Player insights

33

Blake Corum

NegativeRole37:07

Matt Harmon believes Blake Corum will eat into Kyron Williams' touches annually, but he rejects the narrative that Corum is a young player coming to usurp an older veteran, as they are the same age.

Insight page

Breece Hall

PositiveRole39:41

Breece Hall is a 'green light' target who is expected to return to a workhorse role. Despite the Jets' offensive struggles, he produced RB6 per-game results in 2023 and has top-10 upside if the team's quarterback play stabilizes.

Insight page

Brock Purdy

PositiveValue19:40

Matt Harmon highlights Brock Purdy as an example of a quarterback who can be drafted outside the top 120 picks, showcasing the depth of the position this year.

Insight page

Bucky Irving

PositiveValue33:29

Matt Harmon expresses interest in Bucky Irving as a late-round RB2 option, suggesting that he may have overthought the impact of Kenny Gainwell's signing.

Insight page
PositiveValue120:23

Harmon has changed his mind on Irving, moving him out of the 'coping corner' and into a targetable range in the fifth or sixth round. Irving is receiving positive reviews in Tampa Bay, and with a strong offensive line and ecosystem, Harmon believes he could outperform his rookie-year production, even if his ceiling is capped.

Insight page

Cam Akers

NegativeInjury22:56

Matt Harmon advises caution when evaluating Cam Akers' training camp workload, noting that his shared reps may be due to his recovery from a serious injury rather than a permanent committee role.

Insight page

Chase Brown

PositiveBreakout30:02

Matt Harmon calls Chase Brown the most underrated player in the first two rounds, noting his top-five production from week six on last season and his role as a focal point in the Bengals' offense.

Insight page

Chris Rodriguez

NegativeRole22:15

Matt Harmon believes Chris Rodriguez Jr. will have a role in the Commanders' backfield, though he cautions against overreacting to early training camp depth chart reports.

Insight page

Christian McCaffrey

NegativeBust25:03

Matt Harmon is lower on Christian McCaffrey than consensus due to his age (over 30), the massive 450-touch workload from last season, and the risk of injury, preferring Jonathan Taylor instead.

Insight page

Chuba Hubbard

NegativeDepth Chart113:25

Harmon and Boone view Hubbard as a 'red light' player, with Boone explicitly moving Jonathan Brooks ahead of him in his rankings. The consensus is that the Carolina coaching staff is prioritizing Brooks' development, making Hubbard a fading asset in the backfield hierarchy.

Insight page

D'Andre Swift

PositiveValue45:36

DeAndre Swift is considered 'ultra disrespected' at his current ADP. He was the RB14 in fantasy points per game last season and improved to RB10 after week six. Ben Johnson's praise for Swift suggests he remains a steady, high-value presence in the offense.

Insight page

Davante Adams

PositiveValue13:53

Matt Harmon has moved Davante Adams down five spots in his rankings over the past week. Harmon cites concerns about Adams' age and the 'fragile' nature of the Raiders' offense, noting that he is now breaking ties in favor of younger receivers like DJ Moore who may have higher target ceilings.

Insight page

David Montgomery

PositiveProjection48:10

David Montgomery is a solid RB2 target for the Texans, with potential to push for a top-15 or top-12 finish. The team's run-heavy game scripts and strong defense provide a favorable environment, and he is expected to lead the backfield over Woody Marks.

Insight page

De'Von Achane

PositiveProjection29:04

Matt Harmon defends Devon Achane against negative sentiment, arguing that his 18 points per game average last year makes him a strong value even if he experiences some regression.

Insight page

Derrick Henry

NegativeProjection98:32

Harmon ranks Henry as his RB8, acknowledging he is a 'one of one' talent who defies age curves, but expresses concern about his lack of receiving usage and potential for a decline in efficiency. While Henry remains a solid fantasy asset, Harmon views him as a high-end RB2 rather than a league-winning top-10 back, noting that unlike Christian McCaffrey, Henry lacks a passing-game floor to mitigate efficiency drops.

Insight page

Jadarian Price

PositiveBreakout55:58

Jadarian Price is a first-round talent in a good offense who is expected to emerge as the lead back. Despite preseason depth chart listings, he has received positive coaching feedback and is a strong investment as an RB2, especially with Zach Charbonnet returning from injury.

Insight page

Jeremiyah Love

PositiveBreakout22:51

Matt Harmon suggests that Jeremiah Love could emerge as the primary back in his respective backfield despite early training camp reports favoring other players.

Insight page

Jonathan Taylor

PositiveProjection25:03

Matt Harmon ranks Jonathan Taylor above Christian McCaffrey, citing his performance as the RB1 overall when Daniel Jones was healthy last season and his potential for high-volume scoring.

Insight page

Jonathon Brooks

PositiveBreakout113:28

Harmon and Boone are both high on Brooks, with Harmon ranking him 15.7 spots ahead of ADP. Despite coming off an injury, Brooks is receiving glowing reports from the Carolina coaching staff and is expected to eventually lead the backfield, potentially mirroring the emergence of Rico Dowdle last year.

Insight page

Josh Jacobs

NegativeValue103:46

Harmon views Jacobs as a 'red light' player due to potential suspension risk and declining efficiency metrics from last season, including a drop in explosive run rate (7.6% to 6%) and yards after contact (3.5 to 3.1). While his ADP is falling into the fourth round, making him a potential value, Harmon warns that he may be a 'falling knife' in a worse offensive environment in Green Bay.

Insight page

Justin Jefferson

NegativeProjection7:12

Justin Jefferson is the only player in the Vikings' offense that Matt Harmon is proactively targeting. While Harmon expressed some concern about the team's overall ceiling, he notes that Kyler Murray starting is good news for Jefferson's fantasy outlook, potentially returning him to WR1 status. Harmon has moved him into his second tier of receivers and ranks him around the end of the first round.

Insight page

Kenneth Walker III

NegativeProjection28:46

Matt Harmon notes he is lower on Kenneth Walker than consensus but clarifies that he still expects Walker to have a good season.

Insight page

Kyler Murray

PositiveProjection4:57

Kyler Murray has been named the Vikings' starting quarterback. Matt Harmon and Justin Boone agree that the offense should open up more under Murray compared to the previous plan, as he is willing to push the ball downfield and provides a more stable floor than the alternative. Boone views him as a viable late-round quarterback option in standard leagues and a low-end QB1/high-end QB2 in Superflex formats.

Insight page

Kyren Williams

PositiveValue36:47

Matt Harmon defends Kyron Williams as undervalued, dismissing concerns about Blake Corum usurping him and highlighting Williams' consistent top-10 fantasy production over the last three seasons.

Insight page
PositiveValue38:17

Despite concerns about the Rams' offensive ecosystem, Kyron Williams is a top-10 fantasy back on a per-game basis over the last three seasons. Matt Harmon and the source agree he is undervalued at his current ADP, with potential to finish as a top-12 or top-10 back again.

Insight page

MarShawn Lloyd

NegativeSleeper105:04

Boone highlights Lloyd as a sleeper who could have a huge season if he stays healthy, noting he is currently healthy and receiving positive camp reports regarding his explosiveness. While his injury history is a concern, his cheap ADP makes him a low-risk investment who could carve out a significant role in the Green Bay offense if Jacobs struggles or misses time.

Insight page

Puka Nacua

NegativeInjury11:58

Puka Nacua left a joint practice with an injury and faces potential league discipline for offseason actions. Despite these concerns, Justin Boone maintains Nacua as his WR5 overall, arguing that any potential suspension would likely be short and that the Rams' condensed offense provides massive ceiling potential. Both analysts warn that the Rams' ecosystem feels 'fragile' this year, but they remain hesitant to drop Nacua significantly in rankings.

Insight page

Rashid Shaheed

PositiveSleeper18:58

Matt Harmon notes that Rashid Shaheed is a late-round target in double-digit rounds who could realistically provide WR3 or flex value this season.

Insight page

Rhamondre Stevenson

PositiveDepth Chart109:05

Harmon has moved Stevenson ahead of TreVeyon Henderson in his rankings, citing reports that the Patriots' backfield remains Stevenson's and that Henderson is struggling with pass protection. Stevenson is viewed as the starter, with Harmon noting he is seven spots ahead of ADP on Stevenson while being behind on Henderson.

Insight page

Saquon Barkley

NegativeProjection28:46

Matt Harmon acknowledges he is slightly lower on Saquon Barkley than consensus but emphasizes that he still expects Barkley to have a good season and would rather move other players down than talk negatively about him.

Insight page

Travis Etienne

PositiveProjection117:28

Harmon identifies Etienne as a potential 'red light' player who could actually burn drafters by being much better than expected. Despite concerns about Alvin Kamara's presence, Harmon believes the Saints' fast-paced Kellen Moore offense and a solid offensive line create an environment where Etienne could thrive if he earns the lead role.

Insight page

TreVeyon Henderson

NegativeRole109:05

Harmon has downgraded Henderson to a 'yellow light' player, noting that he is not answering the coaching staff's call to improve in pass protection. While Henderson has shown big-play ability, Harmon believes he may now require an injury to Stevenson to become the primary back, leading to a shift in their relative rankings.

Insight page

Tyler Allgeier

NegativeRole22:43

Matt Harmon uses Tyler Allgeier as an example of why fantasy managers should not overreact to early training camp reports about rookies getting first-team reps, as roles often shift as camp progresses.

