49ers here.
89:11Things are looking pretty good for the Niners from, you know, everything but the injury front perspective.
89:16Stribblings out. He'll be out 10 weeks. Jake Tonjes on IR.
89:1910 weeks. I mean, God, what a waste of all of our times in August.
89:23But alas, what can you do? So the guys who are remaining here for San Francisco, Josh, expectations for the Kalen Black, Christian McCaffrey split.
89:30Anything you want to say about the receivers? Floor is yours.
89:34I believe in this split in the backfield. I know some might attribute it to they're playing in Australia.
89:39Some might attribute it to, oh, he was getting cramps.
89:42Christian McCaffrey. I lean more towards this, you know, plan playing out perfectly in that when CMC got the ball, he looked explosive.
89:48He looks spry and he looked good. Much better than he did last year when the underlying metrics pointed him to being
89:55one of the worst running backs in the NFL.
89:57So, Matt, from a fantasy football perspective, we obviously would prefer what happened last year, right?
90:02Even if he was bad on a per-touch basis.
90:04Like, we want the running back one in expected points week after week, who then turns out to be like the running
90:11back two or running back three, versus a guy here that was a running back, I think, 12 in projected points, albeit looks a lot better per touch.
90:19But from the 49ers standpoint, this is good. Like, Kalen Black has some skills in terms of being an athletic north and south runner.
90:25He's also pretty good in pass protection, was the best guy in the class in that department.
90:30So, while I don't think Kalen Black is going to out-carry CMC on a weekly basis, I still believe it's going to
90:36be like closer to 65-35 or 60-40, which is a huge difference than what we've gotten in the CMC era in San Francisco.
90:43Yeah, Kyle Shanahan said he was surprised that Kalen Black out-carried Christian McCaffrey, which I always think is funny when the play
90:49caller says that after he goes, I am surprised by that.
90:52But, you know, it is what it is. The quote that we're showing on the screen here right now, which, shout out
90:59to the producers, I was slacking them this in the middle of the show, and they're like, oh, we already have it ready to go.
91:06So, what do you know? These guys are good at their job, and I'm mediocre at my job at best.
91:12Okay. This is why I really believe this is going to continue to happen, Josh, because this is what I wrote in
91:18my piece in reaction to this on Thursday night last week.
91:21I think Christian McCaffrey is going to totally welcome this development.
91:24Here's the quote if you're listening to us on the audio side.
91:27McCaffrey says, I look at some of the duos last year, like Bijan and Tyler Algier, Gibbs and Montgomery.
91:33It was such a good way to keep people fresh.
91:36He's good enough to do that in reference to Kalen Black.
91:39I remember doing shows with Austin Eckler over the years, and him just, like, trying to manifest a second pitch in that backfield.
91:45Like, truly, every single guy is like, this could be, he's like, he wanted someone to take that work.
91:51Who was the Northwestern back? Just Justin something? I don't know.
91:54There was a lot. There was a lot. Yeah, there was a lot of guys.
91:58There was Josh Kelly. Was it Josh Kelly? I remember.
92:01Yes, I remember. Josh Kelly. There was a Texas A&M guy here, too.
92:05Whatever. Anyways, there was a lot of different players.
92:07None of them became as good as Justin Jackson.
92:10Justin Jackson. There you go. Justin Jackson. Isaiah Spiller.
92:13That's another one. Okay, there we go. Anyways, none of those guys became half as good as Kalen Black looked in week one.
92:19I'll tell you that. Kalen Black, I think he definitely is enough to keep McCaffrey fresh.
92:24I think McCaffrey wants to stay fresh. That was my sense talking to him in February.
92:28Like, I think he knows he's entering into a new chapter of his career.
92:32Good to see. Like, we want McCaffrey around for the entire season.
92:36The bottom line is, these guys are playing the Dolphins this week.
92:39You're starting McCaffrey. You could maybe play Kalen Black as a what-the-heck flex, but I think you're, you think yes?