0:00Big show for you here today. It is the running back position preview.
0:04That's right. The position you cannot afford to get wrong in fantasy football.
0:07If you want to win a championship, it's the running backs.
0:11Can't fall behind. Gotta beware the cliff. All that we're talking about today with Justin Boone.
0:15He's got red light players for you. He's got green light players for you.
0:19The guys you want to target, the guys you want to avoid, all the things that you need to know about the
0:25running back position heading into your fantasy drafts this month.
0:28All that and more coming up on today's show.
0:31Let's get into it. What's going on, everyone? I'm Matt Harmon.
0:34Welcome to the Yahoo Fantasy Forecast and it is a hell of a day to talk ball because position preview week rolls
0:40on here and man, we got a big show ahead of you today because we've got our guy Justin Boone in the saddle with me.
0:47Boone, running back day. What's going on, man? It's a big one.
0:51Man, a lot going on. It's like a crazy flood of information and Harmon, I know a thing or two about floods,
0:57man, because I've had a couple of times I've had a couple of times I've had a lot of times I've had a lot of time.
1:04People in my basement with all this crazy rain lately and I've been dealing with that on top of trying to take
1:11in all this info that's coming out of training camps, keep the rankings updated, all that stuff.
1:15But that's why we love this time of year, right?
1:18Trying to adapt on the fly, trying to get everything ready.
1:21So when people are really drafting and it gets very, very busy in those last few weeks before the season, we have
1:28everything updated and everybody ready to go. Well, I hope your basement can stay flood free, man, because you're right.
1:33The information is flooding the timeline here quickly. Yeah.
1:36I mean, do I love this time of year?
1:38No, I'm ready to. It's super fun. It is.
1:41It is fun. It is fun. It's just stressful because I'm sure you feel the same way as me where I'm like,
1:47oh, my God, I know I'm missing something. I'm missing something, whether it's work or like a piece of information.
1:53I mean, you're missing things in your personal life for sure.
1:56Forget about that. That's not that's honestly not important at this at this point.
2:00That doesn't those that doesn't matter anymore. That see all in February.
2:03OK, but for now, what really matters is getting everyone's fantasy football teams right, as you mentioned.
2:08And that is what we are going to be doing here today with a running back position preview, because, man, we've this is a big one.
2:16All right. Everybody's got to get running backs right.
2:18As I've been saying on the show pretty much for the last week and a half since we went daily here, one
2:24of the do's and don'ts for Scott and I was we do not want you to fall behind at the running back position.
2:31Well, how are you going to do that is by listening to the preview position show today.
2:36We're going to look at the overall state of running backs positions strategies.
2:40We head into this year. We've got the top 12 consensus rankings and where do the cliffs at this position lie?
2:46We've got green light, red light, yellow light players.
2:48And of course, we will wrap it up with our sleepers.
2:51However, before we talk running backs, we do have a little bit of fantasy fallout because as Boone mentioned, news is coming
2:57in fast and furious from every angle. This first one comes in from Minnesota as Kyler Murray has officially been named the quarterback one of the Minnesota Vikings.
3:05Boone, we thought this would be the case. He would start week one for the Minnesota Vikings.
3:10I just thought that this announcement might come, you know, like 10 days ago, maybe even sooner than that.
3:16How are you feeling about Kyler Murray, QB one, Minnesota Vikings?
3:19And where are we going from here? Well, our long global nightmare, should we call it?
3:23Our long global nightmare of J.J. McCarthy is finally over.
3:26But this isn't anything surprising. We talked about this even before the Vikings.
3:30We brought in Kyler Murray. The idea that the way the team was talking, the way their star receiver, Justin Jefferson, by
3:36the end of last season was talking. They had to bring someone else and they had to get a veteran in there,
3:42somebody who could actually run the offense. And everything's coming out of camp right now.
3:47There's been ups and downs day to day. But overall, the talk is that the offense just opens up a little bit more with Kyler.
3:54He's willing to push the ball downfield a little bit more.
3:57We know what he can do with his legs, of course.
4:00And with McCarthy going back to last season, they were kind of trying to hide him in the offense and win in spite of him.
4:07Right. So this puts him back on the bench.
4:10Maybe he'll get a chance to become the next guy who is initially a bust in his career and then years later
4:16gets an opportunity to start somewhere and revitalizes his career that way.
4:19But for now, Kyler's out there. And the main thing you've talked about, how maybe the weapons in Minnesota aren't quite as good as everyone thinks.
4:27And you're probably right about that to some degree.
4:29But really, what we care about is Justin Jefferson.
4:32And this is going to be good news for Justin Jefferson.
4:35It at least puts him back in the conversation to be a guy who could be a wide receiver one in fantasy
4:41versus last year when he fell to like the wide receiver three ranks partway through the season because we just couldn't trust him.
4:48He had his best days when Carson Wentz was playing quarterback for the Vikings.
4:52So overall, this is good news for the offense.
4:54On top of the things we've talked about all offseason, the offensive line hopefully getting healthier and just overall seeing a little
5:01bit more from the Vikings offense like we saw in years past before last season.
5:05Yeah. I don't know if I'm just such a tepid.
5:08Yeah. Just not feeling it. I don't I don't know if it's just how long this took to kind of be announced,
5:14you know, or if it's even some of the reports from training camp that like McCarthy was actually making a pretty good
5:20push, you know, and it actually was having a pretty decent training camp.
5:24Maybe I'm totally wrong about this. And sometimes we do this where we talk about we talk about football for all year
5:30long and then we end up overthinking things. Sometimes I think we get into August.
5:34It's like, OK, I'm glad I changed my mind on this.
5:38This is one of those things where probably about two months ago, I was like, I think I said to Joel on
5:44the show, I'm going to be a Kyler Murray guy this year.
5:47And by the way, I still actually think Kyler Murray is a perfectly fine fantasy quarterback to draft.
5:52I haven't really moved him up or down my rankings really based on any of this.
5:57However, when it comes to Justin Jefferson, I do feel like differently about the whole situation probably than I did maybe, like
6:03I said, two months ago where now I'm starting to get the feeling.
6:07And again, I could be totally wrong that this is one of those situations where Kyler Murray starts 14 games.
6:13He plays himself out. He doesn't really fully push McCarthy aside.
6:16He plays just OK enough to like by the end of the season, they want to give McCarthy another look.
6:21And then McCarthy's playing in the fantasy football playoffs while Justin Jefferson is your wide receiver one.
6:26And I'm still ranking Justin Jefferson high, but I did bump him down to my second tier of receivers.
6:32And, you know, I'm kind of weighing him against some of those running backs that go on the turn.
6:37So I probably had him too aggressively ranked a couple of months ago.
6:41And now I think I'm maybe maybe over correcting or whatever.
6:44I just wish this had gone a little differently, Boone, where two days into training camp, they're like, yeah, Kyler Murray's our
6:50starter because he's just he's just that much better.
6:53Because I'm still kind of a Murray skeptic overall, I would say.
6:56And I think that's fair. He's he has his red flags.
6:59We talked about how he fizzled out in Arizona.
7:02He is not the perfect answer. He's not some guy that's going to come in and lift all boats, but they don't need that.
7:09Right. They just need someone to come in and give like average quarterback play and let everything else they have.
7:14They're going all the way to the other side of the ball on the defense.
7:19Let all of that do the work. Just don't let the quarterback position beat you.
7:23You don't have a situation where J.J. McCarthy's out there.
7:26And for three quarters, he's giving you nothing. Your offense can't score.
7:29And then you have to make some miraculous comeback in the fourth quarter.
7:33Right. Kyler out there, hopefully, is going to at least lift that a little bit.
7:37The coaching is still there. We probably give, you know, Kevin O'Connell too much credit.
7:41But I still think he's a good coach. And I still think the environment there is a positive one, even if there's not incredible talent other than Jefferson.
7:49It's a pretty good cast of skill position players there and guys who are going to get it done.
7:55So I'm looking at it now. I think we're probably in the same range.
7:59I always had Justin Jefferson more towards that one to turn right at the end of the first round.
8:04I've taken him a few times. You know, you don't feel great about it, but I don't really feel great about most
8:10guys that go at the end of the first round.
8:13For me, I would much rather pick early in the first or even in the middle of the first.
8:19I hate when I get a slot at the end.
8:21The good news is that when you come around the turn, I really like those players.
8:26But I'm not a huge fan of the guys that I have to take at the end of the first round unless somebody falls to you.
8:33So it is what it is in Minnesota, right?
8:36I think this offense is much better than what we saw last year.
8:40I think there's some real reasons why we can feel good about them.
8:43But overall, are we, you know, singing it from the rooftops and feeling great that Kyler Murray is going to come in
8:50and this is going to be one of the best offenses in the league?
8:53Probably not. Is it going to be better than what we saw last year?
8:57I definitely think so. I think I could probably get Jefferson as low as my 15th overall player, but that's about it.
9:04That's about that's about as low as I could go.
9:07So still to me, early second round, mid second round, just some of these running backs.
9:11And again, I think this is mostly structural when I'm doing my overall rankings is we'll kind of talk about throughout the show.
9:18But he really is the only one from this offense.
9:21Besides Murray as a low end QB one, high end QB two and super flex.
9:25Jefferson is the only one that I'm proactively targeting in this offense right now.
9:29I think everybody else. I'm just going to kind of let the board fall to me there.
9:34Does that does that make sense to you? Yeah, I agree.
9:37Murray is somebody that I'll take as a late round quarterback.
9:40If I really miss out on the guys that I like at every other value and then I have to pair two guys late.
9:47He's certainly somebody I'll look at in that case.
9:49Addison, you know, it's cliche to say, but he's kind of more of that like spike week best ball kind of guy like wide receiver for flex.
9:57But you really know when you can play him and you don't have to get into it.
10:02I know your thoughts on Addison. This is a running back show.
10:05We don't have to get the harm and take on him, but the backfield there could be value there.
10:11We're going to talk about it a little bit later.
10:13There's a couple of backs in this backfield that I could see actually make a difference this year in fantasy.
10:19So that's one spot where they've made a real commitment that they want to run the ball more.
10:24And I think we could see something exciting come out of this backfield in part where you get these guys, which is just very, very late in drafts.
10:32All right. So hopefully I'm overreacting to this, how long it took.
10:36And we just get a really good month of reports out of Minnesota and Kyler Murray.
10:40And by week one, I'm bumping Jefferson back up to that like first round range.
10:44I don't know. I just feel a little spooked about it today, but I reserve the right to change my mind because
10:51this is me changing my mind from how I felt about a month ago with this situation.
10:55One thing I'm also a little bit spooked by Boone and speaking of the top of the draft, let's talk about one
11:02of the best players in the sport and another running back that we are going to talk about later today.
11:07We got word from Adam Schefter today that Josh Jacobs and Puka Nakua could face discipline for some offseason actions.
11:13We're going to touch on Jacobs later in the show, but just really quickly on Puka Nakua.
11:18He did leave the Rams Cowboys joint practice today with an injury.
11:21I do just think I kind of continue to have this marinate in my head right now where I do think the
11:28Rams are a very hyper fragile situation. You know, we kind of Scott and I talked about this a lot and we
11:34all kind of talked about it a lot leading up to last season and then basically everything went right for them.
11:40So now no one talks about it. I'm not sure that's the best way to approach things, but just a reminder that
11:46I do think this Rams ecosystem as great as it is could be the number one offense in the NFL this year
11:52was the number one offense in the NFL. Last year is a little bit on a house of cards and Puka, you
11:59know Schefter was talking about he could be in danger of missing the first game of the season.
12:04Any issue here with you when you're ranking Nakua, who for me is still my fourth overall player.
12:09If he does miss week one, will you bump him down at all or how do you kind of feel about this situation?
12:15I have him as my fifth overall player. So just one spot behind you there.
12:20Yeah, it's it's concerning. We knew this was always a possibility when the stuff was popping up in the offseason, but I
12:26don't think I'm going to move him down that much because how long could the punishment possibly be?
12:31Like I don't think we're talking about anything really, really long.
12:34If it comes down, it'll probably come down early in the season and, you know, not to just dismiss it, but that
12:40time in the fantasy calendar doesn't quite matter as much as later in the year.
12:45Right. That was the reason why when Rasheed Rice had a suspension last year, we were still willing to draft him because we knew the upside.
12:52And obviously Puka has an even higher ceiling there.
12:55We don't know much about this injury, so we'll keep an eye on that and we'll see what updates come out there.
13:01But I agree with you that this Ram situation, because it's such a condensed offense, that if you start pulling just like
13:07one guy out of that mix, and I've been worried about Devontae Adams with his age and with the Rams kind of
13:13showing some interest in the offseason and some other receivers.
13:16I've been worried about him potentially maybe not giving them as much as they got from him last year.
13:22Puka, of course, we know Stafford and the injury situations with him and his age.
13:26So I'm totally on board with the idea that I could see this thing in L.A.
13:30fall apart quick, but we also know they're the kind of organization that would just use all their picks in order to
13:37restock the shelves if they had to in any way possible.
13:40So I think the offense will continue to be all right.
13:43I'm not bumping down Puka too much right now, but it's one we're going to have to monitor here.
13:48Yeah, Adams is a guy I bumped down five overall spots between last week and this week.
13:53I'm just kind of liking some of the younger players, guys that are maybe in spots where like DJ Moore, who could
13:59be the number one receiver in Buffalo as opposed to Adams is the number two in Los Angeles.
14:05I'm like kind of breaking ties in favor of some of those guys right now in his tier.
14:10And yeah, just it just all feels very fragile.
14:12And we know what it looks like when it goes well.
14:15We just got an example of that, but certainly something to monitor.
14:19No one likes the hey, I took my first round pick in fantasy football and then week one, especially season opener.
14:25And he's just not there. He's not playing. So I get if some people are just going to take one of the
14:31other great receivers or, you know, a Jonathan Taylor type.
14:34Is it Taylor? You're the guy you have ranked ahead of of Puka right now or I have JSN ahead of him.
14:40I was my third receiver there. And yeah, Taylor and CMC right behind those CMC has his own concerns, obviously, which we
14:46might get to in a little bit here. But yeah, I mean, it doesn't feel great.
14:51But then you do think back to last season when we had the Stafford uncertainty around his injury and we were bumping Puka down.
14:58We were bumping some of these Rams players down.
15:00And in the long run, that looked quite foolish.
15:03So just remember that it's obviously a different situation where he's going in drafts this year.
15:07You have to pay up a little bit more.
15:10And like you're saying, you don't want to take a guy in the first half of the first round.
15:15And now he's not available to you early in the season.
15:19But don't bump him down too much. That's at least how I'm approaching it.
15:23And perhaps I'm feeling that way because of what we did last year, pushing him into the second round and then seeing
15:29him just go out and have a monster fantasy season.
15:32But I want more information before I'm actually going to push him way down in the first round or even later.
15:38Yeah, I think that's right. I mean, he could walk into being the number one scoring player in fantasy.
15:43Certainly in his position this year, that is always possible for a player like this in this ecosystem.
15:48If everything remains right and tight there. All right, let's get into the running back preview.
15:53Overall state of the running back position, Boone. I think it's so fascinating this year.
15:57And for me, I've kind of got a clear vision here, but I'm curious for you.
16:01How are you attacking running back this year? Well, I'm going after it pretty early if I can.
16:07And sometimes that depends on where you're picking and the values that come to you.
16:11Because I often say that. And then, you know, you get on the clock and you look at who's available in the
16:17late second into the third and so on. And maybe you don't love the running back value there and you end up going in a different direction.
16:25But in general, I'm definitely trying to get two running backs in the first five rounds.
16:29I think after that, there is just a massive drop off in terms of the red flags that some of the guys have.
16:36I don't feel confident in really anyone from that sixth round on becoming like a quality RB2, starting that way, you know,
16:42in fantasy early in the season and giving you that value.
16:45There are some guys that could emerge and step up and become that kind of thing.
16:50But you just don't feel super confident that they're going to be that right away.
16:54So I think that's an important thing to take right away is if you want to go robust RB, you can.
17:00You know, if you want to take three running backs in the first four rounds, something like that.
17:05Totally viable strategy. You're putting your opponents on their heels.
17:08You're making them try to figure out other solutions at running back as you're taking three of those top guys.
17:14But at least having two in the first five rounds is just so important.
17:18And I love my builds much, much better when I do that.
17:21Man, I don't know. I might take it a little step farther and say I kind of want two in the first four rounds for me.
17:28And I mean, I still really like the wide receivers available, especially because I really like the wide receivers available in rounds four and five.
17:36So being able to just get one wide receiver in rounds one to four or shoot, you know, again, you get running
17:42back wide receiver running back wide receiver. I think is actually a really nice build this year because that fourth round is
17:48pretty well stocked with wide outs because there are decent picks in the fifth round that I do like this year.
17:54And we will talk about some of those guys.
17:57But for me, you get into that sixth round range.
17:59You know, you're starting to look at Travian Henderson.
18:02You're starting to look at Jadarian Price, Jalen Warren.
18:05It gets to Jalen Warren, Chuba Hubbard, Tony Pollard a clock pretty early in this in kind of the sixth round.
18:11And I have just built some, you know, robust wide receiver teams or hero RB teams where I've got one star running
18:17back and then kind of a stock receiver room.
18:19And maybe I took a vanity tight end at some point.
18:23I do not like those teams. They can work out.
18:25Of course, if I'm playing the waiver wire aggressively and all that, I'm I'm being, you know, kind of the hawk, the
18:32wolf on the waiver wire as opposed to the sheep.
18:34That's great. We know it can happen. But man, there's just it's tough.
18:38I don't like those teams very much. So when I'm looking at our consensus running back rankings here for this year on
18:44Yahoo, it's number one, Jameer Gibbs, number two, Bijan Robinson, three, Christian McCaffrey, four, Jonathan Taylor, James Cook, Saquon Barkley, Kenneth Walker,
18:51Ashton Gentey, Chase Brown, Amarion Hampton, Devon H and Derek Henry.
18:54Some really appealing names here for this one. So, yeah, I think, Boone, we are kind of on the same page here.
19:00We want you guys to double tap this position, if not the first five rounds, definitely the first four rounds.
19:06And part of the reason why Robust RV is so viable this year is just we love the depth everywhere else.
19:12And I'm sure you're going to talk about this on all the position preview episodes is, yeah, the receivers like you talked about.
19:18Great options. You can go even late where there's some guys that you can get Rashid Shaheed and players, you know, the
19:25double digit rounds that would not shock me if they gave you wide receiver three flex value this year.
19:30On top of the fact that you can get some really good tight ends in the mid to late rounds quarterback.
19:36We know you can wait until like the final round and get some good guys.
19:40We just did a mock draft recently and there were guys like Brock Purdy and others going, you know, outside of the top 120 picks.
19:47Now, when you have people who, you know, work for fantasy site, who are analysts in those drafts, you tend to see the quarterbacks last a little longer.
19:55But still, I've been in others where we see the quarterbacks last very long.
19:59And part of it is just the depth of the position this year.
20:03So I think that's important. I've also talked about this, the idea that you shouldn't be afraid to go after some of these ambiguous backfields out there.
20:11And I know we talk about that every year, trying to find value in those.
20:15But there's a few this year and, you know, I can spoil it and say that the Vikings who we just talked
20:21about are one where all the backs from the backfield are going outside of, you know, the top 90 or the top 100 picks.
20:28And I think you shouldn't be afraid to grab even a couple of those guys and just take two shots at a
20:34backfield that might have three guys who have a chance to emerge as the best fantasy option and give yourself the best
20:40chance to get the exact pick from that backfield who you can start each week.
20:45It doesn't always work out. But when you get to that range in drafts, there's no risk involved whatsoever.
20:50Right. And I'm still I will also add, you know, stocking up on those late round flyer running backs.
20:56I'm spending those late picks normally on running backs.
20:58And, you know, this year, like we said, even if you do go early, go early at running back, get your starters,
21:04maybe get your flex option, address the other positions in the middle rounds.
21:08And then when you get to the late rounds, you backfill and then you play the waiver wire aggressively and you try
21:14to get other running backs that way. But that to me this year has definitely been the best bill.
21:20Yeah, totally agree, especially about the ambiguous backfields. It's really where you want to be shopping when you get into these late rounds.
21:26So right now, too, I mean, August 11th, how much stock do you put into kind of the depth chart listings or
21:32some of the camp reports from some of these ambiguous backfields?
21:36Because there are some where, yeah, I mean, whatever, like take a commander's back because both these guys are going late.
21:42But we'll talk about backs like Jacksonville, where both guys are listed as co-starters or or things like that.
21:47Like, I think I know your answer, but just for the people watching and listening, what do you how do you kind
21:53of approach this time of year with that stuff?
21:56Zero stock, zero stock in it. It doesn't matter.
21:58Don't even look at it. Don't let it sway your opinion at all, because there's other factors.
22:03You have to think of it case by case, but you have to think of the other context, right?
22:09Right. Coaches are trying to keep all these players interested, involved, excited, trying hard.
22:13They don't want to just dismiss a guy right away.
22:15Hey, you know, Chris Rodriguez Jr. just came to our team.
22:19Great. Get in the backup jobs. You're going to be on the sidelines.
22:22You're not getting many touches this year. They're not going to do that.
22:26Now, I think he's going to have a role in that backfield.
22:29I just use him because he's top of mind and he just mentioned him there.
22:34But I think we have to give context to these things.
22:37Like if rookies, for example, you know, Tyler Algier is the getting the most first team reps in the Cardinals backfield.
22:43Well, yeah, some coaches want to make rookies earn it.
22:46And all of a sudden, as things move along a week or two, Jeremiah Love ends up being that guy.
22:51Like those things just happen. So don't be worried about that.
22:54Also, I look at a guy like Cam Scadaboo.
22:57We see him sharing quite a bit. Is he sharing more because that's how the backfield is going to look this year?
23:03Or is he sharing more because he's coming off a really serious injury and there's no reason to max him out in the beginning part of training camp?
23:11Let's lighten the load a little bit and ramp him up, make sure that he's ready for week one.
23:17So those things we don't know the answers to for sure.
23:20I have my feelings on each situation. We'll talk about some of them as we go.
23:24But that's the reason why I'm not putting much stock in these.
23:28I'm just trying to approach it individually and figure out what other context is involved that might be making them list guys
23:34in a certain order or co-starters or all that sort of stuff.
23:37People forget every year around this time what they're doing right now is a little thing called practice.
23:42And in practice, you try different things and you see what works.
23:46So it is still very early. We have an alarmingly long way to go until it's week one.