92:45Well, so I've kind of been thinking of Kalen Black's census game as Cal Monungi adjacent of what we got last year.
92:51Okay. Right? So in games where the Chicago Bears were projected for 27, 26 and a half, 28 points, if they get
92:57to that point, you can paint the narrative in your mind, paint the picture of, okay, they're so far ahead in the
93:04fourth quarter or even the second half of the fourth quarter that, hey, there's a decent chance that both running backs get touchdowns.
93:10So look, if you are having to start Kalen Black in your lineups in week two, your team is already effed a little bit.
93:17But I think Kalen Black in the future, when the San Francisco 49ers are projected for 29 and a half, I think
93:23that is an environment where Kalen Black, you could, again, paint a picture of him farting for a touchdown.
93:29Yeah. There you go. Did you say farting for a touchdown?
93:32Yeah, that's a Hayden Winksism. Sorry. Sorry. All right.
93:34Well, we're ready for that one. Farting into the end zone.
93:37I like that better than falling into the end zone.
93:40I hate when people say, I just hope he falls into the end zone.
93:44Nobody falls into the end zone, but they could fart into the end zone.
93:48I do like that. When DeJong Struggling was down on the field in week one, the route percentage went Demarcus Robinson, 77%.
93:55Mike Evans, 73%. Mike Evans is in an excellent spot in this game.
93:58You're playing him with confidence. Debo Samuel, 64%. I think you can mess around and play some Debo Samuel if you're desperate.
94:04100%. Mega desperate. I guess you could play Demarcus Robinson, who had two catches for 50 yards and a touchdown when Struggling
94:11was not on the field in week one. So there is that.
94:14Okay. We are going to go to our next week break.
94:17We come back. We're taking your questions in the Toyota mailbag.
94:20We'll get into that right after this. All right, we're back and welcome to the fantasy hotline presented by Toyota, the official automotive partner of the NFL.
94:28Every single week, we reach out to you all, the people, our people, and ask you a pressing fantasy question heading into every week's slate of games.
94:36This week, because unfortunately it's topical, wide receiver injuries are everywhere.
94:39We asked you which wide receiver off your bench you are considering starting if you have to replace some big name guys with injuries.
94:46Three players that are certainly on our radar from an injury standpoint right now, Josh.
94:50I'm like, all of these are guys I love.
94:53This stinks. Nico Collins, Lad McConkie, Zay Flowers. What are we doing here?
94:56I would expect all three of those guys to not play this week.
95:00I hope I'm wrong. Personally, I very much hope I'm wrong because I have basically all of them on a bunch of different teams.
95:07So we'll see how that goes. But we got to help the people here find some replacement guys, Josh.
95:12Well, do we throw out a replacement? I mean, mine would be.
95:16No, you're not. You're not. You're not throwing them out.
95:19The people are throwing them out. I just didn't know if you had any thoughts on those three players here.
95:24So, yeah. Just quickly. Zay Flowers was the fastest human alive in week one and getting five catches for 150 yards and
95:31a touchdown in the first half is pretty incredible stuff.
95:33Like so many play callers kind of got it wrong or looked out of sync in week one on their new teams.
95:40And Declan Doyle looked freaking awesome to the point that he might start shining up that resume in late October for like
95:46the Tennessee Titans are one of these jobs as well.
95:49Yeah, it was awesome to see Declan Doyle and Lamar Jackson embrace after the game and Declan saying, I love calling plays for you, man.
95:56They love working with each other. It's not going to be a long relationship, though, fellas.
96:00So don't get comfortable with it. They're going to have to do the promote somebody on the staff and it won't work out in 2027 moves.
96:08So there you go. They're working out. By the way, the Ravens are working out Brandon Cooks today.
96:13So they arrived at the Brandon Cooks section of the proceedings very, very early because of that Zay Flowers injury.