23:51And they've really figured out how these teams are going to approach things.
23:55We are going to, for now, take our first quick break.
23:58When we come back, we're going to talk through where the running back cliff begins this year.
24:03We'll get into that right after this. All right.
24:05We are back. Let's talk top 12 running backs and kind of compare your rankings, Boone, to the current consensus rankings on Yahoo.
24:12So again, your top 12 goes Jameer Gibbs, Bijon Robinson, Jonathan Taylor, Christian McCaffrey.
24:16You've got those flipped relative to consensus. James Cook, running back five.
24:19Ashton Gentty, Chase Brown, Amarian Hampton, Devon Achan, Saquon Barkley.
24:22Kenneth Walker, Jeremiah Love. So the three guys you're kind of lower on versus all the rest of us here at Yahoo
24:28is one Walker, Barkley and Christian McCaffrey. So I'm just going to throw all that at you.
24:33You take it where you want to go here with these top 12 backs.
24:37Give me someone to highlight here. Well, I've said this to you before.
24:41I don't normally waste too much time on the guys at the very top because you usually are getting a really good player regardless.
24:48So you can split hairs about which guy you want to take.
24:51But like Jameer Gibbs or Bijon Robinson, they're both awesome.
24:54If you want to rank them in a different order, all the power to you.
24:58Right. If you want to look at why I have Taylor had a CMC, it's the obvious stuff.
25:03Right. It's the age for CMC. It's the touches and the combination of those two things.
25:08Like we've seen guys in the past have these huge workloads and still have pretty good seasons.
25:13None of them have done it when they've been over 30.
25:16The guys who have done it and had pretty good years the next year have been like guys who are 25 and under.
25:22So McCaffrey is in uncharted territory here. We'll see if he can come through.
25:26But 450 touches when you count the playoffs last season, man, that is just so much.
25:31And then you go back to what this offense looked like for the Colts last year and how good Jonathan Taylor was.
25:37And when we had a healthy Daniel Jones out there, and I don't know if we'll have a completely back to form
25:43Daniel Jones versus what we saw early last season.
25:46There's also going to be some touchdown regression coming for JT for sure.
25:50But when we look at when Daniel Jones was out there last year, we had Jonathan Taylor as the RB1 overall averaging
25:5622.4 fantasy points per game in half PPR over the first 14 weeks of the season.
26:00So he was doing it. He was scoring touchdowns galore.
26:03He's having like those three touchdown weeks. It's great to have him on your fantasy team.
26:08Lots of things have, of course, changed with the Colts.
26:11There's injuries. There's receivers out the door. So we have to add that in there.
26:15But to me, I feel better investing in him than taking the chance that McCaffrey is going to beat all odds and
26:21come on this year and still have a really huge season.
26:24And after what we saw from him last year was like, I think a little bit of decline because he got through
26:31with the incredible volume that he was getting. But you don't look at that volume.
26:35If you start to question whether he's going to get the same volume, whether he's going to stay healthy, all those things.
26:41It just makes me scared to draft him in round one.
26:44So I normally shy away from him. And that's why JT has moved above him.
26:48I've still got Chris McCaffrey in the same tier as Gibbs and Bijon.
26:52I have him as my fifth overall player. And you got to acknowledge the risks.
26:56Like the risks is he loses you your fantasy season.
26:59Not really. You can still survive even if your first round pick gets hurt.
27:03But he puts a real damper on your fantasy season.
27:06How about that? The upside, though, still remains that he just is the best player in fantasy football.
27:11So I'm OK with that. That's kind of like a personal risk reward versus kind of just thing there.
27:17To me, there's not a big debate on that one.
27:19I really love JT. He's the top of tier two for me.
27:23I think one of the interesting ones, if we can pull up the overall kind of consensus board again from all of us here at Yahoo.
27:30I think one of the bigger disagreements just kind of in the group right now is Saquon Barkley versus like a guy like Ashton Gentty.
27:37Where JT is a little there's kind of actually folks who are lower on Gentty are higher on Barkley.
27:43If I'm just looking at it here, like I've got him six.
27:46Scott's got him six. Hayden has Saquon six. Josh has him fourth at the running back position.
27:51You and you and Joel Smith are 10. Whereas kind of the inverse there, you guys are maybe a little higher on Gentty.
27:58I have Gentty as my RB seven. So not any big problem there.
28:01But thought process, like what's the risk? Is this still just again, you're skewing into youth here at the running back position?
28:07This is one of those ones. I don't want to throw cold water on this.
28:12I'm sure we want to blow this up that, oh, my God, we all disagree.
28:16But this range of backs, I pretty much like all of these guys.
28:20The fact that I'm a little lower on Barkley and Walker, to be honest, I want to move them up to make
28:26sure that people who follow me are getting some shares of them.
28:29Because I also have found that in drafts, I'm not getting them as often because I always go with Chase Brown, who
28:36ends up being the guy available to me at the top of the second, sometimes falls to the middle of the second as well.
28:42If you want me to make the case, I could that, you know, Barkley, they're talking about Tank Bigsby getting involved.
28:48Don't make the case if you don't want to.
28:51I mean, shoot, if you don't believe it. I really don't.
28:54I think and this we could tie it into what we were saying about Justin Jefferson earlier.
28:59I would feel better moving Jefferson behind this whole pack than I would talking negatively about Barkley and Walker.
29:04Barkley Walker going to have good seasons. I think A-chan is being beat up on because the state of that Dolphins offense,
29:11which I don't know if it's going to be that bad, that it's going to just decimate any value that he could possibly have.
29:17I think he's going to get a ton of volume still.
29:21And I think people are probably underrating his ceiling.
29:23So I really like all these guys. Hampton, we've talked about on the show a million times.
29:28Just investing in that Chargers offense is very smart for fantasy this year.
29:32Yes, he could share a little bit with Keaton Mitchell.
29:35He could share a little bit with Kamani Vidal, but he is the first round pick.
29:39He is the star. And when you hear Mike McDaniel talk about this backfield, it's normally suggesting that Hampton is the guy
29:45that they feel really good about Hampton. And then he pumps up the other two.
29:50And then everyone aggregates those quotes about, oh, my God, it's going to be a three-way committee.
29:54Keaton Mitchell's never had a massive workload. He is that, like, sprinkle, that dynamic, explosive guy.
29:59He's not going to eat in significantly to Hampton.
30:02Chase Brown, I mean, he's the most underrated player in these first two rounds.
30:06Wouldn't shock me out of all if he ends up being the guy who's a top five, top three back.
30:11Because last season, that's what we saw from him once we got decent quarterback play in the Bengals offense.
30:17Right. In the early part of the year when Joe Burrow was hurt, when the schedule was tough, he struggled a little bit.
30:23Once Joe Flacco was out there, which isn't that high of a bar.
30:27And then especially once Burrow got back the rest of the season from week six on, we saw Chase Brown put up top five stats.
30:34He could certainly do that again. And all the talk right now coming out of Cincinnati is that he's one of the focal points of that offense.
30:42So he is going to get a ton of work.
30:44It all just boils down, Harmon, to me loving the running backs in that range.
30:49That early part of round two into the middle part of round two.
30:52I want to take all these guys. I'll take whoever falls to me.
30:56I'm really, really happy to have them on my roster.
30:59And that's why we're often starting either running back, running back or wide receiver, running back.
31:04Yeah, it is tough because there are some guys in that second round range at the wide receiver position that I also really like.
31:10And if you're trying to be disciplined about it, breaking ties in favor of I've started to move guys like Devon H
31:17and Chase Brown, just even ahead of the Drake Londons and the Nico Collins is like guys.
31:21I again, I do really like those players, but you know, you're just going to hate the running.
31:27You're going to still like the wide receiver that comes back around in the third or fourth round.
31:32I think quickly you're going to start to not like as much the running backs there.
31:36So I'm with you like this is just a really good range of players overall for me, you know, that I that
31:42I just kind of like a lot of these backs.
31:45There's no one here that is even even a Chan who a lot of the folks across the industry don't seem to like a Chan.
31:52Hayden is the highest one of us on a chance.
31:55He's got him as running back seven. And just the theory of the cases.
31:59He was like an 18 point per game player last year in half PPR.
32:03How much worse does he have to get to really be a bust even as a second round pick?
32:09I mean, we're already baking in some regression here.
32:11I think that's been priced in. So to me, there's no running back that is in inside of the consensus top 15.
32:17That's a glaring problem to me. Maybe we'll talk about one of the guys as a yellow light player for you later on.
32:24But let's get into kind of where you see the cliff at this position.
32:28Like truly again, we talked about some of the names early on here, but where do you feel like it really drops off at running back this year?
32:36Sure. It's kind of two major drop offs. One occurs like around the two, three turn.
32:40I still like taking Kyron Williams. I still like taking Jeremiah Love, but I know some people don't feel the same about those guys.
32:47There is certainly a drop off after those players in my mind.
32:51So that's one area. If you want to talk about like the absolute, like it gets to just a very scary scenario.
32:57If you're having to take these guys to be your RB2 in your lineup, that occurs like around the fifth to the sixth round.
33:04There's been times when guys will fall to the sixth.
33:07You can get them. We talked about it recently.
33:09I took Bucky Irving in a mock draft. He was a player I didn't really like, but he fell to me in
33:15the sixth to get him as my RB2 in the sixth.
33:19I was willing to do that. Sometimes you see that happen, but overall after the fifth round, you are lucky if you're
33:25getting a running back that you feel good about putting in your starting lineup this year.
33:29That is to me the like drop dead part of the draft where if you don't have two backs by that point, you are scrambling.
33:37You are playing catch up and your roster is not going to look as good because of it.
33:42Yeah. And I've found kind of similar when you get to that fifth round range and you're trying to take a, I
33:48don't want to have a quinch on Judkins, right?
33:50Is my running back too. I'm usually having to like go against my overall rankings, which, you know, it's fine.
33:56You don't have to stick to rankings all the time, but I'm going to go against those to kind of artificially prop up a running back.
34:04When there are so many players that other positions that I just like better than Quinchan Judkins at that standpoint, again, just
34:10to use one name, David Montgomery running back 22 in our consensus rankings is absolutely the same vibe.
34:15There's a few guys I have warmed up to.
34:17You know, you mentioned Bucky Irving. I kind of want to take Bucky out of the coping corner, dude.
34:23I think we might have over, you know, I think we might have overthought that one a little bit after the Kenny Gainwell signing.
34:30Um, I would, but we'll make, we'll talk, maybe we'll talk Bucky Irving a little bit later in the show.
34:35I don't think Boone is convinced on that one, but yeah, to me, Boone, it does feel like the, the fifth and
34:42sixth round range is where you really start to feel the cliff.
34:45And again, it just comes back to the, what we're saying over and over again, grab yourself a couple of these guys early.
34:52I agree with you though, getting receivers in that range of the draft where the Quinchan Judkins and David Montgomery's go, you
34:58do feel better about it when you have to take these guys to be part of your starting lineup.
35:03It's acceptable. It's not exciting. You don't feel like it's going to win you your league.
35:08You're just like, all right, I got a guy that I feel okay putting in my RB two spot, right?
35:13Versus some of the receivers in this range could potentially actually be these like league winning or weak winning types for you.
35:20So that is just a type of, you know, roster construction that you have to consider.
35:24Um, you can still win by going about it this way and getting these guys.
35:29And like I said, sometimes I put myself in a spot where I end up taking these guys when I never expected to.
35:35I've gone into drafts where I'm like, I'm definitely going running back early, but that's the problem.
35:40Sometimes with snake traps where you could be at the end of a round and all of the guys that you wanted there aren't available.
35:47And now you don't feel that good about who you have to take.