96:19Okay, our first submission here comes in from Tom underscore Sturdivant says in a three wide receiver league.
96:24I may roll the dice with Dontavian Wicks over Devon Vele.
96:27And that's even after watching every Packers game for years.
96:30What do you think? Do we like Dontavian Wicks against the Titans as a replacement for injury or Devon Vele on that fast paced Saints offense more?
96:37I'll say this for Vele. Uh, anyone has upside if you run a route on like 92% of dropbacks on 91 plays, you know?
96:44And that's how Devon Vele is really fantasy relevant.
96:47Again, I will just point to it took them until the second half of last week to spark anything on offense.
96:53And that is just going to be so much more difficult to do against this Ravens defense.
96:58I would start Vele if you want. I would just start Vele in general over Dontavian Wicks.
97:03What do you think? Like I, it's tough. I mean, the, the matchup is the same tier, much more.
97:08It's the same tier. I think you're probably hoping to get on base with Vele where if you're looking for like a
97:14high hit, I think that's probably Wicks. Just the matchup is better.
97:18Uh, you know, route participation wise, they'll probably be pretty clear, but the, the Saints are likely to run more plays.
97:24The problem is they're playing the Ravens defense. I happen to think that Ravens defense is going to be awesome all season long.
97:30So I'll probably side to Wicks. Vele though is a really good play in his own right.
97:35And I think, by the way, I think Vele, like he gets, gets, get dumped on because he's like an old player.
97:41He's pretty good. Like he's a totally solid NFL, uh, wide receiver and fits that offense quite well, uh, in his own right.
97:48Okay. Next one comes in from at doc crackles nailed it with Zay being questionable and probably should be rested a week.
97:54TBH. I'm vacillating. Good use of word vacillating between Devante Adams and Alec Pierce in a PPR format.
97:59Can't believe I wrote the last sentence, but staffy looked jet lag and no red zone looks for Devante Adams is concerning.
98:06Worth noting, uh, that Pierce was a DNP on Thursday.
98:08Don't really know what that's about. Uh, would you go with Devante Adams or Alec Pierce in replacement of Zay flowers?
98:14I'm going to go with Devante Adams. I mean, when the Rams are projected to score 28 points, they are seven and
98:21a half point favorites right now on the giants.
98:23We know that doesn't mean anything for them though.
98:26Um, then yeah, I mean, Devante's red zone usage in zone usage last year was so elite.
98:31I understand it didn't work in week one, but I guess my question is what did work in, in week one, the
98:37big fear for, for the Rams is, Hey, can our offensive line hold up to all the pass rushers that the, you know, uh, giants throw out there?
98:45Um, I mean, there were some phenomenal pass rush looks last week, but I'll still side with the old man and Devante
98:51versus Alec Pierce, who I think is kind of being like a practice pitch count as we go along.
98:57But Matt, even with him, he gets some nice in breaker targets last week, but you could tell he was maybe 85%
99:03of what he was where he couldn't like create that last.
99:06Sliver of separation in order to separate from like Marlon Humphrey and, uh, the other corner that escapes my mind, what his name is right now.
99:13Nate Wiggins, Nate Wiggins. Thank you. Yeah. A tough spot to in Kansas city against the chiefs defense that just took, uh, the Broncos.
99:20Yeah, no, not, not to a good place. Okay.
99:23Uh, I agree with you on Devante Adams. I am really interested, Josh.
99:26Like you could not talk about two teams that had just like diametrically opposed outputs in week one between the giants and
99:33the Rams in terms of one, obviously based on what I said last week, really shocked me in the giants and the Rams.
99:39Like, I kind of want to just throw that game in the trash.
99:43And yet, yeah, Stafford did look, he looked jet lagged, maybe looked old.
99:47The offensive line didn't look great. And the entire team looked like a operation that could have used the first or second
99:53round pick that actually was going to contribute to the field.
99:56But final point, isn't this the reason why the Rams did their travel thing in terms of like going in just for 24 hours?
100:03It wasn't necessarily for that game. It was for the future games.
100:06So they don't have to like adjust back to this.
100:09So, Hey, maybe that leads to the week two performance being a lot better than week one.
100:14Well, that's what, that's what the water carriers are saying now.
100:17That's what the water carriers are saying now, but the water carriers before the game actually told us that no, it was
100:23the master plan was going to work out in week one and it didn't.
100:27So yeah, we'll see. Okay. Next one comes in from at team Morrison 76.
100:31I'm debating on benching Drake London because of his quarterback fair for either of Quentin Johnston or Antonio Williams in PPR.
100:37Let's let me first just say about Antonio Williams.
100:40Yeah, I mean, that's way too, it's way too cute to do that.
100:44The, to play him ahead of Drake London. I totally get it because Antonio Williams looked fricking awesome in week one.
100:50I thought he would look really explosive, separated. I was like, thank God, like they need this guy.
100:55He's playing late in the preseason. I don't care.
100:57Like, I know this guy is a good player and he actually looked like more explosive than I thought he would have on the NFL field.
101:05I really liked his film in week one. He's still not playing enough for you to count on him really in almost
101:11any fantasy format, but certainly not in replacement of Drake London.
101:14Do you think it's any one? What are your thoughts on Williams?
101:18And two, do you think it's any closer between QJ and Drake London?
101:21If this was Stefan Diggs instead of Antonio Williams, I might lean in that direction versus the Cowboys defense.
101:27But Antonio Williams, like you said, is one of those rookie stash guys that hopefully with the, you know, per route target
101:33metrics that he'll just prove that he'll need more snaps, but he's not there yet.
101:37Like I need to see him play 55, 65% of snaps first.
101:41I'm just going to side with, with Drake London here.
101:43Yeah. I'm just going to start with Drake London.
101:46And if we're wrong, boy, uh, then we really just need to wait till Michael Penix comes back.
101:51But who knows if Penix is playing this? Okay.
101:54Here it is. If Penix plays this week, it's a hundred percent Drake London, right?
101:58If not, um, if not, then I understand the QJ stuff that how heavily favored they are by, by six and a
102:04half points, but I would still play Drake London over QJ.
102:07Yeah. Totally agree with you on that one. Like I would second guess it if it was not Michael Penix, I still
102:14kind of would be surprised with Michael Penix. Here's the thing, Josh, as a content creator or whatever we are, I can
102:20sit here and tell you like the merits of playing QJ over Drake London.
102:24I know that if it was me, I would never be able to, I would never be able to do it.
102:30I wouldn't. So I'm not going to sit here and tell you to do it.
102:34You can kind of do whatever you want. I would play Drake London over Quentin Johnson.
102:39Okay. We got a three pack here for our next one.
102:42Brian Hillman 22 says he has Caleb Douglas, Matthew golden or Casey Concepcion to replace Zay flowers.
102:47I think there's a pretty clear right answer in this trio.
102:50How about you? There is. And we might be talking about, you know, tables and players here.
102:55Matthew golden, I think is the right answer here.
102:57Um, Matthew golden was awesome when week one. So it was Christian Watson.
103:01Uh, Matthew golden is now fitting exactly what the Packers are doing offensively in terms of, Hey, we don't have a running game.
103:08We're going to play at a faster pace and we're going to just have a much higher neutral pass rate.
103:13And if that's the case, these are the two guys that are out there in two wide receiver sets.
103:19This was the theory of the pick all along.
103:21And, uh, Matthew golden is like a top 36 wide receiver out there.
103:25I think moving forward, if not even higher than that.
103:28Yeah, Josh, uh, I've said it behind your back, so I'll go ahead and say it to your face.
103:33I think I'm already ready to concede on the Jaden Reed is going to outscore Matthew golden.
103:38Uh, maybe we said it on the show. Maybe we said it privately.