35:51And you're not going to continue just to go down the same plan and the same path that you had if you
35:57don't like the players and the value available in that area.
36:00So I recommend that people come away. I'm with you in the first couple rounds, you know, in the first three to
36:06four rounds, I really like having two running backs.
36:09I'm okay. Starting with two in the first two rounds, but I think after the fifth round, if you don't have that second running back, I'm worried.
36:17I'm worried about the roster. I don't feel good.
36:19And now you are absolutely chasing and you're going to end up taking guys ahead of ADP because you're so worried about it.
36:26And it's just going to hurt your team overall.
36:28It's going to hurt your chances of winning the title.
36:31So let's get into some of your green light players at ADP right now, because these are guys outside the top 12 that we've already talked about here.
36:39I want to hit on some of these players because I think they sort of start to represent to me when you're getting into the cliff zone.
36:47Your first two guys are Kyron Williams and Brees Hall.
36:50Kyron Williams is and there's a couple of running backs we'll talk about today where I didn't realize that I was lower than consensus on Kyron Williams.
36:57And yet I am kind of from an overall perspective, a little bit lower on him, which I think just starts.
37:03He represents where I think I'm starting to get more into the receivers and the running back.
37:08So while I recognize that there's just some fragility with the ecosystem overall, as we talked about, I do think Blake Corum
37:14is probably going to eat into his touches a little bit more on an annual basis.
37:19Like every single year, I think he'll get more involved, not like totally fading him, but Brees Hall.
37:24Make the case for Brees Hall, who is a guy for me, is my 14th running back on the board.
37:30We could talk about Brees, but I have to address the Kyron thing first.
37:34I think Kyron is the guy who gets undervalued all the time.
37:37I don't understand it. I think what it is, Harmon, is everyone wants to get like the new, exciting young player.
37:43And they view this backfield as Kyron being the older guy and Corum being like the young, exciting guy who's going to usurp him.
37:50Yeah. And that's not the case at all. They're the exact same age.
37:54The difference is just a couple of months. They're both 26.
37:57I think one guy's birthday is in August and one guy's birthday is in November.
38:01So this is not a scenario where it's like a new, young, exciting back coming for the starting role.
38:06And how many years in a row are we going to do this?
38:10It feels like it's been the last couple of seasons where everyone's just checking their watch, waiting for Kyron Williams to give up this job.
38:17But what's happened the last three seasons? He's been a top 10 fantasy back on a per game basis.
38:23Like this dude is legit. He's very good. All the caveats that we said earlier about the Rams offense being a house of cards.
38:29And if you pull Stafford or Puka or one of these guys out, they are not going to have the same scoring power.
38:36They are not going to be as valuable in terms of what the running back's giving them.
38:41But this scheme produces very strong fantasy value. And Kyron Williams is the guy that they trust.
38:46So anytime you see Kyron Williams catching punts or, you know, Blake Horms coming for the job by the dip every single time.
38:52I think Kyron is totally undervalued. I agree with you that the receivers in that range at the early third round into the mid third round.
39:00Great wide outs. I love grabbing those guys, too.
39:02But Kyron Williams is somebody that people should feel much better about.
39:06I think he's going to have another good season.
39:08And it wouldn't shock me at all if he's a top 12 back again, maybe even top 10.
39:13So I had to say that I had to throw that out there.
39:17I'm not throwing cold water on Kyron. He's a really good fantasy asset.
39:21Yeah, I miss running back 16. So I'm just a couple of spots behind positional ADP, but I'm not.
39:26I'm just like from an overall ADP perspective, I'm a little bit lower on him.
39:30But that just mostly has to do with the overall players at other positions.
39:34So I'm not like totally out on Williams, but just breaking ties in favor there with some of the fragility of the ecosystem.
39:41But yeah, Brethal is a guy I think makes a lot of sense in sort of a similar way where I think
39:47this is one where I'm buying the opposite of what they were selling last year.
39:51Where, oh yeah, we're going to try to get Braylon Allen involved.
39:55We're going to try to get Isaiah. Now, I think this year it's pretty much just mostly going to be the Brees Hall show.
40:02They paid him. He had a pretty solid season last year.
40:05Obviously, you can't talk about the Jets without the Frank Reich specter being a big thing.
40:09But yeah, he is one that I'm definitely green light on at ADP as well.
40:13Him and one of the other backs we're going to talk about here before the break are the two guys in these
40:2030s and 40s that I actually really, really like Brees Hall being one of them.
40:24Yeah, I'm excited about what we're hearing out of New York for him and the fact that he could get back to being more of a workhorse.
40:32The thing with Brees too is that we've seen it before.
40:35We've seen that top 10 upside. I think we're pretty confident that the talent is there.
40:39It's sort of like Garrett Wilson where he's a player that could certainly be a top 12 fantasy running back.
40:45Garrett Wilson could be a top 12 fantasy receiver.
40:48And yet this Jets offense is the thing that's held them back and made them more of these RB2 wide receiver two types for fantasy.
40:55But we saw like very, very high end production from him over stretches in the past.
40:59Right. He overcame the knee injury, overcame subpar quarterback play, produced RB6 fantasy results on a per game basis in 2023.
41:05Like he could be that guy again. It is not impossible.
41:08If the Jets can take a step, if they get stable quarterback play from Geno, there's a lot of caveats on this one too, Harmon.
41:15Like it is not. That's what I'm saying. This is where we start to kind of have another cliff because I feel
41:22a lot better about those guys in the second round versus taking Brees Hall.
41:26But there is a path for him to produce a wildly outproduce this spot.
41:30And I have found myself taking him in the third round this year.
41:33Again, trying to make sure that I get that strong second running back because I feel good about what I can still
41:40do at receiver in the fourth round and beyond.
41:42Yeah. Sell me on Cam Scadaboo at 41st overall.
41:45And I know he was good in fantasy last year and maybe that's just what you're going to tell me.
41:50But here are the things I'm concerned about. One, the injuries.
41:54Yeah, sure. Fine. One, I'm not sure the Giants are that good.
41:57And two, I'm not sure he's that good. That makes me really nervous when I've got both of those factors involved and we're taking him 41st overall.
42:05I have him. And again, some of this is structural stuff just because I like the receivers, whatever.
42:10Again, he's the 41st overall pick. I have him as like my 57th overall player.
42:14So to me, I think, I don't know. Don't nobody clip this.
42:17If this gets clipped, I'm going to be mad.
42:20Nobody clipped this. But I kind of just think he's a meme player, honestly.
42:24To me, I think if he wasn't such an interesting character, I think he goes like 50th overall, not 41st overall.
42:30And maybe I'm stupid for that. But sell me on Camp Scadaboo.
42:33I mean, yeah, he's one of those guys. Cool name.
42:36Fun personality. It's just infectious watching him out there.
42:39But the team also loves him. Harmon Jackson Dart loves him.
42:42And I think this coaching staff wants to run the ball.
42:45They want a back that's going to be able to pound it.
42:48If we look at what happened last year and we can write it off as it was a small sample.
42:54He was only eight games before he got hurt.
42:57He was really good in fantasy. But I think it's also worth noting that when he was out there with Tyron Tracy
43:03Jr., he was getting like three quarters of the work versus Tyron Tracy Jr.
43:07This was not a scenario where Tyron Tracy Jr.
43:10had turned this into an even split or anything even close.
43:13That's why I'm kind of just not agreeing with some of the reports that are coming out right now that are saying,
43:19oh, these guys are splitting and this is how it's going to be.
43:23I want to see where we are a month from now when the season comes around and Scatter was even healthier and things actually matter.
43:30Are you going to have this be a committee backfield or are you going to have the guy out there who was
43:36producing at a very high clip last season? If we look at just the final six healthy appearances, you have the seventh
43:42most fantasy points among running backs was averaging 17.4 fantasy points per game in half PPR.
43:47And over the final four starts and again, we're getting even smaller sample size here.
43:51That's fine. 22 touches per game. So different coaching staff for sure.
43:54I mean, Harbaugh is an old school guy. I would think like I think they're going to still run the ball here.
44:01I think they really like Scatterboo. The team likes Scatterboo.
44:04They feed off that energy. And I believe this offense needs him.
44:07I don't think Tyron Tracy Jr. is the answer there.
44:10I certainly don't think Devin Singletary is going to be the guy might get a couple of touches a game, but that's about it.
44:17So of this next phase of backs after, you know, the top 14, 15 guys, Scatter was someone that I can at least see the ceiling for.
44:24And I feel the same way about Quinjohn Judkins, where both these guys are coming off injuries.
44:29Both these guys really showed it over short stretches last season that they had this massive upside.
44:34I'm willing to invest because both of them seem extremely healthy right now.
44:38Like they're going to be okay this year. So I'm taking the injury discount.
44:42Yeah, I have Scatterboo running back 22 and Quinjohn Judkins running back 23.
44:45Again, this is just a case where the market like our ADP is higher on Scatterboo than I am.
44:51Because I agree that there's actually a pretty similar case between these two guys.
44:55The only kind of like the variable going in Judkins' favor is that I'm very confident like he is a good, good starting back.
45:02But the other thing that goes against Judkins is that I think Dylan Sampson might play a role as a pass catcher
45:08where I'm not 100% sure if Quinjohn Judkins does.
45:10Whereas in the inverse, if Tyron Tracy Jr. was a better running back, I would think that maybe Cam Scatterboo would get pushed for the starting job.
45:18As it stands, Tyron Tracy is just Tyron Tracy.
45:21So I do think Scatterboo is the clear starter on a run-heavy offense, which is why ultimately I've broken ties in favor of Scatterboo over Judkins.
45:28But because of ADP, like I end up with Judkins a lot more than I do necessarily with Cam Scatterboo.
45:34But so he's a green light player for me.
45:36Last one green light guy that we do agree on before we go to break here is DeAndre Swift.
45:42Swift is the 48th overall player. I'm a few spots higher than that.
45:45I am as my running back 17. He's the running back 20 off the board.
45:50He's the guy, Boone, that is just like ultra disrespected.
45:52Nobody likes DeAndre Swift. Everybody wants him to go away.
45:55And yet Ben Johnson, who remember the narrative last year was, oh, he moved away from Swift before.
46:00All he does is talk about how great DeAndre Swift is.
46:04By the way, this is a little side note.
46:06This is kind of a thing I see on Twitter.
46:09It's like Ben Johnson never praises his players. I'm like, I can find clips of him praising all of his players.
46:15Give me a break. But yeah, anyways, he's talked about how good DeAndre Swift is and how steady of a presence he is.
46:21I think Swift is a very overthought player in fantasy right now.
46:25The RB 14 in fantasy points per game last season.
46:28Over 1300 scrimmage yards. 10 touchdowns. And if people are worried about Kyle Mononga being there, his numbers actually got better after
46:34Mononga became a bigger part of the offense from week six on.
46:37Swift was the RB 10 in fantasy points per game.
46:40So there's going to be a lot to go around in this offense.
46:44And yeah, I don't really understand why people are down on Swift.
46:47They just think he's going to move along. It's kind of the Kyron Williams thing, right?
46:52People don't really like him. They think he's going to get overtaken by a younger back.
46:56And I don't think it's going to happen this year.
46:59At some point, maybe they'll draft somebody or sign somebody.
47:02But this season, I was surprised that they came back with this duo.
47:06But because they did, you're going to want to invest in this backfield.
47:10You're going to want to do it with DeAndre Swift.
47:12Yeah, Swift at running back 17. For me, that's the answer where that's the last click that I feel.
47:18All right. I like it. That's that's the last click that I can feel pretty confident about.
47:23There's still some backs I like later, but it just gets a little bit dicier.
47:27However, we are going to take another quick break.
47:29When we come back, we're going to talk about some of those backs that are a little dicier, but we still like.
47:36We'll get into that right after this. All right.
47:38We're back. Let's talk through some more green light players.
47:41We've got four more here from you, Boone, to hit on.
47:44You've got Dave Montgomery, Basial Tootin, Jadarian Price, and Ramondre Stevenson.