103:42Um, but yeah, I knew Matthew golden was going to play more snaps in Jaden Reed.
103:46I was not a lot of snaps for Jaden Reed at week.
103:50Number one, um, that was, that was not a lot of snaps for Jane Reed in week one.
103:55Uh, I, I hope that changes, but yeah, that's tough obviously coming out of that.
103:59And I agree with you. I thought Matthew golden looked good.
104:02Um, and real big difference between his role in this game and week one, as opposed to what we saw in his
104:09rookie season, when he essentially kind of operated as like a movement player, he was playing in the slot.
104:14Like, uh, you know, he's in the backfield. It was like a motion option.
104:18It was essentially like Jane Reed's injury replacement. And there was just really nothing about Matthew golden as a prospect that would
104:24lead you to think he could, he could do that.
104:27So, um, like now that he's this X receiver outside, he's running these big breaking routes downfield.
104:32That's closer to what he did at Texas. So, um, I've said this all the time.
104:36I'm Matthew golden centrist. I'm, I'm leaning a little bit on the aisle here, uh, as a pro Matthew golden, what I
104:43saw in week one, that is for sure. Uh, Caleb Douglas though, I think is viable.
104:47Um, how viable do you think he is? Um, he might've been the player that I was most impressed by based on whatever expectations that I had.
104:55You know, I, I knew that the dolphins were going to play Caleb Douglas and Chris bell a lot, but Caleb Douglas
105:01played way more, which makes sense from the injury that Chris bell was coming back from.
105:06But even when like Malik Washington might be the one that loses some of the stuff and Chris bell gets more.
105:12Caleb Douglas is out there all the time. And he is a long strider that eats up a ton of ground.
105:18He had a cool route where it was almost pointed towards the sideline.
105:21Then he broke back inside to, you know, almost reverse the inside leverage that the cornerback had.
105:26Um, he might make a mistake here or there, whether it be a drop or not getting two feet in bounds, but guess what?
105:33They already said they're going to play them through it all.
105:36And he's going to learn on the job. Caleb Douglas was my most added player after week one.
105:41Yeah, he is raw to your point. Like knowing just being aware of where his feet are all sometimes he'll get himself locked up.
105:48He probably is not going to be the most explosive vertical player, but two routes that stood out for him from a
105:54reception perception standpoint as a prospect was like posts and slants.
105:58And I think you've seen that already, like these in breakers that he's pretty good on.
106:02He's didn't run a lot of those in the offense at Texas tech that he played at.
106:07Now I've seen some people on the internet make some irresponsible statements about what Caleb Douglas did in week one from a film perspective.
106:14Really nice debut. Let's see how it plays out.
106:16Uh, but definitely somebody that I think you can stick on the end of your bench and see what happens because the opportunity is going to be there.
106:24And obviously we both like Casey Concepcion. I would probably rank it though.
106:28Golden Douglas Casey. Uh, if you're simply replacing somebody for week two.
106:32Okay. Next one here comes in from J J K G.
106:35Okay. Uh, that's what we're going to go with battle of the Jalen slash Jalen genuine question, especially with waddle playing a
106:41good Jags defense this week in replacement of some of these injured guys.
106:45Do I start Jalen Coker or Jalen waddle? I mean, listen, it's all you want to start them both.
106:50Find a way to start them both. I don't know.
106:53Uh, can't, can you find a way to start them both?
106:56Who else do you have on your team? I mean, come on, you don't have anybody better.
107:01There's nobody better than Jalen Coker in the NFL.
107:03I mean, come on right now. I will. I have it ranked.
107:07I have Jalen waddle ranked as like my wide receiver 17 to 20.
107:11And I have Coker in my range of like 24 to 26.
107:14So, I mean, they're both starters. I do think Jalen waddle has a big bounce back in him, uh, in week two.
107:20What do you think, Josh? I mean, he freaking better.
107:23I mean, even having it like Matt, if we say we drafted him at wide receiver 17, which we did, and I was a huge proponent of that.
107:31And then he goes out there for one catch for two yards.
107:34And then we're like, Oh, actually we're still just going to rank him.
107:38Like you did exactly where we drafted him. And he has another stinker, uh, this time against the Jacksonville Jaguars secondary.
107:44It's going to be tough. Then Matt, we are, it's going to be relentless comments.
107:48Relentless. Oh yeah. Back to us. Yeah. I don't think it's going to happen though.
107:53I think that there was a lot of ways where I think I do just think that was like an outlier bad Denver offense.
108:00I mean, they were the worst offense in the NFL.
108:02You know, they were the worst offense in the NFL in week one.
108:06I think the past protection can get corrected. I thought a lot of, there were a lot of opportunities for Jalen waddle just left on the field.
108:14Yes, I do think so. I mean, cause I mean, you just got to get the rules figured out.
108:19You got to get the backs like in the right spot, the tight ends in the right spot.
108:24I think they can get that figured out. Like it's still a great offensive line.
108:29I mean, I've looked, I'm definitely worried about what I saw from the offense in week one.
108:33There's no question about that, but I liked what I saw from waddle on tape.
108:38I thought the role was exactly what we were imagining.
108:41And like, this is a team in Jacksonville that plays a bunch of zone coverage and they brought waddle in specifically to be the zone beater.
108:48So I think we'll see a pretty good role for him in week two.
108:52I would go. I mean, listen, I'm going back to Jalen waddle where I have him.
108:57So, you know, I'm going down the ship. If you are.
109:00No, I mean. I am too. I mean, it was concerning to me and I understand like, Hey, if every time we
109:06run a screen, if it goes to Jalen waddle, that's a pretty obvious tell, but I just, you know, would want him
109:12to get the manufactured touch instead of, you know, Pat Bryant, even though, you know, we both have love for Pat Bryant out there.
109:19Yeah. Um, look, this time last year, I told everyone to draft George Pickens.
109:23He had a horrific first game, which makes sense against Vic Fangio, uh, and outside wide receivers and all that stuff.
109:29Again, Quinnion Mitchell, so on and so forth. I just said, stay patient.
109:33All that. Um, I'm hoping that Jalen waddle has the same exact outcome here that week two and beyond it works out.
109:39And I believe it is. It's just so much more difficult to say after one game, uh, than it was prior to
109:45the season when, you know, us as analysts legit moved Jalen waddle's ADP all summer about around and a half.
109:51So stuff happens, Josh, bad week ones happen. Like the George Pickens example is a great one.
109:56You could perfectly explain that away. You can perfectly explain this one away.
110:00So I get it. People are furious. I'm furious.
110:02I have Jalen waddle and fantasy teams. I'm very upset about what I saw in week one.
110:07Uh, good. We got a chat here, uh, to, to address, uh, Armando Sanchez asked us in the chat.
110:12Should I trade AJ Brown for Jalen waddle? You guys should trade AJ Brown for basically like anybody that's going to score points for you.
110:19I don't know when AJ Brown is going to be back.
110:23It's a four to six week injury. And I mean, it's a high ankle sprain.
110:27It probably ruins his whole season. And he's a 29 year old receiver with a history of lower body injuries.
110:33I would just, yeah, I would definitely make this trade.
110:35I think you and I were more AJ Brown skeptical than almost anyone heading into the season.
110:40Like he closed draft season as the 13th overall player in consensus rankings that made zero sense.
110:45No sense. And half PPR 13 overall, you're going to take them over all those running backs.
110:50Um, so yes, this is the worst possible outcome that could have happened for, for those people that ranked him that highly.
110:56All right. Got a lineup dilemma trade debate or league controversy.
110:59The fantasy outline is open all season long. So send us your toughest questions and we might just feature them in an upcoming episode.