47:47It's good to see that you're finally on the right side of history with the Patriots backfield.
47:52Took a while. It took a while. I'm going to throw those dragon names for as long as I can.
47:58Yeah, I get it. I get it. Hanging on.
48:00The young player. Honestly, Trayvon Henderson's fine. He's whatever pick.
48:03It's fine. But those four guys, just give me one of them that you really want to stand up here and make the case for.
48:10I mean, right now, David Montgomery seems like a very solid pick to me.
48:14And we could lump him into this group of older backs that people just don't see as these sexy fantasy options.
48:20But he goes to the Texans who absolutely needed someone.
48:23They saw Woody Marks in that lead back role last year.
48:26They didn't like what they saw because they decided to go out and get a veteran who could come in and be the dude.
48:33And we saw this happen a couple of years ago for them when they went out and got Joe Mixon.
48:39And he was a little bit older and people weren't as excited about him.
48:43And what happened? He ended up being a very solid RB1 that year, had a huge season for them.
48:48I think there's a good shot that we might not see that.
48:52I think Mixon was like RB5 in fantasy points per game that year.
48:55I don't think we're going to see that. But I think we're going to see something where David Montgomery is a very
49:02solid RB2 and wouldn't shock me at all if he's pushing for a spot in the top 15 or even the top 12 Harmon.
49:08Because this Texans team is very solid. They've made improvements this year.
49:12They have good weapons in the passing game. Strong chance that we're going to see better things from CJ Stroud this year.
49:18So, man, just putting that veteran back out there with Woody Marks as the complimentary piece, as a pass catching option.
49:24I don't buy the Woody Marks is going to take over half this backfield unless we've seen massive changes from the Woody Marks that we saw last season.
49:32He did not look like somebody that was a threat to be the real lead back on a quality team, which I think this is.
49:39And Montgomery, someone who's done it before, who still has something left in the tank.
49:43A guy that I don't think people should overlook for fantasy.
49:47Yeah, he's one. I'm glad you brought him up because it feels like there's really strong opinions on David Montgomery.
49:52Like there are some people that really like him and think he's a big time value.
49:57And there are some people I talk to that just they're totally out on Montgomery with the Houston Texans.
50:02And I'm kind of a Montgomery centrist. Honestly, I don't really have a strong take one way or another.
50:08I find it odd that he's become this kind of lightning rod fantasy football player because the barrier if I was to
50:14make the positive case, the barrier for entry for being a good Texans back is so, so low.
50:19This is this team ranks 31st in rushing rushing success rate since CJ Stroud entered the league in 2023 31st.
50:25And that was even with those Joe Mixon years.
50:27You know, they've never been a good consistent rushing attack.
50:30And Montgomery, you know, I don't think is totally cooked.
50:33It bothers me a little bit that the Lions basically just completely shelved him and were totally willing to let him go.
50:39It bothers me a little bit, but not enough to really get too, too concerned.
50:43And the other thing I think people are really just overstating how bad this offensive environment is, Boone.
50:49I mean, CJ Stroud is the top 10 quarterback by EPA per play last year.
50:53This was the 17th best passing game in drop back success rate and EPA last year.
50:57This is not some disgusting, hideous environment. And I think there's a lot of ways that it can be even better this
51:04year as you outlined, like the offensive line. I think, dude, if this is the 24th best offensive line in the NFL, that's an improvement.
51:11Jaden Higgins in year two tank doll, maybe coming back healthy.
51:14Jalen Knoll in his second season. I think there's if I'm just drafting off of environment, I think this is an underrated environment.
51:20Yeah. And the defense is going to be a huge impact on all of this.
51:25I think they want to win games by running the ball and playing strong defense.
51:29And I think they're going to be able to this year.
51:32Why not? Like, yeah, that part of it, I don't understand.
51:35And Texans, maybe they're just not a sexy team.
51:38Like, I know that's a funny word to use when we're talking about fantasy, but it really seems that way.
51:43They're not getting hyped up. And yet they have all of these players, all this talent collected.
51:48If the Texans went to the Super Bowl this year, would it shock you, Harmon?
51:52No, not at all. I think they're going to, I think they should be one of the favorites.
51:58Yeah. Like last year, that defense was, I'm worried as a Bills fan, they have to play them in week one.
52:04I can't wait to see where I end up ranking Josh Allen in week one, right?
52:08He's not going to have a strong game against that Texans defense.
52:12And that's where it starts. So I think there's going to be a lot of positive game scripts.
52:17And Dave Montgomery is going to be the guy that they want out there.
52:21Not the pass catching option in Woody Marks. Yeah.
52:23Could you see him just falling backwards into 10 touchdowns?
52:26I could totally see that for a run-heavy game script with a really quality defense on the other side.
52:31Another player who's kind of a lightning rod in the Twitter streets that I am definitely in on with you this year is Basial Tootin.
52:39Because to me, he just, when we're talking about these guys, Boone, that are the second year running backs, the Quinn John Judkins and the Camp Scatterboos.
52:46And we'll see what this, the Jags, they're going to be good.
52:50Their offense is going to be good. So I kind of like getting the running back attached to it, but make the
52:56case here for Basial Tootin with Chris Rodriguez and him being listed as co-starters on the coveted preseason depth chart.
53:02Chris Rodriguez is not a lead back in the NFL.
53:04Like he's just not, he gives you very little in the passing game.
53:08But did you know that Liam Cohen was his college coach?
53:11Did you know that? And did you know, Harmon, that he's back at practice and they're splitting reps?
53:16Well, again, it's very early in training camp and teams are going to split a bunch of reps.
53:21But who profiles is the guy that can be that explosive option, can be the lead back, can do a little bit of everything.
53:28It's Basial Tootin. And there are plenty of Liam Cohen quotes going back to OTAs where he's talking up his improvement year
53:35over year and how excited they are for him this season.
53:38And Rodriguez is a back that you bring in to take some of the load off of him as that bigger bodied option.
53:44Yes. Could he factor in at the goal line?
53:47For sure. But who else factored in at the goal line?
53:50Basial Tootin when he scored seven touchdowns as a rookie as the number two back in this offense last year.
53:56And we could see Rodriguez have a role like Tootin had last season where he gets something around, you know, a hundred touches, something like that.
54:03Still has an OK role, not one that's overly exciting for fantasy.
54:06Maybe a TD or bust kind of flex option for you, not somebody that I'm going to want to draft or start.
54:13Tootin's a guy that they want out there that can make a difference, that can break these big plays.
54:18And then LaQuint Allen Jr. I feel bad for because he's like the forgotten man in all of this.
54:23And in part, it's because he doesn't have much of a fantasy ceiling.
54:27He will get some receiving work out there. He'll also factor in.
54:31But it's not going to be enough that we need to worry about him for fantasy.
54:35And it's not going to be enough that it's going to take away from Tootin's upside.
54:40So will this be some sort of committee? Yes.
54:42Is Tootin going to have 50% plus of the snaps?
54:45Yes. And if he does that, he is going to be just fine and he is going to be a solid fantasy asset for you.
54:52Yeah, that's why he's a fifth round pick. If he was going to own the goal line role and the LaQuint Allen
54:58obviously is going to have his third down role, everything like that.
55:02That doesn't mean that Basial Tootin is never going to score a touchdown and never going to catch a pass just because
55:08of those two guys in those roles. He just might be kind of a frustrating running back to flex where it's a
55:14little bit like you need him to hit big plays.
55:17Luckily, this is a guy that can hit big plays and is in a good offensive environment.
55:22So, yeah, when I get into that spot that I don't want to be in, right, that I don't want to be
55:28in where I need a running back to when I get to the fifth round, I prefer to have that spot locked up.
55:35Tootin's one of the guys that I really want to look at there because I just, again, I'm breaking ties in favor
55:41of like the Browns aren't going to be good.
55:44The Giants, I don't think, are going to be very good.
55:47I do think the Jags are going to be good.
55:50So give me the running back who's going to be attached to that situation.
55:54Before we move on here, another guy that you have as a Greenland player is Jadarian Price.
55:58Another player, Boone, I don't have a strong take on one way or another.
56:02So I think the case for Jadarian Price is pretty obvious, but make it anyways.
56:07First round back in a good offense and the fact that we are inflating George Helani and Emmanuel Wilson as guys that
56:13are going to impede a first round back. And somebody who's gotten a ton of positive comments from the coaching staff that
56:19the beat writers have remarked that he's looked really good out there.
56:23This is a player that's the fact that he's this far down is shocking to me.
56:27So, yes, I'm absolutely willing to take him as my RB2.
56:30Now, when Zach Charbonnet comes back later in the season off of a serious injury that occurred this year, maybe that will change things a little bit.
56:38But they drafted Price to be the guy, and I think he is going to emerge as the guy, especially this season.
56:44Next year, we'll reevaluate. Zach Charbonnet might not be there anymore.
56:47That's a whole different story. But later this season, when Charbonnet comes back, he's not going to be the same player that he was before.
56:54So Price is the guy to invest in in this backfield.
56:58Well, I'll always have August 11th, 5 p.m. Eastern, where my dynasty teams can remember that George Helani was listed as the
57:04running back one of the preseason depth charts. So how dare you disparage the great George?
57:08But no. Yeah, I'm with you. The Jadarian Price is fine.
57:12Again, I kind of have him. He's running back 26 in ADP.
57:15I have him as my running back 26. So I'm in line with where he goes there as well.
57:20We are going to take another quick break. We come back.
57:24We talk through the red light and yellow light players.
57:26We will get into that right after this. All right, we're back.
57:30We're talking through the red and yellow light players at the running back position.
57:34Before we do, I just wanted to clarify what a yellow light means because I got a couple of responses from listeners
57:40that were confused about how I was discussing what a yellow light player was.
57:44By the way, I'm totally ripping off like a Scott Pianowski-ism here.
57:47So maybe I'm speaking out of turn. But I think the reason the confusion is, this is my theory, Bill, is that
57:54because we as human beings, I won't speak for Canadians.
57:56You guys are nicer than us here in the United States.
58:00Here in the United States, when we see a yellow light, that means get through that thing before it turns red.
58:06What the yellow light is actually supposed to mean is approach with caution, slow down because this thing's about to turn red.
58:12And when I see we're talking about these yellow light players, that means we're not out.
58:16We're just kind of approaching with some caution here.
58:19But the red light, that's stop. Okay? Don't draft.
58:22Stop. Don't be drafting these guys. So does that make sense with how you categorize the red and yellow light?
58:27And hopefully for the listeners out there, that makes a little bit more sense, too.
58:31I feel like every time we talk about our Canadian-American differences, I always point out that I think the two countries and
58:38the people in them are a lot more similar than they are different.
58:41So I agree. We're the exact same when it comes to a yellow light.
58:45We are the exact same when it comes to a yellow light, Harmon.
58:49But, yeah, I think the whole idea of this is just proceed, but proceed with caution.
58:54Still drafting them, but don't feel as good as maybe I should feel about drafting them.
58:58I'm a little bit worried when I click their name.
59:01All right. So with that, and by the way, yes, we're always much more alike than we are apart.
59:06Different. You know? Okay? So Boone and I are in unity here.
59:10You know? Okay? There's that. All right. Derek Henry.
59:12Why do you? Why? Why? We got the yellow light up for Derek Henry.
59:16Do you feel good about picking him? Because at some point, I feel great, bro.
59:21I feel so stupid. It sounds so stupid because I have said this, I think, for multiple seasons that we have to be worried.
59:27Like since he turned 30, it was like he's a bigger back.
59:31At some point, you know, father time is undefeated.
59:33It's coming. What year is it going to happen?
59:36It hasn't happened yet. Continues to defy that age curve that's out there.
59:40He's an absolute freak. He is one of one, and maybe he can do it again.
59:44But I feel like there's a chance that one of these years, Harmon, the wheels are going to fall off.
59:50He's also a back that doesn't get involved that much in the receiving game.
59:54So we can't really hope that he's going to come through that way.
59:58Can he fall into the end zone 10, 12 times?
60:00It's Derek Henry. Absolutely. He's still going to be good for fantasy.
60:04Is he going to be RB1 top 10 good?
60:06That's the part that I'm a little worried about.
60:09I think we're going to see him maybe take a step back at some point and become more of that high end
60:15RB2, which is how I have him ranked. A guy that's a good player to have in your lineup, but isn't necessarily going to win you your league.
60:23And I can't wait till we get to December and I'm being proven wrong once again.
60:28And the guy has 15 to 20 touchdowns and is just leading everybody to a fantasy title.
60:33And listen, I traded for him in one of my main leagues last year.
60:37I was trying to beat my buddies from high school.
60:39So I bought in. I at some point was like the guy still has it.
60:44But I've just always worried when I'm ranking and there's younger backs and there's other backs that I feel have that higher ceiling.
60:50I tend to want to push them above him.
60:53And maybe if there was any signs last year that it was slowing down, I would be nervous about it.
60:58But there really wasn't. I mean, his yards after contact per rush attempt were actually higher slightly last year than the year before.
61:05The blocking was worse in Baltimore last year. I think that was a problem.
61:09I think maybe some of the scheme, it just wasn't totally working out there.
61:13But I love the way Henry fits in this offense.
61:16I have as my eighth ranked running back right now.
61:19I just don't see a reason. I don't see a reason why the why the train is slowing down here, man.
61:25Like, I think he's got 10 touchdowns in his back pocket entering the season.
61:29Like, that's 10 more seasons in him. I think he's got 10 more seasons in him.
61:33He's just going to keep going. Maybe, dude. I don't know.
61:36I will say, though, this isn't a CMC like situation, right?
61:39Where if McCaffrey's efficiency declines, he can make up for it with the volume and the passing game.
61:45Henry doesn't have that. So if we do at some point see the efficiency start to decline, he doesn't have the receiving
61:51role that can kind of counter some of that.
61:53But I agree with you. I mean, I laid it out.
61:57I am still drafting. I'm willing to take him.
61:59I just never feel good about it. But when December comes along, I'm sure we'll all be happy when we have him on our teams.
62:06Yeah. Yeah. DeHember is going to be happening on my team.
62:09Basically, to go back to the red light, yellow light, green light analogy here.
62:13Boone is actually approaching the light with some caution.
62:16He's slowing down. He's not totally stopping. And I'm just running through that thing.
62:20Which, by the way, not a good idea. Okay.
62:22So maybe I'm the one who's going to end up getting banged here.
62:26The player that is, to me, the start of the running back cliff is the next guy we're talking about in yellow light here, which is Josh Jacobs.
62:3433rd overall ADP. Honestly, Boone, I think there's a stronger case that he's a red light player.
62:39And that's even, I think with the possibility of a suspension, he's a red light player to me.
62:44But I think there's a lot of reasons to be kind of worried about Josh Jacobs, even without the suspension risk.
62:50Where are you at with the Green Bay running back?
62:53Yeah, there's an injury situation with him as well that we're monitoring.
62:56So there's a few things. He is getting up there in terms of age.
63:00But when he's been on the field recently, he has been good.
63:04Now, the one complicating factor that we have to add in this year is Marshawn Lloyd.
63:08Can Marshawn Lloyd actually stay healthy? Because at the moment, he's healthy.
63:12And we are getting a lot of steam about him coming out of camp that he looks great, that he's explosive, that
63:18he's going to have a role in this backfield this year.
63:21Now, putting your chips on Marshawn Lloyd, who's like going down the J.K.
63:25Dobbins path for like getting hurt every single year and not being able to finish the season.
63:29I don't know if that's where I want to invest.
63:32He wishes he was J.K. Dobbins. He can't even finish the training camp.
63:36I mean, come on. Yeah, he's got a long way to go, but he also comes at a much cheaper ADP.
63:42So you could take Lloyd without any sort of risk.
63:45And I think people should to spoil one of the guys that we have in the sleeper section.
63:50Lloyd is one of them because if things go south with Josh Jacobs and if Lloyd can stay healthy, which is a massive if.
63:57But if he can stay healthy, he is the kind of player in a really good offense that could have a huge fantasy season this year.
64:04So, yeah, a lot of worry about Jacobs. But I also think it's been baked into his ADP.
64:09And with the new report today that punishment still could be coming for him, we're going to see that ADP continue to fall.
64:16So you're going to be getting Jacobs in the fourth round.
64:19Maybe we'll see him fall even later. And given the player that he's been, which is an RB1 for fantasy in recent
64:25years, it's hard not to click that guy. Even if we know he's going to miss a little bit of time early
64:31in the season, when he's out there, he's still going to be good for fantasy.
64:36I don't think he's giving up this starting job this year.
64:39He might lose a little bit off the top of his projection if Lloyd can stay healthy.
64:44But in my mind, when he's out there, he's still going to be a good start for fantasy.
64:49Maybe not a league winning type. Maybe not, you know, top five, top ten like he's been before, but still fringe, you
64:55know, low end RB1, high end RB2, well within his range of outcomes, even with all the weirdness around him.
65:01Yeah, I think the problem for me is this.
65:03I wonder if you could be kind of catching a falling knife with Josh Jacobs there.
65:08Again, maybe I'm wrong about this, but he, unlike Derrick Henry, did experience declines across the board last year.
65:13Explosive run rate went from 7.6% to 6%. Yards per carry obviously fell.
65:17Yards after contact went from 3.5 to 3.1. So not a major decline, but just ticking down where it was.
65:23Again, I think with Henry, it wasn't quite like that.
65:26So just the environment in Green Bay, I think, could be worse as well.
65:30And he's just a guy who he wore down at the end of last year.
65:34So don't want to be totally, totally out on Jacobs, but he's a guy there I think is a little risky to click right now.
65:41And then, okay, real quick, we'll do just the rapid fire on the red light players.
65:45But Traven Henderson, you do have him as a yellow light player.
65:49I think that's the right designation. I wouldn't call him a total red light for me.
65:53But why Stevenson Green Light, Henderson Yellow Light? We did an episode before training camp started, I believe it was, where we
66:00talked about some of the rankings that could change quite a bit over the course of the next month or so before the season starts.
66:07And we talked about Henderson and we needed to hear good things.
66:10We needed to see good things from him. Now, the highlights are there.
66:14We're seeing him catch balls downfield. We're seeing him make some big plays.
66:18But everything we're hearing coming out of New England is that this is still Ramondre Stevenson's backfield, that Henderson is not showing
66:24well enough as a pass protector between the tackles.
66:26All the concerns that the coaching staff has put out there for him.
66:30He's not really answering the bell based on what we've heard so far.
66:34So that's led me to go, hey, Stevenson is going to start the season as the guy.
66:39It's made me less interested in Henderson and more worried that we're not going to see that transition happen where he's going
66:45to take over this backfield this year. Could it happen at any moment?
66:49Yes, because we saw it happen at one point last season when Stevenson got hurt.
66:53Henderson gets out there and acquits himself very, very well.
66:56Was a very solid fantasy start. Was putting up RB1 numbers during that stretch.
67:00But I think it might take an injury to Stevenson for this to happen now, Harmon.
67:04So a lot more worried about taking him to the point where we should be considering flipping these ADPs at this point.
67:10And maybe it's shocking that I'm saying that and I am late to the game on this one.
67:16But Stevenson was solid for fantasy last year. And right now, both these guys are going as sort of really low end RB2s, high end RB3s.
67:23And if we put Stevenson slightly ahead of Henderson, I think that's probably the right call.
67:28I still don't have it that way, but I've moved them very close to each other at this point.
67:33Yeah, they're very close for me as well. I do think you have to I still think you rank Henderson higher just on potential.
67:40Right. I mean, because if one guy is going to come in here and really run away with this thing, I think it will be Stevenson.
67:47But excuse me, it will be Henderson. I have him as my 65th overall player, 71st overall for Henderson, which is I'm
67:53a little bit behind ADP on Henderson and very much ahead about seven spots ahead on Travian.
67:58I see me on Ramondre Stevenson. The red light guys that you've got here, Travis Achan Jr., Bucky Irving, Jalen Warren and Chuba Hubbard.
68:05I'm going to throw it to you this way.
68:08Which one of these guys are you most worried kind of comes back to bite you and beats you as a red
68:14light player here that you're not going to draft very much?
68:17Absolutely, Chuba Hubbard. And we're talking about flipping backs in a backfield.
68:20I've moved Jonathan Brooks above him in my ranking.
68:23Oh, again, everything we're hearing coming out, everything we're seeing coming out of Carolina.
68:27And Brooks is healthy. The coaching staff's fired up about him.
68:30He adds that extra dimension to the offense. And it's a little bit like Marshawn Lloyd-esque.
68:35Like we need him to stay healthy. We need him to continue to prove that he can be that guy.
68:40But he's checking every single box right now, Harmon.
68:43And if you're looking for somebody to emerge from this backfield and actually be a difference maker, Brooks needed to not be doing what he's doing right now.
68:51Brooks needed to get to training camp, not look great, sluggish coming back from the injury, not regaining his form.
68:57That's not what's happening, according to beat writers, according to people around the team, according to people in the organization.
69:02He looks great. They're fired up about him and what he could potentially become.
69:06Will it be week one where he's leading this backfield?
69:09Not sure about that. But as this season goes along, are we going to see him take over kind of the way that Rico Dowdle did last year?
69:17And there was injury situations impacting that. But Brooks seems to be the player that they want to be leading this backfield.
69:23And it's really exciting. And I try not to get caught up in, like I mentioned earlier, the thing that fantasy managers
69:30and fantasy analysts do all the time, where they want to get that rising star.
69:34They want to be one of the first people that's so excited about a player.
69:38And I got him on all my teams. But man, right now, everything we're hearing out of Carolina certainly points to Brooks potentially being one of those guys.
69:46And there's two players right now that we're going very late in drafts and we're seeing their ADPs rise.
69:51And I'm trying to get as much as I can of him.
69:55One of them is Brooks. The other we're going to talk about in a little bit when we get to the sleeper section.
70:01Yeah, I mean, listen, I like Jonathan Brooks. I've got him 15.7 spots ahead of ADP, where I'm just kind of in line with Chuba.
70:08So yeah, I've got these guys pretty close in my rankings.
70:12And I've been talking about Brooks and what they want from him pretty much since the draft ended.
70:17It was a signal that they were excited about Brooks, the way they let Rico Dattle walk and did not replace him with anyone.
70:24I'm going to go the opposite way than the question you just asked me, like who could come back to bite you the most here?
70:31I don't know if you meant it in bite you the most in terms of me being wrong about them being a
70:37red light player, or if you meant bite you the most in terms of just being terrible for fantasy.
70:42But what if we go the opposite way? Bite you the most in terms of who could be really good.
70:48It's Travis H. And Jr., right? It's Travis H.
70:51And who in that Saints offense, I think could be really, really good.
70:54And I don't think it's just him and his talent.
70:57I think it's situations. And in Jacksonville, you got in a very good situation with Liam Cullen last year, and that offense
71:03took off, and he was really good for fantasy.
71:06We could see the same happen in New Orleans.
71:08And at the start of the offseason, I felt a lot stronger about that.
71:12When Alvin Kamara reworked his deal, that's when I started to get worried.
71:16And it's not because Kamara is coming for the job.
71:19Kamara is a fading player for sure. But if Kamara continues to fade, continues to take a little bit of a step
71:25back, and we do see Travis H. And Jr.
71:28be the guy, man, he could be really good in this offense.
71:31We know Kellen Moore just runs this really fast-paced attack.
71:34We know all the weapons they have there. The offensive line is really solid.
71:38It is a good environment. It's just, man, is Kamara going to move out of the way?
71:43We thought there was a chance he was going to retire.
71:46We thought they might move on from him. If he's out there and he's this legacy player for the Saints, I have
71:52a hard time believing that they're going to push him off the field often enough to allow someone else to be the guy.
71:59But I'm kind of hopeful. So he might be somebody that maybe should be more in the yellow light range.
72:04But if we're picking from this group, he's the one that I could see really show up this year and have a great fantasy season.
72:12Yeah, that was what I meant. Which of these guys could burn you for saying they're a red light?
72:17And I think he probably does make a ton of sense to me for all the reasons that you listed there.
72:23Honestly, I think Bucky Irving might be the guy for me that I've really changed my mind on the most.
72:29I mean, you're going to keep him in the coping corner.
72:32Dude, I don't know. Hearing out of Tampa Bay Buccaneers camp that basically Kenny Gainwell is involved as a pass catcher, but he's not really a rushing threat.
72:40And Bucky Irving is getting good reviews. He's healthier this year.
72:43That might be a top three offensive line in the league in Tampa Bay right now.
72:47I think the offensive line is generally really good.
72:50I mean, not just the offensive ecosystem is generally really good.
72:53So when I'm looking at these guys in this fifth round range where it's, again, I'll bring this up.
72:59The Quinchan Judkins. The Cam Scadaboo. He goes in the fourth round.
73:02I don't even know if these teams are going to be good.
73:05I think the Bucs are going to be pretty good.
73:08They have a good offensive line. Good ecosystem. I will take a shot on Bucky Irving there because I kind of think
73:14Kenny Gainwell's proficiency as a pass catcher has maybe gotten a touch overrated considering he was just in the Aaron Rodgers dump
73:21down a dump off offense last year. So to me, I think Bucky not going to be what he was as a
73:27rookie necessarily, but could be better than that in year two.
73:30I just don't see the ceiling. And that was part of the reason why we put him in the coping corner, because
73:36I just didn't see him getting back to being that top 12 guy.
73:40Yeah. Saying it probably won't be as good as he was when he was a rookie when he was a rookie.
73:46That's what he was. So I don't see that ceiling anymore.
73:49But again, like I spoke about earlier, if he falls, if you get him in the late fifth into the sixth round,
73:55that's a fine range to get him. Put him in your RB2 slot.
73:59He's not going to burn you from there, but he's just not going to have the ceiling that you necessarily want.
74:05If you want somebody with a little more upside in that role, I don't think he's the guy.
74:10I still don't believe in him and I'm still keeping him in the coping corner.
74:14But we can discuss that the next time we pull up the panic meter.
74:18I guess we'll discuss that in the regular season.
74:21And we'll see how that goes. Okay. We are going to take our last quick break.
74:26We come back. We've got sleepers for you on the other side of this break.
74:30We'll get into that right after this. All right.
74:32These are our sleeper running backs for the year.
74:35These are the guys going outside the top 100 in Yahoo ADP right now.
74:39Number one is Jonathan Brooks, who we already talked through.
74:42And I echo Boone's thoughts there. He's someone I am ahead of consensus on.
74:46The other ones here are Ja'Kory Krosky-Merritt, Jordan Mason, Jonah Coleman, Nicholas Singleton, Daman Claiborne.
74:50Shout out to Boone. Deep sicko. Day three running back stuff there.
74:53Jaden Blue and Marshawn Lloyd, who are kind of like the same player.
74:57So we'll save them to the end. Ja'Kory Krosky-Merritt.
75:00I know we talked about him a ton. And this commander's backfield, Boone, it's like I'm in an argument with myself about it constantly.
75:06I've been just flip-flopping, flip-flopping, flip-flopping, like whoever I talked to last.
75:10And they're like, let me make the case for Rashad White.
75:13I'm like, okay, that's a good case. I think Rashad White could be this year's Javante Williams.
75:18And then you and I talk about Ja'Kory Krosky-Merritt.
75:20I'm like, you know what? Younger, more explosive guy.
75:23Running under center stuff. He actually had some good metrics out of under center.
75:27Maybe I'll list JCM ahead. And now there's a third brain demon in the conversation here, which is what if none of
75:33this matters because the commanders are going to stink because Laramie Tunsil misses the entire season?
75:38So I think regardless, 119 overall ADP on JCM is fine.
75:41And it's good to target this ambiguous backfield. So that is maybe the TMI of what's going on in my brain with the commanders backfield.
75:48Can you bring some sense to this situation, Boone?
75:51I'm surprised it's still as much of a debate as it is even, Harmon.
75:55Like this is one where it's the opposite of Travion Henderson, where the coaching staff was like, we need to see X, Y, and Z from you.
76:02And we're not seeing it. With JCM, they made it very clear.
76:06Like you need to be able to step up in the passing game.
76:09And it sounds like that's what he's doing, right?
76:12We're getting really positive reports about that. We're getting tons of clips from camp where he's working in the passing game.
76:18Is it perfect? No. Is he still missing blocks sometimes?
76:21That is going to happen. Like, yeah, this is a process and we're not quite at the season yet.
76:26And is Rashad White going to be involved in this backfield?
76:29Absolutely. He's not going away. He's not going to sit on the bench while JCM gets the vast majority of the touches.
76:36But they put out their depth chart and Ja'Korak Roski Merritt was the lead back.
76:40He, again, going back to everything we've said all offseason, he's the most explosive guy.
76:44He ended the year so hot last season. And he's really the player that I think is going to get the first crack at this.
76:51Can he do it? Can he hold up over the course of a full season?
76:55Those things we're not totally sure about. And that's why he's going off the board at the end of the 10th round in his ADP.
77:03I would take him much higher than that. I would take him inside the top 100 picks.
77:07But you often don't have to. So I mentioned before there were two backs late that I really like grabbing that I
77:14think we're going to continue to see their ADPs rise over the next month.
77:18One was Jonathan Brooks. Another is Ja'Korak Roski Merritt.
77:20He was the second guy in that list for me.
77:23And I think we're looking at two guys that are young backs that are really exciting players and who are going to
77:29be leading their backfields this season, even though the veterans who are there with them will still be involved.
77:35We're trying to find the guy that can transcend, who can be that fantasy star and that meaningful difference maker in your lineup.
77:41These two guys profile as that and Brooks and JCM.
77:44So give me all the shares of Bill, especially when he's going this late.
77:48You can take Rashad White alongside him if you want to.
77:51You can grab them both and there's zero risk involved.
77:54But I often don't. I often just take JCM and we'll let the chips fall where they may.
77:59Yeah, I've got him 17 spots ahead of his overall ADP.
78:02So I'm pretty much right there with you on JCM.
78:05Also 17 spots ahead of ADP on Jordan Mason.
78:08I mean, Jordan Mason pretty much at 120 overall is kind of last call for you want to starting running back.
78:14It's probably Jordan Mason at 120. So obviously it makes sense as a sleeper here.
78:18I don't know if you want to make the case for Jordan Mason or you want to talk about one of these
78:24more exciting rookies or RB twos with the time we have here.
78:28I'll let you take the jump at it. I think Jordan Mason is probably worth talking about because it wouldn't shock me
78:34if he out does this by several, several rounds, like actually becomes a decent fantasy starter, a low end option, but still
78:40a guy that you could put in your lineup week after week.
78:43And it comes down to Aaron Jones just being an older back and a guy who's dealt with a ton of injuries,
78:50missed 11 games over the last three seasons. And it sounds like what we're hearing out of Minnesota is that Mason looks
78:56more like the lead back in that offense. Now it's never going to be a total workhorse role for him because if
79:02it's not Aaron Jones, then it goes to the other Viking on this list and DeMond Claiborne who Aaron Jones has been
79:09talking up as a really explosive player and somebody that I think would step into an Aaron Jones kind of role, more
79:15of a change of pace guy alongside Mason. But even if you go back to all the struggles that the Vikings had
79:21last year, and we've gone over it with the offensive line injuries and changing McCarthy and all of that, when Jones was
79:27out of the lineup, you know, for over a month early in the season, week three to week seven, Mason was the
79:34RB 16 and fantasy points per game. So there is a bit of a ceiling.
79:38It's not a league winning ceiling, but he has a little more to him than I think people are giving him credit for.
79:44And this ADP makes no sense at this point.
79:47I think he deserves a little bit better. So he's one.
79:50And then to look at, I said my piece in recent weeks on sort of these three deeper rookie backs and Jonah
79:56Coleman and Nicholas Singleton and Claiborne as these guys who are kind of third on the depth chart pushing for the number two role.
80:03But are they really third on the depth chart?
80:06Because if the starter goes down, I think there's a chance that those guys have really, really big roles in the backfield
80:12and especially with Coleman and Singleton, I think they might be the next man up in terms of being the lead back
80:18in the backfield while the other guy in RJ Harvey and Tajay Spears, they have kind of these pass catching roles and
80:24they would stay in similar types of roles while these other rookies vaulted up.
80:28So these are all players that I'm drafting as much as I can late in drafts, scooping up everywhere.
80:34And I feel like they're going to be players that I'm going to talk about in the waiver wire column early in
80:40the season because we're going to see them get some opportunities, play well.
80:44Maybe the veterans start to take a step back and we'll have these guys on all of our rosters by midseason.
80:50Yeah, Coleman, I think I like more than Singleton just because I like the player and the team better.
80:55But yeah, Singleton definitely deserves a mention here as well.
80:58I'll just quickly note on Jaden Blue and Marshawn Lloyd, who I would obviously co-sign as sleepers as well.
81:03I think Jaden Blue's got the better path to standalone value than Marshawn Lloyd does.
81:08Like if Josh Jacobs is out there and he's Josh Jacobs, I think he just runs the show.
81:13But Jaden Blue is not going to eat into a ton of Javante Williams workload.
81:17But I shared this stat today with Nate on the NFC East preview.
81:21The Cowboys last year on their running back runs were seventh in EPA, fourth in stuff rate.
81:26So the fourth best in stuff rate, sixth in success rate on their running back runs, but 19th in explosive run rate.
81:32And that's what Jaden Blue can bring is obviously the explosive runs.
81:35So I really like those two guys as late round sleepers.
81:38Boone, hell of a show, brother. We previewed the running back position.
81:42We disagreed in some spots. We found common ground.
81:44And you know, that's the type of guys we are.
81:47You know, unite, common ground, middle, you know, middle ground.
81:50Find consensus here. Reach across the aisle. We love to see it.
81:53You know me, when it comes to running backs, let's do another half hour.
81:57I could keep going. We could go deeper here, Harmon.
82:00These deep like dynasty stashes. That's how you uncover the George Helanis that we get excited about in the offseason.
82:06That's how you uncover the Phil Maffas, right? Who could have a role in Dallas.
82:10Like there's a lot of deep backs that we'll talk about on future episodes.
82:14And people can go check out our rankings for where we have those guys as, you know, deep stashes, late round picks, or maybe even waiver wire options.
82:22Well, stay tuned for the super mega premium feed where Boone does 90 minutes on the likes of Keaton Mitchell, which there
82:28actually would be people that would pay for the premium feed on Keaton Mitchell.
82:32You know, maybe we can get him on Emmett Johnson.
82:35So stay tuned for that one. Ollie Gordon in Miami.
82:38Maybe a sneaky number two back in Miami this year.
82:41Anyway, moving on. You keep saying this. There are definitely people that would tune in for that show.
82:46So don't sign yourself up for more work, pal.
82:49But that is going to do it for us today on this show.
82:52And reminder, folks, it is Yahoo Fantasy football's 29th year.
82:55And to celebrate, we are kicking off 29 days of fantasy.
82:58Today, Yahoo Fantasy announced the addition of tight end premium.
83:01You can now set custom tight end point values for your league with the Yahoo Fantasy commissioner tools and boost their values.
83:07Great time for that, by the way, because tomorrow we are going to wrap up positional preview week with the tight end position with Nate Tice.
83:15Yes, that's right. That pod is going to be live at 4 p.m.
83:18Eastern right here on YouTube. Nobody loves these hand in the dirt.
83:22True why tight ends more than Nate Tice. So be here with us tomorrow at 4 p.m.
83:27Eastern.
